PART I INTRODUCTION Among the zinc base alloys used for casting in metal moulds, particularly die casting, those alloys containing aluminum usually together with copper, are probably the most widely used. The reason lies in their desirable mechanical properties and the fluidity and absence of hot shortness which facilitate casting. Objection to the use of these alloys may bee raised on account of the rather frequent instances of failure of a type variously described as disintegration, exfoliation and intercrystalline corrosion. In all cases which have come to our knowledge where the conditions of service were known, failure has occurred upon exposure to moisture and heat varying from a hot moist atmosphere to high pressure steam. Moreover, the alloys described in all such cases contain impurities or alloying metals which the present authors have found to have enormous accelerating effects on intercrystalline oxidation in zinc-aluminum alloys. Thus Williams1 experimented with an alloy containing a large percentage of tin exposed in Cuba. Bauer2 reports failure of a boiler plug containing over 1 per cent. of impurities, doubtless lead for the most part, and Rawdon's3 examinations were made on an alloy containing 0.4 per cent. lead also exposed to the Tropics. No thorough investigation of the nature and cause of this type of failure has been made heretofore, so far as the authors are aware, although Rawdon correctly classified it as internal oxidation. We have, therefore, carried out this investigation in order to determine the exact nature of this phenomenon and the effect of other metals present as impurities or intentional additions in accelerating or-retarding it. In the appendix we include a considerable amount of data which may be valuable in selecting an alloy combining good physical properties with high resistance to oxidation.

A generalized void diffusion model for subsidence prediction has been developed based on theoretical concepts and physical principles. The general form of the model is a three-dimensional differential equation. With a few assumptions on the characteristics of overburden strata overlying typical room-and-pillar mining or longwall mining systems, specific solutions for the differential equation were obtained. A brief description of these solutions and their applications in the United States and China are presented in this paper.

"INTRODUCTION The Iron Mountain deposits were examined in the summer of 1943 by engineers of the Bureau of Lanes, and a diamond-drilling project was set up under the Strategic Minerals Program. Actual drilling operations, under the supervision of a Bureau engineer, commenced November 9, 1943, and were completed on November 1, 1944. When the Bureau began detailed exploration of the Iron Mountain deposits, the Federal Geological Survey participated. Dr. I. W. Newhouse, of the Survey, and Dr. A. F. Hagner, of the Wyoming Geological Survey, were assigned to the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Since 2008 rapid advances have been made in technologies for the sensing and sorting of ores, particularly copper, and copper-related ores. Advances include significant increases in the sensitivity and throughput, specifically in the area of bulk sorting. Such advances were not possible without contemporaneous advances in the understanding of copper orebodies, in particular the understanding and quantification of the heterogeneity required within an orebody to support an effective sort, regardless of the technology deployed to do this. This paper covers fundamental knowledge in the characterization of orebodies and their ores for sorting; relationships between measures of heterogeneity and sorting response; the design of bulk sorting systems that can exploit this heterogeneity to add value to copper operations; and, a quantification of the value that can be generated from bulk sorting at a case study mine. INTRODUCTION Society currently puts increasing pressure on industries to move towards cleaner and more efficient means of production, and the mining industry is no exception. Mining additionally faces other factors increasing the pressure to be more efficient: high-grade and easily accessible reserves have become largely depleted, therefore the mined grade at operations across most commodities, including and in particular copper, is decreasing. Additionally, the grade of new discoveries in the sector continues to decrease (Schodde, 2011). Factor in the high capital cost of processing facilities and the low levels of efficiency of current grinding circuits, and the situation for such mines becomes dire. Sorting, by maximizing the amount of ore extracted while simultaneously reducing the waste content in ore delivered to downstream processes (whether simply transport and crushing, or more sophisticated circuits such as grinding and flotation or leaching) has long been of interest to mining operations and projects struggling with low margins (Bamber, 2012). However, until recently sorting technologies that are both cost effective and effective at such high throughputs have not been commercially available.

