Drilling in West Texas during 1941 was more active than in any year since 1937, a total of 2325 wells having been drilled. Pre-Permian exploration was the greatest in the history of the area; 106 wells tested pre-Permian formations during the year. Wildcatting reached the peak since 1937, with 135 wildcats, of which 20 per cent were producers. The wells were drilled to a greater average depth than in any previous year. Slim-hole drilling was the common practice, using drilling equipment that is largely portable. Because of deeper drilling, more attention was paid to mud fluids, especially the use of materials to reduce water filtration. There has been slight improvement in the protection of the pay horizons while drilling by the use of reverse circulation, and drilling-in with oil as well as low water-filtration muds. The practice of setting and cementing the oil strings through the producing formation and perforating opposite the pay zones has increased in the fields producing from sands. It is doubtful whether this practice is of unusual value in dolomitic limestone fields. There have been few if any technological improvements in obtaining necessary information on the pay sections penetrated, by coring, core analyses, better sampling, and more detailed drilling time. However, more operators are beginning to realize the necessity of good samples. For a proper study of the reservoirs in West Texas, it is essential that better samples be obtained, that more core analyses be run, and that better methods of obtaining drilling time be initiated. It should be noted that increased drilling speeds and slim-hole drilling have tended to reduce coring and core recovery and have not aided in obtaining good subsurface samples. In fact, fast drilling speeds and slim-hole drilling have reduced the cost of drilling operations, but with the sacrifice of much needed subsurface information. Larger quantities of slower-reacting acid are being used per well. There has been improvement in shooting, in that a greater number of quarts per foot have been used and an attempt has been made to concentrate the shots opposite the pay zone. The use of mud logging to determine the characteristics of the pay section increased considerably over the year 1940. There has been a slight increase in obtaining reservoir information in the new fields, such as bottom-hole sampling, bottom-hole pressures, and records of gas, oil, and water withdrawals. However, there is great need for more data on these subjects, particularly accurate information regarding gas and water volumes. There are three repressuring projects and a fourth is nearly ready for operation in the Kermit field. There is one repressur-ing project in the Payton field and one in the North Ward field. So far, the gas-injection projects have not shown very impressive results. As yet, there are no water-flooding projects or water-disposal projects in West Texas. In order to provide a clear picture of the development of the sink-and-float process of concentration as applied to the iron ores of Minnesota, a few pertinent facts should be brought out concerning the ores and the products of concentration. Iron ore is primarily a cheap commodity handled in immense quantities. The price of iron ore at present, based on a natural iron content of 51.5 per cent, varies from $2.55 to $2.70 per gross ton f.0.b. cars at the mine or washing plant in Minnesota. Last year 92,000,000 gross tons were shipped from the Lake Superior district (Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin) to the furnaces. Concentrated iron ores have no greater value per unit of iron content than ores that can be mined and shipped direct from the shafts or open pits. For years only the higher grades of concentrating ores could be treated and sold in competition with the immense reserves of direct shipping ore available. These higher-grade "straight wash" ores required only the simplest treatment; namely, the washing out of fine sand from coarse ore particles. As the exhaustion of the " straight wash " ore is reached, rock is found replacing part of this sand, and the ore no longer responds to the former sizing treatment. Substantial tonnages of this marginal (jig ore) remained to be treated. Because of the limitations placed on concentrates by the furnaces—namely, low price of product and minimum amount of fines—iron-ore concentration oil has been and must continue to be a one-pass process. Only an increase in price or a change in structure of concentrates allowed by the ore consumer will encourage departure from this practice. Faced with the necessity of handling large tonnages, with the limitations mentioned, iron-ore research men have found their search for new and more efficient methods of treatment seriously handicapped and removed from the field of fine crushing. Sink-and-float treatment appeared to offer the best field in coarse concentration and has been proved by several plants to be well adapted to our problem. The use of ferrosilicon as a medium solid was decided upon. In our present practice, the ferrosilicon metal, carrying about 83 per cent iron, 15 per cent silicon and 2 per cent carbon and nonmagnetics, is crushed to pass 65 mesh and used without further sizing. When mixed with water the specific gravity of the medium may be controlled to within 0.02 per cent above or below the required gravity. Y.