The precipitation of carbides from an alloy containing 33 pct Ni, 21 pct Cr, balance iron, was investigated electron microscopically by means of extraction replicas and thinned metal foils. Annealing temperatures ranged from 565°to 870°C and up to several thousand hours. M23C6 precipitated in pain boundaries, incoherent and coherent twin boundaries in that sequence. The orientation relationship between carbides and austenite matrix was determined and correlated with the morphology of the carbides and with the type of boundary in which precipitation occurred. In large-angle grain boundaries, as well as in coherent twin boundaries, the carbides had the same orientation as one of the adjacent pains. These carbides formed sheets of individual flakes with shapes related to the orientation of the boundary. In incoherent twin boundaries carbides precipitated in ribbons composed of pavallel rods. An unidentified subcarbide was found to precede precipitation of M23C6 in these boundaries. The M 23 C6 rods had a kind of fiber texture with (110) parallel to the long dimension of the rods and ribbon, and with orientations of both of the adjacent twin-related austenite crystals Predominant in the texture of the carbide. A hard sphere crystal model has been used to discuss orientation and morphology of the carbides in terms of free volume and vacancies available in the boundaries. A number of papers have dealt with the morphology of chromium carbide (M23 C6) precipitated in austenitic stainless steels.1"7 In all these investigations, the carbides were examined in the electron microscope by means of extraction replicas. With this technique, the carbides retain the spatial distribution they had in the bulk sample. However, since the matrix is dissolved in the process, the particles can turn in an unpredictable way; and the orientation relationship between matrix and carbides cannot be established. In this paper the results of studies on extraction replicas and on thinned metal foils are reported. These studies were undertaken to determine the matrix-to-car bide orientation relationship, and to correlate the orientation of the carbides with their morphology. PROCEDURE The material used was an austenitic alloy with 33 pct Ni, 21 pct Cr, balance iron, containing approximately 0.05 pct C. Coupons of 1.25-mm sheet were first solution-annealed at 1050°C for 15 min and air-cooled. Then, to precipitate the carbides, samples were isothermally annealed in the range from 565" to 870°C for times up to several thousand hours. All further specimen-preparation procedures were carried out after the final anneal. Carbon extraction replicas from polished and etched surfaces were made with 10 pct bromine in methyl alcohol.' Thin foils were prepared from punched-out 3-mm-diam disksg which fit into the electron-microscope holder. The disks were prethinned by grinding to approximately 0.5 mm thickness, and then electro-polished in a polytetrafluoroethylene holder1' with a solution containing 5 pct perchloric acid in acetic acid to which 10 g per 1 Cro3 and 5 g per 1 nickel chloride were added (etchant modified from that of Briers et al."). This solution dissolves neither the carbides nor the austenite around the carbides preferentially. By using extraction replicas, electron micrographs and selected-area electron-diffraction patterns were taken from the same carbide arrays. By using thin foils, electron micrographs were made from a grain boundary area containing carbides. Electron-diffraction patterns were then taken from the same area and from each of the adjacent grains separately. In this manner, the orientation of each grain could be determined without interference by the carbide pattern. A peculiarity of extraction replicas should be pointed out. After the matrix is etched away, the carbide arrays float freely in the etching and washing solutions, and are held in place only at the anchoring points in the carbon replica. When the replica is picked up with a screen the carbide arrays tend to flip to one side. Thus, while the surface features are preserved, the original arrangement of the carbides may severely and unpredictably be disturbed whenever the specimen contains large amounts of interconnected carbides. Nevertheless, it is possible to correlate the different morphologies of the carbides with the type of boundary in which they have precipitated. RESULTS 1) Extraction Replicas. Fig. 1 shows that the grain boundaries usually are curved, multicornered surfaces of random orientation. The coherent twin boundaries (which are (111) planes) cut a grain into parallel slices. Incoherent twin boundaries occur at the ends and on the steps of twins and are often narrow, parallel-sided strips which are much longer than they are wide. Different morphologies can clearly be distinguished for the M23Ce carbides precipitated in each of these types of boundaries, and agree well with those observed by kinzel.2 The kinetics of this precipitation has been investigated." The first carbides precipitate in junctions of three grain boundaries and fan out from there into the adjoining boundary surfaces, Fig. 2(a). INTRODUCTION Studies relating to the Oakville aquifer as presented in this report and