A process for regenerating spent pickle liquor is proposed in which some of the water is evaporated at atmospheric pressure and ferrous sulfate is precipitated as monohydrate crystals..Equilibrium conditions are set for a slurry of crystals in a mother liquor containing 5 percent FeS04 and 45 percent E2S04, by weight, and boiling at about 235° F. The slurry is pumped continuously to a filter, and the mother liquor from the filter is pumped back for reuse in the pickling tanks. The net result of the process is to remove ferrous sulfate in the regeneration plant at the same rate ac it is produced in the pickling tanks. This process is integrated with the steel-pickling operation and controlled by the pickling requirements for particular steels. Spent pickle liquor is removed for regeneration continuously from both batch and continuous picklers at higher acid concentrations than would be dumped to waste because no acid is neutralized or discarded. However, the process is not designed to keep a sulfuric acid concentration stronger than 25 percent in any pickling tank. To retain flexibility in the pickling operation, all acid makeup is added to the pickling tanks. Rinse waters are used as water makeup for the pickling tanks. To further minimize waste of acid in the rinse waters, improvements of rinsing practices are outlined.

Due to the immense volumes of municipal wastes that are generated in this nation every year, it has become imperative that effective measures be developed to utilize all or portions of these materials in a productive and efficient manner. Nany larger municipalities employ incineration to reduce the bulk of material to be removed to disposal sites: but, even after incineration, approximately one-fourth of the original waste material in the form of non-combustible residue and flyash remain. It has been found that the flyash fraction of the incinerator residue contains varying amounts of copper, silver, gold, aluminum, iron and titanium along with many other important metals. The serious loss of these natural resources contained within the flyash and the monetary expense of current disposal methods present a serious and rapidly increasing problem to the public and to the Federal Government. The growing emphasis upon environmental control, rapidly increasing urban population and "convenience packaging" 'with its attendant increased waste production has led to the initiation of a broad range of studies concerning municipal waste. For example, the U. S. Bureau of I-lines is investigating all aspects of the incineration of municipal waste under its solid waste disposal program.l "In-house" studies range from improved incinerator design to potential recovery and recycling of the various components within the incinerator residue. A major portion of the latter research is being performed at the U. S. Bureau of ;-lines, College Park, Maryland facility while grants for specific areas of study have been issued to several universities and research institutes. In addition, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has supported programs examining the potential recovery of paper; glass, metals and other components of unincinerated refuse followed by disposal in sanitary landfills.

Conventional mine safety wisdom states that "the most efficient mines are also the safest." Since the 1980s, small mines (and contractors) have been targeted as the most dangerous ones because of their fatality records. Statistical testing of 1993 West Virginia safety and production data indicated that the most efficient WV mines were not the safest ones, considering correlations between the severity measure and tons per employee-hour, except for very small mines. This paper will present the results of an extended analysis of WV mine safety using 1993 and 1996 data, concluding with the method used to suggest current priorities for focusing interventions.

A near geophysical surface investigation of a landfill area close to the Hania city, in Crete Island, Greece, was conducted as inextricable phase of a preliminary geotechnical, geological and hydrogeological study of the area under investigation. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), one of the most promising prospecting techniques mainly concerning its effective contribution to resolve several environmental problems, was applied for the geophysical modelling. ERT is a robust imaging method the theory and implementation of which are well documented in geophysical research literature. The survey site is located in Akrotirion Peninsula, about 7km east of Hania city in Crete I. The geological setting comprises Trypalion limestones, marly limestones and a clayed weathered layer. Cavities are also identified at various scales which are recent tectono-karstic voids resulted from the combined actions of karstic erosion and tectonic stress on the Trypalion limestones where they are located. Due to the above-mentioned geological singularity and in the light of the requirement for an environmentally safe construction of the landfill, an ERT survey was carried out by deploying the dipole?dipole electrode configuration. Specifically, seven geoelectrical tomographies were conducted reaching the prospecting depth of 36m. The resulted images conduced, a) to overcome geotechnical problems, b) to plan the future sites for waste disposal and c) to reliably estimate the thickness of the already deposited wastes.

Of the gold mined in Canada over 90 percent is extracted from the ore by the process of "cyanidation". In this process crushed ore is treated with lime to provide "protective alkalinity" and cyanide, usually in the form of sodium cyanide. The gold is dissolved in the cyanide solution, which after further treatments for clarification, is precipitated by the addition of zinc dust. Wastes from the process consist of tailings which will contain cyanides. Water consumption, mill size, effluent quantity and quality are depicted in transparency (1). It should be noted that as far as the wastes are concerned it has been impossible to postulate a typical situation. Variation from the above data will occur. A summary of data from tailings pond effluents is presented in transparency (2). The figures in parentheses indicate the usual range of values for the parameter.

