This paper introduces and defines the concept of a linkage between long-term planning parameters (?global assumptions?) and possible future world views as conceived in scenario planning. Scenario planning, the tool that is used to arrive at plausible future worldviews, is described in the context of the platinum industry. The interpretation of the scenarios into long-term planning parameters is made, followed by an illustration of how the long-term planning process has been adapted at Anglo Platinum to include the notion of uncertainty.

This report is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on exploration, development, mining methods, and costs at various open-pit mines in the United States. These reports have been prepared in cooperation with various mining companies. A similar program, conducted from 1928 to 1939, was generally conceded to have contributed to improving the efficiency of mining operations. The purpose of these reports is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technological information on mining methods and practices. This report describes exploration, development, equipment, and mining by open-pit methods of the remainder of an ore body that had been previously worked by underground methods. The Tripp pit of the Consolidated Coppermines Corp. is located at Kimberly, Nev., a small mining company town having an elevation of 7,250 feet, 9 miles by road west of Ely, Nev. (fig. 1). The pit extends over the area formerly mined by underground methods from the Morris and Brooks shafts.

In previous work the influence of the casting speed on the flow field and the shape of the solidification front in an industrial 0.82 x 0.25 x 0.8 m³ bronze caster had been investigated. Both numerical and experimental model represented 1:1 the real caster geometry. A comparison of the results of both numerical and experimental models for the flow during the casting process showed a good agreement in the qualitative velocity fields (flow direction and vortex formation). This work represents a parameter study of the numerical model with variations of the turbulence conditions at the inlet in order to clarify their influence on the flow field in the caster. In order to find the best boundary condition at the inlet, the numerical calculations for water have been compared with the measured flow fields in the water model. The new boundary conditions were then applied to the numerical model of the bronze casting process.

Ferroalloys like FeCr and FeMn are mostly produced in submerged electric arc furnaces. Typical for these processes is that the amount of slag is quite high. The role of slag for the process is thus very essential and specific chemical, physical and electrical properties are required. Slags in FeCr process are Al2O3-MgO-SiO2based with minor contents of CaO and CrOx. Slags in FeMn process are principally similar originating from silicate minerals but can have quite a large composition range depending on the manganese ore and its gangue minerals. Characteristic for FeMn process is that the slag is rich in manganese oxide up to above 30%. A common feature is that the ?ore oxides?, CrOx and MnOxin slag are not only divalent oxides but also containing some higher valent of Cr3+ and Mn3+, respectively. In FeMn production conditions the slag consists mainlyMn2+. This is a clear difference from CrOx containing slags in which both two and three valent coexists in slags in FeCr process conditions. Oxidation state of the slag depends on the ambient oxygen partial pressure and temperature in the examined process. Thermodynamics of slags in ferroalloys production are discussed in terms of phase diagrams, activities and oxidation state of chromium and manganese oxides. Further, slag properties influencing reduction kinetics and furnace operation i.e. viscosity and electrical resistivity are discussed. "Recently, Antamina has completed an expansion program of its operations which increased the thoughput in grinding from acapacity of 109 to 130 ktpd. After commissioning, throughput could be exceeded in grinding and downstream processes but primary crushing became a major bottleneck to the overall production process.With an objective to increase the processing capacity of the primary crusher system, a multidisciplinary team was formed with members of Mine, Concentrator and Maintenance departments, who analyzed the overall context of this process restriction. The main implementations developed were: automatic discharge systems of trucks, logic to count trucks and elaboration of a daily performance report. Following implementation of developed improvements, the numbers of discharged trucks to crusher were increased from 449 to 614 units per day. As a result, the expansion target of 130 ktpd was exceeded and processing capacity was increased from 109 ktpd to 145 ktpd. This improvement adds very significant economical value for Antamina.INTRODUCTIONAntamina is a copper-zinc mine located in the Peruvian Andes. Compañía Minera Antamina is owned by BHP Billiton (33.75%), Xstrata (33.75%), Teck Cominco (22.5%), and Mitsubishi (10%). The mine was commissioned in 2001 with a capital investment of US$2.3 billion, and had a nominal 77,000 ktpd mill capacity. Mining, milling, flotation, and tailings impoundment take place at the mine site, which sits at an altitude of 4,300 m above sea level. The deposit is a polymetallic skarn ore body with intrusive phases of quartz-monzonite porphyry into Cretaceous aged limestone. Copper is present mainly as chalcopyrite with a minor bornite component. Zinc is present as sphalerite. Molybdenum is present as molybdenite. Some lead, bismuth, and silver are associated with the sulphides. The deposit is currently classified into six main ore types [Dechert, 2006], grouped into two categories: copper and copper-zinc. The mill produces four concentrate types: copper, molybdenum, zinc, and lead-bismuth. Copper and zinc, concentrates are transported by pipeline down to the port of Huarmey. Molybdenum and lead-bismuth concentrates are bagged and trucked to port."

