The lack of a continuous operating balance in petroleum refining, which is analyzed in this paper, is by no means a feature solely of this division of the oil industry. Serious disequilibria of a capital as well as an operating nature exist both in the producing and marketing departments, while problems in the former and to some degree the latter are complicated by political involvements. Attention has previously been directed to the unstabilizing influence of present proration formulas in stimulating unnecessary drilling.' While equilibrium in petroleum refining operations has been fairly well maintained in the past decade, examination of departures may prove fruitful. Economic analysis is the application of time and motion study to the functioning of management, rather than labor. Properly applied it may reveal changes in policies that would increase the utility of the properties and facilities of the industry for stockholders, employees and the public, while contributing a stabilizing influence to the general economy. The study of economic equilibrium is essentially one of measurement and interpretation, requiring adequate data and the development of a technique of analysis that employs statistical and mathematical methods as a supplement to the broad descriptive phase of economics. The latter is the more complex of the two for it is concerned with proportionating the supplies of the several products stemming from the joint source to the demands for the individual products which are subject to wide variations. IN February, 1918, the conclusion was published by Lewis and Beal1 "that wells of equal output on the average will produce equal amounts of oil in the future, regardless of the ages of the wells." This conclusion was based upon the study of data collected principally in Oklahoma and was not known at that time to be true for other oil fields. An abundance of statistical proof was later, collected by the senior author of the present paper, which showed that the conclusion was undoubtedly well founded and that it applied to other fields as well. Accordingly, it was later restated2 as the "law of equal expectations" as follows: "If two wells under similar conditions .produce equal amounts during any given year, the amounts they will produce thereafter, on the average, will be approximately equal, regardless of their relative ages." Although only scanty data from the California oil fields were available at the time this publication was prepared, sufficient information was analyzed upon which to base the insert on Fig. 80, which showed beyond a doubt that the law held at least for a part of the Midway oil field in California. Recently the authors have collected more complete data in California, and it is the purpose of this paper to explain the method used in demonstrating the truth of the law and, in addition, to give several methods by which curves constructed in accordance with this law can be used in a practical way with ease and accuracy.

THE purpose of this paper is to describe, in a general way, gold-dredging operations in California, with particular reference to unusual features, including types of deposits and recent attempts to improve the recovery of the gold. Dredging Areas The gold-bearing formations that traversed the western slope of the Sierra Nevadas for a north and south distance of some 300 miles furnished the immediate source of the gold found in most of the placer deposits of California. Erosion through a long period carried the gold, together with various forms of partly disintegrated material, to lower elevations and formed placer deposits. Through the classifying action of water in motion, the coarser gold and heavier material of various kinds were - deposited relatively near the source; consequently, in the higher mountain country, old river channels were worked feverishly during the early California gold-rush days because of their high gold content. With the working out of these known high-grade channels, and from the knowledge thus obtained of prehistoric stream beds, drift mining was started and flourished until about 1890. Even today many drift mines are operating with the objective of opening other old Tertiary river channels that have been covered by volcanic flows. Adjacent to these areas, which contained relatively high gold values in the older river channels, smaller particles of gold, gravel, and debris were deposited along the sides of the former stream beds and on the adjoining flat areas, thus forming the large placer deposits, which were worked principally by hydraulic mining. Small scale open pit mining of the Lucky Mc property in the Gas Hills district of central Wyoming was started in the spring of 1954 and the first uranium ore went to Vitro's mill in Salt Lake City that July. Shortly after mining started it became apparent that accurate ore control for mining purposes would be an absolute requirement. A systematic drilling program was initiated in the spring of 1955, and has been continued up to the present time. Two main mining areas have been developed. Mine 1, at the site of the original ore discovery in the Gas Hills, covers a mineralized zone roughly 600 x 2800 ft. This orebody was outlined and developed by drill holes on 50-ft centers. Approximately 1300 holes were drilled in the area before preliminary mining plans were made and mineable reserves calculated. Reserve estimates were based almost entirely on chemical assays of drill hole samples.

