During 1983, Ecuador's gross domestic product (GDP) decreased by a reported 3.3% in real terms, the second consecutive decline in the economy after more than a decade of growth generated mainly by petroleum export revenues. The slowdown was due, in part, to the effects of the world recession, lower foreign demand for oil, depressed world oil prices, and reduced demand and prices for Ecuador's traditional agricultural exports. Inflation accelerated to an estimated 55% annual rate. The sucre was devalued in March, for the second time in less than a 12-month period, by 27% after remaining unchanged during the previous decade. In addition, continuous adjustments were made every weekday, effectively devaluing the sucre another 30% by yearend. Ecuador's production of crude petroleum increased almost 12% in 1983 compared with that of 1982. Average daily production was 237,100 barrels per day (bbl/d), up from 211,300 bbl/d in 1982.

The alternating direction explicit procedure (ADEP) makes use of the boundary conditions to reduce multi-dimensional problems to a series of one-dimensional problems. The method, previously applied to reservoirs containing only an under-saturated oil, has now been extended to cover the case of natural gas reservoirs. l his involves solving a non-linear partial differential equation, application of the procedure is straightforward and no calcuIational problems were encountered. INTRODUCTION There has been a growing interest in formulating mathematical models of petroleum and natural gas reservoirs — models which permit the engineer to examine and evaluate the physical and economic consequences of various alternative production policies. The tremendous reduction in the cost of solving such models in recent years has made possible their use as an almost routine management tool. This reduction is the result not only of improved computer hardware but also of the development of more efficient mathematical techniques. The present paper is concerned with the application of a recently proposed numerical method (ADEP) to two-dimensional gas reservoirs. The semi-solid metal casting process results in a unique solidification path. The microstructural features that were identified during the characterization of the as-cast microstructure, were used as evidence of the process history in order to determine the solidification path followed during the evolution of the microstructure. The morphology of the grains was characterized using SEM and the extent and distribution of the elemental segregation within the grain structure was analysed using EDS. In responding to mine fires and explosions, accurate and timely analysis of the mine atmosphere is critical in making decisions regarding firefighting, mine rescue and mine recovery operations. For many years instantaneous analyses were available to rescue workers using handheld or portable gas detection equipment, including infrared, electrochemical, or catalytic measuring devices for a limited number of specific gases such as oxygen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Instantaneous sensing technology is not available for all gases, such as nitrogen and hydrocarbons, found in a mine fire atmosphere and cross-sensitivity can be a problem with this technology. For these reasons, air samples are collected for injection into a gas chromatograph for a complete and accurate analysis for all gases including oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, as well as ?fire gases? such as hydrogen, ethylene, ethane, and acetylene. This method requires additional time for transporting the samples to the laboratory near the mine, as well as an instrument operator to inject the samples for analysis. The use of a portable micro gas chromatograph with a continuous and automatic injection system has been implemented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during mine recovery operations. The device directly samples the mine atmosphere from an underground location every twelve minutes and automatically analyzes the samples for all of the mine fire gases. The portable unit utilizes micro technology and the operating software has been modified to perform the calculation of sample results in and Excel® spreadsheet without user interaction. This paper describes the micro gas chromatograph system and its use at a recent mine recovery operation. The automated remote operation of the micro gas chromatograph has been shown to be a good alternative to infrared and electrochemical sensors used for mine atmosphere analysis.

Strata behavior and support performance were evaluated in a longwall tailgate test area at the Eagle Nest Mine near Van, WV. The mine operates in the Eagle coalbed which ranges in height from 4 to 6 ft (1.2 to 1.8 m) on the mine property. Rugged topography results in rapid changes in overburden which ranges from 200 to 1200 ft (61 to 366 m). The immediate roof at this mine transitions from sandstone to shale. In some areas the sandstone appears to be massive while in many locations it is highly laminated, fossilized, and interspersed with coal streaks. Horizontal stress levels appear to be sufficient to create instabilities in the roof in some locations, especially where the roof is thinly laminated. Traditionally, hardwood cribs have been used at the mine to provide secondary support for longwall tailgates; Strata Products' Hercules cribs are installed on 8 ft (2.4 m) centers staggered left and right in the tailgate entry. In a 250 ft (75 m) tailgate test area, however, cable bolts were installed in lieu of cribs. The bolts were 12 ft (3.6 m) long tensionable cables anchored with 5 ft (1.5 m) of resin. Four cables were installed across the entry and rows were spaced on 6 ft (1.8 m) centers. Primary roof support was maintained in the vicinity of the test area using 42 in (1.1 m), grade 60, No. 6 (19 mm diameter) resin bolts installed on 4 ft (1.2 m) centers through T-2 channels. The cable test area was located under a stream valley in an area of relatively shallow overburden. Strata instabilities consistently had been associated with the stream valley in both the Eagle and the overlying Powellton coalbeds. In an effort to further expose the cables to the most difficult stress conditions available at the time of the test, the specific site chosen was directly beneath a barrier pillar remaining in the upper Powellton mine (approximately 150 ft (45 m) of interburden separates the two coalbeds).

