"Research and development is currently underway to design an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system with the evaporator placed directly in the hot exhaust stream produced by a gas turbine (GT). ORCs can be used to generate electricity from heat that would otherwise be wasted, thus producing carbon-free energy. In conventional ORC configurations, an intermediate oil loop is used to separate the hot gas from the flammable working fluid. The goal of this research effort is to improve cycle efficiency and cost by eliminating the pumps, heat exchangers and all other added cost and complexity of the additional heat transfer loop by developing an evaporator that resides in the waste heat stream. Direct evaporation – although simpler and less expensive to implement than indirect evaporation of the working fluid – has historically been avoided due to a number of technical challenges imposed by the limitations of the working fluid. The high temperature of the hot exhaust gas may cause decomposition of the organic working fluid and safety is a major concern due to the high flammability of some of these working fluids. The research team has addressed these challenges and developed a new direct evaporator design that can reduce the ORC system cost by up to 15%, enabling the rapid adoption of ORCs for waste heat recovery. The ORC system is intended to integrate with the GT either as a retrofit or to be marketed as a single package, thus maintaining the manufacturer’s warranty.IntroductionWaste heat from turbines and engines used in industrial applications along with waste heat from industrial processes are exceptionally abundant sources of energy. If even a fraction of this waste heat could be economically converted to useful electricity, it would have a tangible and very positive impact on the economic health, energy consumption, and carbon emissions in the U.S. manufacturing sector. Land-based gas turbines are used in a broad range of applications to produce both shaft and electrical power. Most commonly known for generating electricity either as peaking units or as base load units, they are also used to directly drive pumps, compressors or other machinery requiring shaft power. Simple cycle gas turbines have the advantage of a short startup time relative to coal-fired and nuclear units, however, they incur a significant penalty on their efficiency. Large frame gas turbines usually are combined with bottoming steam-based Rankine cycles to increase the overall efficiency of the system and thereby improve their cost performance. Small-frame gas turbines with exhaust temperatures around 500°C could in principle benefit from steam bottoming cycles, but rarely use them in practice because of the high capital cost of the steam system. Particularly for base load small frame gas turbines, akin to those used in pipeline applications, an increase in efficiency is highly desirable."

FOR the mineral industry, as for many others, the year 1944 brought to fruition the seeds planted in previous war years. Accomplishment in attaining ends in the production of minerals has given more time for the consideration of postwar problems, such as plans for resuming production for civilian uses and measures to prevent possible mass unemployment. The hectic atmosphere in production circles lessened during the latter half of 1943, conditions becoming static during 1944 as peak production rates were reached. Withdrawal of deferment of young men from the mining districts by Selective Service connotes that man power at the battlefronts became more important than the persistence of pressure for metal production. This is in contrast to the return of soldiers in 1943 to augment the labor ranks in the mining districts. The year ended in the midst of changing needs. Over-all metal production in the United States in 1944 will record a lessening, compared with the previous year owing to labor shortages which affected both development work and ore output.

THE geophysical scene shifts and alters, the emphasis changes, and new possibilities loom, but the tendency is always towards widening the field and deepening the analytical penetration. Seismic methods have had their heyday, the torsion balance is being displaced by the gravimeter, electrical methods are showing deeper penetration, soil analysis is the newest tool, and gamma-ray logging appears on the horizon. One of the striking features of re- cent geophysical work in the oil fields has been the marked decrease in the number of seismic crews employed. Although the percentage of company crews is believed to have increased appreciably. the sum total has fallen sharply, as shown by the figures for the Gulf Coast area. About two years ago probably over 100 seismic parties were operating there, whereas now there are only about 35. This decrease may be partly due to the low prices of petroleum with a consequent reluctance to spend money to increase crude-oil re- serves but more probably to the fact that reflection and refraction shooting have been carried on so extensively that they have been applied to a large pro- portion of the areas in which they may reasonably be expected to succeed. Some of the earlier enthusiasm, particularly over reflection prospecting, may have erred on the side of over- optimism; some of the present curtailment may be due to over pessimism; but in the opinion of various observers seismic work at the present rate seems to be at it- optimum. It nevertheless remains pre-eminent as a technique for detailing structures in areas where good reflections can be obtained and is the only method that will give accurate depth to definite beds. Results may be poor in certain areas but many regions still remain wherein it can be applied, so that plenty of structural mapping remains to be done by the reflection seismic method.

