California’s Monterey Peninsula, noted for its beaches, resort hotels, and beautiful homes, also harbors a pioneering beneficiation operation. Here for more than 35 years the Del Monte Properties Co. has provided sand products from large dunes, some over 300 ft high, located in the Del Monte Forest. Raw material-the dunes derived by wave action from Santa Lucia granite of Jurassic age-has unusually consistent chemical and physical composition. Coarse crystalline feldspar is the principal constituent, followed in abundance by quartz, with some biotite, ilmenite, garnet, zircon, and monazite.

Various microorganisms and their role in bacterial leaching are described. Bacterial leaching as applied to copper, uranium, zinc, lead, and coal is discussed.

Measurement has been made of the organic sulfur concentration in coal macerals using microanalytical techniques in the transmission electron microscope. This technique utilizes measurements of x-rays emitted by the sulfur atoms embedded in the hydrocarbon constituents and the bremsstrahlung x-rays generated in the matrix. It is a simple technique for thin specimens and yields reliable results. Although it can be used to measure the average organic sulfur content of coal, it is most useful in determining organic sulfur in extremely small volumes of material. Variations in organic sulfur content can be measured at a scale unimagined earlier. This TEM technique also has application for determination of organic chlorine, phosphorous, potassium and other elements often found distributed through the hydrocarbon constituent of fuels.

The need for mechanized drilling to decrease mining costs has resulted in the development of the jumbo from column-and-bar drill by carriages to hydraulically controlled jib jumbos. Resultant savings from use of improved jumbos have been high enough usually to retire the machinery investment within a year. The jib jumbo unit has been and applied successfully to development and preparation programs and flat-bedded stopes, and an even wider field is forecast for its use.

The availability of a thorough, simple-to-use roof fall classification system is desirable for several reasons. First, such a system would expedite the reporting of falls for the purposes of estimating material removal costs, analyzing damage levels, and complying with federal regulations to report falls in certain areas of the mine. At the Troy meeting of the Institute, in October, 1883, I presented a paper entitled "Smelting Notes from Chihuahua, Mexico,"" in which was briefly described a cupellation-hearth, commonly met with in the northern part of Mexico, called in the vernacular un vaso. Experimental statistical designs were used at Zortman Mining Company's, Zortman, Montana, heap-leach operation to establish functional relationships between key operating parameters and gold/silver recoveries. Zinc feed rate, lead feed rate, and vacuum (CFM/gpm) account for 64% and 67% of the attainable gold and silver recoveries, respectively. Surface response graphs of the resulting polynomials were plotted. These graphs were used to optimize Zortman's Merrill-Crowe precipitation process.

The Government has for disposal a large stock of horse-drawn vehicles that were produced during the war to transport and handle all kinds of army supplies. These vehicles consist of escort wagons, also the axles and wheels; ambulances, model 1909; sprinkler, wagons, buckboards, combat wagons, hand carts, water carts, ration carts, and medical carts. These vehicles are adapted to numerous commercial purposes. All were produced under the strictest Government rules, specifications, and supervision and are first class in every way.

Banner Mining Co. became interested in this Tucson area early in 1950, and after several months of reconnaissance work, a lease-option purchase agreement was concluded on the Mineral Hill property which allowed time for considerable exploration and development work. Unwatering of the mine began in August 1951 after electric power lines were extended from nearby Tucson. The unwatering and rehabilitation work was done under a Defense Minerals Exploration Administration project and was completed in December 1952 after about 15 months of tedious work. The mine had been under water for more than 30 years with resulting cave-ins and timber deterioration. In some badly caved areas spiling was necessary to reopen the old drifts and crosscuts.

Borehole information is often the only source of information on rock conditions at depth during the stage of feasibility studies of a project, and from this data the rock mechanics engineer would like to make some quantitative estimates of rock mass cohesive strength. While judgement and experience will usually play a paramount role at this stage, simple tools for estimating rock mass cohesive strength would be an asset. In this paper, an approximate technique is suggested for assessing the cohesive strength of a randomly jointed rock mass from borehole data on fracture intensity and intact rock strength.

