ARTICLE I: NAME AND OBJECTS Section 1: This Division shall be known as the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Section 2: The objects shall be to furnish a medium of cooperation between those interested in the metal-lurgy and industry of iron and steel manufacture and use; to represent the A. I. M. E. in so far as ferrous metallurgy is concerned, within the rights given by A. I. M. E. By-law XVII, Section 3, and not incon-sistent with the Constitution and By-Laws of the A. I. M. E.; to hold meetings for social intercourse and the discussion of ferrous metallurgy; to stimulate the writing, presentation and discussion of papers of high quality on ferrous metallurgy; to reject or accept such apers for publication and distribution by-the A. I. M. E. within the limits of the funds available for such purpose. ARTICLE II: MEMBERS Section 1: Any Member, Associate, or Junior Asso-ciate of the A. I. M. E. in good standing may become a Member, Associate or Junior Associate of this Divi-sion upon registering in writing a desire so to do. Section 2: But no one who has been continuously indebted to the. A. I. M. E. or to this Division for more than three months shall be entitled to vote or to receive publications to which, as a member of the Division, he would be entitled.

1. Healthy and active Local Section organizations are vital factors in promoting the vigor and growth of the Institute. 2. Activity on the part of Local Sections should be recognized and stimulated by appropriation of funds from the Institute's treasury; and these appropriations should be as. large as is consistent with the relative needs for other activities. 3. As between different Sections, the amount of such appropriations should be based primarily on the extent of activities as reflected in the number and character of meetings held and the attendance of the members at such meetings. 4. In making a request for funds for any year, the officers of a Local Section should submit a report on the printed form approved by the Directors at their meeting on November 19, 1937. 5. A standing Committee on Local Section Appropriations, consisting of one past Chairman of a Local Section, one member of the Institute's Executive Committee, and one member of the Finance Committee, shall be appointed by the President and shall pass upon requests for appropriations and authorize payments within bounds of the budget. The committee will be guided by the principles herein outlined, always having in mind the vital importance of healthy, active Sections to the, welfare of the Institute as a whole. 6. According to Article XI, Section 2 of the Bylaws, requests for appropriations shall be signed by the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Section. 7. Requests for appropriations must be in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute by February 15 of the year for which they are desired.

Discussion of the paper of H. H. STOEK, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin 129, September, 1917, pp. 1385 to 1419. J. B. WARRINER, Lansford, Pa. (written discussion*).-The figures on costs given at the end of this paper. are of particular interest and it is unfortunate that they necessarily cover such limited periods, as figures giving the costs over a period of at least a year would be of much greater value; for instance, it seems hardly probable that the performances credited to the various shovels for the months for which the costs are given would represent the average of the performances of these machines over a longer period. It would seem to me that the maximum of 4000 cu. yd. (3058 cu. m.) per clay given for the 225 B shovel is much greater than could be maintained for an entire year's operation. On the other hand, the 1500-yd. figure for the 150 B shovel would seem a low average for this type of shovel. In connection with the drag-line excavators, it will be interesting to know that the Lehigh Coal, and Navigation Co. is about to install one of these machines on a clay stripping at their Nesquehoning colliery to excavate an average depth of. overburden of 65 ft. (19 m.), which, due to local conditions, will require that part of the excavated material be handled a second time and a lesser quantity a third time. The results of this operation will undoubtedly be watched with great interest.

An apparatus for agglomerating fine particles was developed in 1969 as a joint effort of Stauffer Chemical and O’Brien Industrial Equipment. Commercial sized units were built for agglomerating home dishwashing detergents. Recently, as a result of further pilot development, variation of bed depth and cage configuration has resulted in a means of controlling the amount of internal classification from a minimum, producing small agglomerates, to a maximum, producing compact rounded agglomerates. Little or no external classification of discharged agglomerates is needed. At maximum internal classification the agglomerates roll on a bed of fine particles rather than the shell resulting in increased agglomerate size.

