Reported are singular results of a completed combustion research program designed to reliably determine the ignition, burnout, and pollution characteristics of various ranks of pulverized coal (bituminous and lignite), chars, and water-slurries of the raw bituminous coals. Well controlled simulated boiler environments were diagnosed to do so. The standardized, systematic, and comprehensive investigation established relationships between physicochemical fuel properties (coal rank, volatile matter, and reactivity) and thermochemical combustion behavior (ignition and burnout times, and NOX pollution potential) for 31 different fuels.

Discussion of the paper of ALLAN J. CLARK presented at the San Francisco meeting, September 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 103, July, 1905, pp. 1381 to 1398. G. H. CLEVENGER, Palo Alto, Cal.-Since the precipitation of extremely dilute solutions as regards cyanide presents one of the greatest problems of zinc-dust precipitation, I should like to ask Mr. Clark the minimum concentration in cyanide of the solution from which it is possible to precipitate satisfactorily the gold with zinc dust in Homestake practice. A. J. CLARK.-For a day's work about 0.015 per cent. That is precipitating a very low-grade solution, very low in alkalinity. It requires probably 0.2 lb. of zinc dust to the ton. JOHN A. FULTON, Melones, Cal.-At the Melones mine, we have been working very low-grade rock for a number of years, the process being amalgamation and concentration up to the last year. The value of the ore increased so that we had to supplement the concentration with a sand and slime plant. Classification was a problem, since to install classifiers would mean tearing the mill all to pieces. We are therefore making use of a Wilfley table for this purpose. The committee appointed .by W. R. Ingalls, president of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, to nominate candidates for the' annual gold medal of the Society consisted of E. G. Spilsbury, J. E. Johnson, Jr., and Bradley Stoughton. This committee recommended Mr. Schneider of the Creuzot Works in France for achievements in ferrous metallurgy, which recommendation was approved by the Society. From the report of the committee, the following facts relative to Mr. Schneider's career are taken: Born in 1868, Charles Eugene Schneider undertook the management of the Schneider establishment in 1898, after the death of his father, Henri Schneider. Under his enlightened management, the Schneider establishments have been considerably extended, their activity being not only directed to increasing production, but also to spreading more and more their scope for action in all branches of industry-in metallurgy, mechanical and electrical construction, shipbuilding, artillery and ammunition, and in public works. During the 10 years preceding the war, the number of employees in these establishments, and without counting those of the more numerous subsidiaries, increased approximately 50 per cent. IKE'S amiable expression and apparent sincerity impressed AIME members as did the theme of his talk. Cautioning against the gradually increasing power of the federal government, he said: . . . "freedom as we know it is in no greater danger from without than it is from our own lack of understanding of this creeping paralysis from within." Next February, it will be three years since he uttered these words at Annual Meeting welcoming ceremonies, but the theme was oft repeated in his winning campaign. This brush with the exalted, brief though it was, makes Washington look friendlier to many AIME members than it has for years.

AS part of a continuing program of liquid metals research, the densities of liquid lead, tin, zinc, cadmium, and indium have been measured by a pycnometric method. The pycnometers are made of high-density graphite to the design illustrated in Fig. l(a). In pursuing this research program, emphasis has been placed on detailed experimental care. As a result, claims are made for densities accurate to within ± 0.05 pct over temperature ranges varying from about 100± to 200°C above the melting point. Drilling in Missouri in 1944 was nearly treble the rate of 1943 because of continued development of the Tarkio pool in Atchison County and the preparation of a pool in Jackson County for a water-injection project. The pipe line from the Prairie Point gas pool in Platte County was in operation throughout the year of 1944, but several of the shallow oil pools in Cass and Jackson Counties were off production during much of 1944 because of a shortage of help. Table I gives a summary of activities by counties. The total footage drilled was 41,475 .ft., of which 21,187 ft. was by rotary tools and 20,268 ft. by cable tools.

Nippissing Mines Co., Ltd., a Ventures subsidiary, has bought into the, Vermont Copper Co. Inc. which operates a copper mine in Vermont producing 700 tons daily. The Vermont Mining Co. has been in operation since 1943 under the present management. When present owners wanted to convert their holdings to cash, the Ventures people saw possibilities in the area which, has been little explored but has a sizable production record. Final approval of the Anaconda-Harvey project for a 72,000 ton aluminum reduction plant at Kalispell, Mont., has been announced by Defense Production Administration. After considerable discussion in the past few weeks regarding Anaconda's entrance into the aluminum field, the approval stated "clearly the best arrangement."

For years, the coal industry has been confronted with face ventilation problems, ignitions, dust, and their effect on productivity. To improve face ventilation, minimize face ignitions, and control dust in the face areas, studies have been conducted over the past 30 odd years by coal companies, federal government research programs and others. These studies included brattice curtains, water spray nozzles, water pressures, highly efficient water filtration systems, auxiliary fans, differ fans, various dust collection systems and the recently developed "Spray Fan" ventilation system. This system consists of spray banks strategically placed on continuous miners to ventilate immediate face area.

PUTNAM (author's reply to discussion?).-The writers are inclined to question whether it has been experimentally established that steels will endure an indefinite number of repetitions of low range of stress. It is difficult to see how such a conclusion can be reached except by extrapolation from test data,. and such extrapolation always gives results of questionable value. Efforts were made to determine the amount of increase in the drying rate which could be obtained through acoustic treatment of ultra fine coal under various conditions, and to test the feasibility of using a rotary kiln and multitiered vibrating screens as a means for continuous drying of coal fines. Introduction of acoustic energy during the rotary kiln experiments increased the drying rates from 10-40%, depending upon the experimental condition. The use of a drying assembly consisting of multitiered vibrating screens produced better results than the rotary kiln and has definite possibilities of providing an effective means of drying coal fines in relatively large quantities.

AIME is closing the books on its first 100 years. In the next year the meetings and many papers will doubtless be filled with statistics on the growth of AIME, and, incidentally, on the mining industry. Let's try to keep our cool and avoid breaking our arms patting ourselves on the back. AIME, nationally and locally, runs on the drive and dynamism of a rather small number of its members. If you look at the annual SME Blue Book of national officers and committee members, you will be struck by the repetition of the same names throughout. Trend for a few men to shoulder the burdens and responsibilities can be seen on the local level, too.

sage' appears to have been the first (1933) to design a rolling ball viscosimeter for the express purpose of measuring the viscosity of oils with natural gas in solution, i.e., under reservoir conditions. In 1940 Hocott and Buckley' further refined the rolling ball instrument in both design and method of operation, and their instrument, known as the Humble type, was the forerunner of present day viscosimeters used in petroleum production and research laboratories. Probably the outstanding feature of the oil industry in the Argentine, during the past year, was the increase in production from the Comodoro Rivadavia field. This increase was accounted for by the discovery of a deeper producing horizon in the old coastal field (zone A). The oil, derived from the deeper sands, served not only to balance the natural decline of the upper sands and increase the yield from the area, but also provided a product of comparatively superior quality.
