In " The Genesis of Certain Auriferous Lodes "* Dr. Don makes a reference to a curious vein-formation known as the "Indicator," which characterizes a portion of the Ballarat mining district,, in Victoria, Australia. During 1890 and again in 1898 I had an opportunity of making a few notes, which, although somewhat belated,t may be worth adding to the observations recorded in the Transactions of the Institute. The country of the Ballarat gold-field consists of the Lower Silurian slates and sandstones, which also enclose the reefs of Bendigo; but it is noteworthy that the successive anticlinal folds, and accompanying saddles of quartz, which distinguish Bendigo are not characteristic of Ballarat, the geological structure of which presents greater complexity. That part of the district known as Ballarat East became famous early in its history on account of the large nuggets which were found in the alluvium, and subsequently it became further known because of a peculiar persistent black seam, traversing the bed-rock underlying the alluvial deposits, which was found to be associated with rich bunches of gold-ore, not only in the gravel that capped it at the surface but also in the quartz-veins which crossed it underground. The name of " Indicator " was early given. In 1871 Mr. Morgan Llewellyn directed attention to it as influencing the distribution of the gold. In the government quarterly report for December, 1888,

THE compiler, or author, of the Probierbücblein is not known, and the date of its first printing is uncertain. It was obviously not written by an assayer who wished to give a coherent description of his craft for the instruction of others; this was left for Biringuccio first to do. It is easy to believe that originally the Probierbücblein was a random collection from various sources of information useful to an assayer, probably gathered by one of the profession for his own use. It must remain a matter of speculation whether this was shown to a printer, who recognized the opportunity to turn an honest penny and made an inept attempt to give the manuscript the appearance of a coherent account by writing a preface and arranging the various items in somewhat logical sequence, or whether the assayer him- self started this job and was prevented from finishing it. That some sections of the book, especially near the be ginning, present an almost continuous story, while others are chaotic in their arrangement; that several paragraphs are printed more than once in different places; that there are paragraph headings, for which the text was never written, or lost, followed by irrelevant information-all this seems evidence of a job unfinished and points to a publisher's offering for the public's quick money. The demand must have been brisk, for metal working was a profitable profession, and the jeweler who was working with metals but did not care to become completely trained in assay methods would jump at the chance of acquiring easy knowledge. Even the great Agricola has whole sections obviously plagiarized from the Probierbücblein. Neither Biringuccio nor Ercker shows any direct influence, though they and all subsequent metallurgists will in some degree be affected by

International interest in storage and retrieval of geological data stems from a desire to tap this large and potentially valuable, but little-used resource. The data will be used primarily for development and testing of geological concepts and theory; secondarily as a basis for assessing mineral potential and even individual mineral deposits; thirdly for establishment of world-wide norms averages and standards; and fourthly as a search tool leading to sources of specific data and to repositories of specimens etc. International committee activities are designed to establish acceptable general standards for reference numbering, geographic location, geological terminology, coding etc. ; and to develop progressively the types of data (parameters) that should be recorded in specialized archival files in such fields of world-wide interest as palaeontology, mineral deposits, petrochemistry, stratigraphy, mineralogy, palaeomagnetism, physical geochronology etc. Establishment of world data banks analogous to those in oceanography may come later; for the present we hope to achieve some degree of agreed consistency in national and local data banks throughout the world, and to establish an international index to these banks as first steps in facilitating international exchange. For purposes of this paper, data are defined as facts, reproducibly measured or objectively described.

This paper describes the observed variability of the chemical composition of coal preparation plant refuse for the major producing seams of Kentucky. Both the Appalachian Coal Field of eastern Kentucky and the Eastern Interior Coal Field of western Kentucky are represented. Also reported is the variability observed in the chemistry of the coal refuse due to cleaning, and the observed chemical variations between past and present production samples. This represents part of a larger study directed toward characterization and utilization of Kentucky coal refuse.