THE principle formulated by Grossmann1 for calculating hardenability of steel by multiplying the ideal diameter of "pure" iron-carbon alloys by factors for grain size and alloying elements has been confirmed on many steels and has proved useful in designing substitute alloy steels. Grossmann found that the typical behavior of the multiplying factors was to increase directly in proportion to the amount of the alloy present in a steel. However, the multiplying factor for the effect of silicon on hardenability was found by Grossmann to increase to a lesser degree as the amount of silicon was increased. In view of the in¬creasing use of silicon in heat-treating steels, the effect of silicon on hardenability is becoming more important. Calculation of the hardenability of high-silicon steels made at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc., indicated that the multiplying factor for silicon increased directly in proportion to the amount of silicon present. A more extended study of high-silicon steels covering fairly wide ranges of grain size, carbon, manganese, and aluminum has confirmed that up to 2 per cent silicon the multiplying factor is directly proportional to the silicon content. Manganese and aluminum factors have also been determined. The results of the study offer strong confirmation of the general validity of Grossmann's multiplying principle. TESTING PROCEDURE Steels on which the study of the effect of silicon on hardenability was based were made in high-frequency induction furnaces using Armco iron and standard alloying materials. The ingots were forged to bars, and sections were normalized prior to machining Jominy hardenability test specimens. The Jominy test was carried out under standard conditions.2 The depth of hardness penetration for determination of ideal diameter at "half hardness" was taken at the hardness level indicated in Fig. 20 in Grossmann's paper by the solid line for 50 per cent martensite in plain carbon steel. The depth of penetration of hardness on the Jominy specimen was converted to ideal diameter by the relation given in Fig. 28 of Grossmann's paper. Chemical analysis was determined on a sample taken adjacent to the Jominy specimen. Aluminum was determined as "acid-soluble aluminum" rather than as total aluminum, as it is probably more representative of the aluminum that is effective as an alloying agent. In addition to the elements nominally present in the steels, analyses were made for residual phosphorus, sulphur, nickel, copper, molybdenum and chromium on one heat of those made with the same materials during the same period. Actual grain size was determined by microscopic examination of small samples quenched in water after receiving the same thermal cycle as the Jominy hardenability specimens. Chemical analyses, heat-treatment, grain size, and hardenability are shown in Table I representing three ranges of composition.

THE modern smelting and refining of copper is distinctly an American development. The present demand for sound and perfect castings for rolling is due to the development of American industry. Prac-tically every article made from sheet metal or, for that matter, from any form of metal is made by mass produc-tion methods. Faulty material disturbs the orderly sequence of operations and in addition requires expen-sive inspection and unbearable rejection of finished product. This demand, therefore, is positive and will have to be met. Some mines produce ore that can be smelted and re-fined without the electrolytic process into satisfactory copper for the wrought metal industry, and some of these ores carry small amounts of impurities that are of use in hardening and toughening the copper. Most of the copper ore mined contains impurities that must be removed and, fortunately, precious metals which are separated at the same time make this re-moval profitable. The modern electrolytic refineries have their methods so well under control that the product meets all re-quirements without question if properly fire refined and cast. The "if" in this case is important, because there is evidence of carelessness or want of control at times in the material from some of the producers. It is nec-essary that the melted cathodes should be saturated with oxide to dispose of sulfur and that the copper should then be poled to the proper pitch or set. Sometimes statements leak out to the effect that it is unnecessary to oxidize completely the molten cathodes and a little less rabbling saves poles, which are expensive. The re-sult is that the rolling mill gets porous castings and produces seamy or slivered sheets or strips. The condition of the molds, their temperature, and the temperature of the metal are all important to good copper cakes, wedges, or wire bars. Cracked, and burned molds leave rough places and porous spots. Molds which are out of shape, or cracked, make shrink-age cracks which gap open when the castings are hot-rolled. Dampness means porosity. Drops of oil mean porous or honey-combed areas. Poor or irregular dress-ing means mold wash in the castings. Cold copper or slow pouring means cold sets.

