PERHAPS the matter of greatest interest to all mining men at the present time is the question of income and excess profits taxes on mines. Every producing mine in the United States is called upon to render to the government an account of its operations and to pay a graduated tax upon its earnings. It is manifestly a matter in which every mine owner, every stockholder in a mining corporation, every mining and metallurgical engineer, every person employed by a mining company and every one engaged in an industry which in any way depends upon the continued operation of our mines or who consumes their products is financially, to a greater or less extent, involved. In view of this fact it is surprising to see how little attention is paid to it and how few of our members have taken the pains to investigate and understand the provisions of recent enactments by Congress and the ways in which these enactments are being applied to mining industries.

The possibility of oil and gas production in Alabama his been little considered as yet. Gas and some oil have been found in northwestern Alabama, near Birmingham, in the Pennsylvanian beds, but the oil and gas possibilities in the Cretaceous beds are not generally appreciated. The recent activity of oil companies in that State has attracted much attention, and in this paper the main structural and the general strati-graphic features are described. Four favorable areas are outlined. These contain folds of major interest. There are other favorable areas which have not been mapped-l Commercial pools discovered in this area would have the advantage of being near tidewater. Mobile, Ala., on the Gulf of Mexico, would be the logical site for refineries and shipping facilities. A pipe line could readily be laid to that city from the Hatchitigbee and the Jackson areas. The logical outlet for the Geneva and the Gordon areas would be Panama City, Ha., on the Gulf of Mexico. Topography The whole of the area under consideration lies in the Gulf coastal plain and slopes gently to the southwest and west. The elevations vary from 200 to 400 ft. (60 to 121 m.) above sea level. The streams have sunk their channels into this gently sloping plain, the main drainage flowing south or southwest into the Gulf of Mexico. Between the

Tests show that 50 times the earth's normal field can exist near stacked drill rods. Protection against the effect of these strong fields can be obtained by means of a removable sleeve of common iron pipe. GEOLOGISTS and engineers working around a diamond drill rig have often had the opportunity to observe the magnetic attraction of drill rods pulled out of the hole for core removal. This is sometimes an amusing pastime, but this same magnetic force inadvertently applied to a compass needle can cause it to lose its polarity entirely or to become reverse polarized when placed in the immediate vicinity of stacked rods. The first recommendation, of course, would be to avoid the rods, but in surveying an operating drillhole this is not always possible; therefore steps must be taken to neutralize the magnetic effect of the drill rods. Early in the summer of 1949 the geological department of the New Jersey Zinc Co. undertook at Franklin, N. J., an extensive program of surveying the course of deep diamond drillholes. The majority of the holes were surveyed while in the process of being drilled, and considerable difficulty was encountered. A pattern for the deviation of drillholes had been established for the district from surveys in holes from which the drill rig had been removed. It was observed that a certain operating deep drillhole being surveyed did not fit this pattern. In the resulting confusion of repeated surveys and cementing a plug for wedging operations, the lower 1800 ft of the hole was lost. Because of this incident studies were initiated to determine the source of the difficulties and to develop safeguards against recurrence of faulty surveys. Using a hand magnet easily shows that the polarity of a compass needle can be reversed if rotation of the needle is hindered through tilting of the compass or clamping of the mechanism. Such experiments are not recommended, especially in the case of the clockwork type of instruments. A magnetized hairspring in a clockwork instrument will cause the compass card to assume a periodic motion which will not stop until the clockwork runs down. Routine check readings of instrument north before and after each survey are not always sufficient to catch instances of reversed polarity of the compass needle. Although the majority of instances probably take place while the instrument is being removed from the hole with needle in fixed position, it is demonstrable that a 'luggish needle, weakened during a previous test, can be reverse polarized

The Institute is at present in sound condition professionally and financially. During the past year 546 new members were elected, the total membership now numbering 5,221. The Treasurer's Report shows that the expenses of the Institute are met by its income. Your Directors have thought it wise to issue a referendum to the members asking for a vote upon the suggestion that the annual dues be raised from $10 to $12. This moderate increase is proposed not because the Institute needs it at present but to insure a continuation and increase in its activities and usefulness, and to provide a reserve fund for future emergencies. In well-conducted organizations, such as clubs, it is a wise and safe course to so adjust the clues of members that the total receipts from this source will about equal the annual expenditures, the initiation fees being used for reserve purposes. Our dues alone do not at present meet the expenses. This, I think, is the whole situation, so far as this question is concerned. Expenses might be reduced in some measure, but they cannot be materially reduced without affecting the integrity and usefulness of your Institute. Nothing of consequence in our internal affairs has occurred during the past year except, perhaps, the establishment of the Arizona Section and the prospect now assured of a Nevada Section. During recent months there has been a marked change in the relations of the Institute to its fellow societies and to the Government of the United States. That change is one of cooperation. The Secretary of the Navy has appointed two of your members to the Naval Consulting Board to cooperate with members of 10 other scientific organizations. This Board is now organized, and through its work your Institute is brought in close touch with the activities of the other societies and with the United States Navy. The President of the United States has requested us to recommend to the Government one of our representatives in each State in the Union to act in collaboration with a member in each State from the. American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the