Although the physical appearance of excavating equipment doesn't seem to have radically changed over the past decade, important changes within the products and an innovative attitude on the part of the engineer in his design approach is becoming increasingly evident. The new philosophy is to go beyond simple refinements of existing designs that simply produce a machine which further reduces overall cost per ton or per cubic yard of material moved and to do it more efficiently than ever before. Standard ideas and preconceived notions have been discarded and have given way to providing a design and a machine that is best suited to get the job done. Understanding that the application will not always fit the machine, but, in most cases, the machine should fit or suit the application is a foremost consideration in the engineers' design criteria.

The Irwin Basin. (Fig. 1)* is a synclinal or shoe-horn *Figure numbers throughout refer to color slides not included with the preprint shaped basin in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam, It is approximately 10 miles wide and 22 miles long at its maximum points. The surface of the land above the basin is hilly, rolling farmland,, typical of this area of Pennsylvania, and it is criss-crossed with streams and highways and liberally dotted with farm houses and communities. In-general the coal is pitched from north to south with a total drop of 610 feet'. The coal seam cross-section from east to west is bowl-shaped and rises as much as 375 feet from the low point of the bowl to-the-outcrop. Cross-sections showing coal elevations are shown on Figs, 4 and 50 Ground cover above the coal will vary from 0 to 550 feet, averaging about 350 feet throughout the area. This area is richly endowed with a history of coal mining. The first car of coal shipped cast of the Allegheny Mountains was mined in the Westmoreland Coal Company's Shady Grove (later North Side) Colliery in Irwin, Pa., early in 1853, This mine was opened in 1852 by Coleman, Hillman & Company. The coal was hauled from the mine to the freight station by horse-drawn wagon and. loaded into a then "standard" box car of 18,000-pound capacity. Coal mining in this region flourished and grew as steel production in nearby Pittsburgh demanded more and more of the high quality, metallurgical-grade coal of the region.

Chalcopyrite concentrates and their pure constituents were chlorinated by C12+N2 between 25 °C and 750 °C. The reaction products were analyzed by SEM, XRD and chemical analysis. The effect of gas flow rate and chlorine content of the gas mixture on the reaction rate were investigated. At room temperature, these solids start to react with chlorine giving metal and sulfur chlorides. Complete reaction is achieved at about 300 °C and the iron and sulfur chlorides were fully volatilized. The chlorination residue is composed of valuable metals' chlorides. A simplified flow - sheet for the treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates by chlorine was suggested.

Flotation tests were conducted with galena, quartz and with synthetic mixtures of the two, in different ranges of grain size, and with different process parameter variants. Physico-chemical analyses were also carried out on surface energy and on xanthate adsorption on galena with different grain sizes. Reference will also be made to hydrodynamics, interfacial chemistry and the influence exerted by grain size in flotation.

The Australian underground coal mining industry is undergoing major changes. This paper analyses the technologies presently being researched in mines, and discusses their utilisation as major contributors in the underground mining of coal in Australia over the next 20 years. It describes the problems that underground mining of the year 2000 will face and the possible solutions to those problems based upon results of present day research. Methods, equipment and organisational requirements are outlined. Developments in micro-electronics, computerisation and monitoring will require a new look into human resource development, education and training, and organisation to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The mining system's philosophies of the future are Outlined.

Boring of tunnels and shafts in hard rock under high stress conditions is becoming more common as mines and tunnels are developed at greater depths. Under the high stress conditions, fracturing of the often-brittle rock occurs in the walls, backs, and ahead of advancing faces of excavations. Fracturing can have a significant impact on boring activities: sidewall spalling, which affects machine gripper capacity, and fractures can also develop in the rock ahead of the face, leading to blocky rock conditions, which may have a significant effect on machine excavation. Fracturing may develop dynamically, leading to rock bursts manifesting in the form of strain bursts, which can be hazardous and destructive. In brittle rock, fracturing is commonly extensional in nature. The focus of this paper is on fracturing in the face of the excavation. Examples of such fracturing behaviour are described briefly in the paper. Numerical analyses were carried out to predict the initiation of extension fractures and their orientations ahead of excavation surfaces, and the resulting formation of rock slabs/plates, and the stability of these plates. The results should be beneficial for the evaluation of the conditions prior to, and during boring operations.

