Consolidated Quarries Corp. must conduct operations for an average sales price of $1.25 per ton, about the same price at which stone was sold 25 years ago when the dollar was worth twice what it is now. To maintain success in a competitive business, the company must solve the usual production problems, which will be discussed here in the order they occur in the flowsheet. Most crushed stone quarries must first remove soil and decomposed rock. Although seasons of lower sales sometimes release regular quarry excavating and haulage equipment for this purpose, overburden is often too extensive for this method to be used. In such cases, special equipment must be assigned or the job may be contracted. As many earthmoving contractors have heavy duty specialized equipment well suited to overburden removal, they should be seriously considered before the job is undertaken. Pockets of clay beneath peaks of hard stone sometimes defy mechanized removal. Pick and shovel laborers at this point might be supplanted by more ingenious use of pumps and water or some other mechanical means. Where overburden is extremely heavy or difficult to remove, underground mining must be considered.

Nippon Mining and Metals Company has an annual indium production capacity of 30 tons at its Saganoseki smelter and refinery. Lately, indium content in the. zinc smelting dust, one of the main sources, has been on the decrease while the amount of impurity in it on the increase. The present process at Saganoseki does not permit efficient elimination of a large. amount of impurity. Therefore, studies were conducted to improve its recovery process. As a result, a new indium recovery process consisting of leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning has been developed. The new process was tested at a pilot plant and satisfactory results were obtained. This new process is discussed in this paper.

In gold exploration and metallurgical testing, the role of the mineralogist is to assist in solving problems with regard to (a) sampling, (b) gold occurrences, and (c) petrologic classifications of host rocks. The presence of "coarse" gold as a sampling problem can be overcome by various methods, including "screen fire assays," screened analyses and special gravity techniques which may be used to determine distributions of "coarse" versus fine gold. Determinations of mineralogic associations of gold usually require special separation techniques, accompanied by fire-AA-mineralogic assays of the products. After accurate mineralogic analyses are obtained for various products, quantitative distributions of refractory gold associations can be calculated by the use of simultaneous equations. Petrologic classifications are required by the geologist for mapping and interpretation of the various rocks. After the petrology and mineralogic differences of the rock units are determined, x-ray diffraction analyses of analytical pulps can be used for lithologic logging of drill cores. XRD logging is an efficient method for correlating lithologic units and alteration trends throughout a gold prospect.

In most of the smelters, the management of flue dust has a double objective: the control of minor elements in the anodes and the management of volatiles compounds that can cause contamination due to fugitive gas emissions. This is a special concern when high content of Va elements (As, Sb & Bi) are present in concentrates. We present the results of the experimental study to prove the principle of a novel process that recovers, via volatilization, the As, Sb and Bi in the flue dust as gaseous sulfides, due to a previous sulfidization. In the case of as control any further classical treatment for its stabilization is possible from the gas. The clean calcine can be returned to the smelter avoiding any concentration of these minor elements in the circuit. This process is now tested at pilot scale and shows better indices on carbon footprint than the classical hydrometallurgical process for flue dust.

Laboratory-scale experiments have shown that chromium metal could be recovered from chromate wastes by modifying slightly the chromium electrowinning flow-sheet. After reduction by sulhr dioxide and precipitation of chromic hydroxide, the solid residue is dissolved in the chrome alum solution and the metallic impurities are removed by cementation on manganese. The presence of dissolved manganese in the electrolyte does not affect the cathodic deposition of chromium and it eliminates the anodic production of Cr(V1).

