Decarbonising explosives manufacturing and catalysing low-carbon mining supply is a significant global challenge. Low-carbon manufacturing precincts – clusters of geographically close businesses across multiple industries that share a goal of adopting firmed renewable energy and decarbonising process emissions – offer one potential solution. In an Australian first, Orica commissioned tertiary catalyst abatement technology in 2023 to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at its Kooragang Island (KI) facility in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The EnviNOx® technology (ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions AG, Dortmund, Germany) used reduces nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas arising as a by-product of nitric acid manufacture. As a result, mining customers in NSW are now benefitting from ammonium nitrate (AN) products that are almost 50 per cent less emissions-intensive than those Orica previously offered. The $37 million project is a private-public partnership that has involved partners across Federal and State government, global engineering and technology vendors, local community groups and local carbon advisors to overcome financial barriers.

The anthracite industry, which produces about 50 million net tons of coal annually, has been talked of as being able to last for another century; but if the water record of the past century continues into the expected century, this expectation of many years production still to come out of the remaining reserves will not be attained. The industry will be a submerged one in fact as well as in name. A recorded forecast of what has since occurred appears on page 34 of the Mine Inspectors' reports of 1897: It should also be noticed that bodies of water had accumulated in parts of abandoned mines before duplicate surveys of the same were required by law; and as a result we have today to contend with bodies of water, the exact location and position of which are not correctly known. Since that date, 47 years ago, the implications of the foregoing comment have grown enormously. In the period between 1923 and 1940, abandonment of collieries in the southern field resulted in the flooding of approximately 60 sq. miles (30 per cent) of the field. The ahandonment of collieries in this field has imposed additional expense for pumping on the collieries still operating. This condition will be aggravated by the extension of developments and cause suspension of operations if economic conditions do not justify the assumption of additional pumping costs. During the years, the region's rainfall has not altered, but the quantity going inside the mines through breakages in the surface, brought about by extraction of the coal, has increased materially, as indicated by the ratio of tons of water pumped to tons of coal produced underground for one of the large companies in the northern anthracite field: Year Ratio 1920................. 8.4:1 1925.................. 10.6:I I930.................. Modern mining companies are increasingly turning to integrate digital technologies and circular economy (CE) principles to increase the sustainability of their operations. The so-called “mine of the future” is envisioned as a smart, integrated system where technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, digital twins, and real-time data analytics work in harmony with human decision-making and environmental responsibility. Already in 2018, McKinsey and Co. identified that the three drivers that would define a technology-enabled change in mining would be technology, including digital, analytics and automation, management systems able to identify the potential and value of the new technologies, and the culture and capabilities of the organisation, leaning to more agile and responsive organisations. From the three drivers, in the last five years most developments have been centred in the first one. Yet despite rapid advances, the adoption of new technologies across the industry today remains uneven and often slower than expected. Furthermore, it has been identified that the problem on the technology uptake often relay on the lack of operational readiness, process incompatibility or misalignment, and resistance to change within the mining operation. At the same time, leading companies like Rio Tinto, BHP, and Anglo American have each launched major digital transformation programs. Rio Tinto, for instance, operates one of the world’s largest autonomous mining fleets and has integrated digital technologies across nearly all its operations (Rio Tinto, 2025). BHP is actively investing in information and communication technology (ICT) development as artificial intelligence, big data analytics and robotics, and has partnered with battery companies to pursue circular economy initiatives. Only in 2024, their ICT spending reached US$ 438.3 million (Global Data, 2024). Anglo American has rolled out its FutureSmart Mining™ framework, explicitly aligning innovation with circularity and sustainability goals (Anglo American, 2025). The accelerating pace of change across leading mining companies along with the uneven adoption in the technology uptake clearly state how digital transformation is no longer just about implementing new tools, instead it requires a fundamental shift in how people, processes, and culture are aligned. Addressing only the technical layer, while neglecting the human and organizational dimensions, leaves transformation efforts fragile and unsustainable. As the industry must act decisively to close this gap, the true test of transformation is today centred in changing behaviours, mindsets, and systems. Even at the listed leading companies, initiatives have encountered cultural and structural resistance that are relatable to the industry in large: siloed departments fail to collaborate, procurement teams focus on upfront costs rather than lifecycle value, and operators are often excluded from early-stage planning, reducing buy-in. In many cases, a lack of communication or failure to link technology to real operational bottlenecks leads to disengagement at the ground level. This friction reveals a broader issue: mining organizations have historically treated technology and culture as separate domains, when in fact they are deeply interdependent. To address this, the authors propose a systems engineering approach focusing on the mining operations as a complex socio-technical system composed of people, processes, and technologies. Systems engineering offers tools and frameworks for mapping interactions, aligning incentives, designing for feedback and adaptation, and integrating change across organizational boundaries. Specifically, besides technical requirements, it demands treating culture not as an afterthought or side-effect, but as a design variable that must be intentionally shaped alongside infrastructure and workflows. This paper explores how this approach can be applied in practice, by analysing a real-world case scenario where resistance to innovation was overcome not by technical capabilities alone, but through alignment of stakeholder incentives, thoughtful communication, and cultural integration. A particular focus is set on the adoption journey of the Powerbit X, a drill bit technology with significant potential for operational and environmental gains.

