The stress-field orientation mapping and analysis (SOMA) technique for determining the operative stress field near mine workings and its relationship to various fracture sets is described using Dickenson-Russell Coal Company's Laurel Mountain mine as an example. Carried to its practical application, this technique ultimately defines the optimal orientation for the mine workings wherein pillars, rather than rock bolts or other roof support methods, dominantly shoulder support of the highest-probability, potential, roof-fall blocks. It also provides a predictive tool describing local variability in rock deformation and in secondary roof support methods. Fracture discontinuities within a rock mass, either as pre¬existing natural fractures or as mining-induced fractures, are uniquely necessary for every brittle-deformation ground failure including roof falls. Prediction and mitigation of roof falls requires quantifying the interaction between the fracture sets and the operative principal-compressive¬ stress-axis orientation (olo). The SOMA technique utilizes the interaction between fractures and 61o, specifically their dilation or closure, to calculate the orientation of 610, and to estimate the orientations of 62o and o3o. A stereonet program is used to organize and statistically analyze the fracture data, and then to determine the optimal orientation for the mine workings. The final step in the SOMA technique involves modeling the Laurel Mountain mine using a 2-D, finite-element, modeling program. This assures that the interpretations regarding the optimal working orientation closely match the deformation features observed in the mine. It also provides a predictive tool describing highly variable stress and strain partitioning, seemingly erratic rock-bolt failures and the interactions between different sets of mine workings within different coal seams. The critical importance of including the fracture sets is well illustrated in the Laurel Mountain mine where the effects of earlier mining of an underlying seam is contrasted in both a fractured and otherwise identical non-fractured model to illustrate the consequences of ignoring fractures in a predictive roof-fall model.

The degradation of thiocyanate in a simulated gold mill effluent was studied using a laboratory scale rotating biological contactor (RBC). Complete SCN- removal was obtained at temperatures of 8 and 12°C, and a hydraulic retention time of approximately 3.3 h. The NH4+ produced by thiocyanate hydrolysis was oxidized by nitrifying bacteria to NO2 and NO3-. The HS- produced by thiocyanate hydrolysis was chemically and biologically oxidized to elemental S, which was subsequently biologically oxidized to sulfate. Incomplete sulfur oxidation occurred in the RBC, particularly at 8°C and elemental sulfur deposition was observed on the RBC disks. The RBC feed exhibited toxicity to rainbow trout but the RBC was effective in removing the acute toxicity of thiocyanate.

The suggestion of the use of measurements of trace amounts of mercury as a guide to the location of sulphide ore deposits was first made by the Russian, A. A. Saukov (1), in 1.946. Since Saukov's original work, many others have studied the abundance of mercury in nature, the association of mercury with sulphide ores and methods by which very minute quantities of mercury can be measured in air, soil, rocks, water and plants. The most abundant of the mercury bearing minerals is cinnabar (HgS). Native mercury is also found and sulpha-salts like tetrahedrite are known to have important mercury contents. Other sulphides of base metal deposits contain mercury in amounts ranging from parts per million to as much as one or two percent. (2) The mercury content of sulphide-free rocks is usually less than a few hundred parts per billion (1 ppb - 10-9), Soils usually contain less than 100 ppb and water less than 1 ppb of mercury. Normal atmospheric air contains about 1 nanogram (10-9 grams) of Hg per cubic metre although higher concentrations can be observed near mercury occurrences, sulphide deposits and volcanic exhalations.

