The iron ore industry presently utilizes two types of de-posits. The first are the high grade deposits generally located in remote areas and, secondly, the low grade de-posits which are normally found nearer to the steel-making centers. The high grade deposits produce a direct shipping ore which has an iron content which may be close to the maxi-mum 70% of Fe. These deposits have reserves which are ex-pressed in billions of tons. The ore needs little or no up-grading and where this is performed is restricted to ore washing. With the large demand for iron ore pellets, plus a national drive to perform as much of the upgrading as possible in the native country, there is a trend to erecting pellet plants at the mine location~ Large iron ore suppliers such as Australia, Brazil, Venezuela and Liberia already have pellet plants in operation, and there are new plants projected or expansion projects under study. The low grade ores are mined at locations closer to steel mills such as in Minnesota, Michigan and Canada. These low grade ores require methods of beneficiation to obtain a commercially accept-able product with the modern beneficiation techniques it is no~, possible to produce iron ore pellets of 68% Fe and 4.5% silica from ores containing as low as 26% Fe. Figure 1 gives a general picture of the types of iron ores and their beneficiation. The final product of the high grade ore is a coarse concentrate, sinter product or pellets. The final product of the low grade ores is pellets and, in some cases, coarse concentrates.

Zinc alloy castings continue to account for a very large, world-wide end-use market for zinc. However, an ever expanding multitude of other materials and processes are increasingly providing viable, cost-effective alternatives to designers, many of whom have no particular allegiance to any one industry. In order to meet this challenge, innovation of and for the zinc hot chamber pressure die casting process, in concert with sustained and inventive market development, is clearly required. While 'Quality' is now the watchword, and the goal of zero defects is being rigorously pursued, other important goals which must be addressed include net shape casting, enhanced productivity and increased energy efficiency. The paper gives an overview of several practical, process-orientated, projects designed to help achieve these goals. For example, a project designed to understand and precisely measure dimensional changes of castings with time has provided some of the critical information needed for net shape casting. A second study is looking anew at surface quality in relation to process conditions as an important step toward the goals of zero scrap rate and increased productivity. Developing the correct die casting machine parameters for achieving optimal quality and properties of zinc (ZA) die castings is a further example of research designed to benefit both the die caster and his customer, chiefly the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). A project on die soldering or galvanising in response to varying process parameters is similarly being considered in order to foster increased understanding and avoidance of problems, with a special interest in the use of special coatings. The maintenance or expansion of the future market for zinc die casting alloys also depends on design for functional applications, as an adjunct to their traditional decorative use. The role that alloys with enhanced properties can play, such as ZATEC, a new high creep resistant alloy developed specifically for elevated stress/elevated temperature applications, will be briefly discussed.

The Bottle Creek mine, when opened next month, will consist of three open cuts, Emu, VB and Boags, feeding ore to a central mill. The open cuts cover a strike length of 4.5 kilometres which forms part of a linear structure, which can be traced geochemically for 26.0 kilometres. With the exception of a few small gossanous outcrops at Emu, the deposits are completely covered with insitu laterite and alluvial overburden. Since its discovery in 1984, the deposit has been subjected to three major reverse circulation (RC) drilling programmes which have successively closed up the drill spacing on the main mineralized zone to 25m horizontally and less than 25m vertically. All resource calculations have been based primarily on samples of RC drill cuttings from these programmes. Ore reserve calculations have been completed after each drilling phase. They began with a simple polygonal technique, progressed through two sectional half-distance calculations and are now being completed with a 3-D geostatistical technique. Because of the style of mineralization, Norgold personnel paid particular attention to assessing the variability of the mineralization by using repeat samples, repeat analysis and diamond drill vs RC comparisons. In addition, close attention has been paid to obtaining an accurate estimate of the global SG of the ore bodies. Particular care has been taken to obtain complete drill intersections of the orebody and to maximize wet sample recoveries. Extensive re-sampling and re-analysis of samples has confirmed that Bottle Creek is unusual for an oxidized gold deposit in that all the gold appears to be very fine grained, and evenly distributed within the mineralized zone.

