The first report of investigations5/ in this series pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather testing adit dealt with dust produced from blasting. The present report discusses the effect of stemming on eases generated by blasting, describes the test procedure, and analyzes the results from, blasting 61 standard rounds. Following care the types of stemming that -,re being investigated: 1, No stemming. 2. Sand in 2 paper cartridges. 3. Clay in 2 paper cartridges. 4. Commercial hydrated lime in 2 paper cartridges. 5. Combustible blasting plugs. 6. Ceramic is blasting plugs with clay in 2 paper cartridges.

The Mount Isa silver-lead-,zinc deposit possesses a number of features which sets it apart from usual occurrences of ores containing those metals. The deposit has been described in vario:us papers, but development upon deeper levels during the past two years has, yielded much information not hitherto published. Purpose of the present paper is to furnish a unified and coherent perspective by tracing briefly the full rock deformational and mineralization processes responsible for the ore deposition. The paper represents the outcome of ten years' organized geological effort at Mount Isa. Information contained in it supersedes that previously published.A bibliography of published articles relating to Mount Isa ore deposition is appended. In preparing the present paper previously published data have been drawn upon freely wherever applicable. The authors are especially indebted to the papers by Grondijs and Schouten, and by O'Malley and McGhie, which present results of systematic microscope studies of thin and polished sections from comprehensive suites of Mount Isa ore.

A review of development and a reevaluation of uses of the hydraulic air compressor are suggested by the constant changes in technology, which frequently make an old art valuable in solving current problems. Contacts with research workers in various branches of engineering indicate that this older method of producing compressed air may not be familiar to some or that its salient features might be useful in solving problems involving uses of compressed air. Briefly, a hydraulic air compressor may be described as an inverted siphon, consisting of an intake head where water and air are mingled, followed by a gravity-fall tube in which air is intimately mixed with the water and is compressed as the water pressure increases during the fall down the tube, then a separating, or stilling, chamber in which air bubbles rise to the surface of the water and collect in the upper portion of the chamber at a pressure equal to the weterhead maintained by the height of water in the discharge leg of the circuit. The water, which now contains only the fraction of air that has gone into solution, passes out of the separating chamber and rises up the discharge leg to the surface, which is, of course, at some suitable distance below the level of the intake. Present-day applications include (1) utilizing low hydraulic heads, which otherwise have little commercial values; (2) utilizing low hydraulic heads in reclamation work to supply compressed air, or in some instances to produce a small suction, for air-lift pumping (or for operation of air motors), with minimum attendance and without need for electric power; (3) utilizing medium heads, as at dam and lock installations, to produce compressed air for pneumatic operation of airlifts, gates, valves, and rubber gate seals; (4) utilizing underground waters, as in mines, to produce compressed air for general mine use; (5) using this method of isothermal compression of air in combination with standard compressors wherever hydraulic head is available, thereby securing the advantages of low-temperature intake to the mechanical compressors and reduction of moisture content below that of atmospheric air; (6) development of large air supply at pressures up to 150 p.s.i.g., which, after performing work in reciprocating or centrifugal expansion cylinders, is available at temperatures approximating -50° F. Possibilities in freezing and reheating should be mentioned which may prove economical for obtaining uniformly dry air for process work, wind-tunnel tests, or large air-conditioning installations, such as ventilation of underwater traffic tunnels, and may be economic for supply of supercharged air to gas-turbine plants.

The Bureau of Mines has been studying a modified steam-iron process using coal-derived producer gas for making either hydrogen plus carbon monoxide or methane. To provide a guide for this experimental study, compositions of equilibrium product gases for the reaction of steam plus carbon dioxide with iron were calculated and are discussed in this report. The calculations, which are described in this report, are based on thermodynamic data in the literature and cover temperatures from 800° to 1,300° K., pressures from 1 to 30 atmospheres, and hydrogen-to-carbon atomic ratios in the gas of 4 to 12. The equilibrium gas compositions are discussed in regard to making hydro-gen, carbon monoxide, and methane in the oxidation step of the modified steam-iron process. From the viewpoint of thermodynamics alone, assuming the reactions reach equilibrium, the discussion considers the effects of temperature, pressure, and composition of feed gas upon the composition of the product gas, the degree of oxidation of the iron, and the possible deposition of carbon. The results indicated the following: (1) Nearly all the carbon can be converted to methane at low temperatures (800° to 900° K.) and high pressures (over 20 atmospheres); (2) to obtain high yields of synthesis gas, high temperatures are required. For example, at 30 atmospheres, a temperature over 1,200° K. is required to convert 60 percent of the steam plus carbon dioxide to hydrogen plus carbon monoxide. Lower temperatures may be used at lower pressures) (3) oxidation of the iron increases with increasing pressure and decreases with increasing temperature; and (4) process conditions favoring carbon deposition were found within the range of variables studied, but it is thermodynamically possible to operate the oxidation process with steam and carbon dioxide outside this range of carbon deposition.