IN the West, capitalists have expended many millions of dollars developing the low-grade porphyry ores of copper. Half a dozen of these great enterprises have proved to be wonderful commercial successes. They have demanded improved crushing and concentrating machinery and consequently it has been .developed. Many improved methods, cheap power, superior business organization, all these have contributed to this success, but the main feature is the handling of the material in enormous quantities, on a manufacturing scale. The mining chance of "striking it rich" has been eliminated by the manufacturing certainty, of handling large quantities of material of known valise, which while of relatively low grade, is available in large tonnages, assuring a supply for .many years' run of the mill. Then the returns on the money invested are sure. The concentration of low-grade magnetic iron ores, separating the magnetite crystals from the gangue by the use of magnets, is a field of work in which the lessons taught by the development of the porphyry coppers can be studied to advantage. Large-scale operations, and the liberal expenditure of enough money at the start to insure the most economical operations, are the means of securing the desired results. The problem is to utilize millions of tons, and we may safely say billions of tons, of now worthless iron-bearing rock and to, produce from it 10,000,000 to 20,000,000 tons per year of high-grade ore carrying 60 per cent. iron or, higher;. to take the lean material as found in nature, varying widely in iron content, and bring it up to a uniform standard of shipping ore. At present these ores are mined carrying from 25 to 50 per cent. iron, and the shipping product is brought up to 60 or 65 per cent. Fe. If future economies of operation make it possible to extend this process so that 15 per cent. iron in the crude ore can be treated as a commercial success, the additional tonnage available will be enormous. A 15 per cent. Fe crude ore raised to 60 per cent. Fe concentrate with 5 per cent.

Actual test specimens used in the previous laboratory wear investigation,' were fully characterized and the data is given in Table 1. Most of the carbides tested could be placed into groups of similar mean grain size. When the wear rates of the members of these groups were plotted as functions of their hardnesses, a family of curves resulted; curves for groups containing data from larger grained composites were at lower wear rates at the same hardnesses. IT is generally recognized that the .addition of limited small amounts of various lead salts may aid the extracting power of the mill cyanide solution in the dissolution of silver from ores and in some cases may aid in the treatment of gold ores. Excess soluble lead compounds retard the dissolution of precious metals by the usual mill cyanide solution. Another phase of cyanidation is the use of the zinc-lead couple as an aid to better precipitation of gold and silver from solution containing a low percentage of cyanide. The chemistry of the use of lead salts in cyanidation has been dis-cussed by Clennell;1 the addition of lead salts in various cyanide mills is recorded by von Bernewitz;2 and the reasons for the use of lead salts in cyanidation have been explained by Clevenger.3 This paper deals with the adaptation of cyanidation to a different condition, in which the presence of lead minerals in a gold ore that is refractory to direct cyanidation complicates the treatment. If free gold is roasted in the presence of sulfur and lead salts, or if pyritic gold ores containing even a small percentage of lead minerals are roasted to free the gold from the pyrite, lead compounds coat the gold particles enough to make them almost insoluble in the usual mill cyanide solution contain-ing lime for protective alkalinity. Also, the lead compounds remaining in the calcine are slightly soluble in the mill solutions and such dissolved lead may retard the dissolution of the gold by the removal of oxygen or

The term 'Llow-sulfur coal," as used in this discussion, is limited to coals containing less, or very little more, than 1 per cent. sulfur. For certain purposes it might be advantageous to include coals that contain as much as 1.25 per cent. sulfur, because such coals have been considered as available for making metallurgic coke of fair grade; but the same reasoning might apply to coals containing as much as.1 1/2 per cent. sulfur, if facilities exist for utilizing such coal by admixture with coal containing less sulfur. , In Pennsylvania, it is not possible to define the exact geographic limits of the areas in which coals relatively low in sulfur exist, because variations in the percentage of sulfur occur irregularly and often abruptly. It is not uncommon to find areas, more or less circumscribed in extent, in which the coal is relatively high in sulfur although all the surrounding territory contains low-sulfur coal; and, similarly, small areas of low-sul. fur coal exist in districts where the coal is normally high in sulfur. These generalizations apply, with few exceptions, to the whole area underlaid with bituminous coal in the State of Pennsylvania, and also to each of the individual beds of coal in this state. Pennsylvania is poorly supplied with coals of the low-sulfur class. We find, however, as an offset to this condition, very large areas in which coal ranging from 1 to 2 1/2 per cent. sulfur exists in beds of good workable thickness. This coal, by washing, can be reduced in sulfur low enough to make coke of a high grade. While a considerable tonnage of workable low-sulfur coal remains in the Pennsylvania bituminous districts, it has been necessary to turn to the areas of higher sulfur coal for the supply of metallurgical coke. This utilization of the higher sulfur areas has been made possible either by washing or by selective mining. Washing.—Fine crushing of the entire feed is not generally necessary to the successful washing of Pennsylvania coals. This is due to the fact that the pyrite is rarely finely and uniformly disseminated throughout the coal but is usually confined to high-sulfur benches in the bed or to concentrations on the cleavage planes of the coal. Hence, by graded crushing and sizing it is frequently possible to at once reclaim those portions of the coal bed containing coal that is relatively free from pyrite.

