"El objetivo del presente texto es describir las características del lavado del carbón bruto producido actualmente en La Galgada, Ancash. Para ello, se revisa el registro y la comparación comparación de datos de prueba realizados entre 1945-1955. Desafortunadamente no se tuvo información de los lugares de trabajo para la selección de muestras, por lo cual no se las considera representativas de la producción obtenida en una operación a gran escala. Empero, los datos de las muestras en conjunto permiten una mayor índice de representación, y muestran la fluctuación en consumo que una nueva planta tendría que ser capazde manejar. Asimismo, se sugiere que dentro del diseño de plantas definitivas, el diagrama de tratamiento, indica un plan que pudiera ser adoptado ventajosamente, si surge el caso de que el carbón de Ancos y La Galgada sea empleado principalmente para la producción de combustible para altos hornos. En este caso, se supone que la planta lavadora estaría situada en Chimbote, como parte integrante del horno de coke y planta de sub-producción, y que el lavado daría un producto uniforme de no más de 10% de contenido de cenizas. Esto es solo una solución posible, que ofrece grandes posibilidades en la actualidad, en vista de los planes corrientes para una expansión eventual de la industria del acero, basada en el funcionamiento convencional de altos hornos que utilizan un combustible fabricado a base de antracita."

In this, the first systematic study of the oxidation of orpiment (As2S3) in sulfuric acid solution under oxygen pressure at temperatures above 170°C, the effects of retention time, temperature, particle size, oxygen partial pressure, the concentration of sulfuric acid and pulp density were evaluated. The effects of cupric and ferric ions on the oxidation rate of As(III) to As(V) were also examined. The products of oxidation are As(III), As(V), SO42- and elemental sulfur. At temperatures ranging from 170 to 230°C, most of the arsenic was found to be in the trivalent state, and oxidation to As(V) with oxygen was very slow. This was confirmed by attempting to oxidize a synthetic arsenious solution. However, the rate of oxidation of As(III) to As(V) is rapid in the presence of ferric ion. Elemental sulfur was found at all temperatures investigated, which can be further oxidized to sulfate at high temperature.

Entrainment is a process by which fine and ultrafine particles are transferred to the flotation froth from the top of the flotation pulp, and eventually discharge to the concentrate product, evenwhen they are not attached to gas bubbles. Therefore, entrainment can be considered as a two-step process, one at the upper layer of the pulp to the flotation froth, and the other from froth to the concentrate. Entrainment is inevitable for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic minerals and is one of the significant factors affecting concentrate grade. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the entrainment mechanisms and entrainment models, as well as a summary of the main factors affecting entrainment and the techniques thatmay be used to lower or eliminate entrainment. Based on the review, we point out that selective aggregation of fine and ultrafine gangue minerals using appropriate process aids (polymeric depressants, inorganic salts, etc.) to increase their particle sizes appears to be a convenient and economical method. Directions of further research along this line are discussed.

