"The limestone deposit utilized by one of the plants of the Universal Atlas Cement Co. is covered in part by a stratum of cherty limestone. If this overlying deposit could be utilized by removing the excess of chert economically, quarry costs could be reduced and the amount of rock economically available would be increased greatly. On account of the distribution of flint and limestone, a product fairly free of flint can be obtained until the quarry face is about 50 or 55 feet high. As the face is worked farther back into the hill, the comparatively clean stone is overlain with a constantly increasing amount of high-flint limestone. If this flint remained with the limestone, there would be a prohititively high silica ratio in the finished cement; if the flinty layer were removed as overburden a very large tonnage would be handled and much good stone lost. Consequently it was felt that means should be devised for separating the flint from the limestone after it reaches the plant.The investigation was undertaken by the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Universal Atlas Cement Co. and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.CONSIDERATION OF PROCESSESMany schemes for the separation of Minerals are based on differences in the specific gravities of the minerals to be separated. In this case the flint has a specific gravity of approximately 2.62 while the limestone averages about 2.70. This differential is not large enough to permit separation by any method based on specific gravity. Furthermore, all the limestone particles in any given sample are not alike; usually about 10 percent of them have a specific gravity the same as, or lower than, the flint."

Two air classification systems were built and tested as separatory devices for recovering the nonferrous metal values from shredded automotive nonmagnetic reject scrap. A horizontal air system with a capacity up to 16 tons per hour was used to obtain preliminary separations, and a smaller capacity vertical system was used as a cleaning device. Shredded automobile reject material containing aluminum, copper, and zinc values of about $55 per ton were air-classified in the horizontal elutriator. Ninety-six percent of the metal was recovered in a 74-percent metal concentrate. Tandem operation of both classifiers recovered 92 percent of the metal in an 80-percent concentrate while rejecting 87 percent of the nonmetallics. Heavy media separation of the air-classified concentrate produced an overall recovery of 91 percent of the metal in the form of a 99-percent metal concentrate.

More than 700,000 feet of diamond drilling was completed in the Blind River area between 1953 and 1958. Much of this drilling was at depths which are still not usual in North America. However, as the tendency is to deeper holes, factual data from the Blind River operation may well provide information of value in future programs. Rates of drilling decreased with in-creasing depth, but uncommonly good rates (an average of over 50 feet per day over more than 4,000 feet of hole) were achieved with proper engineering and care. Costs varied as contractors and geologists became familiar with the area Hole deviation in the Blind River area was locally severe and control of the hole trace became a major problem. Careful surveying was necessary and found to be highly re-liable. It was found that control of the hole trace above 1,500 feet was much more difficult than at depths below 1,500 feet. Cyprus Pima Mining Company is located in the Mineral Hill District of southern Arizona, approximately 22 miles south-southeast of Tucson. Cyprus Pima Mining Company is owned 50.01% by Cyprus Mines Corporation, 24.99% by Utah International Incorporated, and 25% by Union Oil Company of California, with Cyprus having the management responsibility. Cyprus Pima's history has been one of continued expansion from an initial plant of 3,000 TPD in 1957; 6,000 TPD in 1963; 18,000 TPD in 1966; 36,000 TPD in 1967; and 53,500 TPD in 1972. The major reason for Expansion IV was that a large volume of low-grade ore had to be moved to get at a higher grade ore in the course of proper pit development. With mining costs already defrayed, this relatively hard, low-grade material became economically profitable for subsequent milling and concentrating treatment. Similar material previously stockpiled was available for ore treatment. In an effort to meet the continuing search for lower unit costs, the largest milling and concentrating equipment had to be examined. The management of Cyprus Pima Mining Company began investigating autogenous, and semi-autogenous milling in 1964 when two carloads of ore selected from the Cyprus Pima pit were sent to the Koppers--Hardinge Operation at York, Pennsylvania for testing. One car contained approximately 40 tons of hard arkosite and the other contained approximately 40 tons of ore classified as soft Hornfels. The purpose of the testing was to determine the amenability of both ore types to autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding.