American Chemical Society, thus organizing a directorate of engineers for each State, that will conduct, through the members of each of the five societies referred to, living in each State, a campaign of industrial preparedness. The distortion of crystal structures referred to as "biege gleitung",1 "local curvature"2-4 and "deformation bands"5,6 is believed to be an unavoidable characteristic of deformed single crystals. The presence of asterism on Laue photograms of Al single crystals either deformed by pure shear7 or extended in a condition relatively free from the grip effect2 indicates strong evidence substantiating this point of view. The type of localized bending described in connection with the bending test of Al single crystals by Yen and Hibbard8 could conceivably exist either microscopically or submicroscopically in all types of deformation. The purpose of this note is to extend this idea to the postulate of a hypothetical "microbending site," as applied to the mechanism of slip in a general sense. The mosiac structure, as postulated by Darwin,9 is that crystals were actually composed of small blocks which have a linear dimension 10—4to 10-6 cm on the edge and deviate from each other by an angle of about one-tenth of a degree. The following discussion is based on the assumption that when slip is propagated from one mosaic block to the adjacent one, bending of the lattice at the region of their boundary is produced in order to maintain the continuity of the gliding process along a certain slip plane. Consider a two-dimensional diagram of two ideal mosiac blocks on the cross-section perpendicular to the slip plane and containing the active direction of slip. When an external force is applied, the localized bending or "microbending site," would be generated at the region as illustrated in Fig 1A at point B. A schematic diagram of a "microbending site," generated at a mosaic boundary, is illustrated in Fig IB. It may be seen that once the curvature of the bending site reaches sufficient magnitude, the interaction force encountered by pairs of atoms symmetrical with respect to the center of the bending is equal but opposite in sign. Consequently, the overall energy required to displace the atoms near the center is approximately zero.10"12 Based upon the finding that the misalignment between two mosaics is 0.1 degree,9 the assumption is made that "microbending sites" may possibly exist in the region where one plane will have one more row of atoms than an adjacent plane. It is probable that the origin of the bending site will be where the distance between two mosaic boundaries is "2d" as shown in Fig 1A at point B, where " d" is the interatomic distance. Thus, the distance between two "microbending sites" is in the range of about 600 interplanar spacings. In the case of aluminum, the spacing between two octahedral planes is about 2.33 A. The distance between two bending sites will be approximately 2.5 X 10"5 cm. THE CHAIRMAN (WALTER DOUGLAS, NEW YORK, N. Y.).-Perhaps there is no problem that causes the modern metallurgist more worry than the question of unaccounted for loss. He has not the advantage of the metallurgist of the early days here, who could sleep peaceably with the settled conviction that there were certain copper mineral constituents of the ore which were volatile, and there was therefore nothing to worry about. The slag contents and volatilization accounted for the balance of the copper that went in the top of the furnace after the weighing of the bullion. There have been great strides in recent years toward reducing this loss. Perhaps the Anaconda company is the one we have to thank for the original pioneer work along the lines which we are all today following. We would be glad to hear from some gentlemen present with reference to their experience with this question of dust losses. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-You mentioned the Anaconda company, Mr. Chairman. I would like to say something about what we have been doing there, and the troubles we have been having. We have a tremendous volume of .gas to handle. We adopted the system of large chambers, lessening the velocity of gases, and incidentally cooling the gases. Unfortunately in one sense and fortunately in another, we were compelled to increase the amount of gas handled in the flue system, and the results were then not so good. Still, we get a very good recovery. Our system of taking a sample is similar to the one described by the writer of the paper. We have tried all kinds of apparatus for getting a fair sample. We divided the area of the flue into imaginary squares, and have taken samples for a certain period of time from each square; and have used the asbestos bags. At present, there is a large unit of the Cottrell apparatus almost ready to connect up on the roaster flue to catch the dust from flotation concentrates. The worst things smelters have to handle at the present clay, they are coming in the Southwest as well as the Northwest, are of material much of which is as small as 500 mesh, and the ordinary methods of catching dust will not apply to flotation concentrates. The Cottrell process is going to be tried out at our plant for this material. We have devised special forms, with a view to preventing the formation of dust from this material, and we are pleased with the results so far obtained. There is another point in connection with this subject that I want to put before the members here, so they will be thinking about it. Rock pressure against the supports for underground workings in certain mines becomes sufficiently severe to crush sound timbers. The cost of maintenance of these mines increases critically as the workings are extended. "Heavy ground " and "swell-jng ground" are terms commonly applied to a condition of excessive pressure from the wall rock. Defined for the purposes of this paper, "heavy ground" delivers gravi-tative pressure on the supports of a mint opening; "swelling ground" delivers pressure arising from expansion of the wall rock. Mining problems created by heavy ground have been studied extensively by mining engineers, as in the recent Symposium on Block caving.' A parallel study of rock bursts2 attacks the field of ground that ruptures under strain. The problem of swelling ground, which has received less current attention, is the subject of this paper. An ExaMPLe of Swelling Ground Severe cases of swelling ground are found in the gougy shear zones in mines along the western Sierra Nevada, where the veins are accompanied by faults through altered serpentine, schist and slate. For example, along troublesome stretches in the ldaho Maryland mine, Grass Valley, California, swelling ground continues to crush drift timbers, with diminishing intensity, for 3 to 10 years after entry. During this period, from five to nine generations of crushed