A practical program of education for workers of the mining industries is being formulated by the Federal Board for Vocational Education in cooperation with the states in which this industry is a dominant one. The Federal Government last year passed a law, known as the Federal Vocational Education Act, that provides for the promotion of vocational education and for cooperation with the states in the promotion of such education in agriculture and trades and industries and in the preparation of teachers of vocational subjects. More than 1,000,000 men in the continental United States are employed in mines and quarries. The following table, from the 1910 Census Report, shows the relative importance of mining and manufacturing pursuits: Manfactures Mines and quaRRies Employees.......... 7,405,313 1,109,410 Capital............. $18,428,269,706 53,380,525,841 Value of product..... $20,672,051,870 $1,238,410,322 Of the more than 1,000,000 men employed in mining, almost three-fourths are engaged in the production of bituminous and anthracite coal; one-fifth, in the production of copper, iron, lead, zinc, and other metals; and the remainder in getting out structural and miscellaneous materials from quarries. The meeting of the needs of the coal-mining industry, therefore, is the problem of greatest importance in the point of numbers to be served. Moreover, the dangers in coal mining are greater than in metal mining. Practically all states have set up educational and technical standards for the position of foreman, boss, superintendent, etc., and every applicant for these positions must have a certificate of competency. The qualifications, too, are becoming increasingly difficult in the field of technical information. In some states, every miner must have a certificate, which is issued by the mine examining board only after an oral examination. SOME problems concomitant with commercial exploitation of marble are presented as examples of interesting, useful and profitable fields for application of scientific knowledge. The marble industry is only one such field and is selected because its varying new aspects are familiar to the author. However, what is true for marble is equally so in principle for many industrial minerals. The problems of any stone industry are to maintain markets, create new outlets for stone already in demand, and develop varied uses for varieties that are not so popular. Here the geologist has a different role from most of his colleagues in metal mining. The producing branch may ask about the expectable variation in thickness or size of a deposit as development proceeds. The stock department may call for the available amount of a given type of stone before accepting a large order. The sales force requires data on the use for stone from certain parts of deposits in order to divert grades to the most suitable use. The service department wants defects rectified and the cause determined to avoid recurrence. The mills want data on durability and cutting quality of abrasives. The geologist occupies no special department; he is on general call, as may be illustrated by a few types of problems that may be classified as: (1) dominantly geological in character, (2) dominantly chemical in character, (3) dominantly physical in character. GEOLOGICAL PROBLEMS The geological problems deal almost exclusively with the size of blocks. Size across the deposit is limited by thickness of individual beds, and along the strike by the space between crosscutting joints. Frequently the vertical depth of a block is reduced by exfoliation shells arising from spontaneous expansion. All these factors require consideration in developing a deposit to fill an order. THE process of comminution by grinding is properly classified as an art, rather than as a science. Like most other operations concerned in ore dressing, or in the treatment of nonmetallic minerals, the mathematical relationships of rock breaking are still obscure, and much disputed. If some basic formula exists, comparable for instance to E = RI in electricity, it has not yet been placed in, common use. The absence of such a comprehensive mathematical background undoubtedly is the cause of many inefficient designs and installations, as well as of much poorly oriented experimental work. On the other hand, the mathematical immaturity of the process constitutes an opportunity for a real contribution on the part of those who enjoy mental pioneering. Some of the statements made in any such exploratory work may be little more than opinions, and it is to be expected that some will later be proved untrue; but such an evolutionary development is necessary if we are ever to arrive at the fundamental laws, the discovery of which can change the empirical art into a mathematically exact science. The most significant principle of comminution that we possess is probably Rittinger's law, which states that the work done in crushing or grinding is proportional to the area of the new surface produced. There is an alternative theory, known as Kick's law, which formerly was preferred to Rittinger's but which now is rather discredited. According to Kick, the work done in comminution is proportional to the volume, or weight, of the pieces broken, or to the cube of their diameters, while according to Rittinger it is proportional to the square of the diameters. Careful determinations of size distribution below