FROM time to time, one of the authors has had occasion to investigate the graphitizing reaction and has published the results mainly as discussion1 of the work of other investigators. In view, therefore, of the diversity of both observations and interpretation, it seemed well to attempt a revision of the entire subject in the Research Laboratory of the National Malleable Castings Co. The work consisted of a careful study of a single, impure, iron-carbon alloy. The material, which may be considered typical low-carbon white cast iron of the malleable industry, was an air-furnace iron of the following composition: carbon 2.30 per cent., silicon 1.20 per cent., manganese 0.29 per cent., phosphorus 0.156 per cent., sulfur 0.048 per cent. The freezing range extended from 1213° to 1132° C., the latter figure agreeing with Gontermann's data .2 We have attempted to define the equilibrium diagram of this alloy, in the stable condition as related to the metastable diagram, from a temperature somewhat below the eutectic freezing point to a temperature below Ar1 and for a graphitic-carbon content from practically nothing to the original total carbon of the specimen (see Fig. 6). More especially we desired to locate the line in the stable diagram corresponding to the Acm line of the metastable system, which is designated by analogy, the Atm line (tm from temper carbon) ; also to determine the location of Aim with respect to Acm toward their lower extremities at Ar1 in order to determine whether or not graphitization is completed by the separation of an iron-carbon eutectoid analagous to pearlite in the iron-cementite system. This would involve further a comparison of the locations of the stable and metastable A1 points.

Qualitatively, galena (native lead sulfide) reacts with aqueous solutions of the xanthates,1 and has its surface sufficiently altered so that there is a tendency for air bubbles to attach themselves to the mineral crystals where there was no such effect before the treatment. This property is utilized in froth flotation operations where the mineral sulfide particles are raised into the froth and the gangue whose surface is not altered remains behind. The results of a study of this reaction were reported2 recently and certain tentative suggestions about the interaction of galena and the alkali xanthates were offered. In this paper, there is set down the results of a detailed quantitative investigation of the ions involved in this interaction with a view to finding out more about the condition existing immediately at the surface of a crystal like a heavy metal sulfide after treatment with an organic reagent. Past experimental experience showed that finely ground galena shaken with aqueous potassium xanthate abstracts xanthate ion and at the same time sulfate ion, reducing ions of the type (SmOn)= where the ratio of m to n is less than 4:l (as in sulfate), sometimes hydroxyl ion, are thrown into solution.3 Ions Involved in Xanthate-galena Interaction The present quantitative study of the galena-aqueous potassium xanthate system shows that at the lower concentrations of potassium xanthate (less than about 25 mg. per liter) the amount of xanthate ion abstracted by the galena can be accounted for by the amount of reducing ions of the (SmOn)= type and sulfate ion thrown into solution. Manganese-ores are known to exist in the Caucasus in a number of localities, viz., in the government of Kutais, near the village of Chiaturi; in the same goverilment near the Choruk river, southward from Batum; and in the governments of Erivan and Tiflis. In smaller quantities they are found in various other places also. The first-mentioned deposits are by far the most important; the others being not only less extensive, but remote from present means of communication, and, from their character, expensive to work, although in some cases the ore is of a superior quality. All the manganese-ore now known in the market as a Caucasian " ore comes from Chiaturi, no other deposits in the Caucasus having been worked commercially; movements have been made, however, towards the exploitat,ion of some of those on the Choruk river. The Manganese-Ore District of Chiaturi. General Remarks, Statistics, Etc.—No other known deposit of manganese-ore can approach that of Chiaturi in capacity for producing large quantities of high-grade ore at a low cost. The deposit is said to have been discovered in 1848, by the geologist Abich, but the first shipments were not made until 1879, when 871 tons* were produced. Since that time, the production has steadily increased, until now the world relies on this deposit for about one-half its supply of manganese-ore. The industry is also of great importance locally, and aftords a livelihood to a considerable proportion of the population of the district in which the deposit is situated.