The irregular shape of the Rosebery orebody, coupled with the inconsistencies in grade over short strike lengths, has meant stoping blocks have had to be small to combat dilution and stability problems. In the past, each lens was divided into regular block sizes and developed up to five years before production commenced. There were two major drawbacks to this practice; firstly, existing development deteriorated over time therefore requiring rehabilitation prior to production. Secondly, the pre-determined blocks could not be easily changed to incorporate changes in mining technology or economic circumstances. Bearing these problems in mind, it was evident that any new lens development had to be designed to allow maximum flexibility. The lens being currently developed is J lens. It represents approximately 50 per cent of the current reserves tonnes, and 65 per cent of the zinc metal. Its importance to the mine's future cannot be over emphasised. At its core the lens is up to 25 m thick at grades of over 30 per cent zinc. The practice of dividing the orebody into levels and sublevels, with consequent crowns was no longer acceptable because of restrictions in stope design and potential loss of ore. To assist in the development planning of J lens, a geostatistical block model was applied in long section to graphically represent the lens. Areas of high zinc concentration, as well as zones of uneconomic material were identified by using the model. This has meant that the development could he targeted, enabling stope delineation to occur in the lens without significant ore loss. Because of limited development resources, and the need to bring J lens on-line in the near future, the development strategy has had to focus on 'just-in-time' principles, rather than accessing the whole lens from bottom, and progressing upwards. Tight development schedules have required individual stoping block to be developed on such factors as grade and available tonnes rather than as a vertical sequence.

This paper details the work of RISKGATE, the largest Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) occupational health and safety initiative to date. The program is an interactive online risk management system developed to maximize health and safety performance in the coal mining industry by implementing continuous improvement in managing major unwanted events. The comprehensive knowledge base covers tires, collisions, fires, isolation, strata control underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks, and slips/trips/falls. All major Australian coal mining companies contributed topic experts to this broad industry initiative: nine coal mining companies, more than 80 experts, and more than 400 days of individual time for knowledge-capture workshops.

The I-75 Modernization Project (Segment 3) just north of Detroit, MI is being delivered as a Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM), which is a Public Private Partnership (P3). The project includes design and reconstruction of 5.5 miles of freeway, including a depressed section with a 20,630-ft long, 14.5-ft inside diameter, up to 100-ft deep stormwater tunnel, multiple drop shafts, and a pump station. The project also includes a maintenance term of 25-years. This is the first time MDOT has used a P3 delivery method for a major highway and tunnel project. This paper describes the development of the P3 documents, including performance-based tunnel and shaft technical requirements, and the approach to project risk management, financing, and insurance coverage.

An on-stream iron ore analyser has been developed in collaborationwith Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited for determining the iron content ofboth lump (- 30+ 6 mm particle size) and fines ( - 6 mm particle size)on conveyor belts. The analyser, which is called IRONSCAN, is basedon pair production, and is now commercially available from Mineral ControllnstrumentationLimited (MC!) in Adelaide. It can be mounted underexisting conveyor belts with minimal modifications to the conveyor structure,and the presence of steel cables in the belt does not interfere oncethe analyser has been correctly calibrated. The analyser has been extensivelytested on both lump and fines on the shiploading conveyor at Dampier,and typically the root mean square (Lm.s.) deviation between singleIRONSCAN measurements and conventional chemical analyses is betterthan 0.5070 Fe. It is currently being evaluated on - 150 mm ore from theprimary crusher at Mount Tom Price, and initial result are encouraging.The principal advantage of IRONSCAN is that it provides rapid informationon ore grades. But perhaps its greatest potential is at the primarycrusher where conventional sampling and analysis is very expensive toimplement.