the limit of sieve sizes1 indicate strongly that under ordinary grinding conditions the amount of new surface area produced is directly proportional to the net power input. Changes in the size ratio between the balls and the particles cause important differences in the proportion of the product that passes a given mesh size, but do not affect the total amount of new surface area; they merely change the distribution of the surface among mesh sizes. The principle of constant surface area is the logical result of Rittinger's law, and it may well have an important bearing on the comminution theories of the future. FORMULA FOR BALL WEAR Grinding tests have been made in the Allis-Chalmers laboratory for more than 9 years, using a standard charge of mixed balls of different sizes; and a continuous record has been kept of the rates of wear of each size. SMALL additions of potassium, aluminum, and silicon as oxides (referred to as dope) to tungsten have been known for several decades to have a very large effect in raising the recrystallization temperature and altering the recrystallized grain morphology of heavily drawn wire. Previous investigations of this doping effect1 6 have led to various speculations but all failed to deduce unequivocally the physical state or the mechanistic influence of the dopant. Recently, walter7 has observed, by transmission electron microscopy, strings of "fine particles" in heavily rolled and annealed doped tungsten sheet and concluded that they were particles of mullite (Al6Si2013). His conclusion was inferred from the electron diffraction patterns of large particles ex-trated by carbon replication of fractured surfaces of slabs rolled from sintered ingots. That the strings of "fine particles" in heavily rolled and annealed sheet were also mullite was an assumption for which no evidence was presented. A similar investigation has been carried out in this laboratory over the past 2 years on a variety of tungsten wire: doped tungsten, and undoped tungsten, as well as 218 doped tungsten purchased from the Lamp Metals and Components Department of the G.E. Lamp Division. Although the electron microscope observations are similar to those reported by Walter, the writer has reached a different conclusion concerning the physical state of the dopant in annealed tungsten. The purpose of this communication is to present evidence that the strings of "fine particles" observed in transmission specimens are not mullite, but are voids. In the present investigation, tungsten wire, 0.88 mm in diam, was rolled into ribbon 0.2 mm by 125 µ thick. The ribbons were annealed in vacuo at a pressure of -1 x 10-5 Torr and then thinned electrolytically in a 2 pct KOH solution. Fig. 1 shows a typical transmissicjn electron micrograph of a sample annealed at 1700°C for 30 min which reveals rows of closely spaced voids having a light contrast (referred to as "fine particles" by Walter) aligned parallel to the working direction. Stereo micrographs (by D. Moon, Westinghouse Research and Development Center) have shown that these voids do not exist on the surfaces of the specimens as a result of thinning but are within the thin-foil specimens. The following experiments have been performed to verify that these are indeed voids. I) Effect of Annealing. Voids are absent in unannealed specimens and appear only after annealing. This behavior cannot be explained if they were solid particles such as mullite. Precipitation (in an unquenched specimen) upon annealing requires solute elements having decreasing solubilities with increasing temperature. Although the solubility of aluminum in tungsten does decrease with increasing temperature, precipitation requires a concentration in excess of 1.4 wt pct,8 which is at least two orders of magnitude higher than the aluminum content in doped tungsten. Several methods have been proposed for determining the tensile strength of rock. These have been tried out over the past several years, but the results have been erratic and of doubtful value. The tensile strength of rock is its weakest property, and this property apparently enters into all failure phenomena, whether underground or on the slope of an open pit. Therefore, it is essential that detailed quantitative information is known about the tensile strength of rock if the design engineer is going to select the proper pit slope, pit orientation, or orientation of underground workings so as to give the most economical and safest mining condition. This quantitative information may be used to orient the pit in such a manner as to allow steep slopes along two sides. This information possibly may be used to orient the direction of either underground workings or open pits so as to decrease powder consumption and to increase blasting efficiency. Hence it is of prime importance that a method of determining accurately the tensile strength of rocks be developed. The U. S. Bureau of Mines states' that no standard methods have been proposed by the ASTM for testing the tensile strength of rock. The method described in the Bureau publication is said by them to be unsatisfactory. A similar test that has been used in our laboratory in place of the USBM test is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. h this test the core is placed in a set of grips that has been designed for one particular size core. The grips are designed to distribute the stress around the