The first large scale application of radio remote control equipment to standard gage railroad trains has been achieved at the Morenci mine of Phelps Dodge Corp. at Morenci, Ariz. Twenty or more ore and waste haulage trains are remote control operated at any one time, each with a one-man crew. Reduction of train crews from two men to one man has materially lowered the total cost of train operation. Elimination of brakemen has also resulted in an improvement in train efficiency brought about by a shortening of train haulage cycle times.

If one is to place any credence at all in the reports published in the daily press, the subject of conservation has been a very lively topic of conversation during the past 60 days, and it does not appear that the temperature of the summer months has been in any way moderated by the discussion. It is a subject in which we are all vitally interested and to which, so far as our mineral resources are concerned, both the Institute and the Geological Survey have liberally contributed. The report of the National Conservation Commission, appointed by President Roosevelt, contains a series of papers on the conservation of mineral resources, all of which were prepared by members of the Geological Survey and were compiled largely from information previously collected by that Federal bureau in the performance of its regular duties. Located in the Elliot Lake mining district of Canada, the Denison mine lies between Sudbury to the east and Sault Ste. Marie to the west. This area is overlain by Huronian sediments filling a basin in the Keewatin basement complex. Subsequent folding of these sediments developed a synclinal structure, known locally as the Quirke Lake Trough, which forms the northern portion of the now famous big Z structure, the geological trademark of this region. Plunging to the west and extending nine miles from the granite outcropping in the north to the Keewatin lava contact to the south, the syncline has dips of 10° to 45° on the north limb and 10° to 20° on the south limb.

Site-specific blast vibration prediction can be more accurate than using a universal prediction equation. Vibrations from 37 blasts were monitored using three seismographs. Data analysis showed that square root, cube root, and site-specific scaling predicted ground motion with equal reliability. Imprecise prediction is caused by geologic and blast variability, particularly, inaccurate delay times. Vibrations at some mines were consistently lower or higher than vibrations predicted from US Bureau of Mines (USBM) equations. Vibration restrictions based on USBM studies could then be too conservative or too lenient. Predominant vibration frequencies were generally less than 50 Hz, but several blasts had significant energy up to 125 Hz. In some cases, energy was concentrated at frequencies corresponding to delay intervals.

Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners.

The effect of poisoning on the behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in metallurgical systems was studied in the presence of such inorganic surfactants as cyanide and sulfide and such organic surfactants as dodecylammonium acetate, trimethyldodecylammonium chloride, potassium ethyl xanthate, and potassium diethyl dithiophosphate (Aerofloat®). These chemical species represent, more or less, typical constituents encountered in leaching, flotation, and sewage treatment systems. Triangular wave voltammetry was used as the experimental technique to study the nature of poisoned surfaces. Among the species studied hydrogen sulfide and dodecylamine were found to form a resistant surface film affecting charge transfer. Platinum electrodes appeared to have a weaker tendency to adsorb sulfide species in alkaline pH ranges, while cyanide, xanthate, and dithiophosphate affected the normal electrode behavior differently. Possible methods of reactivation of a poisoned electrode by mechanical cleaning are suggested.

A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 Rc was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique. Weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure erosion, it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Corrosion rate, erosion rate, and total erosion/corrosion rate are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

THE production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic indus-tries in the United, States with a capital investment-about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines1 in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. Modern mineral processing plants could not operate efficiently, or even exist, without instruments which indicate, record, control, and in some cases anticipate the many changes that occur in a process. Even in plants which are operated manually, instruments are used to tell the operator when he should turn a valve or press a handswitch. Accordingly, all mineral processing plant engineering and construction projects must give careful consideration to this area of design activity.

