The activity of nickel in liquid Pb-iVi alloys which are rich in lead was measured in the temperature region of 700° to 1100°C by means of the galvanic cell: The electrolyte used was stabilized zirconia. Tlze data were correlated using the a function, and a plot of the temperature coefficient aE/aT All subsequent calculations of the thermodynamic properties are based on these two functions. The activity, activity coefficient, and molar properties of mixing of nickel are reported. By definition: Since the chemical potential of nickel is related to the chemical potential of oxygen through the equilibrium constant for the formation of NiO from nickel and oxygen gas, the electromotive force of the cell is also expressed In this case, n is 2, E is the reversible potential of the cell, and 5 is Faraday's constant. The work of Kuikkola and wagnerl and Schmalz-reid2 has shown that the stabilized zirconia electrolyte is essentially an ionic conductor at the oxygen levels encountered in the experimental arrangement of the work, i .e., PG > 10-l7 atm. THE EXPERIMENTS The advantage of this type of reversible cell over those using a liquid electrolyte is the simplicity arising because the electrolyte also functions as one of the containing crucibles. A further simplification was the choice of the Ni (sat.)-NiO electrode as the standard. This permitted a ready check on the behavior of the electrolyte, as the potential of the cell must become zero when the right electrode becomes saturated with nickel, either because of a change of temperature or because of the addition of nickel to the electrode. It also permitted the potentials being measured to lie in the most satisfactory experimental range of 0 to 100 mv. Although it was not theoretically necessary, lead was included in the standard electrode as it assured good contact between the electrode and electrolyte. Cell Design. The general arrangement of the experimental cell assembly is shown in Fig. l(a) and the details of the cell itself are contained in Fig. l(b). The anode lead wire on the interior of the cell was connected to a coil of perforated sheet nickel. Within this coil were nickel oxide pellets which were held beneath the surface of the liquid Pb-Ni alloy. A disc of nickel oxide was held at the bottom of the external crucible (alumina) by means of the thermocouple protection tube. The nickel oxide disc and pellets were compressed dry at 10,000 psi and sintered at approximately 1000°C for an hour in air. Pilot plant studies showed the technical feasibility of fluidized-bed operation for producing hydrogen and synthesis gas by the steam-iron process. A mixture of iron and iron oxide from 20-to 100-mesh was partially reduced with a simulated producer gas and then oxidized with steam and/or carbon dioxide. Results of tests show the effects of pressure, temperature, bed height, gas-to-solids ratio, type of iron oxide, and composition of gas on the gas and solids conversions during reduction and oxidation. A baffled free-fall solids system was also found operable. The short residence time of about 5 seconds limited conversion of the solids.

The development, manufacture, and sale of small coal stokers suitable for domestic use has provided a new industry in the United States at a time when badly needed. Sales of domestic stokers have doubled each year for the past 4 rears, until in 1936 probably more than 90,000 such units were put into use. According to reports of the Bureau of the Census 79,543 residential stokers were sold in the first 10 months of 1937 by 109 manufacturers. This rapid expansion has made itself felt in the coal-mining industry. The smaller sizes of coal, either in a sized or slack condition, are in greater demand; as a result, preparation practices at the mines have had to be revised so that, in many instances, lump coal is being crushed to meet the demand for stoker coal. This situation in turn has necessarily resulted in a realignment of price schedules for the different sizes. One of the first underfeed stokers small enough for domestic use was developed at Seattle, Wash., in 1912; in 1916, a small overfeed stoker was developed at Seattle. These two types are generally considered to represent the beginning of the present domestic stoker industry in the United States. A careful inquiry as to the number of domestic stokers now installed in the Seattle area, made by C. R. Pate, who was detailed to this duty by the Works Progress Administration, indicated that probably 7,000 domestic stokers are being used in this area for residential heating. Most of these stokers axe of the overfeed type, although in the past 2 years the underfeed type has made rapid gains.