THE filter-press, which has done so much for the successful treatment of the sulpho-telluride ores of Kalgoorlie, has a serious rival in the vacuum process, and this paper is written with a view to arousing more interest in the cheaper working of the press, it being doubtful whether its efficiency in extraction can be improved upon.Before proceeding with the actual working of the press, it may be as well to make brief mention of the character of the ore treated at the Associated Northern Blocks, where these notes were compiled.A sample from several weeks' run was taken of the raw ore, with the following analysis...

The paper presents a general background to the subsidence research program being undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources and Development in New South Wales. The results of the studies undertaken over the last ten years are summarised. The differences between these results and those obtained by the National Coal Board are discussed. The results of a study carried out on the effect of total extraction beneath a freeway in the southern coalfields are discussed in some detail. The procedures developed for the construction of a 500 mm diameter natural gas pipeline crossing a number of collieries in the northern coalfields are also outlined. The future direction of the Department's subsidence research program is discussed.

Effects of High Pressure Grinding Rolls on Platinum-Bearing Ores and the Flotation Response as Compared to the Conventional Ball Mill Three major PGM ore types from the Bushveld Complex of South Africa: Merensky, UG2 and Platreef were comminuted with the use of the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The influence of the feed characteristics and the various operational and design features of the HPGR on energy consumption, throughput, mineral liberation and PGM flotation recovery were investigated. The test work variables included two feed top sizes of 12 mm and 6 mm, specific grinding forces ranging between 3 - 7.5N/ mm2 and zero gaps of 1.5 mm and 3 mm. The results show that the influence of the HPGR operational and design features on energy consumption, throughput, mineral liberation and PGM recovery are ore dependent. The size reduction-specific energy relationships show that the most energy efficient utilisation of the HPGR for Platreef ore was at the lower specific grinding force of 3N/mm2 and the zero gap at 3 mm. For Merensky and UG2 ore on the other hand, the most energy efficient operation was at the higher specific grinding force of 7.5N/mm2 and the zero gap of 1.5 mm. At a specific energy input of 3 kWh/t, reduction ratios (F50/P50) of 6.5, 3.8 and 10 were obtained for Merensky, UG2 and Platreef, respectively for feed top sizes of 12mm. Further application of the HPGR as a pregrinding stage to a ball mill showed a 25 - 30 per cent increase in throughput for Merensky and UG2 ore. Batch flotation tests performed on selected samples appear to indicate that ore comminuted with the ball mill had superior grades compared with that ground with the HPGR. However, Merensky and UG2 ore comminuted at different HPGR operating conditions showed distinctions in PGM recovery. Platreef on the other hand did not appear to show any differences. Therefore, this study highlights the significance of ore type and operating variables in HPGR applications with regards to energy efficiency, throughput and PGM recovery.

