Effective thermal conductivities were measured for seven samples of porous rocks through which gases or aqueous salt solution were flowing, parallel and countercurrent to the flow of heat. The results are analyzed in terms of the contributions of the solid and fluid phases to the total energy transfer. The solid contribution for the sandstone samples studied was found to be a Junction of the porosity and an effective thermal conductivity for the solid phase. The fluid contribution was a function of the Peclet number. Based upon the equations presented, the effective conductivity of the system can be estimated from the properties of the fluid, the flow conditions, and the porosity and pore-size distribution of the rock. INTRODUCTION Heat-transfer characteristics of porous media containing fluids are needed for the design and evaluation of thermal methods of petroleum production. The study reported here considers the problem of countercurrent flow of fluid and heat in sandstone rocks, and is a continuation of previous studies concerned with parallel and radial flow of energy and fluid in both rocks517 and beds of fine particles.6,10 In addition to these earlier works, Asaad,1 Kimura,4 Preston,8 Zierfuss and vlietll and waddams9 have reported effective conductivities for systems filled with stagnant fluids. There appears to be no published data on rocks through which fluids are flowing. The purpose of this study was to present such information and, particularly, to investigate the effects of properties of the rock and the flow rate on the results. The rock samples were naturally occurring sandstones from different locations and were similar to petroleum-bearing formations. The properties of the seven samples showing the range in porosities and permeabilities are given in Table 1. The mean pore sizes were calculated from mercury penetration data by averaging the radius with respect to pore volume. The details of this method and comparison with other procedures for estimating 7 are given elsewhere. Four fluids, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, helium and 10 weight per cent sodium-chloride solution were used with each sample. For Bartlesville sandstone, BA-5, runs were made at mean pressures from 15 to 250 psig using nitrogen. The other measurements were carried out at a mean pressure of 100 psig. The maximum temperature range eacountered was 70° to 300°F. The flow rate of fluid ranged from about 1.0 to 130 Ib/(hr)(sq ft), and this corresponded to a modified Reynolds-number range of 5 x 10-4 to 1.0. The variation in Prandtl number was 0.70 to 4.1. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The equipment consisted of apparatus to supply a constant flow of gas, or salt solution, at constant pressure to the bottom of a vertical test section, and metering and flow-regulation apparatus after the test section. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the effect of cold-working and annealing treatments upon the occurrence of preferred orientation in annealed brass wire. The subject has received less consideration than has the same phenomenon in annealed brass sheet or strip, and perhaps very properly so in view of the obvious and undesired results obtained in the forming or drawing of strip having preferred orientation, which results are in contrast with the lack of any spectacular visual evidence in wire. The factors of cold-working and annealing that control preferredness in strip are naturally expected to function similarly in wire. Indeed, one might expect the condition to be commoner in annealed wire, because the severity of the cold-working between anneals in commercial Practice is usually much greater for wire than for strip. For example, a wire that is to be finished in the annealed condition on a diameter of 0.040 in. is commonly subjected to a final reduction of 90 per cent between the last two anneals, the large reduction being accomplished in the successive drafts of a multiple-die machine. Wire for rivets, for instance, on 0.125-in. diameter, although given a slight reduction of about Io per cent after the final anneal, may have been given a prior reduction of 75 to 80 per cent. Barrettl states the fiber axis of annealed 70-30 brass wire to be [111], with some indication of [IOO] as a secondary fiber axis. Croft and Sachs2 have reported briefly on some differences in brass wire with random and with preferred orientations. They showed statistical plots of the twin-band angles with respect to the wire axis or direction of drawing as observed on an axial plane. They also pointed out that the resistance of the wire to corrosion-cracking when externally stressed and exposed to a mercurous nitrate solution decreased as the degree of the preferred orientation increased. Material and PRocedure All the wire for the investigation was processed from one portion as cut for extrusion from a cast billet of the following analysis: 70.13 per cent