FELIX E. WORMSER was born in Santa Barbara on Oct. 31,1894, so is one of the youngest members of the Board, only H. D. Wilde t 39) and W. M. Peirce (43) being his juniors. After graduating from the Columbia School of Mines as an E.M. in 1912, he went West and worked for the Snake River Mines, the Baker Mines Co., and the Cornucopia Mines CO., all in Oregon. Then for a year or two he was the youngest U. S. Mineral Surveyor in Oregon. In 1918 he was in the Army from which he was honorably discharged as a Second Lieutenant. Early in 1919 he joined the staff of the Bureau of Mines, at Washington, assisting in compiling reports and in War Minerals Relief work. His acquaintance there with J. E. Spurr led to his joining the staff of the Engineering and Mining Journal as assistant editor in April, 1920. He specialized in market studies and assisted in the compilation of the Journal's metal quotations until June, 1925, when he resigned to engage in active mining examination and consulting' work in the Northwest for H. H. Armstead. Three years later he returned to New York at the time of the formation of the Lead Indus- tries Association, becoming its Secretary and Treasurer, a position that he has since held.

EVER since his college days at the University of Iowa, the professional interest of Morris Morgan Leighton has centered on geology, and he now heads the State Geological Survey of Illinois. Just 52 years ago--on Aug. 4, 1887-he was born at Wellman, Iowa. He remained at the State university for his Master's degree, awarded in 1913. A two-year fellowship at the University of Chicago led to a Ph. D. degree, after which Dr. Leighton went out to Seattle as instructor in geology at the University of Washington during 1915-'16. He returned to Iowa as assistant professor of geology at Iowa State Teachers' College for a year, followed by another year at Seattle, after which he returned permanently to the Middle West, first as acting professor of geology at Ohio State and then, from 1919 to 1923, as assistant professor of geology at the University of Illinois and geologist for the Illinois Geological Survey. Of the latter organization he has been chief since 1923, with no present teaching duties. As a result of the successful work of the Survey, notably in non-metallics and in the initiation and stimulation of the recent oil activities in the southern part of the State, it is soon to have a new building with modern laboratory facilities.

IRon oxide (FeO) plays an extremely important part in the manufacture of steel. In the open-hearth furnace and the Bessemer converter it is the chemically predominant compound and controls to a large extent both the operation of the furnaces and the composition and quality of their products. Almost all of the refining action is carried out through the medium of FeO, which oxidizes carbon, manganese, silicon and phosphorus. At the end of any open-hearth or Bessemer heat the steel contains dissolved iron oxide, which must be wholly or partly eliminated. The type of deoxidation product depends on the amount of dissolved iron oxide and on the deoxidizer used. After the heat has been deoxidized and while it is being teemed, iron oxide diffuses from the ladle slag into the metal, causing losses of deoxidizer and increase in iron oxide content of the steel. It is generally believed that non-metallic inclusions are responsible for a great many failures of steel in service and for decreased yield of steel during rolling. The basis of most non-metallic inclusions is dissolved iron oxide. This investigation was undertaken in order to determine the amount of iron oxide that will dissolve in iron under various conditions. Steel-making slags are complex and it has been thought best to determine solubility under simple slags as a first step. During the year 1936, a new high record was established for Peruvian production, the total amounting to 17,594,689 bbl., which brought the cumulative production of the country up to 205 million barrels. The 1936 figure represents an increase of 530,288 bbl. over that of 1935. The property of the International Petroleum Co. contributed 369,577 bbl. of this increase and the Lobitos property 158,233. Exploration work in the country was continued. The Selden Breck Co. examined a strip of the National Reserve in eastern Peru from Tambo del Sur to the Rio Pachitea. This company was granted a concession for a term of four years embracing approximately 50,000 acres near the confluence of the Rio Pachitea and the Rio Ucayali. During the year, the Peruvian Government commenced drilling a well on one of the reserved zones at Zorritos. At the end of the year, this well had reached a depth of 1300 feet. La Rrea-Parinas Estate.—Production on the La Brea-Parinas Estate of the International Petroleum Company, Ltd., reached an all-time high in 1936 of 15,126,491 bbl., an increase of 369,577 bbl. over the 1935 record. The total production from 1890 to 1936 was 163,668,014 barrels.