core if they are tightened correctly. A universal joint or a flexible cable may be used in conjunction with the apparatus to prevent bending or twisting of the specimen. The main difficulty encountered with the system shown is the failure of the specimen within the grips. The possible cause of the failure within the grips may be due to a stress concentration set up by the uneven tightening of the grips. This method can be used only for tests on cores, and even then has been found to be totally unsatisfactory because of the failure within the grips. The U. S. Bureau of Reclamation has been using a test similar to the sketch shown in Fig. 3. Sulfur is cast around each end of the specimen to form a bearing surface and then a ring grip is used to apply a tensile stress. The grips are in contact with the sulfur cast and do not touch the specimen. This method is unsatisfactory, apparently because a large number of the specimens appear to break within the sulfur cast. Professor Wuerker of the University of Illinois uses the test shown in Fig. 4.' Professor Wuerker states2 that this method has given definite and reproducible results with the weakest as well as with the strongest rocks. Twelve years ago, the Director of the United States Geological Survey addressed to the Secretary of the Interior a letter calling attention to the government's need for liquid fuel for naval use and pointing out that the rate of increase in demand was more rapid than the increase in production.' This letter, in a way, inaugurated the policy of public oil-land withdrawals, which was well founded in its primary purpose of protecting the oil industry and highly desirable in its immediate effect of checking the over-development of that day in California. Unfortunately, however, through delays in legislation, this policy may be regarded now as having outlived both its intent and its usefulness. In 1908, the country's production of oil was 178,500,000 bbl., and there was a surplus above consumption of more than 20,000,000 bbl. available to go into storage. In 1918, 10 years later, the oil wells of the United States yielded 356,000,000 bb1.—nearly twice the yield of 1908—but to meet the demands of the increased consumption more than 24,000,000 bbl. had to be drawn from storage. Nor is this all of the brief comparison. In 1918, our excess of imports over exports of crude petroleum was nearly 33,000,000 bbl. whereas in 1908 we exported 3,500,000 bbl., which was net, as we had not begun to import Mexican oil. In this period, the annual fuel-oil consumption of the railroads alone has increased from 16,871,000 to 36,714,000 bbl.; the annual gasoline production from 540,000,000 gal. to 3,500,000,000 gal. This record may be taken not only as justifying the earlier appeal for Federal action, but as warranting deliberate attention to the oil problem of today. Need of Future Supply The position of the United States in regard to oil can best be characterized as precarious. Using more than one-third of a billion barrels a year, we are drawing not only from the underground pools but also from storage, and both of these supplies are limited. In 1918, the contribu-

Van Stone mine area is situated at the head of Onion Creek on the northwest flank of Gillette Mountain, Stevens County, Washington. The di strict was found during World War I, but the mine did not come into production until 1952. Production to the end of 1965 was 2,242,960 tons of ore that yielded 10,700 tons of lead concentrates and 120,000 tons of zinc concentrates. The area is part of the Selkirk Mountains Zinc-Lead Belt, or Kootenay Arc, extending from near Revelstoke, British Columbia, to Colville, Washington. A thick but incomplete section of Paleozoic marine formations occurs in the Kootenay Arc and is overlain by marine and continental Mesozoic formations. Both are invaded by Late Mesozoic-Tertiary batholiths. The belt is characterized by open complex folding and extensive high-angle and local thrust faulting. Principal ore deposits occur in the highly deformed carbonate rocks of Cambrian age-the Maitlen (Laib) and Metaline formations. The Van Stone mine occurs along a steeply S-shaped fold lying between the Kaniksu Batholith on the west and the Rogers Mountain Fault, a northeast-trending fault on the west flank of the Gillette Mountain Anticline, to the southeast. The fold is cut by northeasttrending faults containing notoriously irregular lamprophyric, diabasic, and pebble dikes. The host rocks, lower Paleozoic dolomites, are decolorized, silicified, and silicated in the mine area. Jasperoid and tremolite are the common alteration minerals. Other gangue minerals are barite, pyrite, brucite, calcite, and, near the batholith, pyrrhotite. Ore minerals are galena, jamesonite, and sphalerite. Ore minerals occur in bunches and pods intergrown with tremolite and jasperoid. Zinc is roughly eight times more abundant than lead. The highest ore outcrops at 3870 feet elevation, and an undeterminable portion has been removed by glacial scour. The lowest drill hole penetration has reached 3220 feet elevation. Oxidation ranges up to several hundred feet in depth and may be most closely related to pre-glacial groundwater circulation. The area of the mine was completely over-ridden by Pleistocene continental glaciers, and the present erosion surface is nearly continuously blanketed by up to 150 feet of glacial outwash.