copper; 0.01 lead; 0.01 iron; 0.02, nickel; 29.83 zinc (by difference). The billet section, 8 in, in diameter, was extruded hot to 3/4-in. diameter, after which it was processed by alternate cold-drawing and annealing treatments as indicated in Fig. I. The earliest anneals in process were at about 1100°F. and the next to the last reductions by drawing were 58 per cent. The diameter of the finally annealed wire was 0.132 in. Semifinal anneals were at 800°F., 950°F. and 1100°F. and reductions of 47.5, 74, 83.5 and 89.5 per cent were employed in drawing to 0.132 in. The benefits derived from an acidizing treatment are a function of the penetration achieved by the acid before complete spending. Additional penetration may be achieved by (1) controlling acid leak-08 into formation pores in the channel faces, and (2) retarding the reaction rate of the acid. A recently developed chemical additive consists of a synthetic polymeric material which absorbs hydrochloric-acid solutions, when suspended therein, swelling up to 40 times its original volume. These swollen particles have the ability to deform and seal-08 formation pores, providing fluid-loss control. In addition, they provide a diffusion barrier between the fracture face and the acid solution, prolonging the spending time of the acid. Field applications of this new technique have shown promising results. A method of conducting acid fluid-loss tests, using carbonate cores, is believed to provide fluid-loss data that are more representative of formation conditions than the conventional filter-paper determinations. INTRODUCTION The concept of oilwell acidizing has changed since its first commercial application, 30 years ago. Originally, it was visualized that the acid penetrated thousands of tiny pores and flow channels in the matrix rock, enlarging them by dissolving the carbonate walls. The resultant permeability increase was assumed to be the responsible factor in increasing production from the well. Recent laboratory studies,' however, have shown that this does not provide the complete picture. Although this type of individual pore penetration by the acid does take place during acid "soaks", designed to overcome "skin effect" due to mud invasion in the immediate vicinity of the wellbore, many years of experience have shown that considerable pressure is required to attain any appreciable injection rate into the fine capillary pores of the rock. During most acidizing treatments, the bottom-hole pressure build-up due to the restriction of flow into the formation exceeds the "breakdown" pressure of the rock so that a fracture is induced. In most cases, such fractures open up along natural, incipient fissures and zones of weakness in the rock and, therefore, tend to follow the natural stress pattern of the rock—whether it be horizontal, vertical or inclined. Because of the comparatively greater permeability of the channel in relation to that of the matrix, the bulk of the acid volume is diverted into the newly opened fracture. Here it quickly penetrates the formation, opening and ex- tending the fracture in much the same manner as a conventional fracturing fluid. Unlike the fracturing fluid, however, most acidizing solutions contain no propping agent; thus, the open fracture will again close when the injection pressure is relieved. Laboratory studies2 have shown that in many cases the etching of the fracture faces, resulting from the reaction between the acidizing solution and the carbonate rock, is nonuniform due to the heterogeneity of the rock structure. As a result, the two fracture faces no longer match when pressure is released, and support pillars and intermediate voids remain, forming a high-conductivity channel for well fluids. Unfortunately, this is not true over the entire area of the fracture, but only over that portion of the fracture where the rock has been partially dissolved by the acid. The acid solution spends as its travels away from the wellbore; once it has completely spent, even though it may provide additional mechanical fracture extension, no additional benefit due to etching of fracture faces can be expected. Studies of acid reaction rates under formation conditions,3 observing the effect of different variables upon spending time, have shown that the reaction was often so rapid that very little penetration of the formation occurred before the acid was spent. Study was undertaken to devise methods of increasing the penetration of the acid before spending, so as to provide greater benefit from the acidizing treatment by etching a greater portion of the fracture faces. Several techniques were devised to accomplish this purpose. First, chemical additives were developed which were designed to retard the reaction rate of the acid, causing it to penetrate a greater distance from the wellbore before finally becoming spent. Another method was to increase the injection rate of the acid. However, it was found that the resultant increased shear tended to accelerate the reaction rate of the acid, partially offsetting the benefits of the higher injection rate insofar as achieving increased penetration before spending was concerned.' Another approach to the problem of achieving increased penetration was the development of fluid-loss additives for acid solutions, which would minimize the volume of acid lost into formation pores in the fracture faces and provide maximum fracture extension for the volume of acid injected during the treatment. The use of fluid-loss additives is now considered the most effective method of providing maximum fracturing-fluid efficiency.