by Henry et al. (this volume), are part of a larger , comprehensive examination of regional and local stratigraphic, hydro- geologic, and geochemical parameters within the Oakville Formation recently completed by the Bureau of Economic Geology. The Oakville serves both as a major Gulf Coast aquifer and an important uranium host (Fig. 1). Regional and local controls on hydrodynamics and hydrochemistry have important implications for hydrochemical exploration, the establishment of premining baseline parameters, and the design of post mining restoration procedures. Investigations of the Oakville Formation were de- signed for the purpose of determining the response of the aquifer to uranium extraction and were funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under grant numbers R-805357-01 and R-805357-02. Physical Stratigraphy Physical stratigraphic analysis shows that the Oakville Sandstone, a lithostratigraphic unit deposited by a major coastal-plain f luvial system, consists of five mappable, component depositional elements (Figs. 2 and 3). Each major component element is the product of one or more rivers traversing the Miocene coastal plain. In turn, each river possessed a unique sediment load, discharge characteristics, and source terrane. Consequently, each element exhibits distinguishing geometric and compositional parameters that potentially influence the flux and hydrochemical evolution of contained ground waters (Galloway, Henry, and Smith, in preparation). The Oakvil le Sandstone, as mapped and interpreted as a lithostratigraphic unit in the study area, corresponds closely to the Jasper aquifer system, an equally well-defined Gulf Coastal Plain hydrogeologic unit (Baker, 1978). Principal surrounding hydrogeologic units include the underlying Catahoula confining system, the Jasper aquifer system itself, and the overlying Burkeville confining system (lower Fleming mudstones). The Evangeline aquifer system includes much of the Fleming Formation. The Jasper aquifer system is bounded above and below by relatively less transmissive, finer grained confining systems, although absolute transmissivity varies greatly within both the Jasper and confining units. Lithostratigraphic and hydrogeologic boundaries coincide almost exactly within the Hebbronville flu- vial axis (Fig. 3). Correspondence of geologic and hydrostratigraphic boundaries is good within the George West axis; farther to the northeast the correlation of the Jasper aquifer with units mapped as Oakville Formation diverges to varying degrees. A complete analysis of these trends and a study of the depositional facies comprising the Oakvillle are included in Galloway, Henry, and Smith (in preparation). REGIONAL HYDROGEOLOGY The stratigraphic, compositional, and structural framework of the Oakville Formation and the mosaic of interrelated depositional facies that are combined in this framework play a key role in defining the hydrogeology of the Oakville. Furthermore, a combination of climate and hydrogeology, as well as past and present socioeconomic conditions, has determined water and land use patterns within the region of Oakville outcrop. Utilization of Oakville Ground Water Stratigraphic control for determining which wells produce ground water from the Oakville aquifer was established by preparing structural and isopach maps of the Oakville Formation using regional electric log cross sections. Surface elevation and screened interval data (or total well depth, if open-hole completion techniques were used) from each water well, combined with the stratigraphic data, allowed accurate assessment of the producing aquifer for individual wells. INTRODUCTORY A COMPLETE list of the elements as given for 1915 includes 18 that melt above 1,700° C. There does not exist one complete thermal equilibrium diagram for any pair of these 18 elements. Several of these elements have been combined, in relatively small proportions, with metals of lower melting point: e.g., tungsten, molybdenum, and vanadium, in steels, or with nickel and cobalt; but of this refractory group, platinum is the only one that has been extensively studied in this connection. When one considers that, with few exceptions, the industries have made use of alloys to the exclusion of pure .metals, it is reasonable to expect that alloys of this refractory group will invade fields in which the pure metals have found little application. The past neglect of this class of metals has, no doubt, been partly due to the rarity of some of them, for even though alloys of very valuable properties should be developed, their cost, unless in exceptional applications, would be prohibitive. There is also a well-founded reluctance to undertake research involving very high temperatures which, in the case of most of these elements, must be accompanied by an inert atmosphere as well. This combination of high temperatures* and control of atmosphere within the heating chamber of any furnace of present design is a difficult problem. It is the purpose of this paper to give results,1 of an investigation of one binary series of this group, in which methods were employed that avoided the usual difficulties accompanying high-temperature alloy investigation.