In January last I published in the Engineering and Mining Journal a table giving, with a considerable degree of accuracy, the production of anthracite coal for the year 1874. At that time it mas impossible to give any correct estimate of the production of bituminous coal, for the returns I had been able to secure from such distant and scattered districts were not always forwarded punctually, and the work of .obtaining anything like a true estimate of the coal mined in districts from which I was unable to obtain official returns was both laborious and tedious. As will be seen from the detailed reports furnished herewith, I have succeeded in obtaining tolerably accurate returns of 20,093,704 tons; and upon careful revision by numerous well-informed local authorities, my first estimate of the amount of coal not officially returned to me has grown very considerably; indeed, as I get more information on the subject I find that our bituminous coal production greatly exceeds the amount we have been accustomed to hear it placed at, aggregating as it does, 26,465,704 tons. Mr. Andrew Roy, State Inspector of Mines for Ohio, has reported the production of Ohio at 4,168,445 tons, while his first estimates were but 3,820,000 tons; and similarly, in other cases, the more full the returns direct from the mines the more incorrect do I find all previous reports. I am able now to furnish, not an accurate statement, indeed, but by far the most full and reliable one that has yet been published of our coal production. The amount of labor involved in obtaining this admittedly imperfect report has been simply enormous. 1. INTRODUCTION. THE general impression regarding the preparation of merchantable anthracite is that it is confined to a colossal, grimy structure, called a "coal-breaker." This name is misnomer; for the desired result is not to break the coal, but to prevent its being broken. Preparation may be said to begin at the face of the chamber, with the mining and loading of the coal. Local conditions vary, not only in the same field or basin, but also in the same mine, so that there is no fixed empirical rule governing the method of blasting or cutting coal. Tests should be made, when possible, to determine the explosive, or the mechanical coal-cutter, which will produce the largest percentage of what are locally known as " lump " and " prepared sizes " of anthracite. The prepared sizes are those mostly consumed for domestic purposes. All other sizes might be called by-products of the anthracite industry; for they are not especially desirable, being the degradation resulting from the mining and handling of a brittle or laminated material. Being low in volatile combustible matter, anthracite burns most successfully when nearly of a uniform size, permitting the easy passage of air through the voids. This accounts for the large number of sizes into which the coal is separated. Table I. gives the various sizes, the diameter of ring over and through which each size is made, and the usual purpose for which it is employed.

When a flat-lying mineral deposit such as a coal seam is mined, some coal is left to separate the roof and floor so that miners and machines can safely mine the seam. The mineral left is in the form of mine pillars. If too much is taken, support problems and unsafe working conditions result. If too little is taken, the mining operation will be unable to compete economically with other mines. Therefore, one must select pillars of the optimal size to maximize mining recovery and minimize risk to miners and equipment. Later, if the pillar support is no longer needed and the surface can be allowed to subside the thickness of the coal seam, then the pillar support can be removed to increase mining recovery, and initial pillar size is not as critical. Only a small part of the information available on pillar design can be presented here. The purpose of this report is to summarize some of the work done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others on pillar design, which is reported in the literature from 1833 to the present, and present rock mechanics test results that aid in understanding mine pillar behavior. The variable names used are those of the authors cited. This results in multiple use of some variable names.

Posteriormente Buchanam demuestra la existencia de módulos ferro-manganíferos en aguas poco profundas ( 200 m. ), de composición diferente de las provenientes de aguas profundas. De otro lado, el trabajo señala también la división de los minerales marinos en tres categorías: las sales disueltas y en organismos, los sedimentos y depósitos en el suelo profundo submarino y los depósitos consolidados e inconsolidados de la plataforma continental. Por último, se describe los procesos de beneficio y las ventajas de la explotación de los recursos submarinos en el futuro de la minería submarina.

THE winning of metals from Nature has been advanced to a degree of efficiency that commands admiration even in this Machine Age. Economy of human effort underground, in surface plants, and in treatment works, and better means of performing all manner of operations have cut costs and im¬proved products to an extent that seems far beyond the wildest imagin¬ings of those that labored in the days of hand mining and muscular metallurgy. Principles and methods borrowed from other professions and sciences - mechanical engineering, chemistry, and physics-all have con¬tributed to the rapid development of ore production and treatment, but no small part of the achievements must be credited to the free exchange of ideas within the industry itself and mass attack upon problems of mutual concern. The esprit de corps or class consciousness that has contributed so effectively to the progress of the metal industries has been less apparent among nonmetallic mineral producers. As a class they have been handicapped by inadequate contact with the metal-mining fraternity as well as among themselves.