-I do not care to discuss Mr. Taggart's paper in the light of theory, as that has been very well done by Prof. Bell,1 but I should like to criticize some of his conclusions, in the light of actual operating practice at plants all over the country. 1. Mr. Taggart's first conclusion is that in crushing average ore, the character of the gangue has little effect on the efficiency of the mill. This, I believe, is not in accordance with the usual practice, since in crushing a hard ore the capacity will be much reduced below what it would be with a softer ore, while the power consumed will be practically independent of the character of the ore, being proportional only, to the load of ore and balls in the mill. 2. Mr. Taggart's second criticism is that the Hardinge mill is not suitable for grinding soft, tough material. In answer to this I might mention that the mill is being used for grinding tough, dnctile material, such as metallic aluminum, and also for grinding licorice root. 3. He says that the ball-mill works more efficiently on material of intermediate size, say 1/2 to 3/4 in., than on either coarser or finer feed.. This is true as to coarser feed. For the most efficient work, I believe that a ball-mill should be fed with material not coarser than 1 1/2 in.; it' will handle material up to 3 and even 4 in., but the reduction from 3 or 4 in. to 1 1/2 in. can be done much more cheaply and efficiently by rolls or disk crushers than in the ball-mill. 4. As to Mr. Taggart's fourth conclusion, that a greater ratio of reduction can be expected with feed of an intermediate size than with a coarse feed, I have not enough information to express an opinion. 5. His next conclusion is that steel balls are much more efficient crushing media than pebbles. Steel balls are undoubtedly more efficient for crushing coarse feed. On fine material they are also more efficient as to tons per horsepower crushed to 10-mesh, but on fine material I think it will be found that flint pebbles are cheaper than cast-iron balls, per ton of ore, although there will be a saving in power per ton by using cast iron instead of flint. The increased cost of crushing with cast iron will be due to the higher cost of iron at the present time. 6. Mr. Taggart's sixth conclusion coincides with present practice, that steel balls will grind as fine or finer than pebbles when working on the same feed.

The solubilities of the transition metals from scundium to nickel, inclusive, in liquid cadmium were determined by sampling saturated solutions. At 400°C these solubilities (ppm) are:Sc, Co, 22; Ni, 12000. Relative partial molal enthalpies and excess partial molal entropies at infinite dilution for the solutes Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co are compared zoitlz similar data for the post-transition metals. Three new intermetallic phases, ScCd,, TiCd, and Ti,Cd, encozaztered in the course of this work, are reported. Measurements of the solubility of the 3-d transition metals in liquid cadmium have been reported' only for iron. The present measurements for the entire series were made as an aid to the study of the systematics of alloy formation. EXPERIMENTAL The apparatus and sampling techniques used for the solubility determinations were similar to those described by Martin etal.' Temperatures were measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple sheathed in recrystallized alumina and immersed in the solution. The thermocouple was recalibrated periodically during the course of the investigation. Thermocouple voltages were measured to the neares 0.01 mv with a Rubicon model 2732 potentiometer. A scaled-down version of the apparratus, in which the total metal charge was about 90 g, was employed to measure the solubility of scandium. Two-mm ID Vycor filter pipets were used to sample the scandium-cadmiurn solutions; the samples weighed about 2g- Cadmium with a minimum purity of 99.95 pct was used; the only impurities detected spectrochem-ically were C'u and Mg, both less than 10 ppm. The purities of the other metals were: scandium, 99.9 pct; titanium. 99.92 pct; vanadium, 99.9 pct; chromium, 99).99 pct; manganese, 99.9+ pct; iron, 99.90 pct; cobalt, 99.95 pct; and nickel, 99.96 pct. Solidified melts were routinely analyzed spectro-graphically. No significant contamination by the crucible, sampling pipets, or other materials of construction was observed. The entire specimen obtained by sampling was dissolved to preclude analytical errors due to segregation on cooling. Colorimetric methods3 were used for the analyses of cobalt (2-nitroso-l-naphthol), manganese (permanganate), nickel (dimethylglyoxime), titanium (peroxide), and vanadium (thiocyanate).4 Chromium, iron, and scandium were neutron-irradiated to produce The dissolved samples were gamma-counted to determine solute concentration.For the separation of intermediate phases from cadmium-rich alloys selective leaching by saturated ammonium nitrate solutions was employed. The concentration of cadmium in the successive leaches was followed polarographically and the process was terminated when the rate of cadmium dissolution decreased markedly. For the further investigation of intermediate phases 1/4- in. diam powder compacts were pressed at 80,000 psi and annealed in argon at 315" to 330°C for 10 days. Larger quantities of alloys were prepared in sealed tantalum capsules heated in a rocking furnace.

