DISCUSSION John G. Barry (Mexico)—"The Nerinea limestone," writes W. H. Triplett, p. 584, "is ... medium-bedded (0.5 to 1.0 m)...." This is the Zuloaga formation. It has always been described as thick-bedded (1.0 to 3.0 m). "Whether the marls and shales were less amenable to replacement," he goes on to say, ". . . is a matter of opinion." In general, it is probable that the thinner-bedded formations were less competent than the nearby thicker-bedded, so that the latter produced pre-mineral breccias when all were subjected to flexing stresses. With reference to Mr. Triplett's analysis, p. 584, under Lower Cretaceous, in the Taraises and Cupido formations some few horizons should be considered as possibly containing hidden orebodies. In the Potrero camp, shown on the general map in the northwestern part of Fig. 4, p. 587, several mineralized beds are known; they are found throughout the whole thickness of the Cuesta del Cura formation. With regard to intrusive rocks, p. 585, the general map, Fig. 4, shows that the Potrero and Noche Buena camps are near a third, monzonitic intrusive. It seems doubtful that the Aranzazu was any hotter than the Providencia camp. However, the former does contain large deposits of exogenetic silicates, which in large part occur within the Zuloaga limestone, as shown by Bergeats in a stereogram. At the Aranzazti camp the La Caja formation was only slightly changed, whereas it was altered highly at the Providencia, possibly en-dogenetically. That the temperatures at the Providencia camp were relatively high at one time is also shown by the tourmaline veinlets and lenses in the monzonite and by the garnets on Temeroso peak; high temperature mineralization has possibly been eroded. Maps and sections show that the Concepcion del Oro —Temeroso stock occupies the original locus of some 40 kms of sedimentary rocks. The remains of large roof pendants at Carmen and Animas indicate that stoping was active. Whether all the sedimentaries were stoped and assimilated presents a lively problem, a correlative of which would be an estimate of the original constitution of the invading instrusive rock. As to extrusive rocks, see p. 585, there is also a large thick area of the extrusives left near Noche Buena in the "La Caja" intramontane valley of the La Caja range. This place gave its name to the range. The volcanics are also said to occur in considerable amount in the Mazapil valley.'' Turning now to the remarks under Regional Structure, p. 586, as partly indicated on the general map, Fig. 4, the Mazapil Mountains of the Mazapil region are a continuous, U-shaped range including a northern leg of some 24 km, a southern leg of similar length, and a uniting base which lies to the East and which measures some 10 km in a S 20 E direction. Thus the U-shaped mountains are continuous through a length of 58 km and also contain one continuous anticline, the adjacent valleys being synclinal. The northern leg of the U is called the La Caja range, the base is called the Concepcion del Oro range, and the southern leg the Santa Rosa range. The ranges in northeastern Zacatecas and southern Coahuila contain anticlines and the valleys contain synclines, which where thin are necessarily highly compressed isoclines with very steep dips. Many of the anticlines also have isoclinal components which are overturned, original mushroom tops being indicated. The anticline in the base of the U of the Mazapil Region, Concepcion del Oro range, is a recumbent anticline, over to the ENE, with a necessarily subjacent recumbent syncline.

