This publication combines a critical review of the literature on the microbiology of coal with an introduction to those areas of microbiology related to studies of coal as a biological material. The attack on coal by microorganisms as yet remains doubtful. Only the low-rank coals contain an indigenous microbial flora, and even these organisms are not peculiar to coal, but are common soil and water forms. No experimental data have as yet been presented, either in the literature or in the present work, which unequivocally demonstrate the oxidation of coal by microorganisms. Reasons for the resistance of coal to such attack, including insolubility, physicochemical structure, steric hindrance of enzyme action, and the presence of antibiotic materials in coal are discussed. Microorganisms do attack large aromatic molecules and the mode of oxidation of aromatic ring systems by bacteria is presented. Well-defined pathways are known for the oxidation of polycyclic compounds with one to three rings, and these paths with their key intermediates are described and related to the possible oxidation of coal.

The great problem at Port Pirie and many other lead smelters has always been to keep the lead content of the slags down to a low level. This has been done in the past largely by empirical methods, the lead content varying from less than 1 per cent to over 4 per cent, the more usual figure being something under 2 per cent. Subsidiary to this, but of major importance in the future, was the extraction of the considerable quantities of zinc in the slag. At this stage little was known about the constitution of the slags apartfrom their chemical composition. Some early work on slag constitution was carried out in the B.H.A.S. Research Laboratories between 1919 and 1921, but except for a microscopic examination of a few thin sections the greater part of this investigation wasdevoted to the recovery of the zinc content of the slag by leaching methods.In 1949, therefore, it was decided to initiate a programme of fundamental research into the constitution and properties of the lead blast furnace slags. The information thus gained would give a clearer picture of reactions taking place in the slag, both in the blast furnace and during dezincing.There was also the hope that these results would lead to improved industrial techniques resulting in smaller lead losses, and, taking the long-term view, to efficient methods of producing zinc from the slags.A series of investigations was therefore begun at various centres over a period of time. In the deformation of a metal or a single-phase alloy all the crystals composing the metal after their shape in a similar manner as the metal in bulk and to about· the same extent. This is not the case in an alloy consisting of two phases of different resistance to plastic deformation. In such an alloy the two phases take part in the deformation approximately in inverse proportion to their hardness, at least at the beginning of the deformation. (1) The hardness difference becomes less in the course of the deformation and thereby the deformation more equal. The phenomena occurring during cold-rolling of some two-phase alloys have been investigated by H. Unckel who made statistical grain measurements of the degree of deformation of the two phases after various reductions by rolling and also microscopical observations of the flow in the neighbourhood of the grain boundaries. Because of the different relative flow of the two phases, the normal flow is disturbed in the vicinity of their boundaries, and some additional plastic flow must take place in these regions, the disturbance being levelled out at some distance from the boundary. The deformation of the two phases present simultaneously in the material should thus be different from that of each phase separately. The investigation of theimportance and the effects of this interaction of crystals of different phases is the subject of this paper.The deformation of crystals occurs as a gliding of crystal layers following crystallographic laws. In consequence of this slip the crystals composing the material tend to assume a common orientation, i.e. some crystallographic axes tend to become parallel to each other in all the crystals. The type of this preferred orientation depends on the type of the crystal and the working process. Any change in the mechanism of deformation results, therefore, in a change in the preferred orientation. Such a change in kind and degree of preferred orientation will, therefore, also occur if the interaction of crystals in a two-phase alloy gives rise to a mechanism of deformation different from that in the free phases.The present paper describes a study of the preferred orientation, the microstructure and hardness in wires of brass drawn to various extents.The development of preferred orientations in the two phases with increasing reduction was followed up in various layers of the wire.EXPERIMENTAL DETAILSThe experiments were carried out with a commercial 5 S.W.G. wire (0,212 in. diameter) containing: 62·7% Cu, 37·3% Zn, very faint traces...

