Research workers from the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives at the Mont Chateau Lodge, Morgantown, W. Va., on May 30-31, 1973, to discuss the current status of methane control in eastern U.S. coal mines. The opening remarks, the eight technical presentations, and the discussions of the members of a government-industry panel are published here for the benefit of those concerned with the control of methane in coal mines. In addition, an introduction has been added to present the background of work in this field.

This paper describes a mineral dressing process for the upgrading of tin ores. The process described is called 'agglomeration' and. is similar in many respects to flotation. Many variables have been examined experimentally both on batch and continuous operations and are reported upon herein... Using a Mt. Pleasant tin ore, assaying 0.5% Sn, an upgrading to 8% Sn, with a recovery of 95% could be obtained by this process.

"INTRODUCTION It is a recognized fact that in the coal-mining industry coal dust must be allayed to promote the safety and health of underground workers. The Bureau of Mines has been cognizant of the hazards of coal dust for many years, and the necessity of controlling such dust was acknowledged when the Federal Mine Safety Code was formulated. Accumulations of coal dust increase the explosion hazard in a bituminous-coal mine and facilitate the propagation of an explosion. Some of the coal dust produced in mining is inhaled by the workers and contributes to respiratory infection. Impairment of vision and personal discomfort resulting from working in dense clouds of coal dust reflect unfavorably on the efficiency of workmen. Considerable coal dust, originating at the working face, is carried in the ventilating current and deposited elsewhere in the mine, thereby increasing the explosion hazard. It is apparent, therefore, that if coal dust could be allayed effectively at its points of origin, the dust-explosion hazard in bituminous-coal mines would be reduced greatly.Although dust control is practiced in many bituminous-coal and lignite mines, the extent and effectiveness of control for the, entire industry-is not generally known. The purpose of this circular is to present such information clearly, and to encourage coal-mine operators to install dust- allaying equipment.Factual data on dust-allaying practices at working faces in a large number of the bituminous-coal and lignite mines in the United States were .compiled from reports on recent Federal inspections of these mines, The information is presented in tabular form to permit review of the dust-allaying practices of a substantial part of the industry, by States, and also according to employment, and loading practice."

The power required to circulate a gas-solids suspension was determined using a centrifugal compressor and a closed system. The suspension consisted of 18- to 40-micron glass beads in a mixture of 89 percent N2 and 11 percent CO2 at 20 psig. Solids-to-gas (S/G) ratios w re O to 2.2 lb/lb; gas flow rates were l.2 to 2.5 lb/min. Power requirement was found to follow the relationship hp t = hp(. + l), where hp t = the total power, and hpg = the power required for pure gas.

The efficient operation of a blast furnace is primarily dependent upon efficient contact between the descending stream of solid materials and the ascending stream of gas. The United States Bureau of dines is conducting a program of research dealing with the interior of the present-day furnace. The work is being carried oat by.(1) observations on commercial furnaces end (2) experiments in the laboratory. Through the courtesy of the officials of the Illinois Steel Co. it was possible to make a detailed investigation of the interior of the shaft of Number.4 furnace at the company's South Works, South Chicago, Ill. The experimental work is to be reported in a U. S. Bureau of Mines bulletin which will include the results of several thousand observations on the interior of the shaft of this furnace. Such of the data as are presented later in this paper constitute only a brief summary.

The development of present methods of pillar extraction has evolved from the very earliest of hand mining operations which were limited in scope by venti- lation and transport considerations. Conservation and safety considerations also have led to the current shortwall operations with conventional equipment and powered supports. The shortwall methods have had significant effects on safety, costs, con- servation, flexibility, and other aspects of pillar extraction. The present stage falls short of the ideal but is some guide to prediction in what direction may lie the ideal methods for the future.