QUOTING from Dr. Richard T. Ely:1 "Conservation, narrowly and strictly considered, means the preservation in unimpaired efficiency of the resources of the earth; or in a condition so nearly unimpaired as the nature of the case, or Wise exhaustion, admits. And broadly considered, it means more than the word itself implies, for it naturally includes an examination of methods Whereby the natural inheritance of the human race may be improved; and still more broadly considered, and as used in popular discussion, it includes a treatment of the effects of productive conservation methods upon distribution. "Conservation means a sacrifice of the present generation to the future generations Whenever it is carried too far. There is a sharp limit to the economic sacrifice that we may reasonably ask the private person to make for even the present Welfare, and the limit is still sharper when we come to consider the interests of future generations." In a paper on the iron ores of America, presented to the Pan-American Scientific Congress at Washington, I have emphasized the fact that the reserves of iron ores in the two Americas are enormously in excess of the requirements of the present generation, in fact, so large that no shortage is to be anticipated for many generations in the future; that a large part of the value of iron ores is put into them by man's efforts to make them available. This fact is fundamental for the intelligent consideration of- policies of conservation as applied to iron ore. As I interpret it, this fact makes it practically unnecessary that the present generation should make any especial sacrifice for future generations in the way of conservation of its iron-ore resources. Even if we were disposed to look forward to a period of 100 or 200 years, with a view to insuring the welfare of the people living at that time, it is doubtful whether any procedure we could now formulate would materially help them in the matter of iron ores, so large are the reserves available. In order that an appeal for conservation may be effective it must obviously favor the welfare of the present or immediately following generations; it must promise benefits to general and individual welfare during a period within the range of comprehension of the average man.

The aim of this paper is to disclose some of the correlations between rock parameters, hidden in Wuerker's "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rocks," 1956. The empirical relations concern dry rocks of varying porosity. Curves and equations interrelating the specific gravity, compressive strength, bar velocity, and Poisson's ratio are presented. In 1956 Wuerker published his "Annotated Tables of Strength and Elastic Properties of Rock", in which various physical properties of rocks determined by different authorities, are tabulated systematically. The tables are primarily intended for use by mining-, quarrying- and ore-dressing engineers. Since the list of measured parameters for each type of rock includes properties such as — grain size, specific gravity, porosity, compressive strength, static elastic cons:ants (moduli of elasticity, rigidity, specific damping capacity and longitudinal bar velocity) the tables are also of considerable interest to the practical geophysicist. Correlations between rock parameters may enable geophysicists, geologists and civil engineers to transiate measurements from one parameter to another. Even if these translations are of limited accuracy, or valid only within certain specified ranges, they often serve a useful parpose. The aim of this paper is to disclose some of the correlations between rock parameters concealed in wuerker's Tables. Throughout this paper the following symbols and units are used unless otherwise stated: Sg is Specific gravity, the ratio of the density of a specimen to the density of water at 4°C. P is Porosity, in %, the ratio of the volume of voids in a specimen to its total volume. CS is Compressive strength in 1000 p.s.i., the stress under which a specimen will fracture when undergoing a standard compression test. V is Bar Velocity in kilo-feet/sec, the velocity of longitudinal seismic waves measured in a slender bar type specimen. Vc is Bulk or Constraint Velocity in kilo-feet/ sec, the velocity of longitudinal seismic waves measured in a very large specimen.+is Reciprocai bar velocity in millisecs/ft (1 millisec = 10-3 sec). cis Poisson's ratio, the ratio of the lateral to longitudinal strain of a body under longitudinal stress. Introduction Grinding circuits are used to reduce the particle size of ores to the size desired for beneficiation or to grind a concentrate to a size required for final marketing. Grinding and classification can be carried out using either wet or dry circuits. Most sulfide ores are ground in wet circuits using one or more stages of grinding to obtain the necessary mineral liberation to produce a final concentrate which will meet the desired criteria. Iron ores are ground in circuits applicable to the particular ore using either wet or dry grinding. Nonmetallic minerals frequently present different requirements. Barite is likely to be subjected to wet grinding before beneficiating the ore; the concentrate is dried and then dry ground to meet market particle size requirements. The one thing that most mill operators will agree to is that there is no such thing as the "best" configuration of equipment for grinding. The circuit which works well on one ore may be totally unsatisfactory for another ore body. The general trend in the industry is flow sheet simplication with fewer parallel circuits instead of multiple-line circuits using small mills. This change in philosophy has been brought about by the saving of both capital and operating costs that may be possible with larger equipment. Remember that comminution is basically a very inefficient process, and that the costs can range upwards to 50% of the total milling costs. It, therefore, behooves the mill operator to carefully design his grinding and classification circuits. He must ascertain the optimal economic particle size for beneficiation and then make certain he has achieved the best balance between capital and operating costs to achieve the desired mesh of grind. Equipment Grinding circuits consist of one or more pieces of equipment to grind the solids. Generally, these circuits include one or more grinding mills, classification equipment, and the necessary materials handling equipment such as pumps, pipelines, and conveyors. There are many different types of equipment available which are used to grind and classify ores and minerals. Following is a tabulation of most of the equipment used for wet and/or dry grinding.