Sheeted vein gold deposits are characterised by multiple subparallel veins and often free milling gold. Variability in gold grade and recovery parameters are enhanced by poorly designed sampling and test work protocols. Poor quality samples generally equate to an enhanced nugget effect. A sample can be described as being representative when it results in acceptable levels of bias and precision. Total sampling variability can be quantified by the relative sampling variance, which measures the total empirical sampling variance influenced by the heterogeneity of the lot being sampled under the current sampling / test work protocol. Effort should be made to minimise the relative sampling variance through Theory of Sampling (TOS) and quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) application. This contribution reports on a case study that exemplifies how high-quality grade and recovery data can be gained from a well-designed and planned drilling, sampling and test work program, followed by bulk sampling. Results across historical resource drilling, geometallurgical drilling, laboratory assay / test work, geometallurgical modelling and a bulk sampling/pilot processing study are reconciled. Some 50 miles of tunnel have been driven in the Snowy Mountains Area since tunnelling commenced in 1951. Hates have improved progressively due to the know-how of American supervision and use of large matched equipment of modern design.The work has been carried out by contractors, working almost exclusively under schedule of rates contracts. The Authority has maintained active research into tunnelling problems, especially that of support, and this has resulted in considerable economies and improved rates of progress. The contractors also have sought economies both by management and equipment techniques. Ammonium nitrate came into favour as an explosive essentially because of its lower cost, and handling techniques have improved progressively. Rock conditions preclude use of the "Mole" type equipment in its present stage of development, but one contractor introduced the "sliding floor" and this could exert a great influence on future tunnelling methods.Examination of tunnels that have been in service for some time confirmed the quality of the work and endorsed the policy of continued research and development.GENEHALThe Snowy Mountains Scheme provides for the diversion of the Snowy and Eucumbene waters through two transmountain tunnels to the western river systems. This study investigates the use of a horizontally- baffled column (7.6 cm inside diameter by 344.2 cm high) to reduce the ash content of a high ash bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feedrate, reagent dosage, and feed quality, and to compare its performance with a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation will be reviewed and discussed.

Near-field blast vibration response of restrained pipelines either buried or exposed was studied during rock excavations at sensitive locations for Stage-II (4x500 MW) commissioning work in a super thermal powerplant of the National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. (NTPC) of India. The existing running plant of capacity 1000 MW has many important installations including pipelines of varying diameters. These pipelines were very close to the blasting locations (mostly within 12m). Blast optimization and consequent monitoring of vibrations were carried out simultaneously for more than 250 experimental blasts conducted by the authors. This paper emphasized, particularly, on the safety of pipelines and their responses due to repeated blasting impacts. A few guidelines supported by theoretical derivations are provided for futuristic research.

The Tertiary gold deposits of the Hauraki area are predominantly epithermal vein types containing mineral assemblages of quartz, calcite, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, acanthite and native gold (electrum). Sulphosalt, telluride (eg hessite), seleniferous sulphide and selenide minerals are important locally. Studies of wall rock alteration mineralogy, fluid inclusions in gangue minerals, and sulphur isotopes of sulphide minerals indicate that the ore forming fluids had the following parameters: pH, near neutral at depth but acidic near surface; temperature, predominantly 320 - 270¦C for base metal dominated assemblages, 280 - 200¦C for precious metal dominated assemblages and generally below 200¦C for late stage barite; apparent salinity, six to zero equivalent weight per cent NaCl; and CO2 concentration, generally around one mole per cent CO2. There is fluid inclusion evidence for boiling during mineralisation in some deposits. Moderate values off S2 and FO2 are indicated for base metal and mixed base metal û precious metal assemblages of most deposits by the predominance of pyrite + chalcopyrite over other iron-bearing phases; primary bornite is absent, whereas pyrrhotite, hematite and magnetite rarely occur in the veins. The largest gold û silver deposits formed from solutions in which the sulphur species in solution were predominantly reduced. Near surface environments and some deep, predominantly base metal, deposits were formed from solutions with approximately equal concentrations of oxidised and reduced sulphur species.