timber sets must be replaced and a large additional tonnage of scaly rock and wet gouge must be removed from the drift to make room for this succession of new timbers. After "the squeeze has been taken out of the ground" the timbers will stand for years, until they collapse from decay. Heaving of floor and footwall along drifts develops soon after the timber sets are placed and frequent grading down of the track is necessary to keep it serviceable and to maintain headroom. If sills are placed under the drift posts, the sets break more quickly and the track becomes impassable at once. When the floor is left Open? and the bottoms of posts and stulls are pencil-pointed, the scaly ground of the fault zone swells up around the timbers (Fig. I) instead of breaking them (Fig. 2). A foot or two of this encroaching ground is trimmed from the floor and lower sides of the drift several times before complete retimbering is necessary. when a set of timber fai1s under the Pressure of swelling ground, there is no immediate fall of timber and broken rock to fill the drift, as is customary in heavy, caving ground. Instead, ground swelling from sides, top and bottom gradually closes the opening, over a period of weeks or months, and no especial hazard to workmen is present while they have room to walk through the narrowing drift. Rapid advances in any branch of science often follow the development of new instruments or techniques which permit the scientist a closer look at the material in which he is interested. With the development of the polariz¬ing microscope, modern petrology was born. The resolving power of the microscope, however, was not great enough to enable the geologist to dis¬tinguish or identify the material now known to be minerals which constitute the bulk of the rocks known as "clays" and laterites. The discovery of X-rays and the development of powder X-ray diffrac¬tion techniques provided the extra resolving power necessary to get "a closer look" at the minerals in the clays and laterites. These techniques are largely responsible for the great strides made in the past two decades in the identification of the clay, sesquioxide and hydroxide minerals. To obtain an X-ray diffraction. pattern of a mineral or rock is relatively a simple procedure, but to interpret this pattern in terms of crystal structure or min¬eral identity is quite another matter. It has taken the combined talents of physicists, physical and colloid chemists, mineralogists, and geologists to unravel the identity of some of the minerals in these complex rocks and, as this symposium will indicate, many more problems remain to be solved. To assist in the identification of these minerals, we have the ever-useful microscope, which, is supplemented by the development, only in the last ten years, of differential thermal techniques and the powerful and costly "eye" that enables us to see the shapes and sizes of extremely small particles -the electron microscope. To this array of equipment must be added such gadgets as supercentrifuges, spectrographs, and the apparatus necessary for chemical analytical work. Obviously, not only is it difficult for any one man to master all of the techniques to the point where he can do competent re¬search, but also few institutions are able to provide the high capital outlay for purchase and maintenance of suitable equipment. Here we clearly see that if this equipment is to help us solve our many problems, a close co¬operation of specialists from various institutions and industry is essential. This, however, is less than half the problem. If the geologist is going to learn to intelligently find, and the industrialist to intelligently and eco¬nomically exploit the materials that constitute a large part of the mineral wealth upon which our way of life is based, we must get a better insight into

The ideal fuel for burning ceramic wares is the one that, among other characteristics, has little or no sulfur. For that reason wood was long considered the most desirable fuel but its high cost has practically eliminated its use except in regions where it is very abundant or other circumstances warrant its choice. The fuels commonly employed are natural and producer gas, oil, and coal. The last named is undoubtedly the most important, not only in this country but abroad. Occasionally anthracite is used but the larger part is bituminous. The quality of the coal used depends on the kind and the value of the products being manufactured. For some materials, such as common brick, hollow block, etc., the quality of the coal is of less importance than in the manufacture of polychrome terra cotta, pottery, porcelain, etc. It is obvious that in burning clays that contain notable amounts of pyrite, marcasite or gypsum, as is the case with many common clays, the sulfur content of the fuel is of much less importance. The permissible amount of sulfur in the coal used will depend on the kind of product being manufactured. "A good sample1 of coal commonly used in pottery ovens has something like this quantity of sulfur: total sulfur, 1.20 per cent.; sulfur in ash, 0.11 per cent.; volatile sulfur, 1.09 per cent." This is based on English pottery practice. Correspondence with a. number of leading manufacturers in this country has produced the following figures: Sanitary Ware.—(a) 1.0 per cent, maximum, (b) 0.5 per cent. Sewer Pipe.—(a) 1.2 per cent., (b) 1.1 per cent, present run, 3.0 per cent, has been used. Terra Cotta.—(a) 0.5 per cent, basis of contract, 1.0 per cent, approximate. Pottery.—1.0 per cent, contract, 1.5 per cent, probable content. Enameled Brick.—1.3 per cent, maximum, (a) and (6) designate different firms giving figures. In a letter to Prof. L. P. Breckenridge, chairman, urging the continua-tion of the Fuel Conservation Committee of the Engineering Council, Edwin Ludlow calls attention to the millions of tons of culm in the an-thracite region that can be utilized in properly equipped plants and the electricity generated transmitted to. New York, Philadelphia, and other nearby cities. He says: "Experiments have shown the economic value of No. 4 Buckwheat, which passes through a 1/16-in. mesh and over a 1/32-in. mesh. Culm passing through a 1/32-in- mesh is pulverized until it passes through a 300 mesh and is then burned under boilers. Two plants of this kind are now in successful operation in the anthracite region. Another rather interesting experiment was using 30 per cent. of this pulverized coal with 70 per cent. of oil in the generation of steam in the place of pure oil. This utilization of the fine anthracite, which has always been a waste product and thrown away, is not only fuel conservation in its truest sense but in the case of a bituminous strike, when no strike is contemplated in the anthracite field, will furnish fuel to manufacturing plants that otherwise would be obliged to shut down."

