It is well known that high residual stresses are created in tubing by the sinking process, in which no internal tool or mandrel is used.l-4 In this process, the wall thickness is usually slightly increased.4,5 In tube drawing with a plug, the residual stresses are gradually reduced with increasing reduction of wall, and, by the conventional approximation methods of stress measurement, no stress is detected in tubing in which the wall reduction is over 50 per cent of the total reduction in cross-sectional area.l,6 It has also been observed that higher stresses are set up by the use of wide-angle dies than by acute dies.? 'he actual stress distribution in drawn tubing has been investigated by a few workers,7"9 but has not been related to the conditions of the drawing process. Some attempts have been made to correlate accelerated cracking tests for stresses in brass products with the magnitude of the circumferential stresses and the condition of the metal. l-10 Materials and Preparation The material used in this experiment was commercial cartridge-brass (70 per cent Cu, 30 per cent Zn) tubing in the straightened and annealed condition.† This tubing was of various outside diameters and had a wall thickness of 0.032 in. It was sunk to 1/2-in. outside diameter by means of an experimental 10,000-lb. hydraulic draw-bench, with a maximum drawing speed of 8 ft. per minute. All dies were of 1/2-in. diameter. Various die materials and contours were used in order to study the effect of die design on residual stresses in the tubing; the specifications for the dies are given in Fig. I. Castor oil was used throughout as lubricant. Chattering occurred in sinking some of the tubing, particularly when dies having the more acute angles were used, but the tubes showing chatter marks did not differ markedly from those with a smooth surface regarding the magnitude of residual stress. The source of the chattering has not yet been revealed. The wall of the tubing becomes thicker during s nking, as previously observed.4,5 The increases in wall thickness were 3, 7 and 9.5 per cent on the average for 6, 20 and 33 per cent reductions in diameter, no effect of the contour being noticeable. The application of electrolytic polishing of metals introduced a new technique for preparing surfaces, especially for single crystals. This procedure generallv has been assumed to eliminate the strain introduced by mechanical polishing and to result in a more truly representative surface, particularly in the case of soft metallic materials. However, apparently little information is available concerning specific characteristics of a surface prepared electrolytically. The conventional method of mechanical polishing is known to produce a layer of distorted metal which is usually removed by a suitable chemical etchant. To what depth the strain introduced by mechanical polishing penetrates into the lattice is still obscure. The present investigation illustrates the apparently anomalous appearances of glide ellipses on electrolytically polished surfaces of aluminum single crystals. Experimental Procedure and Results Aluminum single crystals, 99.975 pct pure, remaining from the investigation of Found,' were polished electrolytically using a solution of fluoboric acid and a low current density. Laue back-reflection technique, interpreted after the manner of Greninger,2 was used to determine the orientation and the specimen axis rotation of the crystals. Three flat surfaces about 4 mm wide parallel to the specimen axis, one perpendicular to the theoretical slip direction and the other two 120° apart, were polished mechanically and repolished electrolytically. A tensile load was applied using a Southwark-Emery tensile machine at a rate of about 40 lb per min. Elongation was measured by noting the initial and final gauge lengths. X ray diffraction was used to obtain the usual x and X values in order to calculate the elongation and shear by plotting stereographically the specimen axis rotation by means of the Schmid-Boas formula.³ In Table I may be found the value of the gauge diameter, measured elongation, calculated elongation and shear for the crystals investigated. Fig I shows the initial and final positions of the specimen axes of the crystals. At a low magnification the slip lines developed on specimen Al-I appeared straight and rather evenly spaced. However, at a high magnification, the slip lines were seen to be composed of small markings which were present throughout the length of the specimen (Fig 2). ARTHUR SMITH DWIGHT, president of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, was born in Taunton, Mass., on March 18, 1864. He is descended on both sides from early settlers, one of whom was Richard Warren, of the "Mayflower." His forebears included Col. Benjamin Church, Tim-othy Dwight, and the Rev. Jonathan Edwards, third president of Princeton College. Mr. Dwight was graduated in 1882 from the Poly-technic Institute of Brooklyn, N. Y., and three years later from the Columbia School of Mines, with the degree of Engineer of Mines. In 1914, he received the honorary degree of Master of Science from Columbia. On leaving Columbia in 1885, he went to Pueblo, Col., and for thirteen years was associated with the Colorado Smelting Co. Beginning as assayer he rose to be general superintendent. When he gave up the latter position he became connected with several large companies in the mining and smelting of lead, copper and the precious metals in the Rocky Mountain region. This work occupied him from 1897 to 1906, and six years of that time were spent in Mexico. He was general manager of the Greene Consolidated Copper Company at Cananea, Mexico, in 1906, when trouble first developed against the régime of Diaz. A general uprising was planned to seize the mines, and with money and supplies so obtained, carry the revolt through the interior. Mr. Dwight turned his industrial organiza-tion into a military unit almost over night, stemmed the tide of revolution, and had the situation well in hand before the arrival of troops. In the fall of 1906 he returned to New York and began practice as a consulting mining and metallurgical engineer. He next developed important metallurgical patents for the roasting and agglomeration of fine ores, known as the Dwight and Lloyd sintering process, now extensively used ail over the world.