On April 10, 1958 a new 7500 long ton/day iron ore beneficiation plant went on stream producing an average of 3000 long-tons of high quality concentrate a day. Plant operates on two, 12-hour shifts is six days per week, The new mill end crust ink plant were built adjacent to the company's open pit dining operate on at Bomi Hills, Liberia. The mall is essentially a gravity concentrator employing crushing, and grinding to liberate the mineral values, followed by concentration in Humphreys spirals. The cleaner spiral tailings are re-ground and tabled to recover additional iron values. This paper on the out-and-fill method of mining is one of a series on mining methods published by the United States Bureau of Mines. It has been compiled chiefly from recent publications of the bureau describing in detail mining methods and costs at various mines. Other sources of information were the technical press, the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the Mines Haudbook, and company reports. References other than those mentioned in Table 1, which lists the mines entering into this discussion and gives general data regarding them, are given in the body of the paper. The authors wish to acknowledge the kind assistance of many operating officials, either through correspondence or in the course of numerous visits to their mines. DEFINITION OF CUT-AND-FILL STOPING The out-and-fill method of stoping is that method in which relatively small sections or slices are taken successively from the lower surface of a block of ground by open-stoping methods, the broken ore being removed and each section filled with waste material before the next is mined. This definition excludes shrinkage stoping, even with subsequent filling; it excludes square-set and fill methods; it excludes the Mitchell slice method, which may be classed as underhand square-setting; it excludes the systematic use of stull sets and filling, which is a variation of square-setting; it excludes any method involving the caving of the ore, walls, or overburden during the process of extraction, although caving may be allowed to take place when the waste fill is withdrawn for use in other stopes; and it excludes any open-stope method without filling. Through variations, which will be discussed later, the cut-and-fill method merges into shrinkage stoping, open stoping, or square-setting. The use of casual timber support, such as props, stulls, or timber cribs for holding up weak portions of the back does not constitute a change from cut-and-fill to square-set mining.

Stone that may be applied to purposes of construction is available in nearly all the inhabited parts of Canada, the most important exception being the prairie region, but, even here, the deficiency is overcome in many parts by a wealth of glacial field-stones. In many parts of the country, also, the accessible stone is of a quality so poor that brick is more generally used. There is a great difference, however, between stone that 'may be used' and stone suitable for buildings of a monumental type or even for 'trimmings' on the better class of dwelling in the cities and towns. It is in the latter sense that the expression 'building stone' is commonly used. Thus restricted the term includes varieties of sandstone, limestone, and granite, using the latter word in the custom of the quarryman, not only for the true granite of the geologist but for many other igneous rocks as well. Building stone of high quality grades imperceptibly into stone suitable for monuments, particularly in the case of the granites. The present review will deal with building and monumental stone in this restricted sense and will omit marble, although that material has been used to some extent for building. For instance, the Great West block in Winnipeg is built of marble from British Columbia.

This paper is a progress report on the study of mining methods and costs in the western United States and summarizes that part of the work pertaining to the undercut block-caving method of mining. Ore is mined on a large scale exclusively by the undercut block-caving method at the following six mines in the western United States: The Morenci branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, Morenci, Ariz.; the Ray mines of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. at Ray, Ariz.; the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. at Inspiration, Ariz.; the Miamo Copper Co. at Miami, Ariz.; the Ruth mine of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. at Ruth, Nev.; and the Consolidated Coppermines Corporation at Kimberly, Nev. The undercut block-caving method is also used at the mine of the Andes Copper Mining Co. at Potrerillos, Chile.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 16,927-acre Pryor Mountain Wilderness Study Area (MT-067-206), part of the 3,955-acre Burnt Timber Canyon Wilderness Study Area (MT-067-205), and part of the 4,550-acre Big Horn Tack-On Wilderness Study Area (MT-067-207) to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The Burnt Timber and Big Horn Tack-On study areas contain 3,430 and 2,550 acres, respectively. The three areas are in Carbon County, MT, and Big Horn County, WY, about 13 miles north of Lovell, WY. No identified resources exist in any of the study areas. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed literature, searched county mining records and examined prospects, claims, and mineralized areas to determine whether identified mineral resources existed. The three study areas are within the Pryor Mountain unorganized mining district. U.S. Department of Energy production records indicate there were 223,000 pounds of uranium oxide (U308) and 236,000 pounds of vanadium pentoxide (V205) produced from 19 properties within the mining district. The average ore grade was 0.36 percent [3,600 ppm (parts per million)] U308 and 0.416 percent (4,160 ppm) V20S. Only the Pryor Mountain study area has current claims, the 50 claims of the S0S group.

