THE kaolins of the southeastern United States were known to civiliza-tion as early as the latter part of the eighteenth century-and yet the GEORGIA PRODUCTION UNITED STATES PRODUCTION IMPORTS Fig. 1.-KAOLIN PRODUCTION AND IMPORTS. commercial history of Georgia kaolins may be said to begin in the year 1900. The U. S. Bureau of Mines reported for that year a production of 6885 tons of "miscellaneous" clays in Georgia. A comparison of these figures with those of 1934, when the production rose to 284,556 tons (65 per cent of the domestic production), indicates the growing economic and technologic importance of this raw material. Fig. 1 clearly shows that a part of the increase is due to a normal growth in the use of kaolinitic clays and a part is due to replacement of clays formerly imported.

IN a recently reported investigation, J. B. Clark and F. N. Rhines1 used a diffusion couple technique to determine the number of intermetallic phases which should be present in the Al-Mg equilibrium phase diagram. Their method was an application of the following generally accepted principle. If a diffusion couple made up of two metals is annealed at a given temperature for a long time, all the phases of the binary system which exist under equilibrium conditions at the diffusion temperature will form intermetallic layers. It is important that the diffusion temperature be high enough and the diffusion time be long enough to permit the nuclea-tion of all thermodynamically stable phases at the interface of the couples and their growth to observable thicknesses. These simple time-temperature criteria are at times difficult to satisfy, and it is the purpose of this note to point out a situation in which this is the case. MANY investigators, in their discussions, have reasoned that the ductile-brittle transition in iron could be explained by the intrusion of cleavage into the normal slip process. The purpose of this note is to apply the laws of critical normal stress for cleavage and critical shear stress for slip to explain the orientation and temperature dependence of the ductile-brittle transition in body-centered cubic metals. It will be found that within a certain temperature range, single crystals tested in tension will cleave or slip, depending on their orientation. WATER provides to many mineral industries functions similar to those performed by money in the economic system. Water is a medium of exchange. It is also required in chemical reaction for cooling, for transfer of minerals, and for cleaning. To a great extent, water is also a raw material in almost every industrial operation; it becomes a component of the finished product. In the Rocky Mountain region, water is treated with a great deal of respect. There has not been enough of it when needed. Long ago storage facilities were planned and devised to assure a supply during periods of shortages. This comes from the history of the region in irrigation and mineral processing. Within this region the shovel was always the most lethal weapon used in settling disputes over the use or misuse of water.

AS IS evident from the discussion in previous chapters, the methods by which an open-hearth heat may be made are numerous, but any heat, in the ingot form, may be classified as one of three types, depending upon the degree of deoxidation to which the metal is subjected. These are rimmed, semikilled, and killed, and desirable ingot structures, from the standpoint of distribution of porosity, are illustrated in Fig. 63. These are the most useful types of ingot structure [ ] and represent three stages in the continuous series from "wild" to "dead killed" (see Fig. 23, page 46) ; some of the variations of each type are discussed later in the chapter. The choice of ingot structure and of finishing practice used to produce the desired metal action in the molds is determined by consideration of: 1. Specified final analysis. As an example, the production of rimmed steels is mostly limited to carbon contents below 0.30 per cent and manganese contents below 0.60 per cent; on the other hand the production of low-carbon killed steel requires greater care.

