Valuations in the mineral industry differ from those of other enterprises because mines and oil wells have a definite life so cannot be considered a perpetuity. This requires that in any mineral-property evaluation the recovery of invested capital is necessary during the life of the property. Capital write-offs for nonextractive industries are assumed to be continuously plowed back to sustain the operation and produce yields on the capital invested. The extractive or mineral industry, however, generally attempts to return to the investor both interest and principal during the life of a property. Normally this is done currently and the dividend includes both items. Where the mineral property possesses large reserves and the life factor approximates a perpetuity, the return on investment is generally comparable to that of industrial stocks. The valuation of a mineral property, at best, is based on educated estimates and judgment factors. This is particularly true as it relates to estimating selling prices over a long term or assessing the quality of management. Also, it is possible to make various assumptions as to rapidity of working out the deposit, varying time for start-up of operations, varying earning rates, so as to obtain different results with the same basic facts. Thus it is not surprising that two engineers, irrespective of their abilities, may not agree exactly even when given the same facts, but their results should be close enough to be used in establishing a fair value for trading purposes. The valuation is no better than the source of basic data and the soundness of judgment factors. Fundamentally the basic principles of mineral valuation are similar for base metals, sulfur, oil, or any other mineral. Each mineral, however, requires an engineer to have a knowledge of such factors as its occurrence, distribution, mining and processing methods, and marketing problems in order to gather and analyze all the facts and data that have a bearing on the earning potential of the property. Present Value of a Mineral Property In essence the present value of a mineral property is a sum of money in today's dollars that future income from the property are worth. It differs from the total anticipated earnings by the amount of the interest that the unrecouped investment could be expected to earn during the period of recoupment. Thus, if one could accurately estimate what a mineral property will earn during its life, after deducting all operating, administrative, capital, interest, and tax charges, the determination of present value would be a relatively simple mathematical calculation. Normally, where the expected life of the mineral property extends beyond 20 or 25 years, the discounted value of earnings beyond this period is relatively small. The effects of the injection of dry limestone additives into boilers for the sorption of sulphur dioxide have been studied in pilot and full-scale systems. The effects of such injections on boiler mass particulate emissions as well as collectability characteristics of the fly ash and reaction products are presented. Implications of the effects on the design and economics of particulate collectors, in particular electrostatic precipitators, are discussed.

Plantwide control of mineral processing operations has long been sought for its potential benefits. These benefits include minute-to-minute optimization, reacting to disturbances in ore characteristics and equipment status as they happen and the coordination of all unit operations in pursuit of the highest performance level. However several difficult challenges have kept us from fully realizing those benefits. One of these challenges has been to provide fairly complete quantitative descriptions of Unit operations to account for critical interactions within and 'between unit operations. In some cases we understand the physics and chemistry very well and can incorporate that 'knowledge into phenomenological models. In other cases our knowledge is incomplete, so we must rely on other forms of knowledge such as fuzzy logic or neural nets. Another challenge to be met has been to simultaneously compute a large number of manipulated variables. In the past this challenge was met by optimizing only unit-by-unit, rather than on a global basis to significantly reduce the number of variables. In this paper, a procedure that globally optimizes one or two important variables is outlined. This procedure comes much closer to true plantwide optimizing control while remaining computationally feasible. Finally, another major challenge is to choose a meaningful global objective that can be calculated With the models and can be effectively optimized. Financial goals seems to be the objectives of choice. This paper discusses recent progress In overcoming the challenges and illustrates a promising approach which is being pursued at :Mexicana de Cobre's 'La Caridad copper ore concentrator. At M de C, advanced ,control strategies have been 'installed one at a time in the crushing, grinding and flotation sections. During this period, the throughput of La Caridad, Mexico's largest copper concentrator, 'increased from 76;000 tpd to 90,000 tpd. Plantwide integration is expected' to gain an additional 3% improvement in profitability.