Experiments were conducted on magnesium monocrystals in order to collect quantitative information on the mechanisms which limit the rate of basal slip. Using critical shear stress and creep data, activation energies for creep at low aid at high temperatures were derived. The activation energy at low temperatures is the same as that for jog formation and the activation energy at high temperatures agrees with that for climb. COTTRELL has suggested that at low temperatures, the expansion of dislocation loops under stresses near the yield strength is limited by the rate at____ which the expanding loops can cut the "forest" of dislocations passing through the glide planes.' On the basis of this mechanism, seeger2 has derived expressions for low-temperature creep and for the relation of flow stress of single crystals to temperature. In the work reported here, the authors have performed experiments designed to obtain quantitative data on the physical properties of the dislocation intersection mechanisms operating during basal slip in pure magnesium monocrystals. Some mixtures of sulphide and oxide ores from the Tintic district in Utah are of a sufficiently good grade to be shipped to the smelter without beneficiation. In mining this type of ore, however, a material tonnage of ore of a similar composition but of lower grade is obtained. It is a question of economics whether such ore should be shipped with a certainty of a small return or concentrated if that would yield a sufficiently increased return to amortize plant construction and upkeep and yield a higher rate of profit than at present. It may be assumed that the tonnage of this borderline ore is constantly increasing and that eventually it will attain such proportions as to justify plans for milling on a relatively large scale. Under existing conditions, the producer of mixed sulphide and oxide ores is not greatly concerned about the physical characteristics of his ore or of its mineralogical complexities, since his contract with the smelter calls for payment on the basis of chemical analysis. When concentration is contemplated an entirely different picture is presented. Percentages of valuable metal content must then be con-sidered in terms of minerals, for it is in the form of minerals that recoveries are made and losses sustained. In describing the performance of a given flotation mill and reagent combination, it may be stated as a generality that a specific percentage recovery of valuable elements is made. Technically, however, the concentrator is really constructed and the reagents are selected to recover the valuable minerals. These considerations must be given prominence in discussing borderline ores from the Tintic district because of their physical characteristics and mineralogical composition. Because of these peculiarities they may be justly termed complex, since their lead, silver, and copper contents are each represented by two or more minerals of different chemical composition and presenting widely divergent physical properties. THE term "bleaching clay" or "bleaching earth," as used in the oil industries, refers to clays that in their natural state, or after chemical or physical activation, have the capacity for adsorbing coloring matter from oil. There are three common types of bleaching clays: fuller's earth, activated clays, and activated bauxite. Fuller's earth, or naturally active clay, is prepared from bentonites that possess natural activity. It is not activated commercially; in fact, earths of this type ordinarily do not respond satisfactorily to acid activation. Fuller's earth is prepared in pulverized as well as granular form for use in the contacting and percolation processes, respectively. Acid-activated clays also are of bentonitic origin. The basic raw clay, however, is of a type that has a very low natural activity but is highly activable by treatment with mineral acid. Commercial acid-activated clays generally possess several times the decolorizing power (bleaching efficiency) of the best quality of fuller's earth. The former are prepared commercially only in the pulverized grade because of the difficulties in obtaining a satisfactory granular product, and hence are used only in the contact process. Activated bauxite is made by heat-treating bauxite ore, which in its natural state has very little natural activity. The commercial product is prepared in granular form for use in the percolation process on petroleum oils. For the most part, bleaching clay is used commercially in the decolorization of animal, vegetable and petroleum oils, fats and waxes. It is applied in two ways: (1) by the percolation method and (2) by the contacting method. Percolation refers to the passage of oil through a bed of granular clay whereas contacting refers to direct agitation of oil and pulverized clay followed by removal of the clay from the oil by filtration. 