Recent legislation and the heightened environmental awareness of the public have brought about constraints in the location, process selection and operation of the modern electrolytic refinery. The modern electrolytic zinc process incorporating pyro, hydro, and electrometallurgy has emissions, effluents and residues which are acceptable only under severely restricted discharge conditions. Due to the necessity of maximizing zinc recovery, the additional cost of the environmental equipment has to be minimized, which may be achieved by intelligent process and location selection as well as by proper operation of the plant for maximum return to the Owner and minimum damage to the environment.

THE ceramic industry has to do with forming or molding articles of clay, and imparting to them their characteristic properties of permanence, strength and color by subjecting them to heat treatment in kilns. This heat treatment is commonly known as "firing" or "burning." The art of firing clay ware antedates the industrial use of coal; hence wood was the fuel first used, and the earliest kilns were built to burn wood. The majority of the clay ware produced today is fired in periodic kilns that are essentially enlarged structures similar to the earliest enclosed kilns; a kiln consists of a large chamber 16 to 32 ft. dia. (or rectangular) in which the ware is charged and fired either in direct contact with flame or hot gases from the fuel, or in saggers which shield the ware from direct contact with the gases. The fuel is burned in a number of small furnaces built in the thick .wall that encloses the chamber; these furnaces are from 16 to 36 in. wide and from 3 to 5 ft. long; some of them have horizontal or sloping grates, but many have no, grates; the last are called "dead-bottom" furnaces. The temperature necessary to mature the charge in the kiln varies for different clays; for some it is as low as 1800°, and for others as high as 2700° F. Wood was an ideal fuel for the low temperatures that were used in early kilns; it burns freely and produces along, clean flame, which promotes uniform distribution of the heat in the kiln; it does not coke and so restrict the passage of air through the fuel bed; the ash does not melt in the fuel bed to form clinker; and the ash that is carried into the chamber and deposited on the charge does not contain iron and sulfur to discolor the clay. The extent of the ceramic industry now precludes the general use of wood in kilns, so that today this industry is one of the large users -of bituminous coal, burning more than eight million tons annually in kilns. Manufacturing plants usually are at or near the source of clay, with deposits of coal suitable for kilns occurring near the clay. The cost of coal is the largest single item of expense in the manufacture of clay ware, and, because all coals are not equally suitable for the process, the careful selection of coal is important. Experimental production of Al-Si alloys, containing from 33 to 55 pct Al, by direct reduction of aluminum silicates in a three-phase arc furnace is described. Advantages of a smelting technique utilizing hogged wood waste as part of the reductant and for temperature control are discussed. WORK on the problem of producing aluminum by smelting has been in progress since the middle of the eighteenth century. Early work met with little success and in 1782 Lavoisier, an eminent French chemist, expressed the belief that alumina could not be reduced by carbon. It was almost a century later when the Cowles brothers developed a process for the production of aluminum alloys by reducing alumina coincident with the reduction of other metal oxides. In practice, the other metal oxide was usually copper. In 1907 it was first shown that alumina alone could be reduced by carbon at a temperature of 2200°C. The metal produced was volatilized and lost or recombined with the oxides of carbon formed in the reaction.' For a number of years after the Cowles brothers abandoned production of Cu-A1 alloys because their product was not commercially competitive with the aluminum produced by the Hall process, there was little interest in thermal reduction processes. After World War I interest in such processes was renewed and a number of patents were issued on processes for the production of A1-Si alloys.' , "he function of the silicon in these processes was the same as the function of the copper in the Cowles brothers process, namely, to prevent the reduced aluminum from recombining with the oxides of carbon and to promote absorption of the aluminum vapors set free at the high temperature required for the reduction reaction. The advantage of using silicon in place of copper for this function is that silicon has a higher boiling point (2600"C) than copper (2310"C) and its oxides, combined with aluminum oxides, occur in nature in almost unlimited quantities. No A1-Si alloys have been produced commercially in the United States, as far as is known. However, considerable experimental smelting of aluminum silicate materials has been done by the TVA at Wilson Dam, Ala.' FLUORSPAR is a nonmetallic mineral aggregate or mass containing a sufficient quantity of fluorite (CaF2) to be of commercial interest. It has only moderate value per unit of weight and its cost