It is known that austenitic chromium-nickel steels that have free carbide in the grain boundaries are subject to intergranu-lar corrosion. It is difficult to detect such a susceptible condition in a fabricated article because present test methods require a sample section for examination and in most cases this is difficult to obtain. The question of the nature and prevention of intergranular corrosion in austenitic stainless steels has been ably discussed by Bain and co-workers1-3 and by other investigator4-10 The present methods of study subject samples to corrosive conditions in such reagents as the Strauss solution, a mixture of copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. Such tests usually require at least 72 hr. to run. Various methods of measuring the degree of sensitization have been employed, such as the measurement of electrical resistivity, magnetic measuremerits, measurement of the degree of cracking produced on bending over a malldrel, and microscopic studies. The detection of carbides at the grain boundaries by metallographic polishing and etching methods is tedious and requires a skilled operator. A recent report on such methods of carbide detection is given by the American Society for Testing Materials Subcommittee VI of Committee A.-1011 and by Arness.12 The present investigation was undertaken to develop a simple test procedure for detecting carbide precipitation or susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The test is designed for use in the plant and for the testing of fabricated structures. Carbide precipitation, the factor leading to susceptibility to corrosion, is produced by heating the alloy in the temperature range 800° to 1600°F., as in welding, in improper annealing or in service where such temperatures are met. The connection between such precipitation and susceptibility to corrosion has been thoroughly discussed, as has been the use of stabilizing addition elements to prevent precipitation. Experimental Method A small area of the steel under test is subjected to an anodic treatment in a cell that can be 'lamped Onto a a Or an actual structure. The cell and electrical circuit used are illustrated in Fig. I. The cell C is lead, joined to the steel plate D and insulated from it by a short piece of rubber tubing E. The cell is forced tightly against the steel plate by a spring Or clamping device. The seal formed by the rubber against the steel plate is sufficient to retain the liquid bath inside the cell. The spot treated can be made any shape desired, depending on the shape of the rubber gasket. The cell illustrated polishes a circular spot about 3/8- diameter' The bath consists of 60 per cent (by weight) sulphuric acid to which is added 5 ml. per liter of Glycyrrhiza extract (U.S.P.). The cell requires about 2 to 2.5

Caesium, rubidium, and lithium are sometimes described as the minor or rarer alkali metals. They generally occur together in nature, although, lithium is distributed more widely and is far more abundant than either of the other two. The chemical, and even the physical, properties of these three elements can best be considered In conjunction with the more familiar members of the alkali group, sodium and potassium. The five elements lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and caesium show an interesting gradation properties from member to member with the increase in atomic weights. All are silvery white and soft enough to be cut with a knife. They tarnish rapidly in air and decompose water at ordinary temperatures. The lowest temperature at which the action of the several metals on water can be de¬tected is -98°C. for sodium, -105°C, for potassium, 108°C. for rubidium, and -116°C. for caesium. "INTRODUCTION The fuel requirements for industrial and domestic consumers in New England, in normal times, are supplied almost entirely by fuel oil, anthracite, and bituminous coal. A shortage of these fuels occurred during the war. This shortage was caused by (1) The diversion of oil to military uses; (2) the use of railroad and boat facilities that ordinarily would transport coal for the transportation of war materiel; (3) the inability of coal mines to apply the increased demand for coal which resulted from the conversion from oil to coal by domestic and industrial consumers; and (4) the increased demand of war industries for coal. Because of this critical fuel situation, an investiga¬tion was made of possible sources of fuel nearer to points of consumption in New England. Meta-anthracite, which is a satisfactory fuel for some purposes, had been mined in Massachusetts and Rhode Island many years ago. However, the introduction of freer-burning anthracite and bituminous coal into New England markets resulted in the abandonment of these mines.The coal mined in the vicinity of Portsmouth on Aquidneck Island, Newport County, R. I., had been used successfully for smelting copper ore and for fuel. It is reported that this coal is less graphitic than the material mined at Cranston near Providence, R. I. The coal is meta-anthracite and does not burn freely. However, improved equipment for burning coal has been developed, and if minable reserves of meta-anthracite should be found, methods of burning it probably could be devised.The purpose of this investigation was to determine sources of additional fuel. Since meta-anthracite mined at Portsmouth had been used with some success, an investigation was undertaken to determine the characteristics and continuity of the beds in this area."

Slow seismotectonic movements along the in-clined deep fault zone under the compressional horizontal stresses are supposed to be the prin-cipal mechanism controlling the structure and processes in the active ocean margins. Within the scope of the plane strain problem a simple 2-D geomechanical model for the evolution of an island arc system is investigated. We consider a homogeneous elastic half-plane with a shea-ring surface crack. The key element of the model is viscous interaction between the crack sides, the viscisity varying with depth. The model dif-fers from the classical steady-state mode of subduction by nonstationary creep processes on deep faults and by possibly cyclical development of the transition zone.A numerical modeling of the stress-strain state within the island arc system through time was carried out using a semianalytical approach. The results of simulation are in good agreement with geological, geophysical, and seismological data.