2.2-1. Need for Acquisition Operating Plan. In planning a trip by automobile, a road map is procured and studied. Travel by plane suggests detailed examination of route maps, weather charts, and navigation charts. Planning for construction of a factory, office building, shopping center, or housing subdivision envisages working out a complete development plan. Household needs arc generally jotted clown on a shopping list, with each item checked off as it is purchased. In turn, forwarding of any surface mining project should be undertaken only after an acquisition operating plan has been set out, by checklist, under three general headings: 1. Public relations-a check list setting out applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, and the office, board, commission, and individuals having responsibility for licensing, administration, and enforcement of each such law or regulation. 2. Land requirements-a complete check list encompassing all aspects of land acquisition, ownership, management, control, and disposition, with applicable laws. 3. Water requirements-a full check list embracing all aspects of water development and control, acquisition of rights to use, manner of use, and manner of disposition, with applicable laws and regulations. 2.2-2. Public Relations Aspects of Operating Plan. NEED TO DETERMINE APPLICABLE LAWS. The laws and regulations governing acquisition of land and mineral rights, water and water rights, and the use and control of those rights, vary so much from state to state that one cardinal rule must govern all preplanning: determine applicable Federal, State, and local law at the outset. Changing conditions in the past century have resulted in a multiplication at all levels of governmental agencies interested in, and having responsibility for, acquisition, use, control, and disposition of minerals and mineral lands. The same is true of waters and water rights found in, brought to, or discharged from, the operating site.

HOISTS for metal mines are seldom designed for H one particular depth. They are intended for an ultimate load and depth with a given speed but are first used to hoist from a shallower depth, gradually working to the ultimate as development progresses. Sometimes the mine is not worked on the upper levels because of the kind and grade of ore, the mining of which depends on market conditions. In this case the hoist may be used in the same working shift to lift ore, for example, from the 1200 and the 4400-ft level. This means that the safety factor of the rope should be considered not only when it hoists from the greatest depth, but also when it hoists from the upper levels. According to present safety factor standards, a hoisting rope can have ample safety margin when hoisting from the lower or lowest level and still be shy of sufficient safety margin when hoisting from the upper levels. This will be shown by curves presented in this paper.

USE of a hydrometallurgical approach to the oxidation of sulfide ores and extraction of metals therefrom may have advantages over the more common smelting techniques when a low grade deposit is difficult to concentrate or the subsequent separation of metals, coexisting in the ore, is laborious by any known smelting operation. For economic reasons, the most promising oxidants are either atmospheric oxygen or electric power. The use of oxygen, or air under pressure, has recently been revised. Pyrrhotite has been converted to iron oxide and elementary sulfur' and a variety of sulfides have been treated by Forward and co-workers.2-4 Generally sulfate is the end form of the sulfur but with galena in an acid medium, elementary sulfur can be formed." For economic reasons chlorine and ferric iron salts are about the only possible alternatives to the atmosphere as oxidizing agents for base metal sulfides. If aqueous solutions of chlorine or ferric iron are employed, the reduction products can be oxidized electrolytically in situ and used again, thus acting as catalysts for electric power as oxidant. The use of ferric salts for this purpose is established hydrometallurgical practicea but, although chlorine gas has been employed in the dry state at an elevated temperature, its use in aqueous solution at or near room temperature has not found favor. The reaction of chlorine water with the soluble sulfide ion has been studied by several workers,7-9 and both sulfate and elemental sulfur are found as end products, the latter being favored by the presence of a low concentration of oxidant relative to that of sulfide in solutions of about pH 9 to 10. Of direct bearing on the work in hand are an early American patent" and a recent Austrian patent." The former advocates stirring powdered ore