Vanadium is generally spoken of as a rare element; but, even in the light of our resources as known a couple of years ago, this description could be accepted in a qualified sense only. In fact, vanadium is very widely distributed, being a constituent of most clays, while even caustic soda has been shown to contain almost regularly a minute proportion of it, although the quantity in each case is so small as to render impracticable the extraction of the metal therefrom with profit. The opening-up of a large deposit of vanadium sulphide ore in South America has put a new phase on the commercial outlook of vanadium, the technical value of which for the improrement of steel has been proved by rigorous scientific investigation. Through the generosity of Sir Robert Hadfield, Honorary Member, the Directors of the American Institute of Mining Engineers are enabled to announce the Hadfield Research Prize of $1,000 for the best contribution to the publications of the Institute upon the general subject of The Different Forms and Combinations of Carbon with Iron, including those in Iron Alloys. The prize will be awarded at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1916, to the best paper upon this subject which is presented to the Institute before Nov. 1, 1915, provided such paper is deemed worthy by the Institute's Iron and Steel Committee. The following suggestions are also added for the guidance of those who may take part in this research. While' it is not desired to define closely the exact lines or scope of the proposed research, as it is advisable to make these as broad as possible, the object in mind maybe said to be generally as follows: To elaborate and find out the best methods of determining the forms of carbon in steel or iron, including those in iron alloys. A portion of the work would probably be a continuation of the researches which have in the past been carried out by Jullien, Abel, Muller, Ledebur, T. Sterry Hunt, Akerman, Arnold, Stead, E. D. Campbell, Hogg, Parry, Upton, and others. In a generic way, metallurgists now speak of carbides, sub-carbides, double carbides, special carbides, and other combinations. It is very desirable that these should be accurately defined and understood. It is also desirable to know whether there are other or new forms; if so, can these be separated and their characteristics obtained. It may be interesting to point out that the carbon compounds now definitely known are stated to number over 80,000. It is very probable, therefore, that there is room for much valuable and useful research to be carried out with the object of increasing our knowledge of the various combinations of carbon with iron, as probably some of these are still unknown

Awakened public interest in efforts to conserve natural resources will certainly be appreciated by the members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and a discussion upon conservation may well form a part of one of the Institute meetings, for the records of papers and discussions which appear in the 38 volumes of its Transactions are replete with evidence of efforts in this direction. Every process which reduces the fuel consumed or the power applied per unit of product; every utilization of waste material, or employment of that formerly rejected, to obtain something of value; every feature of construction or operation which lessens the labor required or increases the output per employee, is an advance in the direction of true conservation. This may not appear from the records of late conferences or from published articles, in which the effort seems to be concen-

PERHAPS the most interesting paper of the subsidence session on Monday morning was that by Roland D. Parks entitled "Yieldable Metal Props for Underground Support." This paper described the development of a telescoping prop made from two pieces of pipe. The lower and larger in diameter has cast in it a soft metallic alloy which is slowly extruded through an orifice in the upper and smaller piece of pipe. In this way, the length of the prop decreases gradually as the load from the roof increases. The stress-strain diagram for these props, as tested in the laboratory, is almost ideal, and can be duplicated satisfactorily in successive tests. They have not yet been tested underground. Another paper of much interest was presented by Prof. P. B. Bucky. It is an addition to his series on structural models as applied to mining and was entitled "Effect of Approximately Vertical Cracks in the Behavior of Hori¬zontally Lying Roof Strata." It was illustrated by motion pictures of a model under test. After explaining the un¬derlying theory, the apparatus and the mode of testing, Prof. Bucky set forth the effect of vertical cracks in a mine roof, as follows: (a) the wider the crack, the weaker the roof; (b) where the sides of the crack are in juxtaposition, there is little weakening of the roof; (c) grouting cracks whose sides are not in contact restores the strength of the roof until it may be as strong as, or stronger than the uncracked roof. Small paper props helped sustain the roof. Both the nature of the material and its bonding affect its behavior under stress.