The Bureau of Mines developed computerized mathematical models to estimate the economic availability of Mesabi Range taconite concentrates; these are a quality model, a cost model, and an economic availability model. The quality model evaluates metallurgical test data; the cost model determines iron unit cost from mining and processing cost data; and the economic availability model determines quantity from geologic and ore quality data. By correlating all of the physical resource quality factors and dimensional characteristics with the economic cost factors associated with producing iron ore pellets, these three models combine to establish a final relation between iron ore reserve quantities and iron unit cost.

The essential differences expressed by the different speakers participating in this symposium concern merely the relative emphasis placed on the subjects that are commonly included under the term "geophysics" and the branches of science that form the basis for investigations in this field. In order to appreciate the present situation it may be profitable to briefly refer to a few historical matters. One can find almost countless descriptions of geological phenomena long antedating the introduction of the title of "geology," which has been credited to Richard de Bury in the fourteenth century. Interpretations, when they were offered, were generally pure speculation. Only toward the close of the eighteenth century do we find theories developed as the result of observations and tested by additional observations. It is difficult to select and give proper credit to the individual who was particularly responsible for turning geology into a distinctly observational science. william Smith, who has been called the "Father of English Geology," certainly represents the period when observation was the only method used. As he traveled through the British Isles, "sometimes 10,000 miles in a year," he was continually making notes of his observations. Geikie says: "His plain, solid, matter of fact intellect never branched into theory or speculation, but occupied itself wholly in the observation of facts." William Smith, with others of his time, definitely laid firmly the foundations on which modern geology has been built. Field and laboratory observations can no longer be said to constitute the sole basis for geologic contributions but we have not laid aside the methods of Smith and his followers. It is folly to underestimate the fundamental value of the observational part of geology in the present. The objection to purely observational geology is that it is mainly qualitative and not quantitative, general and not specific. No one can deny this charge and probably there are few who do not welcome every method or process whereby we can put aside generalities for definite established values. Physics is the science that has particularly come to the aid of the geologist in this respect. Contributions of PhYsics It is not the intent of the writer to enumerate or to evaluate all of the contributions to geologic advance in the field of. physics. A few only are used for the purpose of illustration, When Clarence King, Director of the United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, invited Ferdinand Zirkel to study 2500 thin sections of rocks collected from the western United States, the use of the microscope came into general use. Zirkel's report was published in 1876. He was not the first to use transmitted light for microscopic rock determination, some work having been done by Henry Clifton Sorby and others some years earlier, but he was the first to put into general use this method. In 1997, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District undertook the design of the Martinez East Side Trunk Sewer Improvements Project. Microtunneling was specified for approximately 1,035 meters (3,400 feet) of 600-mm (24-inch)diameter pipeline to be installed through estuarine soil deposits (San Francisco Bay Mud) and alluvium beneath the congested city streets of downtown Martinez, California. Directional drilling was specified for approximately 275 meters (900feet) of 200-mm (8-inch) diameter pipeline in four separate segments to be drilled through bedrock within narrow utility easements between residential properties. This paper presents a case history for the design and construction of themicrotunneling and directional drilling aspects of the project.

"Chrysotile asbestos can be dyed with certain dyestuffs to form stable coloured products whose hemolytic and cytotoxicity are greatly reduced. Examples of these dyes are Thiazol Yellow G (a monazo dye) and Trypan Blue (a diazo dye). Other dye stuffs, for example, basic dyes with triphenyl methane structure, Brilliant Yellow (a diazo dye), and Methylene Blue (a thiazine dye) colour asbestos but do not reduce its toxicity. Similarly alizarin, 8-hydroxyquinoline, and representative members of the phthalein group Bromocresol Purple and Phenolphthalein.IntroductionThere is, at present, a controversy regarding the dangers of asbestos fibres, and attempts are being made to render it less toxic. One of these attempts consisted of treating chrysotile asbestos with gaseous phosphorus oxychloride, POCI], at ambient temperature and in absence of moisture. The product had to be heated at 300°C to 500°C to expel exess entrained reagent to get a material containing 0.5070 to 5% phosphate groups and known as Chrysophosphate (Lalancette and Dunnigan, 1982). This product showed decreased toxicity as measured by its hemolytic effect on red blood cells (fable 1). In another approach, Flowers (1983) showed that when chrysotile asbestos was thoroughly mixed with a solution of ferric ammonium sulphate and the slurry was then filtered and dried, the product showed a marked decrease in cytotoxicity.In the present investigation the problem of toxicity was considered from a different point-of-view. Chrysotile asbestos is a hydrated magnesium silicate that can be represented by the structural model shown in Figure 1 from which it can be seen that magnesium hydroxide groups, Mg(OH)2, form a part of the silicate structure. Certain organic reagents that are known to react with magnesium ion in solution to form chelates were reacted with asbestos to find out whether a chelate was also formed on the fibres, and if so , what will be the hemolytic action and cytotoxicity of the product."