SINGLE slip and a single parallel array of edge dislocations have been obtained in silicon single crystals by homogeneously bending them in a four-point dead-loading device at 1000°C around the [211] axis with [253.] as the tensile axis which encloses an angle of 40° with the glide plane. Other orientations or lower temperatures proved unsuitable. The homogeneity of the bending was checked by the method shown in Fig. 1. The chemically polished specimen was exposed to parallel light from a microscope-stage lamp. The sharpness of the focus of the reflected light is an approximate measure of the circularity of the sample. This method permitted the determination of the actual radius of bent specimens within 10 pct accuracy. The etching solution developed to show up dislocations consisted of the following volume parts: 2 HF, 1 HNO,, 2 CH,COOH, 1 a solution of 5 wt pct of CuNO, in water (Rosi'). The acetic-acid content was adjusted to produce fine well-defined etch-pits in about 2 min at room temperature. The effectiveness of the etch did not depend on the crystal-lographic orientation of the face etched. The number of etch pits produced after a given deformation was checked in the usual way against the Cahn formula' and showed good agreement. As it is to be expected from the orientation of the primary system there are slip steps on the top and bottom faces but not on the side faces (perpendicular to the bending axis), whereas etch pits appear on the side faces but not on the top and bottom faces. This is different only for occasional dislocations of a secondary glide system. All the micrographs included have been taken in places where the most of secondary glide could be seen. From this it is evident that in the homegeneously deformed region the number of secondary dislocations was less than 1 in 1000 of the primary type. Dislocation Distribution—A series of tests with varying amounts of deformation is shown in Figs. 2(a-c). An observation that can readily be made from these pictures is that the linear density of dislocations within slip lines is relatively constant and independent of the amount of deformation. "Slip line" in this context is understood to mean a line that is a straight connection of individual etch pits. The heavily pitted bands which can be seen in each of these three pictures may be resolved fairly definitely, at higher magnifications, into many "slip lines" the distance between them being of the order of 0.5p The distance between dislocations in slip lines is of the order of 2p and it is also fairly constant in going from the neutral zone outward. The higher over-all dislocation density in the outer regions of any sample and the higher total number in a more heavily deformed sample, are effected by a larger number of "slip lines." The relative constancy of the dislocation distance within an individual slip line is surprising. The absence of pile-ups" may imply, if there is no rear- rangement on unloading," that there are no substantial obstacles to slip in this case. Mineral pigments give color, opacity, or body to paint, stucco, plaster, mortar, cement, linoleum, rubber, and similar materials. They must be finely divided, substantially insoluble, and generally inert for such uses. Inorganic pigments may be grouped somewhat arbitrarily as follows: A. Natural mineral pigments dug from the earth. 1. Those consisting mostly of iron oxides, such as hematite and limonite. 2. Those containing large amounts of clay or noncoloring matter, such as ocher, sienna, umber, and colored shales. 3. Those whose color is not due to iron oxide, such as Vandyke brown (including sap brown, an alkali extract of Vandyke brown), graphite, and terre verte. B. Synthetic pigments. 1. Those containing iron oxide as the essential coloring matter, such as "pure" reds, yellows, and blacks, and Venetian reds. 2. Those not containing iron oxide, but rather such compounds as lithopone, zinc white, titanium white, ultramarine, Prussian blue, and the like. Only groups A and B-1 are discussed here. All the pigments in those two categories, except Vandyke brown, sap brown, and some of the carbonaceous slates, contain, as their essential color constituents, one or more compounds of iron; namely, an oxide-limonite (2Fe2O3.H2O to Fe2O3.4H20), hematite (Fe2O3), or magnetite (Fe2O3.FeO). Man's first permanent coloring materials were earth pigments-the ochers, iron oxides, and various iron-stained clays. The caves occupied by prehistoric man and the arts of the ancient Chaldean, Egyptian, and Cretan civilizations bear mute witness to this and also testify to the beauty and permanence of earth colors. As the Roman era developed, earth pigments were pushed from their pre-eminent position by white lead and red lead and in the Middle Ages by zinc oxide. Today, of course, the number of acceptable pigments is very large and on a value basis the group of natural and synthetic earth pigments stands forth with $16,000,000 per year; it is surpassed by titanium, lead and zinc pigments. Of this sum,21 natural pigments supplied 31 pct of the tonnage and 16 pct of the value of the total finished pigment in 1957, the remainder representing the tonnage and value of sales of the synthetic iron oxide colors. The average value of finished natural pigments in 1958 was $80.62 per ton. The average value of manufactured pigments in the same year was $202 per ton. Of the 60,000 tons of manufactured colored pigments sold in 1958, the reds comprised 76 pct of the market and the yellows 20 pct. The reds furnished 68 pct of the value and the yellows 24 pct. Of the finished iron oxide pigments (natural and manufactured) sold in 1958, the reds dominated the market with 66 pct of the quantity and 63 pct of the value; yellows supplied 17 pct of the quantity and 20 pct of the value, and browns furnished 11 pct of the quantity and 10 pct of the value. The average value of the reds was approximately $152, and the average value of the yellows $190 per ton. The highest valued pigment in 1958, with almost 12 pct of the total tonnage and 21 pct of the value of the iron oxide pigment market, was manufactured red from calcined copperas valued at $286 per ton.