In this paper is given a description of the flotation plant recently erected by Broken Hill South Limited at the South Mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W. It has been built on the site of the old flotation plant, which was described in a previous paper published by the author. The present paper is supplementary to the former paper in that it replaced the following sections thereof, namely, those from end of the second paragraph, page 269, to the end of the first paragraph page 282, and from the end of the second paragraph, page 284, to the end of the third paragraph, page 302.The roll crushing, fine grinding, gravity concentration, filtration, disposal of products and sampling in the new plant are the same as described in the above mentioned paper.The reconstruction of the flotation section, described herein, completes the reconstruction and modernisation of the treatment plant which was begun in 1928. A description of these earlier alterations has already been published in the Proceedings of this Institute.

This volume contains a summary of the results of past analyses on U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0122061 which are relevant to electromagnetic location in mine rescue situations. The analytical results indicated that detection of a trapped miner equipped with a special transmitter is feasible in most situations. Location of the miner by surface measurements is also generally feasible within certain errors. The feasibility of miner detection and the accuracy of miner location have been examined theoretically for a wide variety of situations. Agreement with experimental results is generally good in cases where measurements are available.

For a number of years prior to the world war, the firm of Geo. H. Thacher & Co., of Albany, N. Y., was engaged in the manufacture of marine and other gray-iron castings. At the outbreak of the war the firm decided to specialize in the manufacture of propeller wheels. It attacked the problem, therefore, from a foundry point of view, seeking to produce a casting that would be so accurate that no subsequent machining would be required on the blades, also from the point of view of the ship builder. There were two general methods of manufacture, the shortcomings of which have been freely acknowledged. In the sweep method, the nowel, or bottom half-mold, for each blade is swept up by a spindle beam and pitch race, while the top half-mold for each blade is built up individually. In the pattern method one individual blade, with the hub or hub portion, is mounted on a spindle and the individual blade mold formed, the pattern is then rotated on the spindle to the position for the next blade, etc. In rare cases wheels were made from a solid pattern. Owing to the cost of the pattern, its failure in many instances to be correctly made, and (when made of wood) its early and sure distortion the disadvantage of this pratctice is obvious, while metal patterns in most instances were prohibitive in cost. In these methods both green-sand and loam molding was practiced. The casting produced by either method can be considered only as a blank from which the propeller must be machined. The back surface of each blade must be chipped to the templet and through this procedure chipped to such accuracy as will be required for a static balance. Inasmuch as the work done by the machine tool is confined to the driving face of the blades, not only is perfection most difficult, but corrosion will be greater because of the removal of the dense skin of the casting and the local strains set up by the pneumatic tool in chipping. To produce a finished 9-ft. propeller for a Navy destroyer required from 8 to 21 days of foundry work and about the same length of time for the machining. Through the use of the Thacher process, only as many hours are required, besides it is possible to produce a finished casting in perfect conformity with any particular propeller-wheel design.

Pre-drainage experiments have been conduct- ed at Appin, Cook, John Darling, Leichhardt, Macquarie, Metropolitan and Moura No. 2 Collieries. Appin (550 m deep) experiences particular gas problems in development drivages, and the almost pure CH4 seam gas makes difficult tiro compliance with statutory maxima in intakes and returns. Patterns of 43 mm diameter drain- a,.;e holes drilled ahead and laterally into virgin coal have improved gas conditions in working places and have allowed tolerable advance rates. Cook, Leichhardt, Metropolitan and Moura No,. 2 Collieries have experienced gas and stress phenomena ranging from conical bursts less than one tonne to full scale instantan- -us outbursts of hundreds of tonnes with tens ,f thousands of cubic metres of seam gas. Gas ~Irainage experiments with patterns of holes up a,, 200 mm diameter have been undertaken with ;,;siness monitors on the coal to establish .lative effectiveness. An adequate knowledge of the overall behavior of a rock mass at a given site is fundamental to the satisfactory design of a rock slope. The be- havior is controlled by a variety of factors, in- cluding rock type, geological structure, stress and ground water conditions. There are essentially three lines of approach that may be used to obtain information on the in-situ rock mass behavior for the purpose of the design of a rock slope: (1) Direct measurements of rock mass properties by means ol laboratory and field tests. (2) Evaluation of rock mass properties from a study of slope failure case histories and sta- tistical information on stable and unstable natural rock slopes. (3) Evaluation of in-situ behavior of rock mass by using a physical or mathematical model technique.