AERIAL photographic surveying and mapping is not new or unknown to geologists. However, it has been utilized but little before, principally because it is only within the last few months that practical means of adapting this method to the requirements of petroleum companies have been discovered. No American aerial survey company has taken up aerial surveying and mapping as an engineering service to be offered to petroleum companies and their geologists for use in undeveloped and jungle-covered petroleum areas. This method of surveying and mapping, however, is used by the War Department, the U. S. Reclamation Service, and Geological Survey, and the corresponding Departments of the Canadian Government. ADVANTAGES OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEYING AND MAPPING The advantages of aerial photographic surveying and mapping to petroleum companies and their geologists are many. One of the most valuable is presented in the very first phase, or the exploration period. It is assumed that, when convinced that petroleum possibilities are present, a petroleum company has secured a concession of 8000 sq. mi. of unexplored area in Eastern Venezuela. The company may either have the entire area surveyed and mapped by the aerial photographic method, or send its chief field geologist up in an airplane so that he, from-an aerial reconnaissance, may reject certain portions that, for geological reasons, the company would not be interested in. He will then point out the regions that are to be surveyed and mapped. After the air-work is completed, the results are brought down, developed, and printed; then the resulting "contact prints" are given to the field geologist. They may be roughly assembled to give a general idea of the property in its entirety, or they are in shape to be examined in adjoining pairs under the stereo-scope. With this instrument, the geologist is enabled to make a minute examination of surface indications. The work of assembling and constructing a complete general or detailed map, according to the scales desired by the petroleum company and for the later office use, is continued by the aerial photographic company.

OVER 55 years ago, Sieverts and Hagenacker1 and Donnan and shaw2 made determinations of the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver, over a rather short range of temperatures (973° to 1125°C), using quartz bulbs, mainly at 1 atm. From the results of their investigations, Mizikar, Grace, and parlee3 plotted % O vs 1/T and obtained the following straight-line equation for solubility at 1 atm: log % O = 723.7/T - 1.0949 Recent work on the kinetics of the Ag-O2 system394 indicated there might have been some error due to reaction with the direct heated silica bulbs. Thus it became important to redetermine the solubility with the silver contained in a better refractory such as alumina, and by induction heating where the walls of the container were not so strongly heated. It was also desirable to extend the temperature range. A modified Sieverts apparatus of fairly standard type was used except that a special type of reaction tube was employed, Fig. 1. Dried argon with a guaranteed purity of 99.9 pet, and dried medical-grade oxygen with a guaranteed purity of 99.6 pet containing a little nitrogen, were the gases used. The measuring system consisted essentially of a manometer and a water-jacketed 100-cc gas buret with an open-end vertical tube parallel to the buret. This tube has the same diameter as the buret in order to give the same capillary effect on the mercury. A screw leveling device was used with the buret leveling bulb to help provide accurate pressure readings. A 2-mm ID capillary line connected the buret to the reaction chamber, helping to reduce the dead volume, which was determined with argon. The heating medium was a 2.5-kw output induction furnace. The induction coil was made of a 3/16-in. copper tubing with eight turns and an inside diameter of 4 cm. The reaction bulb was made of a quartz tube 18 cm long and 3 cm in inside diameter, Fig. 1. Inside the quartz tube were two alumina crucibles (Mor-ganite Triangle RR, XN10 and XN5) one inside the other. Below these two was an alumina disk. The disk prevented the corners of the outer crucible from expanding against the quartz tube. The solid sample (99.994 + pet Ag), which had been previously cleaned by air oxidation and repeated removal of scum, was placed inside the inner crucible. An alumina disk with a hole at the center covered the two crucibles. In order to decrease the dead volume, an evacuated quartz "filler" tube was placed on top of the crucible cover. The part of the reaction tube above the spherical joint was made up of Pyrex glass with a flat glass top. It was here that a prism was placed to facilitate the use of an optical pyrometer, previously calibrated at the freezing point of silver. An old philosopher once said, "God grant me the serenity to accept those things I cannot change, the courage to change those which I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." It is time to take stock of how the human race has progressed-whether the trend now points toward greater evils or finer things. It is time that we stop fooling ourselves and put into effect a program of "real" conservation. By this it is not meant that we limit our concept to planting new forests, preserving wild life or preventing soil erosion, but rather taking stock of the expectancy of our resources, expanding human resourcefulness and effecting careful utilization and replacing of, or producing substitutes for, material resources. Man is still dependent upon energy and matter in certain usable forms, despite the fact that energy is inherent in all matter. Until such progress is made that the energy contained in all matter can be controlled, man must continue to utilize the common fuels. Advancement of research in atomic energy has cast a gleam of hope for future use of the tremendous energy contained in the atom. Use of atomic power for industrial pursuits would open up limitless resources of power. This energy, of course, is a two-edged sword, since man's progress and his means of destruction have always evolved parallel to each other. Thus it is estab-

