On its tenth anniversary, the computer is a "fact-of- life" in the mineral industries. Its evolution as a practical mining tool was accurately summarized by Alfred Weiss, editor of the Proceedings of the 1969 International Computer Application Symposium, A Decade of Digital Computing in the Mineral Industry: "During the past decade, data processing and operations research developments within the mineral industry have evolved through states typical of any new technique. These have ranged from mere recognition, to cautious acceptance, to confident utilization, and in some instances, to substantial investment in computer hardware and software."

In recent years, oil well cementing compositions have been developed with low densities, controlled set strengths, and satisfactory thickening times. With the introduction of the permanent-type well completion method for cementing wells, another property—that of rate of filtration or water loss to permeable formations— has become important. Laboratory data show that cement slurries prepared with oil, water, bentonite, and calcium lignosulfonate possess satisfactory thickening times, strengths, and filtration properties for primary cementing of casing and for squeeze cementing with the permanent-type well completion technique. Cementing compositions have been prepared with oil-in-water emulsions varying in composition from 60 cc water and 20 cc oil per 100 gm cement to 90 cc water and 45 cc oil per 100 gm cement. These compositions have contained from 0.4 to 5.0 per cent calcium lignosulfonate by weight of dry cement. Slurries prepared from these compositions weigh 11.4 to 13.1 lb/ga1 and have filtration rates of from 10 cc to approximately 100 cc in 30-min API tests at room temperature. The unfiltered emulsion cements develop one-day tensile strengths of 60 to 220 psi; and the filtered mass sets to tensile strengths of 60 to 150 psi in 12 hours and develops strengths of 320 to 515 psi in seven days when cured at 125° F. Field experience gained from 13 field mixing jobs demonstrates the utility of the emulsion cement for permanent-type squeeze cementing operations. INTRODUCTION In recent years, research in oil well cementing composition has been directed toward the development of cements having low densities, controlled set strengths, satisfactory thickening times, and low rates of water loss by filtration. Two well cementing compositions that have been developed with these properties are the modified cements containing, respectively, 12 and 25 per cent bentonite clay and various concentrations of calcium lignosulfonate1,2 In a search for other ways to incorporate these characteristics in a cementing composition, consideration was given to the rheological properties of oil-emulsion drilling fluids. Many of the desirable properties observed in oil-emulsion drilling fluids are equally advantageous in a cementing composition. For example, low water loss by filtration and low density, which are inherent characteristics of these oil-in-water emulsions, are desirable for many oil well cementing operations. Furthermore, oil-emulsion slurries have lubricating properties similar to those of oil-emulsion muds, a factor which should provide ease of rotation of casing during primary cementing operations. The properties of lubrication and low filtration may be of special value in both primary and squeeze cementing operations encountered in slim-hole drilling. The Mississippi river was discovered by French explorers that came southwestward, by way of the Great Lakes, from eastern Canada. Vignan, Joliet, De Champlain, and others of the French pioneers in the first half of the seventeenth century, dreamed of a short cut to China by means of the great waterways they explored. In a geographical book published in London in 1726 by Daniel Coxe an account is given of "a new and curious discovery and relation betwixt the river Meschachebe [Mississippi] and the South Sea, which separates America from China, by means of several large rivers and lakes". Louis Joliet, a fur-trader, and Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit missionary, reached the Mississippi and paddled their canoes on its broad waters on June 17, 1673.* They descended the river as far as the entry of the Arkansas tributary, and then returned overland to Canada, being deterred from going farther south by reason of Indian hostility. Several years later Robert de La Salle, a French trader, starting from Quebec, went westward to Lake Michigan and thence to the Illinois river, which he and his comrades descended in their canoes to the junction with the Mississippi, and then followed it to the sea. They reached the Gulf of Mexico on April 9, 1682. Thus the great central waterway of North America was made known. These French-Canadian voyageurs, or boatmen, traded with the Indians for furs in the Upper Mississippi valley, and when in need of bullets they noticed the outcrops of lead ore, from which, probably in the last decade of the seventeenth