The chemical compositions of copper feed streams are becoming increasingly complex following the growing demand for metals and corresponding shortages of primary sources. The optimisation of process conditions requires an accurate description of phase equilibria and thermodynamics. Integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling research program on the characterisation of the complex, multi-component, multi-phase gas-slag-matte-speiss-metal-solids Cu2O-PbO-ZnO-Al2O3- CaO-MgO-FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2-S-(As-Bi-Ni-Sb-Sn-Ag-Au) system is being carried out to support companies undertaking the pyrometallurgical primary production and recycling of copper. The experiments involve high temperature equilibration in controlled gas atmospheres, rapid quenching and direct measurement of equilibrium phase compositions with quantitative microanalytical techniques, including electron probe X- ray microanalysis and Laser Ablation ICP-MS. The thermodynamic modelling is undertaken using FactSage computer package with advanced thermodynamic solution models. The continuing development of research methodologies has resulted in significant advances in research outcomes. Implementation of the results of these fundamental studies involves an ongoing collaboration of researchers and industry technologists. An overview of recent progress in research, implementation and applications in industrial practice are given in the paper. INTRODUCTION Rapidly developing technologies increase the demand for various metals in number and volumes. Modern technological devices such as mobile phones, computers, other electronic devices, have dozens of metals—all those metals have to be a) produced and b) recycled. The fast transition in mobility from fossil energy delivered through combustion to renewable energy first stored in bakeries and delivered through electric engines introduce a significant change in the metal demand in terms of both type and volume of metals. Pyrometallurgy is playing a key role in supporting these changes in our industrialised society.

In recent investigations of chloride Volatilization of gold at the Reno Station, it was found that the addition of small amounts of copper and NaCl to the charge brought about improved volatilization of the gold. The investigations described in this report were concerned with the recovery, in an aqueous medium, of fumes from chloride volatilization of gold. It was attempted to discover a suitable aqueous medium that would permit absorption, solution, or precipitation of all the volatilized gold immediately upon contact with the medium. A simple laboratory apparatus was employed to produce fumes by volatilization. To this furnace was attached an absorption train consisting of a series of chambers containing the aqueous medium, through which the fumes were drawn by suction. A satisfactory synthetic ore that contained metallic, gold in a quartz-matrix was made and utilized, enough. gold being present in a' small amount of material to permit an accurate, metallurgical balance of the volatized values' to be obtained in all the experiments.

Hydrogen sulfite has been listed (1)3/ as a possible hazard in 50 occupations, many of which are in the mineral industries. The effects of its occurrence in the petroleum industry made themselves felt more than two decades ago, resulting in a comprehensive study (2) of the toxic gases from Mexican and other high-sulfur petroleum products. The mining industry, likewise, has had cause to guard against this gas. Enough hydrogen sulfide has been found in coal and some noncoal mines during normal operations to cause severe eye irritation, some serious illness, end even fatalities. It is usually a product of the decomposition of sulfur compounds and may be produced by burning explosives containing sulfur; the gas in harmful qauntities is formed by the use of block blasting powder or by the use of dynamite in blasting sulfide ores. Hydrogen sulfide is readily soluble in water, and enough may be released from water streams in coal and noncoal mining to cause fatal poisoning it is found sometimes in stagnant water underground, particularly where ventilation currents are absent, and great care must be exercised when accumulations of such waters are disturbed, as exposure to comparatively low concentrations of the gas evolved therefrom has caused fatal accidents.