THE increase in the production of iron has been accompanied by a growing demand for an improved quality, and more especially at the present time, in the manufacture of Bessemer steel, which is rapidly becoming an important branch of industry. This has led the makers of pig iron to a careful investigation of the composition of the materials from which their metal is produced, the inquiry being greatly assisted by a cordial alliance of science and practice. Formerly, chemical science was held in abeyance, or admitted in a hesitating experimental way ; but now it is received as a valuable auxiliary, and its decisions are accepted as final and conclusive. It is called on to assist the iron-maker in determining the quality of his stock, and to detect the presence of injurious elements in his fuel, ores, flux, or iron. The object of this paper is to submit the method now in use at the furnaces of the Kemble Coal and Iron Company in the Broad Top coal and iron region, for removing, by a process of crushing and washing, slate and other impurities from coal, designed, when coked, for furnace fuel. It is not contemplated to claim very advanced progress in this work, believing that it is susceptible of improvement, but to show that some progress has been made in a comparatively new field, and it is hoped in the right direction, since coke is probably destined to become the principal fuel in the metallurgy of iron. The Broad Top coal region occupies an isolated geographical position, standing 25 miles east from the Alleghany field. It is associated with the latter by the structure of its coal, and more closely with the Cumberland field by a similarity in the quality of coal.

ASIDE from being the youngest of the Porphyries-from a producing, not a geologic standpoint-Andes probably presents the most finished piece of engineering, considering the enterprise as a whole: The various units of the mining and reduction works are well designed and efficiently operated, but that is true also at most of the other properties. Some mills or smelters may be superior to those at Andes; but as a complete mechanism for the exploitation of a big copper orebody, the Andes plant stands in a class by itself in many respects. Chuquicamata and Braden, as well as the properties in the United States, grew piecemeal. Capacities were increased and new plants were built as expansion progressed. Andes, on the other hand, existed on paper essentially as it is today before a start was made on actual construction of the reduction plant. More than $35,000,000 had been spent in developing and equipping the mine, and in building the concentrator and smelter, before the first ton of blister copper was produced on January 14, 1927. And another $12,500,000 was spent during the next two years in building the leaching plant and completing other construction. The orebody had been fairly well developed and tentative plans for the erection of reduction works had been made when the post-war depression descended on the copper industry and dictated deferment of the construction of a plant. This delay, however, gave the engineers opportunity to study the problems thoroughly in preparation for the design of the reduction works. The task was performed at Anaconda, Montana, under the direction of Frederick Laist, metallurgical manager, and Wilbur Jurden, chief designing engineer, of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company's staff. PARTIAL phase diagrams of titanium with iron, cobalt, and nickel have been established by previous investigators.1-3 These diagrams seem to be reliable, at least for concentrations of titanium ranging from 0 to about 50 at. pct. More recently, Long and his collaborators have presented a tentative titanium-nickel diagram covering the titanium-rich side.' These various studies indicate that in each system three intermediate phases exist and correspond to the compositions Tia, TiX, and TiX2 (or TiX3). The purpose of this paper is to review the available information on the crystal structure of these phases and to give the results of additional X-ray diffraction studies. Previous Work A summary of the work of Wallbaum and his collaborators"-' is presented in table I. The first intermediate phase on the titanium-rich side of the three systems, with iron, cobalt, and nickel, is of the Ti2X type and has a face-centered cubic