with an aqueous solution of ferric chloride chlorine oxides and chlorine. In the latter it is claimed that both metal and sulfur can be obtained by electrolysis, in a diaphragm cell, of a metal ore slurry in brine. Details in these patents are scant and no data or explanation is given for the mechanism of the reaction which, in the Austrian work, is attributed to the (unlikely) action of nascent chlorine at the anode surface. No mention is made of possible differences in behaviour between various ores. Apparatus A complication encountered when working with chlorine water is that a serious loss of chlorine occurs by gas partitioning unless an enclosed system is used and any air space in the apparatus is kept very small and constant. Arrangements were made, therefore, to take out samples for analysis without letting air into the system to replace the liquid removed. For convenience in studying a heterogeneous reaction the apparatus was so designed that a reproducible controlled stirring rate could be maintained and the ratio of surface area of ore to volume of solution was approximately constant throughout any experiment. The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1. The ground ore was placed in the horizontal cylindrical vessel, A, of about 1 liter capacity, heated by a constant temperature circulating bath pumping water through the concentric jacket, B. By adding chro-mate to this water, an ultraviolet radiation filter effectively surrounded the reaction vessel, greatly reducing any possible photochemical decomposition of chlorine solutions. Stirring was effected by glass paddles, C, attached by an axle to a magnet which was rotated by another powerful Alnico magnet, D, outside the glass end, this magnet being itself rotated by an electric motor electronically controlled to constant speed. Speed could be varied from about 150 to 900 rpm and was measured and held to within 1 pct of a given value. The end of the reaction vessel remote from the stirring magnet was closed by another one-ended glass cylinder, E, connected by thin polyethylene bellows, F, clamped by screw clamps and watertight rubber gaskets to the main vessel. Through E, a glass electrode and calomel electrode projected into the solution and a hypodermic syringe pierced a small bung and allowed acid or alkaline to be added to maintain a constant pH. By pushing the fully extended bellows until the two cylinders touched, from 50 to 100 ml of solution could be forced out through a sintered disk into the three-way tap system, G, either to waste (for flushing purposes) or up into a 10 ml burette where the solution could subsequently be measured out for analysis. The ore samples were introduced at H, the tube being stoppered by a thermometer of —1 to +52ºC range, graduated to 0.1°C intervals. At least three million ounces of placer gold has been mined from hundreds of deposits in the Southwest since the 1600's. Nevada, the most productive state, produced about 1,700,000 oz. Most of the placers are in accumulations of unsorted, coarse, angular gravel in gullies, dry washes, and on hill- sides. The gold is mixed with debris from the adjacent bedrock and is typically concentrated at or near bedrock or on clay layers or caliche-cemented gravels above bedrock. The most extensive and productive placers are thick accumulations of debris in well-defined stream or gully channels, in alluvial fans at the edges of the range fronts, or as thick residuum on hillsides. With very few exceptions, the gold has been transported only a very short distance from the source. Numerous small high-grade gold-quartz veinlets, rather than single large lode deposits, are by far the most common source of placer gold. Most placer mining consisted of small-scale one-or two-man operations using rockers, pans, and sluices when water was available and dry-washing machines when it was not. Where gravels were deep the miner would dig shafts to bedrock and drift along the paystreak. Large-scale operations in the major districts utilized floating or stationary dredges or, more rarely, hydraulicking to mine extensive deposits. An adequate supply of water for efficient concentration of gold has always been a major problem in the Southwest. To overcome this problem, difficult and sometimes ingenious techniques were used-pipelines to carry water for miles to the placer area were constructed, or gravel was hauled to central washing plants where water was available; numerous designs of dry-washing machines were invented. In some districts, attempts to mine the gravels by large- scale operations failed because the gravels were too wet for dry concentration methods, and no water was available for wet methods; or, when water was available, the gravels were too porous to retain sufficient water in the dredging pond.