"A paper called “Global Experience with Soft Ground and Weak Rock Tunneling under Very High Groundwater Heads” was presented at the North American Tunneling 2006 conference (Holzhäuser et.al 2006). It summarized global experience with earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry shield tunneling on nine projects that encountered groundwater heads ranging from 6 to 11 bar. Since then, additional projects have been completed with groundwater heads ranging from 7 to 15 bar. Of these, the high pressure tunneling experience on the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project in Nevada and on the Eurasia Tunnel (Istanbul Strait Crossing) had the greatest lengths of tunneling at face pressure over 7 bar. Experience with sustained pressurized face tunneling at groundwater heads over 7 bar and risk management observations are the focus of this paper. INTRODUCTION High groundwater head, particularly at 7 bar or more, is a major challenge when tunnelling in high permeability ground and on drives long enough to require cutter changes. It has a strong impact on design and operation of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) in order to protect the main bearing from contamination, prevent excessive groundwater inflow, ensure face stability and enable access to the cutterhead and excavation chamber for maintenance. During the past 20 years, TBM manufacturers and suppliers have made tremendous improvements that allow tunneling at groundwater pressures to 17 bar or more. The most significant risk with high pressure tunneling is generally that of excavation chamber access and potentially the cutterhead for cutter changes, cutterhead repairs and TBM maintenance. Hyperbaric interventions are possible and safety variances have been approved for saturation dive interventions at pressures as high as 17 bar (Lake Mead Intake No. 3). While high pressure hyperbaric intervention equipment is available and safety approvals can be obtained at many locations, few contractors consider the cost and risk of hyperbaric interventions over 7 bar to be acceptable as the primary means of excavation chamber access. Experience with high pressure tunneling prior to 2006 was summarized in a paper entitled “Global Experience with Soft Ground and Weak Rock Tunneling under Very High Groundwater Heads” (Holzhäuser et.al 2006). That paper provided information on 9 projects: South Bay Ocean Outfall, San Diego; Channel Tunnel (French Side), France; Storebaelt Tunnel, Denmark; 4th Elbe Tunnel, Germany; Wesertunnel, Germany; Westerschelde Tunnel, Netherlands; St. Petersburg Red Line, Russia; Nara Prefecture Water Conveyance Tunnel, Japan; and Tokyo Wan Aqua Line Tunnel, Japan – see Table 1."

The paper considers the selection of control instrumentation for a modern flotation plant, as well as the best interpretation and most effective use of the process data obtained. Process control computer availability is considered from the outset. A general philosophy of control is proposed which leads toward a system that is its own reliability monitor. The bulk of the problems are in grinding and classification. Alternative control methods are described that use particle size measuring devices. Flotation controls, based to a large extent upon on-stream X-ray analysis, are reviewed in detail. Reagent control methods are also examined. Methods to analyze the data obtained from the various measurement devices are introduced. These methods would enable an estimate of the validity of the data and require some redundant information. Another objective of these methods is the protection of operating equipment from possible control malfunctions. Although the discussion generally considers some degree of computer usage, this paper attempts to describe instrumentation and data analysis methods that enable control with or without the process control computer.

"Large subhorizontal joints have been found in the foundation excavations in basalt and granite of Brazilian Dams. Some spread for hundreds of square meters showed slickensides—polished surfaces plus striations—and laminations interpreted as related to shear displacement, what substantially reduced their shear strength and imposed special reinforcement measures against the potential sliding of overlying concrete structures. The geological characteristics of these discontinuities have raised speculations related to their origin, be it related to mechanisms of bulging, cambering or to some tectonic or primary geological event.Several geologists and engineers from the northern hemisphere including Terzaghi already showed to be concerned with their role in granite foundations while in the southern regions Brazilian authors have found similar occurrences but also affecting individual lava flows of continental flood basalts in the foundations of major dams of the Parana Basin, which they designated under the particular name of “fault-joints”. This double-standard designation is self-explanatory of the difficulties involving their origin and related geomechanical properties: faults or just shear joints?Recently, similar features were encountered in the foundations of large dam constructions in anorogenic granites inserted in the realm of the Brazilian Amazon, where some of these discontinuities exhibit features common to tectonic thrusting combined with deep tropical weathering.The evidence of preshearing along the surfaces of such fractures, also associated to products of deep weathering, reduces their geomechanical strength substantially, suggesting values of ultimate phi spanning 12 to 28°. The detection of these descontinuities during initial investigation phases continues to be a major complex task in geological risk evaluations surveys. Trenching associated to some geophysical exploration techniques, although considered to be very basic exploration techniques are still the suggested methods for their forecast and previous determination."