Twice in the past two years and in two widely separated localities-one near Williamsville, Mo., and the other in the Allard Lake district of Quebec- the Contract Drilling Division of the Longyear Company has experienced perplexing difficulties in drilling granitoid igneous rocks. The rocks in both places are characterized by appreciable amounts of feldspar intimately intergrown with quartz particles of microscopic dimensions. The disappointingly slow rate of advance and the exceptionally high bortz loss, obtaining during the life of these two projects, are ascribed largely to the resistance to abrasion of these two minerals when arranged in this intergrown pattern. Whether all intergrowth-bearing igneous rocks would offer extraordinary resistance to bit progress cannot be stated with assurance on the strength of these experiences alone. More data on diamond drilling this sort of material in a number of localities are needed before any generalizations can be made safely.

To evaluate chemically the sample of rock obtained by diamond drilling, it has long been recognized that the analyses of the two components of the sample, core and sludge, must be given appropriate influence in computing the average analysis of any unit of depth. The purpose of this investigation is to set forth what means are available for apportioning the effect of core and sludge on the final analysis, what variables affect the problem, and what combination of applied mathematics will closest approximate the truth under each condition as these variables proceed within their limitations. A drill hole is bored in iron ore exploration principally to test variations in rock composition with depth and is usually directed as nearly normal to the bedding of a horizon to be tested as possible. This practice has a tendency to minimize variation in composition laterally which in any event is not likely to be great. It is obvious that the opportunity for change in analysis of a particular rock is not statistically as great radially in a diamond drill hole where the distance in which such a change may occur is from 0.719 in. (EX bit) to 1.469 in. (NX bit) as there would be longitudinally even in a' run as short as 5 ft. Variations in composition of bedded or layered rocks are usually greater normal to the bedding than parallel thereto. Even in massive rocks, like porphyries, variations are functions of distance. Hence. in either case, variations along the hole are of greater effect than across it. Let us examine Fig 1 briefly to observe a cross section of a unit of depth of a typical diamond drill hole. If we neglect radial change in chemical composition, which we have seen is small compared to lengthwise variation, we can see that if core recovery was 100 pct, the core and its surrounding area, which would be recovered as cuttings (assuming 100 pct sludge recovery), must analyze the same if the sampling is perfect. This is the foundation of this paper, namely, that if core recovery is complete we may assume that the core constitutes as nearly as possible a perfect sample of the ground drilled. Now let us pass to the methods of weighting core and sludge in the final analysis and then develop each in turn. One might employ core analyses only, sludge analyses only, or apportion the influence of each by one of several methods. The most common apportionment is by direct proportion to relative theoretical vol- ' ume occupied by each component in the cylinder hollowed out by the drill, known as the Longyear formula. Another logical treatment would be to consider core and sludge in the final analysis according to the weight of each recovered. This procedure was elaborately set forth and refined by R. S. Moeh1man.l Then to be sure that we have embraced all the possibilities, we must admit that some other method or methods may be devised empirically or by mathematical maneuvers. Should a drill machine be capable of recovering 100 pct of the core in all types of rock, certainly core alone need be analyzed and no complicated mathematics are required; but although some companies have had fair success in obtaining high percentages of core in certain homogeneous ores on the Mar-quette Range, their same methods have proved disappointing on the Menominee, Cuyuna, and Gogebic Ranges where the iron formation often varies widely from flinty chert beds interstratified with soft hematite to wholly leached ore material composed of an unpredictable mixture of hematite and limonite with occasional zones of sugary, recrystallized chert. In spite of numerous mechanical improvements in core barrels, few drilling programs can count on complete core recovery. The sludge alone might be analyzed but for practical reasons this is inadvisable when core is obtained due to the numerous opportunities for contaminating or losing portions of the cuttings. The Longyear formula involves a weighting of the core and sludge in proportion to the theoretical volume of each, that is, where the volume of the core recovered is one-third of the total cubic volume of the cylindrical hole made by the drill, the analysis of the core is given one-third of the weight in the final analysis. In any process wherein materials must be pelletized, a crucial period exists during the interval between the manufacture of the green pellets and their subsequent heat treatment. The pellets must possess sufficient strength and plasticity to withstand conveying and sizing. Also, they must be neither excessively brittle nor excessively plastic when placed in a bed on a traveling grate for heat treatment. An acceptable pellet, in the event sufficient forces are applied to cause its fracture, will merely split into two or three large fragments which would not drastically alter the permeability of the pellet bed. However, when brittle pellets are broken, they shatter so that the resultant fine particles either decrease the perimeability of the bed or become entrained in the gas stream and thereby cause dust problems. On the other hand, excessively plastic pellets may not break at all but may merely flatten. This would seriously hamper bed permeability. In the past, pellet evaluation has usually been left to the creative and artistic talents of the balling operators. A multitude of techniques have evolved, of which the most common is the simple compression test. For this test a hand-operated device loads single pellets to fracture, but reliability is strictly operator- dependent. Probably the next most common test is the drop test, which is conducted according to several different procedures. This is an important quantitative test for estimating the amount of handling a pellet will withstand. There are many other tests, such as pinching a pellet between the thumb and index finger, but none are capable of producing reproducible results.