The organization of the'Explosives Division is indicated by the accompanying chart (fig. 1). As this has been discussed in a previous report3/, it will not be considered further in this report. The activities of the various units are outlined below. I. INFLAMMABILITY OF GASES AND VAPORS4/ Determination of the Explosion Hazards of Combustible Gases and Vapors Found in Mines and Industries The Explosives Division maintains, at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, a laboratory specially equipped for the determination of the explosion hazards of combustible gases and vapors. Of particular importance, is the determination of the chemical composition within which explosions may occur and beyond which there is no danger of explosion, combustion or inflammation. These limits, known as the limits of inflammability, as determined by this and other laboratories, have been compiled in Bulletin 279 of this Bureau. The last revised edition (1931) of this bulletin has been exhausted. Since it was published, the Pittsburgh laboratory has determined the limits of about 40 combustibles and has ascertained more precisely and accurately many previously published limits.

Direct current electrical systems are used in most coal mines primarily to power the main haulage trains and secondarily to feed other equipment and passageway lighting. Electrical power is supplied from rotary machines or static rectifier equipment and is distributed through the mine by open trolley wires and feeder cables. The rails of the haulageway are used as a current return path. This exposed power distribution system is very vulnerable to conditions which lead to undesired leakage currents and short circuits and, consequently, the possibility of fires or other hazards to personnel. Present techniques and equipment have been utilized in so far as practical to improve the safety of the dc electrical system; however, there still appears a need for further improvement. Because of this need, this program was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines to investigate two specific technical areas related to improvement of dc electrical system safety. One area included the determination of the characteristics of mine electrical systems and their protection requirements and the verification of the adequacy of available protective devices for mine service. Despite the widespread application of industrial protective equipment in mines, there was little detailed technical information available related specifically to the performance of this equipment in service. Our task was not only to develop useful information regarding mine system protection, but also to define and verify the adequacy of the protective devices available. This paper details Keeler/ Dorr-Oliver's experience with the application of fluid bed combustion technology to the burning of coal-mining waste. The designs of two stage fluid bed combustors/dryers are demonstrated as useful in the drying of coal, slag and coke, using coal and coal refuse (gob) as fuel. Anthracite mining refuse (culm) is more than abundant in Northeastern Pennsylvania. After demonstration at Shamokin, Pennsylvania, a full commercial-sized fluid bed boiler using culm is used for district heating in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Limited research work has shown the utility of using fine coal as filter aid in sludge in¬cineration. With the rising avenues of the suitability of coal as auxiliary fuel in fluid bed sludge incineration, an expansion of these concepts combines the use of coal or coal refuse as filter aid and auxiliary fuel. This report provides the results of an industrial engineering study that assessed the safety and efficiency of underground ore handling in U.S. metal mines. One of the primary findings of the study was the improvement needed in controlling muck size in the ore handling stream. Oversize ore causes much additional labor, creating work stoppages and is a principal cause of accidents in metal mines. This report includes data on block caving, back cut and fill room and pillar, shrinkage stoping, and sublevel stoping.