This paper .reviews some of the key developments which have been made in the synthesis of the III-V compound semiconductors and the associated progress in obtaining high-quality material for device development. The history of the investigation of the semi-conducting properties of these materials has indicated the need for synthesis techniques capable of producing rnaterial of high chemical purity and physical perfection. The progress in the area is described, and the present status of quality of several compounds is discussed. In addition, recent studies of localized epitaxial deposition of GaAs into semi-insulating GaAs substvates for the development of arrays of devices ave reviewed. In conclusion, some important areas for future research and developrnent are discussed. INTEREST in III-V compounds as semiconductors dates back to the period 1950 to 1952, when Goryunova, Ioffe, and, in particular, Welker determined that 111-V compounds were structural analogs of the group IV elements carbon, silicon, germanium, and tin and that they were also semiconductors.'-3 Since that time interest in the properties of these materials has ex- panded rapidly. During 1953 and 1954, the first reports of rectification, photoconductivity, and optical absorption in these materials came from several investigators. In 1955, recombination radiation from samples of GaAs, InP, and GaSb was reported by ~raunstein .' This radiation was produced by injected minority carriers from point and large-area contacts. From 1955 to 1960, efforts increased on preparing large, pure specimens of these materials for the study of basic physical phenomena and device exploration. By 1960, materials preparation and the understanding of the physics of some of the materials had advanced to where some very interesting and potentially useful phenomena came under study. The first observation of electric-field-induced changes in the optical absorption edge (Franz -Keldysh effect) of 111-V compounds was reported for GaAs by Moss in 1961.' In 1962 the study of recombination radiation advanced rapidly. Keyes and Quist6 and Pankove and Berkey-heiser7 reported high radiative efficientices obtained from recombination, and then the first injection electroluminescent lasers in GaAs were announced by Hall ef al.,' by Nathan et al.,O and by Quist ef al.,'O and in Ga(As, P) alloys by Holonyak and Bevacqua." When the original version of this study was published in 1972 it was evident that a problem was developing on the energy scene. The ability of the United States to find the energy supplies it needed within its own boundaries--at least in the forms desired--was declining. Production of crude oil in the United States had peaked in 1970 and was declining slowly; environmental restrictions had begun to hamper the production and consumption of high sulfur coal; natural gas reserves were beginning to dwindle; and the development of nuclear power was proceeding more slowly than originally planned. Shortfalls in energy supply were being met through the importation of increasingly larger quantities of petroleum, but supplies were adequate and the price of the imports was below that of domestic production. The energy problem was more prospective than current. In October of 1973 the prospective problem became the "Energy Crisis' when the Arab petroleum exporting countries reduced crude oil production, imposed an embargo on the shipment of crude oil to the United States, and then raised the price of crude oil in a series of large steps. This crisis was a clear demonstration of the dangers of the dependence of the United States on imported petroleum, and of the Nation's vulnerability to the actions of the oil exporting countries. Rossland is in the West Kootenay district; 5 miles north of the International boundary and 4 miles west of Columbia River at Trail. The first claim in the district was located in 1887; but there was little activity until 1890; when the showings that later became important were staked and development began. Production increased rapidly from 1; 800 tons in 1894 to a peak of 360; 000 tons in 1903; and averaged 286; 000 tons for the next 13 years. It declined sharply in 1917; and continued to decline until the closing of the main mines in 1928. Between 1933 and 1941 leasers mined a further 137; 000 tons. Total output has been about 6; 200; 000 tons; with average recovery of 0.47 oz. gold; 0.6 oz. silver; and 1 per cent copper. The total value was $82; 500; 000; of which aboµt three-quarters was in gold; the camp still leads the province in total gold produced. Ninety-eight per cent of the tonnage came from a small compact area worked by four inter-connected mines : the Le Roi (39 per cent); Centre Star (25 per cent); War Eagle (24 per cent); and Josie (10 per cent); all now owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smdting Company of Canada; Limited.

El presente texto señala el proceso «Strategic-Udy Modificado Angeles» utilizado para la producción de fierro o semiacero en Chimbote, Ancash. En ese sentido, durante la producción de aceros, es opcional el uso de fierros secundarios en la fundición (Scrap). La gran flexibilidad que ofrece el proceso permite producir tan bajo tonelaje sin sacrificar el costo de producción por tonelada de metal. Asimismo, las reparaciones pueden hacerse con gran facilidad, quitando la alimentación, drenando el horno eléctrico y cortando la corriente. Se puede operar el tonelaje deseado en una planta ya instalada con un pequeño descenso en la eficiencia. Por ello, es el método más adecuado en los lugares donde no se dispone de coke, tal es el caso de Chimbote - Perú y en donde se dispone de energía eléctrica barata, y de carbones que requieren procesos caros para su coquificación.