INTRODUCTION Before discussing the use of the free piston; it may be well to explain briefly the type of gas lift valves with which the loo] is designed to function. The gas lift valve ii nothing more or less than a small back pressure regulator. It; construction consists of an outer hous ing covering a seamless metallic bellows in such a way as in form a sealed pressure vessel or pressure dome. To the bellow* in attached a stem and to this stem is attached a .rating member. When the valve is run into the hole, a pre-delermined pressure charge is placed in the pressure dome. As shown in Fig. 1. the valve is furnished in four different major assem-blies. to accomplish good results in different types of wells. The valve is mounted on a pup joint (Fig. 2a) : the eoin-plele assembly is entered into the tubing siring at the desired location. Each valve is furnished with a revere flow check valve (Fig. 2-b) to eliminate any back wash through the mechanism. Valve action is as follows: At any time the casing pressure is allowed to exceed the pressure forces within the pressure dome of the valve, the valve simply opens and passes gas from the rasing annulus into the tubing. When the casing pressure forces arc allowed to bleed to a force less than the pressure force within the dome, of the valve. the valve closes. With this type of construction. it is possible to open and close the valve or valves at will from the surface, the medium of the gas pressure in the rasing annnlus. The cycle of operation is governed by a tine cycle motor valve, commonly referred to as a gas lift interutitter or gas life surfacr controller (Fig. 3). In actual practice. after the well is unloaded only one valve is in operation . . . all other valve.: remain in the closed position. On pre-determined time cycles, it is possible to open and close this operating valve at will, and to pass the desired amount of gas through this valve wheneler needed. This method of gas lift is widelv used and has been found In be very efficient. However, it has long been known that even greater efficiency would be obtained if it were possible to place Piston between the injected gas and the fluid head. The free piston which will be discussed here was designed to accomplish this end and has been found to do so with very satisfactory results. DESIGN AND OPERATION OF THE FREE PISTON Basically. the free piston consist- of a telescoping assembly in which are incorporated the various control and operating parts (Fig. A set of sleeve valves which are opened and closed by movement of the telescoping section is contained in the. tool. A cross section of the free piston is shown in Fig. 4-11, 'rile main body cotain- a seamless monel bellows of the same type as that generally used in pressure charged gas lift valves (Fig. 4-c), and a valve core to permit placing a pressure charge in the bellows before the free piston is placed in service. The bellows is the main control unit of the free piston and performs two function: 1. It governs the opening and closing of the sleeve valves. a.: dictated by the producing activities of the well in which the piston is operating. 2. In its normal position, it holds a rubber packer in an elongated position to permit passage of fluid between the packer and the tubing walls. The lower section of the free piston contains a hydraulic shock absorber which cushions the return of the tool to its

INTRODUCTION IT is well known that ferric. oxide, Fe.-,03, is paramagnetic, while magnetite, Fe304, is classed among the highly ferromagnetic substances. But magnetic data on oxides intermediate in composition between Fe-03 and Fe304 have been almost completely lacking. Fe203 and Fe304 form a solid-solution series, according to present evidence.' In this series the properties change continuously from Fe203 toward Fe304, as the percentage of FeO increases from zero toward 31.03, which is the percentage in magnetite. It is possible that there is a break in the series near Fe304, but it has not yet been possible to establish the existence-of such a break experimentally. The occurrence of solid solution ill this series is shown by the dissociation pressure, or oxygen pressure in equilibrium with the oxides, which falls continuously over the range from Fe203 to Fe304. The oxygen-pressure curves at 1,100° and 1,200° are shown in Fig. 1. The existence of solid solution is also demonstrated by the continuous change in optical properties from Fe203 over to a composition containing about 18 per cent. FeO, at which point the opacity of the oxide becomes so great that it is im-possible to obtain measurements at higher percentages of ferrous iron. Natural oxides of iron intermediate in composition between Fe2O3 and Fe304 are much more common than is generally supposed. If a mineral oxide is not strongly attracted by a small hand magnet and if it gives a red streak, it is usually labeled "hematite." If it is strongly attracted by the hand magnet it is usually labeled "magnetite" without further tests. As we shall show later, oxides containing from 1 up to 31 per cent. FeO can be thus erroneously lumped together as "magnetite." It is a fact, nevertheless, that the great hulk of natural oxides of iron lie fairly near either Fe203 Or Fe304 in composition. INTRODUCTION Economic deposits of phosphate are found at shallow depths (80 ft.) in central and northern Florida (Figure 1) where they have been mined since the late19th century(l).The present (1978) mining rate is approximately 40 million short tons per year of product (called “phosphate rock1”), which represents approximately 80% of the total U.S. production and 30% of the world production. The principal use of Florida phosphate is for the manufacture of fertilizer. There are 10 major mining companies and 20 active mines in Florida at the present time, strip mining approximately 5000 acres per year. The ore, known as "matrix," consists of gravelly clayey sands containing phosphate minerals (principally carbonate fluorapatite), quartz, and clay minerals. The clay to phosphate ratio is generally about 1:1 by weight and the sand to phosphate ratio ranges from, 1:1 to about 3:1. Mining is done by large electric draglines, which strip and cast the sandy overburden soils, generally 10 to 40 feet deep, and remove the matrix, generally 10 to 25 feet deep. Dragline bucket capacities are generally 20 to 45 cubic yards, but range up to 65 cubic yards. Mining cuts are usually 300 to 500 feet wide and up to several thousand feet long. The ore is cast into an earthen sump where high pressure water guns are used to slurrify it. Centrifugal pumps move the slurry through a pipeline to a beneficiation plant where the phosphate rock is separated from the waste sand and clays.