DESPITE the large amount of study which has been devoted to the subject our present knowledge of the copper-oxygen system remains incomplete and unsatisfactory in many respects. This applies particu-larly to those regions in which solid metallic copper exists. The primary object of the present paper is the contribution of new information relative to the solid solubility of oxygen (or cuprous oxide) in copper at atmospheric pressure, together with certain observations in the low-pressure regions of the system. It seems appropriate also to present a brief summary of the outstanding previous work on the constitution of mixtures of copper with its lowest oxide in order to show the relation between the new facts and the system as a whole. The earliest recorded investigations of the copper-oxygen system are those of M. S. Lucas (1) § and of M. Chevillot(2) in 1819 and 1820. Lucas believed that liquid copper is capable of dissolving its oxide, but neither he nor Chevillot was able to furnish convincing proof of this property. It was not until 1866 that T. Graham° definitely established the existence of such a solubility. Nine years later W. Hampe(4) measured its extent and roughly outlined the copper-rich portion of the system. The first really precise examination of the constitutional relationship between copper and cuprous oxide, however, was that of E. Heyn(5) who in 1900 published a temperature-concentration diagram covering the range from 0 to 10 per cent of cuprous oxide at atmospheric pressure. Within these limits of composition cuprous oxide was found to dissolve in liquid copper, forming at 3.4 to 3.5 per cent a eutectic which melted at 1065° C. R. E. Slade and F. D. The School of Mineral Industries is dedicated to education in mineral conservation and research by which the means may be found to make conservation effective. This includes diligent search for mineral truths and the energetic discovery, complete recovery, and maximum utilization of irreplaceable mineral resources. Standards of living depend upon two factors: human resources-intelligence, imagination, initiative, know-how, work; and natural resources-plants, animals, and minerals, including water, air, soil, heat and light from the sun, and all other such resources that are useful to man. Human relationships have not kept pace with scientific achievement; as a result man, in desperation, wittingly, premeditatively sacrifices freedom for security. Many natural resources, through overproduction, mismanagement, and greed, have definitely moved over into the exhausted or exhaustible category. The United States cannot maintain present standards of living on an agricultural economy alone, and serious harm can ensue if there are marked disproportions in numbers and relationships between city and rural populations. The most materialistic New Yorker must see virtue in bucolic loveliness. The United States is rated wasteful and inconsistent most of the time. It does not make sense to dole out through the keyhole what a wage earner can bring through the open door; to raise wages to lower the cost

An investigation of trends in exploration expenditures for a selected group of mining companies was undertaken for the interval 1968-1971. These trends were compared with financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and the implications of these trends are indicated. The sample consists of 21 mining companies, of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the ex- traction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining, such as oil and gas sales. No companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in the sample. This definition held up in 1968, however, its strict application became more difficult through the years. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business and deriving a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining.