Detailed landform designs were completed for six (integrated) iron ore waste rock dumps at a Western Australian iron ore mine site to meet closure objectives and to optimise material movements for closure. The designs were based on specific physical and geochemical properties of waste material and the design was undertaken to enhance long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements, and therefore minimise closure cost. Construction of the re-shaped waste rock dumps have been completed. Following construction, surface material characteristics were found to deviate from those used in the design assessment. Materials present at surface following re-shaping were generally finer textured than those sampled for modelling. It is anticipated that the embankment slopes may experience increased rates of surface erosion compared to the rates predicted from modelling and used in design. The finer textured material is thought to be generated from exposing finer material that has migrated into the coarser matrix over time or that was not present in the sampled top surface of the landforms. This is due to armouring processes over time and this phenomenon is likely to recur following further wet seasons. The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps were subgrade banded iron formations (BIF) and chert, which are generally competent and geochemically inert. Some waste material was known to have an elevated risk of erosion but present in relatively small quantities. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert). The direction of the optic or "C" axis of a uniaxial metal crystal can be found with the metallurgical polarizing microscope by examining two planes of section on the crystal. Complete orientation of the crystal can be determined if a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section. Examination of Uniaxial Metals in Polarized Light-Rotation of a uniaxial crystal surface, properly prepared,' shows four extinction positions 90 deg apart, provided that the surface is not close to a basal section. One of these two extinction directions corresponds with the projection of the optic axis on the surface of section. This direction can be found if the 'sign of the rotationr2 for the metal is known. To find the direction of the optic axis, the crystal is rotated on the stage 45 deg from an extinction position. With a crystal of negative sign, to produce extinction the analyser must be rotated towards the optic axial direction and vice versa. All sections, other than basal, of a uniaxial crystal have the same sign of rotation and, since there is no change in sign with wave length, white light can be used for these measurements. U the sign of the rotation is not known the presumed direction of the optic axis can be determined assuming a positive sign. A third section cut normal to the presumed optic axis will show basal extinction if the assumption is correct. It is convenient to use the edge between the two planes of section as a fiducial direction common to both surfaces. The optic axis can be related to this direction. If the above measurements are repeated on the other plane of section and the angle between the two section planes measured, stereographic projection can be used to determine the orientation of the crystal optic axis. Determination of Complete Orientation—The complete orientation of a uniaxial crystal can be determined provided that a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section, and the twin law is known. This information circular, which describes the methods and costs of sinking a small underground shaft with steel supports at the Keystone mine of American Smelting and Refining Co., near Crested Butte, Colo., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on current shaft-sinking practices in various mining districts of the United States. Preparations for sinking a combined exploration, development, and production shaft from the lowest level of the Keystone mine began early in 1957. This vertical, three-compartment, 6-1/4-by 16-foot rectangular shaft was to be sunk in separate stages or lifts so as to correspond with the progress of an associated lateral exploration and development program. The first section of the shaft was collared and sunk to a depth of 209 feet between September 1957 and April 1958. Because of the depressed base-metal market, the mine was shut down as soon as the initial phase of the exploration and development program had been completed and before any deeper sinking could be attempted.

NATURE OF ORETHE Edna May ore consists mainly of clean quartz of a moderately hard and tough nature. The gold content is "free" and fairly coarse, so that a large percentage is recovered by amalgamation. The ore is practically free from metallic minerals.GENERAL OUTLINE OF PLANT AND TREATMENTThe ore, received from underground in trucks, is broken by a jaw breaker, then stamp-milled, follow~d by partial filie-grinding in pans. Mercury is used both in the mill boxes and pans. The pulp, on leaving the pans, passes over amalgamating tables and is then elevated by tailings pulp to cone classifiers and separated into a sand and slime product, each product receiving a separate cyanide treatment-sand by leaching in vats and slime by agitation and decantation in a "Trent" plant. Gold solutions from both sand and slime are precipitated together by zinc shavings in the usual type of precipitation boxes. Accumulated slime is trucked from the dam to a vortex mixer and from this point receives with the cement slime the same treatment.ORE BREAKING AND TRANSPORTThe ore is trucked from the brace of the shaft along an overhead line to the breaker station. This paper analyses the impact of the uncertainty associated with the input parameters in a mine planning optimization model. A real example was considered to aid in the building of a mathematical model that represents the coal production process with reference to the mining, processing, and marketing of coal. This model was optimized using the linear programming concept whereby the best solution was perturbed by the stochastic behaviuor of one of the main parameters involved in the production process. The analysis of the results obtained permitted an evaluation of the risk associated with the best solution due to the uncertainty in the input parameters.