Among the more important raw materials now utilized for the commercial production of synthetic organic chemicals is natural 'gas. Natural gas has been used as a fuel and source of energy almost from its discovery, but its potentialities as a chemical raw material were not realized until recently. Research in the use of natural gas for Chemical synthesis received great impetus from the discovery by Brooks and Humphrey4/ in 1918 of alcohols in the diluted ?acid oil? obtained by sulfuric acid treatment of cracked petroleum distillates. Experimental data soon showed that hydrocarbons from natural gas could be converted to these same products. Laboratory methods for chlorination of natural-gas hydrocarbons, particularly of methane for the production of methyl chloride, methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, and chleroform were known before that time but were not developed commercially. Methods for obtaining alcohol by oxidation of hydrocarbons derived from natural gas also were known before 1918 but had not received commercial consideration. Since 1918, and particularly during the past 15 years, the work of chemists and chemical manufacturers throughout the world has resulted in an accumulation of data regarding the reactivity of natural-gas hydrocarbons, and related hydrocarbons found in refinery gases or made synthetically. These data have been used to develop methods for converting hydrocarbons into chemical products and thus form the basis for a large and growing industry.

In 1960, the Kennecott Copper Corp. and the U.S. Bureau of Mines entered into a joint research program to determine the changes in stress, strain, and displacement created by changes in slope angles. The field site was the Kimbley Pit, located near Ely, Nevada; the supporting laboratory investigations were made at the Bureau's Denver Mining Research Center. Following a study to determine the rock stresses in the mining district, the strike and dip of geologic defects (fractures) in the rock, and the laboratory-determined strength of the rock, a new slope angle and pit configuration was selected, and instruments were installed to measure changes in stress, strain, displacement, microseismic noise rate, and sonic velocities at several points in the west wall of the pit. Between February and November 1966, the west slope was changed from an average angle of 45° to a new slope angle that started at 45° on the south wall, gradually increased to 57 ½ at the center of the west wall, and to 61° on the north wall. The pit was deepened from about 500 feet to about 550 feet. About 2.55 million tons of waste and ore were removed by stripping and mining.

This report describes the feasibility of mining the oil-shale deposits of the Piceance Creek basin in Colorado by an integrated open pit system. The study is based upon a comprehensive analysis of pertinent environmental, economic, and engineering factors. Ten mining cases are investigated, and the mine design and cost estimates for each case are presented in this report. Nine of the cases represent three cutoff grades, defining oil shale ore as equal to and above 15 gallons per ton (gpt), 20 gpt, and 25 gpt, at three ore production levels of 500,000 tons per day (TPD), 1,250,000 TPD, and 2,500,000 TPD. The tenth case is an alternate design of the 500,000 TPD production rate at the above 15 gpt cutoff grade. The report consists of Volume I, a technical and cost comparison of the ten cases; Volume II-Part I, a detailed explanation of the estimating methods used; and Volume II-Part 2, a more detailed discussion of the technical and cost features of the ten cases than is presented in Volume I.

The tungsten potentialities of the Combination mine were examined by a mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines in 1947. A report based upon his personal knowledge of the mine and the results of the examination contained recommendations for further investigation. This report presents factual data from Bureau of Mines field investigations begun in August 1947 and continued until December 1948, except for a 5-month recess during the first winter. The Combinat.ion mining property of 52 patented claims and 15 patented mill sites is in the Black Pine mining district, Granite County, Mont., 11 miles northwest of Philipsburg. The altitude in the mine vicinity is approximately 6,500 feet.