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid binary and ternary Fe-Ni-Co alloys has been measured by the Sieverts' method between 1550°and 1700°C. Solubility data and standard free energzes and enthalpies of solution for nitrogen in the alloys are presented. Interaction parameters are discussed and presented for binary and ternary alloys. MOST of the studies of nitrogen solubility in liquid metals have been directed toward the dilute alloys of iron. Several of these investigations have included measurements of the nitrogen solubility in Fe-Ni al10s'- and in Fe-Co alloys.435 There has been some work, however, that has extended across the e-i-" and F-CO" binaries. This investigation was undertaken to determine the nitrogen solubility in both binary and ternary alloys of the Fe-Ni-Co system. It was also hoped that the differences between earlier studies might be resolved. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD This investigation was made using a Sieverts' apparatus described previously." The nickel (99.85 pct) and cobalt (99.9 pct) were obtained from Sherritt-Gordon Mines, Ltd., and the iron (99.95 pct) was Fer-rovac-E obtained from Crucible Steel Co. Recrystal-lized alumina crucibles were used throughout the entire investigation with no evidence of crucible-melt reaction. Melt temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer and the temperature scale calibrated against the melting points of the three pure metals. The emissivity of the melt was assumed to be a linear function of composition for all alloys, as has been shown for Fe-Ni alloys.lZ The emissivity of the pure metals at 1600°C were taken as 0.43 for iron, 0.44 for cobalt, and 0.45 for nickel. Using these emissivities, the trans mis sivity of the system was found to be 0.51 i 0.01. The Sieverts' method was used for this study and followed the procedures outlined previously.l' The individual metals were weighed to give about 100 g of alloy. The alloys were melted in the crucible under a partial pressure of argon. The system was evacuated, and the "hot volume" was measured with argon. To avoid the errors caused by vaporization, the melt was held under vacuum only long enough to ensure that all of the gas in the system had been removed. The influence of any small amount of vaporization on the "hot volume" was shown to be negligible by measuring the "hot volume" after a run. This measurement agreed with that made at the start of the run within the implicit error, 0.2 cc, caused by the limitations in accurately reading the buret. The solubility-pressure relationship was measured in the pure metals and in several alloy compositions throughout the ternary system. These measurements were made by admitting measured amounts of nitrogen to the system, and then determining the equilibrium nitrogen pressure above the melt. This method has the distinct advantage of higher accuracy, particularly at lower pressures, than measurements made by withdrawing gas from the system to reduce the pressure after determining the solubility at 1 atm nitrogen pressure. This latter method has a practical lower limit of about 0.4 atm where an increased error is encountered because the buret must be emptied to permit further measurements at lower pressures. By determining the relation between apparent solubility and pressure, it was possible to make a good estimate of the initial nitrogen content of the metal from the intercept of the solubility curve extrapolated to zero pressure.11 DISCUSSION The solubility data corrected to 1 atm nitrogen pressure are summarized in Table I. The reported solubility has been corrected for the initial nitrogen content of the alloys. The initial nitrogen contents fell between 0.0002 and 0.0010 wt pct, and were lower in the iron and nickel than in the cobalt. Sieverts' law was obeyed in all alloys at pressures up to 1 atm. Examples of this behavior are shown in Fig. 1. The reaction for solution of nitrogen is Taking the standard state as 1 wt pct N in the alloy and the reference state as nitrogen at infinite dilution in the alloy, and noting the adherence to Sieverts' law, K becomes the solubility of nitrogen in the alloy at 1 atm pressure. Thus the solubility data of Table I were used directly to calculate the standard free energy for the solution reaction. These results are also presented in Table I. The enthalpy of solution is also summarized in Table I as calculated from a form of the van't Hoff relation: Iron-Nickel System. The data for the solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-Ni binary alloys is presented in Fig. 2 along the with data of aito, Schenck et al.,' and Humbert and 1liott.l' The data for studies of nitrogen solubility in Fe-Ni alloys containing less than 20 pc t i'- are not presented in Fig. 2, although they are in good agreement with the present work. "In this work, the Panzhihua low grade ilmenite and graphite were milled for 1, 2, 4 and 8 h firstly, then the temperature rising behavior of milled sample in microwave field were studied. The average heating rate of samples milled for 1, 2, 4, 8 h were 1.86, 4.08, 2.82, and 2.32 K/s; Before optimize the microwave reduction process, several experiments were conducted in order to confirm the parameters range. After milled for 4 or 8 h and reduced above 930 oC, the Fe metallization are higher than 90%; Then the optimization was investigated by using response surface methodology (RSM), the significance of predict model and each terms were analyzed, and the optimization parameters were given as: milling time is 4 h; reduction temperature is 1001 or 1070oC; the holding time is 37.5 or 26.9 min. Under these conditions, the Fe metallization given by predict model is 91 or 92 %.IntroductionThere is about 9.66 billion tons of Vanadic Titan-magnetite deposits in Panzhihua, China. In this reserve, there is about 8.73×108 t of TiO2, accounting for 90.54% of the Chinese reserves, and 35.17% of the international reserves and ranking first in the world. [1] Titanium mineral deposits are classified into Rock type and Placer type. Rock type is the igneous mineral, which have high content of FeO (Relative to Fe2O3) and gangue. The Panzhihua ilmenite is a typical rock type ilmenite ore. The higher contents of MgO, CaO, SiO2 and the complex mineralogy are making its direct reduction progressively more difficult."

