The purpose of this investigation was to develop and improve mining methods for mining thin coal beds, to increase productivity, and to increase the recovery of coal. German coal planers and a modified longwall system of mining were introduced into American mines and are bringing about increased productivity and better recovery as compared with the conventional methods displaced. Since the first installation, 4 additional planers have been purchased by coal companies and over 1-1/2 mil¬lion tons of coal has been mined by them, using the modified longwall mining method. INTRODUCTION Except from 1932 to 1934, the growth of mechanical loading in underground bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States has increased steadily. The amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground mines has increased from 0.3 percent in 1923 to 79.6 percent of the total underground production in 1953.3/ The use of new and improved mining machines and auxiliary equipment, together with new techniques in mining methods, usually has resulted in increased productivity.

For worker safety, mining companies are required to stop production and inspect hoist ropes. Visual inspection is generally done daily and EM inspection occurs every three to four months. During visual inspection, rope speed is generally reduced so an inspector can look for problems. In EM testing the LMA and LF traces are printed on a paper strip chart and a skilled operator interprets these traces. Mining companies only find large defects during visual inspection and are sometimes concerned about the content of EM trace information. This paper will present research outcomes that show how muck can be hoisted while performing a complete visual rope inspection at full speed. Other research results will show that digital signal processing can increase the amount of information available to the EM rope inspector. The research was funded by Inco, C-CORE, three AMIRA International sponsors and six sponsors from the Canadian Deep Mining Research Consortium (DMRC). The research will be commercialised in 2005.

The problem of converting our raw coal, and especially those coals that are not suited for long storage, in other words soft, into a fuel which would be at once clean; of a high B. t, u. content and low ash, is one that has occupied the minds of many able chemical engineers and hydrocarbon technologists during the past few years. Low temperature carbonization is the present outcome of this line of research, and many methods have been evolved of recent years to turn out a serviceable, useful fuel, and at the same time, save the by-products. As most of the research and data within my experience and knowledge pertains to lignite or sub-bituminous coals, I will confine my remarks to coals of that character and grade: I might say that Colorado coals, commonly called lignite, are not in reality true lignite, but are sub-bituminous, although I have in my possession an analysis of a Colorado coal which shows a moisture of 17 per cent, volatile 31.5 per cent, fixed carbon 28.8 per cent, and an ash of 22.7 per cent, and B. t. u. less than 8,000. Even this, though useless for domestic or indeed industrial purposes, could not be classified as true lignite. However, for the purposes of this paper I will refer to these coals as lignite. Two thousand pounds, or one ton, of raw lignite carries about 20 per cent moisture. This, of course, varies in some coals, but is, I believe, a fair average. For carbonization purposes this is usually dried to a 5 per cent moisture, therefore leaving but 1,700 pounds of coal to be placed in the retort. From present knowledge, and with the average process of carbonization, 70 per cent of this coal will come out carbonized, or 1,190 pounds, to which is added about 10 per cent pitch, which is fried out as the coal passes through the retort, and which is used as a binder, making a total of 1,360 pounds of coke or carbonized coal. This is usually in appearance a dark colored, rather porous coke of about the size of pea coal. It burns without smoke and have a very high B. t. u. content. According to most authorities on this subject, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur and ash constitute the only elements on which carbonization value of a coal depends, and of these hydrogen is the most important. It is claimed the value of a coal for carbonization purposes may be roughly surmised from the hydrogen content. If this is promising, that is, showing an available hydrogen content of from 3 to 5 per cent, the coal should be given a careful ultimate analysis. Should the seam, as often happens in lignite coals, show varying bands of coal of different structure or appearance, samples should be taken from each band as well as a gross sample taken down the face of the seam in the usual way. This is in order to determine what part of the seam is most promising for by-product processes. A seam showing a high nitrogen content adds to the attractiveness of the coal in carbonizing as; if available nitrogen is 2 per cent or better, it should give a very high ammonia yield.

