"China is rich in tungsten resource, but they are mainly associated minerals. The similar flotability of scheelite, fluorite, and calcite resulted in the difficult separation by flotation. This work summarized the current situation and the development of flotation reagents, technological process, and mineral processing equipments in China. Fatty acid served as the collector and water glass was the depressant to expand the flotability differences in traditional flotation technology. However the water glass inevitably influenced the flotation of tungsten minerals to a large extend, and the suppressed fluorite was difficult to recover by flotation. Abundant water glass lead to the bad settleability of the tailings and the tail water was difficult to circulate, resulted in serious environmental problems. Recent study proved that the selectivity of benzene armour hydroxyl oxime acid (BAHA) salts was adequate for the separation of tungsten minerals from fluorite, calcite and most silicate minerals without any depressant. By this way, sodium silicate was canceled completely in tungsten flotation, greatly improving the recovery of tungsten and the environmental problems caused by tail water treatment would be solved fundamentally. TUNGSTEN RESOURCES AND DISTRIBUTION IN CHINA China is rich in tungsten resources and the proved reserves accounted for 60% of the world's reserves [1]. However the wolframite has been dried up and the scheelite resources had become the main resource of the tungsten metal. Table 1 showed the most large and superlarge scheelite deposits in China. China has more than 40 large and superlarge scheelite deposits and the total metallic deserves is more than 3 million ton [2]. But most of the deposits were low-grade and the associated relationship was complicated. For example, scheelite was usually associated with wolframite, molybonite, bismuthinite, pyrite, fluorite, and calcite in Shizhuyuan and Yaogangxian mine."

Iran was a lodestone for the attention of industrial countries and companies wanting to share in its industrial development during the last two decades and particularly after 1972. Prior to 1972, most industrial projects in the private sector were on a relatively small scale and could be carried out in reasonably orderly fashion in spite of limitations of a primitive infrastructure and meager indigenous supply of managerial and technical skills. People with these skills could be found but not in abundance, and many of them were total¬ly engaged in various government ministries and projects. Thus it was that nearly all private sector industries, even long-established ones, required one or more foreigners to give guidance. A barite mine and processing facility was brought on line by Dresser Industries in 1960 without serious operational problems. A few expatriate experts were able to select and train a stable group of staff and production people and establish sound management principles for continued growth. The huge and increasing oil revenues after 1973 gave superficial credence to ideas of the Iranian government that the country could easily finance the jump into the industrial 20th century. All necessary skills and equipment not available in Iran would be imported, and intensive training programs would prepare Iranians for operating the new facilities. Large projects for steel production, copper production, oil refining, petrochemical production, cement production, and others were started or expanded. These are basic industries that consume substantial quantities of refractories. Studies made in 1972 indicated that the existing industries plus expanded and new projects scheduled to come into production would lead to a market sufficiently large to justify a refractory producing plant. Concurrent studies of raw material sources showed that clay, the largest tonnage item, would be locally available; the other raw materials would be imported. Iran Refractories Company (IREFCO) was founded in 1973 and started production in 1976.

SUPPLYING as it does a necessity for healthy animal and vegetable phosphate production is a most important industry. We human beings also are animal as this war so surely proves. Unlike many other elements no substitnite is available for phosphorus or its compounds. Marvelous as are modern plastics none can lake the place of phosphorus in making hone structures. As meassured in these times the phosphate industry is not a large industry. Output of phosphate rock, the original source of our agricultural and ,chemical phophates amounts to only some twelve million long tons per annum in the entire world. Phosphates are compounds of phosphorus, which is always found in nature combined with other elements. It never occurs in nature as such. The first choice of the element phosphorus is tie itself strongly to oxygen and then to water moisture - thus becomeing phosphlic acid. This phosphoric acid in turn hunts around for a base such as lime for instance and together they make phosphate of lime.

Some high sulfur and arsenic-bearing gold concentrate has a gold leaching rate less than 80% by oxidation roasting-pickling-cyanidation process. The characteristics and intensification of gold leaching were studied systemically. By combining chemical composition and phase analysis, the low gold leaching rate was found to lie in the capsulation of gold by iron-containing phases including iron oxides, arsenopyrite and pyrite. 96.66% of gold in the industrial leaching residue was capsulated and 95.88% of the capsulated turned out to be in the iron-containing phases. The results of laboratory pickling-cyanidation experiments on the calcine and industrial leaching residue presented further demonstration for the fact that gold capsulated in the iron-containing phases was hard to be leached. However, the gold cyanide leaching rate of calcine could be raised over 95% by a reduction roasting-pickling pretreatment which played such a significant role in exposing the capsulated gold that gold leaching was intensified remarkably.