Mixtures of zirconium diboride and refractory metals of group VI were resistance sintered to high - density compacts using modified electric welding equipment . To evaluate the use of chromium , molybdenum , or tungsten as binders for zirconium diboride the sintered compacts were examined in polished sections and tested for crushing strength , hardness , microhardness , oxidation rate , and resistance to mechanical shock . Chromium yielded the highest compressive strength , the greatest resistance to mechanical shock and oxidation , and a satisfactory Rockwell hardness . Molybdenum did not yield a satisfactory cermet . Tungsten yielded compacts having high microhardness but very low mechanical strength .

The announcement of a minable reserve of 13.6 Mt (16 million tons) averaging 0.9 g/t (0.027 oz per ton) Au and 2.4 g/t (0.71 oz per ton) Ag for the open pit-heap leach reserve at Red Mountain No. 3 in Ouray County, Colorado, by Cornucopia Resources in November 1985 brings another open pit-heap leach precious metal ore body to the production stage. With about 8.2 Mt (9 million tons) of waste and metallurgical studies showing acceptable recovery rates, low reagent consumption, and good final percentage recovery, Red Mountain is a discovery that will add to the precious metal inventory of the US. Frank Baumgaruler of Denver, CO, recognized the precious metal potential in Red Mountain No. 3 and acquired all of the old claims. James Matlock conducted a field reconnaissance over Red Mountain No. 3 independently of the Baumgartner activities and recognized epithermal alteration and mineralization in the Tertiary volcanics. He recommended acquisition of the ground and was able to obtain rights and drill six core holes for Amoco in 1982. Amoco drilled a further nine core holes in 1983, but then dropped the property. Cyrano Resources examined the data and through its consulting geologist, V.F. Hollister, acquired the rights dropped by Amoco. In 1984 Cyrano began further drilling of the ore zone demonstrated by Amoco but they were then acquired by Cornucopia Resources. Cornucopia completed development of the property and commenced the permitting process in 1986. The property was recognized as a disseminated gold deposit by both Baumgartner and Matlock, and both deserve credit for properly evaluating mineralized outcrop in the Tertiary volcanics. However, Cornucopia recognized the profit potential in the heap leach exploitation of the ores and de- serves credit for completion of premine feasibility studies. The discovery is clearly a geological one, but the premine engineering studies were essential to the conversion of the prospect to a commercial mining enterprise. The deposit lies on the circular bounding fault of the Silverton caldera. Two reprints follow that help understand the geologic setting of the ore controls.

Samples collected during the exploration phase of mining represent baseline conditions at the site. As such, they can be very important in forecasting potential environmental impacts should mining proceed, and can become measurements against which future changes are compared. Constituents in stream water draining mined and mineralized areas tend to be geochemically, spatially, and temporally variable, which presents challenges in collecting both exploration and baseline water-quality samples. Because short-term (daily) variations can complicate long-term trends, it is important to consider recent findings concerning geochemical variability of stream-water constituents at short-term timescales in designing sampling plans. Also, adequate water-quality information is key to forecasting potential ecological impacts from mining. Therefore, it is useful to collect baseline water samples adequate for geochemical and toxicological modeling. This requires complete chemical analyses of dissolved constituents that include major and minor chemical elements as well as physicochemical properties (including pH, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen) and dissolved organic carbon. Applying chemical-equilibrium and appropriate toxicological models to water-quality information leads to an understanding of the speciation, transport, sequestration, bioavailability, and aquatic toxicity of potential contaminants. Insights gained from geochemical and toxicological modeling of water-quality data can be used to design appropriate mitigation and for economic planning for future mining activities.

The philosophy used in designing and writing Duval's Sierrita mine design programs is discussed. The Sierrita Incremental Design system (SID) is reviewed with emphasis on Pushback Extraction Design (PED). FED is a method by which predesigned pushbacks are sequenced into an optimized period-by-period design that can be directly utilized in daily operations as well as intermediate and long range planning. The advantage of SID is that it provides a practical, mineable open pit design. PED is not a theoretical design system; it is in operational use.

Minerographic and petrochemical research was carried out on crude ore samples from the complex polymetallic Zn-Cu-Pb sulfide ores of , Sotiel in Huelva province west of Seville, Spain. A computerized image analysis system was used to define the structural and textural characteristics of the ore to obtain information on the degree of liberation of the different minerals (i.e. pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite). Techniques of digital multispectral image processing of reflected light microscopy images were used. Particular structures were identified by means of mineral associations and numerically quantified to obtain useful information for designing beneficiation processes.