The Mogollon mining district is in the southwestern part of New Mexico near the southern end of the Mogollon range, from which the district takes its name. The town of Mogollon is but 371/2 miles in an air line northeast of Clifton, Ariz. The air-line distance from Silver City is 521/2 miles and from Tyrone, 57 miles. Supplies are transported by motor truck from Silver City. The distance by road is 75 miles, half of which is an improved highway of modern construction. Transportation has always been a large item of expense in carrying on operations in the district. Valuable ore is said to have been discovered in the Mogollon Mountains as early as 1870 but the first regular prospecting was carried on in 1875, by James C. Cooney, a sergeant from Fort Bayard. His discovery of rich silver-copper ores in the region of Mineral Creek led to the establishment of the Camp of Cooney. Remote from any settlements where there was a semblance of law and order, and harassed by the Apaches, development was slow and nearly 10 years elapsed before the village of Mogollon was established on Silver Creek. Prospecting in this section of the district had disclosed the outcrops of several promising veins containing silver-gold ores. Among the early claims located were the Last Chance, Top and Confidence, on what has proved to be the most productive vcin in the district. To the end of 1922, the Last Chance and Top claims had produced approximately 600,000 tons of ore and nearly 200,000 tons had come from the Confidence group of claims. The total value of the ore produced from this vein alone has amounted to about $9,600,000 in silver and gold. The Fanney vein was developed later and during its most active period of production contributed more than half of the output of the district. Other important locations, though far less productive than the above, were the Maude S, Deep Down, the Deadwood and the Pacific.

With over one year experience, Western Deep Levels Ltd., reports satisfactory operation with new features of its 200,000 ton per month gold reduction plant. Western Deep is Anglo American group's newest gold mine. It is situated 43 miles west of Johannesburg on the West Wits Line and will ultimately be extracting ore from a depth of 13,000 ft. Although the plant was put in production in March 1962, after a three month break-in period, construction of the fifth milling section was not completed until last month.

Every 12 minutes, a cable operated skip car appears from beneath the desert surface of Arizona's Papago Indian Reservation. The Papagos have become quite used to the car, particularly those whose paychecks depend upon its regular appearance. The 24-ton capacity skip or tramcar hauls copper ore out of the North Decline of Hecla Mining Company's new mine about 30 mi south of Casa Grande. While there's nothing particularly glamorous about the skip itself, the railroad system upon which it travels is interesting because of the unconventional way it was built.

Attention has been given to the sources and supply of the raw vegetal matter and the conditions of its submission to the process of sedimentation. An original and most valuable review has been made of the more important or significant chemical compounds originally contained in the organic dct,ris, and of the biochemical changes undergone by the latter during deposition. Consideration also has been given to the factors controlling the selective biochemical decomposition, in whole or in part, of this debris, and the deposition, as sediments, of the undecom-posed plant structures and compounds, together with more or less of the so-called "ulmic," or "humic," organic decomposition products in colloidal so1ution. Biochemical Changes End in Peat Formation The biochemical process terminates in the peat stage of coal formation, and with the cessation of this process organic sedimentation is completed. All subsequent changes result from geological causes and conditions. The deposits are in the form of peats of different types, organic muds, oozes, etc. They are essentially uncompressed and are wholly uncon-solidated, and their water content is great, amounting to over 85 per cent, near the surface of the deposit. Many of the chemical compounds remain as in the once living organisms; others are biochemically broken down and new ones formed. Geochemical and Geophysical Changes in Buried Deposits Subsequent Changes " Dynamochemical" The changes which subsequently take place through dehydration, lithification, and simultaneous progressive chemical alteration, by which organic sediments are advanced to brown lignite, subbituminous, bituminous, semianthracitic, and graphitic ranks, are geochemical and geophysical, and the process, which really is metamorphic,2 takes place under dynamic influences. IN many of the early investigations of the aging of titanium alloys, it was observed that the retained beta phase could be aged to a high hardness without an apparent change in microstructure; moreover, in some alloys it was found that even a very rapid quench produced beta having an anomalously high hardness. What appeared to be hard beta phase was designated as "beta prime," to distinguish it from the softer normal retained beta phase. Frost and co-workers'.' demonstrated that the increased hardness is caused by the formation of a metastable phase, omega, which can be identified from its X-ray diffraction pattern. This reaction also has been studied by Brotzen, et a1.,3 and the structure of the omega phase has been published by Silcock, et al.," and by Austin and Doig.3 The X-ray diffraction analysis by Austin and Doig indicated that omega is low in alloy content, approaching the composition of the stable alpha. The aging process proceeds by the path Thus, overaging results in the formation of alpha and the ultimate disappearance of omega. This is accompanied by a decrease in hardness and a recovery of ductility. The present work represents a study of the aging process in a high-purity Ti-6.4 Mn alloy, in which optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and hardness data were correlated. The specimens, 1/8-in. sections cut from 1/4-in.-diam rod, were heated in argon to a temperature just into the beta field (810°C), held for 1 hr, and water-quenched. The aging samples were heated in air for 1 hr at 300 to 500°C. The specimens were ground and mechanically polished, finishing with alternate etching and polishing on a slow-speed wheel to remove disturbed metal from the surface. The surface finally was swab-etched, rinsed with tap water, and air-dried. The etchant used was an aqueous solution containing 1 1/2 pct HF and 3 1/2 pct HNO3. This procedure is identical with that used for preparing metallographic specimens, except that the optimum degree of final etching required for electron microscopy may vary from that used for light microscopy. Metal replicas, backed with silica, were prepared from plastic strip-pings for examination with the electron microscope. Complete details of the procedures used for preparing these replicas are available elsewhere." Fig. 1 shows a comparison between the structures revealed by the electron microscope and those obtained by conventional light microscopy. Hardness and X-ray diffraction data are listed in Table I. No evidence of a second phase is apparent in the optical micrographs for the as-quenched sample, or for the specimens aged at 300 or 400°C; fine alpha particles can be seen in the specimen aged at 500°C. In the electron micrographs, visible equiaxed pocks appear in the as-quenched specimen, and, with increasing density, in the samples aged at 300 and 400°C. After aging at 500°C, the structure becomes markedly coarser and develops an oriented appearance of a second phase, coincident with the appearance of visible alpha particles in the light micrographs. These observations are confirmed by X-ray diffraction and hardness data. In these specimens, aged for 1 hr, the intensity of the omega pattern increases to a maximum at the 400°C aging temperature, corresponding to maximum hardness and the maximum density of pocks in the electron micrographs. At this point the beta phase shows a definite enrichment in Mn. At 500°C, little or no omega re-