as a percentage of the cost of finished consumer products is nearly negligible. Nevertheless, it has wide and great industrial importance. In periods of national emergency it is a mineral without which many very necessary manufacturing processes would be greatly handicapped; a few could not exist. Fluorite contains 51.1 pct calcium and 48.9 pct fluorine. Industrial grades of fluorspar prepared for the consumer normally contain from 85 to 98 pct fluorite, depending on the use. The ores may contain as little as 30 pct fluorite, depending on many factors such as accessibility to transportation and markets, character of ore, and prices. Fluorite is a lustrous, glasslike mineral, generally translucent to transparent; it may be clear and colorless or range in color from slightly bluish through various shades of violet, amethyst, purple, green, and yellow. It crystallizes in the isometric system and possesses perfect octahedral cleavage. Commonly it occurs in masses of very pure crystal- line material with aggregates of cubical crystals in open spaces, but - it is also found in fine to coarse granular form. Banded veins and masses with fibrous, radiating structure occur locally. It is usually found associated more or less intimately with other minerals and rocks, from which it must be separated for commercial use. The specific gravity of fluorite is 3.18 and the hardness is 4 in the Mohs scale, compared with 7 for quartz and 3 for calcite. It is distinguished from calcite by its failure to effervesce with dilute hydrochloric acid. Heated with sulphuric acid, it gives off fumes of hydro- fluoric acid, which etch glass.22,25,33.34,35.41

The formation of annealing textures during the course of recrystallization in 2 pct Al-Fe crystals rolled in the (111) [112], (112) [111], and (112) [Till orientations has hem studied in detail. When the rolling texture is composed of both (111) [121] and (001)[110] components, the annealing texture consists of mainly (110) [001] and (113) [332] components. As the (001) [110] component diminishes from the surface to the interior of the rolled crystal, the relative concentration of the (113) [332] component in the annealing texture decreases accordingly, whereas that of the (110)[001] component increases with the (111)[112] component in the rolling texture. Such dependence of the annealing texture on the composition of the rolling texture is in accmdance with the oriented growth mechanism. Grain-growth characteristics during recrystallization, hence the annealing texture, can he considerablv different in (112) [111]-type crystals depending sensitively on the initial orientation of the crystal. In a previous publication,' the formation of rolling textures in 2 pct A1-Fe single crystals with initial orientations of approximately (1ll)[112], (112)[111], and (112)[111] was studied in detail. The deformation texture of these crystals consisted of either a single (111)[112] or a combination of (111)[112] and (001)[110] components in various concentrations. For the (lll)[112] crystal, the deformation texture was a single (lll)[112] up to 70 pct rolling reduction, but it became (lll)[112] plus (001)[110] after -90 pct reduction. For the (112)[113.]-type crystals, the relative concentration of the (111)[ 112] and (001)[110] components varied with the depth below the surface of the crystal, as well as with the amount of deformation. These series of specimens, having deformation textures with a range of concentration of the (111)[112] and (001)[110] components, could therefore be used for a thorough investigation of the effect of deformation-texture components on the formation of annealing textures. In a study of rolling and annealing textures in Si-Fe crystals, Dunn and Koh3 noted that the addition of a (001)[110] component to the (111)[112]-type deformation texture had practically no effect on the recrystallization texture.* According to the ori- ented growth mechanism for the formation of annealing textures, nuclei related to the deformation texture by approximately 30-deg rotation around a common [110] axis have the highest rate of growth and the resulting annealing textures generally have such an orientation relationship with respect to the deformation textures.314 It was reasoned by Dunn and Koh3 that if the oriented growth mechanism operated the recrystallization texture developed from a deformation texture containing both (111)[112] and (001)[110] components should be strongly centered around (113)[332], because (113)[332] is approximately midway between the (111)[112] and (001)[110], and is related to both of these two orientations by [110] rotations of 25 to 30 deg. Hence, nuclei of (113)[332] orientation should have a high rate of growth in the deformed matrix. However, their results were not in accord with this prediction. It was felt by the writers that a detailed study was needed to clarify the effect of deformation-texture components on annealing-texture formation. For this reason, the present investigation was conducted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens used for the present investigation were taken from the crystals rolled previously for deformation-texture studies.' In order to follow the progress of annealing-texture formation during the course of recrystallization, a