"The underground operations of Kidd Creek Mines uses an average of 450 U.S. gpm water during regular operations, and discharges an average of 800 U.S. gpm through consecutive staged pumping lifts of 1200f t.Water is used as a flushing medium for the drilling operations and as a dust suppressant for drawpoint mucking. The water retains an average of 5% suspended solids by weight which is removed underground before being pumped to the surface. This paper outlines the treatment of the mine water for the removal of suspended solids which are chemically treated to settle out as a sludge product of 60% solids by weight. This process reduces the sludge handling operation by 50%. The sludge is systematically disposed into the ore passes.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek minesite, located 27 km north of Timmins, Ontario, produces 4.5 million tonne s of copper, lead, zinc and silver ores annually from its No. I and No.2 underground mining operations. Both mines use a sublevel blasthole stoping method of extraction.Water from the underground operation passes through a series of surface settling ponds, where it is treated to remove heavy metal ions from solution. A blend of the pond effluent with fresh water from Kidd Creek, supply the underground with water at an average rate of 450 U.S. gpm. Water flows from the production zones through coarse sumps and into a main pumping station. There are five main pumping stations underground, three in No. I Mine and two in the No.2 Mine.The No. 2 Mine pumping stations are located on the 4800 level and the 3600 level. All water below the 3600 level to the shaft bottom is controlled from the 4800 pumping station. The water from the 4800 pumping section is combined with water from the remaining levels of the No.2 Mine at the 3600 pumping station. Water from the 3600 pumping station is pumped to the 2400 pumping station in No. I Mine.The No. I Mine pumping stations are located on 2800, 2400, and 1200 levels. All water below the 2400 level to the shaft bottom is controlled through the 2800 pumping station. This water is pumped to the 2400 pumping station. The 2400 pumping station also controls the water below 1600level to 2400 level."

A technique of seismic refraction data analysis has been developed in which a digital computer is used to generate a two-dimensional model representing a layered-earth depth interpretation. Travel times are picked on seismic records by the human interpreter. These times, together with shot point and geophone locations and refraction layer control information, are submitted to the computer on punched cards. A first approximation delineation of each refraction horizon is obtained by a computer adaptation of the delay-time method. The approximation is then tested and improved by the computer through the use of a ray-tracing procedure in which ray travel times computed for the model are compared against field-measured travel times. The model is subsequently adjusted in an iterative manner so as to minimize the discrepancy between computed and measured travel times. The Fortran program is listed in the appendix of the report together with instructions for preparing data cards and examples of results.

The Mining Annual Report (RAL) is an obligation for every current owner of a brazilian mining process which is already undergoing extraction. This document is basically composed by the company’s annual book balance, where is possible to educe informations that allow to evaluate the mineral market behavior. This research gathered filtered data linked with RAL production and technical responsability between 2010 and 2017, gotten by the Information Access Law, without the real CNPJ of each company, in order to preserve their identity. The results allow to quantify the Brazilian mining production during the period, illustrating that approximately 46% of the companies can be classified as micro, 30% as small, 20% as medium and 4% as large mining companies. It was observed that the micros concentrate the most part of technical responsibles who sign for more than three mines.