structure. Although it is stated that the unit cell contains 96 atoms: no lattice parameters are given. The second phase is centered around the compositions TiX for the three systems. The crystal structure of this phase is mentioned in a short note" as being body-centered cubic (CsCl type), but no parameters are given. The analogy between the three systems, which is perfect as far as the two phases of the type Ti2X and TiX are concerned, disappears at the titanium-poor end of the diagrams. In the system titanium- iron, TiFe2 has an hexagonal (MgZn2 type) struc-ture with the parameters given in table I. The existence of TiFe3 has also been reported8 (table I) but was questioned by other investigators2 and is also refuted by the present study. In the system titanium-cobalt, a phase corre-sponding to the composition TiCo2 has been investi-gated by Wallbaum and Witte6 who claim that the structure is cubic (MgCu2 type) for alloys slightly deficient in cobalt and hexagonal (MgNi2 type) for alloys slightly deficient in titanium. The parameters of the two phases are given in table I. In the system titanium-nickel, the nickel-rich phase corresponds to the composition TiNi3 and has been described as hexagonal7 with the parameters given in table I. The present investigation was initiated for the purpose of filling in the gaps in the knowledge con-cerning the structure of the various phases sum-marized in table I. INTRODUCTION Slurry systems and mechanical conveying, represent the main methods of transporting solids from one area of a mineral processing plant to another. A well-designed slurry handling system can assist in lowering plant capital costs by reducing building size, simplifying plant layout and reducing operating costs by lowering maintenance and labour costs. This Paper has been prepared with the object of providing a practical approach to designing slurry systems. SLURRY CHARACTERISTICS Slurry is a mixture of crushed or ground rock mixed with water or a chemical solution, and can flow under several different conditions: (a) As a homogeneous suspension; (b) As a heterogeneous suspension; (c) With a moving bed (saltation); (d) With a stationary bed. Homogeneous flow takes place when the solids are uniformly distributed throughout a pipe and when particle sizes are smaller than 325 mesh. Heterogeneous is the most common slurry suspension. In this system, there is a gradual increase in concentration of solid particles towards the bottom of a pipe. There is a fairly wide range of velocities that fall within this system. In moving bed systems, the coarse particles settle out and bounce along the bottom of a pipe. Operating under these conditions tends to minimize wear and power requirements, but because this system operates within narrow velocity limits, pipelines frequently plug. Stationary bed conditions exist when coarse material has settled in the bottom of the pipe restricting the available area. These conditions should be avoided. DESIGNING A SLURRY SYSTEM Slurry can be transported either by pumping through a pipeline or by developing a gravity head and flowing through a pipe or along a launder. When considering any slurry system, whether for the design of a new plant or to make modifications to an existing operating plant, design criteria are required. The design criteria provide the information for calculating the material balance and sizing the equipment. The quantities on the material balance can then be assigned to the flowsheet for reference. THE Sierra Consolidated Mines Co., organized in 1909, owns, together with other holdings, practically all of the productive mineral area in the Ocampo district. Lying within this area are 15 mines, large and small, that had previously been worked and appear to have yielded, since the discovery of the camp, about 100 years ago, bullion of a total value of over $50,000,000. The deepest mine, the Santa Juliana, had been worked to 1,100 ft. below the outcrop. The reopening of the mines involved, first, extensive and thorough development to open up the known ore-shoots at greater depth and explore the ledges for additional shoots, and, second, a revision of existing equipment and methods, so as to increase output and reduce cost of production. This paper will give some account of the metallurgical treatment and a description of the new mill to be built at El Salto.