The useful minerals can be subdivided into two large groups. One comprises those which are mined because of their chemical composition. They represent the natural resources of certain materials or of energy (coal). The second group is used not because of their chemical composition but because of certain physical properties or combinations of physical properties. A large number of minerals are mined because of their hardness, their electrical and thermal properties, their color or plasticity. There has been increasing recognition of the value of mineral synthesis during the past 30 years. This is illustrated by the development of improved aircraft spark plugs and chemical porcelain about the time of the first World War. During World War II the impact of crystal chemistry upon ceramics became most pronounced. New ceramic bodies were tailor-made, such as those designed with a high dielectric constant and low power loss, for use in high-voltage, high-frequency communication. In the field of refractories special materials were needed for unusual heat-resisting service in jet and rocket engines, and in the processing of fissionable materials. The oxidation of Cu2S in oxygen and the sulfating of Cu2O in oxygen-sulfur dioxide atmospheres was carried out under a variety of conditions. The oxidation of Cu2S was found to be retarded by entrapment of SO, and O2, which stabilized internal sulfates for long periods of time. The course of the reaction was followed by measuring weight changes and also by SO, evolution. Sulfating of Cu2O was a maximum at ratios of SO, to O2 approximating maximum SO, production. At elevated temperatures SO, was found to increase the rate of oxidation of Cu2 O to CuO even though sulfates did not form. All sulfating reactions followed the parabolic rate law indicating diffusion. MANY studies of the roasting of copper sulfides have been reported in recent years. Diev et al.1 investigated the roasting of chalcocite (Cu2S) in air, and oxygen enriched air. Lewis et al.2 also studied the oxidation of natural and synthetic chalcocite in air and oxygen atmospheres and their studies indicated that the maximum formation of water soluble sulfates occurred at approximately 450oC. Ashcroft3 reported that oxide production during the roasting of chalcocite resulted only from secondary decomposition of sulfates which were formed as primary products. peretti4 refuted this claim by showing that a layer of Cu2O appeared directly adjacent to the Cu2S during roasting of cylindrical briquettes of cupric sulfide, CuS. The linear advance of the Cu2S-Cu2O interface was used as a measure of the kinetics of the roasting reaction. The reactions proposed were: 2 CuS—Cu2S + 1/2 S2 [4-1] 1/2 S2 + O24 SO2 [4-2] cuzs +3/2 O2 4 Cu2O + SO2 [4-3] cu2o + 1/2 O2—2 cuo [4-4] At temperatures above 663oC, CuO was the only final solid phase reported. Below 663" C increasing amounts of sulfate were found mixed with the CuO. McCabe and Morgan5 investigated the roasting of discs of synthetic chalcocite and reported the following sequence of products beginning at the sulfide surface: Cu2O, a mixture of Cu2O and CuSO4, Cum,, CuO . CuSO4, and CuO. The principal reactions were reported to be: Cu2S + 3/2 O2-Cu2O + SO2 [5-1] CU2O + 2 SO2 + 3/2 O2—2 CUSO4 [5-21 2 CUSO4— CUO . cum, + SO3 [ 5-31 cuo . cuso4—-2 cuo + SO, [ 5-41 Eq.15-11 supports the claim of Peretti, Eq. [4-31, that CuzO is formed directly from Cu2S rather than as a secondary product from a sulfate as suggested by Ashcroft. On the other hand CuO was found to form as a secondary product from the decomposition of copper sulfate and basic copper sulfate, Eqs. [5-31 and [5-41. The formation of sulfates was explained by McCabe and morgan5 to be a direct reaction of Cu2O with 0, and SO, or SO, at distinct regions in which the partial pressures of each were such as to form the sulfate. Thornhill and pidgeon6 roasted both natural and synthetic chalcocite grains in air at temperatures between 420" and 550° C. They found a dense primary oxidation layer in contact with the sulfide. A secondary layer of porous oxidation products was found to expand with roasting time. The oxide products were leached away and the remaining core was studied by X-ray diffraction. The X-ray patterns showed an increased conversion of chalcocite to digenite with time. Digenite,7 a defect structure of cuprous sulfide, occurs naturally as Cu,-,S where x = 0.12 to 0.45, with an average analysis of Cu, ,S. The mechanism of digenite formation was proposed as: Cu2S + oxygen—Cu1-8S + 0.1 Cu2O [6-1] Cuj.eS + oxygen—0.9 Cu2S + SO2 [6-2] It is apparent from the above studies that the oxidation of Cu2S, ultimately ending in CuO, may be divided into ihree general stages (all of which may occur simultaneously): 1) primary oxidation to Cu2O; 2) secondary sulfate formation; and 3) sulfate decomposition. Consequently reactions of O2 and SO, with Cu20 constitute important aspects of the roasting of chalcocite. Virtually no studies have been made regarding sulfating reactions involving Cu,O. The general drift of the discussion as to the relative merits of pressure- and exhaust-fans has resulted, if we may judge from the prevailing practice, largely in favor of the latter. The subject has been hitherto treated, however, with special reference to highly gaseous mines, the effect of the form of ventilation upon dust-explosions having been too little considered. Even in mines containing practically no gas, dust-explosions may occur; and if, as I believe, pressure-fans are to be preferred for their effect upon dust, it may be worth while to reopen the debate, and to challenge the advisability of exhaust-ventilation under certain conditions. There are several forms of colliery-ventilation, which may be described as follows: Plain or simple pressure-ventilation, in which the fan acts as a pressure-fan, and the movement of coal is unobstructed at the surface by doors or equivalent devices in drifts or shafts, the traveling and haulage. thus being in the return-current. Plain exhaust-ventilation, in which the fan acts as an exhaust-fan, the movement of coal being likewise unobstructed at the surface, and the traveling and haulage being in the intake.