~ Unfortunately, this latter technique does not solve the problem of rapid reaction rate, with consequent limitation of the fracture area benefited by reaction with unspent acid. It is gratifying to observe the growing interest in the study of oil-well spacing. It should always be held in mind that the problem of optimum spacing is to obtain the maximum return of capital per acre drained. This naturally evolves.into a mathematical consideration. As mathematics is the basis of all science, an effort should be made to develop formulas which involve data obtainable in the early stages of development. The first information from a discovery well in a new field would be the character of the sand, rate of initial production of oil and gas, viscosity of the oil, rock pressure, etc. Later, from this well, if Herold's theories of hydraulic, volumetric and capillary controls are accepted, could he determined the ultimate production as without interference from drainage by subsequent well completions, and under which control the well is producing. If it should prove to be producing under capillary control, a rough estimate could be made of it's radius of drainage. With but one well, the radius of drainage, or the interference of drainage of individual wells by close spacing, would be estimated by comparison with similar conditions in other fields in which the development has progressed sufficiently to furnish the data. A second well that is spaced sufficiently close so that an interference can he observed after its ultimate production is estimated, will furnish data to develop a desirable spacing of wells which can be inaugurated for that area and which is capable of producing a uniform amount of oil under like conditions. In some fields this area will be extensive, in others each well location will require an individual study. In 1924, Cutlerl developed a scheme whereby he determined by tabulation a spacing of oil wells for the maximum return per acre. After a study of production in a number of fields, he developed the following as a tentative rule: "The ultimate production for wells of equal size in the same pool where there is interference (shown by a difference in the, production decline curves for different spacing) seems approximately to vary directly as the square roots of the areas drained by the wells. This paper gives a summary of tests made on the accelerated electrolytic corrosion of the tin brass, 70:29:1 copper-zinc-tin (admiralty metal), of different grain sixes in various electrolytes. There has been great difference of opinion as to the effect of grain size on the corrosion rate of brass, particularly in condenser-tube practice, but so far as is known no information has been published on the subject. It has been assumed, on the basis of the amorphous-cement theory, that fine-grained brass would corrode more rapidly than coarse-grained because the amorphous phase is more soluble than the crystalline and there is more cement per unit area exposed in the fine-grained material. In previous work on the corrosion of metals and alloys in acid mine waters from coal mines,1,2 it was found that the grain size, within a restricted range, had practically no effect on the corrosion of the brass 70:29:1 copper-zinc-tin: In the tests made, samples of three grain sizes were included; viz., 0.025, 0.035, and 0.075 mm. diameter (1600, 817, and 177 gr. per sq. mm., respectively), and the average losses on exposure to the most acid of three waters were 7.07, 6.80, and 6.72 mg. per sq. cm. per day (24 hr.), respectively. No distinguishing features were observed on microscopic examination of the corroded samples. In two other mine waters, the corrosion losses were substantially the same for the respective samples. These tests were -incidental to other tests and were not sufficiently comprehensive to warrant drawing definite conclusions. Generally in Table 1 the unit for presentation of data is a field. For our purposes a field is defined as the whole of a surface area wherein productive locations are continuous. Such unit commonly includes and surrounds nonproductive areas. Such unit commonly includes a great variety of geologic conditions-—several units of continuous productive reservoirs of distinctly different structure and of distinctly different