In recent years over 100,000 persons have been killed annually in the United. States by accidents; about one-fifth of these have been workers in some of our industries; about one-third have been killed by motor vehicles; about another third have mot death in home accidents, chiefly falls, burns, scalds, explosions, poisons, asphyxiations, suffocations, cuts, scratches, and so forth; and the rest have been killed in public accidents, excluding those caused by vehicles but including accidents on railroads or electric cars, drowning, and deaths by firearms and. other means. Definite statistics on nonfatal accidents are not readily available, but at least 10,000,000 fairly serious accidents probably occur in the United States annually. The latest industrial-accident statistics are obtainable from 1935 National Safety Council publications, in which annual industrial fatalities are divided about as follows (in round numbers): Agriculture, 4,500; trade and service, 4,500; construction, 3,100; transportation and public utilities, 2,900; manufacturing, 2,600; mining, quarrying, petroleum, etc., 1,900.

Large-diameter drilled shafts (DS) are a critical part of a seismic-resistant system, and therefore it is important to be able to accurately model lateral resistance. To undertake the lateral load analysis of largediameter DS, a finite-difference p-y analysis program, NVShaft, is being developed at the University of Nevada Reno. Validation of the new program involved numerous p-y analyses using commercially available programs. Subsequent comparisons suggested the program's ability to yield reasonable predictions for typical diameter DS. Based on the I-15/US 95 load test program carried out in Las Vegas, NV, this study presents the evaluation of NVShaft in Nevada’s subsurface condition. Lateral load analyses of a 2 ft and an 8 ft diameter DS were attempted using NVShaft. The location of the applied lateral loads and the presence of cemented soil-layers were incorporated in the modeling. A good agreement between NVShaft prediction and the measured response was found for the 2 ft diameter DS. For the 8 ft diameter DS, a stiffer response was predicted. The inspections of the moment-curvature characteristics at different load levels suggested cracked response of the concrete due to prior axial load testing may be one of the reasons behind the deviation.

Fatigue-related risk is a persistent safety concern for the mining industry. However, fatigue and sleepiness are often treated interchangeably, which can lead to confusion and potentially less effective reduction of safety risk. To provide clarity, we present an overview of similarities and differences between work-related fatigue risk and sleepiness including definitions, theories, measurements, and mitigation strategies. As a supplement, a summative visual model which highlights these similarities and differences is presented. Expanding industry knowledge in this area will assist safety professionals in crafting more targeted risk management practices appropriate for work-related fatigue risk, sleepiness, or both.

"This paper describes the operations of the open pit and emphasizes particular aspects of Les Mines Selbaie. The open pit as well as its related services were incorporated into a complex which includes an underground mine and a concentrator. The equipment was chosen with the objective of auto-sufficiency during each phase of mining. The paper outlines the organization and the methods used in each step of mining, notably: drilling, blasting, loading, transporting and crushing. The responsibilities of the Engineering Department are also outlined from the conception of the open pit to the latest follow-up methods. A short resume of the results which have been obtained as well as suggestions for improvement are provided.Layout in Consideration of Main SiteThe A-I zone deposit is located I km from 8 zone. Open pit mining of A-I zone required the regrouping of different services to those already existing.I. The crusher was placed in an area close to the concentrator in order to minimize the length of the conveyors and to provide space for the crushed ore reserves (50000 tonnes).2. The location of the service building (warehouses, mine offices, maintenance, engineering and geology) raised a few problems. Because of the multiple services provided therein , it was impossible to fulfill all the requirements, and the garage in itself is located a fair distance from the pit. Added to this inconvenience is the fact that heavy equipment regularly travels throughout the main yard.3. The storage of explosive magazines has been changed to obtain more surface space and meet government regulations.4. A space has been provided for minor repairs in the garage used during exploration. A trailer was installed next to the garage to provide a lunch room for the employees working at the open pit."

