A vein may be defined as an aggregation of mineral matter, more or less tabular or lenticular in form, which was deposited from solution and is of later origin than the inclosing rock. This definition differs from the one found in many text-books in that no assumption is made as to the origin of the space occupied by the vein or the manner in which the mineral matter was deposited. In the present paper the writer purposes to discuss the mechanics of vein formation, and does not wish to begin by begging the question. The origin of ore deposits has been diligently investigated in recent years, but, while much has been written concerning the chemistry of the process, the physical side of the question has received less attention. The source of the ore minerals; the chemical composition of ore-bearing solutions; the relative importance of magmatic and meteoric waters as agents of concentration; and the causes of mineral precipitation have all been discussed at length. On the other hand, little has been written concerning the mechanics of vein formation, and the theories given in text-books today are essentially the same as those developed by the early Cornish and Saxon miners. Early investigators often regarded both veins and dikes as igneous in origin, but today the theory that vein minerals have been deposited from solutions, either liquid or gaseous, is firmly established. The latter view is supported by the fact that many vein-forming minerals are not found in unaltered igneous rocks; by evidence obtained in the laboratory regarding the solubility of minerals; by the presence of many ore minerals in hot-spring waters; by the occurrence of some veins in regions consisting exclusively of unaltered sedimentary rocks; by evidence as to the temperature at which some minerals are formed; and by the absence of mineral segregation due to difference in specific gravity. There is still, however, much difference of opinion as to whether certain tabular-shaped masses should be classed as veins or as dikes. Some of the earlier investigators have also advocated the theory that veins are contemporaneous in origin with the inclosing rock, while others have believed the vein minerals to represent a recrystallization or transforma-

IN 1950 Kaiser Steel Corp. acquired control of the Utah Fuel Co., a pioneer Utah coal concern owning large reserves of high volatile coking coal near Sunnyside, Utah, and large reserves of coal elsewhere in Utah and Colorado. Kaiser Steel later disposed of the noncoking quality reserves included in the property and over the past six years has developed a group of three fully modernized mines and a central preparation plant at Sunnyside. This plant is geared to furnish 1.6 million tons per year of low ash coking coal to the byproduct coke ovens at its steel plant at Fontana, Calif., and to its beehive oven coking plant at Sunnyside. General Problems: Topographic and physical conditions under which Utah coals are found differ from those in most bituminous coal districts of the eastern and central states. Utah coal seams lie under deeper cover, generally at steeper pitches; consider- able distances are burned along the outcrop and back from the surface of the outcrop. Usually the coal seams lie high up on escarpments, accessible only through deep narrow canyons or long rock tunnels and tramways. The topography at Sunnyside is particularly rough, with great changes in cover over the coal in relatively short horizontal distances. This is due to the cliff-making sandstones of the cretaceous Mesa Verde group, the coal-bearing measures being in the Blackhawk formation. The thick massive Castle Gate sandstone of the Prince River formation overlies the coal-bearing rocks and is suspected to be the chief cause of roof control problems.