The U.s. Bureau of Mines is conducting research to optimize the utilization and design of mine roof support systems. This report describes methods to evaluate resultant loading on longwall shields, defined as external resultant vertical and horizontal force acting on the canopy and base. Four models are considered: two rigid-body models, an elastic model, and a numerical model. The rigid-body models equate measured internal shield forces to unknown external resultant shield forces (loads) through rigid-body analysis of static equilibrium requirements. The elastic model develops a solution to shield mechanics by evaluation of the load-displacement relationship and stiffness characteristics of the support structure. The numerical model is a two-dimensional finite-element representation of a shield structure. Model determination of resultant shield loading is compared to controlled loading of a shield in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. Parameters investigated are shield height, canopy contact configuration, canopy and base horizontal constrainment, and boundary conditions imposed by vertical and horizontal shield displacements. It is concluded that rigid-body models are most applicable to in situ measurement of shield loading. Applications requirements and potential error sources are discussed.

This paper presents the results of numerical modeling of the fractured zone around longwall gateroads. The numerical computations have been based on the results of underground measurements of the fractured zone around longwall gateroads, which were performed for various geological and mining conditions and measured with the use of the endoscopic method with a digital camera. Having results of the underground investigations, trials of duplicating them by the Finite Element Method using software PHASE and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion were performed. In order that the fractured zone predicted by the model-based computations closely simulate that measured underground, some selected parameters in the Hoek-Brown failure criterion were modified based on the earlier determined relations used for prediction of the roof-to-floor convergence in longwall gateroads. As a result, the model-based computations produce results very close to those obtained from the underground measurements. Determination of the fractured-rock zone around the mine roads is of great importance to mining practice, especially in planning and designing supports for longwall gateroads. The influence of the front abutment pressure causes the fractured rock zone around the roads to increase and results in an increase of support load. Moreover, proper determination of the fractured rock zone is one of basic elements in the process of planning roof bolting for mine workings.

Prior to April, 1961, the coal charge to Clairtonts coke oven batteries was 3" x 0" mine waslied coal having approximately 6.0% to 7.0% moisture. Even at this size and moisture content, the arching, rat-holing and hang-up was excessive and the effective live storage of coal was only 60% to 70% of the rated capacity of the coal bunkers, depending upon the moisture of the coal. In addition, many production delays were encountered in the time and methods required to fill the larry cars. The need for an improved metallurgical coke led to the introduction of pulverized coal to a portion of the plant in 196 1. When the full potential of the pulverizing equipment was realized, we were able to serve seven batteries in our second unit of batteries with pulverized coal through two coal bunkers. The discharge hoppers of these bunkers were equipped with air vibrators to assist the flow of pulverized coal into the larry cars. The vibrators were helpful in this respect but required considerable maintenance and caused damage to the bin plates.

In 1827, chromite was discovered near Baltimore by Isaac. Tyson, Jr., who initiated the mining of chrome ore and later (1845) the manufacture of chromium compounds in this country. From 1828 to about 1560 the United States, supplanting Russia, supplied chromite for most of the world. Chrome deposits were found also in California, and the Tyson Company shipped ore to Philadelphia by way of Cape Horn. In 1848, J. Lawrence Smith, an American in the employ of the Porte, discovered large bodies of chromite in Asia Minor. They were developed in 1865 and became the chief source of the world's supply for a number of gears. The discovery of the large high-grade bodies in New Caledonia., and later in Rhodesia, with other foreign sources, gives at present an abundant supply for all demands. For a number of years before the great war. the United States produced only a few hundred tons of chromite annually, for local use, but during the war the demand for domestic ore resulted in a production of more than 82,000 long tons of crude ore in 1918, and it was demonstrated that the United States has reserve deposits equal to a war demand of several years' duration. Now that the war is over, the country is con-serving its domestic supplies by employing higher-grade but cheaper ore from foreign countries.