The mining investment analyst's needs mainly centre around the-micro and macro aspects affecting the mining industry in general. The mine manager needs a tool to assist him with the planning, reporting and controlling of production, costs, efficiency, productivity and cashflow. For the mining student studying Financial Evaluation, the main need is for a computer program which will assist him in learning the basics of the subject. This paper concentrates on the needs and objectives of the course Financial Mine Evaluation, the approach to which is presented. Emphasis is placed on the practical computing sessions and the role of the FCS-EPS package as a training tool.

"THE YEAR 1959 appeared to be a good one in which to attempt a summary of progress in the location and study of sulphide deposits in Canada because a temporary surplus of metals caused prices to fall and many geologists who had been working like beavers were suddenly not so hard pressed. So it was •decided to arrange a Symposium. The response to the call for contributions was excellent and the result is the interesting collection of papers that follow.Activity in the search for massive sulphide deposits has never been as intense as in Canada since 1954. That was the year when the airborne electro-magnetometer first became generally available on a contract basis. These instruments work best on massive sulphide bodies, as do most of the ground electrical survey devices, so much of the new information relates to these. It was decided, therefore, to focus attention in the preparation of symposium papers on such masses. This served also to keep the survey within reasonable limits."

If a conductor traversed by an electric current is broken, a conduction forms in the air between the two broken ends of the wire. This conduction manifests itself in an initial phase by an electric spark and, in a second phase, by an arc if the the circuit continues to supply sufficient power. This arc goes out when the distance between the two ends of the conductor becomes sufficiently large. If the break occurs in an explosive atmosphere, the energy contributed by the arc can cause an explosion. To avoid such accidents, electric circuits that may be utilized in hazardous atmospheres can be made "intrinsically safe". The investigation which we conducted is part of a research project on the intrinsic safety of arcs of high intensity but short duration, in the case of resistive circuits. We developed an electronic system which makes it possible to limit the duration of an arc at the level of the break of a conductor traversed by a current with a possible maximum intensity of 80 amperes. This experimental device for monitoring and measuring the parameters of the arc has shown that arcs of high intensity but with a duration limited to a few microseconds do not ignite an explosive methane-air mixture.

In the 39 years from 1891 to 1929 , gas and dust explosions in the coal mines of Tennessee caused 413 deaths , or one- third of the fatalities in the mines for that period . Inasmuch as explosions caused but about 15 per cent of mine fatalities for the whole United States for this same period it is evident that the Tennessee coal mining record is by no means good , as far as explosion fatalities are concerned . Since 1926 , Tennessee has had a clear record as to fatalities from explosions ; this fact may be credited very largely to the improved conditions and safer practices in Tennessee's coal mines which have been brought about by the work of the State Inspection Department and of the Southern Appalachian Coal Operators Association directed toward adoption of safety precautions and practices most of which are advocated by the United States Bureau of Mines . Chief among these improvements are the replacement of black powder and dynamite by permissible explosives , improved ventilation , and the installation of rigid methods of inspection for gas . With the present tendency for operations to pass into the hands of responsible and informed management , and with unrelaxed care and inspection , the good record of the past several years should be maintained .