"Ask an average non-industry person on the street “What is coal? What is coal mining? What is a coal miner?” The most common answers are coal is something Santa puts in your stocking for being naughty, coal mining is destroying the earth causing global warming, and a coal miner is a person that uses a pick and shovel to dig coal out of the earth. As farfetched as these answers seem, unfortunately this is the opinion of many Americans. Realizing the lack of educational opportunity regarding coal and coal mining, a first-of-its-kind grassroots coal education program known as CEDAR (Coal Education Development and Resource) was created. What started from a general conversation at the December 1992 North Carolina Coal Institute (NCCI) Winter Meeting at the Mid Pines Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina led to the creation, and later expansion of, CEDAR. NCCI President, Gene McBurney, challenged John Justice, NCCI Board Member from east Kentucky, to come up with an idea of how to improve the image of the coal industry, pledging $5,000 from the NCCI as seed money to assist in the development of any such program. John then met with the leaders of Coal Operators and Associates, Inc., (COA) in Pikeville, KY where they agreed to match the NCCI commitment, as well as to assist in the program’s development. After further meetings with representatives from industry, business, and the local school system, CEDAR, Inc. (of east KY) was born. The first year of implementation, the program offered coal education programs to public and private schools in one county in east Kentucky. Although it started in the coalfields of eastern Kentucky, it certainly did not end there. After an amazingly successful first year of the program, it didn’t take long for industry leaders in the western Kentucky coal-fields to learn about, and take note of this new, unique, and exciting program that provided opportunities for teachers and students to learn, “the rest of the story” about the coal industry. Through the joint efforts of Costain Coal, and the Western Kentucky Coal Association, CEDAR of West Kentucky, Inc. was formed in 1994, and has operated since that time, except for the two year period from 2004-2006. The program restarted in 2006 under the name of CEDAR West, Inc. and continues to be offered in six western Kentucky counties."

This paper will first discuss the fundamental requirements for reliable discharge of backfill by gravity alone at high per cent solids. This discussion will include brief mention of the underlying principles of saturated solids flow contrasted to that of stirred tank or dilute discharge systems. Here the need to possess full knowledge of the flow properties of the stored material will be highlighted. In regard to attainment of reliable discharge it will he revealed flow from a backfill silo will only occur provided: ò the flowing material in the converging channel is yielding throughout; ò slip is occurring along the walls; ò an arched stress field is present in the vicinity of the outlet; ò the flowing backfill must be dilating to flow in response to the dilating stress field; ò sufficient dilation water is injected, in the hopper, to eliminate the formation of adverse interstitial pressure gradients; ò sufficient dilution water is injected, downstream from the hopper outlet, to generate a pumpable slurry of maximum per cent solids; ò the silo level must be sufficient to prevent the pump suction forming a rathole; ò the system must be configured and operated to generate stable discharge density; and ò the system must be configured and operated to minimise damage to the pump liners. In addition proper account must be made of the silo overflow weir and settling capacity to match plant throughput. Here opportunity will be taken to highlight the complexity of this multi-phase flow situation as well as the general yet paramount requirements for reliable solids flow. It will be shown that by proper attention to the multi-phase considerations gravity discharge of slurries as a consolidated bed with minimal water content is possible. Such high solids discharge results in greatly reduced demand for process water. In addition pumping costs are reduced as is the delay time associated with the mine drainage operation. Confirmation of successful applications will be highlighted by reference to several recent case studies. In the concluding phase mention will be made of the key yet very simple and effective operation techniques which enhance reliable Discharge.

Coal fines of less than 0.5 mm particle size, discarded as too fine for gravity separation, were subjected to flotation tests at varying pH and temperatures using modified dosages of kerosene as oil phase and methylisobutylketone (MIBK) as frother. Optimal coal recovery of over 74% was obtained using 200 kg kerosene and 4 kg MIBK per ton of coal fines at a pH of 9.7 and an ambient temperature of 26° C. The coal concentrate obtained under these optimal recovery conditions assayed 9.10% ash, 0.35% sulfur and 0.011% phosphorus, representing reductions in the ash, sulfur and phosphorus contents of approximately 75%, 43% and 8.3%, respectively. Its gross calorific value was 32.9 MJ/kg, its percentage of volatile matter measured 30.6 and the fixed carbon content was 66.3% (d.a.f). Caking tests showed the optimal concentrate has a standard welling number of 1 and is a Gray-King coke type C. These results show that the optimal flotation product could be utilized for such industrial purposes as steam raising or for processing in gasworks, but it would be unsuitable for metallurgical coke production.