THE mineralogy of blast furnace sinter is of interest because its mineral content is one of the important factors contributing to its character. There are so many other factors affecting the properties of the sinter, however, that it is well to mention them here. The proportion and character of the raw materials, that is, raw ores, concentrates, returns, and fuel, as well as the mixing and the water content, all have a marked effect on the physical properties of the product and the degree to which sintering action can be carried on. The process of sintering is a relatively fast operation. In as much as appreciable time is required to carry on processes of fusion in such masses of low thermal conductivity, large lumps of hematite ore frequently remain unfused and partly unchanged in state of oxidation in the sintering process. The kind, the grain size, and the amount of fuel used affect both the completeness of the fluxing reaction and the prevailing atmosphere. The rate of reduction in laboratory tests is not only dependent upon the state of oxidation of the sinter but also upon the sizing and porosity. Atmosphere and temperature affect the state of oxidation of the iron oxide, and the atmosphere alone may determine the ferrous minerals that finally develop. The rate and extent of cooling, the type of coolant, the subsequent handling, and screening all have serious effects upon the type of sinter that eventually enters blast furnace bins. The degree to which actual fusion or fluxing takes place in the sintering operation has a marked effect upon density. A sinter which has been extensively fused by high content of fuel in the batch will no doubt have a higher weight on the bulk basis than one which had a lower fuel content. As high temperatures are required to do this job, the iron oxide under these conditions will be largely magnetite. Sintering at low temperatures to produce larger proportions of hematite means a decrease in the amount of liquid formed and a much more sensitive bonding process. In this case the liquid must be distributed more uniformly and thereby used more efficiently than would be the case where higher temperatures were permitted to prevail more or less indiscriminately. Where coarse ore particles are used in a sinter mix it is not expected that any particles coarser than 1/4-in. can be fused and incorporated in the system to such an extent that the gangue contained within these lumps will have been converted or fused by the sintering process. It is for this reason that coarse ore, returns, or both, in a sinter usually result in a sinter which breaks easily and at the same time may contain some of the original minerals of the lump, such as quartz and hematite. In examination of sinters at Bethlehem Steel Co. minerals such as quartz and corundum have been found, none of which are considered normal associ- ates of wustite or magnetite. Some degree of heterogeneity or lack of equilibrium is not unusual in the sintering process. The differences in specific gravity between hematite and magnetite might be ample reason for poor strength in a not very well sintered mass containing coarse particles of. ore or returns. The shrinkage taking place in a lump of hematite in its conversion to magnetite by temperature and/or atmosphere is appreciable. Sintering of ores as it is carried out is crude chemistry, for the grain size is relatively coarse, the application of heat is certainly not uniform, and the time factor is inadequate for other than partial completion of reactions. Coarse lumps of coke or coal cause local heating around these centers, and fuel which is too fine may result in such slow burning that sufficiently high temperatures are not always obtained. High temperatures are essential to the work required. The Swedish practice of sintering is established on the basis of producing an easily reducible product high in hematite. This is achieved through uniformity of grain size in the sinter mix and close control of the temperature through careful regulation of fuel and sintering rates. This produces a sinter which is very tough in character and which has a high degree of porosity. Although the hematite content is not produced upon cooling by drawing air through the mass, there would be greater possibility of accomplishing this reaction with this type of sinter than is the case in American practice. In the latter, the temperatures are so high that temperature alone converts most of the mass to magnetite. The grains are so coarse in the final product that together with the fluxed condition it would be difficult to reoxidize them to hematite upon cooling. An examination of the iron-oxygen diagram' shows that hematite does not exist above 2651°F. It also shows that there is no liquid in the pure magnetite-hematite system until 2881°F is reached. On the other hand, in the system magnetite-wustite liquids exist at considerably lower temperatures than this. It will be seen, therefore, considering only the iron oxides, that the bonding action obtained in America in sinters comes about through considerable temperature and/or reducing conditions that produce compositions containing even less oxygen than is contained in magnetite or than results from the fusion of silicates. The bonding obtained from the iron oxides is encouraged by the reducing conditions that prevail in the vicinity of the fuel particles in a mass of this sort, where temperatures are above 2600°F. As magnetite and wustite are opaque, they do not lend themselves to petrographic study by transmitted polarized light. The silicates found in sinter and the glass that has not crystallized transmit light and can be studied by these methods in which indices of refraction and other optical properties of anisotropic crystals lead to their definite identification. The index of refraction is the only property that can be measured in glass under the microscope, and this is a clue to its probable approximate composition.

THE Castle Dome copper deposit is of the porphyry type and occurs in a body of quartz monzonite intruded into the pre-Cambrian formations and possibly into the lower part of Paleozoic limestones. The hypogene sulphide minerals include pyrite, chalcopyrite, and a little molybdenite, sphalerite, and galena. Pyrite and chalcopyrite are disseminated or occur in small closely spaced veins. The hypogene mineralization shows distinct zoning in the distribution of pyrite and chalcopyrite, so that the mineralized area can be subdivided into pyrite and chalcopyrite zones. Supergene enrichment, though not extensive, played an important part in the formation of the ore body, the chalcopyrite zone being the protore. Several thin, gently dipping, diabase sills occur in the mineralized area, and the copper content of the rock in and near these sills is substantially higher than average. The formation of the ore body was caused by the combined effects of three forces: I. Zoning of the hypogene mineralization, 2. Richer copper metallization associated with the diabase sills, and 3. Supergene enrichment.