IN the silicothermic reduction of magnesia, burned dolomite is treated with high grade ferrosilicon in an evacuated steel retort at temperatures between 1150° and 1200°C. The following reaction is assumed to occur MgO + CaO + 1/2 Si (Fe) - Mg(g) +- & Ca,SiO, + Fe with the equilibrium constant on the basis of thermodynamic data for the substances involved and assuming unit activity for all solid constituents, Kubaschewski and Evans' calculated the magnesium pressure as a function of temperature logp,, (mmHg) = 15.06-1.61 T- log T- 13,16O/T. Pidgeon and King," who measured the magnesium pressure by means of a flow method, found values about three times the calculated ones. This may be caused by uncertainties in the thermodynamic data, but may also be caused by the formation of other reaction products, such as Ca,SiO,, which is known to be the stable silicate in equilibrium with lime. Whatever the exact reaction may be, it is evident that as long as all other factors are maintained constant the magnesium pressure will vary with the silicon activity, viz: p,, = &,. (p,,) ", where (p,,)" is the magnesium pressure by the reduction with silicon of unit activity. In the present investigation, p,,, was therefore measured for various grades of ferrosilicon and their silicon activities were calculated. The experimental method was similar to that used by Pidgeon and King. Briquettes of burned dolomite and Fe-Si alloys were placed in a 1 in. heat resistant steel tube and were heated to 1200°C. By means of a flow of purified hydrogen, the magnesium vapor was swept into a condenser filled with steel wool. From the amounts of hydrogen used and magnesium condensed the magnesium partial pressure was calculated. First a tube of 28 pct Cr steel, and later a tube of Kanthal D (a ferrous alloy with 22.6 pct Cr, 2 pct Co, and 4.5 pct Al), was used as a heat resistant tube. The latter tube showed the best heat resistance. The dolomite used had the following composition: 43.6 pct MgO, 55.5 pct CaO, 0.2 pct K,O + NalO, 0.2 pct Fe,O,, and 0.3 pct insoluble. The ferrosilicons were prepared from 98 pct Si of technical grade (0.7 pct Al, 0.3 pct Ca, and 1 pct Fe) by melting with various amounts of electrolytic iron of high purity. The alloys thus obtained were analyzed on their iron and silicon contents, which added up to between 99 and 100 pct. The amounts of reactants were chosen so that there would always be an excess of the oxides, and the average decrease in silicon content during the experiments would be about 1 pct. Most of the reaction occurred in the part of the reaction mixture facing the gas flow. The change in the silicon concentration in the part facing the condenser was, therefore, negligible. THE quality of sheet and strip products made of rimming steel is closely related to the structure and chemistry of the ingots. The varia-tion in composition throughout the ingot, as affected by segregation, is of great importance, as are also the form and distribution of the voids that result from the gases evolved. It is because of this importance that the considerable literature in this field has accumulated. No attempt is made in the present paper to compile a bibliography of the excellent work that has already been done, as this has been adequately covered in the many excellent reports on the heterogeneity of steel ingots prepared by a joint committee and published by the British Iron and Steel Institute.1 From time to time, in any field of investigation new tools and new technique are developed, which make further progress possible. In the field with which this paper is concerned, this is true. The development of the vacuum-fusion method as a means of following oxygen segregation, and a technique for obtaining the volume and composition of the gases evolved during solidification, have opened the way to obtaining data by means of which some considerable progress has been realized in developing more of the detailed mechanisms of solidification and segregation in rimming-steel ingots.

No mystery shrouds the discovery of chromium. The indefatigable French chemist Vauquelin, in reporting his discovery of this chemical element to 1'Institut National in 1798, concluded his discourse with the statement: "I place before the eyes of the Institute a small quantity of chromium and several of its most re- markable combinations." Working with the so-called "red lead of Siberia, Vauquelin not only prepared numerous chemical compounds of the new metal, but he reduced the oxide to the metallic state. These chemical compounds possessed a variety of remarkably distinctive colors; so, acceding to suggestion, Vauquelin named the new element chrome (chromium), a derivative of the Greek word chroma, meaning color. Siberian "red lead" (crocoite) was not plentiful; however, it was not long before Vauquelin's prediction was realized that the chemical compounds of chromium would become useful in the arts when sources of chromium became more readily available. Although chrome-iron ore (chromite) became obtainable in France, the United States and elsewhere during the early part of the nineteenth century, it is interesting to note that from 1828 to about 1860, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and others of the eastern United States furnished almost the entire chrome-ore requirements of the world. Methods in colorimetry are based on the assumption that the intensity of the' color of a definite volume .of solution is directly proportional to the quantity of the color-producing substance present. In the preparation and examination of colored solutions there are three ways in which the depth of color may be varied. These variables are : (1) the quantity of' the coloring matter; (2) the quantity of the solvent, or the dilution ; and (3) the thickness or depth of that portion of the solution