The oxygen activity and concentration were measured in Fe-Cr-0 melts in equilibrium with an oxide phase at 1600°C (2912°F). The activity was determined by ,use of the following solid oxide -electrolyte galvanic cell CY-Cr8,(s) I ZrOz(CaO) I Fe-CY-G(saturated)(l) The oxygen concentration decreases with increasing Cr concentration to about 270 ppm 0 at about 7pct CY and then increases gradually. The activity coefficient of oxygen (fo) decreases with increasing Cr. In melts containing up to about 20 pct Cr, log f is approximately a linear function of wt pct Cr with a slope (e q 2) of —0.037. The activity of chromium was calculated and found to exhibit a small negative deviation from Raoult's law. From the activity and solubility data for low chromium melts, the free energy of formation of chromite, FeCr204, was found to be -79.8kcal per mole where pure liquid chromium and oxygen at I wt pct in Fe are the standard states. ThE effect of chromium on the chemical behavior of dissolved oxygen in liquid iron is of great importance in controlling the deoxidation of steels containing a significant amount of chromium. Chen and chipman' equilibrated Fe-Cr melts in the presence and absence of slag with hydrogen-water vapor mixtures. They concluded that at 1595°C chromite was the oxide phase in equilibrium with Fe-Cr alloys containing less than 5.5 pct Cr while at higher chromium concentration Cr,O, was the stable phase. In the composition range 0 to 10 pct Cr they found that the interaction coefficient, was equal to -0.041. Turk-dogan,' Schenck and Steinmetz,, and pargeter4 measured egr) in a similar manner and found the value to be -0.064,-0.04, and -0.052, respectively. McLean and Be11 evaluated egr) from their data on the equilibrium of Fe-Cr-Al-0 alloys with H2/H20 mixtures and found it to be -0.058. However, McLean and Bell's value should only be considered an estimate because the effect of aluminum on the activity coefficient of oxygen is about a hundred times greater than that of chromium. Consequently, an error in the value of egl) used, which at the present time is not well-known, or an error in aluminum analysis, which is present in very small quantities, will result in a significant error in egr). Fischer et a1.6 determined the interaction coefficient (eEr) in Fe-Cr-0 melts not in equilibrium with an oxide phase and containing less than 18 wt pct Cr at 1600°C electrochemically. They determined a value of -0.031 for egr). Hilty et aL7 measured the oxygen content of Fe-Cr melts in equilibrium with an oxide phase containing up to 50 pct Cr. They found that the solubility of oxygen decreased as the chromium content increased to about 6 pct Cr and then increased gradually. They concluded that the equilibrium oxide phase was chromite below 3 pct Cr, distorted spinel from 3 to 9 pct Cr, and Cr,04 above 9 pct Cr. Adachi and lwamotoa also investigated this system, but did not find Cr30,. They X-rayed the equilibrium oxide phases and did not find the presence of Cr,O,. They also X-rayed the oxide phase extracted from a 65 pct Cr melt which was heat treated and did not find metallic chromium as would be expected if Cr3O4 were the equilibrium oxide phase as indicated by the reaction : 3Cr3O4 — 4Cr2O:, + Cr [lj It was the purpose of the present investigation to determine the effect of chromium on the activity coefficient of oxygen in Fe-Cr melts by measuring the activity and solubility of oxygen equilibrated with an oxide phase in the composition range 0.18 to 50.5 wt pct Cr at 1600°C (2912°F). The activity of oxygen in the melts was determined by use of the following galvanic cell: The relationship between the partial pressure of oxygen in equilibrium with the melt and the reversible electromotive force of the cell (E) is where 11 = 4, F is the Faraday constant, pb, is the oxygen pressure in equilibrium with the meit and is the oxygen pressure in equilibrium with Cr203 as determined from the free energy data compiled by Elliott et al? The oxide phase in equilibrium