A BRIEF history of the growth of the anthracite-coal preparation will give a better view-point from which to judge the present problem of separating slate from coal. At the beginning of the commercial value of anthracite, 70 years ago, only the pure portions, or " splits," of the veins were mined and shipped to market, and without any preparation or screening other than the selection, while loading, of the glassy lumps, and the rejection of the fine material and the slate that had strayed accidentally into the coal. The next step was the crushing or breaking of the coal (hence the name Lt breaker" as applied to the preparation-building), and the sizing of it by means of bars or revolving screens. This stage of its development marked the advent of the "breaker-boy " as a slate-¬picker, with his ever-increasing capriciousness. As the richer veins or ? splits " became exhausted and the market demanded a still greater output, the less-pure " splits " and the thinner veins were utilized to produce the coal. Carrying as they do a far greater percentage of impurities; particularly when removing the pillars, it became necessary to build new and better equipped preparation-plants. Finally, we are now at the highest stage of complication yet known to the art of coal-preparation. "Time domain spectral Induced Polarization (IP) data from the Tower, Jojay and Laurel Lake gold deposits in northern Saskatchewan are presented. The resistivity data shows both resistivity lows (due to fault, shear or alteration zones) and resistivity highs (due to silicification) in the area of the deposits. The high resistivity zones suppress and distort coincident IP responses, calling f or high quality surveys and special care in interpreting the IP data.Electromagnetic methods are not effective in locating the deposits. This is due, in part, to masking by conductive cover. The Jojay Lake deposit has a strong magnetic response. A more indirect magnetic association is seen for the Tower Lake deposit. The Laurel Lake deposit has no magnetic signature. Magnetic data are useful in defining structure in all cases.All three deposits are outlined in the IP survey results. IP anomaly amplitudes from the pole-dipole array are from two times (Tower and Laurel Lak e) to six times (Jojay Lake) background values. Gradient array IP anomalies are of less amplitude. The spectral time constant is short for the Tower and Laurel Lak e deposits and long for the Jojay deposit. This implies that the metallic sulphides in the Jojay deposit are more interconnected than those of the other two deposits. INTRODUCTIONInduced polarization / resistivity surveys are commonly used in gold exploration program s in the Canadian shield because the IP method is effective in detecting disseminated metallic sulphides which are often found associated with gold. Other common geophysical sur vey methods such as magnetics, VLF and EM are not generally capable of direct detection of disseminated sulphides. Since the introduction of the IP method in the 1950s, it has undergone continuous improvement. The most recent improvement is the development of time domain receiver s which sample the full de cay and record it in digit al form. This results in a more complete measurement of the response which permits analysis and enhancement of data quality and the derivation of a nomaly parameters which characterize the measured decay. This extension of conventional time domain IP methods is called spectra l IP, a term first introduced by Pelton et al. working in the frequency domain Spectral IP surveys are attractive because they allow the possibility of discriminating between IP responses which have similar amplitudes but are due to dissimilar geo logic targets. The discrimination can be important in the selection of IP anomalies for follow-up.Time domain spectral IP survey results are presented over three known gold deposits in northern Saskatchewan-Tower Lake, Jojay Lake and Laurel Lake. The surveys were initiated and supported by Cameco-A Canadian Mining and Energy Corporation (formerly the Saskatchewan Mining and Development Corporation-SMDC) and were carried out by JVX Limited using the Scintrex IPR-II receiver and attendant spectral analysis software."

"OUR INTEREST in estimates of world reserves of lead and zinc is focussed mainly on the information they give about the sufficiency of metal supplies for the future. However, we soon realize that the estimates can be interpreted in several different ways. Accordingly, it is necessary to have some under-standing of the elements represented by a compilation of world re-serves, and we will start by examining the accuracy of the estimates and what they attempt to measure.Variations in Estimates of the ReservesIf we study the estimates of world reserves that have been published in recent years, we note immenediately that they vary over a considerable range. For example, an article by Shea in 1947 gave world reserves as about 36 million tons of lead and 60 million tons of zinc. Shea did not in elude the United States but I have added to his totals the estimates made by the Bureau of Mines for that country in arriving at the foregoing figures. For approximately the same date, the American Zinc Institute and the Lead Industries Association reported world reserves as about 50 million tons of lead and 77 million tons of zinc. A comparison of the two sets of figures shows a mean variation of 30 per cent. For individual countries the difference between estimates can be even larger. A few years ago the estimate of Canada's reserves made by the United States Bureau of Mines was 7.4 million tons of lead and 14.0 million tons of zinc, while the Gordon Commission reported 1 O. 7 million tons of lead and 26.0 mil-lion tons of zinc. In this case the mean variation was 55 per cent."