During the past 15 years the Bureau of Mines has made and published several hundred analyses of typical petroleums and has developed a system of interpreting the analyses and of classifying crude oils. In describing crude petroleum frequent reference is made to the "base" of the oil, a usage the petroleum industry has found convenient. As part of its general study of the characteristics of crude oils, therefore, the Bureau of Mines has developed a system of classifying them according to "base." This system as first published in 19274 was limited to four classes and in its original form is no longer considered adequate. Since the system was first published the Bureau has analyzed a large number of crude oil-, including representative samples from nearly every important producing field in the world, and has found that the system of classification could be revised and amplified to advantage. The revised system is presented herein. Bulletin 2916 states that many oil producers and refiners use the word "base" much as it is used in pharmaceutical work. For example, the "base" or "basis" of an ointment or salve is the fatty material (lard, petroleum, or lanolin) used as a vehicle or carrier for the active medicinal principles. Apparently many of the pioneers in the petroleum industry considered crude oil similar in nature to these medicinal products in that it consists of a semisolid, nonvolatile base and 1 volatile portion can be distilled off to make gasoline, kerosene, and other products. Many crude oils when chilled slowly deposit a waxy material (paraffin); this fact may have been one reason for the use of the term "paraffin base" in referring to such oils. Almost all of the petroleum first discovered in the United States was of this nature; not until the oil industry was extended to California and along the Gulf coast was petroleum found that contained no wax but apparently did contain asphaltic material Accordingly, these oils were known as "asphalt-base" oils. The use of this term, however, seems unfortunate, as better-grade oils of this type contain little if any asphalt; the descriptive term "naphthene base" now seems to be a more desirable term than "asphalt base." The term "intermediate base" is also used commonly in referring to oils intermediate in oharacteristios between those of paraffin and naphthene base.

In today’s highly competitive market situation, it is of outmost importance for EAF steel makers to optimise their processes in order to reduce operating costs and to improve safety and reliability of the equipment. The laser based off-gas analysis technology, With laser units installed on the fix duct, downstream the combustion gap, uses the “Tuneable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy” (TDLAS). The system performs real-time off-gas emissions measurements of CO, CO2, O2, H2O and temperature. A closed-loop operation is in place for dynamic control of the chemical energy package combustion/post-combustion of CO, H2 and CH4 gases into the EAF furnace shell. A statistical framework which builds on a data analysis engine, based on Danieli Automation Q3Intelligence technology, evaluates the “fingerprint” of the process represented by average and deviation trends of both gases and other process parameters. Process fingerprinting is conceived both for offline profile optimisation and on-line control of the refining process. This paper describes how the technology has been applied and the results achieved at ACCIAIERIE BERTOLI SAFAU (Italy) 100 t AC Electric Arc Furnace.

The record of fatalities from mine explosions in the United States during the past 44 years has been the best in the history of the mining industry, despite the fact that the number of fatalities from this cause during the past fiscal year now is nearly double that of the previous year. During there 4 fiscal years, mine explosions have resulted in an average of 45.5 deaths per year, compared with an average of 153 deaths per year for the preceding 5 years; an average of 542 deaths per year for the 3 years 1907-1909, inclusive, and a yearly average of 265 deaths per year for the 20 years prior to 1929. Other types of mine accidents also have been reduced during this period, but not to the same degree or by as large a percentage as mine explosions. The fact that in this fiscal year ended June 30, 1937, electricity was responsible for 60 percent of the explosions and 85.5 percent of the fatalities resulting therefrom (see tables 3 and 4) is evidence that either mine operators are lax in providing proper electrical equipment or there is laxity in the upkeep and use of electricity in our mines and more particularly in our coal mines. Several large coal-producing States that in the Fast have had numerous disastrous explosions have been free from such disasters for continuous periods of as long as 8 years. The bituminous mines of Pennsylvania, one of the largest coal-producing States, give a good example of what can be done to prevent explosions. 'his State, with its large number of operating mines, many with very definite hazards from gas or dust or both, has had only two major explosions (resulting in 16 fatalities) during the past 7 years; this is a decidedly good record compared with any similar period in the past and when it is considered that during this period about 750,000,000 tons of coal have been produced. Other good records are: Tennessee, without a single fatality from explosions during the past 9 years; Alabama, with 6 fatalities during the past 7 years; Illinois, with no explosions during the past 4 years; and

As President of your Institute, I take pleasure in welcoming you to this convention, and to those who come from outside of the city, I take pleasure in Welcoming you to the city of Denver. This is the first convention at Denver in fifteen months. I hope that the annual rather than the semi-annual meetings will prove satisfactory to all, and that no mistake has been made in that respect. We are gathered together here to discuss problems common to all of us, and I am sure that we will profit by such discussion. We have with us, outside of the membership of our organization, representatives of two other organizations, Mr. Callbreath of the American Mining Congress, and Mr. Huntress of the National Coal Association. [Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved chat by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate car be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation-under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there boon an indication that that this method ray become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-stream distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and, steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming less as the vacuum within the unit is increased. This report describes tie construction of a visible-action laboratory batch still and fractioning; column and. gives curtain data pertaining to the operation of the apparatus under vacuum for the production. of lubricating distillates. The apparatus was designed and built to produce lubricating distillates under as nearly ideal conditions as possible, in order that a subsequent study of the characteristics of the distillates could be made.]

