COLORADO SCHOOL OF MINES On February 21, 1918, the students of the Colorado School of Mines who are members or have applied for membership in the Institute re-organized the "Scientific Society of The Colorado School of Mines,? which has for its .purpose the study and discussion of mining problems. Its meetings will be held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, in Guggenheim Hall. Following are the officers R. W. GIBSON, President, W. A. CONLEY, Vice-president, F. L. SERVISS, Sec'y.-Treas. At present there are 62 members, seven of whom are Faculty members. F. L. SERVISS, Secretary.

W. R. Ingalls made an oral address on the subject of the 27th Engineers, and it was resolved that notice of the needs of the Association of the 27th Engineers be communicated to the members through the Bulletin. Robert W. Hunt was appointed representative of the Institute on the Commission of Award of the Washington Medal of the Western Society of Engineers. The budget for the year 1918 was adopted. The report of the Library Committee for the year 1917 was accepted. An appropriation of $50 to the Treasurer's clerk was made. The appointment of the tellers made at the last meeting of the Board was confirmed.

UNDERGRADUATES in mining engineering may be prepared for work by giving them sound instruction in the courses generally considered essential to the profession. The industry is not deeply concerned about the details of those courses. The average man in the coal industry does not wish to insist upon a rigid program. Therefore, he differs little from those in the teaching profession who evidently are not unanimous in their opinions, or all college catalogs would be alike. For the good of the profession, it is just as well that there should be differences in regard to details. It appears that students graduating in mining engineering from the accredited institutions receive similar instruction.

GROWTH of the United States to industrial supremacy in the world is mainly because of the rapid exploitation of natural resources. The easily found high grade mineral resources have been depleted and attention has turned to low-grade ores. Progress has been made from the comparatively crude mining and milling techniques, which sufficed for the rich deposits, to more complex technology for exploiting low-grade ores. In spite of this progress the defense program is pointing up the fact that the mining industry is caught short on ability to produce the needed mineral raw materials. The mining industry is digging itself out of business here in the United States.

An engineering procedure for designing the minimum separation between solution mined caverns in bedded salt deposit is described. The procedure is based on data obtained by in-situ and laboratory test methods. The formulae utilize the concept that salt rock under high pressure in a deep salt rock deposit would behave as a perfectly plastic substance, and that the active opening surrounding a typical cavern could be described by a circular ellipsoid. The paper describes the calculations required for the safe design of a solution mined salt cavern field.

THE tense international situation prevailing in the postwar period, and the outbreak of actual hostilities in Korea, directs attention to the status of United States reserves of strategic and critical materials for war. Geologists and mining and metallurgical engineers are particularly interested in this problem, since, with a few important exceptions, almost all of the materials on the official list of strategic and critical materials for stockpiling (see top of page) are metals and minerals.

The method of spectral transparency was investigated. A device for measuring particle sizes based on this method was developed, tested and applied. The device affords measurements of particle size distribution in the range from 0.1 to 4 µm. It proved possible to measure sizes not only of spherical particles but also of non- spherical ones. The spectral range in which it is necessary to determine transparency for particle size measurements was found.

Coal was produced in this state, by white men, at an earlier date than in any state west of the Mississippi River, and for many years its production was larger than that of any state in that area. The coal immediately adjacent to St. Louis was mined commercially earlier than elsewhere because of a ready market which could be reached by teams. Generally the coal seams are more or less "spotty" in character, and in many places openings made in thick coal could only be mined for a few years. All of the data available from state survey reports, county histories and a few other sources are shown in Table 66.

Garth Crosby has written an excellent geologic description of the deposits surrounding the Gem stocks in the Coeur d'Alene district. The ore deposits in the area of the Gem stocks may hold the key to the age and mineralization history of the entire Coeur d'Alene district. A recent isotopic study of the Coeur d'Alene district in this laboratory illustrates that a classical geologic interpretation of these deposits, with its implications for the whole district, may lead to erroneous conclusions. For this reason it seems pertinent to submit a summary of these results and an interpretation of the mineralizing history of the Coeur d'Alene districts.

MOST previous quantitative work on creep of single crystals has been concerned primarily with developing empirical equations for the creep curve. Although the equations used by Cottrell and Aytekin¹ and Tyndall² represented the data quite well, it was often necessary to use different values of the constants for different specimens even though they were apparently tested under identical conditions. Cykler, Secretary-Treasurer, informs us that the Engineering Societies Club of Hawaii has been established, and that a member of any one of the following organizations is eligible for membership in the Hawaiian club: American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Mining Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, American Society of Naval Engineers, American Railway Engineering Association, American Society for Testing Materials. The main purpose of this club is the entertainment of visitors from the various national organizations above mentioned, and the Secretary will be glad to hear from any one who is making a trip to the Hawaiian Islands. It has been discovered that gold can be extracted from alkaline cyanide solution with primary, secondary, and tertiary amines by adding certain Lewis base modifiers, such as organic phosphorus oxides. Under these circumstances, gold can be extracted at about pH 10, commensurate with the pH of cyanide leach liquors. The selectivity of the amines and amine/modifier combinations for Au(CN)[2] over other metal-cyanide complexes is discussed. Potential applications for the solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions are also discussed.