INTRODUCTION Current design practices for deep tunnels make extensive use of plasticity solutions by Newmark (1970) and Hendron and Aiyer (1971). These solutions are applicable to a circular tunnel subjected to a hydrostatic stress state in a Mohr-Coulomb plastic medium. The role of rockbolts is introduced into these solutions as a uniform internal pressure equivalent to the yield stress of the rockbolt pattern. The application of these solutions is hampered by their inability to consider the biaxial nature of the in-situ stress field or any surcharged stress, such as due to blast loading. As a means of considering the biaxial stress field, designers have turned to relatively costly alternatives, such as the finite element method. The recent work of Detournay (1983) simultaneously provided two generalizations to the state of the art of the analysis of circular tunnels. Whereas the solution of Newmark applies to nondilatant Mohr-Coulomb materials, and that of Hendron and Aiyer applies to materials having associated flow rules, the solution of Detournay covers materials of arbitrary dilatancy. Secondly, Detournay's solution is valid for biaxial stress states, as long as the problem remains statically determinate (St. John, Detournay, and Fairhurst, 1984). The topic of this paper is an investigation of various alternatives for introducing the effects of rockbolts into simple tunnel design charts developed using Detournay's solution. The study was conducted using the BMINES finite element code, into which rockbolt elements have been added (St. John and Van Dillen, 1983). BLAUVELT, Anaconda, Mont.: Mr. Stetefeldt's comparison of the producer-plants at Aspen, Colorado, and Park City, Utah, is of special interest at this time, when the attention of all western metallurgists is so forcibly drawn to the necessity of reducing expenses and losses. The fact that wood was used at Park City before gas was introduced, for firing the Stetefeldt furnace and dryer, offered an excellent opportunity for showing the economies resulting from the adoption of gas in place of wood, as well as a comparison between the two gas-plants. Some time ago Mr. Stetefeldt contributed an article to one of the technical journals, in which the economy obtained by the substitution of gas for wood at this plant was shown quite in detail. I regret not being able to quote from his article at length, but, remember that the total saving effected would pay for the producer-plant in about one month. This is a striking instance of the advantages to be secured by the adoption of the best methods of using fuel in our metallurgical works. In comparing the figures from the Park City and Aspen plants, the difference of over 20 per cent. in the fuel used in the Stetefeldt furnaces, seems remarkable, even considering the larger amount of sulphur in the Aspen ore, and the greater rapidity with which it was roasted. It would be interesting to have Mr. Stetefeldt's, opinion as to the cause of so great a difference. The inferior economy of the revolving dryers at Park City might be overcome by lengthening them, or so arranging a second one above

(written discussion *).-Mr. Stone refers to cadmium as one of the worst impurities in ores used for the production of zinc oxide for pigment purposes, because it is very volatile and its dark brown oxide and bright yellow sulphide both have strong coloring powers so that small fractions of 1 percent. injure the whiteness of the oxide. Numerous tests have recently been made by the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. to determine what effect the percentage of cadmium, as ordinarily present in zinc ores, has upon the color of oxide made from such ores by the usual grate-furnace process. It has been found that while the cadmium is readily volatile and may be detected in the oxide product by chemical analysis, the oxide product is not discolored, but is of a clear white color. Analysis of the 12 leading brands of zinc oxide, French process, lead-free, and leaded grades now on the market for pigment purposes, show them to contain from 0.02 to 0.35 per cent. cadmium, figured as metal. If these proportions of cadmium were present as oxide or sulphide, the percentages would run from approximately 0.022 to 0.40 per cent. in the first case and 0.025 to 0.45 per cent in the latter case. All these grades of oxide are widely used for pigment purposes and are of a clear white color, except the leaded grades, the whiteness of which may be diminished by the lead sulphate. Duquesne Light Co. and CAI Consultants, Inc. conducted a demonstration program to establish permanent vegetative cover directly on acidic, deep coal mine refuse. Several plots were treated with formulas varying in soil amendment application rates and plant speak. Periodic monitoring of refuse chemistry indicated when maintenance applications of seed and soil amendments were required. To establish drainage control, the site had to be regraded. The most successful experimental formula was used as the bank for the formula applied to regraded portions of the site. Specific treatment for acidic spots has been initiated. Results of the program indicate that adequate permanent vegetation has been established.