THE reverberatory copper-refining furnaces at the Great Falls Reduction Dept. of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. have used successively, as fuel, lump coal on grates, pulverized coal, oil and natural gas. In no other plant, so far as can be ascertained, has such a variety of fuels been used. This fact affords a unique opportunity for comparing the relative efficiency obtained with these several fuels under nearly identical conditions. FURNACES The present furnace refinery at Great Falls was placed in operation in April, 1916. The original installation consisted of two furnaces, each with hearths 36 by 14 ft. and provided with fire boxes 10 by 12 ft. for firing lump coal on grates. These furnaces had air-cooled sand bottoms and chrome-brick side walls both above and below the metal line. The roofs were of 12-in. silica brick. Each furnace was provided with a waste-heat boiler of approximately 400 boiler-hp. capacity. We soon found that chrome brick was very unsatisfactory as sidewall material because of its excessive spalling. At the first opportunity the furnaces were rebuilt, using magnesite brick below the metal line and silica brick from the metal line to the roof. At the same time the thickness of the side walls was increased, thus decreasing the width of the hearth to 13 ft. At about this time also, the thickness of the furnace roofs was increased from 12 to 15 in. No further changes occurred in furnace design until 1922, when the use of lump coal on grates was abandoned in favor of pulverized coal.

Barite deposits are of widespread occurrence in Nevada but there are few pro-ducing properties; most of the latter are in northern Nevada. The production of the state is small at present-in the neighborhood of 15,000 tons annually-but is steadily increasing. The barite occurs in veins and also as replacement deposits in lime-stone. The bulk of the production has come from the replacement deposits. It is thought that the barite was deposited from rising hot waters similar to-and probably contemporaneous with-those responsible for some of the metallic ores of the state. This paper discusses only the deposits in northern Nevada. THE commercial mining of barite did not begin in Nevada until 1916 but although the production has been small there has been a rapid increase in tonnage during the past several years. Barite is widely distributed in the state and production comes from at least nine of the seventeen counties. Apparently this is not generally known, as only two counties are mentioned in a recent publications dealing with barite. The increase in output is due largely to recently discovered barite deposits in northern Nevada. The principal production has come from the northern portions of Lander and Eureka counties; smaller amounts from Elko County. The discussion in this paper is confined largely to the deposits in these counties. Most of the producing area is tributary to the Western Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads, whose tracks lie along the Humboldt River. Barite is known from other northern counties but so far the production has been small. The output has come entirely from veins and replacement deposits, the latter largely in sedimentary rocks. In general, the barite from veins is white; that from the replacement deposits usually is dark gray to black, although some is light gray or white. Most of the veins contain sulphides and many barite-bearing veins have been worked for their content of base or precious metals.