Drilling mud rheological and gel property changes due to elevated temperatures frequently cause problems in drilling deep wells. A laboratory investigation of the effects of time, temperatures up to 3001; and mud composition on these properties was made with concentric-cylinder, rotational viscometers of the Farm type. The viscometers were sealed from the atmosphere to prevent dehydration of the sample. Gel strengths were found to be more sensitive than viscosities to changes in temperature and mud cornposition. The high-temperature gel strengths of bentonitic clay drilling fluids were not predictable from low-temper.atl4t-e measurements. At high temperatures, [lie clay flocculates. The floccu-lation temperature depends on the concentration and type of solids in the mud and the degree of chemical defloccula-tion. As the bentonite content of a mud increases, floccrrla-tion temperature decreases. Lignosulfonnte treatment raises the flocculation temperature. To minimize adverse high-temperatrrre effects on mud properties, the mud should be maintainted at minimum solids content, properly treated with. a defloccullant which is stable at the maximum ten?perature encountered and maintained at a pH high enough to insure activation of the deflocculant for the duration required. The Methylene Blue Test for cation exchange cnpacity of a clay was found to be a useful guide in deter.niinirig when a mud contains a dangerously high clay conWnt. INTRODUCTION In drilling a well it is desirable, for several reasons, to know the effects of time and temperature on the rheological and gel properties of the drilling fluid in the hole. Problems associated with drilling fluids normally occur down-hole: so it is reasonable to be interested in the properties of drilling fluids at the conditions which exist down-hole. It has long been observed that high pump pressures are often needed to start circulation after a trip and that the "bottom-up" mud that is circulated back to the surface is usually more viscous than it was before "cooking" at the bottom of the hole for several hours. Burk-hardt' showed that a knowledge of rheological proper-ties of muds under down-hole conditions is necessary to predict pressure surges. He showed that the viscosity of a mud greatly influences the magnitude of pressure surges and the likelihood of lost returns. McLean et aL~ showed that the rheological properties of a mud under down-hole conditions are very important to cementing operations. This paper presents data showing the effects of time and temperature on rheological and gel properties of water-base drilling fluids. Measurements of gel strengths and rheological properties were made with two different concentric-cylinder rotational viscometers of the Fann type. One was the conventional six-speed viscometer modified to operate at temperatures up to 350F and at the vapor pressure of the liquid at test temperature. The other viscometer was newly designed to operate at temperatures up to 500F and pressures up to 1,000 psi. Tests with both instruments were made under essentially the same operating conditions. The new viscometer is shown in Fig. I. "A new eutectic LiN03-NaN03-KN03-KN02 quaternary molten salt system was calculated using thermodynamic modeling. The eutectic temperature was predicted to be 100°C. The melting point and heat capacity of the salt eutectic composition were determined using DSC. The experimentally determined melting point is in excellent agreement with the predicted value. The melting point is more than 124°C lower than that of the KN03-NaN03 solar salt. The density of the molten salt was experimentally determined as function of temperature. Using the density, heat capacity and the melting point, thermal energy storage density and gravimetric storage density of the quaternary molten salt were calculated and compared with that of solar salt. The larger storage density value of this molten salt indicates that this salt has a better energy storage capacity for solar power generation systems.IntroductionMolten salts have been used as thermal energy storage media for solar energy applications. Nitrates are being used in the solar energy applications for their low melting point, low unit cost, high heat capacity, high thermal stability, negligible vapor pressure and high energy storage density [l]. Solar salt (NaN03/KN03: 60/40) is the most popular thermal energy storage medium which is currently being used with the freezing point of 221 ·c [2]; another ternary system HITEC® which contains NaN03, KN03 and NaN02 has freezing point of 141°C [3]. Newer nitrate salt mixtures are being studied and projected as potential candidates for thermal energy storage (TES) and heat transfer (HT) applications. Based on these favorable features, molten salt can work directly as the energy storage medium below 500°C [l]. Development and synthesis of newer molten salt mixtures with freezing point lower than those currently used for thermal energy storage applications is necessary for sustained utilization of solar energy. The approach to develop lower freezing point molten salt mixtures is by the prediction of new eutectic mixtures and also by the development of new nitrate compounds."

During the investigations of the occurrence of manganese in the Western United States, a Bureau of Mines examining engineer collected samples frame two properties in Beaver County, Utah. As the ores were too low in grade to be acceptable by manufacturers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. The Steelville property is about 37 miles southwest of Frisco, Utah. The deposit is an example of manganese occurring as a replacement of limestone in a bedded vein or as layers in limestone associated with shale and rock decomposition products. The Susie Q deposit, about 33 miles southwest of Milford, Utah, is also a tabular replacement deposit in limestone, apparently of limited extent. Test work was done on representative samples of 2-ton lots obtained by the examining 'engineer from each of the properties mentioned.

The adsorption process of Pb2+ from aqueous solutions by spent grains modified with Imol/L NaCI solution was investigated. The effects of solution pH, contact time, adsorbent concentration, initial Pb2+ concentration, particle size on Pb2+removal were also studied. The initial adsorption process was rapid and 90.35% of Pb2+ adsorption occurred within 30 min. The absorption equilibrium was obtained at 4h. When pH was 5.5, Pb2+ concentration in aqueous solutions decreased from the initial content of 20 mg/L to 0.0 I mg/L after 5 hours by application of IOg/L adsorbent at 25?C, Pb2+ removal efficiency reached up to 99.95% and the Pb2+ remaining in aqueous solutions was under China Sanitary Standard for Drinking Water (GB5749-85). Adsorption data fitted well with Lanf+muir and Freundlich models. However,Langmuir isotherm model was better to descnbe Pb- adsorplion than Freundhch model, mdlcatmg that the applicability of monolayer coverage of Pb2+ on the surface of adsorbent.