This paper discusses the metallurgical testing procedures and their applications at the laboratories and mills of Pima Mining Co. The author shows, using discussions and case histories, that routine sampling and evaluation of daily and monthly data can be as valuable as thorough laboratory investigations and mill test work. A great deal of valuable information can be made available this way. This paper discusses laboratory and mill metal-lurgical testing procedures and their applications at Pima Mining Co., located about 25 miles southwest of Tuscon, Ariz. The Company, incorporated in 1951 (the year the orebody was found) in California to operate the Pima mine, is jointly owned by Cyprus Mines Corp., Utah Contruction and Mining Co., and Union Oil Co. Milling started in December 1956. The main Pima orebody is a contact metamorphic vein of copper-bearing hornfels with an average dip of 45° to the south with an east-west strike. The hanging and footwalls are quartzitic pyroclastics (arkosite) containing some sulfides. Barren igneous intrusions are also present. Conglomerates and alluvial wash cover the deposit to a depth averaging about 200 ft. The principal copper mineral is chal-copyrite. Native copper, chalcocite, and minor amounts of chrysocolla and other copper minerals are also present, together with sphalerite and some molybdenite. Generally, it has been noted that the ratio of chalcocite to chalcopyrite is higher in the lower grade ores, while as the grade increases, there are only minor amounts of chalcocite. Open pit mining is employed at Pima, using both trucks and an inclined skiphoist system. A detailed description of Pima Mining Co. operations was presented by Spaulding et all. More recently another orebody to the north and east of the present pit has been discovered and will be placed in operation within a few years. This ore is of a porphyritic rather than a lode nature since values are disseminated in both igneous and metamor- phosed sedimentary rocks. The new orebody is expected to be harder and cleaner than the present deposit. The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Pima Mining Co. nor of the profession in general. PlMA MILL The following outline of milling practice is presented to furnish a background for later chapters of this report wherein specific problems will be detailed and analyzed. Run of mine ore is crushed in three stages, using conventional equipment to 85% minus 1/2-in. for feed to two 10 x l6-ft rod mills operating in open circuit. Each rod mill discharge is split between two 10% x 13-ft ball mills in closed circuit with three 20-in. cyclones. In addition, a 7 x 12-ft ball mill with one 20-in. cyclone receives part of the discharge from one of the rod mills. This equipment was manufactured by Allis Chalmers and Equipment Engineers. The cyclone overflows are combined, sampled and, after joining the regrind cyclone overflow, are distributed into 12 10-cell Fagergren 66-in. flotation machines. The application of other than mechanical methods to the study of the mechanical-physical properties of metals has become in the last few years a topic of investigation of ever-increasing interest, both from the theoretical standpoint and from that of the engineer and constructor. Besides the investigations which have been made of the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic metals, in their relation to the mechanical properties of these metals, which will be discussed more in detail below, there have been made studies of other phenomena in the same relation, and methods for the mechanical testing 'of metals have even been suggested; for example, the microscopic method of Tammann,' and the thermo-electric method of Turnera for determining elastic limits. The application of all such methods, which are based upon the dependence of some physical, crystallographic, or possibly chemical property, upon the mechanical state of the metal, must be preceded by close and careful correlation of these various "test" properties with the known mechanical state of the different metals or materials. It is with this view that the present work, as well as that of many previous investigators of, what may be termed in the interests of brevity, the mechanical-magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials of construction, has been done. Previous Investigations of Mechanical Magnetic Properties The effect of mechanical stresses and of deformation, elastic or otherwise, oil the magnetic qualities of iron, steel, and other metals, has been studied by a number of investigators from the time of Joule (1841) to the present. It will, however, for the present purpose be sufficient to give an account only of the principal results obtained in the course of these investigations. A university is a place to build minds and develop leaders. It provides the tools necessary for the development of new ideas which come from the inquisitive mind and is one of the stepping stones to management responsibilities for the truly ambitious. However, it is not always a financially sound investment! Lately, there have been several articles published on the economic advantages of a college education. These articles tend to average wages together according to education and years of service. Their tabulations generally include the chairman of the board, various vice presidents and plant managers and do not reflect the achievement of the average graduate. They consistently fail to include an analysis of the investment a college education requires. In reality, the bright high school graduate would make more real money over a 20-year period if he went directly to work "on the hill" than he would if he graduated from college. Furthermore, he would find little difference between his wages and those of the college graduate in the period from 20-30 years after high school graduation.