Figure 1-1 shows the basic transmitter design concepts used for the pulse system, the half-wave CW system, and the full-wave CW system. The antenna current waveform is also shown for each transmitter for typical operating frequencies and antennas. The switches shown in Figure 1-i were actually implemented using solid state devices. In all three systems the signaling format may be interrupted to conserve power and thereby extend battery life. Frequency accuracy and stability is achieved using a tuning fork oscillator in the transmitters and tuning fork filters in the receivers for all three systems. This provides the narrow reception bandwidths needed to enhance signal detectability. All three systems also use frequency assignment for identification purposes. The location schemes employed are likewise identical, each being based on detecting the null (signal minimum) of the horizontal magnetic field on the surface. Since these systems are basically similar, the primary purpose is to select the system which gives the maximum signal detectability on the surface from a manpack transmitter operating in the mine. Both the pulse and half-wave C W systems use a d. c. pulse to energize the loop antenna. However, with the pulse system, this pulse duration is short compared to the pulse repetition rate (prf), whereas with the half-wave C W system the pulse duration equals one-half the period of the switching frequency. In the pulse system, energy from the battery is stored in a capacitor so that during the switching interval the internal resistance of the power source can be considered almost negligible. Both transmitters must drive a loop antenna which is a reactive load having inductance, L, and resistance, Ra.

ENGINEERING educators have recently been discussing the advisability of extending the undergraduate curricula to five or six years, and a plan has also been proposed requiring a preliminary period of study in the liberal arts college before admission to the engineering college. Extension of the undergraduate curricula has been suggested as a means of more fully covering the subject matter in the major field of study. Interest in this proposed plan of requiring a preliminary period of study in the liberal arts college has been heightened through a bill recently introduced in the legislature of the State of New York. This plan intends to give a more professional status to engineering, and credit for these additional years of study would be allowed to those engineers applying for professional licensure. As a result of the interest in engineering curricula and due to the impetus given by these proposed plans a general reexamination of curricula has been conducted by a large number of schools with the stated purpose of determining if the present curricula are meeting the aims and scopes of engineering education.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of a general investigation of mines and mineral deposits in the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc field, attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to the Coker mines area by the presence of large tonnages of old mill tailings containing economically recoverable percentages of lead and zinc. Later, the results of extensive geologic studies of the area were presented to the Bureau of Mines by the Federal Geological Survey, directing attention to the possibility of extending the known ore limits of the area to the north and northeast of the old Coker No. 1 mine workings.With this end in view, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of churn drilling and sampling. This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine suitable construction materials for use in brine and steam environments produced from high-salinity geothermal brines. The high-temperature, high-salinity geothermal brines in the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resources Area (KGRA) are a valuable source of energy and mineral values. The brine and steam produced from them are corrosive and cause early failure of many common materials of construction. Mass-loss and electrochemical corrosion measurements were conducted on over 60 metal alloys in brine and steam environments produced from geothermal well Magmamax No.1, located at the Salton Sea KGRA, at temperatures from 1800 to 2150 C, and in synthetic Magmamax brine at 105° and 232° C. General corrosion, crevice and pitting corrosion, and stress corrosion were examined along with the effects of dissolved gases. The alloys with the most acceptable corrosion performance in high-temperature, high-salinity geothermal environments were the high-chromium ferritic stainless steels, the Inconels and Hastelloys, and the titanium alloys. Specific alloys that performed well in wellhead brine included Fe29Cr4Mo, E-Brite 26-1, stabilized Fe26Cr1Mo, 6X, Inconel 625, Hastelloy C-276, Hastelloy S, Hastelloy G, Ti5OA, TiO.2Pd, and TiCode 12.

The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments to measure the influence of environment on the friction and wear of a steel-quartz system at several speeds and loads. In each test a quartz block was pressed against a rotating ring of low-carbon steel. Environments used were moist air, dry air, dry nitrogen, water, aqueous oleylarnmonium acetate (ClsH35NH3+-OCOCH3), and aqueous aluminum chloride (A1C13). The sliding speeds were 2.2, 13, and 33, cm/sec, and the loads were 6.8 and 13.6 kg. The coefficient of friction, the wear, and the roughness of the surfaces were measured, and the wear debris was examined. The coefficient of friction was significantly lower in moist air at 2.2 cm/sec than for any other combination of environment and speed employed, and was generally an inverse function of the oxidizing ability of the environment. The coefficient of friction increased somewhat with increasing load. The wear of the steel rings was greatest in dry air at all speeds and loads. The wear of the quartz blocks at 180 rpm was greatest in dry air, but at 12 rpm it was greatest in nitrogen. Friction and wear in aqueous oleylarnmonium acetate and in aqueous aluminum chloride were similar to effect in water alone.