with pure chromium was assumed to be Cr If Cr30, were the equilibrium phase the activities derived would be approximately the same, since the best estimated free energy of formation of Cr,O,, if it does exist, is approximately % the free energy of formation of The activity of chromium in Fe-Cr alloys at 1600° C was also determined from the measured electromotive force. The activity of chromium (aCr) is related to the electromotive force as follows: , The oxide phase in equilibrium with pure chromium and Fe-Cr melts from 10 to 52 pct is assumed to be Cr203 so that n equals three. If future work proves the existence of Crs04 in equilibrium with Fe-Cr melts and pure chromium, the experimental results can be reevaluated using a value of $ for n in Eq. 141. A value of ^ for n will make the activities about 10 pct higher. In order for Eqs. 131 and [4J to be valid the electrolyte, ZrOa(CaO), must exhibit predominantly ionic conduction at the temperature and oxygen partial pressure of its use. Geological Engineering can be all-encompassing and it necessarily overlaps many applications of economic and applied geology. Other review articles will cover specific developments in rock mechanics, open-pit and underground mining, geology, geochemistry, geophysics and geohydrology- all of which overlap many fields of economic and applied geology. Nevertheless, there still remains a diversity of new and innovative applications of geology to engineering works through the activities of federal and state agencies, college and university departments, and industrial or consultant firms-particularly with respect to the properties of earth materials and their behavior "as-is" in nature or under the stress of engineering works. Governmental Agencies: Federal John T. McGill (Chief: Engineering Geology Branch; USGS, Denver) relates that recently the Engineering Geology Branch, together with several other branches of the Office of Environmental Geology, has undertaken the production of interpretive maps of unusual character. These maps are commonly called special-purpose or single concept maps. A folio, or series of maps, is prepared for each topographic quadrangle or area selected for study. The individual maps in a given series are printed on standard-size sheets so that they can be bound together if desired.

The jig may be termed the standard coal-washing machine. Although exact figures on the relative tonnages of coal treated by the various coal-cleaning processes are not available, it is known that a large part of all the coal given special cleaning treatment is handled by jigs. This wide use of the jig warrants a special study of its performance. In this paper are presented the results of an analysis of work done by a three-compartment jig in treating bituminous coal from the Thick Freeport bed in Allegheny County, Pa. Certain systems of washing coal require sizing before washing, while others treat unsized coal. The prevailing practice, however, for the preparation of coking coal from the more easily washed coal is to treat an unsized or natural feed of about — 1 in. size and smaller. Under such conditions, the minimum size of particle that is beneficiated has long been and is still a matter of discussion and conjecture. In a careful laboratory investigation J?ngstl concluded that the practical limit of settling of fine coal is reached at from 0.02 to 0.008 in. On the other hand, Hancock2 has found that single-compartment jigs, used in preparing coal for the domestic market, usually allow most of the heavy (refuse) particles smaller than 1/4 in. to go into the washed coal. He also states that it is impossible with the ordinary coal jig to make any noticeable improvement in the quality of the coal finer than 20 mesh (about 1/30 in.). Because of its importance in coal cleaning, the work described in this paper was undertaken for the purpose of obtaining information on this subject, as a part of the general coal beneficiation program being carried out by the Bureau of Mines.