"The oxidation of NADPH by vanadate(V) in the presence of glutathione reductase showed typical enzymatic kinetics. The oxidation was inhibited by N-ethylmaleimide, a glutathione reductase inhibitor. Superoxide dismutase had no significant effect on the oxidation, indicating non-involvment of the superoxide radical. The vanadate(V) reduction was found to be a one-electron transfer process. These results suggest a new pathway for vanadate(V) metabolism and a new function of glutathione reductase. Compounds of vanadium(V), such as NaV03 , exert potent toxic effects on a wide variety of biological systems (1-3). Despite intense current activity, however, the biochemical mechanism of vanadate(V) toxicity is still not well understood (1- 14). It is believed that one of the important pathways involves the oxidation (by vanadate(V)) of NAD(P)H (15, 16), but, to our knowledge, there has been no report of the identification of any vanadate(V) reductase. With a view to finding if there exists any vanadate(V) reductase, we have investigated the oxidation of NADPH by vanadate(V) in the presence of glutathione reductase. Glutathione reductase (GSSG-R)2 was selected because our previous studies have shown (17) that GSSG-R can act as a reductase for chromate(VI), which is isoelectronic with vanadate(V). We find that GSSG-R does indeed function as a NADPH-dependent vanadate(V) reductase, thus pointing to a new pathway for the metabolism of vanadate(V), as well as to this property for GSSG-R. MATERIALS AND METHODSSodium metavanadate (NaV03 ), henceforth vanadate, was purchased from Aldrich and its solution was always freshly prepared. The GSSG·R used was from bovine intestinal mucosa and was purchased from Sigma. The oxidation of NADPH was followed photometrically as the decrease in absorbance at 340 nm. The spin trap, 5,5-dimethyl- pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO), was purchased from Aldrich and used without further purification, since very weak or no spin adduct signal was obtained from the purchased sample when used alone.ESR spectra were obtained at X-band (9.7 GHz) using a Bruker ER200 ESR spectrometer. The magnetic field was calibrated with a self-tracking NMR gaussmeter (Bruker, Model ER035A) and the microwave frequency was measured with a digital frequency counter (Hewlett-Packard, Model 5340A). An ASPECT 2000 computer was used for data storage and analysis. The concentrations given in the figure legends are the final concentrations. All experiments were carried out in the phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.2) and at room temperature."

In the Polish coal mining industry, the use of mine waste in underground backfill has been the most common means of providing ground support to minimize surface subsidence, increasing extraction ratios, and reducing the quantity of waste for surface disposal. Over the last decade attention has been focused on the use of different waste as filling material of underground workings and grouting of roof fall rocks in caving area. In the paper, a brief history of the development of fill technology in Polish coal mining industry is presented. Next, the paper discusses various criteria that should be taken under consideration in the preparation process of a fill slurry and grout, fill distribution systems, mining geometry and placement methods. Moreover, in the paper evaluation of the potential of utilizing coarse and fine waste as a resource material in the production of a backfill slurry and grout for filling and injection in abandoned mines is presented.

Approximate solutions are presented for the heat-flow equations in a loss-free linear system with a moving source and with heat transfer by convection and conduction, representing in situ combustion in an oil reservoir. The rate of heat generation and the velocity vf of the source (flame front) are assumed constant. A cold front or convection front caused by the cooling effect of in-jected air develops behind the flame front and moves with velocity vc, which is determined by the thermal properties of the air and rock. Because of thermal conduction the fronts are not sharp; i.e., they do not represent temperature discontinuities. The following solutions apply after a sufficiently long time. where Q is heat generated per unit volume of formation, k is thermal conductivity, CF is volumetric heat capacity, a is thermal diffusivity, and subscripts 1 and 2 refer to values behind and ahead of the flame front, respectively. The parameter CF2 is contained in v . Te is initial reservoir temper- . C2 e ature and air-injection temperature. Other mathematically possible solutions are presented. The different solutions result from the use of different values for various physical parameters. The solution just presented is thought to be most commonly applicable. INTRODUCTION In this paper, approximate analytical expressions are derived for the temperature profile developed in the underground combustion method of oil recovery. A qualitative description of the process may be found in a paper by Tadema.1 The flame front is regarded as a moving source with a constant rate of heat generation. Heat transfer is by conduction and convection. Previous publications, of which a few are cited here, 2-5 have also attacked this problem and have presented solutions pertaining to different methods of approximating or idealizing the process studied. The present paper also treats an idealized case: linear flow is assumed for heat and fluids, and vaporization and condensation effects are neglected. The results obtained are similar to those derived by Bailey and Larkin,3 but are obtained by an entirely different procedure. The method used here should give considerably greater insight into the physics of the in situ combustion process. Four types of cases are considered, distinguished by thermal and fluid-flow properties of the system. A constant rate of heat generation and constant rate of flame-front advance are assumed. Flame-front temperature is determined for each case using a heat balance which involves the entire temperature profile. The applicability of the different solutions to real systems is discussed after they are all presented. Again, this is done for the purpose of understanding better the physics of the process. Consideration of the nonapplicable solutions and of the reasons for their not applying is significant. In a paper by Cooperman,4 the only case solved is one considered here as not applicable. Fluid flow, as such (pressures, saturations, oil recovery, etc.), is not treated. This subject has been covered in a paper by Wilson, et al.6 Also, we are not concerned with requirements for continuance of the process; we only attempt to determine the temperature history for cases where the process has continued for some time. In the spring of 1993, construction began on an ambitious building project in Boston, Massachusetts. The Shriners organization committed to offer state-of-the-art adolescent burn treatment and rehabilitation in its Boston facility by expanding in a most unusual way. In short, the concept included installation of caisson foundations and perimeter slurry wall panels to enable construction of a completely independent structure around and above the existing, continually functioning, hospital. Two distinct phases of work were detailed in the Contract Documents. At the completion of the first phase, patients will be moved into the new building, above, and demolition of the old structure, beneath, will be performed. In Phase I, sections of the slurry wall and caissons, located outside the footprint of the existing building, were planned. The next phase of the work includes the installation of the remaining caissons and slurry wall. Once excavation is completed, the balance of the new hospital structure will be constructed from the bottom upward, connecting to the under side of the new structure.