IT is found when floating oxidized lead ores by sulphidization, that the presence of calcium salts in the water, is usually detrimental and lowers the recovery. This effect is particularly marked in dry countries such as North Africa, where the waters often carry large amounts of calcium sulphate and where the ore may even contain gypsum. The effect of calcium salts is readily visible. Whereas in their absence cerussite is quickly stained brown and then black by sodium sulphide, in their presence the mineral remains very light in color. A similar effect is produced when barium sulphide is used as a sulphidizing agent instead of sodium sulphide. Magnesium salts have little or no effect and even tend to reduce the detrimental effect of calcium salts. A study of this phenomenon indicates that it is due to the precipitation of calcium or barium carbonate in contact with the mineral simultaneously with the formation of lead sulphide. The chemical reactions can be interpreted as: PbCO3 + Na2S = PbS + Na2CO3 CaSO4 + Na2CO3 = CaCO3 + Na2 SO4 They might also be written: PbCO3 + S = + Ca++ = PbS + CaCO3 The precipitation of calcium carbonate can be followed by the lowering of the pH with which it is accompanied. Magnesium carbonate is more soluble than calcium carbonate and usually does not precipitate under the conditions prevailing. It is interesting to note that calcium salts have no effect on anglesite (lead sulphate) because calcium sulphate is soluble, but barium salts hinder the sulphidization of anglesite because of the precipitation of barium sulphate. Remedies When calcium sulphate is present in large amounts, the softening of the water with soda ash is usually too expensive to be considered, but the precipitation of the objectionable calcium carbonate can be prevented in two different ways. One is the use of sodium hydrosulphide instead of sodium sulphide. This salt gives a lower pH than sodium sulphide and does not bring about the immediate precipitation of the calcium which remains in solution as calcium bicarbonate. The other procedure is to add ammonium salts such as the sulphate or chloride which have the property of increasing markedly the solubility of calcium carbonate. Ammonium salts have other effects such as cutting down conditioning time and accelerating flotation. They should be added to the flotation cells rather than to the ball mills. Table I. They show that the strongly detrimental effects of calcium sulphate can be offset by the two procedures outlined above. Sodium hydrosulphide is now used regularly on a mill scale on certain ores. Tests are being carried out with ammonium salts. It should be noted that malachite is subject to influences similar to cerussite. One final word of caution—when the ore is rich in primary slime, which is flocculated by the calcium salts, it may be indispensable to remove these by washing or precipitation with sodium carbonate instead of keeping them in solution by the above methods. A Discussion of the paper by H. O. Hofman and M. G. Magnuson, read at the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904. (British Columbia Meeting, July, 1905.) T. KIRKE ROSE, London, Eng. (communication to the Secretary*`) :-The authors have shown that, under certain conditions, the rate of dissolution of gold by chlorine and bromine is re¬duced by the addition of 10 per cent. of silver to the gold, and that the action is almost stopped when the silver amounts to 30 or 40 per cent. of the alloy. Even if full recognition is given to the practical way in which the work was done, how¬ever, it is to be regretted that Prof. Hofman and Mr. Magnuson did not determine the temperature at which the experiments were carried out. From the details given it may be inferred that the temperature was raised by chemical action by about 20° C. when 21 g. of sulphuric acid were added, and that the mixture was then slowly cooled down during the experiment. When bromine or very weak chlorine solutions were used, there could not have been any perceptible heating action. As the action of both chlorine and bromine is aided by heat, it follows that the stronger solutions of chlorine were given an unfair advantage over the weaker solutions and over bromine. If the temperature had been the same in each case, I do not think that the conclusions given oil p. 432 of the Bi-Monthly Bulletin, March, 1905, 1 would have been found to be justified. (This is speaking generally. In barrel-treatment the conditions are similar to those in the experiments.) The superior speed of bromine as compared with chlorine at equivalent strengths is not yet disproved, and the differences noted between strong and weak solutions of chlorine may have been largely a function of the temperature. ALTHOUGH zone melting has found favor in recent years because of its convenience and its faster rate of production of single crystals, the older technique of strain annealing