On commencing the construction of the Orford Company's copper smelting works, at Bergen Point, N. J., I endeavored to convince our President, Mr. W. E. C. Eustis, by actual tests, that at the pressure of from 15 to 18 ounces per square inch, employed by us in smelting, less power was consumed in delivering a unit of blast by a Baker blower than by a fan blower. I attempted to prove this in the following manner: Across the mouth of a No. 5) Baker blower I firmly fastened a board with two round holes, 6 inches in diameter, cut in it. The board was fastened so tightly that no air could escape except through the holes. I then drove the blower at several differerent speeds, observing the pressure at which the air excaped through the two openings for each different speed of the blower, and also indicating the engine, whose only work at that time was to drive the blower. From this I calculated the quantity of power required to deliver, with a Baker blower, sufficient air to keep the pressure at a given point, while it escaped freely through the two six-inch apertures into the open air; or, in other words, to deliver air at a given pressure through these two openings. From the total power so consumed it was, of course, necessary to deduct the power which was required to drive the engine itself. This was ascertained by removing from the engine the belt which drove the blower, and then noting the quantity of power consumed in simply turning the engine over without any

THE purpose of this chapter is to present a general outline of the basic open-hearth process for the benefit of students, practicing open-hearth operators, and metallurgists who wish to review the subject. The discussion is limited to a description of the sequence and purpose of the operations, illustrated by data and examples. Subsequent chapters deal with more detailed and fundamental studies of the subject. The function of the basic open-hearth furnace is to convert various types of ferrous material into finished steel of given com- position and quality. In comparison with other steelmaking methods, the basic open-hearth process is one of the most versa- tile, both from the standpoint of the raw materials that can be used and the types of steel that can be produced. The process can be considered as a sequence involving melting, refining, and deoxidation. With some types of liquid-metal charges, the melting stage is not present, but refining and deoxidation in varying degrees are fundamental features of the process. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF BASIC OPEN-HEARTH PROCESS The first consideration in open-hearth practice is the type of charge on which the operation is based. This consists of three components-fluxing, oxidizing, and metallic materials. Fluxes. In the basic process the fluxing material is primarily lime, added in the form of either limestone (CaC03) or burnt lime (CaO) . This is supplemented by magnesia (MgO) and lime from the furnace bottom and banks. The function of these fluxes is to form a slag with the silica (SiO2) , manganese oxide (MnO), iron oxides (FeO and Fe203), and phosphorus oxide (P205) that are produced by the oxidation of varying amounts of the silicon, manganese, iron, and phosphorus in the charge during melting and refining. The slag, composed of the basic fluxes and the neutral and acid oxides, floats on top of the steel bath when the charge is melted. THE Salt Creek oil field in Natrona County, Wyo., is the largest pool that has been found in the Rocky Mountain region and one of the largest in the United States. Many features of its production records are of peculiar interest, because of the unusual slowness with which it has been developed. This paper is published by the permission of the Midwest Refining Co., whose records have been freely drawn upon. Many mem¬bers of the Midwest organization have assisted in the collection of the material, but Messrs. F. E. Wood and L. E. Smith have been particularly helpful. The Salt Creek oil field is situated on a great dome with a closure of about 1500 ft., which rises at the northern end of a long anticline extending north-northwest by south-southeast for fully 25 miles. The productive area includes parts of townships 39 and 40 north and ranges 78 and 79 west of the sixth principal meridian. The Teapot oil field occupies a minor dome at about the center of the same anticline and adjoins the Salt Creek oil field on the southeast. The Teapot Naval Reserve includes the Teapot Dome and about 760 acres of the Salt Creek dome. In this paper, the Salt Creek oil field will be considered as' including all of the dome, except that part which lies within the Teapot Naval Reserve and the area west of the dome where oil is produced from shale crevices.

Any discussion of barite mining is virtually impossible without considering, almost in the same breath, the many other variables, such as beneficiation, transportation, infrastructure and location that impact the economics of a particular barite orebody. My comments will be limited to just the mining aspects of barite orebodies and these observations must be considered in proper context with all other parameters affecting exploitation of a barite property prior to final decision on economic feasibility. In many instances low-cost mining situations are more than offset by high-cost beneficiation requirements. Likewise, there are cases of relatively high-cost mining associated with no or low-cost beneficiation requirements thus permitting economic exploitation. Barite orebodies and occurrences are almost as varied as the number of occurrences. As in most mining situations, the design of a mine plan and implementation of a proper exploitation program must be approached on a case by case basis. Proper and sufficient geologic control of a barite orebody must precede the development of a mine plan. Generally speaking, barite orebodies can and, at many times, do "strange" things; pinch with depth; almost never increase in size with depth, overturn, fault-off, change grade, etc. Due to the extreme variable nature of most barite orebodies, a mine plan and its implementation must be as flexible as possible. The ability to quickly adapt to variable conditions will greatly enhance the economics within a particular barite mining environment.