stratigraphy. Therefore it is hoped that our authors will subdivide "field" so as to enable students to make analyses that may have scientific and /or commercial value. As to each space in the tabulation, it is either (I) not applicable, (2) the proper entry is not determinable, (3) the proper entry is determinable, but not determinable from data available to the author, (4) the proper entry is determinable by the author. In spaces not applicable, the author will please draw horizontal lines; in spaces where the proper entries are not determinable, the author will please insert x; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not determinable from data available to the author, the author will please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author he will, of course, make such entries. Generally, y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces, the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entries need not be hedged to such extent as in cases where the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use 2. For example, if the total production of a field is known to be between 1,800,000 and 1,850,000, the author may report 1,8xx,xxx; or if the production is between 1,850,000 and 1,900,000, the author may report 1,9xx,xxx. Where a numeral is immediately to the left of x or y, such numeral represents the nearest known number in that position. As to quantity of gas produced from many fields the question will arise as to whether the figures should include merely the gas marketed or should include also estimates of gas used in operations and gas wasted. Although rough approximations may be involved, our figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Wile we have not provided a column for showing the thickness of the productive zone, generally the difference between average depth to bottoms of productive wells

In reporting results of precipitation hardening experiments, it is customary to include such conditions as solution heat-treatment temperature, specimen size, and quench medium as well as the aging time and temperature. One portion of thermal history that is often overlooked is the effect of the heating rate employed to achieve the aging temperature. It is the intent of this note to demonstrate the importance of the rate of heating to aging temperatures. This work was carried out on the aluminum alloy 7075 aged at 162oC, a temperature commonly used to obtain stress corrosion resistant tempers. A 2 in. thick plate of 7075 was quenched into 24°C water after solution heat-treatment for 2 hr at 470°C. Approximately 13 in. around the periphery of the plate was discarded to minimize quench rate variations, and the remainder was divided into 0.5 by 1.8 by 2.0 in. blocks which were held at room temperature, 24oC, for 4 days. This aging, or incubation period, at room temperature allowed a copious supply of GP-zones to form. Blocks were then heated at various rates to 162oC using the practices shown in Table I. Both single- and two-step aging practices were employed for each heating rate. The single step consisted of heating directly to temperature at the indicated rate while the two-stage practice included an interruption of heating for 7 hr at 107°C. In the case of the two-stage 100°C per min heating rate experiment, the specimens were returned to room temperature after 7 hr at 107°C where they were held for 16 hr be-fore finally heating at this rate to 162°C. This devia-tion in practice is not considered to be significant. Blocks were removed after various times at 162oC, and aging curves were determined from duplicate R. F. ASHTON and D. S. In the management of oil properties, it is always desirable to know the future behavior of oil wells and oil reservoirs. Some estimation of the quantity of oil and gas that will be produced must be made as a basis for decisions on possible returns on investments in lifting equipment, drilling of additional wells, and other operating expenditures. In new or wildcat areas, operating expenditures are considered highly speculative, but in the completion of partly drilled and the operation of producing fields it is good business to remove as much speculation as possible. An accurate knowledge of oil and gas reserves in such cases would solve many management problems. The term "oil reserves" usually signifies the future ultimate recovery without specifying the method of production. Thus with changing methods and innovations in the production industry, reserves of any definite reservoir may be increased by increasing the portion of oil recovered. The usual reserve estimates are made by comparisons of well and formation characteristics, by using a percentage recovery on the oil content of the formation volume using porosity data, by extending production curves on non-prorated wells, or by extending bottom-hole pressure-production curves. The most reliable method would appear to be one that would estimate the initial quantity of oil and gas present and then obtain percentage recovery values for various productive methods and formations from experience. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a method of estimating the initial quantity of oil and gas present in a reservoir. The method is based on field operating data and the properties of crude oil-gas mixtures. The principles involved, the data required, the assumptions necessary, and an example of the method will be given. The method is entirely independent of sand volumes and formation porosities. INTRODUCTION A BRIEF elemental discussion of the fundamental factors involved in diamond drilling often fills a need, particularly when a mine operator is contemplating for the first time an exploratory drilling campaign. Mr. James A. Barr, of the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute, has suggested that many engineers must undertake a drilling program of one kind or another and, in the case of diamond drilling, sometimes even are at a loss as to how to start correspondence. The Bureau of Mines has acquired much experience in managing exploratory diamond-drilling activities. Its activities in diamond drilling included exploring for potash in Texas, Utah and New Mexico 1-4 during the 1920's. The Strategic Minerals Exploration program was started in 1939 and was materially expanded during the war to include critical and essential minerals. At the peak of its war-time activity more than 200 engineers were employed, a majority of whom supervised diamond drilling. Many of them had little experience with such work prior to their employment with the Bureau, and it was necessary to instruct them in their duties. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to present the fundamentals of exploratory diamond drilling from the viewpoint of management in such a way that they will serve as a basis on which those beginning exploratory diamond drilling may build an experience and acquire ability to direct exploration as they gain that experience. SELECTION OF METHOD OF DRILLING Selection of the method of drilling is governed by the type of material to be penetrated and by the type of sample needed to determine the quality and importance of a deposit. Types of drills that might be used for a given job include diamond drills, churn drills, hand auger drills, power auger drills, bucket drills, and rotary drills (sometimes called "seismograph rigs"). Each type has a specific field in which it is most useful. While the Bureau of Mines utilized all the types of drilling mentioned, diamond drilling was used on a majority of its exploratory projects. FACTORS GOVERNING SELECTION OF DIAMOND DRILLING The prime consideration in selecting a method of drilling is first to determine what results are desired and then to choose a method that will furnish reliable data in the ground to be penetrated. Use of diamond drills permits recovery of a core as well as sludge at a comparatively low cost. The core provides an excellent means of studying the formation being drilled and furnishes much information that would be difficult to obtain otherwise. Diamond drills will recover a satis-

Nearly every mining and metallurgical engineer will recall his early experience and method of producing step- or stage-reduction in preparing ore-samples for assay, in which he employecl idea, step- or stage-reduction simply because it was a self-evident fact that it would be easier to break coarse ore with a hammer than it would be to roll it back and forth under the muller, and alter having reduced it to a size easy for a rubbing or bucking division he then placed it under the muller on the bucking-board and further reduced it in proportion to the physical energy he wished to expend, which was generally the minimum to produce results. After this step in our experience me seem to have ceased to consider stage-reduction as mechanicallg essential, probably because it did not apply to individual exertion. Moreover, me did not retain the mass under the muller until it was all reduced to pass the 80-mesh assay-oftice screen, but practiced further step-reduction by screening out the fine in order that it should not interfere with subsequent work, replacing the coarse for further reduction on the bucking-board. It was many years after the bucking-board stage of metallurgical practice that we mere brought to a full realization that there was a more economical method in applying the crushing forces usually employed in metallurgical work by taking advantage of this individual experience and applying it to mechanical ends. We have made some advance to this end in bringing out the conical ball-and-pebble mill—a device which fairly well automatically adjusts power to the results obtained, mechanically repeating the bucking-board experience. In the action of the conical mill, theory is evolved from practice, rather than practice from theory, as is commonly the case.