The Brazilian economy has always presented a strong correlation with the mineral activity. Since colonization days, due to the territorial expansion caused by the explorers search for gold, mining in Brazil became a basic sector of national economy. Currently, the Brazilian mineral sector¹ estimates a 550% production increment (Figure 1A) in the last 10 years, reaching the US$ 50 billion value, reflecting the increased global demand for raw materials from mineral origin. According to the Brazilian Constitution², mineral resources belong to the Federal State and, consequently, their exploitation must be authorized, under penalty of engendering federal crime. Furthermore, activities of this nature are prone to cause environmental degradation such as, but not limited to, deforestation, pollution, soil deterioration and water contamination. The GPEMA represents the forensics group of the Brazilian Federal Police responsible for the technical analysis of traces related to crimes against the environment and consequently, illegal mining cases.

A previously reported high-resolution method for the location of boron-rich areas in metallurgical and biological specimens was been adapted for general use on a routine basis. The rnetlzod utilizes neutron activation and autoradiograpizy. Alpha-particles emitted by boron nuclei upon neutron capture are recorded on a photographic emulsion. The resulting a-particle tracks show the location of boron-rich areas. Experimental techniques, interferences, and limitations of the method are discussed in detail. The method is most useful where there is marked segregation of boron. In this type of sample, the segregation can be observed when the nominal boron concentration is as low as 0.0006 pct. THE positive identification and location of boron-rich areas in metals is frequently of great interest in metallurgical work. Unequivocal identification is often difficult to make by conventional metallo-graphic methods. Recently, a method has been described which accomplishes this objective by neutron activation and autoradiography.l-3 The method can be described briefly as follows. Upon neutron capture, a -particles are emitted by boron nuclei according to the following reaction: ,Blo + n - ,a4 + 3Li7 + 2.4 mev The energy is dissipated as kinetic energy of the products. By irradiating a boron-containing sample in contact with a photographic emulsion and subsequently developing this emulsion, a-particle tracks are obtained whose location corresponds to the location of boron-rich areas in the sample. Two factors combine to make the reaction extremely specific for boron. The first is the unusually high (755 barns) cross section of boron for thermal neutron capture. The second is the higher neutron energy required to produce (n, a ) reactions in essentially all other nuclei except lithium. These two factors make the method specific for boron by six to seven orders of magnitude when a predominantly thermal neutron source such as the Brookhaven reactor is used. The reported limit of detection of this method is of the order of 0.01 pct B., The present work was originally undertaken to determine whether this limit could be lowered by use of a thinner emulsion. However, initial experiments showed that in order to use the method at all, it was necessary to reestablish the optimum experimental conditions in terms of the available irradiation facilities. It is the purpose of this paper to describe these experimental conditions in detail, to discuss the factors influencing sensitivity, and to evaluate several techniques for increasing sensitivity. EXPERIMENTAL A) Preliminary Experiments—The first measure-ments were made using samples of crystal oriented silicon steel containing various concentrations of boron. In the later experiments, samples of various high-temperature alloys such as M-252, hcoloy 901, Nichrome V, and so forth, were used. Faraggi, et al.,2 reported that the lower limit of sensitivity in this type of sample was about 0.01 pct B using nuclear emulsions of 50- u thickness. but that it should be possible to extend this limit by the use of thinner emulsions. Accordingly, we first used Kodak Auto-radiographic Stripping Film (Permeable Base) which has an emulsion thickness of only 5 µ. This was mounted on the metallographic specimens according to the technique described by Boyd.4 The emulsion remained in contact with the metal surface throughout exposure and development. Since the emulsion is transparent after development, the autoradiograph and metal surface can be viewed simultaneously and any correlation between film blackening and structure of the metal can be made directly with no problems of realignment. Because the silicon steel is readily attacked by moisture alone, it was necessary to apply a protective coating to the metal surfaces before mounting the emulsion. The coating was made extremely thin in order to absorb as few a-particles as possible. Boyd4 and Gomberg5 have discussed various plastics used for this purpose; however, none was sufficiently impermeable to prevent chemical attack of the steel during the developing process. This attack resulted in the production of