The discussion by Tammann and Botschwar of the transition from eutectie grouth to denrdritic plus eu-tectic growth is reviewed and applied to metallic eutectic systems. Using expevimental data on the geowth rate of the Pb-Sn eutectic, and an extrapolalion of dendritic growth rate in tin and Sn-Pb alloys , qlcantitatice prerlictiotls of the extent of the eutectic region in tin-vich Sn-Pb alloys are made. There are no experimenta1 measuvements available for detailed comparison with these predictions. EUTECTIC structures form over a small range of compositions. The theory of lamellar growth presented by Jackson and Hunt' indicates that it is in principle possible to have eutectic growth over almost the complete range of compositions between the two solidus lines. This does not occur in practice. Alloys far from the eutectic composition grow dendritically followed by a eutectic as shown in Fig. I. The transition from a eutectic to a dendritic plus eutectic interface cannot be predicted from constitutional undercooling arguments because constitutional undercooling always exists ahead of the eutectic interface.' Reasonable predictions can, however, be made using arguments originally put forward by Tammanl. and Botschwar.3 These and later workers'"*6 carried out extensive experimental investigations of the extent of the eutectic range in organic materials. They concluded that the structure formed, eutectic or dendrites plus eutectic, depended on which structure grew faster at the given undercooling. This is, of course, equivalent to the structure which grows with the smallest undercooling at a given growth rate. In this paper, we will discuss these ideas briefly and then apply them to predict quantitatively the range of eutectic growth in tin-rich Pb-Sn alloys. The temperature dependence of the growth rates of dendrites and eutectic for a typical metal alloy of eutectic composition is shown schematically in Fig. 2(a). The growth rate for the eutectic increases more rapidly with undercooling than those of the dendrites because of the short diffusion path maintained in the eutectic, see Fig. 1. For an alloy off the eutectic composition on the A-rich side, the growth rates shift as shown in Fig. 2(b). The liquidus temperature of the a phase increases, that of the 3 phase decreases, and the temperature of zero growth rate for the eutectic does not change. The curves, particularly the dendritic ones, change shape as well, but for our purposes the principal effects occur because of the change in liquidus temperatures.3-6 In an isothermal system, only a dendrites will grow above TE, Fig. 2(b). This report covers the final phase of a project demonstrating the economic efficiency of cross-ridge mountaintop coal mining. A demonstration mine was established at Big Wheel Gap in northeastern Tennessee. Not only was cross-ridge mining feasible for the selected site, but parallel cut methods could not be used due to a deficit in available spoil storage. Cross-ridge mining permitted coal extraction at a cost almost identical with costs simulated by computer projections using mathematical optimization techniques. No unexpected environmental problems were encountered. Volume I is accompanied by Volume II which describes the MATHMINE Mine Simulation System, software used to support the mining demonstration.

The use and application of shotcrete for ground support in the Asia Pacific Region is as diverse as the countries that make up this region. This paper will attempt to describe the many methods used on selected projects within that region. The project description(s) will include project logistics, equipment, mix design, products and application methods utilized along with specifications and performance results (where available). The author will attempt to reach a conclusive opinion on the success, or nonsuccess, of the various shotcrete methods employed and the development of shotcrete within the Asia Pacific Region.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines awarded a contract to Morrison-Knudsen, Inc., to evaluate the use of roadheaders in underground mining operations. Road-headers were found to be widely used in mines as construction support units, as development miners, and as stoping machines. However, road-headers were found to have mechanical and electrical problems, to suffer reduced productivity when integrated into the mining cycle, and to create dust problems. Also high capital costs and low utilization and avail-ability cause high amortization costs per ton. This report identifies the roadheader operating problems and offers suggestions for improved mechanical and electrical design as well as manufacturer and owner responsibilities for improved availability. The development of a complex integrated excavation and ground support sys tern is no t warranted until the roadheader itself is made much more reliable.