These mines were discovered by George W. Lufkin in August, 1878, and mere worked almost continuously until August, 1893, a period of fifteen years. The ore-deposits in this locality lie close to the surface, and it is strange that the Spaniards, passing and repassing for nearly three centuries, did not discover them, particularly as they are marked in several places by large outcrops of black flint and iron, which would lead even a casual observer in a mineral country to suspect the proximity of ore. The mines are situated about six miles from the old Santa Fé trail, and fifteen miles from the Rio Grande. The geology is such that a skilled geologist passing over the ground would probably suspect, from the peculiar arrangement of the formations, the occurrence of ore. The formations in the district, eruptive and sedimentary, are nine in number; and of these eight are to be found within one thousand feet of the Grande workings. Topography. The following notes are descriptive of a country as yet in its infancy as regards the advancement made in mining operations. Its inaccessibility and other militating circumstances have retarded progress in that direction. With the completion of the railroad, now under construction, having the city of Cali as its objective point, with the concomitant civilizing and developing consequences, it is certain that the slopes of the Cordilleras will prove to be a South American Eldorado. Deposits of coal, copper, and minerals other than those of the precious metals are known to exist in quantities which, under more favorable conditions of accessibility, etc., could be profitably mined. The Government of the United States of Colombia, I think, is disposed to encourage and foster mining enterprises. Articles designed for mining are admitted free of duty; the permanency of the government is, at least, as well assured as that of Mexico (which is not noted for its immutability), and a more sincerely friendly sentitment towards Americans prevails in the United States of Colombia than in Mexico. This paper is confined to a description of the property of the Cauca company's mines, and is intended rather as a preliminary notice than as an exhaustive report. The Cauca mining district is reached by the following route: New York to Aspinwall; to Panama; to Buenaventura, a port on the west coast of the United States of Colombia, distant thirty-six hours from Panama by steamer; to Cali in the State of Cauca. The State of Cauca is bounded on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, on the northwest by the State of Panama, on the northeast by the States of Bolivar and Antioquia, on the east by Brazil and Venzuela, on the south by the Republic of Ecuador, and on the west by the Pacific. Ocean. It has a territory of 41,443 square miles, which is about one-tenth of the entire territory of the United States of Colombia. Its population, including the 50,000 savage Indians of the Caqueta (some of whom are cannibals), is nearly 450,000 souls, or about one-sixth of the population of the Colombian republic. The recovery of dissolved gold from slime pulp in the cyanide process was first accomplished by intermittent decantation. This simple process consists in mixing with the pulp containing the values in solution, a solution of lower gold content, settling the mixture in a tank and decanting the clear supernatant fluid. The thick pulp remaining in the tank is pumped to a second tank together with more barren-solution and again settled and decanted. After several repetitions of this operation, values are so far reduced that further washing is not profitable. The gold recovery of this process is high, but the plant required is bulky, labor cost is high and the amount of solution to be precipitated is excessive. Historical Data As early as 1901, a plant was built in the Black Hills of South Dakota by John Randall, employing the same principles but attempting to make the process continuous by substituting for flat-bottomed tanks, cones which operated continuously, receiving a constant feed and discharging a steady stream of thickened pulp. These cones were operated in series, the thick underflow of the first one forming, with a stream of diluting solution, the feed to the second cone of the series. Barren solution was added to the tank immediately preceding the discharge tank and, after being slightly enriched by the low-grade pulp in this tank, overflowed to form a diluting solution again for the richer feed entering the third tank from the end of the series, and so on back to the richest tank of the series. Clear water was used for the wash in the final tank. This is the principle on which all successful countercurrent decantation plants operate at the present time, but Randall's plant was not successful because of mechanical difficulties in getting a continuous thick discharge from his cone tanks. A similar plant was built in South Africa although there the washes were not repeatedly used, as in Randall's case, but were precipitated after each contact with the ore. This also was abandoned

The absolute porosity of a rock or sand may be defined as the volume of the interparticle space expressed as a percentage of the total rock volume. The effective porosity as contrasted with the absolute porosity is the volume of the interparticle spaces which intercommunicate with passages of sufficient size to permit the entrance or recovery of gas or oil, also expressed as a percentage of the total rock volume. A knowledge of effective porosity is of prime importance in estimating the ultimate recovery to be expected from oil and gas-bearing formations. The determination of the effective porosity of a rock includes the measurement of two values: (I) the volume of the rock as a whole, and (2) the volume of the grains and sealed pore space. This paper deals with a new apparatus which has been called a "hydrogen porosimeter" for determining the volume of the grains and the sealed pore space. This volume is determined by means of the pressure relations established in the instrument by the introduction of a known quantity of hydrogen. The Hydrogen Porosimeter The apparatus used in this work consists of an upper chamber for measuring the gas, a lower chamber for holding the sample to be tested, a gage for measuring the pressures, a tank of hydrogen, and the necessary connections. (Figs. 1 and 2.) Of the several gases that might be used for this work, hydrogen has been chosen for three reasons: (1) it deviates less from the gas laws than most gases; (2) it readily penetrates the sample; (3) it is absorbed less than most gases by the solids and liquids with which it may come in contact. Method of Operation After placing the sample to be tested in the lower chamber, the apparatus is thoroughly flushed with hydrogen to remove all air from the system, which is then brought to atmospheric pressure Po. The valve connecting the two chambers is next closed and the pressure in the upper chamber is brought up to a pressure PI by admitting gas from the tank.

