The distribution coefficients of Ag, As, Au, Bi, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Te, and Zn between copper matte and slag from the reverb furnace No.2 at the Copper Smelter and Refinery, RTB BOR (Yugoslavia), are presented in this paper. The influence of the matte grade on the minor elements distribution coefficients between copper matte and slag is analyzed. The minor elements distribution in the slag phase along the slag melt depth and the furnace length is also determined.

A refined ad improved self-sealing brattice for use in coal mine rescue and recovery operations for directing the flow of air has been developed and tested by Goodyear Aerospace Corporation for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The brattice is made from a lightweight, low cost material that meets MSHA flammability requirements. The units can be erected using pins, spade or lightweight extensible poles. Tests here conducted to determine leakage rate from minimal to a maximum of 1.5" H20. The ability to handle reverse flows was demonstrated and a non-flammable foam was used as an auxiliary sealing agent.

The selection of an underground mining method stems from a multivariate analysis that considers geomechanical, geological, economic, and operational parameters. Even after identifying the most compatible method, there is no assurance that the mining company will achieve the best performance. The geological complexity of some deposits requires adaptations of methods described in the literature to obtain more selectivity and reduce mining waste. There are some studies on geometry of underground structures, but a methodology that describes an adaptation of a room-and-pillar mining method for ore bodies with down-dip varying from 20° to 25° is novel. The present work aimed to reduce dilution by adapting the traditional room-and-pillar mining method (TRP) to inclined ore boLittle attention has been paid to the rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa after their lifespan. This paper aims to explore management gaps in legislation that have resulted in the non-rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa. There is growing evidence that supports the distressing effects of mining on people living around these mines in the North West Province. This paper was motivated by the current socio-economic status quo of old mining towns, the influx of illegal miners (Zama Zamas), severe environmental damages, and the violence associated with derelict mines. Underpinning this research was an ecosystem approach and integrated resources management principles, which formed the foundation for the decision-making process.The researcher used a mixed-method approach and employed convergent techniques. A semi-structured instrument was used to collect data from 200 respondents. The results indicated that there is a dire need for community-based consultative processes, and an absence of clear guidelines for derelict and ownerless mines to pressure mine management to adhere to rehabilitation standards. Moreover, the mining charter is ambiguous regarding policy implementation, budgetary allocation, and duration of the rehabilitation of these mines. The paper concluded that management challenges associated with derelict mines can be reduced if all stakeholders follow the guidelines as outlined in the environmental legislative framework (NEMA) of South Africa while being open to innovations in line with international best practices. It also contributes towards the development of guidelines for the management and implementation of legislation related to derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa from a philosophical, theoretical, and policy perspectivedies. This new method is entitled short-hole room-and-pillar (SHRP). The equations that measure the dilution are defined according to the geometry of stopes and openings. The results comprise comparative analyses of the operational and planned dilutions to measure the performance of the SHRP method. The average operating dilution of the SHRP method was more than five times lower than the planned dilution according to the TRP method. Low operational dilution indicates high selectivity of the method and its potential to reduce underground mining tailings.

An investigation is made of the feasibility of developing compact transmit antennas and/or other means to efficiently couple VLF to MF band radio energy between portable wireless communication units in coal minus. The completely wireless communication ranges between two portable radios equipped with practically-sized reference loop antennas in representative coal mine environments are estimated. Antenna technology is assessed with respect to transmit moment, range, intrinsic safety, battery and wearability requirements to determine the most suitable antenna types for use by miners. It is concluded that air-core bandolier loop antennas, and perhaps ferrite-loaded loop antennas, having peak transmit moments of about 2.5 ampere-m2 will be the most effective antenna choices for portable units. This choice, however, will not allow the range goal of 1350 feet to he attained in mines having unfavorable signal attenuation and noise environments. Rectangular air-core loops are compared with grounded horizontal-wire and vertical-wire mode exciters for fixed station applications. The potential for significantly increasing the wireless communication range by inductively coupling to communications and power lines in a mine is evaluated and found to be considerable based on theoretical coupling equations. Lastly, the theoretical performance of a hybrid noise cancelling diversity receiving technique that utilizes both the electric and magnetic field components of the ambient noise to improve the receiver output signal-to-noise ratio under certain adverse conditions is estimated and shown to be favorable when the magnetic and electric field noise components are highly correlated.

A literature search and survey were prepared on the technology of surface hydraulic mining, with particular reference to its possible use in the United States forstripping overburden from surface coal mines. Extensive use was made of Russian references which were translated into English. The advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic mining and hydrotransport are identified as well as criteria for selecting potential applications. At present, the major U.S. application is in the phosphate industry of Florida and North Carolina. Potential locations for hydraulic stripping of overburden from coal seams are identified in the states of Alaska, Illinois, Montana, Washington and Wyoming. Other potential applications include the hydraulic mining of peat in Minnesota, and the stripping of overburden from lignite in Texas, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. Further research is recommended, particularly on the subject of dewatering of fine clay slimes to avoid water pollution and to permit rapid reclamation of mined areas.