The binary alloy system Mo-C zoas investigated by means of X-ray, metallog/aphic, thermoanalytical, and melting-point techniques on chemically analyzed specimens. The system, Fig. 39, is characterized by three congruently melting, intermediate phases, Mo2C, n MoCi-x, and aMoC1-,, of which only Mo,C is stable at temperatures below 1650°C. Substoichio-metrzc (~32.5 at. pct C) dimolybdenum carbide undergoes a homogeneous sublattice order-disorder transformation at temperatures of approximately 1400°C, whereas hyperstoichiorrletric compositions undergo a discontinuous Phase change. The order-disorder transitions in the Me, C phases are discussed in terms of the structural changes involved in the transformation processes and the absence of long-range sublattice coherency in stoichiometric or hyperstoiclziomet-ric compositions attributed to the impossibility of obtaining long-range order in a linear chain of alternating carbon atoms and vacancies. From the experimental phase relutionships and the known thermody-namic data for Mo2 C, limits for the free energies of formation for the high-temperature phases r) MoC1-, and aMoC1-, are deriued and found to be in good agreement with data previously obtained from phase equilibria in ternary metal-carbon systems. Echo Bay Minerals operates a 650 tpd gravity float gold circuit at their Manhattan facility. The objective of this paper was to document the gold recovery by size distribution. This was accomplished by studying the material balance of each size fraction as it progressed through each gravity Circuit separator. It proved to be an impossible task. Figure I depicts the gravity circuit. The gravity cyclone underflow goes to two duplex Pan American type jigs. The jig overflow reports to the OK Flash Float Cell. The cyclone hutch product is reground and goes to a full size wilfly table. The rougher table concentrate reports to a pilot size Wi1fly cleaner table. The cleaner and rougher table tails circulate back to the jig feed. The gravity circuit was composite sampled for two to four hours per day for four days. Each sample was taken every 20 minutes. Each composite sample was filtered, dried, repu1ped, and screened through a wet/dry screening procedure. Each size fraction was checked for gold value by fire assay fussion technique. A material balance was run on each size fraction. The tables listing the results are enclosed.

A study of ion-exchange resin crosslinkage and eluant flow rate, resin-bed shape, and addition of separating ions to feed stock was undertaken to determine their effect on the separation efficiency of ion-exchange on bastna-site-rare-earth elements. Results show that 12-percent divinylbenzene (DVB) crosslinkage resin is detrimental to separation efficiency at flow rates over 2 to 5 ml./min./sq. cm.; whereas, separation with 4-percent DVB crosslinkage resin is relatively unaffected by flow rates between 2 and 10 m1./min./sq.cm.

The New Almaden mine was discovered in 1824, and since that date production of quicksilver has exceeded 1,000,000 flasks. Because of this high production record, the New Almaden area was, upon passage. by Congress of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939, immediately considered by the Bureau of Mines as a promising location for exploration. In 1941, the Federal Geological Survey undertook a survey of the entire district. R. R. Trengove, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, made a preliminary study for a project in 1942, and in August 1943 the Bureau, in close cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, began the development project described herein. The Bureau of Mines drilled 36 holes, totaling 6,807 feet of diamond drilling, along the contact between the serpentine and Franciscan, sandstones and other sedimentary formations. The ore bodies are found along this contact and occur in the carbonate-silica rock. This report briefly describes the location, history, and ore deposits of the property. The recent operations are outlined, and the work performed by the Bureau is explained in detail.

"Computer simulations of structural and compositional development in equiaxed dendritic alloy solidification are performed using a recently developed multi phase model. The model not only accounts for the transport phenomena occurring on the macroscopic (system) scale, but includes also the grain nucleation and growth mechanisms taking place at various microscopic length scales. In this paper, a numerical technique consisting of a fully implicit control-volume based finite difference method and a multiple time step scheme is developed for accurate and efficient simulations of both micro- and macro-phenomena. Sample numerical results are presented to reveal the effects of liquid now and crystal sedimentation on segregation and the final grain size distribution. In particular, the importance of the interplay between the dendrite microstructure and multiphase now patterns is shown.IntroductionIn recent years, modeling of equiaxed dendritic solidification without convection has experienced considerable progress (1,2]. Nucleation and growth kinetic laws have been coupled with transient heat conduction calculations to determine the solidification microstructure. However, modeling of equiaxed dendritic solidification with melt convection and solid movement has not been attempted so far, largely because of the complications associated with the transport of free equiaxed crystals in the melt. The gravity-induced transport of free crystals is fundamental to the development and extent of the equiaxed zone and also greatly affects the columnar to equiaxed transition. Another possible effect of crystal sedimentation or floatation is to cause severe macrosegregation as well as structural inhomogeneities. The only study available in the literature that accounts for both liquid convection and solid transport is by Ni and Beckermann (3], but deals with globulitic structures (as opposed to dendritic)"

