In this investigation, the effects of the surface tension of brine and the interfacial tension between oil and brine on the recovery of oil by water flooding of Woodbine sand were studied. Variation of the surface forces was obtained by the addition of small amounts of commercially available chemicals, which did not appreciably change the surface tension of the oil. Fourteen surface-active agents, which were found to be effective in lowering the surface and interfacial tensions, were further investigated to determine the extent of their adsorption by the Woodbine Sand cores. It was found that adsorption was sufficient in all cases to prevent any substantial concentration of chemical at the flood front. The flow system was, therefore, brought to equilibrium with definite concentrations in the flood water by circulation before each test. The data thus have no relation to the results obtainable by using the chemicals in full-scale water floods, but should be helpful in predicting the performance of surface-active chemicals which are not lost by adsorption, if such can be found. Flow tests were made on various concentrations 01 six chemicals selected from the 14 investigated for surface activity and adsorption, with and without the presence of gas in the core. It was found that lowering the interfacial tension had a tendency toward reducing the recovery of oil and that the reduction of the surface tension of the brine had little or no effect. A substantial beneficial effect, however, resulted from the presence of gas in the cores. INTRODUCTION The movement and distribution of crude oil in a porous medium are governed by such factors as surfacc and interfacial tensions, viscosity of the oil, pore size configuration, and wetting characteristics of the medium. The knowledge of the part played by each of these factors is limited. If the oil is assumed to be distributed in droplets whose movement is restricted only by the pore openings, the following equation may be applied: ?P= 2r(1/r1-1/r2) .......(1) In this equation ?P is the pressure drop necessary to force an oil droplet through the construction, r is the oil-brine interfacial tension, r1 is the radius of curvature at the forward and smaller end of the deformed droplet, and r2 is the larger radius. This equation neglects the effects of viscosity, as a static or near static condition is assumed. It would apply equally well for a bubble of gas in liquid if r were taken as the surface tension of the liquid. This relation shows that droplets can be more easily displaced if the interfacial tension is decreased. The displacement of oil from the surface of a sand particle may also be considered from the basis of selective wetting assuming that the oil droplets are smaller than the pore constructions and that the sand surfaces may be considered as planes. A relation of the forces involved can be derived from Dupre's equation to give: Wos = row (1 +Cos?)........(2) where Wos = Work of adhesion between the sand and the oil row = Oil-water interfacial tension 0 = Contact angle ros = Oil-solid interfacial tension This equation would indicate that the displacement of oil from a sand surface is more readily obtained when the water-oil interfacial tension is reduced provided the contact angle remains constant. Evidently. however, the values of Cos 0 may vary along with the water-oil interfacial tension due to changes in the other surfaces of the system. The above theoretical considerations suggest that perhaps even the static behavior of a dispersed oil phase in a porous medium is considerably more complex than may be inferred by the simple systems

A GREAT number of hypotheses has been advanced to explain the complex phenomena that are encountered in flotation. In the days of bulk-oil flotation, when a large quantity of oil was employed, it was observed that the oil-mineral aggregate floated above the ore-pulp because of its lesser density. With the advent of froth-flotation this phase of the theory had to be modified to take into-account the presence of air bubbles.. The reason why the mineral-bearing froth of today rises to the top of flotation cells is, of course, because the air-mineral aggregate, with whatever reagent may be associated with it, is lighter than the pulp. In an attempt to explain froth-flotation the fact has been emphasized that certain minerals are wetted and therefore remain in water; while others are not wetted and therefore become associated in preference with air. Such an "explanation" does not explain facts, it merely states them; for instance, it does not explain why minerals are wetted under some circumstances and not wetted under others. Going somewhat further, the wetting or nonwetting of minerals by water has been ascribed' to differences in the angles of contact between oil droplets and mineral surface at the surface of the minerals. This explanation, however, was abandoned when soluble flotation reagents came to replace the so-called "insoluble" reagents. Another theory, sponsored about 10 years ago by Ralston,2 involves the effects of electric charges at the surface of the mineral particles and air bubbles. This theory, unfortunately, was not developed as fully as it seems desirable. MaNY reports on metal working with explosives have appeared in the literature during the last few yearsThis paper describes experiments concern- ing the mechanism of the explosive metal-cladding process. It has become increasingly important as a unique method for bonding metals and a typical cladding arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. A theoretical analysis of the mechanism of explosive bonding and a description of the nature and types of bond zones obtained was given by Cowan and oltzman." A further discussion of the basic principles of the process, a detailed description of the different bond-zone types, and extensive information on the properties and the applications of explosively bonded metals was recently published by Holtzman and cowan. " The process is now in commercial use by E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. The concept of the existence of a jet during metal bonding with explosives forms a central part in the theoretical analysis of the cladding mechanism described by Cowan and Holtzman When a layer of explosive is detonated on a metal plate that is separated from a second metal plate by a small distance the metal plate in contact with the detonating explosive is accelerated by the detonation pressure. An angle is established between the undeflected and deflected portions of the plate. Subsequently the deflected portion of the first plate collides with the second metal plate.