Perhaps the only thing certain about an address that purports to look into the future of any human endeavour is that time will prove it :.o be inaccurate. In undertaking the dubious, but oft-times necessary business of prediction, thr, historian will base his/her forecasts on tr-ands of the past, the speculator on current events, and the politician on what he/she would dearly like to see happen. The thoughts expressed in this address seem to have arisen through exercising a combination of all three of those philosophies but, hopefully, with a smat- tering of pragmatism.

Present-day interest in the rare-earth elements and their compounds, for both metallurgical and ceramic uses, makes it highly desirable to accumulate basic thermodynamic data that can be applied to theoretical considerations of the processing of these substances. Such data still are seriously lacking. This Bureau of Mines paper reports the results of high-temperature heat content measurements of the sesquioxides of four rare-earth elements--europium, gadolinium, neodymium, and samarium--and of the closely related element, yttrium. The temperature ranges covered by the measurements are as follows: Monoclinic Eu2O3, 298°-1,802° K. Cubic Eu203, 298°-1,350° K. Monoclinic Gd203, 298-1,802° K. Cubic Gd203, 298°-1,550° K. [The theory of fractional "eduction" of oil from oil shale has been used by several inventors as the basis for the design of retorts for the production of oil f roan the oil shales of the United States. The term fractional "eduction" gives expression to the rather common belief that when an oil shale is he-test et produces light, low-boiling oils at to temperatures, and increasingly heavier, higher-boiling oils as the temperature of retorting rites. The theory evidently had its is origin in the fact that crude petroleum may be fractionally distilled, yielding light oils at low distillation temperatures, and heavier oils as the distillation temperature increases. Thus, gasoline is produced from petroleum at relatively log: temperatures, kerosene at a higher temperature, and heavier products such as gas-oil and lubricating distillates at still higher temepratures, The writers have examined several oil-shale retorts designed to take advantage of the belief that crude, and en some cases refined, gasoline can be recovered from the shale at low temperatures; kerosene at higher temperatures, and so on. Such retorts are usually designed to operate continuously, and. have several vapor-pipes lending from them at differing intervals and passing to separate condensers. Designers of such retorts expect that the distillate from the low-temperature parts of the retort will be gasoline, and that as the shale basses to zones of increasingly higher temperatures, the vapor lines leading from these zones will remove increasingly heavier products such as kerosene, gas-oil, etc.]

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investi-gation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the sixteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of the latter holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

The report provides guidance for determining those environmental impacts associated with the surface mining of steeply pitching coal seams. In addition to the environmental impacts, four additional issues are addressed, namely (1) Time and motion studies of those coal mining systems employed in mining seams which pitch in excess of 25°, (2) Assessment of those mining techniques, (3) Development of rationale for the mining methods employed, (4) Identification of the reclamation practices and determine whether these practices were in compliance with appropriate Federal and State regulations. Five surface mines located in three geologically distinct basins of the United States were analyzed during the period of August through November 1979. The three basins include the Hanna Basin of Wyoming, the North Park Basin of Colorado and the Southern Anthracite Field of Pennsylvania.

Open pit mine enterprises are complex systems that depend on multiple parameters such as mineral grade distribution, geotechnical characteristics, economic conditions and engineering requirements, all of which vary in time and space with a different degree of uncertainty. The unpredictable nature of these inputs imposes a risk to mine owners and shareholders which in the worst case can lead to highly undesirable financial outcomes.Desktop studies commonly examine a set of scenarios based on adjusting variables such as commodity prices, mining costs, processing costs, and metal recoveries to understand their relative impact on the economics of a project. It is less common to systematically explore and simulate hundreds of alternative physical designs to understand and compare the financial risk associated with one or more mining projects.This paper presents a risk assessment tool set and methodology that uses web based cloud computing to enable multiple simulations of mine designs to be rapidly and efficiently executed. The methodology includes generating random sets of prices and costs values within their respective probability distributions. Pit designs are then created to maximise the profit for each set of input variables. Various approaches to analysing the results are discussed. Use of the same high performance computing environment for understanding the financial risk associated with the variability of the underlying geological resource model is also discussed, with provided examples using case studies from two of the major mineral producers.CITATION:Lima, E, Gregory, D, Lapworth, A and Faria, C, 2014.