L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser l’efficacité de la conception des bancs miniers de la fosse Tiriganiaq du projet minier Meliadine par rapport à des critères de fiabilité rencontrés dans la littérature et la pratique. L’article présente les similitudes et les différences entre les résultats obtenus pour les différents critères et propose une approche multicritère systématique pour évaluer la fiabilité des bancs miniers à l’aide de cartes de susceptibilité.

This report summarizes the work performed by the Bureau of Mines on the development of analytical procedures for determining metallic and interstitial impurities in high-purity tungsten. Fourteen published methods and seven unpublished methods are briefly described. Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, in microgram to higher quantity levels, can be determined by several methods. Trace levels of 29 metallic impurity elements can be determined by optical spectrography, X-ray spectrography, and other instrumental methods.

In the November 1957 issue of "Chemical Process Engineering," a British publications, there appeared an article entitled "Correct Selection of Drying Equipment." The author wrote as follows "Whether batch drying or continuous drying' methods are applied, the basis of efficient drying is heat distribution, control of rate of heat input, and heat transference from heating medium to the particles of the material to be dried." The author continues: "Because the efficiency of direct dryers, such as hot air or hot gas dryers, increases with rising inlet temperature of the drying air or gas when exhaust temperature remains fixed, the highest practical drying temperature should be used. Exhaust air should leave the dryer at the lowest possible temperature, but as fully saturated with moisture as possible." It is certainly conceivable that the author of this article by outlining the basic requirements for efficient drying methods has unwittingly given the reasons why fluidized drying is rapidly being adopted for so many industrail applications, including the dryingof fine coal. An examination in greater detail of the individual basic requirements for efficient drying as outlined by the author is perhaps the most logical starting point.

"Partial reduction reactions in the Ni-AI-O system, starting with the spinel compound NiAI20 4, are used to form metal-ceramic microstructures. By suitable choice of processing parameters, such as reduction temperature, oxygen partial pressure and time, two different morphologies of nearly pure Ni particles, equiaxed and rod-like, form within a ceramic matrix, which is either a-A12O3 or a metastable ""defect spinel"". Electron microscopy studies were performed for microstructural characterization, phase identification and chemical analysis. The fracture toughness of the Ni-AI2O 3 mixture was significantly improved with respect to that of the original spinel phase. The important issues that must be addressed to form useful metal-ceramic microstructures by partial reduction reactions rue discussed. It is shown that cracking at the original spinel grain boundaries, likely due to the large volume changes associated with the reduction reaction, can be avoided by the addition of small amounts of ZrO2• Initial results illustrating effect of ZrO2 on the microsuuctures are presented.IntroductionEngineering materials used in load bearing circumstances, particularly under extreme conditions (e.g. high temperatures or stresses), generally are formulated with complex microsuuctures. Such composite-like materials can possess properties unobtainable by either of the individual constituents. With metal-ceramic composites, for example, a material can be obtained with an optimum combination of the low density and high strength of the ceramic, and the toughness of the metal. For high temperature service, where demanding conditions are often present, for example, inside jet turbine engines, a successful new material must have low density, high Young's modulus as well as good oxidation resistance, strength, fracture toughness, creep and fatigue resistance. The candidates include intermetallic compounds, and metal-ceramic, intermetallic-ceramic and ceramic-ceramic composites."

For compliance with the Hazard Communication Standard and other federal and state regulations, numerous minerals, chemicals and products need to be evaluated for crystalline silica content at a threshold of 0.1 %. The polymorphs of crystalline silica that can occur in chemical and mineral products are quartz, cristobalite and tridymite. Other natural, industrial and synthetic amorphous silicas and hydrates must be distinguished from these polymorphs to prevent over-regulation in the workplace and environment. A number of industrial silica products are composed of glasses, expanded perlite, diatomite, slags, and precipitated and fumed silica products. Amorphous silica hydrates used for industrial products, include opal (hydrated silica of biogenic or inorganic origin), perlite, pumice and tuffs. In addition, crystalline and amorphous silicate minerals and chemicals, abundant in nature and industrial products, must be distinguished from the polymorphs of crystalline silica.