Dendritic aggregate of ice formed on freezing of aqueous soluitions has been studied. Chlorides of sodium, potassiutn, lithiunz , and hydroget1 were used as solutes. The spacing between ice platelets or den-drites was experimenlally found proportzonal to the square root of freezing time when the freezing rate was constant from beginrting to end of solidification; the constant freezing rates were obtained during freezing of small droplets of aqueous soliitions surrounded by relatively large heat sinks. The transverse growth velocity of the ice platelets is proportional to the square root of the freezing rate. During unidirectional freezing from a constant temperuture chill, the solution at each location is subjected to a spectrum of freezirtg rates. The freezing rate is ini- FREEZING of solutions has been a subject of investigation in many disciplines. Aqueous solutions offer the advantage of transparenty; their study is of special significance due to the increasing interest in freezing processes for desalination. In addition dendritic solidification of aqueous solutions is in many ways analogous to freezing of metallic solutions. Aqueous solutions of most ionic salts freeze with tially low, passes through a maximum, and then decreases until solidificatimz is complete. The den-drite spacing increases linearly with the distance from the chill surface; it is inversely profiortional to the square root of the maximum freezing rate. The dendrite spacings in the two systems (the constanl freezing rate and the varying freezing rate) are equal, when the maximum freezing rate of the varying freezing rate system equals the average freezing vale of the constant freezing rate system. Mass transport in interdendritic liquid duriug solidificatiotz is analyzed; the experimental observations indicate that maximum concentration difference (AC) and supercooling (AT) in the interdendritic liquid are indepexdent of freezing rate. the separation of practically pure ice crystals from the liquid phase; with very few exceptions there is no solid solubility of ionic salts in ice. As an ice crystal grows there is rejection of solute from the moving interface into the liquid. Since the rejected solute moves primarily by diffusion, concentration gradients are established in the liquid. The highest solute concentrations are found in liquid immediately adjacent to liquid-solid interfaces and lowest concentrations farthest from the interface. Two-phase equilibrium obtains only at the solid-liquid interface; at other locations the liquid becomes supercooled because temperature gradients are negligible compared to concentration gradients. This is an immediate consequence of the fact that thermal diffusivities are considerably higher than mass diffusivities.

STUDIES relating to the behavior of coal toward oxygen may have for their purpose the determination of the fundamental factors that underlie spontaneous combustion, weathering and deterioration, and the general topic of storage, as well as those properties that have to do with the underlying principles of carbonization. There is also involved the possibility of developing information relating to the constitution of coal, or at least the chemical properties inherent in the type substances of which the coal is composed. It is the purpose here to record certain FIG. 1. results bearing on this latter idea of the chemical properties that characterize the main constituents of bituminous coal. The avidity of freshly mined coal for oxygen has long been known. What happens to the coal or to the oxygen is not so clear. Is the oxygen absorbed or chemically combined, and what are the conditions as to time, temperature, texture, or components that are most involved in the phenomenon?