Are from the Greater Butte Project is hoisted through the new Kelley shaft. In 1946 when plans were formulated for the Kelley mine, two test cave blocks were mined by using the facilities of the old St. Lawrence mine. These blocks, known as the Adams No. 1 and Adams No. 2, produced more than half a million tons of ore. The experiment proved beyond all doubt that cave mining was possible- and economical-in Butte. Adams No. 1 was patterned after Inspiration cave blocks. Adams No. 2 was a slusher type, with the slusher lane on the first floor above the haulage crosscut and at right angles to it. Thirty-horsepower electric hoists slushed ore from 48-in. scraper buckets directly into cars for haulage to the shaft. These cars were the 57-cu ft Granby type hauled by 6-ton battery locomotives over 40-lb, 18-in. gage track. Prior to this time the largest slushing machines used at Butte were 15-hp electric hoists pulling 36-in. scrapers.

The use of sulfuric acid in refining illuminating oils antedates the beginning of the petroleum industry in America by many years. It was used as early as 1792 by Tower in refining "coal oil" in the British Isles, and by 1860 there were 53 refineries in the United States manufacturing "coal oil," most of them using sulfuric acid as a refining agent. Following the completion of the Drake well in 1859, many of the "coal oil" refiners began to use petroleum for manufacturing illuminating oil, and their methods and equipment were adapted so far as possible to this new raw material. The value of sulfuric acid in refining L'coal oil" having been established, this reagent was immediately tried and found to be satisfactory in refining petroleum. Notwithstanding the tremendous advances in petroleum technology since that time, sulfuric acid remains today the most valuable and most widely used means for refining petroleum products. Early Methods of Disposal of Acid Sludge With the almost immediate expansion of the petrolrum industry came the problem of disposing of the acid sludge produced in the refining operations. While in 1859, the year of the discovery of the Drake well, a patent was granted for sludge separation and separated acid concrntration, most of the earlier refiners, and rnany of their successors, felt that separation and recovery of spent acid was uneconomical. Accordingly, many of then) disposed of the sludge in any way that seemed expedient nt the time. It was huricd in the refinery grounds, harged and tlurnped at sea, run into neighboring streams, or dumped into sewers. Some optimists carted it to open pits in the hope that it would eithcr sink into the ground or evaporate. Not so many years ago, the superintendent of nn eastern refinery, who was using the open-pit method of disposal, lost, a sludge cart, with horse attached, in such a pit. The horse was recovred almost immediately, but its availability for further use was reduced to zero by the loss of its hair.

WHEN Agassiz and his party of geologists commenced their exploration of the interior of Brazil and the Amazon region, one of the first and, to the last, one of the most novel and striking phenomena which met them everywhere was the great depth of decomposed or partially decayed rock in situ, which mantles, and for the most part conceals, the underlying strata. The same facts strike all geological observers from the North who happen to penetrate the middle and southern latitudes of the Atlantic States. In North Carolina, e. g., the entire middle and western regions, outside of the Quaternary clays, sands, and gravels of the East,-that is, all that portion of the State occupied by the Arch can and Mesozoic rocks,-show everywhere this peculiarity, so new to those accustomed to glaciated surfaces. An exact statistical treatment of a one-dimensional model is used as a basis for evoluating the reliability of certain simplified expressions for the activity of the solute in interstitial solutions, including one obtained from the exact expression by setting the repulsive interaction equal to infinity. The latter approximation is found to be satisfactory at low and moderate concentration if the repulsive interaction is large, even though not infinite. A similar expression (identical if the co-odination number is two) is derived from the quasichemical expression of Lacher, and is recommended as the best available expression for the excess configurational entropy of interstitial solutions with excluded sites. Some reasonable models are discussed, and the nature of the saturated solutions is determined by inspection. Some of the models reduce to the one -dimensional case. An analysis is given of the excess partial entropy of hydrogen in V-H; Nb-H; and To-H solutions. MOST treatments of the statistical thermodynamics of interstitial solid solutions have followed the classic paper1 of Lacher in making the simplifying assumption that the configurational entropy of the solution is ideal. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that there are many interstitial solutions with very large so lute-solute repulsions, and for these the assumption of ideal entropy is not valid or useful. It is important to realize that with substitutional solutions large repulsions between the component atoms must lead to phase separation, whereas in interstitial solutions the free energy of the solution is not drastically increased by large solute-solute repulsions until intrinsic saturation is reached at the concentration where further solute would be forced to enter a site in which it would experience the repulsive effect of one or more solute atoms already present. In the limiting case of an infinitely large repulsive interaction, the excess free energy would be attributable entirely to excess entropy, the enthalpy of mixing being zero. AS will be shown below, even if the repulsions are less than infinite, a treatment based on an assumption of infinite repulsions may be very satisfactory up to moderately high concentrations of the interstitial component. Often in solutions where large repulsive interactions exist, there are also small interactions — often attractive—between solute atoms in configurations other than that corresponding to the large repulsion. In such cases the excess free energy will consist of an excess entropy term attributable to the large repulsive interactions, and an enthalpy term corresponding to the other small interactions. Nomenclature to differentiate succinctly between important cases would be a convenience. In this paper the nomenclature shown in Table I will be used. In Table I, and in the preceeding discussion, excess quantities are defined in terms of standard states which are pure solid solvent and pure (possibly hypothetical) solid saturated phase of the structure in question. In practice, it is more convenient to choose the interstitial element as a component, and its conventional standard state. This will add a composition-independent term to the excess entropy and the enthalpy. The earliest paper known to the present author which treats the thermodynamics of athermal interstitial solutions was given by schei12 in 1951, but the statistical derivations in that paper are open to criticism. Speiser and Spretnak were the first to give a correct statistical treatment,3 limited, however, to concentrations sufficiently low that the number of empty sites excluded from occupancy by more than one filled site is negligible. The purpose of the present paper is to extend the statistical treatment to more concentrated solutions, and to examine the magnitude of the errors introduced by assuming that the repulsive interactions are infinite when in fact they must be finite. THE QUASICHEMICAL APPROXIMATION Fortunately, a standard method already exists for taking into account the effect of large interactions upon the entropy of mixing. This is the quasi-chemical method, in which the probability of existence of a given pair of solute atoms in a certain proximate configuration is assumed to be proportional to exp(-w/kT), where w is the energy increase of the solution when the two atoms are moved from isolated locations in the solution to the configuration in question. A quasichemical treatment of interstitial solutions was given in 1937 in a widely neglected paper by Lacher.4 The result comes out

PRINCIPLES OF TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION IN MAGNETIC INSTRUMENTS The principle underlying the majority of magnetic intensity variom-eters is a comparison of the force to be measured with another force of known magnitude. The known force may be (a) of a magnetic nature, such as magnetic fields produced by magnets or coils, or (b) of a mechan-ical nature, such as (1) the elastic forces of wires, or (2) the force of gravity, such as employed in bifilar magnetometers and magnetic balances. In instruments of such type, usually a magnetic system is employed, free to move about either a horizontal or vertical axis, on some sort of a suspension. If the earth's magnetic field alone were present, such a system would adjust itself into the direction of the field or that of its components. Owing to the simultaneous action of the comparison force, however, the magnetic needle assumes a position that differs from the direction of the magnetic force; for all such instruments, the angle of deflection a is given by tan a = F/X, where F is the known and X the unknown earth magnetic force component. In other words, the magnetic system merely serves as an "indicator" for the position of balance of the two forces. Considering the matter from this point of view, it is not immediately obvious why the temperature of such a magnetic system should modify the results. In magnetic instruments, we may distinguish two different effects of temperature: (1) a magnetic effect and (2) a mechanical effect. The first is due to the fact that the magnetic moment of a magnet drops with an increase in temperature. This drop is characterized by the temperature coefficient of the magnetic moment µ (see equation 1). The second effect is due to the change in the .torsion of suspension wires with temperature or to the expansion of lever arms of masses acting on magnetic balances.

