The entire production of oil in Ecuador so far has come from the Santa Elens Peninsula, Province of Guayas. Both the shallow fields of the northern and the deeper fields of the southern part of the peninsula have been in constant exploitation, though the former are of doubtful economic value. In Table I herewith, which commences with the total amounts produced by the various companies up to 1940, annual company totals are given for the succeeding years. The figures for 1944 have been partly estimated. Table 2 gives figures on casinghead gasoline. Shell Company of Ecuador (formerly known as Anglo-Saxon) has continued active exploration in the Oriente region east of the Andes, and during 1944 the Company's first wildcat well was spudded in. International Ecuadorean Petroleum Co. (formerly International Petroleum Co., Limited) has pursued an active exploration campaign since the latter part of 1939, and a drilling string was placed in operation about a year later. A second string of tools was added during 1943 and a third a few months ago. Ten wildcats, all dry, have been completed in this period, two wells are drilling at the present time and other locations are on the program. Seven of the wells thus far drilled are in the area between Guayaquil and the Santa Elena Peninsula, one up the Daule River beyond Balzar, one on Puna Island in the Guayas Estuary and one in the northern province of Esmeraldas. Both the present drilling wells are in the Guayaquil-Santa Elena zone. The situation in regard to concessions has changed during the past four years because I.E.P.C. has made its selections from the extensive Daule-Guayas Study Concession, as a result of which large tracts were returned to the Government; because of the expropriation of the holdings of the "Ecuapetrol," a German concern whose acreage has passed into other hands; the Peruvian-Ecuadorean boundary settlement, which has reduced Shell's holdings somewhat; and the transfer of most of the holdings of the Cia. IBC has developed a cost effective MRT process for the selective extraction and recovery of gold, copper, and a mixture of other base metals from mine leach cyanide solutions. This is a two-stage system in which the gold is first recovered selectively as a high purity salt. The copper is then recovered separately as a sulfate salt. The other base metals are then collected as a cyano anion concentrate. Three different SuperLig® materials are used. The first stage can be used alone on gold leach solutions where copper and other base metals are not a problem. The two or three stage system is used when the base metals build up in the leach solution, resulting in increased costs. The cyanide or cyanide/cyano anion concentrate can be recycled back to the leach solution until the build-up of other salts, etc. becomes too high, or this too can be controlled with a percentage bleed stream.

After 1990, a great process of re-organisation and economic reform has occurred in the Romanian mining sector and especially in the pitcoal mining in the Jiu Valley. This process has included both legislation and the main aspects for getting an economic efficiency in the environment issues and for dealing the problems with social impact. Accordingly, starting with the year 1993 a new mining method has been introduced to turn efficient the pitcoal mining, and we speak about mining with caved in bed. This method has two variants: - with transverse strips and caved in bed; - with long face and caved in bed. Each of the above-mentioned variants has in turn several subdivisions, depending on how the longwall is prepared and on other characteristics. By using this method, the output has increased compared to other mining methods. The main safety aspects concerning caved in mining refer to: - great emissions of methane; - technical aspects (a mining method system, supports, discharging process); - pressure driving (analysed for the case of mining with long face, with transverse strips as well for the case of transverse strips when mining a subsequent sublevel).