IN plants casting electric-furnace ingots and converting them immediately into blooms, billets, slabs, bars or forgings, the criterion of quality performance is the soundness of the semifinished or finished product. When rejections are necessary, it is not always obvious whether the defects were caused by an unsound ingot or by improper treatment during the heating and forming operations. To evaluate the effects of the numerous factors involved, it is necessary to accumulate a large number of detailed observations and to analyze and interpret these data properly. Even after a thorough investigation has been conducted, it is impossible, in some cases, to isolate the cause of the defect and say that it is definitely the result of an unsound condition in the ingot or mistreatment of the ingot during further processing. Two factors that are extremely difficult to evaluate are the chemical composition of the steel and time from finish pour to charge in the soaking pits or "track time," and it is necessary to evaluate their combined effects before many other factors can be studied. Plain carbon, fine-grained steel in the range of 0.18 to 0.23 pct carbon, is very susceptible to cracking and the longer the elapsed time between the pouring of the ingots and stripping for charging into the soaking pits, the higher the billet rejections for cracks are found to be. IT will be recalled that when educational instruction for the mineral industry began at Freiberg, at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the original aim was to organize and systematize the procedures previously followed by young men in gaining familiarity with the technology then in use. There must have been many other ideas current, even then, as to just what a young man needed to learn in order to become capable of assuming responsibility for the supervision and direction of such technical work. The problem in Europe was decidedly different from that in nineteenth-century America, because some of the European mines were actually owned and operated by the governing authority and the others were supervised, regulated, and taxed by it. The American problem was the efficient performance of technical operations; the European one was regulatory supervision. It was natural, therefore, that in the development of educational processes in Europe stress was laid on those factors which conserved and protected the interests of the state. The study of mineralogy and geology, leading to correct judgments as to the workability and value of mineral deposits; assaying, which gave the means of quantitative measurements, as did surveying; chemistry, which furnished a better basis of understanding for assaying, mineralogy, and geology; and physics and mathematics, which are the bases for the understanding and efficient use of mechanical appliances, became the core of systematic instruction for the mineral industry. It was early recognized that men could learn more than was already known about all of these subjects and education took on that dichotomy which still characterizes it; the teaching of established knowledge to the unlearned, and that of extending of the bounds of knowledge, now loosely termed research, which after two and a half centuries of work still shows

BONE-ASH cupels have been used from time immemorial to absorb litharge, and accompanying oxides; in assaying. Doubtless, also, from the earliest days cupels have been most unjustly blamed for much poor assaying. It has long been known that the precious metals go with the litharge into the cupel. This occasions a loss of precious metals and reduces the results of the assay. There have been many investigations of cupels and the most diverse views have been expressed, the extremes being the statements of Lodge 1 that every cupel has some effect upon the loss in assaying telluride ores and of the Campredons2 that coarse and fine and hard and soft cupels all give the same loss of silver when cupelling the same weights. The truth lies between these statements and much nearer the latter. In a vast majority of cases the influence of the cupel is not dominant and is outweighed by other conditions, particularly the temperature of the cupelling bead. At the Spokane meeting of the Institute I presented a paper on the Assay and Valuation of Gold Bullion,3 which recorded the results of many hundreds of assays made in the Mint service under everyday commercial conditions, which of necessity differ from scientific conditions. In following this matter up, for the purpose of increasing the accuracy of our commercial methods of bullion assays, the question of the absorption of gold by the cupel was found to be a most important one and was taken up for investigation. In a lesser degree, the silver absorption is important and interesting, but at present it appears to be far more complicated and, while many figures showing silver absorption may be found through this paper, much further investigation is required to put the subject upon a satisfactory basis.