still has a number of advantages. It has been reported1 that the lattice of a crystal prepared in this manner has fewer defects than one grown from the melt and, of course, the control of the external geometry is easier. Also, the diameter of the crystal which can be grown by zone melting has a theoretical limit determined by the surface tension, thermal conductivity, and specific gravity of the material, while the size of that which can be grown in the solid state is limited only by practical considerations. In a program for the study of the structure-sensitive properties of niobium and its alloys it was desirable, for ease of handling, to have available single crystals of large diameter. This requirement dictated the choice of the strain-anneal technique. Induction heating was chosen in the present work in preference to other methods because of its deep penetration of large-diameter sections. A five-turn coil, powered by a motor generator operating at 10,000 cps, is contained in a vacuum chamber. The work is lowered through the coil for both the recrystallization and the crystal-growth steps. Starting with electron-beam melted material, the bars are cold-swaged, recrystallized, strained in a tensile machine, and then subjected to the growth step. Single crystals have been grown under the following conditions: Reduction in area during swaging— 79 to 99 pct, recrystallization temperature—1500o to 1667°C at the rate of 1.25 in. per hr, strain—1.0 to 2.5 pct, growth temperature—1600o to 2400°C at rates from 0.15 to 1.25 in. per hr. Starting grain sizes achieved after the recrystallization step varied from 0.6 to 1.55 mm. The starting grain size was found to be critical; if it is too fine and has any residual cold work, as shown by the presence of a fiberlike texture, a single crystal cannot be grown. Using this technique niobium single crystals have been grown from 0.250 in. diameter and 12 in. long to 1.00 in. diameter and 5 in. long as shown in Fig. 1. The 1-in. crystal is the largest to be reported for a refractory metal as compared to 0.500 in. for molybdenum grown by zone melting.2 As with zone melting, control of orientation is possible by the use of special procedures. Other investigators, see for example Williamson and Smallman,3 have reported that orientation control may be achieved by a bending technique. In the present work the strained rod is partially lowered through the coil to start the growth of the crystal. Then it is removed and bent at a point ahead of the interface between the single and polycrystalline portions. Finally, it is returned to the chamber and growth is continued "around the corner". The amount of bending which can be imparted to the rod is limited by coil geometry which up to now has been 10 deg. However, by repeating the bending and growing operations it should be possible to attain any desired orientation. The perfection of these single-crystal specimens as a function of process variables is being measured by X-ray and metallographic techniques and the results will be reported in a forthcoming paper. In the present work the strained rod is partially lowered through the coil to start the growth of the crystal. Then it is removed and bent at a point ahead of the interface between the single and polycrystalline portions. Finally, it is returned to the chamber and growth is continued "around the corner". The amount of bending which can be imparted to the rod is limited by coil geometry which up to now has been 10 deg. However, by repeating the bending and growing operations it should be possible to attain any desired orientation. The perfection of these single-crystal specimens as a function of process variables is being measured by X-ray and metallographic techniques and the results will be reported in a forthcoming paper. The purpose of this note is to call attention to a source of difficulty which can be responsible for inaccurate estimates of wetting liquid pressure gradients in mixture flow experiments of the Hassler1 type. It has been our experience occasionally to observe what were indicated to be negative pressure gradients, and these were regarded as anomalous in the sense that physically they seemed to contradict the requirement that the flux be in the direction of the potential field. At first it was thought that our scheme of assembling barriers and core sample led to such asymmetry in the distribution of isobars that the manometric leads at each end of the core were responding to internal pressures (within the core sample) which could be either positive or negative with respect to each other, and which in fact might tend to reflect on different effective core lengths in an unpredictable fashion as the wetting liquid saturation was changed. However, no compelling evidence of this possibility has been established. In addition, we were cognizant of the requirements to be satisfied in selecting manometric instrumentation