The concentrator of the Iron Ore Company of Canada consists of spiral circuits, a cone plant and a magnetics plant with regrind. The proportions of liberated and unliberated grains of iron oxides at each point throughout the concentrator were measured by image analysis, and recoveries were calculated for each particle type by the MATBAL materials balancing program. The results show that spirals and cones recover more than 92% of the liberated iron oxide grains in the size range of 848 to 150 um,, but the recovery drops off rapidly for finer grained particles. The tailings from the spirals and cones are reground and low intensity magnetic separators are used to recover liberated magnetite in the -37.5 um size range. The concentrator does not have a unit that efficiently recovers iron oxide grains in the size range of 150 to 37.5 um Consequently about 25% of the iron oxides in the ore are lost to tailings as liberated. grains in the size range of 150 to 37.5 um

Simulations of complex physical phenomena, such as hurricanes and fluid flow around space vehicles, can now be effectively explored using modem visualisation techniques which have been developed to examine the results of numerical modelling using supercomputers. These techniques are also being applied extensively in medical investigations, including viewing the interior of the human brain. We have now applied these same techniques to the visualisation of gold deposits.Grade control in open pit gold mining operations may involve the collection of at least half a million samples in each mine. Extensive drilling programs also accompany the early reserve evaluation stages and exploration in advance of mining. Maximum utilisation of these very large amounts of information requires an ability to integrate, examine and present large three-dimensional data sets in order to be able to derive and effectively communicate information on grade distribution and geological controls.

(communication to the Secretary*):—For some time before the publication of Mr. Scholz's paper, I had been collecting data bearing upon its subject, and I now take pleasure in presenting to the Institute my results in the form of a discussion. It has long been a matter of common opinion among mining-men that mine-explosions are more frequent during the colder, or winter months, than during the warmer ones, and it is a matter of common knowledge among them that the air-ways and road-ways in most mines are much drier and are more inclined to be dusty during the winter than during the summer. In many mines, places which are wet and sloppy in the summer are dry and sometimes dusty during the winter. These changes, of course, can only be due to atmospheric conditions, and are caused by differences in temperature and humidity. Until recently, however, very little attention has been paid to the part that atmospheric conditions may play in mine-explosions, or, rather, to the effect they may have in rendering mine-conditions peculiarly dangerous, and in spreading and rendering more disastrous the effects of what otherwise probably would have been small explosions. To show the difference in mine-conditions during summer and winter months, I have tabulated in Table I. the results of 24 observations of hygrometric conditions in several different mines at different times of the year. Mines Nos. 1, 2, and 6 are located in the Pocahontas coal-region, in McDowell county,w.Va., the first one being a shaft-mine and the others drift. Mines 1A and 2A are drift-mines located in Logan county, W. Va. All of these are mines of fair size, but none of them has been in operation more than six years,

The tailing retreatment project rated at 10 000 t/day commenced operations in October 1982. The operation consists of dredging, feed preparation, cyanide leaching and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery followed by Zadra atmospheric stripping and electrowinning. For the first two years the operation was adversely affected by excessive cyanide consumption and low gold extraction. Investigations demonstrated that the very fine, or slime, fraction of the tailing was the dominant consumer of cyanide and dissolved oxygen. The plant flowsheet was subsequently modified by inclusion of 80 - 100 mm dia. cyclones for slimes separation and a 31 m dia. thickener for water recovery. Treatment of deslimed feed in the CIP plant has reduced sodium cyanide consumption from an average 1.85 kg/t to 1.15 kg/t. The reduced oxygen consumption by the CIP plant feed has resulted in higher dissolved oxygen levels, frequently reaching supersaturation after 4 to 5 h contact time. This has allowed much improved gold extraction from the existing CIP plant capacity. Gold extraction from the mixed pyritic siliceous tailing has improved from an average U prior to desliming to a current 57%. Investigations are continuing on the recovery of gold from the discarded slimes.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines monitored rock mass response to mining of an experimental underhand longwall stope in Hecla Mining Co.'s LUCKY Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. This stope design, the Lucky Friday underhand longwall (LFUL), was proposed as a means of controlling rock bursting while also allowing increased mechanization of mining operations. Instruments were specifically manufactured to monitor three geomechanical factors (backfill performance, ramp stability, and rock mass response) that directly affect the success of stope design. Despite considerable difficulties with instrument installation and survival in the harsh mine environment, especially within the stope fill, sufficient information was collected to suggest that the LFUL method was successful in achieving project goals. This conclusion, in addition to favorable economic and operational evidence, led the mine to adopt the method throughout the mine. Indeed, this study and mining experience suggest that underhand longwall mining could be considered a feasible mining method for rock-burst-prone ground throughout the Coeur d'Alene District. Further Reports of Investigations (RI) in this series present in-depth analyses of the effects of backfill on rock bursting and calibration of a stope numerical model.