Increasing use has been made of engineer ing geology and hydrogeology in the development of the infrastructure for mining projects. The Geological Survey of the Department of Mines, the Department of Main Roads, the Irrigation and Water Supply Commission and private consulting organisations and mining companies, employ spec- ialist staff to carry out engineering geological and/or hydrogeological investigations. Such in- vestigations have been of assistance in recent mining developments in northern Queensland, in- cluding those in the Cloncurry - Mount lsa, Weipa, Greenvale and northern Borten Basin areas.

Some high sulfur and arsenic-bearing gold concentrate has a gold leaching rate less than 80% by oxidation roasting-pickling-cyanidation process. The characteristics and intensification of gold leaching were studied systemically. By combining chemical composition and phase analysis, the low gold leaching rate was found to lie in the capsulation of gold by iron-containing phases including iron oxides, arsenopyrite and pyrite. 96.66% of gold in the industrial leaching residue was capsulated and 95.88% of the capsulated turned out to be in the iron-containing phases. The results of laboratory pickling-cyanidation experiments on the calcine and industrial leaching residue presented further demonstration for the fact that gold capsulated in the iron-containing phases was hard to be leached. However, the gold cyanide leaching rate of calcine could be raised over 95% by a reduction roasting-pickling pretreatment which played such a significant role in exposing the capsulated gold that gold leaching was intensified remarkably.

Lead has the ability to collect and carry valuable metals such as copper, bismuth, antimony, tin and precious metals for their downstream recovery. Therefore, lead metallurgy is key for the raw material supply that our society demands. Lead smelters, excluding lead-acid battery recyclers, tend to process more complex primary and secondary raw materials, which are mostly processed via the pyrometallurgy route. Accordingly, understanding the slag system of these metallurgical processes is key for the efficient industrial operation and recovery of minor elements. Glencore Nordenham is an integrated lead and zinc smelter in northern Germany with a production of 92 000 t of lead and 164 700 t of zinc in 2022. The lead production line processes complex leadbearing raw materials through the direct smelting process. Firstly, the feed mix is smelted in a Top Submerged Lance (TSL – Ausmelt®) furnace, where a lead bullion containing minor metals and a lead-rich slag are produced. Then, the lead-rich slag from the TSL is tapped (via launder) into a Side- Blown Furnace (SBF), where lead oxide is reduced to produce lead bullion (with minor elements) and discard slag. The lead bullion from both stages is refined to produce lead (>99.9 per cent) and recover the minor elements (Cu, Ag, Au, Sb, Te, Bi etc). This paper reflects the experience of operating the SBF after the first five years of operation and describes its ‘PbO-SiO2-FeOx-CaO-ZnO’ slag system. Firstly, the slag system, the furnace operating region and the potential solid phases present are discussed from a theoretical point of view. This theoretical study has been performed using FactSage™ 8.2 and the database developed by the Pyrosearch group at the University of Queensland, Australia (UQPY). Then, the FactSage™ simulations are compared with industrial slag measurements. Finally, some examples on how the slag knowledge gained at Glencore Nordenham can help the industrial operation of the SBF are discussed.

This paper deals with the selection and design of a belt conveyor handling steam coal between a mine and a barge loading terminal, and extending for some 5 ¼ miles over some of the most rugged terrain in the state of West Virginia, U.S.A. After a thorough analysis by consulting engineers and the owner's engineers, a single-flight cablebelt conveyor was chosen as representing the alternative of greatest reliability and lowest over-all cost. The value analysis and design features of the system are covered in this paper along with an updated report on the performance of the system since its start-up in the spring of 1969.

The Mining Annual Report (RAL) is an obligation for every current owner of a brazilian mining process which is already undergoing extraction. This document is basically composed by the company’s annual book balance, where is possible to educe informations that allow to evaluate the mineral market behavior. This research gathered filtered data linked with RAL production and technical responsability between 2010 and 2017, gotten by the Information Access Law, without the real CNPJ of each company, in order to preserve their identity. The results allow to quantify the Brazilian mining production during the period, illustrating that approximately 46% of the companies can be classified as micro, 30% as small, 20% as medium and 4% as large mining companies. It was observed that the micros concentrate the most part of technical responsibles who sign for more than three mines.