"Use of zinc shot feed is a well-established procedure among North American electro-galvanizers. This form of zinc is easy to handle and relatively inexpensive when compared with zinc oxide. This paper reports results on the kinetics of zinc shot dissolution in traditional pure zinc solutions and in electrolytes used for the plating of nickel/zinc alloys. Despite the cementation of minor amounts of nickel in the latter solution, acceptable dissolution rates of the zinc shot can be achieved through proper adjustment of the solution velocity. Under these conditions, the nickel shell produced by cementation is continuously abraded, exposing the underlying zinc.IntroductionThe use of insoluble, noble metal-containing anodes rather than soluble zinc anodes for the operation of high current density electro-galvanizing lines has gained almost universal acceptance. Two major reasons for this trend are:• improved control of the process by virtue of constant inter-electrode distance; and• increased productivity because the operation of the lines does not require the relatively frequent interruptions for replacement of consumed anodes .The results of the principal anode and cathode reactions are, respectively, depletion of the zinc content of the electrolyte and the increase on its acidity;"

ABOUT fifty pages of Henry M. Howe's profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neu-mann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211}. Attempts to develop the structure of the bands by various methods so that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent. of nickel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2. was reproduced in the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form 12111. Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form {211} as sketched in Fig. 2. Flotation of ores is a practical utilization of the energy that resides in the surfaces of solids and liquids. The best known manifestation of this energy is called surface tension; an equally important, though less apparent, phenomenon is adsorption. This paper reviews some of the recent investigations of these phenomena, and gives the results of certain experiments performed by the authors. Surface tension is a manifestation of energy having its seat at the bounding surface between the adjacent phases of a multiphase system. Thus, at the interface between a liquid and a gas, or between two immiscible liquids, or between a solid and a gas or a liquid, there are forces capable of doing work, their magnitude depending on the nature of the adjacent phases and the extent of the bounding area. These surface forces are inappreciable when the ratio of surface to volume of the adjacent phases is small, but they become powerful when this ratio becomes large, as it does when one of the phases is highly dispersed. Froth flotation, which consists in buoying solids heavier than water to the surface of water by means of gas bubbles, utilizes the force of surface tension to attach the solid particles to the gas bubbles and again to maintain the floating mass of bubbles as a more or less persistent froth at the surface of a pulp for a sufficiently long time to allow its removal. It follows from the second law of thermodynamics that the potential energy of a system in equilibrium is a minimum. Therefore a multiphase system, tending toward equilibrium, will arrange itself in such a way that the total energy of the interfaces will be the least possible. THE developments in construction and operation of the basic open-hearth furnace that have taken place in recent years have placed new emphasis on the vital influence played by regulation and control of the combustion system in both furnace production and furnace life. The several factors influencing flame development, such as regulation of fuel supply, air supply, air preheat, furnace draft, and furnace reversal, must be controlled closely if successful furnace performance is to be accomplished. Rugged instrumentation of distinctive design is required to sup- ply dependable information concerning operating conditions, which is requisite to proper regulation of combustion. This chapter attempts to give a practical discussion of the various features of open-hearth practice and instrumentation related to the efficient heating of the furnace, control of temperature, and protection of the furnace structure from accidental overheating. The appended references will be helpful to readers wanting a more detailed treatment of individual topics. OPEN-HEARTH FUELS The most important open-hearth fuels are listed in Table 4-1 together with their compositions and other data useful for combustion calculations. A detailed discussion of open-hearth fuels is not attempted here, but certain factors peculiar to their application to this type of process are briefly indicated on the following pages. Very often an open-hearth shop is forced by economic factors to use a fuel to which its furnaces are not very well adapted, because the general fuel-allocation scheme for the works as a whole seems to demand it. Often a variable marginal supply of coke-oven gas or tar must be consumed by the open hearth, together with another fuel such as producer gas, natural gas, or oil, to fill out total requirements. Introduction Many tables of nomenclature for igneous rocks have been introduced from time to time, and each has its strong proponents. As a result, any discussion of igneous? rocks is apt to prove confusing unless the names used for these rocks are defined. This ?became so obvious to a discussion group, formed by the members of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1948, that an attempt was made to establish a scheme of nomenclature that could be used by any member mapping anywhere in Canada. The writer was asked to co-ordinate the ideas presented by individuals in the discussion group, to arrange them in tabular form, and, later, to distribute copies of the resultant table to Canadian universities, provincial geological surveys, and some other geological discussion groups. Many useful suggestions and criticisms were received, were studied ?by members? of the original group, and, so far as practicable, were incorporated in the scheme of nomenclature. The result is the table presented here. This nomenclature of igneous rocks is at present being used by most members of the Geological Survey of Canada who are working with igneous rocks, and by some Canadian universities. We hope it will be found useful and be more widely accepted. With this idea in mind, certain principles were adopted in drawing up the nomenclature.