ROTARY kiln operators will agree that some of the most severe conditions a refractory must stand occur in the hot zone of a kiln burning Portland cement, dead burn dolomite, magnesite, periclase, and similar materials. Frequently the operator is faced with factors beyond his control which drastically shorten the life of refractories. Shutdown due to mechanical failure can be serious if the period is of sufficiently long duration to cause the dropping of coating or the loosening of the lining. A change in slurry can affect the coating and cause ring buildup. A change in type of fuel and its effect upon the flame can cause a shift in location of the hottest zone. Weekend shutdowns or any other interruption can cause the operator trouble and may damage the refractories, since stopping and starting a rotary kiln is certainly more difficult than stopping and starting a motor. Some operators have tried to set an estimate of damage for each shutdown in equivalent days of running time. Conditions affecting the refractory may be roughly grouped in four classes: chemical attack, mechanical stress, thermal shock, and abrasion. Chemical Attack: The drive to obtain maximum production through a kiln demands maximum operating temperatures, temperatures which are limited more by the ringing up or melting of the clinker. This can cause interface temperatures at the junction of coating and refractory which require the use of a basic kiln block to withstand the chemical attack. Chemical changes take place within the refractory itself, especially in chemically bonded or unburned kiln blocks: These changes cause the formation of the ceramic or burned bond. Migrating liquids or fluxes from the kiln charge have an effect within the refractory and lead to mineral or glass formation. The alkalies, sodium and potassium, migrate into the refractory as silicates, chlorides, sulphates or other salts. They may move under capillary action or may be caused to move by volatilization with condensation in the cooler portion. Mechanical Stress: Concentrated stress may be caused by several factors or combinations thereof. 1-The rings of refractories must be kept tight and rigid within the kiln, and this alone demands considerable force to hold the blocks in place. So that the force will not be concentrated, the blocks should fit the circle as perfectly as possible, with the faces in contact overall. 2-As the kiln is heated, thermal expansion takes place at the hot end of the kiln block. Since this disturbs the plane face it too can cause a concentrated stress at the two ends of the block, and shearing stress can be set up within the brick itself because of the difference in expansion between the two ends. 3-If a lining becomes loose and moves in the shell very severe stress can be set up, and as the kiln rotates this load changes and gives the effect of repeated loading. Permanent expansion of the refractory can also cause severe loading. 4-Not least important, flexing of the kiln is frequently the cause of concentrated stresses. Thermal Shock: Thermal shock, the result of heating and cooling too rapidly, occurs on starting and stopping or when a large patch of coating drops, exposing the bricks. Again, its destructive effect is often the result of phase change, liquid to solid or the reverse; dense refractories loaded with glass-forming impurities are particularly susceptible. Thermal shock is a problem with refractories set in the wall or roof of a stationary furnace, and becomes even more serious in a rotary kiln, the tendency to spall being magnified with movement and concentration of stress. Uniform rate of feed and loading insures both better coating and a more uniform stress. Abrasion: If the refractories do not take a coating, abrasion can become a most destructive factor. Movement of the lining in shell or movement of loose blocks causes abrasion, which is also most destructive if the refractories do not take a coating. An analysis of the problem of basic lining for the hot zone reveals, therefore, a number of desirable characteristics: high refractoriness, basic chemical reaction, resistance to spalling, good strength at all stages, ability to take coating, true sizing, volume stability, and abrasion resistance. The existence of natural gas-springs in Pennsylvania and the adjoining States west of the crest of the Allegheny Mountains was known to the earliest settlers. Possibly the first gas obtained from a well was at Fredonia, Chautauqua County, N. Y., where a well was sunk on the bank of Canadaway Creek, near the Main Street bridge, in 1821, and sufficient gas obtained for 30 burners, the inn having been illuminated by the gas when General Lafayette passed through the village about 1821. In 1858 another well was drilled, which supplied 200 burners. A still larger one was drilled to a depth of 1200 feet in 1871. According to Mr. E. J. In quantitative interpretation of electrical logs the presence of clay minerals introduces an additional variable which further complicates an already complex problern. Although recognizing the difficulties introduced as a result of the heterogeneity of natural sediments and despite the present incomplete state of knowledge regarding electrochemical behavior