to minimize the delay in response of the manometer to the differential pressures being measured, and were thus assured that our observations of anomalous pressure gradients could not be explained by faulty instrumentation. What we suggest is that if a leak sink occurs in the fluid lines connecting the core to either side of the differential manometer, errors exceeding 100 per cent may result in the estimation of wetting liquid pressure gradient, even though the leak is of such small magnitude that its existence would tend to be obscured by evaporation effects. This is because in a system with leaks at the specified places, the manometer rec- ords at steady state the pressure drop across the manometer barrier elements in addition to the pressure drop across the core sample. This possibility will be illustrated below analytically and by numerical example for the special case where the leak occurs on the high presure side of the core, since we are especially desirous to explain the significance of our observations of the so-called negative pressure gradients. It will be indicated, however, that leak sinks on the low pressure side of the core can account for observations of anomalously high values of pressure gradient, and that multiple leaks on both sides of the core can provide for some compensation so that the errors in pressure estimation are reduced. However, the major point to be emphasized is the fact that the impractical-ity of detecting the small leak sinks which give rise to the difficulties makes it a complicated task for the experimenter in a particular case to know with certainty that his estimation of pressure gradient lies within the limits of error which can be tolerated. Fig. 1 shows the electrical analog of the flow system we have employed in our studies. The inflow and outflow barriers. A NATIVE son of Salt Lake City. David Douglas Moffat has contributed greatly to both the mineral industries and civic progress in the State of Utah. He was born in 1880 and his whole life bas been intimately associated with mining and milling. His father, one of Utah's pioneer mining men, was superintendent of a mill at Park City. When Moffat was only 18 years of age he went to Philipsburg Mont., where he spent several years as a machinist, and later as master mechanic for the Granite Bi-Metallic Mining Co. He returned to Park City in 1903 as master mechanic and night mill foreman for the Ontario Silver Mining Co. After a few years of varied experience he became, in 1910. general foreman of the Boston Consolidated Will at Garfield, Utah.

DULUTH ENGINEERS' CLUB The engineers of Duluth, Minn., have taken the first steps to form a Duluth Engineers' Club by a meeting on May 20, at the Kitchi Gammi Club. At present, Duluth has no club embracing all engineers, although the environment is splendid for the growth of an engineers' organization. Within reasonable 'distance of Duluth are over 100 members of the four large national engineering societies, a number of members of the lesser engineering societies, and many non-member engineers. Until the Duluth Association of Civil Engineers was formed, four years' ago, these engineers had no common ground of meeting, and a force representing education, experience, and high ideals lay dormant. About 70 engineers were present at the organization meeting, and favorable responses were received from others who could not be present. F. E. House, President of the Duluth & Iron Range Railroad, outlined the objects of the meeting, calling attention to the importance of the engineer in all lines of activity in the war and the splendid qualities of American engineers in France. W. H. Woodbury outlined the plan, stating the three objects of the club as professional, social, and civic. Four plans of membership have been considered: First, an organization for all professional engineers, junior engineers, and associates, with .different status for each; second, an organization of members of the four big national societies; third, an organization of members and a limited number of associates; fourth, professional engineers, only, all on equal standing.

During 1975, the Reclasource Corp. constructed and started up a plant for the recovery of mill scale, coke breeze, blast furnace dust; blast furnace sludge; and TOC dust, at the site of Crucible Steel, Inc., Midland, Pa. The Reclaform Process was employed as the criteria for plant design. This process takes the solid wastes (as listed above) which are commonly found in integrated steel mills, sizes them, forms them through the use of a carbonaceous binder briquetting system, and fixes the binder through a final heat treating step. Blast furnace tests have been performed on 15,000 tons of Reclaform briquets. This paper gives a brief history of the program, and describes the process and the raw materials involved. The blast furnace campaign and its major conclusions are discussed.