Experimental results on the oxidation reaction kinetics in the forward combustion oil recovery process are presented. A total of 48 runs were made wherein a stationary thin layer of coked, unconsoli-dated sand was burned isothermally in a combustion cell. Individual runs were made at various temperature levels to permit determination of the effect of temperature upon the reaction. An expression was obtained for the burning rate of carbon as a function of carbon concentration, combustion temperature and oxygen partial pressure. The carbon burning rate for two types of crude oil indicated a first order reaction with respect to both carbon concentration and oxygen partial pressure. The effect of combustion temperature on the reaction rate constant matched the Arrhenius equation. The activation energy was similar for the two crude oils examined. The activation energy decreased for a porous media containing clay. The rate of oxidation of crude oil at reservoir temperature was found to be significant. Other significant findings included information on hydrogen-carbon content of fuel residues, fuel reactivity and the products of combustion. INTRODUCTION The production of crude oil by underground combustion has been studied in the laboratory by many investigators.1-5 Results of laboratory and field experiments have been reported in the literature describing the forward combustion process. But as yet, no qualitative or quantitative study of the kinetics of fuel combustion involved in this process has been reported. The fuel concentration and the rate at which fuel is burned at the front are important factors governing the air requirement in a forward combustion operation. Although the fuel is essentially unrecoverable crude, the air required to burn the fuel is an important economic factor in this process. Because fuel is burned, the heat transport associated with forward combustion is a key and unique feature of this new oil recovery method. Many investiga-tors5-9 have presented information on the heat transmission and fluid mechanics involved in forward combustion. Berry and Parrish10 demonstrated the utility of considering reaction kinetics in reverse burning. From differential thermal analysis, Tadema11 presented a qualitative discussion of the nature of reactions between oil and oxygen in combustion oil recovery. Although little quantitative work has been done on the reaction kinetics involved in forward combustion oil recovery, an extensive literature does exist on combustion of carbons and oils, and carbonaceous residues from cracking catalyst pellets. Dart, et al., 12 studied the combustion rate for oxidation of carbonaceous residues on clay catalyst pellets, and found the reaction to be second-order with respect to carbon concentration, and first-order with respect to oxygen partial pressure for carbon concentrations less than 2 weight percent of the catalyst weight. The reaction appeared to be first-order with respect to carbon concentration for concentrations greater than 2 percent. Metcalfe13 noted that other workers had found that aging of the fuel during the combustion process was responsible for changing coke properties, and it accounted for the apparent second-order carbon concentration effect found by Dart, et al. It appears that burning of residues from cracking pellets is first-order with respect to both carbon concentration and oxygen partial pressure. Dart, et al., also observed that hydrogen in the hydrocarbon residue appeared to react faster than the carbon. Lewis, et al.,14 studied oxidation of charcoal, coke and graphite in a fluidized bed. Gas velocities were high enough to partially lift and circulate the carbon particles. Their results indicated first-order reaction dependency with respect to both carbon concentration and oxygen partial pressure. One

THIS paper is a brief description of the design and equipment of a new coal mine in southern Illinois, which has many features not common practice in shaft coal mining and which is laid out and equipped for such unusually large capacity that it promises soon to become one of the largest mining operations of its kind. Shaft sinking for the mine, New Orient, was commenced in May, 1921, by the Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin Coal Co. In October, 1924, the plant was practically completed and was producing over 6000 tons of coal per day. There is good prospect that within a few years, when the mine is fully developed and manned, the output will attain a daily rate of 12,000 tons. The coal seam at New Orient lies approximately horizontal, about 500 ft. below the surface, and may be said to run from 9 to 12 ft. in thickness. The tendency in Franklin County has been toward large mining units (5000 to 6000 tons per day) with great care being given to protection against fire and explosion hazards, and usually with quite elaborate surface plants permitting careful preparation of the coal into graded sizes comparable with those made in the anthracite region. The field is unionized, with uniform conditions of wages for various classes of work, hours, etc., and the Illinois mining laws are quite specific with regard to fireproofing and safety measures. These conditions make it difficult for any but well-equipped and well-operated mines to meet the competition of the numerous fine properties of which this county can justly be proud. The coal company's property was already developed on the western side by the Orient. mine-a much visited and written about operation (with which many of you are possibly familiar through the Department of Mines' film "The Story of Coal ") which until recently held the 8-hr. production record with 8218 tons and usually ran quite consistently with production of slightly over 6000 tons per day. Experience at Orient was naturally one of the greatest influences in determining the location and character of the New Orient.