gross chemical artifacts in the emulsion. It was, therefore, necessary to use the method of Wolfsberg and John6 as follows. A very thin (approximately 1 µ) coating of Plexiglas II was applied by dipping the sample in a 2 pct solution of Plexiglas II in dichloroethylene. Then, because the emulsion will not adhere to Plexiglas 11, a thin coating of Parlodion was applied in a similar manner using 2 pct Parlodion in iso-amyl acetate. Manganese is one of the main impurities in the recovery of base metals from their ores. This is especially true when laterite ores are processed using the pressure acid leach (PAL) process. The use of intermediate precipitation, solids/liquid separation and re-leach in the three Western Australian nickel laterite plants to separate nickel and cobalt from manganese and other impurities makes these processes complicated and costly in capital and operation. The research work carried out by the solvent extraction (SX) group at the A J Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy (CSIRO Minerals) has led to the development of direct solvent extraction processes to separate nickel and cobalt from manganese and other impurities. The simplicity of the process flowsheets and the expected savings in capital and operating costs are the major advantages of the new direct solvent extraction processes over the existing processes. By using a new synergistic organic system, Versatic 10 / dccyl-4-pyridinccarboxylatc ester, with a pilot plant leach solution from BHP¬Billiton (after iron precipitation), the metal values (Ni and Co) together with zinc and copper were separated from manganese and other major impurities (Mg, Ca and Cl) in the first SX circuit. The co-extracted manganese, magnesium and calcium were easily scrubbed out. The extraction and stripping kinetics of the metals with the new synergistic organic system were very fast and the synergistic system was found to be chemically stable. pH-extraction isotherms of metals with D2EHPA showed that the extraction order as a function of pH50 was Zn2+ > Ca2+ > Mn2+ > Cu2+ > Co2+> Ni2+> Mg2+. Semi-continuous test work with a cobalt pilot plant leach solution from Peko Rehabilitation Project Pty Ltd and a synthetic solution to simulate a concentrated laterite leach solution from BHP-Billiton showed that manganese, together with calcium, copper and zinc can be separated from nickel, cobalt and magnesium. This led to the development of another direct solvent extraction process to separate manganese and other impurities from nickel and cobalt and to recover nickel and cobalt from leach solutions. A project was initiated by HiTec Energy Ltd to recover manganese from waste laterite leach solutions using SX technology and to further purify it to produce high purity electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) for the high quality alkaline battery industry. Batch tests were conducted to select a suitable organic system for the extraction of manganese in terms of selectivity and extraction and stripping kinetics. A total of eight organic systems were tested using waste laterite processing solutions. A Versatie 10 / synergist system showed very promising results. By using the synergistic system, high manganese recovery would be obtained, fewer SX stages would be required and a higher A:O ratio could be used in extraction, resulting in a smaller organic inventory and lower capital costs. THE first plans were made in 1930 for the mining by open-pit methods of the low-grade disseminated ore body now known as the Morenci open pit. It was not until 1937, however, that final plans were completed and the decision reached to go ahead with the actual development. Many advances were made in open-pit mining equipment during that period of seven years, therefore the ways and means of attack actually used were very different from those originally contemplated. Diesel-operated bulldozers, big trucks, full-revolving electric shovels and electric churn drills constitute the major equipment finally purchased for this modern stripping operation. Neither the bulldozers nor the big trucks were considered in the early operating plans, for at that time bulldozers had not, been used in mining operations and the trucks as yet were undesigned. The full-revolving shovel and the churn drills were not new developments in open-pit equipment, but both had undergone remarkable manufacturing transition, emerging far more efficient and far more dependable than their predecessors. Even the ordinary drilling steel had been fundamentally changed. It was now threaded so that the dulled cutting bits could be detached and replaced, thus eliminating the costly transportation of long bars to the drill shop for resharpening. The decision to use trucks in the preliminary stripping operations was based on the desirability of this type of transportation to economi-cally prepare the pit for rail haulage, coupled with the success that the contractors had had with them on other big excavation jobs. There are at present no plans for the use of trucks beyond the preliminary work, inasmuch as rail haulage will give lower costs after roadbeds and benches are once established.