Shales and clays from Illinois were sampled, tested, and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregate by rotary-kiln methods. Sampling procedures and the 1 ,,,y of the Pennsylvanian shale units are discussed. Chemical, X-ray spectrographic and X-ray petrographic analyses were run on the samples to determine if a correlation existed between chemical mineralogic composition and expansion. Preliminary expansion testing was conducted in a muffle furnace. Rotary-kiln tests were conducted in a 16- inch by 14-foot rotary kiln. The weight of the aggregate ranged from 27 to 59 pounds per cubic foot. Concrete cubes employing the aggregate were tested to determine the qualities of the concrete. Compressive strength of the concrete using the 7-bag of cement cement per cubic yard mix, after autoclave curing for 6 hours, ranged from 2,950 to 6,750 psi. No correlation was found between the chemical, X-ray spectrographic, and X-ray and petrographic analyses and expansion, Sixteen samples made suitable lightweight aggregates in the laboratory rotary kiln. The expansion temperature range of eight of the samples was extremely narrow, and difficulties would probably be encountered in processing these materials commercially.

The today status of air pollution control legislation and regulations can best be described as an exaggerated state of environmental limbo. The '70's began but one and one-half months ago yet it already has been very appropriately named "the decade of the environment." This certainly will be the decade for new legislation - new regulations and hopefully "Clean Air." Already Washington is faced with legislators playing "pollution politics" to the crowds. Students have redirected their efforts from Vietnam to the cleansing of the environment and everyone including the man on the street has become an environ¬mental expert. This is the decade we all face, but where are we today? Pollution is not a new problem. It has been with us for centuries and while much is left to be done, much has already been accomplished. I will try to make some comparisons of what I believe to be the good and bad points in the national air pollution control picture and hopefully will generate within each of you sufficient concern as to which comparisons are sound.

Hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) exposure is associated with various health risks for operators of mobile mining equipment (MME). The case–control research was conducted to determine the musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risks associated with exposure to HTVs in the exposed (case) and non-exposed (control) groups. HTV readings were measured at the interface between the hand and the steering device using the SV 105B triaxial hand accelerometer connected to the SV106 human vibration analyzer involving 40 MME operators in accordance with ISO 5349:2001 guidelines. A questionnaire survey was also carried out among both the study groups using Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire. The European Union's 2002/44/E.C. was used to assess the health risks posed to the MME operators. Twenty-eight out of the 40 MMEs were generating HTVs exceeding the stipulated daily limits of vibration, putting 70% of the operators at increased risk for developing MSDs. The case group was found to have an elevated risk of exposure with odds ratio (OR) 7.56 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.159, 49.39) and OR 12.80 (95% CI, 2.436, 67.285) times more likely than the control group to suffer discomfort in the left shoulder and left wrist, respectively, indicating increased risk of exposure to HTV. Additionally, cases had elevated risk associated with exposure to tobacco, OR 9.35(95% CI, 1.856, 47.129) compared to those who did not use tobacco. MSDs were more prevalent in the case group compared to the control group. This observation was validated by the field investigations and the responses of MME operators to the questionnaires.

The behaviour of sphalerite during mineral beneficiation of base metal ores has been studied at CANMET and other institutes for at least 15 years by determining the liberations of sphalerite in mill products and calculating the recoveries of liberated and unliberated sphalerite in zinc concentrates. Sphalerite in base metal ores commonly occurs as layers and as interstitial material between pyrite. Layered sphalerite is generally liberated during primary grinding, but interstitial sphalerite requires re-grinding to achieve liberation. Around 95% of liberated sphalerite is generally recovered in zinc concentrates frau zinc circuit feeds. A series of tests was conducted on sphalerite in the ore of Brunswick Mining and smelting during a continuous fine tuning operation of the concentrator. It was found that a grind of 80% minus 37 micrometres was required to liberate the interstitial sphalerite. The fine grind increased Zn recoveries from 75% to 78-80%, but produced liberated slimed sphalerite which was lost. Since regrinding to a fine grain size is needed to obtain the desired sphalerite liberation, a method of recovering the slimed sphalerite is required.