single specimen was taken from each rolled crystal and its textural changes examined after successive anneals until recrystallization was complete. The specimen was carefully cut from the rolled strip with a jeweler's saw. Prior to annealing, the sawed edges were etched to remove distorted metal, while both faces of the specimen were protected from the etching solution by acid-proof plastic tape. After annealing, the specimen was etched from the "bottom" face only (the reference or "top" face of the specimen was protected by plastic tape) to one half of its original thickness, so that the texture at the surface and at the central section of the strip could be determined by the reflection technique. As described by means of quantitative pole figures, the annealing texture of highly rolled aluminum consists of the four retained components of the rolling texture near (123) [121], rather more sharply developed, and of a cube texture component. Local reorientation corresponds fairly well to 40 rotation around a [111] axis. In copper strip rolled 96 pct, the annealing texture is mainly the cube texture, with the four twin orientations as minor components. The annealing texture of highly rolled brass strip consists of four components of the (225) [734] type. REVIEWS by Wassermann,' Barrett,' Dunn,3 and Richards' give detailed accounts of the numerous publications dealing with annealing textures in rolled polycrystalline metals. Although a considerable amount of information of an empirical nature has been available for many years, even relatively recently the state of recrystallization-texture theory was considered uncertain. The reviews referred to above deal mainly with the description of experimental results, without developing generally applicable principles, suitable for explaining the observed annealing textures. The investigations of Burgers and Louwerse5 and Barrett6 showed that in deformed single crystals of aluminum the orientation of the recrystallized grains deviates drastically from that of the deformed matrix. According to Barrett and to Beck and Hu,7 the relationship between the two orientations can be best described as a rotation of about 40° around a [111] axis. Recent investigations led to similar orientation relationships for various face-centered cubic metals with a simple texture, regardless of whether the annealing process was recrystallization (strain-free grains growing in a highly deformed large crystal of aluminum' or copper: or in deformed cube texture copper") or coarsening (strain-free grains growing at the expense of an essentially strain-free, fine grained, polycrystalline matrix of single orientation texture copper,'" aluminum,' or nickel-iron). Barrett" pointed out the possibility that this orientation relationship may be a result of the orientation dependence of the rate of grain boundary migration. More recently, considerable evidence became available in favor of this view.12,13 In apparent contradiction to the above results, it has been known for a long time that the recrystallization texture of polycrystalline metals is often similar to the deformation texture. This was found, in particular, for the fiber textures obtained by wire drawing, compression, or compression rolling.' Following a suggestion by Barrett,2 Kronberg and Wilson and Beck and Hu7 described a mechanism by which a [Ill] fiber texture, resulting from plastic deformation, may be retained upon recrystallization, even though the orientation of individual recrystallized grains differs from that of the local area of the matrix in which they grow. This mechanism assumes that the reorientation corresponds to a rotation around the [1ll] axis, which is also the fiber axis. The present investigation was undertaken to examine in detail the orientation relationship between deformation texture and recrystallization texture in rolled face-centered cubic metals, using the quantitative methods of texture determination that have recently become available.", '" Quantitative pole figures for the rolling textures of such metals were reported recently." Quantitative pole figures for annealing textures are given in the present paper. It was planned to investigate whether or not the orientation relationship previously found for the recrystallization of deformed single crystals, and for coarsening of single-orientation texture material, is capable of accounting for the observed, often complex, annealing textures in rolled polycrystalline metals. An experimental method and apparatus for the study of the low-temperature phase and volumetric behavior of volatile mixtures are described. The phase diagrams, including the critical points, and the volumetric behavior of a natural gas and a mixture of the natural gas with methane at temperatures from -40°F to -200°F and pressures to 1.200 11si are givrn. INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the phase and volumetric behavior of mixtures of the light hydrocarbons at low temperatures is becoming increasingly important as interest in low-temperature separation processes increases. Distillation at low-lemperatures has been used for some time to recover ethane and ethylene from natural gas and refinery gas for petrochemical uses. Removal of excess nitrogen from natural gas by