During the 1980s, a revolution has been taking place in industrial minerals marketing. Transportation deregulation and a handful of creative marketing and distribution managers have completely changed the rules for marketing many industrial minerals. Minerals are being transported much farther than in prior decades and at much less cost. Bulk and package terminals are becoming increasingly common as a means to take advantage of freight rate savings and to provide enhanced service to faraway customers. Water and rail transportation are being used increasingly to penetrate markets considered unreachable just a few years ago. No longer do the textbook rules of thumb for industrial minerals marketing apply. This author recalls three of those rules he was taught in mineral economics graduate school in the 1970s. As recorded in class notes: • construction aggregates are seldom shipped more than 32 km (20 miles) from the quarry; • cement is sold within 240 km (150 miles) of the mill; and • industrial sand is sold regionally - it is freight constrained to a market radius of no more than 320 to 400 km (200 to 250 miles) from the plant. And yet, the author looks up in 1989 and observes overland movements of aggregates of many hundred miles, overland movements of cement and industrial sand of 1600 km (1000 miles) or more, and water movements of both aggregates and cement into the United States from sources halfway around the world. Truly, industrial minerals are in the midst of a marketing revolution. The companies that have led this revolution have enjoyed considerable financial success in the 1980s. They have enhanced their profitability by increasing market share, capacity utilization, and average selling prices by taking product to remote markets where premium prices are available. They have consistently outperformed their competition, many of whom remain unaware that the marketing revolution going on around them is actually a transportation/distribution revolution. The successful industrial minerals company of the next 10 to 15 years must participate in the transportation revolution as it continues to evolve. In this National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigation, numerical modeling is used to evaluate the degree the pillar strength is increased with a rectangular pillar over a square pillar. Three-dimensional models are developed with pillar sizes and geometries typical of underground limestone mines in the United States. Physical properties for the models are based on geotechnical surveys of nearly 30 underground limestone mines. To examine the effects of pillar length on pillar strength with the modeling, a parametric study was conducted where the pillar width was held constant while the length and height were varied resulting in width-to-height ratios ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 and width to length ratios ranging from 1 to 6. There are two aspects to pillar strength and failure. At relatively low stresses, pillars can fail as a result of geologic structure. At greater depths and sufficient extraction ratios, the pillars can also fail as a result of the vertical stresses exceeding the pillar strength. The effects of increasing pillar length regarding both strength aspects are presented in this study. Equations were developed for the increase in pillar strength with both height and length based on the model results. The results from these equations were compared to those from previously developed empirical equations for rectangular pillars. For the more slender limestone pillars with a width-to-height ratio below one, there is little increase in pillar strength for length-to-width ratios above 2 and almost no increase with length for a width-to-height ratio of 0.5. Only with the more squat pillars is there a significant improvement in strength with length. The gain in pillar strength with length for the pillars is explained by the change in the ratio of the area of the pillar affected by the ends to the area of the pillar. For the squattest pillar, the change in strength is also affected by an increase in pillar confinement along the central length of the pillar as the pillar transitions from a square to a long rectangular pillar. With geologic structure, added pillar length can significantly improve the pillar strength, depending on the strike of that structure with respect to the long pillar axis.

While the neurological and vascular aspects of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) has been generally accepted as a medical condition, the medical criteria and the clinical findings used to establish the diagnosis has been more difficult to bring to consensus. The criteria was first quantified by the Taylor-Palmear scale.1 This criteria was subsequently modified in 1986 at the 1st Stockholm Workshop2,3 to included more acceptance for the neurological effects that characterized the predominate findings in some workers. The relationship between hand-arm vibration and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was defined in NIOSH 97-1414. While the aforementioned documents have defined the clinical entities associated with hand-arm vibration exposure, agreement on the clinical findings and test to confirm the diagnosis has be been more difficult to bring to consensus. Clinicians assessing HAVS has relied on a number of varied neurological and vascular tests. The neurological testing has focused on assessing damage to the sensory capability of the fingers for the neurological component including tests to measuring ability to sense vibration, cold or other end point finger sensor functions. However, the vascular testing has been traditionally focused on the ability to either measure vascular function or to reproduce the vascular blanching that occurs in HAVS with cold water provocation. Recent assessment of this testing in the United Kingdom Coal Miner’s study has questioned the value of this testing especially in reviews by McGeoch.5 In an attempt to provide some type of definitive testing to substantiate vascular damage from hand-arm vibration exposure, angiography is an alternative or adjunct to cold water provocation testing. The standards that have been established to predict the level, type and incidence of HAVS have been based on clinical studies and reports that have essentially been all male populations. However, the recent entry of women into more vibration intensive jobs has brought about the exposure of some women to high levels of vibration previously only previously experienced by men. However, there have been only few studies that look at HAVS in women6. Although exposed the same vibration levels, it has not been clear that the latency and type of pathology of HAVS in women will be the same as for men. The purpose of this study is to look at recent case studies of men and women exposed to jobs with high levels of hand-arm vibration with extensive clinical testing for both the neurological and vascular components of HAVS as well as other associated upper extremity conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

The paper point out the testwork has been carried out with real process solutions from the Chambishi cobalt plant in Zambia, showing that the ISEP® continuous ion exchange system can effectively remove nickel from cobalt sulphate electrolyte. Laboratory testing confirmed published data, and was subsequently verified on site at Chambishi in a pilot test program. Based on the testwork data, a commercial unit is being installed at Chambishi.