"Using a parameter representing the degree of hydration of particles in a liquid called hydration index I, which we derived based on Einstein’s viscosity equation, we evaluated the degree of hydration of fine montmorillonite particles in different aqueous solutions by measuring the viscosities of the montmorillonite dispersions and plotting relative viscosity against volume fraction of dry montmorillonite particles in the dispersions. We investigated the effects on the hydration of montmorillonite in aqueous solutions of (1) the type and (2) the concentration of electrolytes in the solutions and (3) pH. For the same concentration of electrolytes, the hydration index I of montmorillonite was found to increase in the order of Na+ > K+ for monovalent cations and Mg2+ > Ca2+ for divalent cations, and to decrease with increasing valence of cations in the order of Na+ > Ca2+ > Al3+. For both Na+ and Ca2+, the hydration index I first increased with increasing concentration of electrolytes and then decreased after a certain concentration. The hydration index I increased with increasing pH. IntroductionClay minerals have the distinctive ability to adsorb water molecules and hydrated cations in aqueous solutions, resulting in hydration on their outer surfaces and in their interlayer spaces. Many investigators (Jurinak, 1963; Anderson and Tice, 1971; Costanzo et al., 1982; Israelachvili, 1992) had found evidence of ice-like structures of water on clay minerals.This phenomenon of hydration plays an important role in the dispersion and sedimentation of clay minerals in aqueous solutions. To understand clay hydration, numerous experimental and simulation studies have been carried out since 1933, including the recent ones of Hawkins and Egelstaff (1980), Skipper et al. (1995), Karaborni et al. (1996), Salles et al. (2013) and Morrow et al. (2013). Among the factors that can influence a clay mineral’s hydration characteristics are chemical composition, type and degree of isomorphous replacement in its structure, and number and nature of associated exchangeable cations."

"In this article research on the mineralogical characteristics and beneficiation process for a copper molybdenum deposits in Heilongjiang province of China has been carried out. Chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by SCANning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) were conducted on samples. The bulk analysis results showed that: (1) Comprehensive recovery and separation of molybdenum & copper minerals was feasible by the flowsheet of first copper-molybdenum mixed flotation after grinding the ore samples to 61.88% -74µm and then separation flotation of copper and molybdenum after regrinding the Cu-Mo mixed concentrate to 83.26% -38 µm. The results highlight relationship between mineralogical characteristics of ore and comprehensive benefication method. (2) the combination of "" Sodium sulphide and sodium thioglycolate "" reagents are effective inhibitors of copper-molybdenum mixed concentrate, their selectivity performance is better than that of single reagent. Good flotation indexes were gained that might be directive experience to similar cases. KEYWORDS Mineralogical characteristics; molybdenite; chalcopyrite; flotation separation; inhibitor INTRODUCTION Copper and molybdenum metals are widely used in the field of metallurgy, aerospace, national defence, etc. Copper –molybdenum sulphide ore is an important source of copper and molybdenum metals. At present flotation is still the preferred methods to deal with the copper-molybdenum sulphide minerals (Yin, Z., Sun, W.et al. 2017; Ansari, A., & Pawlik, M. 2007; Hirajima, T., Miki, et al. 2017). Copper and molybdenum sulphide ores usually have the similarly good nature floatability(Miki, H., Matsuoka, et al. 2017), meanwhile most molybdenum sulphide ore has tiny grained-size(Castro, S., & Laskowski, J. S. 2015.) and closed relationship with other sulphide and gangue minerals which result in the coper and molybdenum separation problem. Base on the nature of the ore and flotation properties of the individual minerals contained in the ore, there are two methods are usually used to deal with the copper – molybdenum ore, including bulk molybdenum/copper flotation followed by separation of copper and molybdenum minerals, sequential molybdenum/ copper flotation(Liu, G. Y., Lu, et al. 2012). The latter method has the shortcoming of hard to activate the depressed copper minerals in the previous molybdenum flotation process, which may result in a large loss of the copper from concentrate, this disadvantage would avoid while adopting the former method. bulk flotation followed by separation process is to get the copper-molybdenum concentrate from raw ore first then separate flotation the molybdenum and copper minerals, benefit from the excellent floatability of both molybdenum and copper minerals ( Malhotra, D., Rowe, R. M., & Bhasin, A. K. 1986; Cao, Z., Yue, et al. 2017 ), it really easy to obtain the mixed concentrate. In order to get the high quality copper and molybdenum concentrate, the key technologies and difficulties are to realize the separation of the copper and molybdenum minerals which have the very similar natural floatability (Raghavan, S., & Hsu, L. L. 2015; Nakhaei, F. 2014)."