A key step in changing coals to fluid fuels and chemicals is the conversion of coal to synthesis gas by gasification with steam and oxygen. As oxygen represents one of the largest single expenses in gasification, its cost is a vital factor in the economy of the process. At present, the most economical method for producing tonnage oxygen is by the conventional rectification of liquefied air. Several alternate methods have been proposed for producing oxygen from air: (1) methods based on physical or chemical sorption of oxygen from air by liquids or solids or (2) the oxidation of certain inorganic com-pounds to higher oxides unstable at higher temperature levels. Economic limitations are discussed by which these methods may be evaluated. Chelated metals of the salcomine type are promising chemical sorbents of oxygen from air. This report covers a study of the reversible sorption of oxygen by salcomine and other chelates. The presence of water in the salcomine structure was verified; it is the loss of this water that causes slow deterioration of salcomine during cycling.

The work to be described was part of an exploratory research program directed toward identifying potentially useful but little known reactions in extractive metallurgy. In particular, the major copper sulfide minerals, as a group, have long been considered insoluble in nonoxidizing acids (e.g. Forward and Barren, 1J60; Parsons and Ingraham, 1970; Peters et al. 1972). This generalization was considered to include nonoxidizing conditions in warm aqueous MC1 solutions (Ingraham et al. 1972) and, indeed, was consistent with our own chemical and mineralogical experience. On the other hand, under hydrothermal conditions, copper and sulfide species are carried in solution and deposited as sulfides in mineralized veins. The question that poses itself is: what are the mildest conditions of temperature and fluid composition under which commercially important copper sulfide minerals can be solubilized in the absence of an oxidizing agent? A reference to H2S formation during oxygen-sulfuric acid pressure leaching (Warren, 1958) of chalcopyrite, when the oxygen partial pressure was allowed to fall, provided a clue. In the present study, experimentation with chalcopyrite concentrate in dilute hydrochloric acid, under re flux conditions (in Pyrex flasks) and with an inert purge gas, revealed substantial amounts of H2S production and iron solubilization, cite negligible copper solubilization, after 2 ½ -4 days. Under comparable conditions the extent of reaction with dilute sulfuric, acetic and phosphoric acids was markedly less.

The mining industry is known to be a potential major contributor to the industrial development of any economy. Large-scale mining has been going on in Zambia for the last 100 years. The impact of mining in Zambia has been to create a development corridor along the line of rail to the Copperbelt Province, where hitherto, mining was concentrated, and then to develop a large consolidated high-density economic zone covering an area of about 72 km by 60km. This area is home to a number of very large integrated copper/cobalt mining complexes. The mining zone has expanded to the Northwestern Province in the last 10 years, where the largest copper mine in Africa now exists, having produced about 300 000 tonnes of copper in 2011. The total output of the Zambian mining industry is now about 820 000 tonnes per annum with projections of reaching 1.5 million by 2015, due to new Greenfield investments expected to come online by then. These new mining industry developments have come on the back of strong and sustained high base metal prices, in the last 10 years or so, due to demand mainly from China and India. This new lease of life has increased the contribution of the sector to the national treasury. The mining industry in Zambia has undergone a very important ownership restructuring with the sale of the previously Government owned parastatal, Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) which dominated the sector, to allow for private sector participation. The privatization process lasted from about 1995 to about 2002. The recent growth of the mining sector has unfortunately not been matched by an adequate supply of skilled manpower for various reasons. These include: (i) A lack of strong in-house training strategies by the new mine owners (ii) Decrease in industry support to the training institutions (iii) The demise of and restructuring of ZCCM which has consequently limited the Government human resources planning tools for the mining sector (iv) The cyclic nature for the fortunes of the sector has lead to fluctuating interest of student recruitment into training institutions (v) Limitations, both staff and equipment, in the training institutions (vi) A re-structuring of the training institutions This paper examines the current status, and student output from tertiary training institutions for the mining sector in Zambia. This is then compared to the skilled labour demands of the sector. The various cause and effect issues are considered and a proposal on how this skills gap could be addressed sustainably is proposed. The exact nature of the changes that take place in the iron-nickel alloys, giving rise to the interesting and useful expansion alloys in the Invar range, has yet to be fully understood. Similarly, the ternary iron-nickel-cobalt alloys, which also possess such commercially useful expansion characteristics,1,2 are concerned with transformations that appear to be identical with those found in the parent iron-nickel alloys. The investigations on iron-nickel alloys in the range 26 to 29 per cent Ni have been reported by several authors3-9 wherein it is shown that there are factors other than temperature, such as stress and grain size, which play an important part in determining the temperature at which the low-temperature transformation takes place. It will be shown in this paper that the ternary iron-nickcl-cobalt alloys having nickel contents comparable to the alloys mentioned above behave in a parallel manner. The alloys in the range of 26 to 31 per cent Ni and 16 to 21 per cent Co have a coefficient of expansion of about 4.0 X 10-6 per degree Centigrade, and the alloys in this range of composition find considerable application in making glass-to-metal seals, because these expansion properties so well match commercial glasses. The behavior of these alloys is not a simple matter, for it has been observed in alloys of 28.5 per cent Ni and 18.5 Co that severe working ran cause the appearance of a second phase having a needlelike structure similar to the martensite structure in carhon steels. Fig. 1 shows the change brought about in an alloy of this composition when a strip of this material was cut with tin shears. This second phase has been identified as the body-centered cubic alpha phase, and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the results of some of the preliminary investigations in the study of the changes involved in these alloys. En ese sentido, el texto plantea una alternativa hidrometalúrgica de solución para la recuperación de plata contenida en menas de hierro del tipo óxido sulfato, considerándola como una etapa de pretratamiento con una solución básica de hidróxido de sodio, de forma que esta tecnología permite beneficiar menas de naturaleza refractaria que contienen significativas cantidades de metales preciosos a un costo más económico.