EVERYONE is familiar with the story of the poor Indian and his leaking tepee. He couldn't repair the leak while it was raining, naturally. And when it wasn't raining, where was the incentive? Even if this traditional Indian was apochryphal, his counterparts are certainly alive today, and operating on a world-wide scale. - A recent issue of the Wall Street Journal, for example, carried an impassioned letter from an old cocoa planter, who wants the world to know why the price of cocoa has gone skyrocketing. For years, he says, British and American interests have bought cocoa at the cheapest possible price and, incidentally, from growers willing to sell at that price. Between them, they didn't put enough money back into the business, either to fight disease in the cocoa groves or to plant new cocoa trees. Until new trees are planted and come into bearing, we will be paying exorbitant prices for our cocoa, and getting less of it.

THE Yukon Consolidated Gold Corporation, Limited, a Canadian company, operates alluvial gold dredges in the Klondike goldfields of Yukon Territory. Its operations are of unique interest to Canadian mining as it is the only large-scale placer mining operation of this type in Canada. Its properties lie in the valley of the Klondike river and its tributaries, Bonanza, Hunker, Bear, Last Chance, and All Gold creeks, and in the valley of Indian river and its tributaries, Dominion, Gold Run, Sulphur, Eureka, Montana, and Quartz creeks. At the end of 1938, they consisted of 1,650 placer mining claims and 9 leases or concessions. They cover a belt with an area of approximately 1,000 square miles. This vast area covers in part claims which have been previously worked by other methods such as 'drift' and 'open-cut' mining, and areas which were too low grade for such methods. The ground held by the Company is not held in freehold but in the form of mining claims and mining leases granted by the Dominion Government under the provisions of the Yukon Placer Mining Act. Full-size creek claims are 500 feet in length by 1,000 feet on either side of the base-line. Hill and bench claims are 500 feet up and clown the valley and 1,000 feet at right angles to the valley. All claims are held on the basis of an annual renewal fee of $10 for each claim plus 'representation work' of an assessed value of $200 per claim per annum. For the purpose of such representation work, claims may be 'grouped'. This means that work done by one dredge is sufficient to 'represent' a comparatively large block of claims. It is only in this way that it becomes possible to consider operations on a large scale over a term of years, for such operations would obviously be impossible on law-grade ground if representation work had to be done separately on each individual claim in each year.