The heat-treatment of steels will not pass from the stage of an art into that of a science until the mechanism of the phase transformations associated therewith is thoroughly understood. Such an understanding will involve two distinct types of inquiry: (I) the direction of the transformation, (2) the speed of the transformation. The first type of inquiry, which involves only the equilibrium relations between the various phases in steel, is the subject of the present and of a succeeding article; the second type, which involves the kinetics of transformations, will be the subject of a later article. In order that a theory of equilibrium relations may give useful information, certain experimental data must be put into the theory. It is customary for these data to be of a thermal nature. In the system discussed herein—steel—such thermal data are very scarce. In medium-alloy steels another type of data might possibly be used. In these steels the concentration of solute is so low that it may be possible to use the approximation of dilute solutions, an approximation that leads to linear relationships. The unknown functions, or constants, may then be determined in some cases from the binary iron-alloy system and in other cases from the ternary iron-carbon-alloy system. From the functions, or constants, so determined may then be computed the equilibrium relations in more complex medium-alloy steels. In the present article this second approach is used, the necessary experimental data 'being obtained from the simple binary and ternary equilibrium diagrams. Fundamental Equations In this article are derived the equilibrium relations between the gamma, alpha and cementite phases. In these three phases all important alloying elements except carbon form substitutional solutions, each alloying atom occupying a potential site for an iron atom. Carbon, on the other hand, forms an interstitial solution. In the face-centered cubic gamma phase, the interstitial positions are at the center of the unit cube and at the centers of the cube edges. There are therefore four interstitial positions per unit cell, or one per iron atom. In the body-centered cubic alpha phase, the interstitial positions are probably at the face centers, and also at the centers of the edges, which are crystallographically equivalent to the face centers. There are therefore six interstitial positions per unit cube, or three per iron atom. In cementite, (Fe, Alloy)3C, the carbon atoms may. be regarded as filling all the lattice positions of a given type. The introduction of the fundamental the of equilibrium has presented the author with a quandary. These equations are formally so similar to other equations that have been derived1,2 for related systems that they may appear to some readers

The writer is continually asked, if this electricity:is all you claim for it, why do not the mines put it in and use it? The best answer was given by Mr. John Fox Tallis, in his paper read before the South Wales Institute of Engineers in 1888, namely, that the reasons are similar to those which have prevented the more general employment of other systems of haulage. Managers, as a rule, are " not experienced mechanical engineers; neither are they all versed in electrical engineering." It may be said that there are a number of " able and practical electrical engineers who could do the work; but those electrical engineers are not conversant with the practical routine of colliery work and are, therefore, placed at a disadvantage by not knowing the actual requirements of mining engineers, and the many little difficulties to be met and contended with in underground workings; and, until mining engineers have acquired the necessary knowledge and a confidence in electricity, it is only natural that they will continue to follow the beaten path." In the above remarks, Mr. Tallis has hit the nail on the head. In the face of the partial failure, financially, of the haulage-plant which the Union Electric Company of Philadelphia had set to work at Lykens Valley, Pa., an electric haulage-plant was installed near Scranton, Pa. The question was not whether electricity could do the work, but whether any electrical company knew enough about the practical difficulties to attack and overcome them. That point being settled, the remainder was easy. The contract for the Erie Colliery haulage-plant was signed in January, 1889. This colliery is owned by the Hillside Coal and Iron Company, Mr. Samuel Hines, President, and Captain W. A. May, Superintendent. The company has been using arc-lamps in its breakers for three years. It is the only company in the Lackawanna Valley which has had enterprise enough to do so. Consequently, it was acquainted