The control of autogenous grinding circuits is very similar to the control of conventional grinding circuits. In both circuits the classifier must be operated to achieve the required degree of mineral liberation. Crude ore grade and grinding mill density are important in both circuits. The biggest difference between the control of the two circuits is the pronounced effect that crude ore changes have on autogenous circuits. The importance of crude grade, weight recovery, size and hardness is greatly magnified because the crude ore in the autogenous circuit is also supplying the grinding media. Crude ore sizing is a particularly critical factor in achieving efficient primary autogenous milling. Because of the above, computer control is advantageous for autogenous circuits. Changes in crude ore may necessitate rapid changes in the entire circuit control strategy, and only a computer can facilitate these changes. Also, the techniques of control are very different for conventional and for autogenous grinding. Set-point control is usually satisfactory in conventional circuits, but the multiplicity of varying conditions in an autogenous circuit usually require some type of computer optimizing search routine. Autogenous mills can be separated into two general types. In primary autogenous mills the media is obtained from the mill feed, and in pebble mills the sized pebble media is added separately from the material being ground. I would like to commend the author on his description of Pinto Valley's plant, and its interesting innovations. The author's discussion of 18 ft in diameter by 21 ft long primary ball mills (the largest wet ball mills made to date) is of considerable importance to those who have been engaged in the field of studying ball mill liner wear as it relates to various grinding installations. While it is stated that the mills have operated on a fixed tonnage and therefore it has been difficult to determine the best liner pattern, calculations from the data in the paper indicates that for mills 1, 2, 5, and 6, the tonnage per hour varies from a low of 223 for mill No. 1, up to a high of 314, for mill No. 2, while mills 5 and 6 calculate 285 and 246, respectively. Analysis of the wear patterns for the single wave liners used in mill No. 1 as compared to the double wave liners in mill No. 2, suggests that the author's data may tell more than he suspects about liner wear to be expected and thus what should be a best pattern selection from what may appear to be only limited hours of operation. [Fig. A] is a reproduction of author's [Fig. 10], to which wear forecast patterns [F-1 and F-2] have been added. Forecasts are based on many previous studies of large diameter ball mill operations over many years of field service. Calculations from the first-wear pattern provide an initial wear rate of only 13 lb of liner per 100 sq ft of shell liner surface per day, or 0.031 lb per to: ground. The rate of reaction of cuprite was measured in a series of sulphuric acid solutions, from which oxygen had been excluded, at various concentrations and temperatures. The overall reaction CuzO + H2S04 + Cu " + CuO + H20 + So4' may be explained quantitatively by two simultaneous rate reactions involving not only H+ but also the hydrolytic adsorption of H2SO4. The results indicate the importance of considering surface mass balance relationships associated with heterogeneous surface reactions. T EACHING has long been an important method for the recovery of metals from certain minerals. Many processes have assumed minor importance in modern practice but such operations as the recovery of uranium and present interest in high pressure-high temperature solution of sulphides' ' well illustrate the importance of leaching as a unit operation. Little quantitative information is available in a form sufficient to determine the mechanism of solution at the solid-aqueous solution interface for given systems. For this reason, it is important that fundamental studies of leaching processes be conducted so that parameters associated with such surface reactions may be understood and correlated. Cuprite was chosen for this study as a result of a recent investigation carried out at the University of Utah on ores of the Ray and Chino Mines Divs. of the Kennecott Copper Corp. These sulphide deposits contain sufficient oxidized minerals, such as cuprite, malachite, and azurite, so that recovery of metal values contained in the oxidized fraction is of primary interest. THE short-time tensile-strength test, while it has not attained the practical importance of the creep test at elevated temperatures, has the advantage of being rapid and is satisfactory for determining relative strengths. For platinum and its alloys, which frequently are used at high temperatures under ill-defined conditions, the short-time test provides useful data that aid in the selection of the most promising alloy for each use. Measurements have been made upon 13 alloys, using wire 0.0031 in. in diameter, the choice of alloys and of wire size being determined by the requirements of a practical problem. Later the measurements were extended to higher temperatures by the use of heavier wire, 0.010 in, in diameter. APPARATUS The use of fine wire made the necessary equipment very simple, since no effort was made to measure the elongation. A small platinum-wound horizontal furnace was used, ½ in. in internal diameter by 1 ft. long, with the wire threaded through it. The wire, clamped at one end while the other ran over a ball-bearing pulley, of a total length of 29 in., was loaded directly by running sea sand into an attached basket, making the rate of loading and not of elongation constant. The sand flowed from a funnel, under a head of 3 in., into the basket. 3 in. below the orifice, at the rate of 170 grants per minute. Pulley friction and bending resist-ance of the wire as well as the force of impact of the sand could be neg-lected, being 3 grams and 0.5 grams, respectively. Furnace temperature .was uniform within ±5° C. over a length of 3 in., although a drift with time occurred, the largest amount being 20° C. No provision was necessary for a controlled atmosphere.