"High-level radioactive wastes are stored in large underground storage tanks made of low-carbon steel. The wastes consist of concentrated solutions of sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and the radionuclides 137Cs, 99Tc, and 90Sr. The corroding steel microenvironment may produce localized reducing or oxidizing conditions that affect the solubilities of the species such as Tc(VII) and Tc(IV), which in turn modifies the kinetics of corrosion of the storage tank. To understand the influence of technetate ions on the corrosion of steel, electrochemical polarization studies of A 537 steel samples were carried out in 1 M NaNO3 + 0 .05 M S r(NO3)2 + 0.1 M NaOH with and without addition of HReO4 at different temperatures (24 – 85 °C). The concentration of HReO4 was varied from 0.014 – 0.04 M.INTRODUCTIONAqueous processing of spent nuclear materials generates a large amount of high-level radioactive wastes. The wastes are primarily salt solutions of sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrate which also contain fission products such as 137Cs, 99Tc, and 90Sr. Among the high level radioactive fission products, Tc-99 is of great importance because of its high concentration, long half-life (2.1 x 105 years), high solubility in geologic waters as technetate, and rapid diffusivity through the geologic systems. The solubility of technetate ions varies depending on the oxidizing conditions prevailing in the storage containers. High level radioactive wastes are stored in single shell or double shell tanks made of low carbon steels such as ASTM type A15, A516-70 and A537. Most of the available literature on corrosion of steel in simulated radio active waste environments pertains to nitrate induced stress corrosion cracking (Subramanian & Mickalonis, 2005). The corroding steel microenvironment may produce localized reducing or oxidizing conditions that affect the solubilities of the species such as Tc(VII) and Tc(IV). Corrosion of steel and formation of Fe(II) and Fe(III) will affect adsorption and reduction of Tc species. The radioactive species can irreversibly be sorbed on the steel surface by oxidation of Fe(II) to more stable Fe(III) and fixed as less soluble Tc(IV)/Fe(III). The solubility of Tc species is also affected by other factors such as dissolved oxygen, local pH, temperature etc. How the corrosion behavior of steel will be affected in the presence of Tc species is not clearly understood.Cartledge (Cartledge, 1960) demonstrated that passivation of iron can be achieved in the presence of oxygen along with suitable inhibitor ions/molecules of the general formula XO4 n-, such as pertechnetate (TcO4 -). The pertechnetate ion is univalent. Since it is derived from a strong acid, no buffering action can be expected from this ion. The redox potential of the reaction (1) is 0.738 VSHE (Pourbaix, 1974)."

The transverse loading requirement for stoppings as specified in the current Code of Federal Regulations is 39 psf. This measure is based on physical testing of a freestanding wall in accordance with ASTM E 72 specifications, where the dominant parameter is the tensile strength of the sealant. A new protocol based on arching has been developed to determine the true transverse load capacity of stoppings. Arching is achieved by the restraint of the stopping against the mine roof and floor, whereby compressive forces are developed within the wall. A laboratory procedure using the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to simulate rigid-arching of stoppings was developed and verified through full-scale in-mine tests. Using this protocol, a systematic study of the design parameters that affect arching capability in block stoppings was conducted. The study included a theoretical assessment of arching and development of design formulations that can accurately define the transverse load capacity of various stopping constructions under various loading conditions. This approach should lead to a safer mine environment by matching the transverse load capabilities of the stopping design to the requirements in the mine to ensure proper ventilation control is maintained.

Mining the Carpathia orebody at the Ardlethan tin mine in the late 1970s involved an innovative approach to underground mining which stretched the limits of drilling and blasting techniques. Holes of up to 95 m in length were drilled and blasted from the surface to extract an orebody which extended from 45 m to approximately 95 m below surface. This approach resulted in the elimination of an underground drilling sublevel, thus minimising the costs and hazards associated with underground drilling and blasting. Now, almost 30 years on, this method would probably still be the most appropriate choice.

Introduction The property of Wright-Hargreaves Mines, Limited is situated at the northeastern end of Kirkland lake, Ontario. It lies immediately east of the Lake Shore mine, and about in the centre of the Kirkland Lake camp. The district is served by the Swastika-Rouyn branch of the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario railway, the town of Kirkland Lake being four miles northeast of Swastika, which is 63 miles north of Cobalt and 392 miles north of Toronto. The mine is developed by three shafts and has more than twenty-eight miles of underground workings. There are two main producing veins, which lie in a porphyry boss 1,350 feet wide. Milling started in May, 1921, and to-date (January, 1933) the mine has produced gold to the value of $21,770,183. Present production is at the rate of 800 tons of ore per day. Structure and Ore Deposits The two major productive veins on the Wright-Hargreaves property are known as the North vein and the South vein. In the vicinity of the shafts these veins are approximately 550 feet apart. A third vein, known as the Inclined vein, has been worked from its junction with the South vein at the 2,000-foot level to its intersection with the North vein at the 800-foot level. This inclined vein has to date been found only in the area east of the eastern major north-south fault. The main North vein and South vein have a general vertical dip, although local rolls and post-ore faults throw certain sections out of line. From the surface to 3,900 feet, the North vein is displaced south less than 200 feet, and the South vein at the same horizon is almost perpendicularly beneath the surface showings.