THE study of the possibility of effecting a lower cost in the manu-facture of pig iron reveals the importance of the ever present question of slag chemistry and volume. Factors that determine slag chemistry and volume are the impurities in the ore available, the ash-sulphur content of the coke, and a flux material necessary to promote removal of sulphur. Of these, the ores present by far the major source of impurities and what may prove to be the lowest practical slag volume with desired chemistry in one locality may be considered low or high in some other center of iron manufacture. The Chicago district is not only blessed with ores of high quality, but with excellent coke and flux materials as well. It is the intent of this paper to discuss slag problems at the South Works only, where burdens consist of Mesabi ores, Michigan stone, and coke ranging from 7 to 9 per cent ash and containing an average of 0.57 per cent sulphur. Early in the development of modern blast-furnace practice, the con-sideration of slags was secondary to the many adjustments of mechanical difficulties, such as furnace lines, stock distribution, stove design for obtaining higher blast temperatures, improved chemical segregation and size of raw materials. Furnace operators, after making these improve-ments, turned their attention to the study of other refinements in practice, of which slag chemistry appeared to be the most important. It is only within the last two decades that operators have become familiar with the various aspects of slag compositions. The industry, while rather slow in its recognition, is indebted to such investigators as Rankin,1 Wright,1 Feild,2 Royster,2 McCaffery,3 Kinney,4 Holbrook,5 and Joseph5, whose researches concerning the elimination of sulphur within the blast furnace and the effect of slag composition upon melting point, viscosity, and desulphurizing power have established criteria for the selection of slags of the requisite quality.

It has long been known that plain high-carbon steels may be susceptible to graphiti-zation below the A1 critical, but no data have been available to indicate what factors cause and tend to inhibit graphite formation. Two recent publicationsl,2 have shown that the factors controlling graphitization below the A1 are different from those operating above the A1 inversion where commercial graphitization of malleable iron begins. Furthermore, for plain high-carbon steels graphitization below the critical point does not appear to be related to ordinary chemical analyses. Many years ago it was recorded3 that the rate of graphitization at subeutectoid temperature is not a maximum just below the A1 critical, but at some lower temperature, which Austin and Norris have shown to be about 670°C. Indeed, work done in our laboratory has demonstrated that it is impossible to spheroidize certain steels in the temperature range of 650° to 710°C. without the formation of considerable amounts of graphite. However, if the temperature is maintained just below the A1 (720°C.) these same steels may be completely sphe-roidized at constant temperature. In previous studiesl,2,4 on I per cent plain carbon steels graphitization was encountered during prolonged tempering. The limited number of steels studied did not provide sufficiellt data to permit adequate study of the factors controlling this graphitization. Accordingly, a limited statistical investigation was undertaken, utilizing 18 steels of similar chemical analyses, furnished by four steel companies, who also supplied information regarding the history of manufacture. An extensive program of research is being carried out on these steels, including the effect of pretreatment and atmosphere on the nature and extent of graphitization, and the possible correlation of graphitization with such characteristic properties as hardenability, grain size and mechanical behavior. Greater depth of exploration drill holes and increasing cost of drilling have been principal factors in reviving interest on the Mar-quette Iron Range in controlled directional drill-hole deflection. This deflection is obtained by the application of the Hall-Row wedging technique. Modifications were made in the technique and equipment in the effort to simplify and strengthen the procedure. The practice is similar in many respects to the oil well type of deflection with a whipstock. Introduction The deflection of diamond drill holes by wedging was a widespread practice in Canada, South Africa and the Lake Superior District as early as 1907 to 1920. Several basic schemes were used, with local variations.' The deflecting wedge assembly was the idea of Mr. Welldon and Mr. Payne-Gallwey operating under the supervision of Mr. William Gallagher of Johannesburg, South Africa. All schemes employed some means of plugging the old hole. A footpiece of various styles was placed in the hole on the plug. In some methods, the orientation of this piece was determined before placing the deflecting wedge. Some