One of the major factors restricting an increase in the productivity of a longwall mine is lower productivity obtained in a development panel. There has been a significant improvement in gate road development, particularly in mines requiring high density roof and rib bolting within 2 m of the face. Advance rates have increased from an average of 3 m to 5 m per shift in 1985 up to an average of 5 m to 10 m per shift in 1991. In mines at shallow depths with reasonably good conditions the increase has not been that significant. Advance rates have increased from an average of 7 m to 12 ni per shift in 1985 to an average of 12 m to 15 m per shift in 1991. Compared to the United States' (US) development rates, these are much lower. Extensive research work has been carried out to minimise cutting, wheeling, support setting time, and to optimise pillar length to achieve maximum advance rates. Pillar optimisation is very important in order to expedite adverse rates. This paper investigates various development rate technologies, both present and future, and optimises pillars to improve these dev elupment rates. Pillar optimisation is based upon time and motion studies conducted at mines in the Illawara region of New' South Wales, Australia, and the basic tools of arithmetic.

"Improving the safety of underground openings and optimizing ground support systems requires reliable ground characterization. This includes understanding the joints, discontinuities, and rock strength. Joint information can be obtained from borehole cameras, but measuring in-situ rock strength is very difficult. Use of borehole probes can be an ideal and efficient way to meet this requirement. This paper discusses the development of the Rock Strength Borehole Probe (RSBP) and presents the preliminary laboratory/field test. This device can be an accurate, flexible, quick, non-disruptive, and cost-effective alternative to estimate the rock strength inside boreholes in underground mines and tunnels. In addition, the scratch testing procedure in the laboratory by means of a newly developed miniature linear cutting machine is explained. Based on the results of these tests, two equations are developed to estimate the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of the sedimentary/metamorphic rocks. These equations, are based on testing 27 different sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks by full-scale scratch tests, including the cutting tests by a miniature disc. The results show a good correlation between the normal force and the compressive strength of sedimentary rock if the depth of the scratch is known. No significant correlation was observed for igneous rocks, due to the impacts of grain size.INTRODUCTIONEstimated rock mass properties are essential input for geomechanical studies and stability analysis for any structure constructed in or with rock. The availability of geological information is the crucial component of rock mass classification. One of the important parameters in evaluating rock mass properties is the intact rock strength. This parameter is usually measured by testing the core samples, obtained from exploration boreholes. These samples are subsequently tested in geomechanics laboratories. The test results offer limited information about the rock at the few boring locations despite all the efforts and costs. In addition, these results may not necessarily be representative of the behavior of the rock in the field as the test cannot provide the insitu condition of the ground."

I. Introductory LEAD sulphate occurs as anglesite, and is formed in every roasting of lead sulphides or sulpho-salts containing lead. In smelting in the blast furnace an ore containing natural or artificial lead sulphate, a large part of the sulphur present goes to the formation of the intermediary product matte which requires further treatment for the recovery of the values it contains. It is therefore of importance to study the behavior of lead sulphate at elevated temperatures, both without and with reducing agents, especially as the information available gives data which are more or less conflicting. II. Decomposition of Lead Sulphate by Heat The dissociation of PbSO4 into PbO and S03 or S02 and 0 has been discussed by many metallurgists. The following data are considered to be representative. Doeltz and Graumann1 found that PbSO4 was not affected by heat at 800° C.; that dissociation began at 900° C., and was rapid at 1,000° when the salt lost in 1 ½ hr. 14.3 per cent. of its weight, the dry salt containing 26.43 per cent. SO3. Hofman and Wanjukow2 summarize their work upon the dissociation of metallic sulphates with the statement that the decomposition of PbSO4 begins at 195° C., but progresses very slowly, with the formation of the basic salt 6PbO.5S03 at 705°; that this salt undergoes a transformation at 847°, begins to be decomposed at 888°, to sinter at 896°, and to fuse at 910°; rapid dissociation begins at 952°, and is accompanied by volatilization of PbO; retardations at 958° and 962° indicate an acceleration of decomposition which, however, is not complete. Proske3 found that PbSO4 gave off at 900° C. in 30 min. only 0.63 per cent. of its SO3, and that the loss increased with