AT the Sladen-Malartic mine, a number of orebodies have been mined, some by shrinkage and others by open sub-level scopes, from which the ore is handled either through a grizzly system or by mechanical loaders. This paper deals with the comparative costs and relative merits of the two handling arrangements. The facts brought out in this comparison have a bearing on the selection of a proper handling method. The mine is in Fourniere township, northwestern Quebec, about forty miles east of the town of Rouyn. It is served by the Rouyn-Senneterre branch of the Canadian National railways. Two vertical three-compartment shafts give access to the present workings. No. 1 shaft, at which the plant is centralized, is the main hoisting shaft, with five levels to 950 feet. No. 2 shaft, 2,400 feet east of No. 1, is under development, with four levels to 725 feet. At the main shaft, the ore is hand-trammed in 1 1/2 tons cars from the scopes to the stations o:i each level and hoisted in cages to surface at a rope speed of 900 feet per minute. Air-operated tipples are used to dump the ore through grizzlies of 14-inch openings into a surface bin of 150 tons capacity. The ore hoisted at No. 2 shaft is trucked from the headframe bin to the mill. Milling commenced in January, 1938, ar a daily rate of 250 tons. Within two months this rate was increased to the unit's maximum capacity of 325 tons. A second unit to treat a further 325 tons daily was installed in April, 1939. The orebodies mined at No. 1 shaft are parts of a silicified zone at the contact between syenite porphyry and greywacke. The zone is ten co sixty feet wide, strikes easterly, and dips to the south at 55 to 85 degrees. The hanging-wall of the zone is marked, though not precisely, by a strong gouge fault. Locally, the boundary of silicification may be as much as twenty feet either above or below the fault, but for practical mining purposes the fault is the hanging-wall of the ore-zone. The footwall roughly parallels the fault, but as an assay wall it is usually irregular in detail. The ore is dense and hard, a siliceous replacement of both porphyry and greywacke, mineralized with fine disseminated pyrite.

Lixiviant regeneration is by definition a precondition for any hydrometallurgical process. In chloride hydrometallurgy either HCl or Cl2 has to be regenerated in order to establish an economically viable metallurgical process. One such regeneration process is widely used with steel pickling where HC1 is regenerated through the thermal decomposition of ferrous chloride in either spray roasters or fluid bed pyrohydrolyzers. This standard HC1 regeneration process deserves to be considered as a potential separation process, since thermodynamic calculations show that a fluid bed pyrohydrolyzer can function as a ferrous-nonferrous separator. Several nonferrous,metals such as zinc, lead and cadmium can be volatilized as a chloride under ferrous chloride pyrohydrolysis conditions. If such a nonferrous metal volatilization could be achieved in the case of slurry feeding of "contaminated" iron oxides, then this would increase the Fe/H2O ratio of the (process) feed and thus save on fuel per ton of iron, while yielding a marketable iron oxide product. Previous test work on synthetic materials revealed that the near-complete separation of zinc, lead and cadmium from iron oxide was possible in a pyrohydrolytic atmosphere, even if zinc was present as zinc ferrite (more than 99.5%). This investigation, which was carried out in a tube furnace at 1100 K has now been extended to treat synthetic zinc minerals and also franklinite ore. For the latter, it was found that 85% zinc volatilization could be achieved in 4 hours at 1300 K. It is postulated that complete zinc volatilization could not be attained due to the formation and/or presence of gahnite and hardystonite, which might be stable in HCl/H2O atmospheres at 1100 K. The effect of adding small amounts of calcium chloride to react with gahnite and hardystonite to give zinc chloride and both calcium aluminates and silicates is being discussed. Test work on slurry feeding of this complex ore in a recently constructed 4-inch diameter fluid bed pilot unit has been planned for the near future.