The scope of this paper will be limited to finished materials that contain a large preponderance (around 80 per cent or more) of magnesium oxide. The large and commercially important production of refractory dolomite and modified dolomites is not discussed here, and the production of magnesium basic carbonate for use as a heat insulator is barely mentioned. The discussion is confined mainly to magnesias produced in comparatively great quantity by direct processing of naturally occurring raw materials and hence excludes secondary or highly purified products such as pharmaceutical products or U.S.P. light and heavy calcined magnesias of commerce. Nomenclature The nomenclature of the magnesia products that will be discussed is somewhat confusing, in that it is customary in the trade to designate as "calcined magnesite" the materials that result from the calcining of magnesite to temperatures that remove the contained carbon dioxide. The finished product, therefore, is not magnesite at ali but simply a more or less pure magnesium oxide or magnesia. Furthermore, partly for statistical .and partly for commercial reasons, it has been customary, during recent years, to classify as "calcined magnesite" products that result from the heat-treatmerit of magnesium hydroxide precipitated from magnesium-containing brines; prod- ucts that, obviously, have no relationship whatever to magnesite. In the listing of magnesia-containing materials, tonnages of which are regularly reported by the Bureau of Mines, reports ordinarily are made under two headings: "caustic calcined" magnesite, in which all of the varieties of products treated at relatively low temperatures are lumped; and "dead-burned" magnesite, in which are included both high-purity and low-purity, and particularly both high-iron and irow-iron, materials that have been so heat-treated that the magnesium oxide occurs predominantly as crystalline periclase— materials used almost entirely for refractory purposes. In 1940 the apparent domestic consumption of "caustic calcined" magnesite was approximatcly 17,000 tons, "bout 95 Per cent of which was produced in this country. The apparent consumption of "dead-burned" magnesite was approximately 172,000 tons, some 82 per cent of which was domestically produced. In both total quantity and percentage of material produced within the United States, these figures are record highs for manY Years past. Utilization As indicated by these figures, the major tonnage outlet for magnesia is the refractories industry, in which magnesia is employed principally in three ways: (1) as dead-burned grain magnesite for the construction and maintenance of the hearths Or bottomS of basic open-hearth furnaces; (2) in the form of refractory magnesite bricks and shapes; and (3) as a chemical

HE purpose of this chapter is to present a general outline of the basic open-hearth process for the benefit of students, practicing open-hearth operators, and metallurgists who wish to review the subject. The discussion is limited to a description of the sequence and purpose of the operations, illustrated by data and examples. Subsequent chapters deal with more detailed and fundamental studies of the subject. The function of the basic open-hearth furnace is to convert various types of ferrous material into finished steel of given composition and quality. In comparison with other steelmaking methods, the basic open-hearth process is one of the most versa- tile, both from the standpoint of the raw materials that can be used and the types of steel that can be produced. The process can be considered as a sequence involving melting, refining, and deoxidation. With some types of liquid-metal charges, the melting stage is not present, but refining and deoxidation in varying degrees are fundamental features of the process. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF BASIC OPEN-HEARTH PROCESS The first consideration in open-hearth practice is the type of charge on which the operation is based. This consists of three components-fluxing, oxidizing, and metallic materials. Fluxes. In the basic process the fluxing material is primarily lime, added in the form of either limestone (CaC03) or burnt lime (CaO). This is supplemented by magnesia (MgO) and lime from the furnace bottom and banks. The function of these fluxes is to form a slag with the silica (SiO2) , manganese oxide (MnO), iron oxides (FeO and Fe2O3), and phosphorus oxide (P2O5) that are produced by the oxidation of varying amounts of the silicon, manganese, iron, and phosphorus in the charge during melting and refining. The slag, composed of the basic fluxes and the neutral and acid oxides, floats on top of the steel bath when the charge is melted. In an earlier paper1 we discussed a simple, rapid method of taking samples of liquid steel and analyzing them for oxygen, which, though possibly not absolutely accurate (as is likewise true of all other methods), certainly yields results that are satisfactorily consistent. Accordingly, samples from hundreds of heats ill different shops were analyzed for oxygen, with results sufficient in number to be handled statistically and permit estimation of some general trends. Measurements were made in acid as well as in basic open hearths, throughout the refining period, to learn how stirring, blocking, adding ore or lime or sand, affects the oxygen content of the bath; we also followed the changes brought about by tapping, teeming, and deoxidizing. Some of these results, discussed in an earlier paper,2 bring out the dominant role of the carbon-oxygen reaction in regulating