The coal resources of the Singleton- Muswellbrook area of New South Wales are of major importance to Australia, and are likely to play a significant role in meeting the expanding demands for energy in many countries of the world. Coal resources of 45 thousand million tonnes of which 15 thousand million tonnes lie at a depth of less than 200m have been estimated. The history of coal mining in the area commenced in the mid 1800's and has been one of fluctuations in production but of rapid expansion in more recent years. It is destined to become the largest coal producing area in New South Wales. Coal is being won from the area by strip mining, open pit mining and by underground means. The techniques involved are described. The area is well endowed with infra- structure such as modern towns, railways, road- ways and access to port facilities. Production of both coking coal and steaming coal is expected to rise significantly within the next 25 years. A large proportion of the State's anticipated increased production to between 117 and 177 million tonnes by the year 2000 is likely to come from this area.

"INTRODUCTION During the past few years, the development of millisecond-delay electric blasting caps has made possible a more flexible control over timing the firing of individual charges in blasting, The use of these caps has proved especially productive in quarry blasting and in numerous construction operations, but their use in underground mining is developing more slowly, although in some cases, as the solution to a difficult breaking problem, they have been well-received. When used in metal-mine drifts, the general objection is that the broken rock is thrown too far. In nearly all cases, however, use of millisecond-delay caps results in better fragmentation of the rock and a lower powder consumption per ton of rock broken.Prom 1949 to 1952, several series of experiments were conducted at the Mount Weather, Va., Experimental mine in conjunction with driving a 6- by 10-toot ventilation raise. 3/4/ The raise-round experiments in this 238-foot shaft, using millisecond-delay electric blasting caps in various drill-round patterns, are the subject of this report.SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONSAll rounds discussed in this report were drilled in the hard rock (epidosite and greenstone) of the ventilation raise at Mount Weather Experimental mine (figs. 1 and 2). The drill-round patterns varied from 28- to 32 holes and from a V-cut design to one having no cut boles at all. With the exception of the first two rounds, all blasting was done with millisecond-delay electric blasting caps. In all rounds 60-percent ammonia gelatin dynamite was used and holes were stemmed with two cartridges of sand stemming."