In Brazil, kraft pulp mills are rapidly expanding and industrial waste generation is increasing. Technical feasibility of using solid wastes from kraft pulp mills as raw material in other industries may be an interesting approach to manage environmental and economic aspects of the industry. This paper proposes the incorporation, in different proportions (0, 2.5, 5 and 7.5%), of alkaline solid wastes from pulp mills, namely dregs and grits, to clinker in the Portland cement industry. The research was carried out in two steps: (i) characterization of dregs, grits and clinker; (ii) laboratory testing (determination of soundness by the Le Chatelier method, determination of setting times, determination of water content of the paste with normal consistency, determination of compressive strength and static modulus of elasticity). The results showed that the addition of dregs and grits to the clinker up to 2.5% were feasible according to the Portland cement Brazilian standards.

The application of methods using large diameter down holes has become an important facet in both the development and stoping operations of mines within the Aberfoyle group. Holes of up to 98 metres (vertical) and 78 metres (inclined) have been successfully used in stoping operations. A number of rises have been developed to meet ventilation, servicing and escape-way requirements. The most ambitious rise to date has been a..vertical 93 metre long by 4.50 metre square ventilation rise. Although some early problems were experienced, the ultimate successful completion of this rise has enabled the technique to be incorporated with confidence in future mining plans. This paper summarises experience in long hole rising techniques, their evolution from the original cratering concepts, and the approach to further development of these techniques.

"This study evaluated the Salvinia sp action on metals biosorption in a synthetic sample of acid mine drainage (AMD) in order to determine the time and amount of metals uptake. Biosorptives tests were realized varying the contact time of 5, 20, 60 and 240 minutes. And keeping constant the follow parameters: pH (2.6), biomass concentration (1g.L-1), temperature (25°C) and agitation (175rpm). In order to quantify the metals concentration captured by biomass, the AMD samples will be analyzed by ICP. Biosorbent, Salvinia sp., will be characterized before and after the biosorptives tests through analysis of SEM and IR. The micrographs indicate the occurrence of micro-precipitation and changes in biomass physical structure. The infrared spectra indicate changes in functional groups present in the biomass before and after the biosorptives tests.IntroductionThe current emphasis on environmental sustainability leads the industry in general, to treat their waste. The human activities are increasing, highlighting the industrial and mining activities, and have promoted the contamination of soil, waterways and groundwater by metals (1). The waste must undergo treatment processes aimed at reducing pollution, and therefore, less aggression ecosystems.This means the importance of studies of economic and effective methods to eliminate these metals from wastewater generated. The bioindicators are good investments in this area. The aquatic weeds are plants that inhabit swamps up from truly aquatic environments. They have several morphological and physiological adaptations that enable them to colonize the various aquatic environments. They are used as bioindicators of water quality and have also been used in decontamination of aquatic environments, production of biomass for livestock feed, fertilizers, soil and fish tanks (2)."

For over 40 years the Institute of Innovative Technology EMAG has specialized in the development of systems and equipment for laboratory and on-line monitoring of coal quality parameters, as well as the implementation of these systems and devices in mines and power stations. Some of these systems, based on advanced radiation detection techniques such as ?-ray backscattering (ALFA-06 and ALFA -06/T systems) or dual energy ?-ray transmission measurement (ALFA-06/2E ash meter), and also the ALFA-06/3E system applying microwave technology for the measurement of moisture, have had numerous applications in Poland. At present, over 100 systems and devices are used in Polish hard and brown coal mines. For over 10 years, EMAG has been specializing in the development of systems and devices, based on natural gamma measurement technology. An on-line ash meter, RODOS and RODOS Ex, based on measurement of natural gamma radioactivity of coal, has been developed and put into operation. This technique has been also used in developing the portable ash meter WALKER and laboratory analyzer GAMMA NATURA. The paper briefly presents features of the above-mentioned devices, their limits and their obtained accuracy, but in particular refers to the laboratory analyzer, GAMMA NATURA, as the first such device in the world, and presents the results of ash and moisture content measurement in hard, brown coals and potassium salts. The possible applications and advantages of the device in coal mines are discussed. The paper also presents the implementation results of the portable ash meter, WALKER, and the on-line ash meter, RODOS, that is used underground in coal mines.