Six compositions of polycrystalline ZY-0 alloys, containing up to 4.2 at. pct 0, were tested in tension between 77° and 600° K. The data obtained from each of the compositions corresponded closely to a rela-ion between yield stress and absolute temperature of the form In s/so = BT, where oo is the yield stress extrapolated to zero degrees and B is a constant. In agreement with others who have observed this relationship, it is shown that the activation energy may be expressed as Ho In so/s. In the present specimens Ho is approximately 18,000 cal per mole and is apparently independent of temperature and composition inside the limits of the investigation. It is also demonstrated that this form of activation energy cowesponds to a strain rate sensitivity parameter RT/Ho. Oxygen was also noted to have an effect upon the operative deformation mechanisms. With increasing oxygen concentration there was an increased tendency to observe both nonbasal slip and cross-slip phenomena. Oxygen does not seriously inhibit twinning more than it does slip. Twins were observed in all specimens tested. It is becoming increasingly evident that interstitial atoms in solid solution are able to interact strongly with mobile dislocations. Stein, Low, and seybolt,&apos; have shown that, if the carbon concentration in bcc iron is lowered below the solubility limit, its flow stress temperature dependence is markedly reduced. This suggests that carbon atoms in interstitial solid solution may be responsible for the pronounced temperature dependence of the flow stress normally observed in iron. This view has recently been challenged by Leslie and sober2 who observed a strong flow stress temperature dependence in iron to which a trace of titanium had been added in order to remove carbon atoms from solution. Since the interstitial concentration must be reduced below approximately 1 ppm in order to produce a pronounced effect on the flow stress temperature dependence,&apos; studies of the effect of interstitials on the flow stress in iron necessarily involve serious experimental difficulties in alloy preparation. There are other metals, however, in which strong effects of interstitial solutes upon both the flow stress and its temperature dependence are observed. Of particular significance is zirconium which, according to Domagala and Mcpherson, 3 is capable of dissolving 28.6 at. pct O. The O-Zr alloy system is an almost ideal system for studying the interaction of interstitial atoms with deformation modes since it is possible to form alloys capable of study over an extensive range of compositions. Mills has made such a study using single crystals oriented primarily for single prismatic slip4 and has found an effect of oxygen concentration on the flow stress temperature dependence analogous to that observed in iron due to carbon by Stein, Low, and Seybolt. The present paper is specifically concerned with the effect of oxygen on deformation in polycrystalline zirconium. Although plastic flow in this type of specimen is much more complex than that reported for the single-crystal work, and involves both slip (on several different types of planes) and mechanical twinning, the results of this investigation are in general agreement with the single-crystal observations concerning the effect of oxygen on the temperature dependence of the flow stress. In addition, they also demonstrate that oxygen affects the acting deformation systems. This is in contrast to single-crystal results4 that showed only single slip on a prism plane. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Material. High-purity hot-rolled zirconium strip, 0.2 in. thick by 4 in. wide, of 0.10-mm average grain diameter, was used for forming alloys. It was obtained from the Carborundum Metals Co., Akron, N.Y., whose analysis indicated the major impurities were, in wt ppm: Hf, 540, C, 145; Fe, 100; and 0, <80. The plate texture was similar to a wire texture, with basal planes generally parallel to the rolling direction and basal poles randomly distributed about the rolling direction. The heat treatments described below did not appreciably alter the basic texture. specimen Preparation. Small threaded-end tensile specimens were machined from the plate with axes perpendicular to the rolling direction. These transverse specimens had gage sections 1 in. long by 0.060 in. in diam. The improvement in leaching introduced by the Russell process has stimulated the development of processes for refining lixiviation-sulphides. In the early days several processes for dealing with the sulphides were proposed, and some of them were tried more or less ; but the business finally settled down to sending the sulphides to the smelters, although this was known to be both troublesome and expensive. In 1891 Mr. C. A. Stetefeldt* introduced at the Marsac mill, Park City, Utah, an unpatented process, built up out of the general fund of information available. It consisted in matting the sulphides, grinding, roasting, grinding again, and dissolving the copper out in diluted sulphuric acid, then melting the silver and crystallizing the bluestone. It did not yield fine bullion, hence the bullion had to be refined as well as parted; besides, there was some loss. This process was thoroughly tried at the Marsac refinery and then a year&apos;s run was made, the net result of which was that it did not prove sufficiently better than the sending of the sulphides to the smelters to warrant its substitution for that practice. In 1893 the Dewey-Walter Refining Company undertook the refining of the Daly sulphides in the Marsac refinery by the sulphuric acid process, upon which two United States patents ? have been issued to the writer. Naturally, difficulties were encountered in starting a new process, and most of 1893 was taken up in getting it into smooth working order; but in 1894 a run was started, in which all the regular sulphides produced by the