Geological investigation and research have contributed greatly in making industrial minerals the basis of an important industry in the state. North Carolina contains a wide variety of industrial minerals and rock. Mica, feldspar, kaolin, halloysite, talc, pyrophyllite, silli-manite, and spodumene are used to illustrate the progress being made. IN a previous paper1 an attempt was made to indicate the importance of industrial minerals in North Carolina and the wide variety of such materials present. The present paper is concerned with geological investigation and research which have made industrial minerals the basis of an important industry in the state. Geological mapping has gone through three stages in North Carolina during the present century. The first stage is represented by excellent reports of which Corundum and the Peridotites of Western North Carolina,2 Volume I, now a classic, is representative. In this report, a geologic map of the western third of the state is shown on a scale of 10 miles to the inch. The next stage is represented by folios" of the U. S. Geological Survey published between 1902 and 1932. Most of these contained 30 min quadrangle maps on a scale of 2 miles to the inch. The third step is represented by reports prepared during the past 10 years which contain geological maps4 on scales varying from 500 ft to 1 mile to the inch, while many mine maps have been prepared on scales varying from 20 to 150 ft to the inch. As the scale on which geological mapping has been done has decreased, the amount of information secured has increased. INTRODUCTION In June 1962, the first attempt at longwall mining in Illinois was initiated by Old Ben Coal Company in their No. 21 Mine. Longwalling was continued intermittently using various supports until April 1970. During this period, longwall mining techniques were used on separate occasions at six faces within Mine No. 21. However, due to various problems that developed at each location the faces were eventually terminated. The most significant problems concerned the support systems and roof conditions that were present in the mine during each attempt. Between 1965 and 1972, similar conditions were met by Freeman Coal mining Company during four attempts at longwall mining in their Orient No. 5 and Orient No. 6 mines. In 1975, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Old Ben Coal Company entered into a cost-sharing agreement to demonstrate the application of longwall mining in Illinois. The first phase of the demonstration was to conduct a premining investigation to review previous attempts at longwall mining, perform rock mechanics tests, and establish support requirements based on the lnvestigation results. The information obtained during the demonstration at Old Ben's No. 24 has been utilized to optimize subsequent face equipment and panel geometry. Mining of the first panel began in September 1976 and was successfully completed in May 1977, and two additional panels were mined under the cooperative agreement. Currently, Old Ben Coal Company is the only longwall mining operator in Illinois. In addition to the face in Mine No. 24, five longwall faces are being operated in four other mines.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE theory of elasticity, the science of the strength of materials, and all our calculations regarding engineering structures are based on Hooke's law, that in loaded bodies the deformations are, proportional to the load producing them. Without this law it would be impossible to design intelligently engineering structures such as bridges, frames, axles, etc. This being the case, the proportional limit,1 that is, the point at which deformation ceases to be proportional to load, is the most important factor in engineering design. Further, the working fiber stress should be fixed in reference to the proportional limit instead of, as is usual, in reference to the ultimate strength. The incorrect use of the ultimate strength instead of the proportional limit in setting the working fiber stress is probably clue to two reasons: (1) it is a more delicate operation to measure the proportional limit; (2) it is usually -assumed, though incorrectly, that the proportional limit is determined by the ultimate -strength. In Germany the point at which permanent set first appears is often taken instead of the proportional limit. The two points will coincide if Gerstner's law, that elastic deformations are proportional to the loads producing them both before and after permanent set, is true; and the limit of proportionality and the elastic limit or point of permanent set will both 'be represented on a stress-strain diagram, by the point at which the line ceases to be a straight line and becomes curved-or changes its inclination. It is to be further noted that the difference in definition between proportional limit and elastic limit introduces a difference in methods of determination in the testing laboratory. This paper includes a brief classification of dry-cleaning devices, with a theoretical discussion of the principles involved. It outlines the methods of handling dust and screening difficulties at the McComas plant, as well as other plants that are being constructed and other dry-cleaning devices being developed. It describes the American Pneumatic Separator and discusses the sizing required, the effect of moisture in the raw coal, disposition of the middlings, and other aspects of the process. It gives s results of tests on various coals, and results of operation at Raton and McComas. DRY CLEANING, or pneumatic separation, is not, strictly speaking, a recent discovery. Among the archives of the Patent Office may be found many patents dating back as far as 1850 which cover early attempts to separate materials of varying specific gravity or of different shape by means of air. Hundreds of patents covering this art have been issued, which may be roughly classified into four general groups, as follows: 1. Stationary devices with pulsating air currents. The separating surface is usually riffled and air is supplied by bellows or compressors. This group' also includes air jigs, which have been used rather extensively. 2. Stationary devices with continuous air currents. These submitted the material to a continuous current of air, either horizontal or vertical. Chaff is blown from wheat by such a device. 3. Reciprocating or vibrating devices with pulsating air. A small group in which the pulsating air is supplied by bellows and some motion provided in the separating surface to move the stratified material to various discharge points. 4. Reciprocating or vibrating devices with continuous air supply. This is by far the most important group and all recent developments have been along this line. All of the above groups involve the stratification of material by air and include none of the dry methods that use other principles, such as coefficient of friction, magnetism, etc.