Lixiviant regeneration is by definition a precondition for any hydrometallurgical process. In chloride hydrometallurgy either HCl or Cl2 has to be regenerated in order to establish an economically viable metallurgical process. One such regeneration process is widely used with steel pickling where HC1 is regenerated through the thermal decomposition of ferrous chloride in either spray roasters or fluid bed pyrohydrolyzers. This standard HC1 regeneration process deserves to be considered as a potential separation process, since thermodynamic calculations show that a fluid bed pyrohydrolyzer can function as a ferrous-nonferrous separator. Several nonferrous,metals such as zinc, lead and cadmium can be volatilized as a chloride under ferrous chloride pyrohydrolysis conditions. If such a nonferrous metal volatilization could be achieved in the case of slurry feeding of "contaminated" iron oxides, then this would increase the Fe/H2O ratio of the (process) feed and thus save on fuel per ton of iron, while yielding a marketable iron oxide product. Previous test work on synthetic materials revealed that the near-complete separation of zinc, lead and cadmium from iron oxide was possible in a pyrohydrolytic atmosphere, even if zinc was present as zinc ferrite (more than 99.5%). This investigation, which was carried out in a tube furnace at 1100 K has now been extended to treat synthetic zinc minerals and also franklinite ore. For the latter, it was found that 85% zinc volatilization could be achieved in 4 hours at 1300 K. It is postulated that complete zinc volatilization could not be attained due to the formation and/or presence of gahnite and hardystonite, which might be stable in HCl/H2O atmospheres at 1100 K. The effect of adding small amounts of calcium chloride to react with gahnite and hardystonite to give zinc chloride and both calcium aluminates and silicates is being discussed. Test work on slurry feeding of this complex ore in a recently constructed 4-inch diameter fluid bed pilot unit has been planned for the near future.

Coal reserves of the Rocky Mountain area are vast and are more than adequate to meet significantly increasing demands in the immediate future. Practically all of the increase in coal demand for the next decade or so will be in the electric power utility sector. All ranks of coal are available in the area, and from a technological viewpoint, all are suitable for electric power generation. Location of economically recoverable coal deposits, location of generating plants with respect to power demand areas and sources of cooling water, and availability and price of other fuels are the major factors which, individually or in combination, will determine the ultimate selection of Western coal deposits to be developed for electric power generation. The low sulfur content of most western coals and the non-urban location of many power plants should tend to minimize problems of air pollution. If projections for nuclear power prove correct, increases in demand for Rocky Mountain area coals beyond about 1980 will depend primarily on the extent of commercial development of synthetic fuel processes. Current research activities on the conversion of coal to liquid and gaseous fuels are promising. Most western coals range in rank from lignite through high-volatile bituminous coals and are particularly amenable to conversion. Vast reserves of Rocky Mountain coals have long lain dormant primarily because of their remoteness from major market areas. Recently, however, innovations in coal transportation and electric power transmission methods, combined with unprecedented demands for electric power in the West, have resulted in large-scale development of some of these coals. In the past few years, announcements of coal mine openings and transportation plans in the Southwest have been filled with superlatives: The Navajo mine in northwest New Mexico is expected to be the largest mine in the country in the near future. The largest single coal agreement ever made provides for coal shipment from northeast Arizona to Nevada via the largest and longest coal-slurry pipeline ever used. An 1100-mile haul of coking coal from northern New Mexico to California by unit train began last year. It is the purpose of this report to evaluate the coal resources of the Rocky Mountain area, and to project their potential utilization. In projecting energy demand levels on a national basis, the Bureau of Mines has developed some rather complex techniques to cope with uncertainties. Using these same techniques, an estimate has been made of consumption of Mountain area coal in 1980. No attempt was made to estimate coal consumption beyond 1980, but new market potentials are discussed briefly. The present and potential coal-producing fields of the Rocky Mountain area are in six states comprising the Mountain Region - Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. AT the Sladen-Malartic mine, a number of orebodies have been mined, some by shrinkage and others by open sub-level scopes, from which the ore is handled either through a grizzly system or by mechanical loaders. This paper deals with the comparative costs and relative merits of the two handling arrangements. The facts brought out in this comparison have a bearing on the selection of a proper handling method. The mine is in Fourniere township, northwestern Quebec, about forty miles east of the town of Rouyn. It is served by the Rouyn-Senneterre branch of the Canadian National railways. Two vertical three-compartment shafts give access to the present workings. No. 1 shaft, at which the plant is centralized, is the main hoisting shaft, with five levels to 950 feet. No. 2 shaft, 2,400 feet east of No. 1, is under development, with four levels to 725 feet. At the main shaft, the ore is hand-trammed in 1 1/2 tons cars from the scopes to the stations o:i each level and hoisted in cages to surface at a rope speed of 900 feet per minute. Air-operated tipples are used to dump the ore through grizzlies of 14-inch openings into a surface bin of 150 tons capacity. The ore hoisted at No. 2 shaft is trucked from the headframe bin to the mill. Milling commenced in January, 1938, ar a daily rate of 250 tons. Within two months this rate was increased to the unit's maximum capacity of 325 tons. A second unit to treat a further 325 tons daily was installed in April, 1939. The orebodies mined at No. 1 shaft are parts of a silicified zone at the contact between syenite porphyry and greywacke. The zone is ten co sixty feet wide, strikes easterly, and dips to the south at 55 to 85 degrees. The hanging-wall of the zone is marked, though not precisely, by a strong gouge fault. Locally, the boundary of silicification may be as much as twenty feet either above or below the fault, but for practical mining purposes the fault is the hanging-wall of the ore-zone. The footwall roughly parallels the fault, but as an assay wall it is usually irregular in detail. The ore is dense and hard, a siliceous replacement of both porphyry and greywacke, mineralized with fine disseminated pyrite.

Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and south-western Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in Fig. 1. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Guleman, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran. Reply by J.C. Wynn Mr. Hillebrand raises two issues that deserve a serious response. One issue is basically subjective and the other is ultimately political. First, the question of where (and how many) podiform chromite deposits are found in the idealized ophiolite section of Dickey (1975). The Dickey model is still perhaps somewhat controversial (Panayoutou, 1980), but our experience in the Josephine ophiolite of northern California (Wynn, 1980; and Albers, 1983) shows that the model works well there. Virtually all the chromite is found in dunite lenses in the tectonite peridotite (harzburgite). Since there are few complete ophiolites exposed in the world, the model will probably never satisfy everyone. The degree of acceptance is a function of any individual's subjective experience. Second, it is well known that stratiform chromite contributes more than 95% of the chromite reserves presently known in the world, and it could be reasonably argued that there is no point in exploring for or exploiting podiform deposits further. The title of the paper, however, was in part 'strategic minerals geophysical research'; chromite is considered a strategic and critical mineral of the US and many other industrialized nations. Stratiform deposits in South Africa and Zimbabwe account for most of the chromite reserves in the world. Unfortunately, experience in modern times with substantial price fluctuations and even resource cartels dictates the wisdom of identifying and maintaining a national chromite reserve, irrespective of the cost. An improved exploration methodology is an essential element in this strategic objective. Heap leaching with thiosulfate is only used in one location for the treatment of a refractory preg-robbing gold ore initially pre-treated with bio-oxidation. The chemistry of thiosulfate leaching is complex. Further work is required to develop a better control of the system. A mild refractory gold ore containing pyrite and chalcopyrite was used in this study to investigate the use of thiosulfate as an alternative heap leaching technology. Preliminary bottle rolls tests indicated that similar gold extraction was obtained with cyanide and thiosulfate. In the column leach test, effects of thiosulfate, copper and ammonia concentrations, and their ratio on both gold extraction and reagent consumption, were assessed. The range of reagent concentration were: 0.1 - 1.0M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.03 - 0.10M CuSO4*5H2O, 1.0 - 6.0M NH4OH. The solid-liquid ratio was in the range of 0.83:1 to 5: 1. Best results showed that 72% of gold was extracted in 50 days with 0.3M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.05M CuSO4*5H2O and 6M NH4OH or a combination of 1.0M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.03M CuSO4*5H2O and 3M NH4OH. The reagent consumption at solid/liquid ratio of 3:1 was 37 - 48.6 kg/t (NH4)2S2O3 and 0 - 0.62 kg/t CuSO4*5H2O. The results of thiosulfate leaching were also compared with cyanide leaching.