Man is born on Mother Earth without knowledge or skills. Soon he finds physical needs for food, clothing, shelter, exercise, and relaxation. His personal needs are self-expression, new experiences, and amusements, while his social needs have been classified as work, status, security, friendship, companionship, and love. He finds himself infinitesimal in comparison to the whole. Often- times when he feels smug, he is actually riding for a fall. And nothing is much worse than frustrated man. The postwar world does not provide the Utopia of peace and prosperity of which man had dreamed. In fact, it seems that the sacrifices and waste of that great struggle are being lost in the morass of stupidity, selfishness, and cupidity which unfortunately are still the most conspicuous traits of the human race. Perhaps it is too soon to expect the blessiilgs which are supposed to appear in a peaceful world, and man's thought is clouded with a pessimism engendered by the conflict itself, in which all activities tend to enhance his pessimistic nature. Must man submit that it is a law of nature for nations to go to war? The war has demonstrated that when faced with a common danger, peoples differing in antecedents, language, forms of government, and resources can unite for a time, pool their skills and abilities, and emerge victorious from a contest unparalleled in magnitude, ruthlessness, carnage, waste, and cost. The power plant of the Burro Mountain Copper Co. is located near Tyrone, N. M., at 5,950 ft. elevation. It is interesting because it uses the largest stationary Diesel engines in the United States. The general layout of the plant is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The building is of steel-frame construction with hollow-tile walls and corrugated-iron roof; the floor is concrete and all windows have steel frames, making a fireproof building. The building is made to accommodate one more electric generator unit which is being installed; also two 4,000-cu. ft. air compressors direct-connected to three-cylinder engines with the same size cylinders as the electric units. The power plant consists of two 815-kva., 60-cycle, three-phase, 6,600-volt, 180-r.p.m. generators, direct-connected to five-cylinder, two-cycle Diesel engines; the necessary circulating pumps for cooling water, cooling towers and oil storage tanks. A portion of the power is used in the same building as the generating units to run one of two 200-kw. rotary converters delivering 260-volt direct current, and a 2,500-cu. ft. air compressor, delivering air at 95 lb. pressure, direct-connected to a 400-hp., 6,600-volt, three-phase synchronous motor. The remainder of the power is used to run a 1,500-ton concentrating mill 3 ½ miles from the power house, various hoists, pumps and motors about the mines and the lighting and water-works of the town of Tyrone. The direct current is used for electric traction in the mine, also to run hoists and motors that were installed before the new power plant was built. Due to the large hoists that take starting peaks of 250 kw. and the 10-ton electric locomotive that takes at times 150 kw., the load is extremely variable, as shown in. Fig. 3.