This paper discusses the lubrication of surface and underground mining machinery and equipment from the standpoint of machine components. The machine components considered are bearings, cylinders, gears, chains, couplings, fluid drives, hydraulic systems, screws and wire ropes. The best selection of lubricants for these machine components, and for sub-divisions of the components, are outlined. They form general recommendations, for average operating conditions in both surface and under-ground mining operations. The American Petroleum Institute's service classification of both engine crankcase oils and gear oils is de-scribed and used in recommending products for these applications. The practical aspect of lubrication is kept foremost in the recommendations, which are designed to meet the requirements of a wide variety of equipment with the minimum number of lubricants. THE lubrication of mining machinery and equipment presents a variety of problems peculiar to the industry. The type of mine, the ambient temperature, water, dust, and operating and maintenance practices, as well as the age and condition of the equipment, are variables which have to be considered in making lubricant recommendations.

The basis for the selection of the ultimate pit for an open pit mining operation is generally opaque. Some form of value-based analysis will generally guide the final decision; however, the value will often gradually plateau whilst the ultimate pit size continues to increase. There is no established framework to guide specialists in the selection of the ultimate pit, with such decisions regularly made on a somewhat arbitrary basis. The key component that is missing from the analyses typically used to select the size of the ultimate pit is risk. Once risk is quantified within the analysis framework, the decision-making range is significantly reduced, and the process for selecting the ultimate pit becomes more consistent, replicable, and defensible. This paper provides an approach to including risk in the process used to select the ultimate pit.

The history of firedamp is the same as that of coal: The initial stage was the accumulation of vegetation, which was converted into peat under certain local conditions, then lignite, bituminous coal, and finally anthracite. These deposits ceased to increase owing to inundation that deposited earthy sediment, sometimes as much as several tens of meters (several tens of yards). The vegetable matter, whether it was covered with sediment or not, began to ferment. The basic organic components of the vegetable matter are: Cellulose, lignin, and wax and resin in varying proportions, according to the different kinds of vegetable matter. There are, in addition, some impurities, generally mineral.

The total number of petroleum refineries in the United States on January 1, 1958, was 318 and their total crude-oil throughput capacity was 9,407,707 barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines annual survey. During 1957, 3 new refineries began operating while 4 refineries were retired. Although there was 1 less refinery, the total crude-oil throughput capacity at the beginning of 1958 was 284,033 barrels per day, or 3 percent, more than the January 1, 1957, level. During 1957 all refinery districts showed increases in capacity. The largest increase, 27 percent, occurred in the West Coast district followed by the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district with 14-percent increase and the Texas Gulf Coast district with 13-percent increase. The national increase in capacity had the effect of raising the capacity of the average refinery from 28,601 to 29,584 barrels per day. New crude-oil capacity under construction on January 1, 1958, totaled 185,265 barrels, and an additional 297,885 barrels capacity was reported building as replacement for existing facilities. Included in total new construction were 2 new refineries, 1 in Washington and another in Texas, with planned processing capacities of 45,000 barrels and 8,550 barrels per day, respectively.

"The Oka Carbonatite and Alkaline Complex is a Lower Cretaceous intrusive body of the Monteregian petrographic province. Carbonate rocks of various types, and associated alkaline rocks of the ijolite and okaite suites, are distributed in a double ring-dyke structure 4 Yi miles long by 1 1/2 miles across. Alnoite and alrioite breccia pipes intrude all rocks of the Complex and indicate, from inclusions, that a cover of Palaeozoic rocks existed at the time of emplacement.The results of radiometric, magnetic and gravity surveys of the Complex are compiled and discussed both with respect to the regional pattern and, locally, the bed-rock geology. The Complex is characterized by high-intensity anomalies.Exploration activities started during 1953, and mining operations began in 1961 on the property of St. Lawrence Columbium and Metals Corporation, at one time the world's largest producer of niobium concentrates. Because of the boudinaged and fractured nature of many of the rocks and the variability in grade of the ore minerals, the role of the mining geologist is both demanding and exacting. Rock types are varied and their mutual relation-ships ambiguous, the minerals are rare and complex, and close geological control of the ore is needed in the mine and in the mill. Closely spaced diamond drill holes are needed for mining control, and the ore-waste contact is defined mainly by assay results.In the exploration for 'carbonatites' in Eastern Canada, aeromagnetic surveys are judged to be the best exploration tool, followed in decreasing order by the search for circular structures on aerial photographs, regional gravity surveys and radiometric surveys."