I. INTRODUCTION. THIS cavern was discovered Oct. 22, 1904, by Mr. Charles H. Deutschman, in company with whom I made, May 29 to June 3, 1905, at the request of Mr. Howard Douglas, Superintendent of the Canadian National Parks, the first exploration of it for the Canadian government. The results were stated in a paper, orally presented, with lantern-views from my photographs, at the British Columbia Meeting of the Institute, Victoria,, B. C., July 5, 1905.* The present paper embodies also the results of a second examination, made Oct. 25 to 29, 1905. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, will serve as a guide to the following description. II. LOCATION. The cavern is situated at snow-line, at the head-waters of Cougar creek, on the west slopes of the Selkirks, about 2 miles north from Ross Peak water-tank, and 5.5 miles west from Glacier House, on the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It was then reached by an arduous climb from the water-tank, up the ravine of Cougar creek, for 8,000 ft. (2,000 ft. of altitude) over rock- and snow-slides, and through a thick tangle of alders. But an easy and very picturesque trail has, during the past summer, been opened by the government from Glacier House. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 represent views, not heretofore published, of the grand scenery of this region, so rapidly becoming the-object of attraction to thousands of tourists from all parts of the world. Solutions containing Cr6+ and sulfuric acid are used in a number of surface-finishing operations. Substantial quantities of chromium and copper are lost and pollution problems are created when the spent solutions are discarded. To minimize the undesirable environmental effects while improving secondary resource recovery technology, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to detoxify and recover metals from these solutions. Spent etchants are treated to remove copper and reduce Cr6+ to Cr 3+ in an electrolytic cell. The anodes and cathodes are granulated coke. The spent solution is continuously pumped through the electrodes. Hexavalent chromium is reduced to trivalent chromium, and copper is recovered at the cathode. Reoxidation of Cr3+ at the anode was not observed. The removal and recovery of copper reduction of Cr6+ lessen chemical demand and increase efficiency in waste in treatment operations associated with the use of these solutions.

The Mount Charlotte gold mine is located 0.75 km east of the General Post Office in Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie WA and about 3.5 km north of the Fimiston Operations on the famous Golden Mile.Mechanised underground bulk-mining at Mount Charlotte has been in continuous operation since 1963. For the 30-year period ending December 1992, the mine produced 22 million tonnes (Mt) of ore for a recovery of 2.73 million ounces. During 1991/92, the mine produced 1.53 Mt of ore at a head grade of 3.15 gramshonne (g/t) for a recovery of 135 822 ounces.The principal ore source at Mount Charlotte has been the Charlotte Orebody which is now largely mined out. Since 1990, approximately 75 per cent of production has been sourced from the Reward Orebodies. The Charlotte Orebody was a relatively homogeneous quartz stockwork with simple geometry and average bulked grades in the range of 4.0 to 5.5 g/t. This is in contrast to the Reward Orebodies and the more recently defined Charlotte Deeps and Maritana Stockworks, which have complex grade distribution and geometry with lower average bulked grades (2 to 4 g/t). The lower grades are principally due to the decreased density and volume of stockwork venation and related vein halo alteration. Typically, these stockworks comprise a patchy mosaic of quartz veins and vein swarms, with irregular distribution and geometry within the quartz gabbro host rock.