The prime objective of geometallurgy is to improve the profitability of mines through the use of spatial models of rock properties that have a significant impact on value. Although a key property is the grade of the component of interest, because it directly influences the revenue from saleable material, increasingly attention is being focused on other attributes. These 'non-grade' variables may have a less direct, but equally profound impact on value, either by reducing potential revenue (eg lowering recovery, deleterious elements, etc) or increasing mining or treatment costs (eg comminution, grindability, throughput, reagent use, etc). Collectively, these variables have been described as 'geometallurgical'. There are three main areas of activity required to realise the value of geometallurgy: 1. acquisition of appropriate data through sampling and measurement, 2. building spatial models of geometallurgical variables, and 3. using these models to optimise value. Each of these is built on the foundation of the preceding step. In building reliable spatial models, it is critical that the amount of error introduced to data by the sampling and measurement processes is understood and quantified, in order that the inherent variability of the component of interest can also be properly understood. Management of the quality of grade variables is now applied (with different levels of diligence and success) across nearly all sectors of the mining industry, not least because of the necessity to adhere to Codes of practice (eg JORC, 2004). The necessity for quality management and at least the broad framework of what to do in practice is reasonably understood by many relevant professionals. There are also a number of tools, including software products, statistical analyses and presentation formats, available for those managing grade data. It is also abundantly clear, that in many cases people have little understanding of why they are doing particular quality control activities, or how to sensibly interpret the results. The same is not true for many geometallurgical variables. In almost all instances the authors have seen, the magnitude of sampling and analytical/measurement error variance embedded in geometallurgical test data is untested and unknown. This is partly because until relatively recently, metallurgical data has mainly been collected for the purpose of process and mill design, with few, expensive tests carried out on 'average' samples of the orebody. Increasingly however, there is a move towards collection of much larger data sets from spatially distributed sampling, and thus a growing necessity to understand the errors inherent in both sampling and analysis of these types of variables, and how to manage them. In order to understand how the quality management practices applied to grade variables can be extended to geometallurgical variables, it is essential to understand the theoretical foundation that supports these practices. This requires an analysis of the concepts that underpin the 'principles of additivity' (Matheron, 1963), the 'theory of sampling' (Gy, 1982, Pitard, 1993), and 'statistical process control' (Shewhart, 1930). Relevant concepts are then integrated to form a foundation to develop methods to improve the quality management of geometallurgical variables. Application of this framework will significantly increase the integrity of geometallurgical data, the reliability of geometallurgical models and ultimately the value derived from implementing geometallurgy. Metal removal kinetics and metal ion selectivity in ion flotation were studied from a thermodynamic perspective. Surface tension data could be used with the Gibbs adsorption equation to quantitatively predict the metal ion removal kinetics in alkylsulfate-Cu systems. However, surface tensions predicted cation selectivity coefficients in the sodium dodecyl-sulfate (SDS)-Cu-Ca and SDS-Cu-Pb systems rather poorly, although the predicted order of the selectivity (Cu2+<Ca2+<Pb2+) was correct. Another thermodynamic selectivity model, which used the Grahame adsorption equation and a geometrical analysis, predicted cation selectivity coefficients that agreed very well with experimentally measured values.