techniques permitted continuing the hole the same size after wedging, while others necessitated a size reduction. Interest in wedging diamond drill holes in the Lake Superior District waned after 1920. The Hall-Row patented system for deflecting holes was developed in Canada about 1918.2 Interest centers on the wedging process for the following applications: 1. Maintaining a given course and inclination of the drill hole. 2. By passing an obstruction in a drill hole. 3. Resampling an ore body. 4. Exploring an area overlain by surface conditions not favorable to drilling. During the period of 1913 to 1920, The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. used the wedging technique under a variety of conditions. In general, the practice was not applicable again until 1946. Meanwhile the Hall-Row system of drill-hole deflection survived years of application as the best technique available. In the intervening years, our depth of exploration has increased as well as the overall cost of drilling. As exploration becomes deeper, there is the possible economy of cutting the ore body at a moderate distance from the parent hole without redrilling from surface. Thus a branch hole started near the mid-point of a deep hole can reach the ore horizon at a considerable offset from the parent hole. This permits a greater interval between surface drill holes as drilling becomes deeper. Our interest revived in the subject and a wedging program was initiated. It has long been known that plain high-carbon steels may be susceptible to graphiti-zation below the A1 critical, but no data have been available to indicate what factors cause and tend to inhibit graphite formation. Two recent publicationsl,2 have shown that the factors controlling graphitization below the A1 are different from those operating above the A1 inversion where commercial graphitization of malleable iron begins. Furthermore, for plain high-carbon steels graphitization below the critical point does not appear to be related to ordinary chemical analyses. Many years ago it was recorded3 that the rate of graphitization at subeutectoid temperature is not a maximum just below the A1 critical, but at some lower temperature, which Austin and Norris have shown to be about 670°C. Indeed, work done in our laboratory has demonstrated that it is impossible to spheroidize certain steels in the temperature range of 650° to 710°C. without the formation of considerable amounts of graphite. However, if the temperature is maintained just below the A1 (720°C.) these same steels may be completely sphe-roidized at constant temperature. In previous studiesl,2,4 on I per cent plain carbon steels graphitization was encountered during prolonged tempering. The limited number of steels studied did not provide sufficiellt data to permit adequate study of the factors controlling this graphitization. Accordingly, a limited statistical investigation was undertaken, utilizing 18 steels of similar chemical analyses, furnished by four steel companies, who also supplied information regarding the history of manufacture. An extensive program of research is being carried out on these steels, including the effect of pretreatment and atmosphere on the nature and extent of graphitization, and the possible correlation of graphitization with such characteristic properties as hardenability, grain size and mechanical behavior. EARLIER work1,2 has shown that the strength developed by fired magnetite pellets containing silica or silicates is due to three separate effects. Two of these are associated with the formation of slag in the interior of each pellet at temperatures above 1000°C, where the atmosphere is substantially though temporarily neutral. The third is independent of the silica content and is responsible for the development of a hard shell around the pellet during the initial stages of firing, a condition which permits the pellet to assume the increasing load of the overlying burden and prevents extrusion of the slagged and semi-liquid interior. Pellets made from hematite concentrates do not show these effects unless specific additives are incorporated, and it is these differences in behavior which in large part account for the difficulty in producing satisfactory pellets from such concentrates. Elsewhere it has been stated that "the most important factor responsible for the development of strength in fired magnetite pellets containing no additive is the oxidation of magnetite to hematite and the subsequent recrystallization and grain growth of this constituent."1 The object of the investigation reported in the present paper was to study in detail the mechanism described above and to evaluate its contribution to the strength of the fired pellet compared with other possible mechanisms, excluding slag bonding. This was effected by placing together polished faces of two cubes prepared from specific minerals and then heating them under constant pressure at different temperatures both in air and in nitrogen.