The conversion of dilute sulfur dioxide gas into sulfuric acid by autoxidation in mechanical cells of the flotation or gas absorber types was investigated. Bench-scale tests were made with sulfur dioxide-air mixtures to determine the influence of several factors on autoxidation of sulfur dioxide, using iron and manganese salts as catalysts. The laboratory investigation subsequently was extended to pilot plant acid-making tests, using a modified turbomixer gas absorber having a 12-inch-diameter impeller. Sulfur dioxide gas was produced for the tests by roasting pyrite in a fluidized-bed reactor. In the better tests, made with manganese sulfate as the catalyst, the equivalent of 1,000 pounds of anhydrous H2SO4 was produced per 24 hours as a 10-percent solution; power consumption was 0.2 kwhr per pound of equivalent anhydrous acid synthesized. The batch and continuous tests demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing dilute sulfuric acid by autoxidation of sulfur dioxide gas in mechanical cells when converting pyrite roaster or waste smelter gases.

Since early 1973, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has been actively engaged in the utilization of coal mine refuse in the design and construction of highway embankments. The Soils and Geological Engineering Division of the Bureau of Materials, Testing and Research has the task of managing the program which includes field investigations, laboratory testing, engineering evaluation, planning, coordination, implementation, construction control, and review of construction performance. The objectives of the utilization program, in removing colliery refuse banks and utilizing the material in construction, are the environmental and aesthetic rehabilitation of those areas in the Anthracite and Bituminous coal fields which have been plagued for such a long time by air and water pollution, and unsightly landscapes; and the economic rehabilitation of those areas occupied by refuse banks by providing usable land which can now be developed as residential, business, or industrial sites.

"INTRODUCTION The use of thermodynamic calculations to answer practical problems in metallurgy, especially those that are relatively difficult to test experimentally, is rapidly becoming a conventional method of procedure. Nevertheless, these methods cannot he applied effectively until the fundamental thermodynamic constants used for them have become available either by direct experiment or by recalculation of data already existing in more or less undigested form.In an attempt to collect such data far the compounds of lead and the antimony group the incentive has been to make a preliminary survey that will disclose the gaps or questionable phases of available information and to collect data that may be used to answer certain rather practical problems presented by operating metallurgists.This report comprises three sections; the first gives the basis of selection of the constants which may now be given or estimated, and the later sections discuss the application of the figures obtained to two of the more interesting problems.The reader will discover that many of the quantities involve critical study of a number of more or less discordant observations. Although certain data could be rejected on the basis of thermodynamic comparisons, it must not be overlooked that many of the figures are the results of rational estimates rather than exact experiment. The use of thermodynamic methods to control and partly authenticate such estimates is one of its most valuable characteristics for the practising metallurgist or chemist, who cannot check by direct experiment each property of the materials which he converts to usable form.Nevertheless, while it is definitely possible in certain instances that the final figure selected for the heat or free energy of a process or substance may be in error by as much as a few hundred to a few thousand calories per formula weight, questionable figures are usually revealed by the thermodynamic calculations made. When quantities of such degree of accuracy are, and they often must be, used for estimating an unknown reaction, the result often gives no more than the order of magnitude of the desired quantities. Yet even in these extreme cases the answer is far more reliable and valuable than an unordered guess or a conclusion based on incorrect data."

This paper, describing the operation of the Gifford Hill & Co. plant at Hoot Spur near Texarkana, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining and preparing gravel and sand throughout the United States. These tapers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. Although the publication of total costs might not be advisable in some instances yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The plant described combines some features of dredging and some of dry-pit operation, as material is excavated in a dry pit with a drag line, hauled to the plant in standard-gage cars, and then pumped. This operation should be of special interest to operators whose deposits contain a large quantity of clay.

Large-scale shear apparatus is designed to investigate the shear hehaviour of simulated soft rock joints under constant normal stifmess condition. Regular saw-teeth profiles having inclinations between 9.5" and 26.5" have been tested. The strength envelope based on these test results indicates that predictions made by Panon (1966) are accurate for the lower asperity angles. However, for higher asperity angles, Patton's model overestimates the shear strength especially in the low to medium normal stress range. In contrast, while Barton's model (1973) is realistic for Constant Normal Load (CNL) condition, it seems to be inappropriate for modelling the shear behaviour of soft joints under Constant Normal Stiffness (CNS) condition. An empirical strength envelope for the prediction of peak shear strength of joints is proposed in this study to account for the change in normal stress and surface degradation during CNS shearing.