"A method for determining the fineness of Au in electrum from the composition of fahlore coexisting with pyrite and chalcopyrite is presented. This method is based on previously published experimental brackets and activitycomposition models for electrum and fahlore, and it is potentially useful for defining temperatures of hydrothermal mineralization and retrograde evolution of precious metals deposits. The authors demonstrate that it successfully predicts compositions of electrum reported for this assemblage in the literature and illustrate its application for three gold-quartz vein deposits from the Coeur d’Alene mining district, Idaho, that are prospects of the New Jersey Mining Company, the Coleman vein, High-Grade prospect, and Silver Strand mine. Temperatures calculated from average electrum compositions estimated from gravity concentrates (molar Au/(Au+Ag) = 0.76-0.39) and from microprobe analyses of the fahlores (molar Ag/(Ag+Cu) = 0.039 ± 0.004, Zn/(Zn+Fe) = 0.57 ± 0.03, As/(As+Sb) = 0.23 ± 0.02) from the Coleman vein indicate that the electrums underwent retrograde re-equilibration to temperatures between about 80°C and 240°C, roughly 80°C below the temperature of hydrothermal mineralization and 10°C to 40°C above the temperature inferred for retrograde equilibration of Fe and Zn between sphalerite and fahlore. Fahlores from the High-Grade prospect [molar Ag/(Ag+Cu) = 0.009 ± 0.004, Zn/(Zn+Fe) = 0.55 ± 0.11, and As/(As+Sb) = 0.04 ± 0.03] and Silver Strand mineralized zone [molar Ag/(Ag+Cu) = 0.10 ± 0.04, Zn/(Zn+Fe) = 0.63 ± 0.02, and As/(As+Sb) = 0.06 ± 0.02] exhibit strong core to rim depletions in Ag due to retrograde operation of the reaction1/10Cu10Fe2Sb4S13 + Ag + FeS2 =Cu-fahlore electrum pyriteCuFeS2 + 1/10Ag10Fe2Sb4S13chalcopyrite Ag-fahlorewhich proceeds to the left with decreasing temperature. Electrum inclusions in arsenopyrite from the High-Grade prospect [molar Au/(Au+Ag) = 0.90 ± 0.02] define a minimum bound on the temperature of hydrothermal mineralization of 273°C, and the temperatureelectrum composition curve constructed for the most Ag-rich fahlore in the Silver Strand mine indicates that the fineness of its electrum is significantly less than in the other deposits."

Abstract Hydraulic fracturing is a technology that has been utilized for more than 50 years in the oil industry. It was originally used for stimulating hard, brittle formations which typically exhibit low permeabilities and roughly linear elastic behavior. Nonetheless, an increasingly important segment of the industry is currently stimulating very soft and poorly consolidated formations; where the assumptions of ideal elasticity and relatively small fluid leakoff fail to hold (e.g. Gulf of Mexico, West Africa, Alaska, East China). In these rocks, hydraulic fracturing stimulation has been used for several years to control and solve critical production problems such as sanding and formation damage (caused during completion and drilling operations). Although successful1, the application of this method has not been accompanied by robust fracturing modeling techniques. In addition, long term production increases were often not materialized. In other words, engineers have been able, via trial-and-error, to avoid major ‘operational’ problems but with no optimization of such treatments. Thus, most hydraulic fracturing projects carried out in poorly consolidated rocks render unexpected results. A recent worldwide survey on net pressures by the Delft Fracturing Consortium (Papanastasiou, 1997) indicated that net pressures encountered in the field are 50% to 100% higher than the net pressures predicted by conventional fracturing simulators. The difference is yet higher for the case of poorly consolidated formations (Pak, 1997). The theory for the construction of a fully coupled elastoplastic three-dimensional hydrofrac simulator, specifically conceived for unconsolidated rocks, is presented in this paper. This novel model calculates the dimensions and changes in shape of the fracture(s) being created during hydraulic fracturing operations. No assumptions are made regarding either shape or geometry of the crack(s). Three main failure criteria are used simultaneously in this model: tensile and shear stresses, and volumetric strain. Incremental forms of the governing equations of equilibrium and fluid flow are presented. The scheme chosen for solving this problem is the finite elements method, which allows both equations to be solved simultaneously at any instant in time. Résumé La fracturation hydraulique est une technologie qu’a été utilisé pour plus que 50 ans dans l&apos;industrie pétrolière. Elle a été utilisée au début pour stimuler les formations dure et fragile que typiquement ont des perméabilités basses et un comportement élastique à peu près linéaire. Néanmoins, un segment plus important de l&apos;industrie stimule actuellement des formations mal consolidées; où les suppositions d&apos;élasticité idéale et de relativement petite fuite de fluide ne se tiennent pas raison (par exemple le Golfe de Mexique, l&apos;Afrique d&apos;ouest, Alaska, la Chine de l&apos;est). Dans ces roches, la stimulation avec fracturation hydraulique a été utilisée pour plusieurs années pour contrôler et résoudre les problèmes critiques de production comme les dommages de formation et d’ensablement (causé pendant les opérations de l&apos;accomplissement et forage). Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 µm for coal and 10 to 100 µm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal). This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 µm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from dissolved air in fine coal slurry. Results indicate that combustible recovery of a -150 µm coal was increased by 5-50% for different size fractions in presence of nanobubbles, depending on process operating conditions. Other major advantages of the nanobubble flotation process include lower collector dosage and air consumption since nanobubbles are produced from air naturally dissolved in water and they act as a secondary collector on particle surfaces, thereby resulting in considerably lower operating costs. The Clyde Power Project, and its Clutha Valley Development forerunner, has taken widespread investigations for various hydroelectric purposes both along the valley floors upstream from Alexandra and on the higher schist terrain. As part of this work the nature and extent of many of the alluvial deposits have been resolved and the ages established with&nbsp;varying precision. Gold values have been approximately appraised in some areas as an element of environmental assessment.

