Between February and August of 1986, Dr Alfred Petrick visited New Zealand sponsored under a Fulbright grant administered by the New Zealand-United States Educational Foundation. The grant supported a research project completed by Dr Petrick having as an objective, the preparation of a preliminary economic evaluation of the mining of six Otago lignite deposits as a source of energy for steam power generation or in liquid fuels. The research is limited to consideration of preliminary geological and engineering data on the six deposits and to the time constraints of the Fulbright visit. This paper is a summary of the final Fulbright report. The complete report including the listings of the computer programs is available from the Otago School of Mines.

"This paper describes the development of an innovative effluent treatment process for cyanide and heavy metal removal from tailings wastewaters at Hemlo Gold Mines Inc. Golden Giant operation.The importance of minimizing dissolution of contaminants in the gold leaching circuit is discussed, as well as using recycled water in milling circuits to the fullest extent possible. Finally, a brief description of the role of natural cyanide degradation in the tailings pond is provided.Emphasis is placed on the need for overall water quality management to ensure minimum effluent treatment process costs and complexity while producing excellent quality effluents.1.0 INTRODUCTIONHemlo Gold Mines Inc. owns and operates its Golden Giant Mine located forty kilometres east of Marathon, Ontario. The Golden Giant mine is one of three gold operations exploiting the large gold orebody located in the Hemlo area. The milling facilities include two stage secondary crushing, three stage, closed circuit ball mill grinding with no reagents, thickening, cyanide leaching and carbon in pulp gold recovery unit operations. The average throughput is 3000 tonnes per day of 10 grammes per tonne gold ore. Figure 1.1 shows a schematic flowsheet of the operation."

The San Vicente Tunnel Project is an 11-mile water tunnel constructed for the San Diego County Water Authority. One of the many challenges of the project included tunneling a 22,000-foot single-heading tunnel on the western half of the job in varying geology using a 3.66m (12ft) diameter open shield excavator or ?digger shield.? This paper will discuss the design considerations for the temporary liner, the tunneling, and ancillary equipment. It will also highlight the challenges faced while mining this geology, explain the methods implemented to drive this section of tunnel, and discuss the experiences while performing mechanized tunneling in an extensive and varied San Diego geology.

Research was conducted to study the characteristics of longwall mining machine noises and to develop engineering controls for the reduction of noise exposure at longwall faces. Time-motion noise dosimeter data was analyzed and compared with existing databases. Experiments were conducted above ground on a stage loader/crusher to explore the potential of using active noise control (noise cancellation) in reducing the noise levels. A 5-7 dBA reduction in recorded stage loader noise was achieved. This paper presents the equipment, procedure and results of the noise surveys, as well as the active noise control experiments.

The focus in the iron ore industry has shifted from increasing production volumes with less regard for cost, to efficient production of quality tonnes. BHP Billiton iron ore geoscience and exploration has embedded infrared spectroscopic sensing of drill hole samples to help meet this challenge.Infrared spectroscopy is delivering mineral predictions that are used for (automated) geology logging and modelling. The spectra are processed together with other available data sets to predict geometallurgical and geotechnical variables that include lump per cent and uniaxial compressive strength.Trials are ongoing to test the benefit of infrared spectroscopy during mining, including the analysis of grade control samples and remote sensing of mine faces. Results show great benefits in the fields of short-term geology modelling, better understanding of material (handling) properties, identification of geotechnical risk areas and high resolution ore-waste delineation.These trials are bringing BHP Billiton iron ore closer to its ultimate goal of having infrared spectroscopic data collected across the mining value chain. Once such data are available everywhere, regression models can be trained at one point (eg iron grade model trained on exploration samples) and be applied elsewhere (eg iron grade predicted on mine faces). Such predictive analytics will enable not only high precision mining, but also provide maximum time to tailor plant design to the ore in the ground, based on learnings from ores processed in other plants. The refraction seismic method has been used as an indirect means of exploring for fluorspar in southern Illinois by the Illinois State Geological Survey. Use of the method has been restricted to those areas where mineralization is associated with faults, a restriction necessitated by the operating principles of the refraction method. The seismic data enable the interpreter to locate fault zones in the subsurface and, under ideal circumstances, to make estimates of dip direction and magnitude and vertical displacement provided the local stratigraphic units are known and are geophysically recognizable. In this instance, refraction seismic exploration has been successful in the surface mapping of well-developed faults, both simple and complex with which fluorspar may or may not be associated. However, less clear results have been obtained where faulting has been less severe and where there are numerous accompanying mineralized joints.

A Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is being planned at the site of the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, under the sponsorship of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the US Department of Energy (DOE). This national facility will host a variety of multidisciplinary science and engineering experiments including physics experiments that require shielding from cosmogenic radiation. Geotechnical mapping was performed in 2010 in large excavations of the Davis Campus at the 4850 Level of the former Homestake Mine. LIDAR mapping included laser scanning using a red light laser scanner and 288 Mpixels 360° still camera. The resulting vector map with the photographs digitally draped over the model, was used to create an accurate, virtual model of the excavations. For model verification, the laser scanning was accompanied by surveying and manual mapping of the geology and rock structure. The immediate use of the model was to perform structural analysis and interpretation of geology needed for the design of the DUSEL?s super large excavations. The second round of scanning, after the application of shotcrete to the excavations walls, will be used as a technical blueprint to assess the effectiveness of shotcrete application.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses the electric-arc reduction of zirconium and hafnium oxides with carbon yielding a metal-metallic carbide mixture. The carbon to oxide ratio in the feed determines the metal to carbide ratio in the product. A sample of this product was produced -or testing as a feed for the deBoer iodide-dissociation process. A new technique for producing pure carbides is described, which uses the intense heat of the arc to volatilize the carbide. The NZ Minerals Industry Association has continued to advance the interests of the minerals sector through leading the establishment of a Minerals Industry Advisory Committee, and the preparation of a technology strategy with funding assistance from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology. The current moves mirror those of more than 30 years ago when a government initiative led to a resurgence of exploration through amending the mining legislation, redirecting Government research priorities and tax changes. The economic and political and commercial environment in 2001 is very different from that of the 1960s and success of these new initiatives depends on the continuing support and involvement of all sectors of the minerals industry, and building an improved relationship with the Government and the public.

Arc flash generally refers to the dangerous exposure to thermal energy released by an arcing fault on an electrical power system, and in recent years, arc flash hazards have become a prominent safety issue in many industries. This problem however, has not been effectively addressed in the mining industry. MSHA data for the period 1990 through 2001 attributes 836 injuries to “non-contact electric arc burns”, making it the most common cause of electrical injury in mining. This paper presents results from several elements of a recent NIOSH study of arc flash hazards in mining, and provides information and recommendations that can help reduce these injuries. Characteristics of past arc flash injuries in mining are first outlined, such as the electrical components and work activities involved (based on MSHA data). This is followed by a review of important concepts and terminology needed to understand this hazard. Next, methods for identifying, measuring, and managing arc flash hazards on a power system are covered, with emphasis on recommendations found in NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Finally, results are presented from a detailed arc flash hazard analysis performed on a sample mine electrical power system using IEEE 1584-2004a, focusing on components and locations presenting severe hazards as well as engineering solutions for reducing the risk to personnel. The metallographic structures most frequently encountered in rifle barrels, and which are illustrated by the accompanying photomicrographs, fall naturally into two groups, distinguished by the method used to, produce in the stock a physical condition having the requisite properties. The fist group consists of "rolled" barrels; that is, barrels subjected to hot working by rolling in or near the critical range. In the second group, the stock, which is smaller in diameter than the first, is upset to form the butt end and is then heat treated by giving it a quench and a draw. These barrels will be referred to as " heat-treated " barrels. The structure of the rolled barrels resembles closely that of the same steel after annealing. There is the same network of excess ferrite outlining the grain boundaries, but the grains themselves are composed of sorbite rather than pearlite. The grain size is closely related to the rolling temperature. The critical-point curves of this grade of steel, which is approximately 0.50 to 0.60 per cent. of carbon and 1.00 to 1.30 per cent, of manganese, show a single very pronounced point between 1300" and 1350" F. (704" and 732" C.). Barrels rolled within this temperature range give an exceedingly fine grain, shown in Fig. 1. In fact, the grains may be so fine that, at a low magnification, they may be confused with the heat-treated structure shown in Fig. 6. A magnification of 500 diameters, however, will always resolve a rolled barrel into the characteristic structure shown in Fig. 2. As the temperature is increased, the grains are found to be larger. If, on the other hand, the rolling temperature is below the critical range, the structure previous to rolling will not be obliterated, the only effect of rolling being to elongate the coarse sorbite grains in the direction of rolling, Fig. 3. This distortion is greatest at the muzzle. Heat-treated barrels are quenched in oil from above the critical range, which should give a martensitic structure, Fig. 4, but the presence of some troostite in the martensite is frequently noted when the quench has not been sufficiently drastic, Fig. 5. The structure brought about by the subsequent draw is not so striking, though quite as typical. It is sorbitic or sorbito-pearlitic, and under a low magnification appears almost homogeneous, as in the case of fine grains of pepper and salt well mixed together, Fig. 6. A common problem encountered in British coal mines is bearing failure on conveyor system idler rollers, which on occasions has led to fires. The UK Mines Inspectorate initiated a study of such failures to assess the potential for ignition of explosive atmospheres. As part of this study HSL have developed a system to measure the temperatures generated within the bearings during controlled failure. Temperatures are measured using both infrared thermal imaging and contact thermometry. The work to date has shown that temperatures well in excess of the auto-ignition temperature of methane can occur.