distillation has been proposed as a means of increasing the capacity of gas transmission lines and of improving the marketability of the gas.1,2 Evaluation of the latter process has been hampered, however, by the scarcity of data from which the phase behavior of natural gases at low temperatures might be predicted. While existing correlations of vaporization equilibrium constants may be used to predict the behavior of such mixtures at lower pressures, high-pressure computations often require knowledge of the location of the critical point of the system involved. Although correlations have been developed for the prediction of the critical temperature and pressure of certain types of hydrocar-bon systems, they do not apply to very volatile systems such as nitrogen-bear-ing natural gases. This paper describes the initial stages of an investigation of the low-temperature behavior of a numher of natural gases and other gases of commercial interest. The experimental method and apparatus are described. and the phase and volumetric behavior of a natural gas and a mixture of the natural gas with methane are presented. PREVIOUS WORK The published low-temperature vapor-liquid equilibrium data for hydrocarbons and mixtures of hydrocarbons with nitrogen and helium are listed in Table I. Most of these data are for binary systems, and the data of Stutz-man and Brown" at 100 psi are the only data on a natural gas. The data of Bloomer and Parent3 on the methafie-nitrogen system, which have been phblished since this study was completed, are a valuable addition to the knowledge in this field. Prior to the publication of these data the only published critical point data on systems having critical temperatures below the ice point were those of Ruhemann.1 on the methane-

Applications of rock mechanics to the design of engineering structures in rock involve the assumption that the stresses are due entirely to the present applied loads. For instance, it is assumed that the vertical normal stress in undisturbed rock free of topographic effects is equal to the weight per unit area of the overburden. In fact, vertical dilatational strains associated with stresses of more than 100 times the present overburden pressure have been measured by strain-relief methods on outcrops. 1,2 The notion of residual strain (stress) or latent stress3 seems unassailable; and indeed this has long been recognized by metallurgists. It is difficult, however, to assess the residual component of the in-situ state of elastic strain with conventional strain relief methods employed in mines or down boreholes. That is, in principle, the in-situ state results from the superposition of present applied loads (natural or man- induced) and potentially recoverable elastic strains (stresses) that exist in a given volume of material even though there are no external forces across the boundaries of the body (Voight,4 and Fig, 1). Accordingly, only in unloaded blocks can the true residual strains be measured by strain relief methods. Using X-rays, the elastic strains locked within the quartz grains or crystals of a rock can be measured. These strains are known to persist even when the rock is reduced to small chips but to vanish when the rock is disaggregated and the grains are powdered. The essential differences expressed by the different speakers participating in this symposium concern merely the relative emphasis placed on the subjects that are commonly included under the term "geophysics" and the branches of science that form the basis for investigations in this field. In order to appreciate the present situation it may be profitable to briefly refer to a few historical matters. One can find almost countless descriptions of geological phenomena long antedating the introduction of the title of "geology," which has been credited to Richard de Bury in the fourteenth century. Interpretations, when they were offered, were generally pure speculation. Only toward the close of the eighteenth century do we find theories developed as the result of observations and tested by additional observations. It is difficult to select and give proper credit to the individual who was particularly responsible for turning geology into a distinctly observational science. william Smith, who has been called the "Father of English Geology," certainly represents the period when observation was the only method used. As he traveled through the British Isles, "sometimes 10,000 miles in a year," he was continually making notes of his observations. Geikie says: "His plain, solid, matter of fact intellect never branched into theory or speculation, but occupied itself wholly in the observation of facts." William Smith, with others of his time, definitely laid firmly the foundations on which modern geology has been built. Field and laboratory observations can no longer be said to constitute the sole basis for geologic contributions but we have not laid aside the methods of Smith and his followers. It is folly to underestimate the fundamental value of the observational part of geology in the present. The objection to purely observational geology is that it is mainly qualitative and not quantitative, general and not specific. No one can deny this charge and probably there are few who do not welcome every method or