This report presents an economic mineral assessment and Inventory of mines and prospects In the approximately 176,000-acre Patagonia Mountains-Canelo Hills Unit of Coronado National Forest. Deposits or areas most likely to experience future development are characterized in terms of their economics, based on data acquired by the author from a variety of sources, and supplemented by USBM field data collected by other workers in 1990 and 1991. Numerous mine maps, rock-chip sample assays, and detailed descriptions of mine and prospect sites are in this report and appendixes. Heavy but sporadic mining, mainly between the 1850&apos;s and 1950&apos;s was nearly all confined to the Patagonia Mountains. High-grade sulfide veins, replacements, and skarn deposits accounted for most of the production, which included large quantities of zinc, lead, copper, and silver, and considerable quantities of gold. Small Quantities of molybdenum, manganese, tungsten, and placer gold have been mined. Most of the traditionally mined metalliferous sites will not see future activity due to the low tonnages present and removal of most high-grade rock. Possible future development areas include copper porphyries and breccia pipes; most are too deeply buried for current development. Localities where similar deposits may be concealed are identified.

"This paper describes the use of dynamic scheduling and discrete event control to provide coordinated control of multiple automated vehicles. This work has been carried out within ongoing research into multi-robot coordination developed around the underground mining scenario. Demonstrations using scaled laboratory models of underground mines illustrate the potential for this technology for full-scale implementation for mine-wide automation. IntroductionIn the past decade, the mining industry has been improving the efficiency of underground mining operations. Robotics and automation have demonstrated the potential to further reduce costs. Tele-operation of underground vehicles from above ground and autonomous navigation have reduced travel delays and allowed for single operator control of multiple vehicles (Bloomquist and Hinton, 2001). Other recent projects include the automation of the digging process as well as the drilling and blasting operations. Infrastructureless guidance systems are also being developed (Bloomquist and Hinton, 2001).Mine-wide automation requires significant developments at two levels: (1) the development of mining robots capable of performing tasks either autonomously or semiautonomously; and (2) the development of methods for automating operations at a systems level. This paper focusses on the latter, and describes a general framework for the coordination of multiple mobile robots in an unstructured or semi-structured environment."