The Long Island Lighting Co. has operated an extensive monitoring system for over three years. Nearly 900,000 separate pieces of information have been recorded for a land area of some 600 sq miles, 15 miles north to south by 40 miles east to west. The data are composed of about a half million sulfur dioxide measurements at various locations, 290,000 of which were by the West-Gaeke method, about 160,000 pieces of weather data, and 220,000 measurements of sulfur dioxide as emitted from each of the power plant stacks on the system, all measured on an hourly basis and stored on computor cards and tapes. The computor has been programmed to collate stack emissions, weather information, and ground level sulfur dioxide measurements. The analysis shows that emissions from tall stacks do, indeed, contribute very little to ground level sulfur dioxide. For example, LILCO shows that its Northport plant contributes less than 2 ppb, hourly annual average. They also state that the plant converted to 100% natural gas or shut down, would reduce ground level sulfur dioxide by no more than 2 ppb.

Dear Sir: In conversation here with Mr. Sales, who is much interested in the work of the Committee on Mining Geology, he made a suggestion which you may be interested to hear. He, and many of us, are interested in papers along our lines of special activity, as they appear from time to time in the Institute Transactions, and often take these papers with us into the field. It appears that the work of special committees which are being formed is likely to result in a much greater number of available papers than the Institute has ever before been called upon to publish. This year's Transactions, for instance, have to be published in two volumes. Why would it not be a good plan, instead of printing heterogeneous volumes, to classify the papers into several volumes, under main headings such, for instance, as iron and steel, precious metal mining, and mining geology ? We would, in fact, be very glad to suggest this as a topic for discussion, if you think it wise, in response to the Secretary's letter of April 18. Very truly yours, J. W. FINCH.

A severely technical article, however well written, can not be an agreeable form of literature. It suffers from the defects of its qualities. One defect is a congestion of language, due to a multiplicity of adjectival nouns. The sentences are packed with words of unpleasing sound, charged with complex ideas, crowding one another so closely that the phraseology moves like an ice-pack in Bering Sea or a log-drive in a river; the undercurrent of meaning may continue to move, but the surface is obstructed. This verbal congestion is made evident by ugly compoundings, many of which are adopted by the technical writer in the mistaken belief that they give directness to his statements. For example: A unanimously approved scheme "A scheme unanimously approved " The continuous temperature record "The continuous record of temperature " To stimulate interest in synthetic plant construction "To stimulate interest in the construction of synthetic plants " In smelters reverberatory-furnace firing with powdered coal has been practised for a decade. W. O. Philbrook (Carnegie Institute of Technology, Phila.)—Mr. DeVaney's paper is a valuable addition to the growing technology of the magnetic roasting of lean iron ores. His furnace is ingeniously designed to permit close control of the process and to achieve high thermal efficiency by counter-current heat exchange and the withdrawal of both solid and gaseous products at relatively low temperatures. The principle of using a lean reducing gas to avoid over-reduction of the ore even at high operating temperatures (for rapid re-action rate) is thoroughly sound. The gas analyses and flow rates reported, however, are internally incon- sistent and render suspect any details of a heat balance based upon them. While it is entirely proper to consider the entrant gas as a reagent and to account only for the heat evolved by consuming a portion of the gas, many operators are accustomed to a heat balance using the total calorific value of the reagent supplied; and comparison of heat balances made with different bases of calculation can be quite misleading. Since Mr. DeVaney's paper is likely to be cited frequently in future discussions of magnetic roasting processes, it seems worth while to point out the internal discrepancies and to give alternate values of heat requirements for different bases of calculation.

