Advertisements and articles in technical and trade journals announce the approach of a new age, in which plastics, light metals, laminated wood, and numerous other products or byproducts will be used in the construction of automobiles, airplanes, and furniture and equipment used in our factories, offices, and homes. Undoubtedly, after the war there will be many such developments which will introduce new manufacturing methods and new hazards to challenge the safety engineer. Already we know, from experience in laboratories and pilot plants where these new products are being tested, that there will be many fire and explosion hazards to be overcome. The danger of dust explosions may be one of the principal hazards, because thetic resins and other materials used in the plastics industry, as well as metal powders, wood dust, and other finely divided substances, are capable of forming explosive mixtures in air. Heavy losses of life and property have been caused by dust explosions in flour and feed mills, starch factories, and grain elevators, and it will be well to consider the possibilities that such losses may occur in any new industry and to provide all possible safeguards against hazards. Fortunately, we have learned something about the behavior of dust explosions and know something about the ease of ignition, limits of Explosive concentration, end pressure developed. Our efforts should now be directed toward the application of this knowledge in the development of safe operating practices.

Pyrophyllite, a hydrous aluminum silicate (Al2 Si4O10 (OH)2 ) has been mined in North Carolina and marketed without beneficiation for the past 100 years, but recent demands for higher-grade material indicate that an economical concentration method is needed for at least a part of the pyrophyllite production. Past production has depended upon selective mining and hand sorting, which is often unsatisfactory because of the finely disseminated character of the ores. The major impurity in North Carolina pyrophyllite ores is quartz, which accounts for the abrasiveness of the commercial product. Since pyrophyllite is only slightly heavier than quartz, those ores cannot be beneficiated by simple gravity-concentration methods. Some separation can be attained by differential grinding and air classification because of the difference in hardness of the two minerals) but the separation is not sharp. Froth flotation of pyrophyllite from Quartz has never been attempted commercially, but if the demand for high-grade material is sufficient, it would seem that this process offers the most premise of being economically feasible.

The utilization of natural gas in non-ferrous industries during smelting and refining stages of copper , aluminum, zinc and lead was studied. The total amount of nonelectrical energy consumed in the production of zinc, copper, lead and aluminium, are 96.5% ,93%,92%, and 6 % respectively. It is calculated that 9.45 wt %of air of stoichiometric amount can be substituted by natural gas to the total air input in the nonelectrical energy utilization processes. The results showed that the non electrical energy may be substituted to an amount of 71 % ,52 % ,35 % ,32 % ,and 26% ,in the production of lead, aluminium (plates, foils) copper, aluminium, zinc, respectivelly. Similar calculations are carried out in terms of energy in Btu for the total production of non-ferrous metals in the U.S. It shows that 51.866~106 millions of Btu of nonelectrical energy can be substituted by 54.58~106 cu. ft of natural gas. Finally, the substitution of non electrical energy in terms of equivalent coal energy is discussed. 1t is shown that total non electrical energy is equal to 1.852 million tones of coal .If this 1.852 million tones of coal is replaced by natural gas, a total savings of 22.14 million dollars are achieved. The total or partial substitution of coal by the natural gas in the existing industrial processes and modification of redesigning the processes is discussed.

The requirements of the International Mineral Property Valuation Standards Template (IMVAL Template) (includes Petroleum), 4th edition of April 14, 2021, are based on six principles: 2.1.1 competence, 2.1.2 materiality, 2.1.3 transparency, 2.1.4 objectivity, 2.1.5 independence, and 2.1.6 reasonableness. The IMVAL Template describes “reasonableness” as, “The Valuer must ensure the Reasonableness of the Valuation. Any Valuation, assumptions applied, and any method relied upon should be reasonable within the context of the purpose of the Valuation and the Basis of Value. A method applied to the subject Mineral Property should be within the expected capability and consideration of an assumed likely buyer or lessee of the property.” The IMVAL Template’s Guidance 3.6 on Reasonableness states, “The test of Reasonableness is to consider what appropriately qualified and experienced Valuers, acting reasonably, would conclude in the circumstances. The Valuer must form an opinion that is reasonable in the circumstances, that is, what a Valuer believes is rational and plausible in the circumstances and would be viewed as such if considered by other appropriately qualified and experienced Valuers with the same information and at the same time.” Finally, the IMVAL Template’s Definition 4.26 states Reasonableness “[m]eans that other qualified and experienced Valuers with access to the same information for the same Valuation Date and Basis of Value would consider the Valuer's estimate of Value to be within a reasonable range.”

"Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC) Smelter scheduled a rebuild of their flash smelting furnace forSeptember, 2014. KUC’s goal in this project was to reduce the rebuild time from 65 to 55 days by using explosives to break the matte and brick layers of the uptake shaft and hearth sections of the furnace. Previous rebuilds had employed the slower technique of mechanical breakers to remove the matte and brick layers which took 22 days. KUC has many years of experience in removing slag from the uptake shaft, but they had never used explosives to remove the hearth. As far as KUC was aware, no other smelter operation had attempted a hearth removal in this way."

O projeto Minas-Rio da Anglo American iniciou suas operações em agosto de 2014 e tem capacidade para produção de 26,5 milhões de toneladas naturais por ano de pellet feed. O sistema contempla a exploração e concentração da jazida localizada no município de Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG), bombeamento do concentrado por 529 km até o município de São João da Barra (RJ), onde ocorrem a filtragem, estocagem e embarque do produto final através de navios. Desde a concepção do projeto até os dias de hoje, diversos estudos foram realizados objetivando-se entender o comportamento das diferentes litologias de minérios nas etapas de processamento mineral. Desses, os mais relevantes focaram nas duas principais litologias do depósito: o itabirito resultante da intemperização da matriz (IF) e o próprio saprólito (IT). Os principais pontos de investigação foram o comportamento dos mesmos perante as etapas de cominuição e concentração. O objetivo desse trabalho é apresentar uma revisão bibliográfica das diversas comparações de desempenho perante a cominuição dessas duas litologias. Além disso, são apresentados e discutidos resultados inéditos do desempenho na flotação quando concentrado separadamente ou como uma mistura. Os resultados disponíveis na literatura mostram que, ao contrário do que se imagina, o itabirito natural não apresenta consumo energético significativamente maior nas etapas de cominuição. Os testes de flotação, por sua vez, mostraram que o desempenho é diferenciado, em função do grau de liberação dos mesmos.

Taknar polymetal (Cu-Zn-Au-Ag-Pb) deposit and concentration flotation plant are located in the northeast of Iran. The flotation feed contains Chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite with 4, 4 and 8 percent respectively. Cu and Zn contents are 1.26 and 3.5 present. Pyrite decreases the quality of base metal concentrates and increases the amount of sulfur compounds produced in the base metal extraction processes. Therefore, depression of pyrite is essential in the concentration of base metal sulfides by flotation. For flotation tests, 4 mixed collector systems, MIBC (20g/t), lime and tow depression systems (sodium cyanide (60g/t)-zinc sulphate and dextrin (300g/t)-zinc sulphate) were used as collector, frother, pH regulator and pyrite-sphalerite depressants in the chalcopyrite flotation stage, respectively, and SIPX, MIBC, lime and copper sulphate (as activator) were used in sphalerite flotation from first stage tailings. The results have shown that, sodium cyanide is a suitable depressant for pyrite and sphalerite in the first stage of flotation. Compared to dextrin as depressant, chalcopyrite recovery was decreased approximately 1.83%. In addition, when sodium cyanide was used as pyrite depressant, copper sulphate consumption raised approximately 90 g/t for activation of sphalerite. From Environment and HSE points of view, dextrin is natural, biodegradable, and non-toxic while cyanide is very high toxic. Spatial and temporal trends in water chemistry in the acidic (pH ~2.6) Berkeley Pit lake, Butte, Montana, can be explained by a newly developed iron-cycling model. Key elements of this model include: subaqueous oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfide minerals by dissolved ferric iron, producing Fe2+ as a by-product; re-oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ in the epilimnion, assisted by A ferrooxidans; precipitation of secondary ferric minerals (schwertmannite, jarosite) in the epilimnion; and replenishment of the Fe3+ concentration of the hypolimnion by seasonal lake turnover and gravitational settling and re-dissolution of ferric precipitates. Pyrite oxidation rates were approximated by using published rate laws and information on the Fe3+ concentrations (~5 mmol) of the Berkeley Pit as a function of depth. The results indicate that subaqueous pyrite oxidation may be releasing as little as 6 + 106 or as much as 600 + 106 moles of H+ each year to the lake; the large range reflects uncertainty in calculation of the specific surface area of pyrite in the flooded pit. This helps to explain the observation that the pH and metal concentrations of the Berkeley Pit have not improved with time since mine flooding began in 1983. Vertical cycling of ferric iron in the pit lake permits pyrite oxidation to continue in deep water, even in the absence of dissolved oxygen. This hypothesis is supported by preliminary stable-isotope data.