For years many oil producers have believed that often low-pressure oil- and gas-bearing strata have been over coked in fields where the rotary system of drilling has been used. Collom3/ gave as a reason for this condition that because the mud fluid was thick, the oil or gas stratum was plastered and sealed as the tools passed through it and no oil showed at the surface. Although this observation was made 15 years ago, it may often still be true notwithstanding modern developments in coring and electrical logging. Operators have believed, also, that mud fluid does not solidify behind the casing. Lewis and McMurray4/ stated: "All the evidence obtainable from practical experience points to the fact that the mud fluid properly mixed and employed does not solidify behind the casing, even in deer wells and after long periods."

During fiscal year 1969, the Bureau of Mines was engaged in 66 projects to improve methods for producing and utilizing petroleum. Programs directed toward the continued conservation of this natural resource, including crude oil, natural gas, and oil shale, were carried out through research performed at four laboratories supervised and supported by administrative personnel of this Bureau of the Department of the Interior. Over 100 technical papers and reports were published by the Bureau or others based on this research, and numerous other reports were prepared for U.S. Government agencies, State agencies, and organizations of the petroleum and natural gas industry engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau.

The Furnish mine, Caharrus County, W. C., was operated intermittently until 1905 as a gold mine. Scheelite was discovered by A. L. Mash in the mine dumps of the Furniss and Phoenix mines, and he later informed the Bureau of Mines of his discovery. The Bureau of Mines, in two projects at the deposit in 1948 and in drilled 12 holes totaling 1,706.6 feet, examined and sampled the underground workings, excavated by bulldozer and hand, 3,155 linear feet of trenches and collected numerous samples for assay. The best scheelite shown; was found in the underground exposure of the Furniss mine.

Ever since British Columbia started the ball rolling in 1974 with the introduction of its now-defunct Mineral Royalties Act, all Canada's resource-based provinces have significantly altered their mining tax systems. The last resource-based province to abandon its pre -1974 mining tax structure is New Brunswick, which introduced a new mining tax regime in the summer of 1977 to take effect from April 1 1977. The new structure, which represents the outcome of considerable study and discussions with industry representatives, contains some intriguing concepts which make Nero Brunswick's new mining tax system unique among the Canadian provinces.