This research aimed to develop a clean technology for the production of ZnO from residues generated by the steel making industry. Scientific and technologic parameters were both investigated in order to define an industrial methodology allowing the integral recycling of EAF dusts. A reengineering of the Waelz process was perform,~d, aiming to produce a clean fraction of ZnO, fluorine free, as well as a slag enriched in metallic iron, which can be recycled in electric arc furnaces. The technical conditions used to produce the ultra pure fraction of ZnO are described. The magnetic separation of the EAF dust allowing the production of a phase high in iron and recyclable to the electric arc furnace is also discussed. Thermodynamic of the volatilization of all the elements contained in the EAF dust was performed in order to better control the thermal process in the rotary kiln. Tests were run using different reducing agents, weakly or highly reactive, aiming to determine their specific efficiency.

In 1926 Gendersl reviewed the existing theories of this subject and stated his views in support of the gas-pressure theory. Again, in 1937, the subject was thoroughly reviewed by N. B. Vaughan3 and by Phillips and Brick,2 so that no résumé is called for here. The purpose of this paper is to describe certain observations made in the course of mill work, and to point out that they mostly tend to confirm the gas theory of Genders. Vapor Segregation There is, however, one type of inverse segregation that can be accounted for by considering the volatility of one of the constituents of an alloy. The most familiar case is ordinary brass, which is subject to a zinc enrichment of a few tenths of a per cent at the surface of a chill casting. This has been noted in 70-30 brass by Genders, and a typical example of it is given in Table 1, which represents a cylindrical billet 7 in. in diameter by 55 in. long. After lathe-turning 1/32 in. from the surface, the remaining distance to the center was sampled at six equally spaced intervals. the lead, which is essentially the same throughout, will be mentioned later. Consider a brass-mill mold, either round or rectangular in cross section, standing several feet high. It may require a minute or two for pouring. Before it is full, the metal in the lower end has partly solidified and contracted somewhat away from the mold. The initial shell of solidification follows not far behind the top of the column, even if the central portion is liquid for a long way down. There is, then, a space between metal and mold that is filled with zinc vapor. The vapor has no exit, because the liquid at the top of the rising column is not only in contact with the mold but keeps UP a fresh supply of zinc vapor, which has, perhaps, already begun to condense in the lower portion. The cycle is short. Within a minute or two after the mold is full the bar has cooled enough to condense all the zinc. Some of it may condense on the mold; it might be expected that most of it would condense there, but the mold at that time is well coated with a velvety carbon residue from the oil dressing, overlain by fluffy zinc oxide that commenced covering the inside of the mold as soon as pouring began. The clean skin of the freshly cast brass offers a preferred surface for condensation. Reabsorption is quick and inevitable. The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Ltd. at Trail, B. C., inaugurated a comprehensive program of investigation about 15 years ago to develop the most economical process of recovering the metal in the large accumulated stock of by-products of the lead smelter and the zinc plant. Two principal methods of recovery were followed to a successful conclusion—an electrothermic process to treat zinc-plant residues and cold slag and the fuming of hot slag from the lead blast furnaces. The latter was selected because it showed a saving over the former in its ability to handle hot blast-furnace slag, thus obviating the necessity of granulating, handling and eventually remelting the same slag for the electrothermic process. The design of a fuming plant was commenced in 1928, and construction, which was started immediately, was completed in July 1030. Operating intermittently for a general tuning up, the plant was officially blown in for regular operation in August. During this month the vagaries of a slag-fuming plant were studied and an operating crew was trained. A history of slag fuming at Trail and the development of plant design is given in a paper by G. E. Murray in the Transactions of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for 1933. Fuming Plant The fuming plant at Trail (Fig. 1) is a separate unit although of necessity interlocked closely with the lead smelter. The plant consists essentially of a fuming furnace with its accessories, a waste-heat boiler followed by an economizer, and a suction-type baghouse. The plant was built as the first of two 400-ton units with the intention of adding the second unit within a year, so that flues, fans and buildings were built to handle double the original load. Furnace.—The furnace as originally built (Fig. 2) was of water-jacket construction, 10 ft. wide, 20 ft. long and 6 to 10 ft. high. The roof height was made variable to check experimental work, which had indicated that this dimension affected the rate of reduction. Coal and air were supplied