El proyecto Antakori (Regulus Resources Inc.) está ubicado a 53 km al noroeste de la ciudad de Cajamarca en el distrito minero de Hualgayoc y es parte de la cuenca de los depósitos de Cu-Au-Ag del Mioceno del norte del Perú. Tiene un recurso indicado de 250 Mt con 0.48% de Cu, 0.29 g/t de Au y 7.5 g/t de Ag y un recurso inferido de 267 Mt con 0.41% Cu, 0.26 g/t de Au y 7.8 g/t de Ag (Eggleston et al., 2019). La geología consiste en un basamento cretácico de rocas sedimentarias (formaciones Farrat, Inca y Chulec) intruído por varios diques de pórfido que generan alteración y mineralización tipo skarn con mineralización de Cu-Au-Ag y cuerpos de sulfuros masivos. Posteriormente, se desarrolla un sistema tipo pórfido asociado a diques de pórfido cuarzo-feldespato-(biotita) y cuerpos de brechas con mineralización de Cu-Au-Ag-(Mo). Sobre las secuencias sedimentarias se depositan rocas volcánicas del Mioceno procedentes del centro volcánico Tantahuatay y son intruídas por diques/stocks subvolcánicos, ambos afectados por una fuerte alteración argílica avanzada con mineralización epitermal de sulfuración alta de pirita-enargita con Cu-Au-Ag-As-Sb. Un sistema epitermal de sulfuración intermedia con mineralización tipo “Carbonate-Base Metal” de Au-Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu, asociado a diques, de pórfido hornblendico constituye el último evento de mineralización en el proyecto Antakori.

A heterojunction model is suggested for descrihzng the electronic conditions at oxide -semiconductor interfaces. Detailed study of the silicon oxide-silicon interface shows that the heterojunction model explains many experimental facts; however, it is necessary to assume that a transition layer exists at the interface. It will he demonstrated that ionic contrbution way also he present. Extended low-temperature heating stabilizes the oxide to a charge carrier density in the order of 10' cln-: determined by the heterojuncton model. OXIDIZED semiconductor surfaces are widely used, since they offer technological advantages and "passivate" the surfaces of semiconductor devices. However, it has been recognized that there are always n-type inversion layers formed in the silicon oxide-silicon system, which must be regarded as a definite disadvantage. An added complication is the "instability" of these inversion layers;' the inversion layer appears to vary with the processing and they change at temperatures as low as 100" to 200°C This paper will point out that the inversion layer is a result of the dissimilarity of the contacting materials and therefore must always be present. The dissimilarity is the essence of the heterojunction or electronic model and involves directly the structure of the materials involved. In addition, one finds the contribution from ions; this disturbance, however. can be eliminated for the case of silicon oxide-silicon interface. The strength of the inversion layer or channel will be expressed in terms of the density of elementary charges per square centimeter, N*, maintaining the channel. The next section contains the formulation of the heterojunction model by assuming a contact between two homogeneous materials. This calculation should not imply that silicon oxide is homogeneous; it serves only to point out the general properties of the electronic model. Following the electronic model, the practical case of the silicon oxide-silicon interface will be discussed. I) THE HETEROJUNCTION MODEL Contacting an oxide with a semiconductor, a work-function difference must be accommodated. Fig. 1 represents the oxide and the semiconductor before and after contact. When the contact has been made, one finds that qVi + qV, = A@; i.e., the work-function difference is distributed between the oxide and the semiconductor. Normally, the work-function difference appears on the wide-bandgap material, but in the present case the oxide is thin and far from being a single crystal. Accordingly, a significant fraction of the work-function difference must appear on the semiconductor. The work function of silicon2 is about 4.8 ev, but we shall not assign any particular work function for the oxide as it may vary. However, oxides usually have lower work functions and therefore the potentials must build up in the manner shown in Fig. 1. Such an argument predicts that the inversion layer must be n type, as opposed to the clean surface which is p type. Another important factor to be considered is that the oxide is disorderly and therefore contains many trapping levels. As a result, the charges in the oxide arise primarily from the change in trap occupation, while on the semiconductor side the space charge is composed of mobile free electrons. The consequence of this fact is that a change to another thermal equilibrium will require some time, dictated by the traps in the oxide. Six different chemical explosives were detonated in a test series to com-pare their relative performance in granite. From 5 to 255 feet from the detonation point, strain, acceleration, and particle velocity were recorded and analyzed for amplitude and pulse shape. Strain energy was calculated from strain data, and displacement data were obtained from particle velocity data by integration. The results show that explosives which have a characteristic impedance more closely matching that of the rock generate larger peak amplitudes than explosives with a lower characteristic impedance. The results also show that as the ratio of characteristic impedance of exp1osive-to-rock approaches unity, more rock is crushed and a larger percentage of the avail-able explosive energy is transferred to the rock as seismic energy. The effect of characteristic impedance is shown to be greater than the effect predicted from acoustic theory and is believed to be indicative of shock wave effects at the explosive-rock boundary.