The Pb-Zn-Ag deposits within the Lower and Middle Paleozoic strata of central Colorado (Leadville, Gilman, Aspen, and others) occur principally in Late Mississippian karst-solution features within dolomites and, to a lesser extent, limestones. Several un- conformities within the Devonian and Mississippian carbonate rocks and the subregional dolomitization of the Leadville (Mississippian) Formation that occurred during the Late Mississippian resulted from recurrent uplift of elements of the Ancestral Sawatch, Gore, and Front Range areas within central Colorado. Uplift of these areas also strongly influenced the details of the extensive karst topography that developed during the Late Mississippian. In particular, uplift of the Sawatch Range area caused paleovalleys from 300-600 ft deep to form on the karst landscape. The pattern of karst-solution caverns, sinkholes, cutters, channelways, and breccia-rubble zones was strongly controlled by incision of surface drainages and the strong northeast-trending Mississippian joint system. These subterranean karst-solution features and breccia-rubble soil [ ] zones are the primary controls of the location of the Pb-Zn-Ag ore deposits in these rocks. In the Leadville and Aspen districts, the deeply incised paleovalleys occur immediately adjacent to the principal areas of mineralization. Pennsylvanian deposition of a thick terrigenous and evaporite sequence occurred within central Colorado in response to actively subsiding extensional basins and adjacent high-relief uplift areas. Hot brines developed within the Pennsylvanian strata, migrated laterally to, and moved upward vertically along, basin- margin faults during continued Pennsylvanian subsidence and deposition. These metal-rich brines migrated into karst-solution features within the Lower and Middle Paleozoic dolomites and limestones, principally within the Leadville Formation, in basin- edge uplifted locales where the Pb-Zn-Ag minerals were precipitated. Field relationships, mineral assemblages and paragenesis, fluid-inclusion data, and isotope studies suggest that the metals and brines were derived within the Pennsylvanian sedimentary sequence and that the ore minerals were deposited under different temperatures and at different depths from deposit to deposit. Chemical reaction with the carbonate cave sediment and wallrock, cooling of fluid temperatures, and mixing with meteoric ground waters were the probable combined causes of mineral deposition in the karst-solution features. Late Cretaceous-Tertiary intrusive activity has subsequently modified some of the primary Pb-Zn-Ag deposits in local areas.

The Underground Injection Control program was promulgated in 1981 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Placement of mine waste backfill underground is considered underground injection under the provisions of this program. A major issue is whether mine waste that is regulated as a contaminant source on the surface should be disposed of underground. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to investigate the impacts of mine waste sandfill on the quality of ground water. Analyses of water samples collected before and after contact with sandfill in a 10-year-old stope, as well as samples of the sandfill itself, were used to ascertain the influence of the sandfill after mine closure and subsequent flooding. Computer models supported the hypothesis that oxidation of pyrite by oxygen, accompanied by dissolution of carbonates, was the predominant reaction controlling the quality of the water being discharged from the stope. Concentrations of metals released as a result of acid production remained near or below detection limits. Metals release after mine flooding is expected to remain low as a result of the buffering by the sandfill and the reduced rate of oxidation.

The problem of converting our raw coal, and especially those coals that are not suited for long storage, in other words soft, into a fuel which would be at once clean; of a high B. t, u. content and low ash, is one that has occupied the minds of many able chemical engineers and hydrocarbon technologists during the past few years. Low temperature carbonization is the present outcome of this line of research, and many methods have been evolved of recent years to turn out a serviceable, useful fuel, and at the same time, save the by-products. As most of the research and data within my experience and knowledge pertains to lignite or sub-bituminous coals, I will confine my remarks to coals of that character and grade: I might say that Colorado coals, commonly called lignite, are not in reality true lignite, but are sub-bituminous, although I have in my possession an analysis of a Colorado coal which shows a moisture of 17 per cent, volatile 31.5 per cent, fixed carbon 28.8 per cent, and an ash of 22.7 per cent, and B. t. u. less than 8,000. Even this, though useless for domestic or indeed industrial purposes, could not be classified as true lignite. However, for the purposes of this paper I will refer to these coals as lignite. Two thousand pounds, or one ton, of raw lignite carries about 20 per cent moisture. This, of course, varies in some coals, but is, I believe, a fair average. For carbonization purposes this is usually dried to a 5 per cent moisture, therefore leaving but 1,700 pounds of coal to be placed in the retort. From present knowledge, and with the average process of carbonization, 70 per cent of this coal will come out carbonized, or 1,190 pounds, to which is added about 10 per cent pitch, which is fried out as the coal passes through the retort, and which is used as a binder, making a total of 1,360 pounds of coke or carbonized coal. This is usually in appearance a dark colored, rather porous coke of about the size of pea coal. It burns without smoke and have a very high B. t. u. content. According to most authorities on this subject, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur and ash constitute the only elements on which carbonization value of a coal depends, and of these hydrogen is the most important. It is claimed the value of a coal for carbonization purposes may be roughly surmised from the hydrogen content. If this is promising, that is, showing an available hydrogen content of from 3 to 5 per cent, the coal should be given a careful ultimate analysis. Should the seam, as often happens in lignite coals, show varying bands of coal of different structure or appearance, samples should be taken from each band as well as a gross sample taken down the face of the seam in the usual way. This is in order to determine what part of the seam is most promising for by-product processes. A seam showing a high nitrogen content adds to the attractiveness of the coal in carbonizing as; if available nitrogen is 2 per cent or better, it should give a very high ammonia yield.