Industrial minerals are the Cinderella of the mining I industry. Often considered as just dirt by traditional hard-rock miners and oil drillers, these products nonetheless comprise the second largest segment of the industry and the fastest-growing one. With annual sales of $5.7 billion, industrial minerals make up 22% of the dollar value of U.S. mineral consumption. By contrast, metals account for only 11%. Fuels, of course, are dominant, representing 67%. The dollar values of production and consumption for the three segments of the industry in 1968 are shown in Table I. The growth rate of industrial minerals is shown in Table II. From 1953-1968, the current-dollar value of all U.S. mineral production increased at the average annual rate of 3.8% while that of the gross national product increased at 5.9%. Industrial minerals are the only segment of the mining industry that approached the growth of the overall economy in this period, with production values increasing 5.1% a year and apparent-consumption values 5.6% These data, expressed in current dollars, include the effects of inflation. The growth in U.S. industrial minerals production is even more striking when expressed in indexes of physical production. As shown in Table III, production of all U.S. industries increased by 4.1% a year from 1953 to 1968. The growth in production of stone and earth minerals just matched this figure. By contrast, the average annual increase for oil and gas was 2.2%: for metals, 1.6% : and for coal, only 0.6 %.

This Bureau of Mines report describes and compares the procedures, capital investments, and operating costs of rotary and in-hole motor drilling techniques used to drain methane gas from the Pittsburgh Coal- bed in an underground mine located in southwestern Pennsylvania. A timestudy was conducted during the drilling of each of two boreholes, and the data were collated to serve as a base for comparing drilling procedures and operating costs. Findings indicate that drilling with an in-hole motor offers four advantages over rotary drilling; namely, an increase in drilling productivity, fewer worker-hours required, ease of maintaining vertical and horizontal bit trajectory, and less expensive drilling cost per foot of borehole.

PRESIDENT SORENSON: The meeting will come to order, gentlemen. I note from the program here this morning that you were supposed to have an address by the president. I can assure you, gentlemen, that the president is not going to make an address, so you don't need to squirm in your chairs. I do want to say it's certainly a pleasure to be here. I am sorry that I wasn't here last year. Apparently my absence lent consent, and I think it would be a good warning to every member of the organization to be here for all the meetings for your own protection! It's always a pleasure to be here and meet again with some of our old friends and meet a lot of new ones. It always interests me at these meetings to meet with the rugged individuals that operate the coal industry. They have to be rugged; they couldn't be any other type of men and live in it. I also know that it takes a good rugged man to fight this game nowadays. I feel that the men who operate the coal industry are fighting a battle against socialism. You all know we are the first industry they have their eyes on. If they take over our industry, they will take over everything else.

"A major geomechanical study was conducted for one of the UAE onshore oil fields with the purpose of studying reservoir rock properties and stress distribution, based on which a 3D coupled reservoir geomechanical model was built. This model was later used for wellbore stability analysis and for analyzing the effect of fractures on future reservoir production performance, including fracture deformation and permeability evolution occurring due to reservoir depletion and resulting changes in local stress field. The subject of this study was a complex fractured Upper Cretaceous carbonate reservoir characterized by high degree of heterogeneity, both vertically and laterally. Wellbore instability related drilling problems were encountered while drilling the wells in this field. The problems were mainly in drilling the horizontal wells, including breakouts and mud losses. Experimental results of laboratory tests are summarized in this paper whereas wellbore stability analysis and formulation of a 3D geomechanical model that was built for that purpose is summarized in a sister paper (Part II).A suite of tests reported includes tensile strength, uniaxial and triaxial compression and permeability under stress at simulated reservoir conditions. All tested rocks have been grouped into twelve test units and reservoir geology, rock types and challenges related to designing a viable sampling and testing program for a big reservoir are discussed first followed by sample selection criteria and details of the testing program. All test units showed brittle behavior at zero confinement and some samples showed similar behavior at low confining stresses. With confining stress increase, the behavior gradually turned to plastic but some samples showed features of ductile behavior even at low confinement.Obtained experimental data have been summarized in the form of strength criteria and correlations. The Mohr-Coulomb strength equations were obtained for each test unit and also for the averaged values. It was noticed that triaxial compressive strength (TCS) increases with decreasing porosity or increasing density but their influence on TCS is getting smaller with confining pressure increase. Good correlation of porosity and density with Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), friction angle, cohesion and tensile strength has been noticed and there was an increasing trend between the confining pressure and TCS. Rock type (mud or grain supported) was not influencing the TCS as much as porosity and density and the two lithologies encountered affected TCS approximately in the same way. These results and correlations are summarized and explained in this paper. They were further used in the numerical modelling part (Part II) of this paper, Hozayen et al. (2015). It is also concluded that rock lithology is not a decisive factor and mechanical properties of tested rocks should be rather considered dependent on porosity and permeability. This helped greatly in reducing the number of tests that had to be performed."