Cable bolts are being used more extensively by the mining industry for many different rock reinforcement applications. The configuration of these bolts has evolved over the last 20 years to meet the immediate needs of industry at the particular time. Most improvements to date have focussed on increasing the mechanical performance with little attention given to issues such as ease of handling, matching response to that of the rock mass or corrosion protection. Ultrastrand has been designed and being developed with this broad perspective in mind so that it will satisfy the ground reinforcement needs of today's and tomorrow's mining industry.Laboratory tests on Ultrastrand prototypes have confirmed that mechanical performance is superior or equivalent to Standard and Birdcage Strand respectively. Preliminary discussions have been held with an installation equipment manufacturer with a view to conducting a trial at a mine site by early-1992.

The New Guinea orogen comprises terranes that have accreted to the northern margin of the Australian craton. The history of the accretion of terranes begins earlier (in the Late Cretaceous) and is more complex than has been suggested previously. There was a collision in the central highlands in the Late Paleocene or Early Eocene, and a Finisterre collision that precedes and is distinct from the later (Pliocene) Bismarck volcanic arc collision.

The samples tested were taken from commercial shipments and have been selected to represent the principal coal producing areas of the country . Due to combining the analytical results from two separate surveys , values for the four elements are not available for all samples .

Introduction Since the discovery of a major oil pool at Leduc, Alberta, on February 13th, 1947, the long spell of 'oil drought' in Western Canada is now being turned into an oil and gas flood which requires immediate action to obtain the optimum economic benefits. The Woodbend, Section 9, and Okalta extensions of the Leduc field itself have been established; the Redwater pool, lying thirty-seven miles northeast of Edmonton, has been discovered and is being drilled up, and the Imperial Schoepp No. 1 or Golden Spike discovery holds promise of something phenomenal in view of the 500 feet of oil-saturated coral-reef porosity whose areal extent is not known. Imperial Stanolind Barrhead No. 1, northwest of Edmonton, revealed the presence of oil in the Madison, and just recently Gulf N.J. Ellis No. 1, some sixty miles southeast of Leduc, found commercial production in the Leduc D-2 discovery zone. In addition to these Paloeozoic discoveries, gas and oil reserves have also been established in the Upper and Lower Cretaceous, which must be penetrated by all tests on the way through the geological column to the Devonian. If ever there appeared to be an index of 'things to come' in the oil industry, this is it. However, without these recent discoveries the picture in Western Canada does and always did, look very promising indeed. A brief survey of the geological setting in Western Canada is the object of this contribution.

The potash mine and refinery of AMAX Chemical Corporation is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad on the north end of the potash producing areas. This property was developed between 1949-1952 and production of muriate began in August 1952. Two shafts, located 400 feet apart, were sunk to the ore zone 900 feet below the surface. A 15-foot diameter ore hoisting shaft equipped with a 1000-ton ore pocket, crusher and automatic skip loading equipment plus a 20-foot diameter service shaft with a curtain wall for exhausting air were provided. Sylvinite production to date has been from the first ore zone, stratigraphically, the lowest of ten identified mineralized zones in the salt section. This first ore zone has been the top producer of Muriate of Potash over the years. In our area we do have some very marginal mineralization in the third ore zone some 35 feet above the first. We have not mined from this seam as yet but we are investigating the economics very closely with access slopes and an experimental mining panel. Our ore seam is generally flat lying but does have local gentle rolling with grades from 2% to 5%. The mine was designed and developed from the beginning with conventional mining practices and rail haulage from the mining section to the ore pocket. As mining progressed in the early years, production increased from less than one million tons annually to a maximum of 3,935,000 tons in 1964. Efficiency also kept pace with the increasing production and continually improved until the efficiency of the production crews reached an average of 100.3 tons per manshift in 1964.

In view of health and environmental concerns related to mercury, the mining industry takes leadership in the responsible management of mercury. This paper reviews various aspects of mercury management, including an overview of mercury deportment in typical gold processing flowsheets; trends in mercury legislation impacting the international flow and management of mercury in the gold mining industry; and treatment, storage and disposal options for mercury and mercury containing materials.