"I think that you will agree with me that we have an excellent program planned for the next three days, comprising various interesting and educational subjects by authors of prominence, which will be of keen interest to all of us in the coal industry. "The Program Committee, chairmanned by John Peperakis, has done an excellent job in securing this very splendid talent for our convention. "I would like to say a word as to the, condition of the coal industry in our part of the country as well as elsewhere. I believe we can look at it with more optimism than in the past several years, particularly in the state of Colorado, with which I am more familiar. "Annual coal production in Colorado gradually dropped from around 12 million tons during the years of World War I to as low as 8 million tons during the last war, and to less than 3 million tons in the year of 1954. We believe that it touched bottom that year, as in 1955 the state production went up again to nearly 3,400,000 tons, equivalent to an increase of 15%. As you know, the national increase in bituminous coal production for the year of 1955 was roughly 2000 over 1954. "The national increase for the first two months of 1956 over the same period of 1955 is approximately 2100. Colorado&apos;s production is running around 1000 over the comparable period of last year, and the 5 states represented by our Institute came up with a nice increase in 1955 over 1954 of 1000. "Figures on the increase so, far in 1956 for this group of states are not readily available, but I fully believe that. our industry locally, as well as nationally, is now starting out on a steady rise despite the fanfare of nuclear energy and its more glamorous competitor, solar energy. Many authorities tell us that real competition from these sources is a long way off and that the atomic energy program will consume far more coal than is displaced by nuclear power. Communities are the foundation upon which the whole structure of society rests and upon which the nation builds its hope for the future. They are not established to serve any one particular generation, nor any one element or group, but should be erected to render a lasting service to all who are to follow. They play a very vital and important role in the lives and welfare of the people, in their industrial, business, and social relations, and in the economy of the nation, of which they are the fundamental assets. Communities and civic governments are destined to be vital factors in the national welfare in the days that are to come. Any improvement in national or world conditions must have its origin within the communities. Any attempt at solution of the community problem must give some consideration to the fundamental elements which exist in every community, and to the underlying principles, and ways of life and thought, upon which community life is based. The community is, in its essence, a number of people living and working more or less closely together, sharing common rights, privileges, conveniences, and comforts, which would be impossible for the individual to obtain for himself by his own efforts alone, or in any other way than by the mutual exchange of persona! services and resources. In this way, men have increased the returns from their labour and commerce, have raised the standard of their living, with better social, educational, and recreational facilities, and enjoy a greater personal security.

The purpose of this study was to assess the adequacy of the cab design and to determine the percentage of musculoskeletal symptoms among operators of mobile equipment used in mining and construction. A questionnaire was designed to assess demographics, work information, job history, and musculoskeletal symptoms in operators of heavy mobile equipment. Information concerning equipment included design of the seat/chair, levers, pedals, bothersome vibration, quality of ingress/egress from the equipment, proper preventative maintenance and repairs, and age of the equipment. The body regions that were evaluated included the neck, middle/upper back, low-back, shoulder/upper-arm, elbow/forearm, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot. Five hundred and eighty six operators completed the questionnaire. The results indicate that these workers are at risk for developing musculoskeletal disorders, and the need to quantify risk factors (i.e., whole-body vibration and static sitting postures).

This study was performed for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. An existing computer simulation of a dragline was modified to simulate a dragline dumping into the hopper portion of a cross-pit conveyor system. This revised computer model was then used to study four proposed cross-pit conveyor systems. Parameters such as dragline position, hopper position, and digging procedure were varied to maximize the dragline production. This performance was compared with the conventional side-casting spoil method. I t was concluded that the cross-pit conveyor systems were competitive with the conventional side-casting technique.

Historically, this area produced gold and silver from many well-known vein deposits, like Tayoltita, Topia, and San Jose de Gracia. Modern exploration identified three categories of deposits: 1) low grade porphyry golds in shallow level dacite porphyries; 2) batholith-related deposits; and 3) those formed in volcanic sequences of Late Cretaceous to Late Tertiary. At least four porphyry golds have been identified, of which Metates is best known. These are formed by and within daciteporphyries, associated hydrothermal breccias and sometimes within surrounding meta sediments. Their ages are from mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary. Precious metal deposits associated with batholiths occur as veins, contact haloes in meta sediments or volcanics, skarns, tectonic breccias, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias, dacite dikes or as disseminated or stockwork deposits such as La Fortuna.Several new gold discoveries were made in older EarlyTertiary Volcanic Sequences and in the younger Tertiary volcanics within prominent structures exceeding 3 to 5 km in lengths. Some of these are open-pittable but most have to be mined by underground methods.