A review of technical literature of the last quarter century discloses that much experimental work has been carried on in an effort to develop commercial processes for making sponge iron. In addition to the work that has been recorded, other work has been done the results of which have not been published. The degree of success or failure of these investigators does not detract from the fact that the problem has its challenging aspects and practical possibilities that encourage further investigation. The purpose of this report is to record information derived from recent experimental work that .had its 'objective the development and demonstration of one method of producing sponge iron. Work of other investigators was studied and applied wherever possible.

The Kline tract ?3.nd the Frey tract are two separate properties situated in the Wentworth district on the easterly edge of the Tri-State zinc-lead region (fig. 1). The Kline tract is in the southwestern corner of Lawrence County, Mo., and the Frey tract, 1 1/2 miles west of the Kline, is in the northeastern part of Newton County, Mo. A bureau Of Mines drilling project embraced work on both properties, but the amount of work done on the Frey tract was comparatively small. At the time of the project the Kline tract was under lease to the Wentworth Mining & Milling Co. The Surprise Mining Co. held the lease on the Frey tract. Underground workings on the generally flat-bedded are deposits of the Kline property-covered an area of-about 15 acres. No total metal-production records are available. In 1942-1943 the mine, operated by the Wentworth Mining & Milling Co., produced at an average monthly rate of 83 tons of 60-percent zinc concentrate derived from mining and milling 1,700 to 2,100 tons of ore. At the end of that period no significant amount of reserve ore was in sight. The gravity-flotation mill on the property was operating at about one-sixth capacity.

At that time the financial markets were on the verge of collapse and my presentation described the issues. Unfortunately I was correct, and global markets went into a steep nosedive, creating the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression.In hindsight, there were plenty of signs that this was coming. The Supercycle had created massive new wealth. This wealth was largely invested in the United States due to the country’s political stability and credit worthiness. In 2004, the large investment banks convinced the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to allow them to triple their borrowing leverage ratios. This made the banks more vulnerable to market volatility. The banks then lent money to NINJAS - people with no income, no job and no assets. Even worse was the fact that these unqualified home owners used adjusted-rate mortgages (ARMs) which they, of course, intended to refinance prior to interest rates rising. These mortgages were then bundled up by the banks and sold to investors as “safe” investment products. The money flowed into these products because the rating agencies gave these instruments high marks. These same agencies earned their fees from the very same banks seeking high ratings. (No conflict there). Private debt exploded and peaked out in 2008.These mortgage products were sold in an unregulated shadow banking system and the ARMs came due. Toxic mortgage default rates skyrocketed and the mortgage-backed securities collapsed in value. This house of cards had a negative feedback loop that accelerated the market crash and resulted in more than $1.5 trillion being lost in the securitization sector, a 47 percent decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, foreclosure rates skyrocketing and housing prices collapsing. The financial markets were in a nosedive."

DURING my trip around the world last year, covering a total of 45,000 miles, I saw many things of especial interest from an engineering viewpoint. Sailing from New York, I went through the Panama Canal, down along the west coast of South America, then over the Peruvian and Bolivian Uplands; thence to the celebrated copper mines of Chile; across the Andes, to Buenos Aires, then to Rio Janeiro; across the Atlantic to Lisbon, Portugal; through Spain to the Rio Tinto mines; across southern Europe to Italy; thence to Alexandria and Cairo; up the Nile to Assouan, to Palestine through the Suez Canal, Red Sea and across to Bombay; up to the country of the Moghul Emperors; then to Calcutta, from which point I shipped to Singapore, as having crossed the Equator twice, I wished to shake hands with it again; thence to Shanghai and Pekin; up to the Great Wall of China, back to Nanking and up the Yangtse to Hankow; then back and eastward across the Pacific Ocean. The climatic changes were sudden and severe; there was winter where, for me, it should have been summer and vice versa. The weather man was very kind, however, and until I was near the Aleutian Islands there were only three rainy days in a total of 220.