At the early stage of a mining project, small amounts of concentrates are available for testwork. For gold concentrate or ores containing significant arsenic levels, batch bench scale roasting is often unreliable, leading to highly variable gold recoveries to be used in the project’s financial justifications. With an appropriate bench scale unit using continuous feeding and residence time control for solid and gas phases, reliable numbers can be obtained at small scale with only a few hundred grams per test condition. This paper describes the development of a pilot fluid bed roasting unit by Kingston Process Metallurgy Inc. (KPM) to perform representative trials on gold concentrates containing arsenopyrite, arsenian pyrite and carbonaceous components. Calcines produced under different conditions were characterised by chemical analysis and electron microprobe; the calcine microstructure obtained is described. The most important parameter affecting gold recovery is oxygen content in the roasting atmosphere, with the lowest controlled oxygen level giving the highest gold recoveries. Higher local temperatures in the bed may cause the formation of molten glassy phases which can also reduce the gold recoveries significantly. The impact of roasting conditions in the two inch fluid bed is compared with commercial results obtained in full scale operation.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop blast designs for the control of fragmentation and rock displacement and the reduction of overall mining costs. This Bureau experiment, a program of 25 reduced-scale blasts conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla's experimental quarry, determined the effects on fragmentation of changes in burden, spacing, explosive diameter, and stemming-explosive length. Combined with previous work at this experimental quarry examining air gap, delay, and decoupling effects, this experiment provided a data base of over 50 shots. The fragmented rock, 1000 to 3000 kg from each 3- to 4-hole blast in the 1 m bench of massive dolomite, was completely screened to assess fragmentation. The explosive used for all the tests was extra dynamite initiated by seismic caps fired from a sequential blasting machine with delays of 5.2- to 13-ms/m of burden. Empirical equations were developed which predicted the effect of shot design parameters on the fragmentation. These formulas predicted the average fragment size of each of the 25-shots to within 13 percent. For spacing to burden ratios of 1, 1.4 and 2, there were optimum burden to explosive diameter ratios (B/de) of 30, 26 and 20, respectively. Decreasing the B/d. ratio beyond these levels resulted in little or no reduction in the average size. For B/de ratios above these levels the average size increased but, at least a 15 percent reduction in the average size results when the shot design parameters are optimized.

A Special General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg on Wednesday, 29th September, 1971. The President, Prof. D. D. Howat opened the meeting at 9.55 a.m. The President read the notice of meeting which was as follows: "In order to bring industry into closer liaison with the work of your Institute and to place the Institute's finances on a sound basis your Council recommends that companies be admitted to membership of the Institute under clause 2.6 of the Constitution, that is, as Non-Corporate members. The designation for this class of member will be that of "Company Affiliate". 2 Membership: This clause to be amended as follows:- 2.6 "Non-Corporate members shall comprise the grades of:- Company Affiliate Honorary Fellow Graduate Associate Student" 2.6.1 This clause to be added:- "Companies involved in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries are eligible to become company affiliates" 2.14 Add:- "A special certificate shall be issued to all company affiliates". After giving the background to the recommendation made by Council the President asked for a proposer and seconder for the resolution. Mr J. K. E. Douglas proposed and Mr D. G. Maxwell seconded the resolution. The meeting agreed that the constitution be amended as proposed. The meeting closed as 10.05 a.m.