"The complexity of the mining and metallurgical operations of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, has made it necessary to use computer-assisted planning techniques in order to maximize copper production and marginal contribution to profit. The most successful of the Group Production Scheduling systems utilized linear programming to optimize the concentrate routing only. This third-generation system was commissioned in March, 1968.It bad become necessary by March, 1970, to expand the long-term planning activities and to take into account new mines and new concentrate treatment schemes. Technical difficulties and manpower limitations made it impossible to expand the third-generation system, and it was decided to construct a new Group Production Scheduling system using only linear programming.The plant models in the new fourth-generation system are based on data available from the monthly reports of the metallurgical plants. The models consist of mass balances and empirical relationships. Matrix coefficient assignment and management reports are produced using a Report Generator Language designed for linear programming data files. The development of this system is an example of a user application of a system package."

J.R. Hillebrand From the abstract, "A realistic ore deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework." Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and south-western Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in Fig. 1. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Guleman, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran. Reply by J.C. Wynn Mr. Hillebrand raises two issues that deserve a serious response. One issue is basically subjective and the other is ultimately political. First, the question of where (and how many) podiform chromite deposits are found in the idealized ophiolite section of Dickey (1975). The Dickey model is still perhaps somewhat controversial (Panayoutou, 1980), but our experience in the Josephine ophiolite of northern California (Wynn, 1980; and Albers, 1983) shows that the model works well there. Virtually all the chromite is found in dunite lenses in the tectonite peridotite (harzburgite). Since there are few complete ophiolites exposed in the world, the model will probably never satisfy everyone. The degree of acceptance is a function of any individual's subjective experience. Second, it is well known that stratiform chromite contributes more than 95% of the chromite reserves presently known in the world, and it could be reasonably argued that there is no point in exploring for or exploiting podiform deposits further. The title of the paper, however, was in part 'strategic minerals geophysical research'; chromite is considered a strategic and critical mineral of the US and many other industrialized nations. Stratiform deposits in South Africa and Zimbabwe account for most of the chromite reserves in the world. Unfortunately, experience in modern times with substantial price fluctuations and even resource cartels dictates the wisdom of identifying and maintaining a national chromite reserve, irrespective of the cost. An improved exploration methodology is an essential element in this strategic objective. La Mine Louvicourt est une mine hautement mécanisée exploitant un gisement polymétallique avec des chantiers transversaux minés et remblayés selon une séquence primaire-secondaire. Dans certaines parties du gisement, il n'y avait qu'un accès à la coupe inférieure, car il n'était pas rentable d'avoir aussi un accès par coupe supérieure. Le minerai situé au-dessus des chantiers avec trous ascendants était considéré comme ressource non rentable par minage mécanisé. L'option de miner ces ressources avec des sous-niveaux avec accès par monterie alimak et forage long-trous de petit diamètre fût donc étudiée et démontra une rentabilité intéressante, particulièrement en considérant les tonnes ainsi minées comme tonnage supplémentaire au tonnage planifié. Dans ces chantiers, les détonateurs électroniques ont été très utiles et de plus, les coûts d'explosifs ont étés réduits considérablement par l'utilisation d'émulsion pompée en vrac.

Heap leaching with thiosulfate is only used in one location for the treatment of a refractory preg-robbing gold ore initially pre-treated with bio-oxidation. The chemistry of thiosulfate leaching is complex. Further work is required to develop a better control of the system. A mild refractory gold ore containing pyrite and chalcopyrite was used in this study to investigate the use of thiosulfate as an alternative heap leaching technology. Preliminary bottle rolls tests indicated that similar gold extraction was obtained with cyanide and thiosulfate. In the column leach test, effects of thiosulfate, copper and ammonia concentrations, and their ratio on both gold extraction and reagent consumption, were assessed. The range of reagent concentration were: 0.1 - 1.0M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.03 - 0.10M CuSO4*5H2O, 1.0 - 6.0M NH4OH. The solid-liquid ratio was in the range of 0.83:1 to 5: 1. Best results showed that 72% of gold was extracted in 50 days with 0.3M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.05M CuSO4*5H2O and 6M NH4OH or a combination of 1.0M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.03M CuSO4*5H2O and 3M NH4OH. The reagent consumption at solid/liquid ratio of 3:1 was 37 - 48.6 kg/t (NH4)2S2O3 and 0 - 0.62 kg/t CuSO4*5H2O. The results of thiosulfate leaching were also compared with cyanide leaching.