Cameroon's mining industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. The value of petroleum output was estimated at $1 billion.2 The 1982 gross domestic product (GOP) was approximately $8.4 billion. During 1981, crude oil export revenues increased in value 30%, comprising approximately 56% of Cameroon's total export earnings. The 1982-87 5-year plan emphasized, hydrocarbon and agricultural development and targeted the exploitation of bauxite and clay deposits. New petroleum legislation was promulgated on November 26, 1982. Public Law No. 82-20 detailed hydrocarbon companies' obligations concerning oil and gas discoveries and exploitation. In general, the Cameroon Government has participated in joint ventures with private companies and has levied a 57.5% petroleum tax plus adjustable royalties. Exploration expenses were paid by concession holding companies, and the Government in the past has reimbursed 50% of expenses under certain conditions.

"Mining OperationsOre will be mined by open pit techniques. Because of the high grade of the deposit and the low strip ratio, mining rates are small relative to most other open pit operations.The ore deposit is located in the valley of the main fork of Red Dog Creek. The bulk of the deposit is located on the southwestern flank of the creek, but mineralization does traverse the creek in both the north and east directions.Erosion has exposed the orebody in a number of locations, and has resulted in oxidation of the mineralization closer to the surface. Although much of this oxide material is very high grade, it leaches readily and, at least in the initial phases of the operation, will be stockpiled and not treated in the concentrator.During construction, 2.3 million mt. (2.5 million st.) of overburden and waste will be stripped from the orebody to expose ore for initial operations. Competent non-mineralized waste will be used to build roads and waste dumps, but the bulk of material removed consists of oxide or ice-rich soils and weathered rock which is not suitable for construction.The annual ore mining rate will be 1.9 million mt. (21. million st.). The strip ratio will start off at 1.2 to 1, falling to 1.0 to 1 by year 5 and ultimately to 0.8 to 1.Bench heights are set at 7.6 m (25 ft). Pit slopes will vary depending on the material present in the wall. The slope, through competent waste and the sulphide package, was set at 45 degrees. This is flattened to 26 degrees (i.e. 2: 1) through overburden and Upper Kivalina shales. The Kivalina Shales are an ice-rich shale whose carbonate matrix has been leached out and which exhibits little or no strength as it thaws. In addition, a 100 ft containment berm will be left in the wall below overburden and Kivalina."

An investigation of hazardous surface openings of abandoned and inactive underground mines in the Black Hills area of South Dakota has revealed: (1) tracing legal ownership of mineral claims via county courthouses is confusing, complex, and oftentimes misleading, (2) in general, the selected mine openings in this investigation are to be considered relatively high in risks and hazard potential which poses a threat to the general public, (3) mine closure procedures and designs can generally be categorically implemented depending on the overall situation of the particular mine opening with subsequent unit costs estimates, (4) few preventive state or federal legal measures exist to date concerning mine closures, and (5) liability damages relating to mine opening accidents usually involve expensive and complex common law cases.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains analyses and related source data for 224 natural as samples from 18 States. Of the total, 191 sam¬ples were collected during calendar year 1981. The remaining 33 samples were collected during previous years, but releases, granting permission to publish were not received until 1981. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by the mass spectrometer and special helium apparatus described previously (1-2).3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Twenty-five publications have presented the results of 12,827 gas analyses made prior to 1981. The first three bulletins (1-3) contain analyses and related data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960; these bulletins have been supplemented annually by information circulars (4-17, 19-24) containing 7,609 analyses of samples collected since 1960.

Both immediate and long-range economic factors are associated with blending anthrafines to produce metallurgical cokes, and they warrant careful consideration of the technology of carbonization of blends containing significant proportions of inert substances in general and anthrafines in particular. This situation has resulted in numerous publications dealing with various phases of the overall problem, particular emphasis being placed on the effects of inert substances on the yields and quality of cokes produced. Because relatively little attention has been given to the expansion behavior of coal blends containing inert substances, an investigation of this problem was undertaken using the Bureau of Mines sole-heated oven. Since experiments in the sole-heated oven do not measure wall pressures directly, a new method of interpretation of sole-heated oven data, which permits estimates of wall pressures, has been proposed.