The separation of fine mineral particles, especially using environmentally friendly approaches, is one of the main problems in the processing of low-grade ores and the re-processing of mining tailings. This work assesses the potential of biosurfactants as collectors in the flotation of ultrafine (smaller than 20 μm) particles of hematite and malachite. As biosurfactants, we test acetylated acidic (ac-ASL) and lactonic sophorolipids (ac-LSL). In addition, n-dodecyl-β-D-maltoside (DDM) is used as a model non-ionic alkyl disaccharide surfactant, and sodium oleate (NaOl) is used as a reference. The biosurfactants are characterized using surface tension and foam analysis. The interaction of the minerals with the surfactants is characterized using zeta potential, solubility, and single-mineral flotation. The collecting properties of the surfactants are compared for the ultrafine (− 20 μm) and coarser (38–90 μm) particle size in the two-mineral flotation of hematite and malachite against quartz. The ultrafine particle size improves the grade in the oleate flotation of hematite, as well as the grades in the DDM flotation of hematite and malachite, which is explained by the weak interactions of the metal oxides with fatty acids and DDM. At the same time, the flotation with ac-LSL and ac-ASL is highly tolerant to the ultrafine particle size. These results indicate that biosurfactants are an interesting alternative to conventional petroleum-based surfactants in the flotation of Fe and Cu oxides. Moreover, a proper selection of surfactants can help combat the problem of fines.

The Quick-Erect Stopping System (QESS) offers a new way of reducing the radon exposures of miners in Germany, especially during remediation work in old mines. The QESS is a light-weight, modular, and reusable construction kit of interlocking telescopic aluminum tubes, radon-proof foil, and expanding foam. It is designed to seal off radon-rich parts of galleries within only a few minutes. Originally, the QESS was developed to protect miners against radon exposures. Then, the QESS found the attention of several mine rescue teams at a German mining conference. The Student Mine Rescue of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and the Wismut Mine Rescue carried out firstmine rescue drills in Freiberg and Schlema. Additionally, a mine rescue drill was carried out by the Front Range Mine Rescue in the Edgar Experimental Mine of the Colorado School of Mines. These drills helped to improve the systemand highlighted its potential for mine rescue operations. Now, the QESS is wellsuited for small-scale mining. The QESS can be used to seal off galleries in only a few minutes to both protect miners fromradon exposures and to support mine rescue operations. Moreover, the QESS was also successfully used in ventilation experiments.

The United States Geological Survey has estimated 1 that the State of Washington contains 11,412,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and 52,442,000,000 tons of subbituminous coal, in beds more than 14 inches thick. As the present rate of production is about 4,000,000 tons a year, Washington apparently contains coal enough to supply Pacific coast markets for many years. The character of the coal beds of Washington renders the production of clean coal very difficult, and a considerable proportion of the output is washed before it is marketed. In 1915 Washington ranked fifth among the States in the amount of coal washed, though only twentieth in total output. In that year 37.9 per cent of the coal produced in the State was treated in surface cleaning plants. On account of extensive folding and faulting of the coal measures, mining in Washington presents many difficulties; therefore a description of the methods employed at some of the mines may be useful in planning operations in other regions, and is presented in this bulletin. The coals of Washington differ in quality, ranging from true lignites in Cowlitz County in the southern part of the State to anthracites in the Mount Baker district of Whatcom County, in the north~ rn part. Most of the output consists of subbituminous and bituminous coals, the latter including both coking and noncoking varieties. Analyses of the coals of the State and descriptions of the beds from which the samples were taken have been printed in publications of the United States Bureau of Mines.2 Details of coal beds and analyses of the coals of King, Kittitas, and Pierce Counties have also been published by the Washington Geological Survey; 3 and most of the coal beds of the State are described in some detail in a bulletin of the United States Geological Survey.4 In 1918 mining was in progress at 72 mines in the State 4a; 46 of these mines each employed more than 10 men underground. These mines were distributed as follows: Thurston County, 1; Lewis County, 7; Kittitas County, 14; King County, 16; Pierce County, 6; Skagit County, 1; and Whatcom County, 1. During that year a total of 5,847 men were employed, 4,172 underground and 1,675 on the surface. The average number of days worked in the State was 275, and the average yearly output per man was 706 tons. Coke is made only in Pierce County by four companies, which have a total of 341 beehive ovens. In 1918 they produced 93,699 tons of coke. Up to 1919 mining machines were little used in the State. In 1917 only 6.61 per cent of the coal :produced was undercut by machines. In that year 58.95 per cent of the coal was mined by hand, and 34.44 per cent was shot off the solid. The explosives used were as follows: Black powder, 36.6 per cent; dynamite, 38.l per cent; and permissible, 25.3 per cent. The State of Washington is divided naturally into two parts by the Cascade Mountains which extend north and south somewhat west of the middle of the State. The coal areas east of the range will hereafter be referred to as eastern Washington-though nearly all of it is west of the middle of the State-and that on the west side as western Washington. The geographical distribution of the coal fields is shown in Plate I. Exploration of the State has not been exhaustive enough to preclude the possibility of discovering, besides the foregoing, other districts that contain deposits of coal in commercial quantities.