This paper gives a brief account of the geologic and production problems encountered in the Grass Creek oil field, the methods used in their solution, and the beneficial results obtained from the work. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance received from J. H. Pearson and Miss Ninettta A. Davis in the collection of the data and the preparation of the cross-sections. Permission for its publication was given by the officials of the Midwest Refining Co. and the Ohio Oil Co. The Grass Creek oil field is located in Ts. 98-99 W., R. 46 N., Hot Springs County, Wyo. The productive area includes about 2 1/2 mi. (4 km.) on the apex of a great anticlinal fold occupying more than 150 sq. mi. Fig. 1 shows the structural contours of the field. Oil was dicovered in the field in June, 1914; development proceeded rapidly and production rose to a maximum in 1918. The marketed production has been approximately as follows: Barrels Barrels 1915.................... 94,073.5 1918................... 2,946,774.27 1916................... 1,404,183.97 1919................... 2,000,584.84 1917.................... 2,780,697.51 1920................... 1,485,080.94 About 350 wells, 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) deep, have been drilled to reach the upper oil sands; two companies, the Ohio Oil Co. and the Midwest Refining Co., operate the entire field. The principal producing sands in the field are members of the Frontier Formation, a series of sands and shales occuring in the upper portion of the Colorado Group of the Upper Cretaceous seriee. These Frontier, or "Wall Creek" sands are also productive in the Salt Creek, Big Muddy, and Elk Basin fields and, therefore, are much the most important reservoirs of light oil in Wyoming. At Grass Creek, the sands in the Formation are more numerous than in the other fields and much less uniform in thickness and character. The subject of this paper is one to which there are many references in the literature on the manufacture of steel in the open-hearth furnace, but few actual experimental data have been published. For that reason, the presentation of results obtained from two open-hearth heats where attempts were made to measure the sulfur absorption will be of considerable interest and value. The two heats on which the experiments were made were Armco ingot-iron heats and differ from the usual open-hearth heat of medium- or mild-carbon steel in that the refining is carried further; in this product the carbon and manganese are reduced practically to traces. In most other respects, and especially in respect to the absorption of sulfur from the producer gas, the two heats are typical of usual open-hearth practice. The object of the experiments made on the first Armco iron heat was to determine the fluctuation of the composition of the metal bath and the slag throughout the course of the heat, with especial reference to the variations in sulfur. It was hoped to determine whether there was an increase in sulfur in the bath from the producer gas and if so at what stage in the process the increase occurred. The experimental method consisted of charging analyzed scrap and pig iron, so that the sulfur in the charge could be calculated. Then, throughout the duration of the heat, metal and slag samples were takcn every half hour, beginning as soon as there was enough molten metal to take a sample. These samples were analyzed; the results are given in Table 1. All domestic scrap was used and the charge was made up as follows: Head End Finish Pounds Pound Pig iron........................ 36,300 Pig iron....................... 23,900 Sheet scrap bundles............. 36,200 Sheet bars..................... 23,900 Sheet bm..................... 40;200 The total charge, exclusive of the re-pig added near the end of the heat, was 160,500 Ib. The limestone charged was 21,400 Ib., or 13½ per cent.

WHEN Magma Copper Company in 1952 set about finding $100,000,000 to finance the project of developing and equipping the property of its lusty progeny, the San Manuel Copper Corporation, A. J. McNab, president and guiding genius for both companies (and incidentally a mining engineer by profession), determined that he would avoid the mistake frequently made in such circumstances, of underestimating the cost, and thereby running short of funds before the job was completed. The fear that this might happen was one of the reasons why insurance companies, one potent source of "big" money, were reluctant to finance the enterprise. How, they asked themselves, would Magma, a relatively small company, get additional money in such a contingency? Insurance officials' thumbs were turned down. Conditions Imposed by R.F.C. The upshot was the negotiation by Mr. McNab for San Manuel of a contract with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, dated July 10, 1952, whereby needed monies in amount up to $94,000,000 would be advanced as a loan, bearing 5 per cent interest. Arrangements were made for the separate financing of the new $10,000,000 town, needed for the project, through the Del E. Webb Construction Company of Phoenix, Arizona, and M.O.W. Homes, Incorporated, of Los Angeles. Thus the $94,000,000 drawing account was believed ample to provide for building the railroad, the mine plant, the concentrator, and the smelter, as well as for the underground development of the mine needed to start production. The magnetic iron ores of the Rees & Wilder tract, Unaka Mountains, East Tennessee, and North Carolina, so far as examined by me, are peculiar in containing considerable quantities of the mineral zircon in dark red-brown crystals, ranging in size from one-tenth of an inch, or less, to five-tenths of an inch in length. As zircons are decomposed by fusion with alkalies, the constituents may exert some favorable influence upon the iron product, which is generally acknowledged to be of superior quality.