process whereby we can put aside generalities for definite established values. Physics is the science that has particularly come to the aid of the geologist in this respect. Contributions of PhYsics It is not the intent of the writer to enumerate or to evaluate all of the contributions to geologic advance in the field of. physics. A few only are used for the purpose of illustration, When Clarence King, Director of the United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, invited Ferdinand Zirkel to study 2500 thin sections of rocks collected from the western United States, the use of the microscope came into general use. Zirkel's report was published in 1876. He was not the first to use transmitted light for microscopic rock determination, some work having been done by Henry Clifton Sorby and others some years earlier, but he was the first to put into general use this method. ELECTRICAL power and distribution for the sulphide ore plant is an addition and extension of the existing power system which has served the oxide reduction plant since its inception in 1914. The power plant is located at Tocopilla on the west coast of Chile, some 90 miles from Chuquicamata. A brief description of this plant and the existing transmission system is necessary to an understanding of the problems involved in the provision for the sulphide plant load. Originally the Tocopilla power plant consisted of four Escher Wyss turbines driving Siemens Schuckert generators, each rated 10,000 kw. At various times, units of 10,000 and 20,000 kw were added, all of which operated at 215 psi and 600°F at throttle. In order to improve the economy of the station, a Topping unit was installed in 1938 together with a high-pressure steam generator of 360,000 lb per hr capacity. This unit is rated at 11,000 kw and was designed for 750 psi, 880°F. The exhaust from this turbine passes to the low pressure station header for operation of part of the low pressure turbines. Total kw generated by the high pressure boiler, topping turbine and associated low pressure turbines totals 33,000 kw and the total station capacity is 113,000 kw. This installation proved one of the most successful of its kind, operating almost continuously. The original plant was of German design and consequently European characteristics were incorporated into the system, the frequency being 50 cycles and voltages of 500, 5000 and 100,000 were used for low, generator, and transmission voltages,

A petrographic study was made of the type and sources of mineral contamination occurring in Florida phosphate rock products. Emphasis was placed on contaminants in the screened rock (+1 mm), since this portion of the product undergoes no physical beneficiation except for scrubbing to remove slimes. Since iron and aluminum contents of the finished product affect the salability, special emphasis was placed on identifying types and sources of these contaminants and relating chemical composition to visual characteristics. Wavellite derived from the overburden was the major aluminum contaminant with some aluminum being included as secondary clay balls. Iron occurred as phosphates in the overburden and as colloidal oxides included in the phosphate pebbles. Chert and limestone contamination derived from the Hawthorne formation underlying the phosphate matrix.

Instantaneous outbursts of coal in underground workings have occurred frequently in various coal fields in Nova Scotia; British Columbia; Canada; South Staffordshire, England; and the states of Washington, Virginia, West Virginia and eastern Kentucky in the United States. Such outbursts in eastern Kentucky have been called "mountain bumps " because they are more likely to occur under mountain cover than elsewhere, but recently they have become generally known as "coal bumps." The eastern Kentucky coal field has been troubled by these outbursts since 1923. Many men have been injured and killed, and the morale of the workmen in the vicinity of such outbursts has been affected to such an extent that mine production has suffered for a considerable period following each outburst. Such phenonlenal occurrence in any coal field naturally has led to discussion as to the cause and means of prevention. In the eastern Kentucky field, local mine officials, workmen, mining engineers, and many others have offered many ideas as to the cause and many methods of prevention have been suggested, and tried without success. Some of the plans were either practically or economically unsound and in general impossible to follow. To enumerate all the suggestions would require a large volume. One cause mentioned was that they might be due to gas under high pressure, as in Lower Silesian mines, and the remedy reeommcnded was to drain the gas by drilling holes into a suspected area. A hole 30 ft. long was drilled into a 60-ft. pillar to allow the gas to drain off, hut the pillar bumped the next day. Realizing the importance of obtaining the best information available on coal bumps, the writer, with the permission of the Harlan County Coal Operators' Assoeiation, invited Mr. George S. Rire, Chief Mining Engineer of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, who had investigated bumps in several countries, to conduct an investigation of coal bumps in this field.