We have studied the effect of adsorbed sulfur on the surface self-diffusion of copper using eight diflerent surface orientations and the grain boundary grooving method. The eight orientations studied were the four lying near the low-index surfaces—(loo), (Ill), and two directions in the (110)-plus four higher-index surfaces. Surface-diffusion measurements were made over a range of HZS concentrations (in Hz) from 3 to 1500 ppm between 830°and 1050°C. The results can be divided into two groups—Group 1 contains the two (110) surfaces while Group 2 contains the remaining six surfaces. In Group 1, increasing the temperature increases the effect of Hz S on DS for the Hz S range 5700 ppvn. Qs and Do increase with increasing H2S concentration in this Hz S range. Beyond this range, increasing the temperature decreases this effect on D,; also Q, and Do decrease. In Group 2, increasing the telnperature decreases the effect of H2 S on D, for the H2S range studied, and Qs and Do decrease with increasing Hz S concentration. In any study of surface phenomena, there invariably arises the question of the possible presence of and effect of adsorbed impurities. Such questions are well-founded since the presence of adsorbed atoms can sometimes produce marked changes in the kinetics of surface-energy-driven processes. In the last few years, values of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, D,, have been determined on a variety of metals by studying the decay of scratches or the growth of grain boundary grooves.L~3-L0~L3 Yet there has been relatively little work done in which the concentration of an adsorbed impurity was systematically varied and the effects observed. Work of this sort would provide some basis in fact for the assertions often made about the ro1.e of adsorbed impurities in the differences between the results of different workers in different atmospheres and on different metals. It also is relevant to those cases in which surface monolayers produce profound effects in commercially important processes. The most marked example of such effects is the ability of nickel or palladium to increase the sintering rate of tungsten by many orders of magnitude.' The aim of this work was to study the effect of sulfur partial pressures on the surface self-diffusion of copper. It was felt that this in conjunction with a study of the degree of adsorption and type of active sites involvedL8 would provide a wide range of data for one system and hopefully lead to some insight into the mechanism by which sulfur adsorption influences copper diffusion. The main reasons for choosing the Cu-S system were, first, faceting was reported not to accompany the adsorption of sulfur. This is required if our experimental technique is to work. Second, Oudar has determined a high temperature adsorption isotherm for this system, an event which puts the Cu-S system almost in a class by itself.I4 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Initially, we considered studying the effect of an adsorbed impurity on surface self-diffusion of copper using isolated (or single) scratch smoothing as the technique and oxygen as the impurity. Copper was chosen as the material because the effects of orientation and anisotropy of the surface self-diffusion coefficient, D,, of copper in a dry hydrogen atmosphere had been studied extensively by Gjostein' and by Shewmon and ~hoi.~,~ The isolated scratch technique was chosen because both the effects of surface orientation and anisotropy of D, in a given surface could be easily studied with this method.~ Oxygen was tried as the impurity because Robertson and Shewmon""~ had studied its adsorption on copper at 1000°C over the range of oxygen partial pressures of 10"22 to 10-l3 atm. After several preliminary runs, it became evident that neither the scratch technique nor the impurity oxygen would be satisfactory for this work. Scratching deforms an annealed surface so that the region near the scratches recrystallizes, thereby disrupting the scratch profiles. One can avoid this by deforming the specimen sufficiently before scratching to give complete recrystallization on subsequent heating.4 However, as a result of Gjostein's success in scratching and annealing undeformed gold single crystals without local recrystallization,13 we attempted something similar with copper single crystals using a 0.7-mil diamond phonograph needle mounted in a Tukon hardness tester. All specimens recrystallized upon being annealed. Also, some copper specimens were sent to Gjostein to be scratched using his technique. The results were the same. As a result, the scratch technique was dropped in favor of the grooving of symmetric grain boundaries. Preliminary work using oxygen showed that faceting began to occur before oxygen adsorption had any measurable effect on D, at 938°C (at Pbo/P, = 0.12). Since heavy faceting would interfere with the measurement, we decided to use a sulfur-containing atmosphere (H2S/H2). Work by Oudar and Benard' and Robertson" showed that sulfur absorbed on copper and that faceting was not observed.