degree of oxidation both of metal and of slag, also the marked variability of concentration of dissolved oxygen [0] in excess of that which would be in equilibrium with carbon and with carbon monoxide at a partial pressure of one atmosphere. As a logical beginning on this complex problem, we take up in the present paper the variability of this excess oxygen, A[O], when other factors are as constant as they ever are in open-hearth operation; namely, toward the end of the refining period, when the bath may be regarded as in the comparatively steady state it approaches in absence of disturbing factors. This condition was chosen because by that time the significant reactions, except carbon oxidation, between slag and metal have come to substantial equilibrium; this facilitates interpretation of the complex situation and thus perinits more definite conclusions to be drawn. This excess concentration of oxygen, A[O], in the metal is needed, of course, to make the steelmaking process go at a reasonable rate; alternatively it may be regarded as a measure of the virtual pressure increment above one atmosphere, or of the degree of supersaturation, of carbon monoxide in the metal. According to our measurements, the excess concentration A[0] in liquid steel varies from about 0.009 to 0,035 per cent oxygen by weight. It is quite sensitive to change of conditions, being altered temporarily by operations such as stirring with green poles, additions of ore, lime, or sand; but as the disturbance works itself out, it resumes a level within the intermediate range characteristic of the steady state. In an earlier paper1 we discussed a simple, rapid method of taking samples of liquid steel and analyzing them for oxygen, which, though possibly not absolutely accurate (as is likewise true of all other methods), certainly yields results that are satisfactorily consistent. Accordingly, samples from hundreds of heats ill different shops were analyzed for oxygen, with results sufficient in number to be handled statistically and permit estimation of some general trends. Discontinuous precipitation in a iron can occur by at least two different mechanisms. These mechanisms are compared, using observations made on an Fe-22 at. pct Zn alloy and an Fe-19.5 at. pct Mo alloy. In the Fe-Zn alloy, precipitation began on grain boundaries. These boundaries moved into the supersaturated solid solution, providing nucleation sites and an easy path for diffusion. The precipitated phase pew as lamellae, perpendicular to the PRECIPITATION reactions are called discontinuous if the nucleation of particles does not occur on individual sites in the supersaturated matrix.' In discontinuous precipitation, nucleation and growth occur on a reaction front that moves into the supersaturated solution and leaves a two-phase aggregate behind. The term cellular precipitation2 has also been used, but the term autocatalytic precipi- moving reaction front. The orientation of the depleted iron differed from that of the supersaturated iron. In the Fe-Mo alloy the growing precipitate particles apparently created dislocations in the growth front which served as nucleation sites. The precipitate grew on (110) planes of the iron, and growth occurred through volume diffision. The depleted iron retained the orientation of the supersaturated solid solution. tation seems to describe the nature of such reactions best. The basic effect of such a precipitation mechanism in a solid is that it is able to move or create sites that can catalyze nucleation. Such sites can be grain boundaries and dislocations. A mechanism of autocatalytic precipitation must, therefore, include some rational process by which a grain boundary may move into the supersaturated matrix or by which dislocations may be generated in front of the reaction. THE Salt Creek oil field in Natrona County, Wyo., is the largest pool that has been found in the Rocky Mountain region and one of the largest in the United States. Many features of its production records are of peculiar interest, because of the unusual slowness with which it has been developed. This paper is published by the permission of the Midwest Refining Co., whose records have been freely drawn upon. Many mem¬bers of the Midwest organization have assisted in the collection of the material, but Messrs. F. E. Wood and L. E. Smith have been particularly helpful. The Salt Creek oil field is situated on a great dome with a closure of about 1500 ft., which rises at the northern end of a long anticline extending north-northwest by south-southeast for fully 25 miles. The productive area includes parts of townships 39 and 40 north and ranges 78 and 79 west of the sixth principal meridian. The Teapot oil field occupies a minor dome at about the center of the same anticline and adjoins the Salt Creek oil field on the southeast. The Teapot Naval Reserve includes the Teapot Dome and about 760 acres of the Salt Creek dome. In this paper, the Salt Creek oil field will be considered as' including all of the dome, except that part which lies within the Teapot Naval Reserve and the area west of the dome where oil is produced from shale crevices.