The significance of a massive sandstone unit in the immediate roof to longwall support weighting is well known. If the unit lies in the main roof above the zone of caving, its influence becomes more difficult to calculate using traditional methods. Much of the reserves at Cyprus Plateau's new, multi-seam Willow Creek Mine are located in the A Seam. The massive Kenilworth Sandstone is typically situated 21.3 m (70 ft) above the A Seam in the main roof and is on average 14.6-m (48-ft) thick, ranging to 29.0-m (95-ft) thick. This paper describes the application of distinct-element modeling to determination of the appropriate yield capacity for supports at Willow Creek. The modeling was determined to be useful for understanding support loading mechanisms and as an aid to engineering judgment in selecting supports.

The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 krn NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity. The deposit is mostly overlain by younger Proterozoic sediments and later Cambrian age limestone cover and only a small proportion of the mineralisation crops out. Mineralisation has a subtle surface expression without a classic gossan profile, probably due to the low iron sulphide content of the ore. These factors contributed materially to the length of time between the first recognition of lead-zinc-silver mineralisation in the area by prospectors in the 1880s, to the discovery of the orebody by CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) in April 1990.   Small scale prospecting and mining continued in the area from the date of the first mining lease in 1887. Post 1950, the deposit area was also included within nine separate regional exploration titles prior to CRAE's title acquisition in 1987. CRAE's original exploration strategy was partly pragmatically and partly conceptually inspired, but the eventual discovery only partly conformed to the original conceptual model. The deposit was found higher in the stratigraphy than the original target position, with unexpectedly low total sulphide content relative to other known deposits.   The discovery soil anomaly was located by the CRAE's first regional orientation traverse line in the area, but was not drill tested for three years. The discovery sequence at Century has strong elements of persistence, technical competence and some luck. It demonstrates that even in well explored terrains (by conventional standards) the exploration story can never be said to be over. The foreshadowed development of an economic resource at Century will hopefully inspire continued commitment to 'brownfields' exploration by mining companies, and demonstrate to external regulators the importance of genuine multiple land use strategies and the need for continued access to land for exploration and mining purposes.

So many emergencies that crop up in mining necessitate a departure from ordinary methods that the writer has been led to illustrate a few of the examples that have come under his notice during a somewhat lengthy career; and as most of the methods illustrated are certainly outside the ordinary, it may be hoped that while to many they may convey little that is new, to the larger number some acceptable information may be gleaned whenever the occasion calls for it. Experience has shown that there can be no hard and fast rule in mine timbering that will fit the varying- necessities of different localities, and the engineer must divest his mind of all prejudices that his practice of any particular system or systems may have induced, and must direct his attention to the character of the local timber and its fitness or otherwise for the purpose he has in view. Fortunate indeed are the man and mine that can claim an abundance of good and cheap mining timber it simplifies, oftentimes, what would be, under unfavourable timber conditions, a difficult problem. In many parts of the States there is either none or at best a scrub if the latter, he has to either pigstye, balk, or bulkhead, if his ground will permit; if, not, and the necessary timber has to be imported, then some system of recovering his timber and using it over and over again may be possible. The results presented in this report deal with the elimination of explosion hazards of ether-oxygen mixtures by the addition of helium. The method is based upon the fact that every combustible gas, vapor, or dust will not burn or explode when the oxygen content of the mixture is reduced below certain definite values. These critical oxygen values are usually different for each combustible, varying with the percentage of the combustible present in the mixture and also with the inert gaseous material used to reduce the oxygen content of the mixture.