MUCH insight has been gained into the nature of the cold-worked state of metals in recent years through the use of modern X-ray techniques. These methods have revealed the existence of stacking faults together with regions of high internal strain and have provided means of measuring the atomic perturbations in plastically deformed metals. In view of the recent increased interest in the solid state, it is desirable to extend these techniques to the study of lattice imperfections introduced into semiconductors during plastic deformation. It is of particular interest to compare the state of imperfection sustained by metallic bonding with that sustained by the covalent bonding found in semiconductors. A knowledge of the imperfections which can exist in semiconductors is important from both a theoretical and a practical point of view since they can greatly influence many of the physical properties. In order to determine the possible existence of stacking faults in covalently bonded structures, precise measurements were made of the diffracted peak positions of plastically deformed germanium, gallium antimonide, and indium antimonide. These measurements were based on the theoretical treatment of Paterson1 and are similar to those employed by Warren and warekois2 in their studies of deformed a brass. In addition, diffraction peak profiles were measured on the annealed and plastically deformed materials in order to obtain information concerning the distribution of internal strains through the use of the Fourier methods developed by Warren and Averbach.3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND TECHNIQUES Because of the room-temperature brittleness of the semiconductors studied, it was necessary to plastically deform the materials at elevated temperatures. The brittle-ductile transition temperature ranges of GaSb and InSb are sufficiently low to permit hot-filing operations. Resume.-The district of Santa Eulalia lies 12 miles to the southeast of the city of Chihuahua, Mexico. The ore deposits occur in a Cretaceous limestone of unknown thickness, overlain by a series of rhyolitic tuffs and flows. The limestone is very gently folded and is cut by several systems of fissures, of which only those with a general north-south strike are pre¬mineral and control the deposition. The deposits are of two main types; the earlier silver-bearing iron sulphide types occurs as high-grade tabular bodies resembling veins and as large masses of relatively low-grade ore. The gangue of this type is composed of lime-iron silicates that point toward a close association with an igneous rock mass which has not yet been encountered. In the later silver-lead-zinc type the ore occurs in vertical chimneys and horizontal mantas, principally as oxides, though at a depth of 1,500 ft. some sulphides have been encountered. During oxidation the ore chambers have increased in size owing to the solution of the walls by the sulphuric acid generated in the process, and a substitution has taken place of nearly one-half part by weight of the original constituents of the ore, by newly introduced elements and radicals. Both types are believed to have come from greater depths than those yet reached by mining, and their ultimate source, from a consideration of similar deposits, is believed to be an igneous rock in contact with the limestone at some horizon below. The deposits are believed to have been formed at unusually great depths, as indicated by the proved great vertical range of the silicate minerals coupled with the absence of the igneous rock, and by the practically unchanged character of the silver-lead-zinc ores as far as developed. The volcanic capping is believed to be distinctly later than the economically important ore deposition.

A GREAT landslide occurred on June 23, 1925, in the valley of Gros Ventre River, about 35 miles south of Yellowstone National Park (Fig. 1). The relations of the north-easterly dipping rock formations of the slide scarp and of the dam formed by the slide are shown in the diagrammatic cross-section of the valley (Fig. 2). This generalized section is based on unpublished maps and notes by Eliot Blackwelder, in the files of the U. S. Geological Survey. RECENT investigations of the molybdenum-carbon alloys have been reported by Becker and Ebert1,? Westgren and Phragmén2, T. Takei3, and H. Tutiya4. Takei3 studied the Mo-C system by employing metal-lographic and X-ray methods, and the other publications described the determination of the crystal structure of the molybdenum carbides. In exploring this system by a technique previously applied to the tungsten-carbon series5, the results of Takei were confirmed with two definite exceptions; i.e., first the composition of the eutectic, and second the nature of the carbon-rich intermediate phase. Consequently, a more thorough examination of the molybdenum-carbon constitution was initiated in an effort to correlate the data supplied by the microstructures, diffraction patterns and chemical analyses.

This investigation was concerned with the aluminum-oxide particle dispersions, the mechanical properties, and the re-c,uystallization characteristics of some internally oxidized copper-aluminum alloys. Obserued hardness vaviations are in agreement with variations in oxide particle size revealed by electron metallographic studies. The increase in yield strength caused by internal oxidation is quite sensitive to matrix grain size and is accompanied by a loss of ductility, particularly at higher temperatures. Elevated temperature ductility is con-side,vably improved if major grain reorientation is accomplished by ve recrystallization prior to testing. The oxide particles offer a considerable restraint to softening during annealing after cold deformation. THE diffusion of oxygen under appropriate conditions into a suitable alloy causes solute oxide particles to be precipitated at an inward moving interface.1,2 Previous work has shown that the hardness