The Voisey’s Bay deposit contains a trace amount of cadmium, which reports to solution during pressure leaching of the nickel concentrate at Vale’s Long Harbour Hydrometallurgy Plant, and must be removed to produce high quality nickel cathode. In 2006, Vale approached Sherritt Technologies to collaborate on the development of a process for removing cadmium to low levels (<1 mg/L) in the nickel raffinate. Following successful bench scale and pilot plant testing at Sherritt’s laboratories, the cadmium removal process was then moved through engineering and construction, culminating in the successful commissioning and startup of a cadmium removal circuit at the Long Harbour Hydrometallurgy Plant in 2017. This paper presents the results of this collaboration and the challenges that were encountered through each stage of development, as well as current results from operation of the commercial cadmium removal circuit. INTRODUCTION Vale’s Long Harbour Processing Plant, with a nameplate capacity of 50,000 t/y nickel, began operation in 2014. In addition to electrolytic nickel rounds, the plant also produces electrolytic cobalt rounds and copper cathode. The Long Harbour Processing Plant uses a unique hydrometallurgical process developed by Vale Base Metals Technology Centre, as shown in Figure 1, to treat a nickel sulphide concentrate produced at the Voisey’s Bay mine and mill located in northern Labrador (VBN concentrate) (Stevens et al., 2009).

It has been observed that the productivity of ferromanganese furnaces, and the stability of metal and slag compositions, vary considerably according to the type of coke used as reductant. However, the desired properties of coke for optimum furnace performance are not well understood. In this investigation, the behaviour of four cokes, which exhibited a wide range of performance in ferromanganese production, was investigated by means of laboratory simulations of reducing conditions in the furnace. The Stationary Charge in Controlled Environment (SCICE) technique was used to simulate the conditions in the furnace shaft. Batches of raw materials, mixed in the same proportions as used in practice, were heated at fixed rates to 900, 1100 and 1300°C then cooled. The mass loss was used as a measure of the degree of reduction. Conditions in the lower part of the furnace were simulated by means of melt-reduction experiments in which lumps of coke were drilled out to form crucibles in which enriched ferromanganese slags were reduced at 1500 and 1550°C then cooled. An examination of the raw materials and the cooled, reacted charges using a variety of analytical and characterization techniques enabled the sequence of reaction and changes in morphology of the raw materials to be followed. This enabled an understanding of the behaviour of the cokes during reduction to be developed, which was then used to explain the observed performance of the cokes in practice. By relating the observed behaviour of the cokes in the laboratory tests to measurable properties of the unreacted cokes and to their observed performance in practice, it was shown that to achieve high productivity and good furnace performance, cokes should be selected to have moderately high reactivity towards CO2 (Boudouard reactivity) relative to conventional iron blast furnace cokes.

Earlier this year, Simplot Phosphates achieved a safety milestone at its Vernal, UT phosphate operations. In March, the entire operation reached achieved seven years without a lost time accident. And the mine operations at Vernal reached the 1 million hours benchmark without a lost time accident. This million hour achievement has been 19 years in the making. This achievement reflects the mine’s strong attitude towards safety, the company said. Safety is an integral part of its culture and requires diligence and considerable work. Attention to even the smallest of details cannot be allowed to slip. This is a record Simplot Phosphates said it hopes to improve on every day.