The following notes on the cheap milling of a soft lowgrade ore-body in the State of Chiapas, Mexico, may be of interest. The ore-body in question was worked, not by itself, but incidentally in connection with a large extraction of concentrating-ore; and one 10-stamp battery of a 30-stamp mill used for re-crushing tailings, and provided with copper-plates, was set aside for the treatment of this particular ore, of which, during a period of 17 months, 10,274 tons, of 2240 lbs. each, were handled. The 1970's have been considered a pivotal decade for the mineral industries. Undergraduate mineral engineering education is relevant to this theme; in particular, there are three interrelated problems: 1) The goals, and therefore the course requirements, of the under- graduate curricula are in question; 2) The unit costs of undergraduate education appear excessive to those who bear the charges; and 3) The present social ambience detrimentally affects the work attitudes and career motivation of both prospective and in-course students. Any discussion of these problems must bottom upon recognized national needs for minerals and a technologically sound minerals industry staffed by competent engineers, particularly at the exploration, development and production levels. Fortunately, these needs have been recognized and to some extent quantified, and they are even now under further intensive study by some of the most competent members of society and the profession.

The objective of this investigation of the Cendrex was to determine the applicability of the X-ray instrument for the measurement of the ash content of coal. Developed by the Dutch State Mines, this instrument is designed to provide ash analysis of any desired coal product with only a 5-minute lag between sample collection and analytical result. The unit could, with limit controls, be used to feed back signals to preset the separating gravity of coal washers, control the ratio of various coals needed to produce an acceptable blend, and permit the sorting of a washed product into two qualities, one which is below and the other which is above a prescribed ash content. This unit can also be used discontinuously for rapid determination of samples of coals taken in the usual manner.

The ultimate goal in rock mechanics is to make quantitative predictions of the response of rock to changes. Measured and calculated values of changes in displacements or temperatures in the rock for six different field experiments are compared using linear regression. When values of the mean compressive stresses are large compared with the values of the deviatorial stresses, linear elasticity, using values for Young's modulus from laboratory tests, provides a good predictive model. However, if the values of the mean compressive stresses are small compared with those of the deviatorial stresses the behavior and response of the rock, though systematic, is not linear. Linear heat conduction provides good predictions of changes in rock temperatures but thermal displacements are not predicted well by linear thermoelasticity.

The design and analysis of a circular, domed powerhouse for Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) Company's Kerckhoff 2 Project is described. Exploration, geologic stress determinations, mechanical properties, reinforcement and instrumentation are addressed briefly. The analyses of the circular, domed cavern and the comparison of predicted and field deformations are presented in somewhat more detail. The behavior of the completed powerhouse cavern has been found to be substantially as predicted by the analysis.

A grain model for gas-solid reactions in cylindrical pellets is formulated and solved numerically. The numerical solution demonstrates when it is safe to assume either a thin disk or a long cylinder geometry, and when the more general two dimensional geometry must be used. The numerical solution also demonstrates the solution of a two-dimensional moving boundary problem (i.e., when the reaction is diffusion controlled and the ratio of the height to diameter dictates two dimensions).

At the Beckley mine in southern West Virginia, forecasting unstable roof conditions in advance of mining is accomplished by wing a rating system that combines historical information on mine roof failures with known mine geology. Failure frequency rates are derived for each category of roof rock composition, unit thickness, structure, and extraction ratio. In this manner, known geological environments are rated according to instability based on actual experience. Drill hole control and geological interpretation provide the basis for forecasting unstable conditions beyond working faces. The forecasting technique has assisted mine management in reducing fall frequencies by 80% over the past two years compared to the first five years of operation. This reduction in fall frequency was accomplished by modifying the plan of advancing sections to minimize mining exposure to unstable roof conditions.