"The Aurora North mine has been operating for more than ten years, and is the source of over half of Syncrude’s bitumen production. The slurry systems at Aurora experience high rates of wear, and mission lengths on current slurry pumps are nominally 1500-2000 hours. Recent work has enabled a better understanding of the significant adverse effect of large particle impingement damage to impeller vane leading edges - which is the known life determining issue for Aurora hydrotransport pumps. A new pump design has been developed with a larger diameter impeller and increased vane lengths, and is expected to triple Aurora’s mission length for hydrotransport pumps.INTRODUCTIONSlurry Pumps are Critical Equipment at SyncrudeSlurry pumps are a critical component in Syncrude’s operations. In a typical Aurora application, each pump stage helps move over 8000 dry tonnes per hour of oil sand, plus an equal volume of process water that has been added to create the slurry. The average impeller life in oil sand hydrotransport service at Aurora has been nominally 1500-2000 hours, or 12-16 million tonnes of oil sand pumped. Generally, the slurry pump application at Aurora has proven very difficult to improve due to the unique combination of high sand abrasivity, 125 mm (5”) large particle top size (lumps), and high flow rate relative to basic pump size; a factor that results in higher than optimal impeller vane speeds for the service conditions.PROJECT BASISSlurry Pumps are the Reliability Bottleneck at AuroraSlurry pumps are currently the shortest-lived components that determine the overall system run length at Aurora, in Hydrotransport, Extraction and Tailings. Vibrating screens and piping had been previous bottlenecks, but their reliability has been improved through upgrades in equipment design and wear materials. The removal of sulfur from steel has been studied by many investigators, but the quantitative relationships between the factors involved have not been determined. This is undoubtedly due to the number of variables encountered in practice, an attempt to study any one reaction or relation being affected by other reactions the relative importance of which cannot be estimated. The factors that affect the extent of removal of sulfur in the basic open-hearth process are generally considered to be: 1. Basicity of the slag: (a) Iron oxides in the slag; (b) carbon in the metal or carbide in the slag; (c) temperature. These factors affect the reactions: FeS + CaO = CaS + FeO FeS + CaO + C = CaS + CO + Fe. 2. Amount of sulfur in the gas. 3. Amount of manganese in the metal. The factors which affect the rate of removal of sulfur include, in addition to these: 4. Fluidity of the slag: (a) Normal changes in fluidity with temperature; (b) changes in fluidity because of the addition of special reagents such as fluorspar. 5. Agitation of the bath. Within the past two years, two papers have been presented dealing with the influence of sulfur in the gas on slag and metal. Achieving substantial reductions in the exposure of underground miners to diesel particulate matter in a number of metal and nonmetal mines in the U.S. depends on the ability of the industry to widely implement advanced diesel emissions control technologies, primarily diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems. Recent field studies showed that diesel particulate filter systems with Cordierite and silicon carbide ceramic filter elements are capable of reducing concentrations of diesel particulate matter and elemental carbon by more than 70 and 90 percent, respectively. But those studies and several other attempts to implement DPF systems in underground mines revealed a number of relatively unique technical and operational challenges that are limiting industry-wide implementation of this technology. This paper provides detailed analysis of some of those challenges and short overviews of several projects launched by NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in an attempt to provide the underground mining industry with more adequate DPF systems. These systems employ advanced technologies to overcome the most pronounced challenge, the regeneration of DPF elements installed on mining engines that generate relatively low exhaust temperature. This paper presents essential findings obtained through a long-term evaluation of DPF system with diesel fuel burner technology installed on a heavy-duty load-haul dump vehicle in an underground metal mine. In addition, the essential results of the laboratory evaluation of a popular on-highway DPF system which was adapted and optimized for underground mining applications will be summarized in this paper.

Close-in blasting occurs every time the use o f explosives for excavation or demolition requires the surpassing of the commonly accepted cosmetic damage criteriain order to arrive at reasonable and practical explosive weights per delay. One of the many effective blast design procedures consists in establishing a reasonable charge weight per delay with respect to scale, geometry, costs, requirements and constraints of the project. Once this reasonable charge weight per delay is determined, it’s environmental effects have to be estimated with respect to the surroundings.