The temperature at which th: quenched 0' (ordered bcc) phase transfo.rms to the ( (complex hexagonal) phase on heating has been examined for certain Ag-Zn and Ag-Au-Zn alloys using an electrical resistivity method. The transition temperature decreases by approxinzately 7°C as the zinc content is reduced by 1 at. pct. The critical temperature, Tc, for long-range order has also been measured for a number of Ag-Au-Zn alloys. Extrapolation to zero gold content suggests that Tc decreases by approximately 5°C per 1 at. pct reduction in zinc content. The 0 phase of the Ag-Zn system exists over a narrow range near the composition Ag zn,' Fig. 1, and has a bcc structure which is disordered above 272°C. Slow cooling to temperatures below the range 274"/258"C allows the complex hexagonal phase, r° to form.2 This is the stable structure at room temperature.3 Upon quenching 0 -phase alloys from high temperatures, it is found that the 0 — (' transformation is suppressed; but ordering takes place (i.e., 0 -0'). This ordered structure can also be obtained by the room-temperature aging of cold-worked (0.4 Deformation of the 0' phase gives rise to a fur- ther hexagonal phase ( (of nearly ideal axial ratio) which reverts to b' within a few hours.= In view of this, it has been suggested that the equilibrium struc-

One of the most important problems in underground works is the assessment of the stability of underground openings and the determination of loads on eventual supporting structures. Under certain stress conditions, a hard and sound rock around an unlined opening may show a tendency to rock bursting, which can be prevented by appropriate measures. On the other hand, a less competent rock even if it fails in a less violent manner may give rise to a rock load because within limited regions surrounding the opening, the failed material may have a tendency to flow into the opening; this condition should be prevented by designing a proper supporting structure. The stability of the opening, as well as the value of the design loads acting on the supports in the latter case, depends clearly on the shape, extent, and location of the failed regions, which are often called “plastic zones.” It has been known for some time how the plastic zones develop in some very simple cases, such as in the case of a circular opening in an elastic ideally plastic medium subjected to a nongravitational stress fie1d.l However, to the knowledge of the authors, no information has been available up to now about the extent of the plastic zones in a more general case and for rocklike media. ASSUMPTIONS ON ROCK BEHAVIOR MADE IN THE CALCULATION The solution shown in this chapter is valid for a horizontal tunnel of circular cross section driven through a rock medium at a finite depth.

This paper deals with the calculation of the composition of the infinitesimal trace of alloy that transfers from the liquid to the solid state at each temperature during the equilibrium solidification of a binary solid solution, and which thereby enables the compositions of the coexisting liquid and solid phases to follow along the liquidus and solidus lines respectively during the cooling. A general expressioll for the composition (6) of the liquid-to-solid transfer at each temperature has been derived: , = Zlxl{xl - P) + ZsXsiP - xs) [I] Zl(xl -P)+ Zs{P - xs) where ZL and Zs are the slopes of the liquidus and solidus lines at the given temperature, xl and xs are the compositions of the stable liquid and solid phases at the same temperature, and P is the composition of the alloy under consideration. The d equation is valid for the process of equilibrium heating as well as cooling, and may be applied to vapor-to-liquid, vapor-to-solid, liquid-to-liquid, and solid-to-solid transfers if the corresponding equilibrium diagrams are known. The d-versus-temperature curves for two alloys P1 and P2 are shown in Fig. I. In each case, the liquid-to-solid transfer has the same composition as the stable solid phase only at the temperature of the beginning of solidification, and has the same composition as the stable liquid phase only at the temperature of the completion of solidification. At each intermediate temperature, the composition of the liquid-to-solid transfer differs by a finite amount from those of the two coexisting phases. Therefore, during equilibrium cooling. the transfers must merge into the solid phase from the liquid without forming a transition phase; otherwise the condition of equilibrium would be violated. AGING is a term that connotes a slow change in properties under ordinary operating conditions. It can be accelerated by increasing the temperature and by mechanical straining. The magnetic properties of iron and some of its alloys have for many years been known to be subject to such a change. But the cause of the change was not recognized until a few years ago after mechanical age-hardening in nonferrous alloys of the "duralumin" type had been definitely shown, by means of solid solubility curves, changes in electrical resistance and microanalysis, to be caused by slow precipitation of one or more constituents from the solid solution. The similarity between the solid solubility curves of such alloys (Fig. 1) and those for iron-nitrogen (Fig. 2) and iron-carbon alloys (Fig. 3) below the Al transformation point suggested at once that magnetic aging of iron might be caused by a similar process; namely, by the slow precipitation of carbon and nitrogen in the form of Fe4N and Fe3C at ordinary temperatures because of a cooling rate that had been too rapid to permit complete precipitation according to equilibrium conditions. This suggestion has since been amply confirmed, particularly by the comprehensive work of Köster1 on the effect of nitrogen and carbon. Typical curves are shown in Fig. 4 for the relationship between aging temperature and coercive force. Previous to the establishment of the precipitation-hardening theory it was thought that the effect of nonmetallic elements like C, N, 0, etc., on the magnetic properties of iron was greatest when these elements were retained in solid solution, atomically dispersed throughout the interstitial spaces of the iron lattice2.