In ten years the manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna District have become impor-tant in the iron industry. By Dec. 31, 1923, 4,735,806 tons had been produced. Dur-ing the war, the low-phosphorus black ores were in demand; now the high-phosphorus low,-silica brown ores are favored. It is estimated that the reserves of these ores are ample for some time. A RISE in less than ten years from obscurity into great prominence economically, tersely summarizes the history and status of the Cuyuna manganiferous iron ores. The Cuyuna district produces and ships mostly high-phosphorus iron ore, but the annual production of manganiferous iron ore is increasing rapidly and productions from individual mines are becoming more regular and more dependable as to grades and tonnages. This ore bids fair to become, shortly, the principal product of the district and is responsible for the present economic prominence of this district. The iron ores of the district have been described, by the author and others, in many publications and will not be discussed here. Lately the manganiferous iron ores have been given some attention, but the range and variations of chemical composition of the ores, the principal physical characteristics of the ores and their deposits, the relative importance of the different ores and their possibilities in future developments, and the life of the respective reserves have not been discussed. It is impossible to give all of this information with the positiveness necessary for it to constitute a reliable guide for investment or even for future mine development. Each property and each party presents a special case and deserves critical consideration. We are dealing with special ores and always with a set of new conditions. Sufficient information of a general nature can be given, however, to indicate the reason for and the trend of the presently augmented developments in the district.

Smallwood mine is part of the Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Lake operation and is situated in Labrador, 240 miles north of Sept-Iles, Quebec. Last year, 15 million tons of crude ore were crushed to yield 6.3 million tons of concentrate and pellets. This year the figures will be 17 million of crude and 7 ¼ million tons of concentrate and pellets, which is the full plant capacity. Carol Lake ores consist primarily of specularite and magnetite mixed with quartz. Since both rotary and jet piercing drills are used, it is often desirable in planning to know in which regions of the orebody, or new orebodies, a particular drill will be most economic. This makes it necessary to establish a correlation between drillability and pierceability and some physical rock property. For the rotary drills a good correlation was found with penetration rate and grinding factor index. The jet piercers were found to have a reciprocal relationship in the sense that the best rotary ground was the worst jet ground and vice versa. It is also indicated how an economic comparison could be made using these penetration rate versus grinding factor index curves, the hole size distribution curves for single pass and chambered holes, and the mine distribution curve for grinding factor index.

A NEW method of treating steel by ammonia has recently been intro¬duced into the metallurgical industry, by means of which piston cylinders of internal combustion engines, shafts and other similar steel products can be made more resistant to wear than formerly. In 1929 the writer' published the historical notes and some experiments upon nitrification. He believes that the corrosion of nitrified steel is a matter of importance and worth studying; and as there have been few studies thereof, he has conducted experiments in this respect. L. Guillet,2 in 1927, reported corrosion tests made on nitrified and cemented steels with acid and salt solutions. In 1928, 0. Hengstenberg3 reported the high resistance of nitrified steel to water vapor and air. V. 0. Homerberg4 stated that nitrified steel has high resistance to water, air and salt solution; and G. Hagg5 studied nitrified layers of iron by means of the X-ray. Though F. Hanaman6 in 1913, measured the single potential difference of steel treated with ammonia at above 650° C., no one, it seems, has ever measured the single potential difference of the so-called nitrified steels having extraordinary hardness. The writer measured the single potential differences of nitrified special steels in various solutions with the object of studying the corrosion problem and, if possible, of knowing whether any new physical property would be caused by nitrification.