Earnings of engineers in the period 1956 to 1958 continued the upward trend observed in the previous survey interval, 1953 to 1956. The overall median (all graduates) was $6500 in 1953, $7750 in 1956 (a 19 pct upstep or about 6.5 pct annually), and $8750 in 1958 (up 13 pct from 1956 or 6.5 pct average yearly). The latter represents an increase from mid-1956 to mid-1958. For this same two-year span the Consumer Price Index rose 1.5 pct and the Average Gross Weekly Earnings for Production (Manufacturing) climbed close to 10 pct. Median earnings for the major classifications studied are presented in Table I. The increase in engineering earnings are not distributed equally among the various activity classifications or among the experience levels of the survey. Summary results of the changes of the median lines for the major divisions are presented in Table 11. Data in this table are approximations- dollars are rounded to the nearest $50 unit and percentages to the nearest full percentage.

Iron-bearing dusts, containing valuable constituents such as Fe, CaO, MgO, C, etc., are generally utilized as raw material in iron ore sintering. However, the dusts characterized by low granulating and refractory performances always lead to negative effects on sintering indexes. As we know, the innovative process named composite agglomeration process (CAP) has a series of advantages compared to traditional sintering process (TSP). In CAP, part or all of the iron-bearing dusts is made into green pellets with 5-15mm in diameter, while the rest of iron-bearing dusts and all of the other fine ores is granulated after mixing with fuels, fluxes and return fines. Compared with TSP, CAP could increase the ratio of iron-bearing dusts from 5% to over 20%. Meanwhile, the yield, ISO tumbler index and productivity reached 75.82%, 65.13% and 1.531t·m-2·h -1, respectively.

The deformation modulus of coal mine pillars theoretically can be reduced by drilling holes in advance of the mining face. This reduction of modulus along the edge of the pillar has the effect of decreasing the stress concentration in the roof; control of roof caving is thereby predicted. Initial field work indicated that a high horizontal stress field existed at the field test site: Subsequent field work was undertaken to confirm the high horizontal stress field and to attempt to relieve the horizontal stress in the immediate roof. A method of softening pillars in conjunction with normal mining activity was developed. Instruments to measure horizontal roof strain, roof parting, roof tilt at the rib, and changes in vertical and horizontal stress in the roof and in the coal were used. These instruments were installed in both softened and unsoftened entries and in locations to indicate the effect of vertical slots in the roof. Significant stress reduction due to pillar softening was indicated, but the effect of this reduction on roof stability was not established. The vertical roof slots relieved the horizontal stress in the immediate roof very effectively, and observations of roof conditions indicated that the slots definitely improved roof stability.

This work deals with the recovery of valuable metals from the ancient copper smelting slags located in Küre-Turkey. In this process, copper and cobalt were recovered in metallic form and/or as their compounds, whereas iron was recovered as magnetic oxide or pigment. Abrasive grit material was produced using reduced final slag. The process stages involved carbothermal reduction in a DC arc furnace, granulation, leaching, chemical precipitation, selective sulfidizing roasting and product preparations. In this paper, the process stages were described as theoretically and experimentally whereas slag and products were characterized in detail.

"The first 90 years of the last century generated a considerable volume of technical literature on the subject of grinding mill power and its prediction. It is therefore surprising that during this time there were no published models for predicting grinding mill power draw which were validated using a wide range of comprehensive industrial scale data.Notwithstanding this lack of data, the majority of models placed limited emphasis on the internal dynamics of mills and relied on simple assumptions which considered the charge to take up a fixed position and shape.Laboratory based studies (Liddell, 1986), and industrial data (Morrell, 1993), showed that these assumptions did not hold over a wide range of operating conditions, and brought into doubt the ability of the (then) existing models to accurately predict grinding mill power draw. Furthermore no model treated AG,SAG and ball mills as a single class of devices whose power draw could be predicted with the same equations.Through a detailed investigation of the charge dynamics, coupled with a large data base of industrial mill power draws, this situation was rectified by the end of the century, by which time a model had been developed and validated, which accurately predicted the power draw of all wet tumbling mills. This paper describes this model and reviews some of the earlier attempts at mill power modelling."