Nickel is recovered as a by-product of the platinum-producing process operated by Anglo Platinum. The metal is mined mainly as sulphide minerals contained in platinum ores. These pass through the concentrating, smelting and converting process route and nickel is finally recovered by electrowinning. Smelting of the concentrated ore in the electric furnace produces a melt with a high slag to matte ratio. The resulting furnace slag is granulated and later milled and floated to recover matte. A project was initiated to investigate the distribution of nickel in the slag in order to improve recovery. Slag samples were examined using a combination of chemical and mineralogical techniques. The granulated slag was found to consist mainly of a silicate glass phase, which reflects the composition of the molten slag in the furnace. Nickel occurs as free matte granules, as matte phases locked inside the glass, and in the glass phase itself. Whereas nickel in the matte is as sulphide, most of the nickel in the glass phase appears to be oxide- bound(i.e. in solid solution). Milled slag as flotation feed showed recovery-limiting features such as free matte with oxidized surfaces and unliberated matte inclusions in the slag. The biggest nickel losses, assuming no tapping problems, are in the glass phase solid solution. Only around 40% of nickel would be recovered from the slag, even under ideal conditions. Spoon and pot slag samples were also examined to see if casting and crushing would improve recovery. Although larger and therefore more easily recovered matte phases formed, nickel partitioned into crystalline silicate phases, limiting the maximum theoretical nickel recovery to 70%.

In general, overall experience has shown that the approach to the appointment of a project manager is given much attention, but little specific attention is given first to the risk associated with the project conceptual design and its overall executability within either the new legislative framework or the sustainability of the outcome. The risk in project executability and sustainability within the ?new age? legislative framework of the Mining Charter, etc, is itself however, of far greater importance. The degree of importance being defined by the intended projects impact on the business going forward. This is particularly the case where the intention of the implementation is effectively to turn around or even enhance a loss-making strategic investment like a mine or process plant operation in an ?old-order rights? or Brownfield?s operation. This paper attempts to highlight the importance of a ?pre-project project? (PPP) to mitigate the risk in the ?new age?, with specific reference to operational due diligence (ODD) and project conceptual design.

Geological Parameters Controlling the Improvement of Manufactured Sand Using Vertical Shaft Impact Crushers Instead of Cone Crushers Natural sand is a limited resource. In Sweden the total use of natural sand and gravel is around 20&nbsp;million tonnes per year and the goal is to halve the use of this resource in the near future. Most of this natural sand is used for concrete production, so the consequence of this goal is that more and more concrete must be produced with manufactured sand. The bedrock of Sweden consists mainly of granites and gneisses, rock types mainly composed of various amounts of quartz, feldspar and mica. Manufactured sand from these materials generally contains rather flaky and elongated grains, and there are few types of granite that can be used as manufactured sand in concrete without increasing the amount of cement by eight to ten per cent. A Vertical Shaft Impact crusher (VSI) is commonly used to improve the shape of coarse aggregate particles. Research has shown that it is even possible to improve the shape in aggregate fractions less than 1&nbsp;mm for some rock types. The aim of this project was to investigate which geological parameters control the improvement of manufactured sand when using VSI-crushers instead of the traditionally used cone crusher. In order to do this eight rock types of granitic composition were investigated. The selection of rock materials for the tests was based on grain size and mica content. A 4 - 8 mm fraction of each material was used for the tests. The characterisation of the shape of the material was performed using image analysis applied on microscopic images. The results showed that the VSI-crusher had improved the shape of all materials down to 0.036 mm, except for one rock sample. According to these results granites with low mica content and relatively high content of feldspars have the best prerequisites to produce manufactured sand for concrete with suitable geometric characteristics, and if these materials are crushed with a VSI crusher they almost show the same characteristics as natural sand.

Whereas many researchers and mine engineers have conducted tests using different types of grout, grout ratios, and physical modifications of the cable to determine cable bolt load characteristics, few studies have been conducted on cables fitted with internal instruments. Those studies that have been done have concentrated on cable behavior averaged over significant cable lengths. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Spokane, WA, are investigating the physical properties of cable bolts by replacing the conventional king wire with a modified king wire on which strain gauges have been installed . This paper documents test results on these modified cable bolts. Three tests were conducted at SRL on 1.83-m-long cables grouted into two 0.91-m-long pull-tube assemblies. Load along the cable was monitored with 20 strain gauges installed along the length of the cable. The instrumented cable bolt provided reproducible point measurements of cable load as opposed to load measurements averaged over significant cable lengths. Such point measurements can assist in interpreting the influence of cable confinement, grout quality, rock mass stiffness, and other factors. The instrumented cable bolt is a practical field and research tool because it can predict point loading along the cable and thereby allow interpolation of maximum possible loads on a cable.