Apparatus for maintaining constant — but adjustable — pulp level and rate of froth removal are described. The results of preliminary experiments into the effect of scraping speed on the rate of solid and liquid recovery with a semi-batch system are presented. Glass spheres restricted to a narrow size range is the solid under investigation. Graphical methods for estimating the mass of recoverable material and the zero error are given. The semi-batch procedure1 is extensively used in laboratory flotation testing, though the method is subject to variability of moderate severity. Raffinot2 concluded from a statistical study of the difference between replicate tests, that the ptincipal source of errot was the test itself and not sampling or chemical analysis. These differences can be ascribed principally to changes in pulp volume and reagent concentration, and uncontrolled rate and depth of scraping. Semi-batch testing has been criticized1 on these grounds as a means of investigating flotation kinetics. This paper discusses and describes modifications to laboratory flotation equipment which reduce the number of manual operations and lead to improved control. Kinetic studies were the primary reason for developing the apparatus described. It should, however be a useful aid in normal flotation testing. Some preliminary results of experiments are presented.

The utilization of silica particles originated in rice husks as reinforcements of magnesium composites was discussed. By using the solid state reaction of rice husk silica particles with magnesium powder, P/M magnesium based composites dispersed with the magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) and magnesium oxide (MgO) were fabricated. High-purity silica particles were originated from rice husks, one of the major agricultural wastes, via the citric acid leaching treatment and combustion in air. The effects of the silica particle characteristics such as size, crystalline and porous structures, on the reactivity of silica and magnesium to synthesize Mg2Si intermetallic were discussed. Amorphous silica was more useful for this reaction than crystalline one. The reactivity of rice husk silica was superior to that of the conventional mineral silica particles because of not only its amorphous structure but the larger specific surface area due to their pore structures. In the case of the green compact of the mixture of the rice husk silica and Mg powder, the silica particle size was not effective on the reactivity because the coarse particles were fractured into fine ones by cold compaction. The distribution of Mg2Si intermetallics of magnesium powder composites consolidated by SPS process was investigated by XRD and SEM-EDS analysis. Their mechanical and physical properties were also evaluated in detail.

The Zagros long tunnel is one of the main components of Sirvan water transfer project in western Iran. It is approximately 48 km in length and consisted of two lots. The second 26 km lot of this tunnel is under construction by a 6.73 m diameter double shield (DS) TBM. The tunnel passes through several formations with wide range rock mass qualities. During the tunnel alignment, changes in rock quality were highly frequent from poor to very good. The encountered geological conditions required TBM operation to change frequently from hard rock to soft, dry to flowing, sticky to nonsticky ground (and vice versa), more often than expected. In the course of tunneling, the machine has encountered nearly many adverse geologic conditions. The most important problems have been sudden high volume water inflow into the tunnel, sticky ground, and gas seepage, all of which resulted in reduced TBM advance rates. This study will high-light two difficult ground conditions including large water ingress and sticky ground and also the related problems encountered by the TBM along 8 km of excavated tunnel. In sticky grounds, cleaning of the clogged cutter head caused many delays and contributed to additional downtime. Application of some operational modifications, including decreased TBM thrust showed satisfactory results in such cases. While reduced thrust resulted in reduced penetration rate, but the overall TBM advance was greatly improved by the increase utilization rate and elimination of down time related to cleaning of the head. To cope with high water inflow, application of preventive measures such as pre-grouting has proved to be a more efficientsolution. The sealing of ground water inflow also decreased seepage of dangerous H2S gas and other chemicals such as hydrocarbons accompanying the groundwater.

Use of vehicles with electric drive, which could reduce our oil dependence, will depend on lithium-ion batteries. But is there enough lithium? Will we need to import it from a new cartel? Are there other materials with supply constraints? We project the maximum demand for lithium and other materials if electric-drive vehicles expanded their market share rapidly, estimating material demand per vehicle for four battery chemistries. Total demand for the United States is based on market shares from an Argonne scenario that reflects high demand for electric-drive vehicles, and total demand for the rest of the world is based on a similar International Energy Agency scenario. Total material demand is then compared to estimates of production and reserves, and the quantity that could be recovered by recycling, to evaluate the adequacy of supply. We also identify producing countries to examine potential dependencies on unstable regions or future cartels.