"Parts manufactured through power metallurgy (PM) typically contain pores that can be detrimental to the final mechanical properties. This paper explores the merits of 3D X-ray computed tomography over traditional microscopy for the characterization of the evolution of porosity in metal injection moulding (MIM) and direct powder rolling (DPR) products. 17-4 PH stainless steel (as-moulded, as-debound and sintered) dog-bone samples produced via MIM and Ti-HDH strips (as-rolled and sintered) produced via DPR and were analysed for porosity. 3D microfocus X-ray tomography (XCT) analysis on specimens from both processes revealed spatial variations in densities and the existence of characteristic moulding and roll compaction defects in agreement with traditional microscopic microstructural analysis. It was concluded that micro-focus XCT scanning can be used to study MIM and DPR parts for the characterization of the amount, position and distribution of porosity and other defects. However, the majority of the sub-micron sized pores could not be clearly resolved even at the highest possible instrument resolution. Higher-resolution scans such as nano-focus XCT could be utilized in order to fully study the porosity in MIM and DPR parts. IntroductionMetal injection moulding (MIM) is a novel process, which combines the advantages of powder metallurgy (PM) and plastic injection moulding. MIM has found widespread applications in the cost-effective production of high-sintered density small parts with complicated shapes and mechanical properties equivalent to those of wrought materials (German and Bose, 1977; Machaka and Chikwanda, 2015; German, 2013). There are four basic processing steps involved in MIM, namely; feedstock preparation, injection moulding, debinding and sintering. These steps are discussed in greater detail elsewhere (Machaka, Seerane and Chikwanda, 2014; German and Bose, 1977; Machaka and Chikwanda, 2015; German, 2013).Feedstock preparation involves mixing metal powder with a carefully selected composition of polymeric binder materials at a specific temperature. The feedstock is then granulated and injected into a predefined mould die with the desired shape. The part produced during the moulding step is referred to as a ‘green’ component. The green component typically contains no porosity since the spaces between adjacent powder particles are readily filled with the binder materials (German and Bose, 1977; Li, Li and Khalil, 2007). Debinding is the systemic removal of the binder components by chemical, catalytic, or/and thermal means while maintaining the shape of the component. The part produced after the debinding step is referred to as a ‘brown’ component. Debinding is known to be the source of porosity in brown components (Ji et al., 2001; Tsai and Cen, 1995). Finally, the brown debound part is sintered to full or nearfull density (Sotomayor, Varez and Levenfeld, 2010). The sintering step and associated densification closes up the majority of the pores. Sintered MIM parts are typically sintered to high density (95–99%) and retain an irreducible amount of residual porosity (Barriere, Liu and Gelin, 2003; German, 1990)."