"INTRODUCTION Inertial classification, gravitational sedimentation centrifugation, and thermal precipitation arc techniques that can be used to collect particles for subsequent analysis or for particle classification. The inertial classifiers, which include impactors, virtual impactors, and cyclones, are widely used in the sampling or particles. Settling chambers, which include centrifuges as well as gravitational settling devices, are less widely used. Thermal precipitators arc seldom used.Impactors, in particular, have been used extensively, studied both theoretically and experimentally, and arc the instrument or choice for the determination or aerosol mass size distributions. Many versions or impactors arc available commercially and many more have been designed, built, and used in special studies.Virtual impactors are a more recently developed inertial classifier and possess a feature not round in conventional inertial impactors; namely, that the particles remain airborne after classification compared to the conventional impactor, where the particles arc collected on a solid surface. Pyrite, a mineral associated with uranium ore, is closely related to uranium leaching. In this study, Ozone micro-nano bubbles (OMNBs), as an environmentally friendly advanced oxidation technology, were used for the first time to oxidize pyrite under experimental conditions to improve the leaching rate of uranium. A laboratory-scale agitation leaching experiment of pyrite was carried out with a pH of 1.0–3.0, gas flow of 1–3 L/min, ozone generation rate of 0.55–2.22 mg/s, and pyrite concentration of 0.1–5.0 g/L for 1 h. By adding three different co-oxidant: Mn(II), Mn(IV), and Fe(III), it was found that only Mn(IV) increased the oxidation rate of pyrite by 21.7%. The results of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that the formation of Fe(III)-O film on the surface of the ore suppresses the oxidation rate of pyrite to a certain extent. Pyrite can be rapidly oxidized up to 57.6% by OMNBs, which is beneficial to uranium leaching. This method is expected to be used for in situ acid leaching of uranium with OMNBs injected into the ground.

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo evaluar el efecto del volumen de contenedor, la fertilización y riego en la fase de preacondicionamiento en vivero del Pinus douglasiana, así como su aplicación metodológica en Acacia Saligna, con el fin de incrementar el porcentaje de supervivencia a seis meses de su establecimiento en campo. El preacondicionamiento presentó efectos principales e interacciones entre el volumen de contenedor y la fertilización en las variables de crecimiento, con excepción de la altura y diámetro; mientras que el diámetro y peso radical presentaron una interacción entre el volumen de contenedor y el riego. La fertilización adicional no fue relevante para la absorción de minerales en contenedores de un litro y bajo condiciones de estrés hídrico. Como resultado, las plantas establecidas en contenedores de cinco litros sin fertilización adicional tuvieron mayores porcentajes de sobrevivencia en campo (>80%). Esta investigación está siendo utilizada para el diseño de estrategias de remediación de suelos degradados por la minería peruana, mediante la fitorremediación.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop and improve mining methods for mining thin coal beds, to increase productivity, and to increase the recovery of coal. German coal planers and a modified longwall system of mining were introduced into American mines and are bringing about increased productivity and better recovery as compared with the conventional methods displaced. Since the first installation, 4 additional planers have been purchased by coal companies and over 1-1/2 mil¬lion tons of coal has been mined by them, using the modified longwall mining method. INTRODUCTION Except from 1932 to 1934, the growth of mechanical loading in underground bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States has increased steadily. The amount of coal loaded mechanically in underground mines has increased from 0.3 percent in 1923 to 79.6 percent of the total underground production in 1953.3/ The use of new and improved mining machines and auxiliary equipment, together with new techniques in mining methods, usually has resulted in increased productivity.

For worker safety, mining companies are required to stop production and inspect hoist ropes. Visual inspection is generally done daily and EM inspection occurs every three to four months. During visual inspection, rope speed is generally reduced so an inspector can look for problems. In EM testing the LMA and LF traces are printed on a paper strip chart and a skilled operator interprets these traces. Mining companies only find large defects during visual inspection and are sometimes concerned about the content of EM trace information. This paper will present research outcomes that show how muck can be hoisted while performing a complete visual rope inspection at full speed. Other research results will show that digital signal processing can increase the amount of information available to the EM rope inspector. The research was funded by Inco, C-CORE, three AMIRA International sponsors and six sponsors from the Canadian Deep Mining Research Consortium (DMRC). The research will be commercialised in 2005.