T'HE Columbia Section of the A. 1. M. E. took charge of the Western Mining Convention on Oct. 3, and the meeting was held under their auspices. W. L. Zeigler, chairman of the Section, called the session to order. The first paper on the program, "Lead Refining Practice at Bunker Hill Smelter," was presented in per-son by the author, A. F. Beasley, superintendent of the smelter. He pointed out the differences in the refining practice at Bunker Hill from other American refineries. The Bunker Hill plant was the first to adopt the liquation process for silver skims as developed in Australia. Details were given of operating practice with results. F. F. Colcord questioned the author in regard to the kind of metal best suited for kettles, which was said to be cast iron.

Raphael PUmpelly, who became a member of the Institute in 1871, the year of its organization, and retained his membership for a long period, died at his home in Newport, R. I., Aug. 10, 1923. He is survived by a son, Raphael, Jr., and by two daughters, one of whom is the wife of Prof. Henry L. Smyth, of Harvard. Doctor Pumpelly was born in Oswego, N. Y., in 1835. He studied sciences and mining engineering in Paris and at Freiberg, later taking his Doctor's degree at Princeton. He was Professor of Mining at Harvard from 1866 to 1873. Doctor Pumpelly made geological explorations in many lands. In 1861-63, he conducted a scientific exploration for the Japanese government, and for two years thereafter carried on researches in central, western, and northern China and Mongolia. In 1864-65, he undertook a voyage of exploration across the Gobi desert, returning to Europe through Siberia. He was State Geologist of Michigan from 1869 to 1871; Director of the Missouri Geological Survey from 1871 to 1873; and Chief of Division, U. S. Geological Survey, directing the mineral industries division of the tenth census. He organized and directed the Northern Transcontinental Survey, 1881-84; directed the explorations inaugurating the iron ore industry of most of the ranges of Michigan and Western Ontario, 1897-1901; initiated and directed a physical-geographical and archeo-logical exploration of Central Asia under the auspices of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, 19034.2.

The problem of the measurement of in situ stresses in rock masses has, in recent years, become one of the prime concerns of investigators and researchers in the field of rock mechanics. Numerous instruments have been developed for that purpose and various techniques have been used to determine the absolute values of these stresses at a point.l The "stress-relief" technique has gained the widest acceptance. In its usual application it relies on one of the two following principles: (1) Measurements of the changes in a "solid inclusion" in a borehole,2 or (2) Measurements of the diametral deformation of a borehole with a free boundary." The theoretical development, in the case of the latter, is based upon an evaluation of the deformation of a circular hole in an infinite plate under the action of a uniaxial stress field. Expressions for the deformations may be obtained by using either the plain strain or the generalized plane stress theoretical approach of the classical theory of Elasticity, which assumes that the material is linearly elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The solution for the case of a biaxial stress field is obtained by the Principal of Superposition. The circular hole becomes elliptical after deformation takes place under the action of a uniaxial or biaxial stress field applied to the plate. AN analysis of this subject demands a study of the theory and practice of the present system, conclusions as to its merits, and recommendations for remedying its defects if any be found. Theory of the Present Law The theory of the present law with reference to lode locations contemplates the existence upon the surface of mineral-bearing veins which have clearly marked boundaries, and which can be so readily traced that a locator may immediately mark the boundaries of his 600 by 1,500 ft. claim in such a way that the vein will pass through both of its end-lines. It also supposes that, having discovered such a mineral-bearing vein, the locator will at once post a notice upon such discovery, mark the boundaries of his location in such a manner that they can be readily traced, and from that time forward have absolute title to the ground embraced within such boundaries, as against every person except the United States. For initiating title to placer ground, the law presupposes the discovery of a valuable mineral deposit; but not necessarily in place, as in the case of lode claims; and the location must be made to conform "as nearly as may be" to the legal subdivisions of the United States public land survey. When the placer law was extended to include the acquisition of title to oil lands, no exception was made as to the necessity for the discovery of valuable mineral in advance of location!