Since the advent of resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology for treatment of uranium-bearing ores in the 1950?s to current carbon-in-pulp (CIP) processing of gold values, metallurgies and operators alike have wrestled with the problem of interstage screening. Early gold CIP plants such as at Homestake utilized externally mounted vibrating screens in conjunction with air lifts to effect carbon-pulp disengagement. Other operations world-wide have likewise adopted this technique with varying degrees of success. Compared to the rocks encountered in, say, metalliferous mining or tunnel drivage in igneous and metamorphic rocks, the strata associated with the coal measures are relatively soft. If excavations are made at depths greater than one or two hundred metres, zones of fractured or yielded rock develop around the openings. The stress which can be taken by yielded rock at the boundary of an opening is low, but because of the friction present between the fragments or particles, the sustainable stress rises rapidly with distance from the opening until sufficient confinement has been developed to prevent failure of the rock in the first place. Thereafter the laws of elasticity will apply and increasing distance will reduce the stress field until conditions consistent with the cover load are reached. For rocks which maintain their elastic condition right to the edge of an opening, finite element analysis and similar techniques have proved successful in determining the distribution of stress around the opening. This approach, however, is not successful when a yield zone is introduced between the elastic zone and the opening. Nevertheless, some estimate is required if help is to be given in the siting of roadways and in the determination of adequate pillar sizes. This matter is of particular importance in the planning of new mines especially if retreat faces are involved, as extensive roadway drivage must be planned and executed before experience of the effects of face extraction is gained. In 1977, the author published [I] a method based on 'stress balance'. The total aggregate downward load over a large area will remain that of the cover load even after part of the coal seam has been removed. Any rise in stress in ribsides and pillars must be offset by an equivalent stress reduction across roadways and other areas of extraction, and vice versa. Knowledge of one can lead to an estimate of the other, provided the general form of the stress distribution can be postulated. It is the object of this paper to revue the method in more detail and to give further examples of its successful application.

Dicho personal utiliza los aparatos Me Caa de 2 horas, Mascaras Chemox - 45 minutos, All Service 2 horas y la máscara N. S. A. Oxygen Mask - Media Hora. En este sentido, el objetivo del texto radica en describir el uso de dicho complemento de protección al tiempo que señala el funcionamiento de los miembros de la cuadrilla. Las cuadrillas de reconocimiento está integrada por mineros, mecánicos, electricistas y un jefe de cuadrilla. Dada la importancia del uso de la mascarilla, los miembros del grupo deben revisar personalmente el estado del aparato a través de la comprobación de la presión, las válvulas y todo el equipo. El último hombre de la cuadrilla revisará al Capitán. Luego este jefe anotará la hora de entrada en la zona de gases y el reporte lo dejará en la base de aire fresco. Cada miembro de la cuadrilla es responsable del cuidado de la protección y una vez terminado el trabajo, se procede a anotar las observaciones requeridas para la siguiente cuadrilla. Si es que ocurriera alguna dificultad con la visión de los gases, se utlizará una cuerda de seguridad que permitirá el avance de los miembros del equipo.