Large tonnages of the manganese ores found in Aroostook County, Maine, are refractory to conventional mineral-dressing techniques and to the common chemical- extraction procedures. The Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain ores are typical of this type. Because the most promising method of recovering the manganese from these ores has been a chloridizing roast in which the ground ore is in contact with gaseous hydrogen chloride, preliminary batch tests were made with a fluidized bed. On the basis of these tests, it was concluded that fluidization, with careful control of operating conditions, could be employed for this cloridization and warrants further study. Selective volatilization of the iron at 600° C. was unsuccessful. An operating temperature of approximately 950° C. was necessary for a practicable rate of volatilization of manganese chloride. Hydrogen chloride contents of 10 to 100 percent of the fluidized gas gave essentially equivalent manganese recoveries with an 80- minute retention time, For shorter periods reaction was more complete with the higher hydrogen chloride concentrations. At the 80-minute retention period the lower hydrogen chloride concentrations volatilized somewhat less iron and also improved the physical operation of the process. Fluidization gave results superior to comparable tests on chloridization in a fixed bed.

Traditionally, characterisation of the mineralogy and textures of ore and rock samples were based on observations of hand specimens and thin sections using an optical microscope. The extent of the data collection was limited by the available tools and thus variations in mineralogy and texture were generally not described by quantitative data. These qualitative to semi-quantitative approaches, even though well established over the years, resulted in variable observations and data sets. The data were unlikely to be representative of a sample and limited statistical validity meant the results could not be reliably used in modern digital mining design and planning. With recently developed SEM based quantitative mineralogy tools and the corresponding methodologies, ore textures can be quantified and compared numerically. The numerical data can not only enhance the understanding of an orebody in geological terms, but can also be used in the creation of metallurgical models for mine and mineral processing design and simulation. These capabilities provide valuable inputs to risk assessment studies and the evaluation of mineral projects.

THIS paper describes results obtained on aluminum-beryllium alloys and aluminum-beryllium-copper alloys in the preparation of which aluminum of 99.95 per cent. purity was used. The constitution and structure of the high purity binary alloys are given. The aluminum-beryllium eutectic occurs at 0.87 per cent. beryllium and 645° C. The solid solubility of beryllium in aluminum at 631° C. is 0.05 per cent. beryllium, and at room temperature is less than 0.013 per cent. beryllium. The densities of the alloys are substantially the same as the values calculated on the assumption that the densities of the elements are not changed by alloying. All of the alloys age-harden at room temperature after a solution heat treatment, and the chill cast aluminum-beryllium-copper alloys age-harden at room temperature without a prior solution heat treatment. Hardness and tensile properties are given. Salt spray corrosion tests on sheet specimens are described. It is shown that beryllium does not lower the corrosion resistance of aluminum to salt spray provided the alloy has received a solution heat treatment. COMMERCIAL POSSIBILITIES OF BERYLLIUM ALLOYS Beryllium has certain properties such as low density, high hardness, good corrosion resistance, low thermal expansion and fairly good electrical conductivity, which would indicate that it is worthy of consideration as an ingredient of light alloys. It was not until recently, however, that beryllium could be produced with sufficient ease to encourage research along this line. The production of beryllium by electrolysis from a fluoride bath has now developed to the stage where it could be used commercially if there were sufficient demand for the element. Claims made in certain newspapers and technical articles in regard to the strength and corrosion resistance of the aluminum-beryllium alloys are not justified by experimental results. Moreover, beryllium is an expensive metal ($200 a pound at the time this work was done) and, on account of the nature of its ore and the consequent difficulty of its extraction, it will in all probability continue to be a relatively expensive metal, although the cost would undoubtedly be a great deal less than $200 a

Finalmente, no existe interferencia por el manganeso, fluor o níquel, pues el cromo solo interfiere cuando se encuentra en cantidades mayores a su máxima concentración permisible (O. l mg).

The Goodfellow Expert Furnace System Optimization Process (Goodfellow EFSOP?) is a proprietary process that uses real-time and continuous off-gas analysis, along with process monitoring to optimize the operation of electric arc furnaces (EAF) for steelmaking. With the exception of off-gas composition, dynamic process measurements within the EAF are not possible due to the harsh operating environment. The Goodfellow EFSOP? system provides a dynamic indication of the operating conditions within the EAF. Continuous measurement of furnace off-gas composition, along with other furnace operating parameters is used to elucidate the fate of chemical energy usage within the EAF including: the evolution of carbon from the molten steel bath; the in-leakage of air into the furnace; the extent of combustion above the molten steel bath and the occurrence of dangerous water-leaks from the furnace cooling system. The ability to measure the process reliably and continuously enables Techint Goodfellow Technologies Inc (TGTI) to implement dynamic process control of combustion within the electric arc furnace and to optimize the overall operation through adjustments to the EAF process based on off-gas measurement. This paper discusses the methodology and results achieved from several recent Goodfellow EFSOP? installations in South East Asia.