COLOMBIA has an almost ideal situation with respect to the world's markets, being only a short distance from the Panama canal and the West Indies. The sailing distance from its Caribbean ports to New York is less than that from Tampico. Geographically, Colombia consists of three systems of broad mountain ranges separated by two long narrow valleys. The Cauca River valley separates the Western or Coastal range from the Central range. On the west side of the Coastal range are the Atrato and San Juan Rivers. The Central and Eastern ranges are separated by the Magdalena River valley. In the department of Santander the Eastern range divides, one branch continuing northward as the Cordillera of Perija, the other turning eastward across Venezuela as the Cordillera of Merida. Between these ranges is the great basin occupied by Lake Maracaibo. These valleys consist mainly of long narrow reëntrants or tongues of Tertiary sediments between the older rocks of the mountain ranges. The late Miocene and younger sediments seem to have been deposited in separated basins, but the Cretaceous and possibly some earlier Tertiary strata were laid down more or less continuously over a great part of .Colombia and Venezuela. These strata were subsequently folded into the present ranges. The deposition of the Cretaceous and of some of the Tertiary was in a great sea, the main land mass being in Brazil, with land probably along some of the cores of the present mountain systems. The sediments, except the Lower Cretaceous, vary markedly in character and thickness. An illustration is seen in the massive series of non-marine conglomerates and sandstones of the upper Magdalena River valley, near Honda, which are almost wholly wanting in the coastal sections where marine sediments prevail. The oldest rocks bearing on the search for oil are the black carbonaceous and bituminous shales, limestones, and cherts of the upper part of the Lower Cretaceous. These probably are the main source of oil in both Colombia and Venezuela. They include thick bodies of true "oil shale. Above the carbonaceous and bituminous beds, lies a series of many thousand feet of clastic sediments. The most noticeable and easily recognizable formation among these clastic sediments is the "coal-bearing series," which may be either upper Cretaceous or Eocene. The