D. W. Fuerstenau (Associate Professor of Metallurgy, Dept. of Mineral Technology, University of California, Berkeley, Calif.) In his excellent paper, Dr. Schuhmann has proposed a mechanism for conlrninution which can be utilized to explain a number of phenomena which have been observed in the size reduction of solids. The difference between the product obtained from a ball mill and from a rod mill can readily be explained by Dr. Schuhmann's hypothesis. Consider that the size distribution of the product from each comminution event is given by y; - 100 (x/ki) (1) where Yi is the cumulative percent finer than size x, ki is the size modulus, and is the distribution modulus for the single comminution event. The total product from a cornminution operation will be the summation of the products from all of the individual cornrninution events. If the size moduli from the various comminution events range from kl to kn , the size distribution of the total product will be a straight line on a log-log plot only to a particle size equal to k ,. 'Thus, the total product from a comminution operation will be a straight line on a log-log plot strictly up to a particle size equal to kl and above that size the line will curve so that y will equal 100 for the coarsest particle or k, (see Fig. 1). The actual shape of the size of distribution curve will depend upon the relative number of conmninution events of different kinds. In the case of ball milling, the ratio kn/kl may be pite large and there will be considerable deviation at the coarse sizes in a Schuhmann plot. kIowever, the grinding action in a rod mill is such that fine particles are protected from the rods by the coarse particles. Consequently, kn/kl will be quite small and the product from a rod mill will give a straight line Schuhmann plot almost to y equal 100%. In his paper, Dr. Schuhmann also has presented a very straightforward definition of grindability derived from the basic energy equation E = Ak-a (5) where E is the energy required to comminute a material to a size modulus of k and A is a constant. According to Dr. Schuhmann, the grindability of a material is the volume of material comminuted finer than unit size per unit of energy expended, this being 1/A. For comparison of grindabilities at any size two numbers are required, both = and 1/A, and anyone tabulating grindabilities should give both of these numbers. Concerning the experimental determination of grindabilities, if the material being comminuted possesses distinct cleavage, the energy re quired for comminution is given by E = Ak-(a-y) (6) where y is small number less than = . Because of cleavage, less energy will be required for comminution. To be certain that cleavage does not affect the gindability of the material being tested, it is suggested that the method used by Dr. Charles for determining grindability be used to ascertain if the deviation exponent y is zero or finite. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on underground stope leaching of metalliferous ores to minimize the environmental impact of ore processing on the surface and to maximize minable reserves. An aspect of this research is to minimize pregnant solution losses and/or groundwater contamination by leach solutions. Bulkhead design and construction are important issues for solution control and stope leaching economics. A reinforced concrete bulkhead was designed, constructed, and tested for solution control in an underground mine near Idaho Springs, CO. This paper presents the bulkhead design methodology and construction procedure.

THE state of Kansas had a daily average crude-oil production of about 87,000 bbl. at the beginning of the year. This showed a steady but consistent decline during the 12 months, so that the daily average production at the end of the year was slightly over 68,000 barrels. GREENWOOD COUNTY THE most active development in Kansas during the year was in Greenwood County, in a line from near Sallyards in T 25-R 9 to east of Madison in T 22-R 11. The main part of this development has been in a succession of pools beginning at the south with the Polhamus pool in 34-24-9 and 3 and 4-25-9; Thrall pool in 28, 29, 32 and 33-23-10; Burkett pool in 13, 23, 24 and 26-23-10; Seeley and Wick pool in 22, 27, 28,. 32 and 33-22-11 and 5, 6, 7, and 8-23-11; Frohm pool in 11, 14 and 15-22-11; Madison pool in 31 and 32-21-12 and 6, 22, 12 and 1-22-11. Some of these pools have two or more sands, locally called Bartlesville and Burgess Sands. They range in depth from 1850 ft. near Madison to 2450 ft. near Sallyards, the general dip being to' the west. The thickness of these sands run from 20 to 100 ft., the initial production of the wells being 50 to 1000 bbl of 40-gravity oil or better.