The nucleation process for y', Ni3Ti, is shou'n to change from heterogeneous to uniform as the undercooling within the phase boundary increases. As unifornz nucleation beconres copious, (100) alignment is observed in the early stages of aging; howecer. whether or not the alignment is due to spinodal decomposition could not be determined. The presence oi a large-scale reversible segregation of titanium and not the intermediate precipitate y' may be the cause of the initial strengthening in this alloy system and the discrete regions detected magnetically by Ben-Israel and Fine. Evidence is presented for the role of dislocations in the formation at long aging tines oJ the equilibrium precipitate . ThE nickel-rich portion of the Ni-Ti phase diagram consists of a terminal fcc solid solution of titanium in nickel called y.' For temperatures below 1290°C if the solubility limit is exceeded and the temperature is high enough, the excess titanium will combine with nickel to form q, Ni3Ti, a four-layer hcp ordered structure with stacking sequence ABAC."~ Since a change in structure is involved, formation of q is slow and a metastable precipitate referred to as y' forms. This metastable precipitate is an ordered cubic phase in the unconstrained state having a structure similar to Cu3Au (LIZ) with the composition Ni,Ti."'5 From X-ray studies,8, 7 the following sequence is indicated for the precipitation reaction at low temperatures: 1) The appearance of satellites around low-index diffraction spots and splitting of high-index spots, indicating the formation of a slightly tetragonal phase in an imperfectly periodic arrangement. The tetragonal phase is y' or the depleted matrix, depending on the volume fractions of matrix and precipitate (and hence, the alloy composition); tetragonality apparently arises from coherency strains. 2) The appearance of diffraction spots from the equilibrium second phase, q. Ben-Israel and Fine'" used magnetic methods to measure the changes in matrix composition during aging, and to estimate the precipitate composition in a Ni-10.1 at. pct Ti alloy. They observed that the alloy, solution-treated at 1270°C and quenched, contained heterogeneities with discrete compositions which gradually vanished upon aging. It was suggested that y' may initially form as a defect structure with several possible compositions deficient in titanium as compared to Ni3Ti; the composition Ni3Ti develops with prolonged aging. The initial composition was Ni6Ti which would require a very large deviation in stoichiometry for y'. It was noted that at 700°C the precipitation reaction was 80 pct complete after 2 hr and that the volume fraction of second phase was 0.2 after 1 hr. Mihalisin and Decker' suggested that the equilibrium precipitate, besides being nucleated at grain boundaries, could also form at stacking faults. ~errick" examined the formation of in Ni-Cr-Ti, and suggested that a collapsed vacancy cluster within y' acted as a nucleus for intragranular q at high temperatures, 820" and 900°C. After long aging times at lower temperatures, 650" and 750°C, diffraction patterns taken from regions containing ribbons of stacking faults showed spots associated with q. Aging greatly enhances the mechanical properties of these alloys, even at high temperatures, and the metastable precipitate y' is thought to be responsible.' At 600°C the hardness of a Ni-10.1 at. pct Ti alloy increases rapidly during the first 20 hr of aging and continues to increase slowly thereafter.'" At 700°C the hardness reaches a maximum at 1 to 2 hr and then decreases.l1 In this paper the kinetics of formation of y' and the mechanism of transformation to in a Ni-Ti alloy are described. Evidence is presented that suggests that large-scale regions of titanium segregation are present initially and these may have an important influence on the initial strengthening of the alloy: these regions may be the heterogeneities detected by Ben-Israel and Fine. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The Ni-10.3 at. pct Ti-0.6 at. pct A1 alloy was prepared by vacuum melting. Its chemical analysis is given in Table I. A 0.007-in.-thick strip was sandwiched between foils of the alloy and placed in an open Vycor tube with titanium chips (to get oxygen) and solution-treated for ; hr at 1150°C in a Globar Furnace under a flowing argon atmosphere. Following a quench into an ice-brine mixture at -5" to -2"C, a sample to be aged at temperatures up to and including 700°C was sealed in an evacuated Vycor capsule before being put into a fused salt bath. Aging above 700°C was carried out on bare samples in a salt bath. The time effect in reheating certain steels below the critical range is very marked. The increased toughness, shock-resisting power, and machinability of steel subjected to a long, high drawing temperature has been thoroughly demonstrated and is of practical importance, particularly in the manufacture of L'smokeless" rifle-barrel steel. The time effect in tempering is most important when a maximum drawing effect is desired, in which case the highest physical properties as well as ease of machining are important considerations. These are the conditions in drilling a rifle barrel. A hole, 0.30 in. in diameter and 24 in. long for the Springfield rifle, and 30 in. long for the Russian military rifle, has to be drilled in the heat-treated material. This barrel-drilling operation is probably the most difficult one in rifle manufacture, and anyone who has been connected with rifle manufacture knows how seriously production is affected when "hard" or non-uniform steel for barrels is encountered. The importance of high physical properties (tensile strength, toughness and resilience) in a rifle barrel is obvious. The physical properties of two different lots of barrel steel are given