Coal mining today is confronted with numerous problems, all of which affect in some way the ability of the operator to produce profitably. The major endeavor, therefore, is a quest for cost lowering techniques. Complete belt haulage from shuttle car to river barge appeared to be a step in such a direction. A deep look into all aspects proved this to be more involved than just the installation of such a belt line. With this paper, we will attempt to present to you the problems and requirements of design and installation of an all-belt haulage system, believed to be the longest underground belt installation in the world at this time. The first and most important item is the justification of an all-belt haulage system. The following is a brief history of the coal property and the facts affecting our decision.

The Underground Injection Control program was promulgated in 1981 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Placement of mine waste backfill underground is considered underground injection under the provisions of this program. A major issue is whether mine waste that is regulated as a contaminant source on the surface should be disposed of underground. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to investigate the impacts of mine waste sandfill on the quality of ground water. Analyses of water samples collected before and after contact with sandfill in a 10-year-old stope, as well as samples of the sandfill itself, were used to ascertain the influence of the sandfill after mine closure and subsequent flooding. Computer models supported the hypothesis that oxidation of pyrite by oxygen, accompanied by dissolution of carbonates, was the predominant reaction controlling the quality of the water being discharged from the stope. Concentrations of metals released as a result of acid production remained near or below detection limits. Metals release after mine flooding is expected to remain low as a result of the buffering by the sandfill and the reduced rate of oxidation.

OelSEN and Maetz1 detected some 20 years ago the existence of a miscibility gap in iron oxide-CaO-P2O5 slags melted in iron crucibles at about 1400°C. Because of the importance of this system for the dephos-phorization of steel in the basic Bessemer process, equilibria between liquid iron and selected iron oxide-CaO-P2Q slags have been measured since by numerous investigators.2-5 When in equilibrium with metallic iron, the iron oxide of the slag is present mainly as FeO. In connection with oxygen-blowing steelmaking processes, it is useful to know the phase relations in the slag system at higher oxygen pressure, when major parts of the iron oxide are present as Fe2O3. This problem was investigated by Turkdogan and Bills7 by equilibrating the oxide mixtures contained in platinum crucibles with CO2-CO mixtures at 1550°C. It was found that increasing the Fe2O3 content decreases the composition range of the miscibility gap strongly so that the miscibility gap has almost disappeared at pco2/pco = 75. This result was refuted by the careful work of Olette et a1.,''' who equilibrated their slags with controlled Ha-H2-Ar gas mixtures. Their equilibrium measurements, at 1600°C and at oxygen pressures of 5 x 10"* and 10"5 atm, showed that the oxidation state of the iron has almost no influence on the formation of the miscibility gap. The present experiments were undertaken to check the previous results of Turkdogan and Bills. The experiments were performed at 1625°C in the strongly oxidizing atmosphere of air (PO2 = 0.20 atm) for which no experimental data are available. About 10 g of slag were melted in platinum crucibles and held at constant temperature for 1 hr. After equilibration, the crucible was rapidly pulled out of the furnace and cooled in air. The platinum crucible was removed from the sample. The two slag layers were carefully separated with a small diamond disc, and the surface of the top layer, which may have changed its oxidation state during cooling, was removed. The slags were crushed and analyzed chemically for CaO, P2O5, Fe2+, and Fetotal. The starting mixtures were prepared by sintering the desired amounts of reagent-grade 2CaO . P2O5 - H2O, CaCO3, and Fe2O3. Sintering and subsequent crushing were done three times to ensure homogenization. Molybdenum wire resistance heating was used. The furnace was provided with a recrystallized alumina reaction tube which was left open to air at the top. The temperature was controlled electronically. The reported temperature was measured with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple and is estimated to be accurate within +5°C. The composition of the equilibrated melts is given in Table I. For the graphical illustration of these quaternary slags the type of projection suggested by Trömel and Fritze10 was used. In this representation, Fig. 1, the composition point of a mixture within the tetrahedron Fe2O3-CaO-P2O5-FeO is projected into the Fe2O3-CaO-P2O5, triangle (triangle I) so that the direction of projection is parallel to the side FeO-Fe2O3, and into the triangle Fe2O3-P2O,-Fe0 (triangle 11) so that the direction of projection is parallel to the side CaO-P2O5, of the tetrahedron. The projected point has the coordinates wt pct CaO, wt pct P205, and wt pct (FeO + Fe2O3) in triangle I and wt pct FeO, wt pct Fe2O3, and wt pct (CaO + PzO5) in triangle 11. Both triangles are turned into the same plane around the Fe203-P20, side of the tetrahedron. An illustration of the projection of a quaternary point in the present system is shown in Fig. 1. The advantage of this type of projection is that all four components for an equilibrium curve can be read directly from the diagram. The present results are shown graphically in Fig. 2. An attempt has been made to compile and code geologic data relating to twenty of the major porphyry copper districts of North America in such a manner as to permit the use of modern electronic digital computers to retrieve, compare, and build statistical mathematical models from the input. In the exploration process as part of his broader efforts to evaluate the potential of some prospective region, district, or ore body, the experienced geologist consciously or subconsciously compares and fits the observed geologic features to similar phenomena associated with known ore bodies with which he is acquainted. Thus an adequate conceptual "model" of the total geologic environment and type of ore body sought is an essential requirement for the successful exploration effort. Numerous such models of porphyry coppers already exist in the minds and notes of many experienced geologists today. These models are, of necessity, couched largely in qualitative terms and though they may be quite definite in the mind of the porphyry copper expert, the total concept of what constitutes a porphyry copper deposit and environment is difficult to convey in very precise terms. There probably is no such thing as a typical porphyry copper deposit. However, it is well understood that most of the deposits that have been studied have many geological characteristics in common. A logical question then might be: What characteristics are most common or how often do they occur in common, and what is their relationship to other common characteristics ?