With each year bringing the exploration of deeper and deeper producing horizons in the effort to maintain production, the problem of lifting the oil to the surface is continually becoming more difficult. Flowing and gas-lift wells eventually decline to such a point that pumping is necessary. The increasing loads on sucker rods resulting from deeper pumping operations are approaching the ultimate strength of the rods with consequent reduction in the factor of safety. With this diminishing factor of safety, the vibratory stresses causing fatigue, crystallization, and ultimate fracture become more important. These vibratory stresses are the result of varied pumping conditions which, if properly understood and investigated, may be eliminated to a great extent. To accomplish this purpose, a recording dynameter has been developed which gives an indicator card showing the actual load on the polished rod at each point of the pumping cycle. Recording Dynamometer The instrument consists of a dynamometer head of the piston and cylinder type filled with castor oil, and a recording device, the movable card holder being connected with the dynamometer through a system of levers and the hollow spring gage connected with the fluid chamber of the dynamometer by a high-pressure flexible tube. The dynamometer head is hung from the beam with an ordinary hanger and lugs on the cylinder, while the piston is attached to the polished rod. The movable card holder actuated through levers moves in a vertical direction pro-portionate to the movement of the polished rod. The recording arm of the hollow spring gage inscribes on the card the pressure at all times. Thus by proper scales, the indicator card gives the load on the polished rod at all points in the pumping cycle. Fig. 1 shows the hookup of the recording dynamometer at a pumping well.

MINING men in general- are a roving lot but not so Selwyn G. Blaylock. Immediately after graduation from McGill in 1899 he went to the Trail smelter and he is there today though he spent three or four years of his early professional life at other British Columbia mining centers. Either he sensed the great possibilities of the company of which he is now vice-president and general manager, or it sensed his; more probably both. Certainly the association was a happy and fortunate one.

Among the bills now pending in Congress is one to authorize exploration for and disposition of coal, phosphate, sodium, oil, oil shale, and gas on, public domain. One, to provide protection and government revenue for potash and for zinc ores and products. One to prevent withdrawal of mineral lands from entry and occupancy by law, also to promote, production of quicksilver, tungsten, sulfate, pyrites, and sulfur, and of manganese and manganiferous ores. Three resolutions have been introduced to suspend requirements of annual assessment work on mining claims during year 1919 and one to relieve owners of mining claims mustered into military service.

THE emphasis in some political quarters on hemispheric unity and defense indicates Latin American mineral resources should be more extensively developed. However, United States mining companies have, in many instances, been discouraged by the laws of southern neighbors. At the same time, some of the countries have liberalized their mining laws in an effort to attract investments from the United States. The resultant confusion has been detrimental to all concerned. Ownership of Mineral Deposits Examination of the mining codes of Latin American countries shows that, without exception, governments reserve the right of direct ownership of all mineral resources. Ownership can be divided between the Feredal Government and the states or among the Federal Government, the states, and private individuals. However, in the majority of the nations constitutional authority vests all mineral rights solely in the Federal Government. Mexico is the only country that has expressed Federal ownership as imprescriptible; the other republics have not defined the exact significance of government ownership. The implication derived from the general economic and political climate is that all mineral resources are ultimately to be regarded as a national heritage. Whether a concession granted to an individual or corporation carries any right of private property is shaded with a variety of meanings. The exceptions at one extreme are Argentina and Bolivia, whose laws state explicitly that a concession granted to a juridical person is an act of the state, and the land becomes the private property of the individual, and the concessions constitute real property. However, in Mexico mining concessions or grants do not create rights of fee-simple ownership. The concession only conveys the exclusive right to explore, develop, and work the deposits. The mining property remains the property of the state. In some instances exploitation concessions represent a compromise between private and government ownership. In Honduras the period granted to a mining enterprise is fixed at 90 years. At the end of that time, the enterprise and all installations revert to the state without compensation.