A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as de- rived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems. Plans in the second area of interest--that of relating communications to mining operations-- were to observe mining operations and usage of communications; to gain insight through interviews with mine management, from mine superintendents to section foreman; and to look for correlation between communications, production, and safety. Lastly the communication systems needs and requirements were determined from first hand interviews of mine personnel, from the analysis that lead to the individual reports on the eight mines, and from an overview of all of the mines studied. The latter was done to find commonality between the needs of the individual mines such that system requirements having the greatest universal value could be derived, thus lowering per-mine cost of equipment through economics of scale. Armed with tape recorders, backgrounds in communications technology, and with an interview questionnaire that was improved as experience was gained, engineers visited the eight mines to obtain the raw data from which the needs and requirements could be developed through analysis. During the first part of the program two days were spent at each mine so that interviews and tours could be completed, and so that full eight hour shift phone usage recordings could be obtained for statistical analysis. One day visits were sufficient for those trips where tape recordings were not made. During the later trips less attention was given to the statistical nature of communications, and more to how communications relates to the total mining operation.

The United Status Bureau of Mines has recently collected samples of crude petroleum from well] in the newly developed Joiner, Kilgore, and Longview fields of Rusk and Gregg Counties in the East Texas district, and from the Van field of the East Central district of Texas. East Texas Cruder The four samples of crude oil from the East Texas fields are all typical "intermediate base" crudes according to the classification given by Smith and Lane. 3 Sample 31,063 is from the discovery well in the Joiner field. This well came in on October 3, 1930, with an initial production of 400 barrels per day. Sample 31,062 was obtained from a well that was completed on February 1, 1931, with an initial production of 3,500 barrels per day. The 32 East Texas crudes are produced at an average depth of approximately 3,600 feet. which is the deepest Woodgine-sand production so far encountered in any of the Texas or Louisiana fields.

During the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected several lots of ore' from properties in the vicinity of Winkelman, Ariz. As none of the ores would be marketable directly, an investigation was made to determine their amenability to concentration by ore dressing. The Geronimo group of claims is in Pinal County, 8 miles west of Winkelman, Ariz. The manganese oxides occur as cementing material in ore zones of conglomerate. Representative samples of a 2-ton lot of ore cut from outcrops of two lenticular deposits were laboratory-tested. Two 1-ton samples from the Benningfield property were similar in physical characteristics but differed in grade. This claim is 11-1/2 miles south of Winkelman and about 1 mile west of the San Pedro River on the south side of Putman, Wash. The manganese minerals occurred as nodules and lenses, replacing limestone, in a capping over a dark, igneous dike. The North Star group consists of five claims on the west side of the San Pedro River 14 miles south of Winkelman. The ore consists of a low-grade, manganese oxide-calcite occurrence interspersed with stringers of higher-grade material and is present as filling in a fissure zone in porphyry. Two samples were obtained by the examining engineer; one sample represented run-of-mine material, the other represented ore from the vein that could be hand-sorted or selectively mined.

A common problem during the operation of the Kaldo furnace is the formation of accretions and blockage of the injection lance due to splashing. This typically occurs during the processing of anodic slimes for the production of doré. In this work, a 1:7 scale model of the Kaldo furnace currently in operation at Metalúrgica de Cobre, Mexico, was built in transparent acrylic plastic. Water and colored oil were used to represent the doré and slag, respectively. The model was used to determine the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance under a variety of experimental conditions at room temperature. Input variables included two types of oil, rotation speed, inclination angle, and the fraction of the vessel volume occupied by the liquids (φ). A mathematical correlation for the dimensionless maximum penetration distance of the injection lance d ∗ as a function of φ, the Froude number of the liquids in the vessel (Fr), the Reynolds number of the gas jet (Re), and the oil-to-water kinematic viscosity ratio (η)was developed. Reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental values was obtained. Digital images showed that splashing was caused by the turbulent gas jet impinging upon the free surface of the liquids, whereas the cascade effect was negligible. The results of this work have been useful to improve the operation of an industrial Kaldo reactor.

This manual was prepared to provide essential information to be used when critical decisions pertaining to mine fire recovery or other disaster situations become necessary. It is a state of the art report based upon technology and instruments developed, under a Bureau of Mines Research Contract. A detailed description of the development work and results of full-scale field testing is contained in the Technical Report, Vol. II, of USBM Contract Report H0122045, "Extinguishing Coal Mine Fires by Remote Scaling." Further research and development work has been programmed; consequently, a more complete manual providing detailed instructions and describing available instruments and equipment will be published. Those instruments and special equipment described in this manual must be considered prototype; methodology and applied technology will require special expertise. Consequently, any prospective application of this remote sealing technique will require assistance by the United States Bureau of Mines Research organization and experts from the contractor who developed the basic technology and instruments.