THE lower cost of producing oil from naturally flowing wells compared with pro-duction costs accruing from artificial lifting methods has stimulated much research, with the joint purpose of extending the natural flowing life of wells and of increas-ing the productivity of small wells. The laboratory investigation described herein was made to determine the effect of a slotted liner on the pressure gradient in the vicinity of the wall of a flowing well. Flow restrictions caused by the liner induce energy losses between the oil-bearing for-mation and the inside of the liner, which may be reduced by improved liner design, and thereby the flow capacity of wells may be increased. These losses have been evalu-ated for rectangular slots of different sizes, and means are suggested for reducing them. The dearth of information concerning the nature of the flow of fluids from uncon-solidated sands through small openings in the walls of pipes-as represented by the flow of oil from an oil sand into a slotted liner-is acknowledged. Although the bene-fits to be realized by operators through the use of optimum liners is just beginning to be recognized generally, Coberly1 in 1937 pointed out that the functioning of screen casing is an important factor in the pro-duction of oil. From his study on the selection of size of oil strings for wells in California, Parks2 concluded, in part, that the perforated section of the oil string de-serves continued study, especially with respect to the selection of perforations. The growing use of gravel packing result-ing from certain research findings lends even more significance to the problem of selecting optimum liners, as the application of these methods usually requires slotted liners or other kinds of perforated liners. The present study was made to obtain further information for the guidance of engineers and operators in selecting slotted liners and to develop a laboratory method that may be used in analyzing possible pressure conditions surrounding most types of perforated casings used in producing oil wells, so that the present inadequate fund of knowledge on this important subject may be expanded.

LITERATURE data1'3 have suggested that the resolved shear stress necessary to initiate slip in a particular slip system in tungsten single crystals is strongly dependent on the tensile orientation of the crystals. This orientation dependence is contrary to the critical resolved shear stress criterion. Because the Schmid factors for slip on particular {110}( I l l), {112}(Ill), or {123}(111) slip systems in a (100) oriented tungsten crystal are virtually identical to the respective Schmid factors for a (110) oriented crystal, slip should initiate on the same system in both orientations, independent of the values of the critical resolved shear stresses. Thus, it would be expected that, for a critical resolved shear stress model to hold, the proportional-limit stress for these two orientations must be similar. The expectation of similar proportional -limit stresses has not been borne out by reported experimental observations. Rose et nl.' reported that the proportional-limit stress for crystals near the (110) orientation was 92,000 psi, approximately three times that of (100) oriented crystals (31,000 psi). Garlick and probst2 reported greater than a fourfold difference. Most recently, Beardmore and ~ull~ examined tungsten crystals with orientations along the edge of the standard stereographic triangle and showed a gradual increase in proportional-limit stress from 28,000 psi for the (100) orientation to 93,000 psi for the (110) orientation. Again, the difference was more than threefold. As has been emphasized by these investigators, the apparent gross variation of proportional-limit stress with orientation precludes any meaningful analysis of slip mechanics using a simple critical resolved shear stress relation. The purpose of the present communication is to report that, by use of refined strain-measuring techniques, the proportional-limit stresses for the (100) and (110) orientations are quite similar. Obviously, to determine accurately the value of the proportional-limit stress, which is by definition the stress at which nonlinear stress-strain behavior first occurs, the method of measuring strain must be capable of high accuracy. The investigators cited used as the measured elongation the crosshead displacement of the tensile machine. This method, however, introduces extraneous strain contributions from the load train. Because these extraneous contributions are considerable in the initial portions of loading (as has been well-documented in the literature) the proportional-limit stress measurement, dependent on the deviation of a line from linearity, can be significantly affected. During the course of a recent study, room-temperature strain was measured directly on several (100)-and (110)-oriented tensile specimens axially oriented within 5 deg of the desired direction. Each specimen was fitted with two foil strain gages mounted on opposite sides of the 0.08-in.-diam reduced section. The tensile specimens were loaded at a crosshead speed of 0.01 in. per min on an Instron Universal Testing Machine. Strain was monitored through an external bridge circuit in which the specimen strain gages comprised two arms. The bridge output was recorded against the applied load. A strain of 2 x 10"" could be readily detected by this method. Some specimens were subjected to conventional loading while the load for others was cycled between zero and continually increasing values until the first deviation from linearity was observed. The results of these methods were similar, and the stress at which nonlinear behavior occurred was considered the proportional-limit stress. The proportional-limit stresses measured in this study are approximately 5000 and 6500 psi for the ( 100) - and ( 110) -oriented crystals, respectively, a range of values almost a magnitude less than those reported previously. Representative curves are presented in Fig. 1. Because of the nature of the measurements made, the point of departure of a line from linearity is often debatable. While the load-strain curve for the (100) -oriented crystals made a relatively abrupt deviation from linearity, the curve for the (110) -oriented crystal was more gradual, so that the actual point of tangency may be at a lower load than reported.