Most of what has been written during the past few years on marine mineral resources has emphasized the vast potential of the ocean, and its floor, as a source of the vital mineral raw materials upon which our modern technological society depends. Computations have been made to demonstrate that the sea contains sufficient minerals to support any reasonable world population indefinitely. The importance of these resources from the standpoint of strengthening the national mineral resource base has been pointed out. And though the information upon which these conclusions are based is sketchy, essentially qualitative, and often conflicting, there can be no doubt that the mineral potential of the sea is tremendous and that there are compelling reasons for working toward its exploitation. Unfortunately, there has been little emphasis on the problems that must be overcome, from the perspective of the economics of mineral production. Some of these problems have been noted, and some authors have appraised them realistically. However, many proposed solutions have been more romantic than practical, from the standpoint of both technology and economics. As a result the general impression has been given, particularly to those uninitiated in the realities of mineral production, that the mineral wealth of the sea is there for the taking-requiring only a good modicum of courage and technologic innovation to place it within easy grasp. But developing the capability necessary for substantial, profitable production of sea bottom minerals will be far from easy. It will be accomplished much more quickly if the problems are faced squarely, defined properly, and attacked in an orderly, logical sequence. While this approach may lack glamour, it offers the highest probability for success.

In one of the largest dredging projects of its kind, Lake Asbestos of Quebec Ltd. is stripping overlying mud and sand from the bed of a lake to reach asbestos orebodies 70 to 200 ft below surface. Black Lake, about two miles long by half a mile wide, was almost overlooked in the search for asbestos in Quebec's ore-rich eastern townships-a search that has been underway there ever since the first asbestos was mined in 1877. Not until 1948 was the Black Lake mineral discovered. Four years later careful exploration was carried out by American Smelting & Refining Co., parent firm of Lake Asbestos. The search involved more than 75,000 ft of diamond drilling and about 5000 ft of underground work. ASARCO, in its first asbestos mining project, decided to proceed with a dredging and draining program to prepare for open pit mining.

This paper deals with the calculation of the composition of the infinitesimal trace of alloy that transfers from the liquid to the solid state at each temperature during the equilibrium solidification of a binary solid solution, and which thereby enables the compositions of the coexisting liquid and solid phases to follow along the liquidus and solidus lines respectively during the cooling. A general expression for the composition (d) of the liquid-to-solid transfer at each temperature has been derived: d = ZLXL(XL - P) + Zsxs(P- ZL(XL - P) + Zs(P - Xs) where ZL and Zs are the slopes of the liquidus and solidus lines at the given temperature, XL and xs are the composi-tions of the stable liquid and solid phases at the same temperature, and P is the composition of the alloy under considera-tion. The d equation is valid for the process of equilibrium heating as well as cooling, and may be applied to vapor-to-liquid, vapor-to-solid, liquid-to-liquid, and solid-to-solid transfers if the corresponding equilibrium diagrams are known. At each intermediate tem-perature, the composition of the liquid-to-solid transfer differs by a finite amount from those of the two coexisting phases. Therefore, during equilibrium cooling, the transfers must merge into the solid phase from the liquid without forming a transition phase; otherwise the condition of equilibrium would be violated. Any society of undergraduates at a technical school, comprising students in any branch of engineering, metallurgy, chemistry, geology, etc, may be recognized by the Board of Directors in its discretion as an Affiliated Student Society, and its name, to¬gether with the names of its president and its secretary, may be published in MINING AND METALLURGY or the DIRECTORY of the Institute. The members of such a society will not be named individually on the membership list of the Institute, but may at any time be proposed for election as associates or junior associates of the Institute, in the usual way. 2. Membership in an Affiliated Student Society, certified by the official representative thereof, and accompanied by suitable testimony as to character and qualifications, will have special weight with the Membership Committee of the Institute, in its consideration of the proposal of a candidate for membership. The Affiliated Student Societies receive the following privileges: 1 A copy of MINING AND METALLURGY free; 2. The use of Employment Service; 3. The use of MINING AND METALLURGY for publicity purposes, such as printing notices of their activities, etc ; 4. Assistance in obtaining speakers for their meetings, lists of moving-picture films, etc. To retain the privileges of the Affiliated Student Society, its officers must keep in touch with the Secretary of the Institute and advise him of its activities. The foregoing plan is not confined to students in mining engi¬neering or metallurgy. Any undergraduate society of engineers may avail itself of the privileges offered. Societies desiring to be recognized as Affiliated Student Societies are requested to make application to the Secretary of the Institute, giving particulars as to their nature, membership and officers. The accompanying list gives the names of the Affiliated Student Societies as of April 15, 1927, and their presidents and secretaries, in so far as they have been reported to the Secretary of the Insti¬tute.