Pyrite, a mineral associated with uranium ore, is closely related to uranium leaching. In this study, Ozone micro-nano bubbles (OMNBs), as an environmentally friendly advanced oxidation technology, were used for the first time to oxidize pyrite under experimental conditions to improve the leaching rate of uranium. A laboratory-scale agitation leaching experiment of pyrite was carried out with a pH of 1.0–3.0, gas flow of 1–3 L/min, ozone generation rate of 0.55–2.22 mg/s, and pyrite concentration of 0.1–5.0 g/L for 1 h. By adding three different co-oxidant: Mn(II), Mn(IV), and Fe(III), it was found that only Mn(IV) increased the oxidation rate of pyrite by 21.7%. The results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that the formation of Fe(III)-O film on the surface of the ore suppresses the oxidation rate of pyrite to a certain extent. Pyrite can be rapidly oxidized up to 57.6% by OMNBs, which is beneficial to uranium leaching. This method is expected to be used for in situ acid leaching of uranium with OMNBs injected into the ground.

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo evaluar el efecto del volumen de contenedor, la fertilización y riego en la fase de preacondicionamiento en vivero del Pinus douglasiana, así como su aplicación metodológica en Acacia Saligna, con el fin de incrementar el porcentaje de supervivencia a seis meses de su establecimiento en campo. El preacondicionamiento presentó efectos principales e interacciones entre el volumen de contenedor y la fertilización en las variables de crecimiento, con excepción de la altura y diámetro; mientras que el diámetro y peso radical presentaron una interacción entre el volumen de contenedor y el riego. La fertilización adicional no fue relevante para la absorción de minerales en contenedores de un litro y bajo condiciones de estrés hídrico. Como resultado, las plantas establecidas en contenedores de cinco litros sin fertilización adicional tuvieron mayores porcentajes de sobrevivencia en campo (>80%). Esta investigación está siendo utilizada para el diseño de estrategias de remediación de suelos degradados por la minería peruana, mediante la fitorremediación.