The surface properties exhibited by bituminous coal and bituminous coal lithotypes were ascertained by using streaming potential techniques. The electro kinetic prop-erties wereascertainederties of bituminous coal were found to be similar to those of anthracite. The principle electrokinetic properties of the coal and lithotypes, zero-points-of-charge (ZPC), and potential determining ions, were established. The effects of indifferent electrolytes, hydronium and hydroxyl ion sources, and polyvalent ions (cationic and anionic) were also evaluated. Location of the ZPC's with respect to pH is discussed in terms of chemical and mineralogical composition of the respective surfaces. To account for the observed electrokinetic phenomena, a generalized surface model and adsorption mechanism are proposed. Surface-dependent processes, such as froth flotation and flocculation, are important or potentially important techniques for combating some of the current major problems in coal preparation. In order to correctly apply or improve a surface-dependent process, it is of paramount importance to understand the interfacial phenomenon, especially the double layer properties, exhibited by the solid. The specific objective of this research was to determine the properties of the bituminous coal/liquid interface by an electrokinetic method, streaming potential, and to relate the findings, wherever possible, to the existing unit operations of froth flotation and floccula-tion tion. The electrokinetic properties of both the whole coal and its lithotypes were investigated. As part of the total investigation, the role played in the double layer by the reagents commonly employed in the surface dependent process was also established.' These data will be presented at a later date. Experimental Procedures The coal samples used in this research and their designations are listed in Table 1. The classical description of humic coal lithotypes as developed by Stopes" was used for the delineation of the lithotype samples. The samples were taken from the working face of a producing deep mine of the Pittsburgh seam in the area of Ellsworth, Pa. To avoid oxidation, only freshly exposed areas were sampled. The normal precautions against contamination were also exercised. Two types of samples were taken, specimens rich in a particular lithotype and a representative channel sample. The latter sample was prepared for analyses by grinding it to —35 mesh. It was screened repeatedly during the grinding to provide the largest amount of 35 x 48-mesh (standard Tyler sieves) material possible. The screened fraction was passed over a magnet and then washed several times with distilled water and finally with conductivity water. The resulting sample now termed "whole coal" was stored under conductivity water in a glass bottle. Pure lithotypes were obtained from the lithotype concentrates by hand picking, and were processed in the same manner as the representative sample. Maceral analyses, employing standard petrographic procedures," were performed on the lithotype samples to determine the purity of the samples. The results are presented in Table 2. Reflectance measurements of the vitrinites and fusinites are also reported in this table. Proximate and ultimate analyses of the samples are given in Tables 3 and 4. The electrokinetic properties of the coal samples were determined by streaming potential methods.'-' All of the chemicals used in the investigation were reagent grade (Baker analyzed). The conductivity water was prepared by doubly distilling the water in a pyrex Yoe-type still and passing the distillate through a mixed bed ion exchange column. Results In general, the electrokinetic properties of the investigated bituminous coal were found to be similar to the results of a previous study of anthracite by Camp-bell bell5 and are in accord with the suppositions of Brown." The zeta potentials of the coal and all the lithotypes were found to be negative in conductivity water. Jowett? in a study of slime coatings on coal also found bituminous coal to exhibit a negative surface. Fig. 1 shows that the negative charges, at neutral pH's, for both fusain and the gangue are very small, almost zero, while at the same pH, vitrain has the largest negative charge, almost 30 mv. Durain has a negative charge of 17.5 mv. The determination of the affect of pH on the charge of the coal surfaces revealed that hydronium and hydroxyl ions apparently behave as potential determining ions; however, they do not appear to be potential determining for the gangue. These results are illustrated in Fig. 1. As the pH of the solution was decreased, hydronium ions were adsorbed, causing the surface of the coal to reverse polarity and become

Since the data in this paper pertain to a rod-mill operation, comminuting a particular ore size of ¾ in. to a final stage, coarser than 20-mesh, the rod mill is designated as a "fine crusher machine" in this paper. The published literature discloses a wealth of data regarding a rod mill as a fine-grinding machine but relatively little as a fine-crushing operation. Typical of the latter operation is: (I) a description by F. J. Tuck2 in which a fine-crushing rod mill replaced crushing rolls and (2) a description by the present authors3 in which a fine-crushing rod mill was installed instead of a collventional fine-crushing machine. The experience of the authors is that a definite distinction must he made between the rod mill functioning as a fine crusher and as a fine-grinding machine. As a fine crushing machine it prepares relatively large amounts of ore for a subsequent fine grinding operation; as a grinding machine, it grinds relatively small amounts of ore to some predetermined finished product. Pulp Movement and Action in Mill In considering the work performed by a fine-crushing rod mill, it seems important to understand just what takes place within the mill. We were inspired to study this matter by a paper by E. W. Davis,4 which indicated that definite water classification of ore particles took place in a ball mill. However, in thinking of the rod-mill action from this point of view, we were confronted with the fact that our rod-mill discharge product showed no evidence of action by water classification. The Tennessee Copper Co. ore is relatively high in sulphides, and the gangue rock and the sulphides are of about the same hardness. In the presence of any action by classification, the coarser sizes are definitely very lean in sulphide minerals.