THE township of Cloncurry is situated in the northwestern part of Queensland, about latitude S. 20° 42' 53" and longitude E: 140° 30' 25". Townsville is the port through which all the trade passes and is about 470 miles east-northeast of Cloncurry township. The Cloncurry copper district covers an area about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide. Unfortunately the mines are very scattered over this area, there being no large groups of mines. Mount Elliott mine is situated about 70 miles south from the township of Cloncurry, and Mount Oxide mine about 150 miles north of Cloncurry. The district has been known for the last 35 years, and in the early stages a large amount of capital was expended with little to show for it; but within the last four years the railway has been extended from Townsville to Mount Elliott and about 40 miles north of Cloncurry, which has made possible the treatment of the ores of the mines on this extension. The Mount Elliott company within the last few years has smelted and converted on its mine 169,688 tons. of ore for 20,554 tons of blister copper, containing 20,377 tons of copper, 35,642 oz. of gold and 28,841 oz. of silver, at a cost of about £33 per ton of blister copper, f.o.b. Townsville. This cost included all ' development, wages, salaries, general management, office, agency, legal expenses, freight, etc. The gold and silver contents would practically pay for freight to Europe, refining, realization charges, etc. The costs of supplies are as follows: Firewood 15s., coke, 75s., mine timber, 54s., and coal, 60s. per long ton; explosives: dynamite and gelignite, 50s. and blasting gelatine, 65s. 6d. per case.

In low temperature phase diagrams, liquidus curves below about 1500°C are relatively easily established, e.g., by thermal analysis or separation of coexisting solid and liquid phases, followed by chemical analysis. Experimental difficulties increase considerably at higher temperatures and in systems involving more reactive metals. Although there are now thermocouples available for use from 1600" to 2400°c, as summarized by Caldwell,' the need for frequent calibration, aging, and contamination problems, and unavailability of suitable protection tubes has sharply limited their use at higher temperatures. Many of the high melt- ing metals are found to react with refractory oxides. TO avoid such problems, a frequently used procedure is the diffusion and saturation method, as described by Spedding et a1.' for the system La-C. This technique involves the annealing of one metal or a suitable alloy in a crucible of the other element at a temperature above the melting point, followed by chemical analysis of the center of the melt, after equilibrium is established. Further, if an alloy system is to be investigated employing the electron microbeam probe, and calibration charts have been established, it may be possible to measure the alloy concentration at the center of a cored as-cast structure, and to conclude from this points on the liquidus curve in a manner similar to the one to be described. It is known that in phases with a broad homogeneity range the rapidly cooled, cored, as-cast structure of an alloy presents concentrations having different lattice constants; this spread of lattice constant values contributes to the broadened lines of a powder pattern for the as-cast condition. The region of the crystal which is first to solidify will then correspond to the edge of the lines if the change of the lattice parameters with concentration is monotonous. Tube stills having demonstrated their usefulness for refining operations, the later developments in their design have been in the direction of improved thermal efficiency. The earlier designs operated with low furnace temperatures and large volumes of furnace gas because the fuel was burned with much excess air. It was quite possible to provide sufficient heating surface to lower the temperature of the flue gas to within 150" of the temperature of the inlet oil, or when inlet-oil tempera-tures were high to have the flue gas escape at 300" or 350" F. by using the heat remaining in the flue gas from the still to preheat the air supplied for combustion. But even so, the thermal efficiency was low because of the large quantity of air used for combustion. The large quantity of excess air was required to burn the fuel in the furnace at a temperature low enough to prevent overheating the furnace walls and overheating of the oil. Supplying heat to the tubes of the heating surface at a rate beyond the capabilities of the oil to absorb, except with a considerable difference between the temperature of the inside of the tube and oil passing through, would result in overheating the tubes and the oil in contact with them. For these reasons it was very necessary in the older types of tube stills to burn the fuel with large quantities of excess air, resulting in low thermal efficiency despite the low flue-gas temperature. Neglecting loss by radiation, the thermal efficiency could be improved only by burning the fuel with less excess air, but it was necessary to accomplish this without upsetting the furnace temperature conditions existing when large quantities of excess air were used. There are several methods of bringing this about, such as controlling the furnace temperature by returning a proportion of the flue gas to the furnace, or by exposing direct to the fire a heat-absorbing surface so located and proportioned that sufficient heat will be absorbed by radiation to prevent excessive furnace temperatures.

AMONG the half-dozen major research search projects now being conducted at the Michigan College of Minim, and Technology under the terms of an FERA grant, an important one relates to the use of suspensions in ore dressing. The study has resulted from the constantly widening industrial use of metals and minerals. The modest demands of a few decades ago for these minerals could be easily met from richer deposits. Now, at least in some localities, the richer deposits are nearing exhaustion. Furthermore, advances in the industrial arts and the competition of other minerals and metals have changed the specifications of materials needed by the manufacturers. Premiums and penalties enter into the sale value. Hence, to meet the requirements for amount and quality, washing and other ore-dress-