MUCH descriptive matter has appeared on the subject of suspension roof supports, or roof bolting, as it is more commonly called. The widespread introduction of roof bolting into coal mines and metal mines is truly phenomenal. Mine operators were quick to recognize the advantages of supporting wide openings without hindrance to machine maneuverability and ventilation. Although suspension roof support has long been installed at St. Joseph Lead Co. mines in southeast Missouri,'" its application to coal mining presented new problems, such as proper anchorage and bearing for the bolts, bolt diameter, and spacing of bolts. After continuous testing and experimenting at the mines, standard roof-bolting materials were determined.'!' The study reported in this paper is not concerned with such details as bolt diameter, which may be considered already solved in practice. In the tests discussed here, small models patterned on actual bolts were found to function in the same way and as satisfactorily as their prototypes. The aim of these tests was rather to investigate the influence of roof-bolting systems on the stress distribution around mine openings and to study the fracture patterns obtained in actual testing. Little was found about this in the literature, as testing of suspension roof methods and quantitative measurements are only now coming to the fore. Several suggestions and actual measurements have been made to evaluate critically the functioning of roof bolting systems, single roof bolts, and parts thereof. Outstanding among them is Bucky's outline of structural model tests.'" Since none of the suggested testing equipment was available, however, for the experiments discussed below, a different approach was chosen. The response of a mine roof under stress has often been compared to that of a beam. The slow coming down and bending through of beam or plate-like banks of shale, sandstone, or top coal is a familiar occurrence, extensively cited in the literature." It was felt that testing of roof-bolt systems installed in a concrete beam which was loaded in bending would be a fair approximation of the behavior of a mine roof underground. Another school of thought considers the roof behavior over an underground opening in connection with the stress distribution all around a circular or rectangular opening. This is more accurate, and leads to the concept of a dome-shaped zone of material destroyed under tensile stress. This is likewise a common sight in unsupported roadways where the continuous fall of roof results in what has been called the natural outline of roof fracture. This theory could not be tested and is treated separately in Appendix B. It is important to note that according to both assumptions the immediate roof fails in tension; the use of a beam in these tests, therefore, should give information valid for either of the two theories. With the testing equipment at hand it was possible to load concrete beams 6xlx0.5 ft under two-point loading, giving an equal bending moment over the center part in which the model bolts were installed. A comparison was made of the ultimate loads needed to break plain beams and beams in which roof bolts were installed. Arrangements were made with: 1—plain beams; 2—bolts with plate washers, some with holes drilled at 90" angles and others with holes drilled at 45" angles; 3—bolts with channel irons underneath; 4—bolts in holes filled afterward with cement; and 5—bolts anchored in a stronger stratum. The foregoing arrangement is made in order of increasing strength, as assumed from the theory of reinforced concrete. Likewise, laminated beams with wooden model bolts and with combinations of the foregoing set-ups were tested. All in all, 21 experiments were made out of the much greater number of combinations possible. There were, too, some trial tests. Enough observations from this limited number were made to interpret the behavior of mine roof, supported by various types of suspension bolts, at fracture. In present-day concepts, which have been proved by mathematical derivations and stress analyses, any opening driven underground will change the distribution and magnitude of the stresses existing around it. It does not matter whether the stresses become visible, as in rocks whose strength is less than the forces acting upon them, or whether they are invisible, as in the gangways lacking evidence of rock pressure. In this latter case the rocks can withstand changes in stress-distribution. To consider the mine roof as a beam, there are, with transversal loading, tensile stresses in the lower fiber and compressive stresses in the upper layers above the neutral axis of the beam.