A simple graphical method is presented for the determination of climb forces on dislocations exerted by uniaxial stresses. In conjunction with standard stereographic projections, the technique is applicable for any crystal system. Climb forces on glide dislocations in bcc crystals are determined as an application. In connection with a study1 of elevated temperature creep of molybdenum single crystals, a detailed analysis of the climb force on a dislocation was necessary. In general, such forces can be calculated for an arbitrary dislocation segment from the Peach-Koehler equation2 (or one of its variants3"6) where Fk are the components of the force per unit length of dislocation line, ?i of the unit sense vector tangent to the line, ojl of the stress tensor, bl of the dislocation Burgers vector, and is the Einstein permutation operator with components ?123 = ?231 = ?321 = —?132 = — ?321 = —?—213 = unity, and all other components zero. It is understood in the suffix notation of Eq. [I.] that repeated indices are to be summed over 1, 2, and 3. For the most general coordinate system, the matrix manipulations required to solve Eq. [I] are fairly complex. However, a simplification can be achieved by specifying a coordinate system based on the dislocation in question. The pertinent system involves cartesian coordinates xi, x;, xi, with attendant unit vectors e'i; ei being parallel to the Burgers vector b, and e'3; being parallel to the climb directions (b x ?), i.e., normal to the slip plane. In this coordnate system b = (bi, 0, 0) and ? = (?'1,?'2, 0). Hence, Eq. [I] yields for the climb force per unit length F3 = ?'2s'11b'1—?'1s'12b'1 [2] The first term on the right side of Eq. [2] is the climb force on the edge component of the dislocation, while the second is the (cross-slip) force normal to the glide plane acting on the screw component. Thus, the problem of determining the climb force reduces to that of resolving the stress components —il and s'12 in the xi coordinate system. Several authors7- l0 have shown, for the glide case, that such stress resolution can be performed most readily by graphical methods. Therefore, we present a similar method for the climb case. Of the suggested methods, we follow that of Hartley and Hirth,9 which can be performed directly with a standard stereographic projection for the crystal system in question. We treat the case of simple tension, or compression, this being the most common creep test in which climb is important. A set of cartesian coordinates (x1, x2, x3) is fixed with x3 parallel to the specimen axis. This set is connected to the x'i set by the factors defined in Table I. A perspective view of the coordinate systems relating them to the glide ellipse, is given in Fig. 1, while a stereographic projection of the coordinate systems is presented in Fig. 2. This report describes aperiments by the Bureau of Mines and reviews theoretical aspects of the use of organophosphate solvent extraction for recovering beryllium from sulfate leach liquors. The leach liquors were prepared by sulfuric acid leaching of lime-sintered low-tenor beryl flotation concentrates. The experimental work on sulfate leach liquors showed that the acidic esters of organophosphates extracted beryllium slowly but in preference to aluminum. Three common alkylphosphoric acids, di- (2-ethylhexyl) (EHPA), heptadecyl (HDPA), and dodecyl (DDPA), in order of decrmsing selectivity, yielded a partial separation of beryllium from aluminum.

[Notwithstanding the fact that it is now fairly generally recognized that widespread explosions can be almost absolutely prevented in coal mines by efficient rock-dusting and that this rock-dusting can be done thoroughly at a cost which should seldom exceed 1 cent per ton of coal mined, a recent survey of the situation by the Safety Division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, following a similar survey by the Bureau in the fall of 1925, shows that while some progress is being made by our coal-mining people, many entire mining communities are lamentably slow in taking advantage of one of the most effective safeguards available. Much of the information as to the extent of rock-dusting was obtained through the various State inspection departments. Table 1 shows that in the fall of 1925 about 92 coal companies in the United States were using rock-dust ad that in the summer of 1927 the number had increased to 239, or about 160 per cent increase. Similarly, from the fall of 1925 to the summer of 1927 the number of mines using rock-dust increased from 177 to 463, or about 160 per cent increase. This appears to be a decidedly healthy increase, but when it is considered that in 1926 (the last date for which figures are available) there were 7,141 bituminous mines operating and that there were only 463 or 61 par cent, which were even reported to Ice using rock-dust to any extent whatever, the forgoing figures as to progress are by no means impressive or even satisfactory.]

HIGH ACTIVITY, continuing the substantial recovery from the slump of 1954, characterized the domestic nonfuels-mining industries during 1956 Income generated in producing nonfuel minerals and mineral products3 increased 9 percent over 1955 as compared with a 6-percent increase for all industries. Thus, the 1956 performance of the mineral industries, while not as dramatic as the 27-percent increase obtained in 1955, continued to exceed the gains of the total economy. Other measures of mineral activity strengthen this conclusion. The index of physical volume of mineral production, presented for the first time as an integral part of this review, reflects significant gains in all major sectors during 1956; and, although the overall increase was diminished somewhat by the steel and iron-ore strike in July 1956, the all-mineral index (including fuels) reached a new high.