Blast-furnace flue dust is one of the most troublesome operating factors in the iron and steel industry. It is usually involved in all the unpleasant phases of blast-furnace operations. It adds to our aggravations until we are willing to spend large sums of money to keep it out of our stoves and boilers and more money to handle it again and again on one scheme or another to induce the furnaces to retain it without bad after effects. Several successful operators claim that it is useless to recharge raw flue dust because the furnace would never have blown it out if it had been suitable material for blast-furnace consumption. Most of us who have made persistent efforts to return raw flue dust to the furnaces have decided that it is very often false economy to do so. Yet some remarkable results have been attained at the Ohio Works of the Carnegie Steel Co. through recharging raw dust. The plant comprises six modern blast furnaces. Up to 1909, about 300,000 tons of flue dust had accumulated in stock piles. During the last 10 years, there have been recharged into these furnaces all of the flue dust recovered from the furnace operations, the entire stock pile of Rue dust, and nearly 80,000 tons of dust shipped from other furnaces of the Carnegie Steel Co. The results obtained arc. shown in Table 1.

IN these days of the almost exclusive use of byproduct coke as the blast-furnace fuel in this country, it may seem out of place, and smacking too much of reminiscing, to say anything about the use of anthracite coal for blast-furnace fuel. Viewed in the light of present day research and of developments in alloy steel, some observations seem appropri-ate regarding this raw material that played such an important part in the development of the iron and steel industry during 50 years of the past century. The research work of that period, in which the whole iron and steel industry was revolutionized, passing from wrought iron to steel and from charcoal to three new mineral fuels for blast furnaces, was done chiefly in the full-sized plants of that day; and it was done largely by the ironmasters themselves. The laboratory had not become a part of the ironworks, and scientific instruments were lacking around the blast fur-naces; "rule o' thumb" and erroneous theories prevailed-and have not yet all been eliminated. The recent interest in meteoric iron in connec-tion with nickel steels and other alloys proves that it is worth while to search for the reasons for excellence and the causes for failures in the metallurgy of bygone days. Turner1 gives the reasons why the blast furnace of Dr. F. W. Geissen-hainer on Silver Creek, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles northeast of Pottsville, was operated successfully with anthracite2 in August and September, 1836, and why several other attempts failed. It has taken a long time for us to find out that there are great differences in the behavior of anthracites from the several parts of the anthracite region, as well as differences in coking coals from the bituminous fields.

THE CLOSING years of the nineteenth century witnessed a rapid expansion in Phelps Dodge activities in Arizona and other parts of the Southwest and a corresponding decline in its exporting and importing interests in New York. Before the close of another decade, this process had gone so far that the company was committed lock, stock, and barrel to its western undertakings. By 1910 the evolution that began with the tentative investments at Bisbee and Morenci was complete. An enormous increase in the domestic production of iron and copper, which made it increasingly difficult to find markets for imported cargoes of those metals from English mills, accounted in part for this radical shift in Phelps Dodge activities and interests. In the case of tin plate, the change was even more spectacular. In 1890 a seventh of the world's supply of pig tin passed through the hands of Phelps Dodge agents. In 1906, thanks chiefly to the McKinley Tariff of 1890 which imposed a duty of over two cents a pound on tin plate imported into the United States, the company received its last shipment of tin from England, and thus ended a form of

A list of publications of the United States Bureau of Mines, complete from its establishment to the end of June, 1931, may be had upon request. In addition a monthly leaflet of new publications is issued and is sent to those on the mailing list of the Bureau. Publications are separated into three main divisions: 1. Sales Publications.-Those for which a charge is made. Any orders or remittances in payment for sales publications should be sent directly to the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C., and not to the Bureau of Mines. Introduction In recent years, the industries of the US have been caught between ever increasing environmental concerns and an increasing uncertainty in availability of fuel. An obvious solution is to use our vast reserve of coal by direct combustion or gasification. The problem involves development of a fuel that is environmentally acceptable for these purposes. In order to resolve this problem in the shortest period of time, it would be ideal if an existing technology could be modified to produce a clean fuel from coal. Shortly after World War II, the iron ore industry was compelled to develop a high quality ore from low grade resources. This need led to the development of the taconite industry which involved milling, concentrating, and pelletizing technologies. These technologies are now fully established and applicable to conversion of coal. This presentation introduces a process for converting high sulfur coal into carbonized composite pellets, which emit low quantities of sulfur and particulate matter and may be produced by employing proven elements of technology. The new product, a clean pellet fuel (HelifuelTM) was initially developed by McDowell-Wellman Co., a subsidiary of Helix Technology Inc., at their Dwight-Lloyd Research Laboratories