I. Description of the Clinton Ores and Associated Rocks. The Clinton rocks in Stone valley comprise (1) thick layers of deep-red shale, (2) layers of reddish-gray shale interspersed with beds of sandstone and thin beds of extremely fossiliferous limestone, and (3) yellowish-gray shales alternating with thin layers of olive-colored shales. These layers of shale are all very thin and are at no point massive.' A bed of gray-white sandstone varying in thickness from 12 to 30 ft. occurs in the upper portions of the Clinton shales. This is called the ore sandstone, a name given to it by Rogers and adopted also by the Second Pennsylvania Geological Survey. It is the surest guide to the presence of the iron-ore bed, which lies below its lower edges at distances varying from 10 to 20 ft. This ore sandstone, in the valley, lies generally at very low inclinations, but often is locally subjected to considerable changes in dip. At its outcrop this ore sandstone weathers very easily and yields a rather sparse crop of stone, composed of dirty, iron-stained boulders. Upon the roads these boulders are quite well rounded, and bear fragments of crinoid stems and other fossil forms. The ore sandstone exhibits at many points evidences of former movements in this very great thickness of the shales, and as it is the only stratum in this series competent to transmit and record stresses due to structural movements, its evidence is of considerable importance in determining the occurrence of movements in times past.

Since the presentation, by the writer, of the initial paper on the embrittlement of copper,1 the subject has been investigated further along two separate lines. The first series of investigations involves the "double-deoxidized" coppers, while the second series is devoted to single deoxidizers other than those used in the investigations reported upon last year. The object of these experiments is to develop a type of copper that will show the minimum of detrimental effects after having been exposed to alternate oxidation and reduction. The fabrication of this material necessitates the use of alternate oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, at temperatures ranging up to 900" C. Following this treatment it is essential that the soundness and strength of the copper be unimpaired, even in sections of only a few thousandths of an inch in thickness. Materials The ensuing report embodies three separate groups of materials, which may be classified as follows: 1. Double-deoxidized copper using silicon and calcium boride. 2. Copper deoxidized with calcium. 3. Double-deoxidized copper using constant calcium content (0.075 per cent) plus silicon, or calcium boride. Last year, T. S. Fuller, of the General Electric Research Laboratory, suggested that if a properly deoxidized copper had sufficient deoxidizer residual in the material, this excess material might increase the resistance of the copper to the oxidation reduction cycle. In consequence of this suggestion, two small lots of "double-deoxidized" copper were prepared. The first, lot A, was made by adding 0.03 per cent silicon as the deoxidizer, following this by an addition of 0.55 per cent calcium boride immediately before pouring. The second, lot B, contained the same ingredients, but these were added in the reverse manner. Inasmuch as these lots were tested separately from the materials about to be described, it must be borne in mind that the materials cannot be grouped together, and are not directly comparable.

INTRODUCTION - SCOPE OF DISCUSSION There has hitherto been no systematic effort to make public the available information on petroleum in South America and the object of this paper, therefore, is to broadly discuss the subject as it pertains to South America as a whole, endeavoring to collect in readable form what is known regarding individual fields. This article is not intended to exhaustively discuss individual fields, or to solve the many complicated problems regarding petroleum and natural. gas in the various republics, since those necessitate years of study and work by petroleum geologists, engineers, financiers, and drillers. Neither. can the reader expect absolute accuracy in all statements, since this is impossible at the present time. The writer has, of course, attempted to be correct in all cases, but in a review involving so many countries and extending over so many, phases of the subject, it is to be expected that some errors will have crept in.

BLUE HEAT PHENOMENA IN constructing a theory of the flow and hardening of metals, we necessarily make use of such phenomena as seem to be, universally observed in metals. It is, therefore, a matter of. concern to the constructors of such mnemonic systems if one or two of the group classified as metals show anomalous behavior. Such egregious phenomena are observed in pure or nearly-pure iron in the reaction of its mechanical properties to low-temperature annealing after cold work and to increased temperature of testing. In short it has been generally observed that iron," as an outstanding exception among metals, increases its hardness and strength by low-temperature annealing. after cold work,1 and also by increase of testing temperature to the range of 150° to 300° C. The investigation here recorded was made then with the object of ascertaining if similar phenomena were observed in high purity iron and, if not, to the presence of which impurities these phenomena could be traced.