By monitoring the capacitance of abrupt p-n junctions it is possible to follow the motion of substitu-tional impurities. A p-n junction is formed by growth of silicon from an Al-Si alloy on an n-type silicon sutstrate at a temperature in the range 650" to 750°C. The diodes are etched and sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed to various temperatltres for 10 mm and the capacitance remeasnred. For very heavily doped diodes (-1019 per cm3) observable capacitance changes occur at neutron fluences of >1015 per cm 3. The results may be interpreted in seceral ways, the simplest of which is to assume simple vacancy diffiision with small impurity -racancy interaction (at the diffiision, i.e. annealing temperature of 700°C). In this interpretation it is found that a typical vacancy makes about 1024 jumps and travels about 10-5 cm before disappearing. The required effective annihilation center density is about 1016per cm3 . Estimates of the vacancy-impurity interaction can be made and the above numbers correctecl, but for arty reasonable assumptions the number of vacancy sinks connot be much reduced. ThE complete annealing of radiation induced defects requires that the vacancies and interstitials either recombine, travel to the surface of the crystal, or travel to an annihilation center, e.g., a dislocation or a precipitate. If the interstitial is ignored except as a possible vacancy annihilation center at low temperatures,* the motion of vacancies may be followed by monitoring the corresponding motion of substitutional impurities. pfister2 has measured the enhanced diffusion of impurities in an asymmetric shallow diffused silicon structure by optically monitoring the junction movement. In these experiments we monitor instead the capacitance of a heavily-doped deep symmetric p-n junction. The sensitivity for this method is several orders of magnitude higher than in Pfister's technique, mainly for two reasons: 1) the junction capacitance of a heavily-doped junction is sensitive to impurity movements in the Angstrom range* com- and 2) the junction may be far from the surface which is a major annihilation center for vacancies. THE EXPERIMENT A p-n junction is formed by the epitaxial growth of silicon from an A1-Si alloy on a silicon substrate at a temperature in the range 650° to 750°C. The technique used is the transport of an aluminum melt through a temperature gradient.4 A 10-mil thick aluminum disc is sandwiched between two silicon wafers and the assembly raised to about 650° C with a temperature gradient normal to the sandwich. After about 8 hr the upper (hotter) wafer has been entirely transported and deposited epitaxially on the substrate wafer. The substrate and overgrowth resistivity are measured with a 4-point probe. The as-grown structure is lapped until the wafer is about 1/2 mm thick with the junction in the center. Contacts consisting of electroless nickel covered by electroplated rhodium are applied to both the p and n sides. The wafer is diced into square dice 1/2 to 1 mm on a side and the dice are etched sufficiently to remove approximately 1 mil of silicon. The following results are all for aluminum (p-side) and antimony (n-side) doped specimens with NA =3x 1018 per cm3, ND = 2-8 x 101A per cm3. The diodes are sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed and the capacitance remeasured. A special capacitance measurement method is used to insure a low sensitivity to shunt resistance. The diode is voltage driven and the current monitored by a phase lock amplifier. It is possible to adjust the detector phase to a point where shunt resistances as low as 100 O have no effect on the reading. The diodes in this study have a capacitance in the range 1000 to 5000 picofarads and a shunt resistance in the range 100 to l06 O depending on the stage of the anneal. THEORY The theoretical problem is twofold: 1) The computation of the amount of impurity diffusion and hence the impurity profile resulting from a given amount of vacancy motion, and 2) the computation of the capacitance from the impurity profile. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental capacitance (in particular the changes) yields the amount of vacancy motion. Vacancy Motion. A convenient parameter to measure the total amount of vacancy motion is Jv the total number of vacancy jumps per unit volume. Although this parameter varies with position in the crystal, owing to vacancy annihilation at the surfaces, it is approximately independent of position far from the surfaces, i.e. in the junction region. In the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in the United States, Bureau of Mines examining engineers collected several lots of ore from the Black Rock, Kramer, and. Morgan-Cromar properties, Tooele and Juab Counties, Utah. Extensive laboratory tests were made to determine the amenability of the ores to standard ore-dressing methods of concentration. The Black Rock claims 1 and 2 are 42 miles northwest of Jericho, Tooele County, Utah. A. J. Huber of Salt Lake City and Ross Rydalch of Tooele, Utah, are the owners. The deposit-is reported to be a definite manganese fissure vein in quartzite along which considerable shearing and cross fracturing have occurred. Laboratory work was conducted on a 2-ton sample of run-of-mine ore procured by a Bureau of Mines examining engineer and two smaller, higher-grade samples submitted by the owners as a result of later development. The Kramer deposit is described as a bed of manganese oxides in quartz. The property is being worked by L. E. Kramer, Tooele, Utah, and is 41 miles northwest of Jericho) Tooele County, Utah, approximately 1 mile north of the Tooele-Juab County line. A 1-ton run-of-mine sample was submitted for testing by the examining engineer.

The application of biologically assisted methods for metal extraction in the mining industry has a long history, but development of modern techniques has been relatively slow. There is, however, a resurgence of interest in the industry with the recent development of methods to successfully treat base metals concentrates. Two major pilot plant programs for treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates have been initiated in the past year and results from one are beginning to be released. This paper provides an overview of methods that have been applied in the past; from the earliest deliberate applications of the technology, through the copper and uranium heap and dump leach applications, the more highly engineered agitated tank leach gold applications and the developments currently taking place in the industry.

Many analysts have had difficulty in obtaining accurate and consistent determinations of the volatile matter in low-temperature coke when the usual standard method for coal was followed. The tendency is toward too-high results, due to mechanical losses which are extremely difficult to avoid or control. With cokes there also may be an error due to excessive oxidation of the fixed carbon. Much of the earlier experimental work on the volatile-matter determination in coal, such as that of Parr, Fieldner and Davis, and others, has been on the effect of time, temperatures, shape and size of crucibles, method of applying heat, and type of furnace, all of which data has evolved the present A.S. T. M. standard method for volatile matter in coal and coke. It is not the purpose of this investigation to deal directly with the above phases of the procedure, but rather to study some of the factors affecting the results in those types of fuel which give erroneous results due to mechanical losses. This mechanical loss is usually designated as "sparking." There are two kinds of sparks or incandescent particles which may appear: particles of soot from partially condensed carbon from the burning gases, and unburned particles of the material itself which escape. The first type does not affect the accuracy of the volatile matter results, and is therefore negligible. The second type, however, causes appreciable loss and results in showing higher volatile percentages than actually exist.

The Bureau of Mines is establishing design criteria for effective roof support systems and is developing technology to improve mine planning and design. Geologic studies, surface and underground mine monitoring, and laboratory evaluations were conducted. The seven papers in this proceedings Information Circular present results of several investigations. Addressed are problems existing in both longwall and multiple-seam mines. Discussions include the effect of dewatering at a longwall mine site in the Pittsburgh coal seam and the effect of chain pillars on subsidence. Other results are measurement and characterization of longwall rock mass movement and an integrated design for stability in multiple-seam mining.