AT THE beginning of October, the outstanding feature in the world's affairs was the Turkish question. The Turks, victorious over the Greeks, repudiated the treaty of Sévres with the Allies and demanded their reestablishment at Con-stantinople and in Thrace. The British resisted, but deserted by the French and Italians, at a military conference at Mudania the Turks obtained about everything that they wanted. Great Britain suffered a loss of prestige that may bear evil fruit in the future. The possession of the Dardanelles by the Turks pro-duced the ruin of Russia and Rumania in the great war, prolonged it two years and made it necessary for America to go in. Disruption of the entente puts the Turks back where they were. In America a strong and spontaneous reaction developed against this, not for any diplomatic reasons, but purely out of the sentiment that the atrocious Turks should be confined to Anatolia. Some strong leadership would have aligned the United States with Great Britain in this matter. As it is, the French have had their way but have alienated much of their American friendship. The temporary composition of Turkish affairs at the Mudania conference had momentous consequences. The Greeks, having expelled King Constantine, in their distress and despair reverted to the guidance of Venizelos. Evacuation of the Grecian military forces and the entire Grecian population from Eastern Thrace began, the people not venturing to remain there. From all accounts their withdrawal, attended by great hardships, was reminiscent of folk movements in the Middle Ages. The vanguard of the Angora Govern-ment set foot in Constantinople, marking the return of the Turks to Europe, while the Allied forces remain-ing there temporarily stood in chagrin. In Great Britain an important element of the Con-servatives withdrew their support from the Coalition Government, thus leading to the resignation of Lloyd George, the installation of Andrew Bonar Law as premier and a general election with a tri-party contest among the Conservatives, Liberals and Labor, called for Nov. 15. Civil war continued in Ireland, but attention was diverted from it by the more important events in the Near East.

Applied geophysics is the youngest child of that old branch of learning that has been known from Aristotle's time as physics—the constitution and laws of nature. The mother science, with the help of mathematics, has given birth to many children, who, on becoming of age in the scientific sense, wedded more practical applications which later became known as electrical engineering, physical chemistry and acoustical engineering. Some vigorous sons still retain the family name, among which the most recent to take its place as a division of science is geophysics, which deals with the physics of the earth. Geophysics in its broad sense has many departments—meteorology, oceanography and seismology, to mention only three. Within the past 20 years, however, a special interest has arisen in the application of physical principles to problems in geology, mining and civil engineering, with the consequent rapid growth of what has now been called "applied geophysics." Applied geophysics in this narrower sense is the application of experimental and theoretical physics to determine variations and discontinuities in underground structures that cannot be ascertained from surface inspection. It seems evident, then, that the physics department is the natural place in a university where the principles and methods involved should be taught and developed, for the physicist will also have had the requisite training in mathematics that the proper understanding of many methods now used will require. A knowledge of the procedure and principles, however, is not sufficient for the successful application of geophysical methods. One may know the dynamics of flight of golf balls and of impact and yet not play a par game of golf! The proper selection and use of the right club to suit the circumstances of the lay of the ball and an acquaintance with the possibilities and limitations of the strokes as well as the practical execution of the play is essential to a successful game. So, also, in the application of geophysical methods, it is important for the geophysicist to use the best device under the conditions presented, to know the limitations of the conclusions deduced from his physical measurements and to make the proper interpretation of the results. A knowledge of geology will be of great aid in coming to the correct con-