of shales, dissemirzated clay minerals and concentrated electrolytes, it was felt that useful empirical correlations might be obtained from experimental investigation. Six typical sandstone formations, having a wide variety of petrophysical properties, were selected for the study. Approximately 45 samples from each formation were selected to satisfactorily represent the range of pore size distribution within the particular formation, As a matter of general interest, four limestone formations were also included in the investigation. Previously proposed equations relating to resistivity, SP and interrelationship of the two phenomena have, where possible, been tested with data obtained in this investigation. These equations do not satisfactorily describe experimental behavior of samples through all degrees of shaliness or throughout the range of brine solution resistivities normally encountered in logging practice. An empirical equation has been developed which quantitatively relates formation resistivity factor to satirrnting solution resistivity, porosity, and "effective clay content." This relation is indicated to be uniformly applicable to clean or shaly reservoir rocks. It is shown that both the SP and resistivity phenomena of shaly samples are related to the sample cation exchange capacity per unit pore volume. The independent chemical determination of this parameter is thus a means of determining the "effective clay content" of samples. Some implications regarding theory and electric log interpretation of shaly sands are discussed. INTRODUCTION The use of electrical resistivity logs as a means for estimating formation porosity is based upon the original work of Archie1. It was shown by empirical methods that the resistivity of a rock, when 100 per cent saturated with brine solution, could be related to rock porosity through the equation, F = Ro/ RW = f-m.......(1) where F, the formation resistivity factor, is defined as the ratio of the resistivity of the 100 per cent water saturated rock, Ro, to the saturating solution resistivity, Rw; f is the ratio of pore volume to bulk volume; and m is the slope of the average line when the data are plotted on log-log paper. This relation was established for relatively shale-free formations containing water having high salt concentrations, and under these conditions F may be considered constant for a given rock sample. Applications of Eq. 1 to interpretation of logs of shale-free formations has been quite successful when satisfactory formation water resistivity data could be obtained. The most readily available means of estimating formation water resistivity is the self-potential log. Conventional methods of SP log interpretation involve correct.

IN a recent paper on the solubility of carbon in Ni-Cu alloys,' Nicholson reported that the carbon solubility appeared to be limited by the electronic structure of the alloys and that the solubility was propor- tional to the density of states at the Fermi surface of the "3d" band. In order to determine whether or not this relationship is a general one, the study has been extended to other systems. One of these is the CO-Ni system. This system was chosen for study because 1) it is adjacent to Ni-Cu system in the periodic table, 2) the alloys of cobalt and nickel do not form stable carbides at 1000°C, and 3) the system exhibits no pronounced change (less than 1 pct) in lattice parameter from cobalt to nickel,' see Fig. 1. The alloys were prepared from -200-mesh 99.92 pct Ni furnished by the International Nickel Co. and spectroscopically pure -200-mesh cobalt sponge obtained from Johns on-Matthey and Co. The powders were weighed, mixed, and pressed using a pressure of 40,000 psi. The samples were sintered for 24 hr at 900° C in dry hydrogen and then cold rolled to a thickness of 0.010 in. (Samples containing more than 70 wt pct Co had to be annealed after cold reductions of about 20 pct to avoid cracking.) The alloys were carburized at 1000°C in an alun-durn boat containing Acheson AUC powdered graphite in an atmosphere of carbon monoxide cylinder gas which had been passed through Ascarite to remove carbon dioxide. After carburizing for either 12 or 24 hr the samples were moved to a cool zone of the furnace to cool. Cooling required about 5 min. The samples were filed to remove about 0.005 in. from the surface and then analyzed using a conventional combustion-gravimetric analytic method. The results of this investigation are shown in the lower portion of Fig. 1 and Tabulated in Table I. The nickel percentages for these alloys were determined from the weights of the powders from which the alloys were made. The solubility of carbon in pure cobalt at 1000°C (fcc) is 0.25 wt pct. This is somewhat less than the 0.33 wt pct measured by Boecker.3 From his data, it would appear Boecker's samples were supersaturated before the equilibrating treatment and that a 20-min treatment was not long enough to achieve equilibrium. Since in the present investigation the 12 and 24 treatments produced essentially equal carbon contents, our figure is presumed to represent more nearly the equilibrium value. The solubility of carbon in nickel of 0.19 wt pct agrees quite well with the value of 0.21 wt pct