examined. With these three variables as a basis, three general methods in colorimetry have been devised, all of which have been used in the determination of carbon in steel. In the first method, the quantity of the solution is kept the same for both the unknown steel and the standard, and the sections compared are of equal thickness, while the quantity of the standard is varied until the color obtained is of the same intensity as that produced by a definite quantity of the unknown steel. In laboratories where this method is used there is prepared and kept for permanent use a series of solutions with varying amounts of the standard, representing the percentages of carbon from the lowest to the highest demanded in that laboratory. These standard solutions are kept in bottles or test-tubes of equal diameter, and are arranged in series from the faintest to the most intense color, so that it is a simple matter to find the place of the unknown steel in the series, when the solution is of a definite volume and is contained in a tube of the same diameter as the standard tubes. NO ADEQUATE salary scale, at the present time, can ignore the increase in the cost of commodities 'during the last few years or- afford to assume that this increase is merely temporary. A study of the change in prices and wages during and after the Civil War is of interest in connection with changes that have taken place from 1913 to 1919. The curves on the accompanying figure, based on reports of the War Industries Board and Department of Labor, show these changes. During the Civil War retail prices rose to 164,2 per cent. of the prices of 1860, during the next 8' or 10 years. It is interesting to note that the rise in wages during the Civil War was almost simultaneous with the rise in the prices of commodities. During the World, War, the rise in wages has lagged about a year behind the rise in prices. Furthermore, in the period immediately, following the Civil War, wages continued to rise after prices started to fall, The present price level is not considered merely temporary by such of our Government agencies as the Department of Labor and the Federal Reserve Board or by such economists as Irving Fisher' and J. INTRODUCTION India like USA has traditionally relied on bord and pillars as dominant underground method. Coal has generally been mined at shallow depth from relatively thick and horizontally bedded coal seams. These' factors contributed towards large scale adoption of bard and pillar. After nationalisation of coal industry in two stages in 1971 and 1973, large scale mechanisation and modernisation programmes were undertaken. Longwall mining was identified as one of the major that area for increasing underground coal production. The idea to introduce longwall mining was mooted to increase productivity and to promote conservation and safety. The nationalised coal industry has already worked about twenty longwall faces with different types of support. The tempo of introducing longwall is catching up and a number of longwall programmes with, Self advancing supports of different types and Capacity are in active stage of implementation. The country has not yet started producing mechanised Supports and therefore supports and machineries are being imported from U.K. and other countries of the continent. The of the major problem faced in the longwall projects is to choose suitable type and capacity of supports. The suppliers and manufacturers of these supports are not competent enough to choose and offer the right type and capacity of supports as their knowledge and information about Indian strata conditions are extremely limited. The Central Wining Research Station (Q.!RS), has undertaken a research programme for evaluating the rock mechanical conditions obtaining in the proposed longwall locales and has worked out a method for selection of proper type and capacity of supports on the basis of projected strata behaviour at the proposed locale. STRATA CCNTROL FAILURES Indian coal industry had made some attempts to introduce longwall caving in the early fifties after a working group set up by the Government of India had recommended its adoption to increase productivity and to modernise mines. Approximately 20 longwall faces were tried in the major Indian coalfields of Jharia, Ranigunj and Karanpurr between 1951 and 1968. The supports used consisted of 20T hydraulic props or 35140~ friction props. A number of these faces had suffered total strata control failures and a large number of support elements were lost. The Central Mining Research Station initiated a research programme to analyse these failures in the general background of behaviour of Indian coal measure strata at longwall faces. All the available data regarding the cases of failures were collected and physico-mechanical properties of overlying roof rocks were determined in the laboratory. Simultaneously, observations were continued to establish the behviour pattern of Indian coal measure strata at longwall faces. These studies were helpful in analysing the occurrences of collapse. BEHAVIOUR OF INDIAN COAL MEASURE STRATA The coal measure strata encountered in the principal Indian coalfields of Jharia, Ranigunj and Karanpura are in general strong in nature however, the immediate roof (mostly up to 1.5 to 2 m) in most of the cases is weak and false bedded shale. The rise of drain holes drilled from a well to improve productivity is becoming increasingly common. This paper presents data on the productivity increase that may he expected. The data were obtained by use of an electrolytic tank mode1 of a reservoir. Parameter varied in the study to show their effect on productivity include the length, number, and arrangement of drain holes, formation thickness, and damage near the well-hore. The most important results are that very large increases in