The San Manuel property is in town&ips 8S and 9S, range 16E, Gila and salt River Base and Meridan, State of Arizona. This area is in the Old Hat mining district, southern pinal county, and is about 31/25 miles southwest of the town of Mammoth on the San Pedro River And one mile south of the Mammoth mine at Tiger, Arizona, The property consists of over 150 contiguous lode claims. The old Hat district was prospected prior to the civil war, but there was little or no production until 1881.1 The chief producers have been the Mammoth and Mohawk mines, now consolidated and operating as the st. Anthony Mining and Development Co., Ltd. Production to 1936 was $5,200,000, of which 83 pet was gold.2 Since 1940 the production has been chiefly lead and zinc, and some molybdenum and vanadium. There are a few small properties in the vicinity that have produced very minor tonnages of copper ore. In the San Manuel group there are claims which have been held continuously from 1906 to the present time, and at least two churn-drill holes were put down on or near the outcrop in 1917. No logs for these holes are available, but it is assumed that the grade of copper encountered was not sufficient to encourage further exploration. A small amount of ore has been shipped from open cuts on the San Manuel outcrop area, but there is no record of the tonnage Or grade. It is estimated that not more than 50 tons were mined. These cuts, plus a few shallow shafts and some short adits indicate limited and unenthusiastic prospecting at San Manuel. In 1942, through the efforts of James M. Douglas, R. B. Giffin, Victor Erickson, and Henry W. Nichols, owners of the Sari Manuel group, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and War Production Board authorized the United States Geological Survey to investigate the property, and by their recommendation, the United States Bureau of Mines was authorized to put down a limited number of churn-drill holes. The Bureau of Mines carried On drilling from November 1943 to February 1945 Seventeen holes were drilled, varying from 305 to 1990 ft in depth. The property was brought to the attention of Magma Copper Co. in June 1944, and an option agreement was made with the Owners. Subsequently, a group of claims lying north of the original group and held by the Apex Lead Vanadium Mining Corp, and a group to the east held by the Quarelli family, were optioned. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the effectiveness of long holes in degasifying an area of the Upper Split of the Lower Sunnyside coalbed at Kaiser Steel CO.'s Sunnyside No. 1 mine. These holes were drilled from the two outside entries of a section that was closed to mining because of excessive methane emissions. Two holes drilled to 430 and 450 feet produced initial gas flows of 160,000 and 127,000 cfd, respectively. Sixteen days after the completion of the second hole, the total gas production declined to just over 144,000 cfd. In 9 months of degasification, over 35 MMcf of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the coalbed. The combined gas flows declined to 106,000 cfd in the 9-month period. The two holes have reduced face emissions by about 40 pct.

Methods of calculation of the reliability of process computers are getting more and more important. The paper presents long period observations of 21 process computers with online applications in the iron and steel industry. About 5000 failure events during 10 years have been systematically recorded and evaluated. On the basis of these long time observations it is possible to develop a probability model of the failure behaviour of process computers.This failure model is constructed with four different states of the process computer:Working phase, working phase with undetected reasons, repair phase, failure phase resulting from external influences.The model is defined by differential equations for the probability of one of these four phases. Long time observations show, that all of these four phases are closely correlated with the capa-city of a process computer, restarting without detection of failure reason, changes of programs and software, costs and time of repair. So the result of this analysis is a model of failure for process computers, which allows to predict breakdowns of process computers on the basis of external parameters.

The flow in a hydrocyclone classifier is highly turbulent complex nature of multi-phase structure, which has led designers to rely on empirical mathematical models for predicting the performance. A number of classifying cyclone models have been developed and successfully used in mineral comminution circuit simulators over the past four decades (Plitt, 1976 and Nageswararao, 1978). However, most of the mathematical models currently available to describe hydrocyclone classifier performance are based on single average mineral density component behavior. In industrial comminution circuits, the feed to the cyclone composed of a mixture of particles of varying degrees of liberation and sizes. The behavior of multi-component particles in a hydrocyclone is poorly understood and unaccounted for in most of the mathematical model equations available in the literature. There is evidence from a number of experimental data sets indicating the significant influence of the multi-component particles on measured cyclone performance. A concept for modeling the performance of hydrocyclones based on multi-component behavior is proposed in this paper. A set of semi-empirical model equations for cut-size, sharpness of separation are presented and the corresponding model parameters evaluated from the measured data are given.

U.S. supply and demand data for dry natural gas by source, form, and major consuming sectors--within and between States and defined regions--were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. State-by-State quantitative data are provided for the natural gas industry that can be arranged into regional groupings and used to determine regional flow patterns. The tables show the derivation of the total supply of gas available for consumption from total marketed production. The tables also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and commercial, industrial, transportation, and electricity generation, utilities). The summarized data show an increase in the absolute demand for natural gas in all regions for the period 1960-65, although the relative posit ions of the various subregions, with respect to national consumption, remained about the same. To enable comparison of data on dry natural gas with data on other energy sources, quantities in terms of million cubic feet were converted to British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents.