Introduction The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (PL 95-87) lays a new challenge before the surface mining industry by requiring that prime farmlands must be reclaimed to equivalent or higher levels of yield as nonmined prime farmland in the surrounding area (section 510d). We must now evaluate the situation and plan a mining and reclamation program that will achieve that objective. We must recognize that soil and land needs vary with intended land use and climatic setting. Also, various site conditions determine the potential for constructing a productive soil and the best procedures to accomplish that end. It is necessary to plan the land reconstruction program on a site by site basis in order to achieve the best results. Discussion The Prime Land Concept Terms like prime agricultural land have been used loosely for many years to refer to lands that are highly productive and well suited to agricultural use. Iron-ORE beneficiation methods are determined largely by blastfurnace requirements. There are still many millions of tons of direct furnace ore in the Lake Superior district and blast furnaces are designed and operated for the most efficient use of this material. Beneficiated ore must be so prepared that existing furnaces may use it without alteration in design or radical changes in practice. Many attempts have been made to develop new furnaces or processes for smelting iron-ore concentrate not suitable for blast-furnace use, but these processes have gained little importance. It is, therefore, the endeavor in beneficiating iron ore to make a product that will give at least as good results as direct furnace ore in existing blast furnaces. The term "beneficiation," as applied to iron ore, does not necessarily mean concentration, but more accurately means "dressing up" the ore so that it is more acceptable to the blastfurnace operators. In modern blast-furnace practice the structure of the ore is quite as important as the chemical analysis. Certainly, the higher the iron content and the lower the silica, phosphorus and sulfur, the more desirable the ore bccomcs; but if the structure is bad, that is, if the blast-furnace gases can penetrate the charge only with difficulty, the ore is undesirable regardless of its analysis. This means that the ore should be as uniform in size as possible and free from fines, and also that the individual particles of ore should be pervious to the reducing gases of the furnace. Structure and purity are the primary requirements for a furnace ore and structure is just as important as purity. Iron-ore beneficiation processes can be divided, therefore, roughly into two main classifications: (1) processes that primarily improve the structure, and (2) processes that primarily improve the chemical analysis. During the past 10 years approximately 25 per cent of the ore shipped from the Lake Superior district has been beneficiated. Of this about half has been crushed and screened, a simple operation that primarily improves the structure but in some cases also improves the analysis slightly. I don't know why it is, but every one seems to have it in for us poor tool-steel men. About 15 years ago, a good-sized plant was built in Syracuse for the manufacture of cast tools of malleable iron. The promoter of the scheme claimed to have a secret, process that had been given to him by a tramp to whom he gave a lift along a dusty road. The widows and orphans invested liberally in the securities of the company without consulting the men established in the machine-tool business in Syracuse. About two years later, when the sheriff's sale occurred, the secret, which was carried on the books of the company as an asset valued at $2,000,000, brought $15 at auction. A little later another concern started on the theory of replacing scrap high-speed steel with new high-speed steel tools made therefrom. During 1972-1973, U.S. Steel acquired an existing southern West Virginia high volatile coal mine property including a 150 tph heavy media feldspar jig preparation plant. Expansion of production from the property required an increase in plant capacity to 300 tph, replacement of the feldspar jig with a hydrocyclone circuit, and inclusion of a water clarification thickener system. The rugged and restrictive nature of the terrain adjacent to the plant facility indicated prohibitive construction costs and severe site congestion would be encountered if a conventional water clarification thickener were installed. A high-loading, small-volume thickener, developed initially for the sugar beet industry by the Enviro-Clear Co. of New York, was investigated by U.S. Steel Research for possible coal preparation application, utilizing bench scale and small scale pilot plant evaluation methods. Results of testing at existing U.S. Steel preparation plants indicated predictable successful application of the Enviro-Clear thickener, so a 35-ft-diam unit was installed. The two-phase thickener system, utilizing presettled bottom sludge as a filter-clarification media, has successfully performed since commissioning in April 1973, producing clarified water competitive with conventional thickener systems with freedom from usual thickener operational problems.
