In reading this article, it was difficult to follow through the example given as a starting point in the derivation of the theoretical equation which relates ball size to feed size. A discussion with F. C. Bond led to the following clarification: Bond postulates that "the breaking force exerted by a ball varies . . . as the cube of its diameter . . ." and that the force in pounds per square inch required to break a particle varies . . . as its diameter squared."

An exploring-drift, on the bottom level of the Curry mine, at Norway, Mich., on the Menominee range, cut a stream of water, which increased considerably the expense of pumping. The hope that the supply would drain off was not realized. It was decided to build a dam in the exploring-drift, as it was estimated that the cost would be recovered by the saving in fuel in less than two months.

The following members were appointed on the Committee Advisory to the U. S. Bureau of Standards: Arthur S. Dwight (Lead). John Fairfield Thompson (Nickel). The reports of the Committee in charge of the Arizona Meeting and the Committee on Transportation to the Arizona Meeting were accepted with the thanks of the Board. The By-Laws of the Nevada Section of the Institute were approved. The subscription price of the Bulletin to non-members of the Institute was increased to $12, per year beginning with January, 1917. This increase does not affect the reduced price of $5 on extra copies of the Bulletin which are sold to members, libraries and sister societies.

This contribution illustrates the application of the theory of period doubling to the description of the formation of microcracks in rocks. The fundamental mathematics is described and a method of prediction is proposed. The invariance (universal constants) of a generic microfracturing (damage) process is described. Finally, the method is presented as a deterministic method of predicting the failure of an engineering material while keeping track of the amount of damage that has occured at any point.

ACCORDING to the data of Maier and Ralston1 zinc vapor and carbon monoxide under the conditions in which they are present in a zinc condenser should, from a thermodynamic point of view, react to form zinc oxide and carbon, Zn (gas) + CO = ZnO (solid) + C. Calculations based on these results show that the gas mixture which is reducing to zinc oxide at the tempera-ture of the retort is oxidizing to zinc at the tempera-ture of the condenser. The present article calls attention to the activities of a committee on coal research of the sister society of Economic Geologists. The field of coal geology crosses the boundary between the two societies and joint meetings are as applicable here as in the metallic and other nonfuel fields of mining and natural resources recovery. The six fields of coal geology are briefly described and some of the ways in which they touch on coal mining, preparation, and recovery briefly indicated.

MINING research in the U. S. today is indeed complex, whether it involves the Government, a small private concern, or a large one. And it promises to become more so, despite great advances already made in developing equipment and technology. The U. S.