below. The first lot, No. 1, gave serious trouble in the drilling operation; the second gave no trouble at all. Studies were undertaken to investigate the effects of manganese content on the machinability and other Properties of a free machining martensitic stainless steel (AISI Type 416). Machinability was found to be significantly improved in steels of high manganese content, and a direct relationship was obtained between machinability and steel Mn:S ratio. As the manganese content of the steel increases, the sulfide Phase present changes from CrS to (FeMn)Cr2S4 to (MnFeCr)S, and finally to MnS. The average sulfide inclusion hardness decreases through the same range of increasing manganese content. The mechanism for machinability improvement is discussed in terms of a soft ductile sulfide affecting deformation in the secondary shear zone. Type 416 containing relatively high manganese for improved machinability shows good general properties. The effects of increasing manganese content on mechanical properties, cold formability, and corrosion resistance are described. THE addition of sulfur is commonly used to improve the machinability of stainless steels. However, little attention has been paid in the past to the composition and characteristics of the sulfur-containing phase or phases present in these resulfurized steels. Recent information on the properties of sulfide phases, and their role in metal cutting, suggests that variations in these phases could have critical effects on machin-ability, as well as important effects on formability and other properties such as corrosion resistance. Manganese, chromium, and iron are strong sulfide forming elements present in stainless steels! of these, manganese has the greatest sulfide forming tendency and iron the least.1"1 The manganese content of resul-furized 13 pct Cr steels, often about 0.5 pct, can be insufficient or only barely sufficient to combine with the sulfur that is present; thus, the precise level of manganese can strongly influence the nature of the sulfide phase. Sulfide phases which may be present in stainless steels have been reported to include CrS, a spinel-type sulfide, chromium-rich manganese sul-fide, and manganese Sulfide.5,6 Detailed phase relationships for the Fel3Cr-Mn-S system have been reported by the present investigators,7 and a portion of this work will be referred to subsequently in this paper. Recent work by Kiessling6 and Chao et a1.8 has shown that sulfide phases can display wide variations in hardness, and may undergo considerable plastic deformation under isostatic loading.9-12 Early theories of metal cutting attributed the influence of sulfur to a lubricating effect. It is now apparent that the influence of the nonmetallic inclusions and their properties on crack initiation, deformation in the shear zones, and boundary films must also be considered in relation to the machining process. This paper presents the results of studies conducted to relate machinability to the various sulfide phases which occur in stainless steels. This work has led to the development of alloys with improved machinability, and has generated information on the effects of inclusions on metal cutting processes. Effects of sulfide inclusions and steel composition on other important metallurgical properties are also discussed. MATERIALS For drill machinability and inclusion studies, 10 lb laboratory heats were melted in an air induction furnace. These heats were made with sulfur contents be tween 0.10 and 0.50 pct and manganese contents be tween 0.05 and 3.0 pct. Residual elements were added to the heats in amounts typical for commercial steels. The typical compositional range covered by the heats is shown below: C Mn P S Si Ni Cr Mo Cu N 0.10 0.05 0.007 (M0 0.40 0.40 13.0 0.20 0.10 0.03 3.0 0750 The laboratory ingots were forged in the temperature range of 1800" to 2100°F to 3/4-in. sq bars, and all bars tempered to a hardness aim of 200 Bhn prior to testing. Because of differences in composition and tempering response, the tempered bars showed some variation in hardness (175 to 275 Bhn) as well as variations in delta ferrite content (0 to 50 pct). Composition, hardness, and delta ferrite content were considered in the analysis of the machinability data. Additional tests involving tool-life evaluation and determination of other properties were conducted on materials from commercially melted and processed 15-ton electric furnace heats. TESTS AND PROCEDURES Machinability of the laboratory heats was evaluated in a drill test. In this test, 1/4-in. diam holes, 0.4 in. deep, were drilled alternately in a test bar and in a standard bar for a total of four holes in each. This sequence was repeated three times using a freshly sharpened drill each time. The average time required to drill a hole in the test bar was compared to that for the standard bar. The Exposed Treasure gold-mine has, for the past four years, been one of the largest producing mines of Southern California, its annual output havirig con~tituted I per cent. of the total gold and silver production of the entire State. At the present moment the property is idle, owing to the large quantity of water encountered on the lower levels, which will require the installation of a powerful pumping-plant before operations call be recommenced. Moreover, a prompt change in the character of the ore has occurred at water-level, which makes imperative an extensive campaign of development in the region of the un-oxidized ores before a plant adapted to their treatment call be definitely decided upon. The character of the changes encountered in these deeper ores makes the geology of this deposit a matter of importance, riot only for the immediate district, but for the desert region of Southern California in general, where many mines exist having in the oxidized belt conditions that, in many respects, resemble those in the Exposed Treasure mine. The deposit is situated in an apparently isolated butte about 2.5 miles south from the town of Mojave, on the Mojave desert. The butte, though apparently isolated, is in Fact geologicallg part of an extinct volcano, known as Soledad butte, which rises out of the plain 1.5 miles SW. of' the mine, to an altitude of 4,650 ft. above sea-level. Other buttes also rise from the desert plain toward the south and east, and again to the westward, all being closely related geologically to Soledad butte,—the whole constituting a single system as to origin and time. Since the end of the period of active volcanism in this region, there has been extensive denudation, the ancient plateau having been dissected during an epoch of apparently exces-