OCCURRENCES of salt in Alberta have been mentioned and described by the writer in 1929 (l) and by Cole in 1930 (2). Brine springs occur at a number of places along the valley of Athabaska river north of latitude 56 degrees, and also on the south margin of Salt prairie, twenty-five miles west of Fitzgerald in the vicinity of the 60th parallel of latitude, which is the boundary between Alberta and the Northwest Territories. These salt springs were visited by Sir James Richardson in 1820, and in the same year D. W. Harmon stated that " ... clown Salt river there are several places where almost any quantity of excellent dean white salt may be taken with as much ease as sand along the seashore" (3). One hundred years later, in 1920, when the writer first visited these springs, the "dean white salt" which had accumulated about the springs was about 400 tons ( 4). This paper deals with a thick deposit of rock-salt which has been proved by drilling in the vicinity of McMurray. Particular attention will be given to a well drilled at Waterways early in 1936 by Industrial Minerals, Limited, when a continuous bed of rock-salt was penetrated with a thickness of 199 feet. As this paper is being presented, a salt plant is being completed and a production well is being drilled at the plant. < is salt deposit is in the vicinity of McMurray, close to the junction of the Clearwater and Athabaska rivets, in township 89, range 9, west of the 4th meridian. McMurray is about 240 miles northeast from Edmonton. As shown on Figure 1, Clearwater river, which rises at Methy portage, in Saskatchewan, enters Athabaska river at McMurray. Some three miles above the mouth of Clearwater river, the Hangingstone enters from the southwest. Waterways, where the latest salt development has taken place, is situated at the end of the Northern Alberta railway, a distance of 304 miles from Edmonton. This railway reaches the bottom of the Clearwater valley at Draper station, about 3 miles east of Waterways and near the mouth of Deep creek. The Draper bituminous sand plant is approximately half a mile east of Draper station. About one mile south of the townsite of McMurray, Horse river enters the Athabaska from the east.

The economics of a mineral processing circuit is dependent on the numerous sensors that are critical to optimization and control systems. The sheer volume of sensors results in mines not being able to keep the sensors calibrated. When a sensor goes off calibration, it results in errors which can severely impact plant economics. Normally, these errors are not detected until the error grows and becomes a large (“gross”) error. Undetected errors are not remedied until the next calibration, which on average are a year apart Beamex (2019) [1] across all industries. Classical statistical methods that depend on linear relationships between input and response variables are typically used to find gross errors, but are not effective for highly non-linear and non-stationary operations in mining and mineral processing industries. Calibration of sensors is time-consuming and generally requires physical intervention that results in equipment downtimes causing production losses. Therefore, in situ detection methods are warranted that do not require physical removal of sensors to compare with standard measurements or well-calibrated sensors. Data-mining based techniques and algorithms have high success rate in tackling such problems. This paper presents results from a groundbreaking multi-year big data research project whose goal was to develop data-mining-based original techniques in a multi-sensor environment to identify when sensors start to stray, rather than wait for errors to grow. The carbon stripping (gold) circuit in the Pogo Mine of Alaska was selected for this project. Maintaining strip vessel temperatures at optimum levels is crucial for maximizing gold recoveries at Pogo, and hence the focus was on the temperature sensors of the two strip vessels. An automated algorithm to detect errors in strip vessel temperature sensors was developed that exploited data from multiple sensors in the strip circuit. This algorithm was able to detect with a high success rate when bias errors of magnitude as low as ± 2% were artificially induced into strip vessel temperature data streams. The detection times of about 1 month were much less than the industry average calibration frequency of 1 year. Thus, the algorithm helps detect errors early, without stopping the circuit. The algorithm alarms can serve as triggers when calibrations are done. Experimental methodology along with results, limitations of algorithms, and future research are also presented in this paper.

Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company is currently mining in four pit areas; Live Oak, Red Hill, Thornton and Joe Bush Extension, near Globe, Arizona. Small satellite orebodies lying outside the main pits have been mined out in a series of small open pits. Major slope instability has affected production in every pit. Some consequences of the instability have been; (1) Serious interruption of mining plans, which resulted in deferred ore production, lost ore, reduced mining rates and increased stripping requirements. (2) Forced replacement of crushing facilities. (3) Serious effects on other production facilities. The introduction of a slope stability monitoring and control function as an integral part of mine planning has been successful in reducing the impact of these failures and will eventually result in economic pit design based on probabilistic slope analysis. This case history presents a brief review of the problems associated with slope instability at Inspiration&apos;s mines followed by a more detailed report on one specific failure area in the Thornton pit where the use of horizontal drain holes for slope stabilization appears to be successful. Relationships between slope movement rate, rainfall, and mining activity are shown.

General Description Due to the extreme cold weather experienced in Flin Flon during the winter months, thought and precaution were necessary in the design of the plant buildings. The machine shop, carpenter shop, drill shop, and coal plant buildings are similar in the building materials used in their construction. They are sided with two-inch shiplap, insulated with celotex and asbestos paper, and covered with corrugated iron on all side-walls. Roofing consists of 2 by 4 lumber on edge, laminated, and further covered by celotex and three-ply roofing. These buildings are heated by means of unit heaters. The heaters are primarily steam-heated radiators, through which the air of the buildings is circulated by electrically-driven fans. Our machine shop is located to the east of, but central to, the main operating buildings of the mine and plant, and is so connected by a net work of tracks as to be able to serve all portions of the entire plant conveniently. The building is divided into two bays, the main bay 53 ft. by 340 ft., and the east bay 24 ft. by 340 ft. The shop office and drafting room, a two-story annex 24 ft. by 30 ft., is located on the west side of the shop. The arrangement within the shop is such as to house conveniently the several departments, namely, heavy machine tool section, repair floor section, boiler shop heavy tool and floor section, blacksmith heavy tool and forge section, tool room, electric welding rooms, stock room, tin and copper shop, and electrical parts and armature winding and repair shop (see Figure 1). All the heavy tools, the repair floor section, and railway tracks are so located in the large open bay as to be fully serviced by an electrically operated 15-ton bridge crane, with a span of 50 feet and a travel the full length of the shop. A standard-gauge railway track, branched off the main line, penetrates the full depth of the building. This track lies along the extreme east side of the main bay, allowing easy entrance and movement of rolling stock and heavy machinery, loaded on standard flat-cars, to the repair floors in the main bay. Eight jib cranes, affixed to building columns, further facilitate the heavy repair work throughout the various shop divisions. Our light and heavy machine tools are standard equipment, not unlike tools used in mine, mill, and railway shops.

Mining companies are now looking for more effective ways to engage the community in public participation. Consensus-based approaches are becoming the most popularly applied way of achieving meaningful public participation. This paper introduces the principles surrounding consensus-building approaches and the processes for getting them started. The Healthy Communities Movement is one such consensus-based approach that offers a well-established holistic model for conceptualizing a healthy sustainable community. It also highlights the importance of public participation as an essential component of achieving a sustainable community. The paper concludes by illustrating how current company-community relations programs can utilize these models.

1. Reserves were estimated for three coal beds: Lantana, Sewanee, and Richland. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves for all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 34 million short tons as of Januray 1, 1954. Of this total, 15 million short tons represents coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were insufficient to permit making an estimate conforming with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves determined by this investigation.