productivity can be expected only ill damaged wells. The distance, to which drain holes penetrate is of primary importance. Additional length is more effective than increasing the number of drain holes. INTRODUCTI O N In planning the use of drain holes to improve productivity, it is important to he able to estimate the increase in production that can be obtained for a given expenditure. It is also important to know what combination of parameters related to the use of drain holes can he chosen to give the largest production increase. This paper presents data on the productivity increase that may be expected, as obtained by use of an electrolytic tank model of the reservoir. In this study, :! number of parameters were varied to show their effect on productivity. These included the length, number, and arrangement of the drain holes. The presence or absence of a damaged zone of low permeability around the well-bore and the thickness of the producing formation were also considered. The productivity increase that might be expected due to drain holes is presented as the ratio: productivity of a well after drain holes are drilled and completed to the productivity of the same well in an undamaged state without drain holes. The symbol Q/Qo is used to represent this productivity ratio. Thus, the comparison in each case is with a formation of uniform and undamaged permeability. Additional notation includes I;, for the radial extent of the damaged zone, which is assumed to be cylindrical and concentric with the wellbore. Thus the effect of an actual block is approximated by a discontinuous varia-tion in permeability. For purposes of this paper, the permeability within the damaged zone, denoted by kb, is assumed to be 1/25 that in the remainder of the formation, or k. A necessary assumption in making comparative tests using an electrolytic model is that reservoir flow behavior can be approximated by single-phase, steady-\tate flow according to Darey's Law. In addition, the formation must be assumed to be homogeneous with equal horizontal and vertical permeability. The well-hore diameter in this study is assumed to be 11¾ in. and the drainage radius of the well equal to 500 ft. The drain holes are considered to have been completed without damage. THE ELECTROLYTlC MODEL 'She producing formation was modeled by forming a sheet of phosphor-bronze into a cylinder 40% in, in diameter to represent the boundary of the drainage area. Froth flotation is now used to recover millions of tons of fine coal,(-1/2 mm), every year. For example, in Great Britain, 4-million tons of flotation concentrate was produced in 1960, about 3% of the mechanically cleaned out- put and 2% of the total salable output. Coal flotation is not so widely practiced in the U. S. as it is in Europe since much American coal occurs in thick seams of high grade and does not require cleaning. However, in the U. S., as elsewhere, the increasing mechanization of coal mining machinery has lead to a lowering in size and grade of product from the mine and to an increasing need for cleaning of coal to improve the grade before sale. With an increasing proportion of fines in the product, froth flotation has assumed a greater importance as a cleaning process for coal. In the last three years, over 40 flotation plants have been put into operation in the Appalachian area of the U. S.80 Fine coal recovered by means of froth flotation may be used as a powdered fuel alone or mixed with coarser grades. The removal of this fine coal from washery water makes possible the recirculation and re-use of the water and also leads to improved and more consistent operation of jigs and other separating machines which function less effectively when there is a build-up of fine solids in the washery water. Finally, froth flotation is of assistance in the production of a clarified effluent which may be discharged from the washery without polluting local rivers, streams, or wells. The 1961 cost of installing a new coal flotation plant in Great Britain would be about $19,000 per ton of dry solids input per hour, including the cost of new buildings and coal and shale filtration and water clarification equipment. The figure for the gravity concentration of the large coal, the main plant, would be about $4,800 per tph. The operating cost for the new coal flotation plant would be about $1.10 per ton. Even at this level of cost the cleaning operation is economic in Great Britain for coking coals. In the U. S., a froth flotation cost of 14$per ton of cleanfilter cake was quoted early in 1958 for one operation,l though admittedly this was a special case. Assuming a cake moisture con- tent of 30%, it is estimated that this cost is equivalent to a figure of 256 per ton of dry solids input, for the incorporation of coal flotation in an existing washery. A cost oh 416 per ton of concentrate was quoted76 in a recent analysis of flotation economics, this cost being brought up to $1.11 per ton after payment of royalty, welfare and association dues and taxes. Capital cost was $120,000 for a plant producing 133 tpd of concentrate. Before considering the treatment of coal by flotation it is appropriate to survey some of the properties of coal which are of importance in the process.

Pacific Rim countries currently have plans to import about 100 Mt/a (110 million tpy) of steam coal by 1990. Due to its close proximity, Powder River Basin coals offer a long term economic and dependable source of supply to the Pacific Rim. In existing boilers, Powder River Basin coals can be blended with Australian, South African, or Canadian coals. For new units, Powder River Basin coals are very competitive on a total evaluated cost basis. The advantages of using Powder River Basin coal include: assurity of supply, consistent coal quality, stable labor force, and attractive mining economics.