The many factors that control bumping must be carefully studied for each coal seam where bumps occur, and specifications known to exclude bumping should be incorporated in the mining plans. This calls for complete knowledge of the seam's characteristics and its adjacent strata, and in many instances these characteristics are not revealed until the seam is actually mined. Pressure and shock bumps, the two general types, occur jointly and separately. In this discussion no differentiation will be made. Whether pressure or shock, they are treated as bumps, and both must be eliminated. Bumps in mines have occurred in several places throughout the coal fields of the world. A study of many of these occurrences indicates that geologic characteristics, development planning, and mining procedure have contributed. But more specifically, there are conditions usually associated with bumps: thickness of cover, strong strata directly on or above the seam, a tough floor or bottom not subject to heaving, mountainous terrain, stressed and steeply pitching beds, and the proximity of faults and other geologic structures. Mine planning should incorporate these known factors (not necessarily in order of importance): 1) Main panel entries should be limited to those absolutely necessary to ventilate and serve the mine. This reduces the span over which stresses may be set up that will later throw excessive pressures on barrier and chain pillars when they are being removed. 2) Barrier pillars should be as wide as practicable so that they will be strong enough to carry the loads thrown on them when final mining is being carried out. 3) Pillars should never be fully recovered on both sides of a main entry development if the barrier and chain pillars are to be removed later. The excessive pressures placed on the main chain and pillar barriers by arching of the gob areas can result in bumping when these barriers are being removed. 4) Full seam extraction is better accomplished by driving to the mine boundary and then retreat-drawing all pillars. If there are natural boundaries in the mine—such as faults, want areas, and valleys —retreat should be started there. 5) Pillars should be uniform in size and shape. The entire development of the mine should call for uniform blocks with entries driven parallel and perpendicular. Only angle break-throughs should be driven when necessary for haulage, etc. 6) For better distribution of rock stresses and reduction of carrying loads per unit area, both chain and barrier pillars should be developed with the maximum dimensions. 7) Pillars should be open-ended when recovered. If they are oblong, the short side should be mined first. Both sides of a block should not be mined simultaneously, but under no circumstance should the lifts be cut together. 8) Pillar sprags should not be left in mining. If they are not recoverable, they should be rendered incapable of carrying loads. 9) Pillar lines should be as short as practicable. (Three or four blocks are adequate). Experience has shown that rooms should be driven up and retreated immediately. The longer a room stands, the more unfavorable the mining conditions. This contributes to bumping. 10) Pillars should not be split in abutment zones (high stress areas lying close to mined out areas) and if slabbing is necessary, it should be open-ended. 11) Pillars should be recovered in a straight line. Irregular pillar lines will allow excessive pressures thrown on the jutting points. Experience has shown that the lead end of the pillar line can be slightly in advance. 12) Pillar lines should be extracted as rapidly as possible. This appears to lessen pressures on the line and render abutment zones less hazardous. 13) Extraction planning should call for large, continuous robbed out areas. Robbing out an area too narrow to get a major fall of the strata above the seam tends to throw excessive pressures on a pillar line. 14) Timbering in pillar areas should be adequate but not excessive. Too heavy timbering or cribbing is likely to retard roof falls and throw excessive weight on the pillar line. 15) Experience has shown that when pillar lines have retreated 800 to 1000 ft from the solid, bumps can occur. Because this distance may vary in different seams, impact stresses should be studied for each individual condition. In any event, extra precautions should be taken against bumps in this area. This list of controlling factors may or may not be complete. It probably is not, but it covers most of the problem's significant aspects. The question is whether or not bumping can be eliminated. The answer is that bumping can be minimized and possibly eliminated if these and other established factors are thoughtfully considered and incorporated in the mining and extraction plans. If a mine has already been developed or the pattern set so that little change can be made, then it will be necessary to adjust to the most nearly practicable system that can incorporate the known factors.