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Antamina, Peru is the largest Cu-Zn skarn deposit in the world. Skarn mineralisation is focused around a multiphase Miocene intrusive complex comprising at least eight distinct phases identified by cross-cutting relationships, including truncated veins, xenoliths and chilled margins. Skarn alteration and mineralisation, as observed in drill core, remain open at depths exceeding 2.2 vertical kilometres.Porphyry intrusions occur as four major phases with subphases (from oldest to youngest): P1 (a, b), P2 (a, b), P3 (a, b) and two dykes of uncertain timing named Oscarina-1 and Oscarina-2. P1a is a hornblende-biotite quartz diorite porphyry with pervasive K-alteration, local endoskarn and 30–40 per cent sheeted quartz veins, all of which obscure original igneous textures. P1b dacite porphyry is a minor unit with <10 per cent phenocrysts and <3 per cent quartz veins. P1b cuts P1a; P2 dykes cut both units. P2a porphyritic biotite quartz monzonite contains K-feldspar megacrysts up to 4 cm long, local K-alteration and 2–80 per cent quartz stockwork veins. P2b biotite monzonite porphyry contains approximately 50 per cent phenocrysts and typically <10 per cent quartz veins. P3a (brown groundmass porphyry) and P3b (coarse phenocryst porphyry) are minor in volume and extent, and both cut P2 bodies. Oscarina dykes comprise two separate but parallel bodies. Oscarina-1 is a feldspar-phyric rhyolite porphyry, while Oscarina-2 is an intensely chloritised andesite porphyry. Oscarina-1 has a U-Pb (laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS)) age of 10.1 ± 0.1 Ma, whereas P2 U-Pb zircon ages (LA-ICP-MS) range from 10.0 ± 0.2 Ma to 9.9 ± 0.3 Ma.All the intrusive phases contain quartz veins, with P1a and P2a having the most intensive K-alteration and most abundant quartz veins ± endoskarns. Each phase may have contributed to mineralisation at the right depths and within favourable wall rocks (ie marble) during uplift of the Antamina structural block. The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. "*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Eng(Mining Engineering) degreeAfriTin Mining Limited plans to reopen the Uis tin mine in Namibia and establish a pilot processing plant for phase 1 of the Uis tin project, which is scheduled to commence in the last quarter of 2018 . A mining plan is required for phase 1 to supply the new pilot processing plant with 500 kt of run-of-mine ore per annum, for a period of 5 years. New geological mapping and three-dimensional modelling of the mining area were utilized to identify the most optimal mining locations that require low initial waste stripping. An open-pit mining method was selected to target the surface outcrops of the pegmatite orebodies. The mine design criteria were determined and used as input to generate the mine design by utilizing professional engineering software. The mine design was optimized and an overall stripping ratio of 0.81 was achieved. A 5-year production schedule was developed for the mine design according to quarterly periods of three months. A fixed production target of 125 kt of ore was assigned to the quarterly periods, and a ramp-up production target of 65 kt of ore was assigned for the first period. The mobile mining equipment requirements were calculated, and recommendations were made for implementing the 5-year mining plan. IntroductionAfriTin Mining Limited is the owner of the Uis tin project in Namibia and plans to reopen the Uis tin mine, which is located near the town of Uis, approximately 164 km north of Swakopmund. The Uis tin mine was owned and operated by Imkor Tin, a subsidiary of Iscor South Africa. Mining commenced in 1958, and the operation was closed in 1991. Steffen Robertson & Kirsten (SRK) defined the life of mine (LOM) plan for the historical Uis mine in 1989. The SRK report estimated the historical resources and reserves, which consisted of sixteen cassiterite-bearing pegmatite orebodies. SRK developed the most economical pit designs to provide the highest average tin grade at the lowest practical waste stripping ratio. Exploration data from the SRK report of 1989 was used extensively throughout this study, since no new exploration drilling has been conducted. The pegmatites are present as large, subvertical and outcropping veins up to 100 m in thickness. Once phase 1 is operational, mining will be conducted using conventional open pit mining methods. Initial production will be from exposed pegmatite veins in the old mine workings. AfriTin plans to establish a pilot processing plant by the end of 2018 to beneficiate run-of-mine ore at a rate of 500 kt per annum."

A theoretical model for gas outbursts in underground coal mines is as follows. An outburst is the structural failure ofcoal due to excess stress resulting from body forces caused by gas pressure gradients. These body forces influence the stability of a mine face in the same manner that gravitational body forces affect the stability of the roof of a mine. The magnitude ofthese body forces can be appreciated when it is realized that for an average density coal, the gravitational body force is equal in magnitude to the force from a gas flow with a pressure gradient of 14 kPa m-I. Gas pressure gradients and the resultant stresses within a seam can be calculated with numerical methods. Thus, providing the necessary parameters can be measured or estimated, in principle the theory can be applied to compare the outburst risk of various mining arrangements.

Most people involved in the mining industry are familiar with student-industry co-op work-study programs. Many colleges and universities have used them for years. Northern College’s Haileybury School of Mines student co-op program adds a new dimension of productivity to the college and the mining industry. The college is located in Hailey-bury, Ontario, Canada. An example of the program’s success is the school’s relationship with Sabin Metal’s SMC (Canada) Ltd.’s McAlpine Mill in Cobalt, Ontario. Students gain practical knowledge and experience while industry gains an eager-to-learn worker. And many of the college’s advanced research services are made available to industry to supplement their own capabilities. The McAlpine Mill was established to provide custom milling of slags and ores. It also recovers metal values from other products of the primary and secondary precious metal industries.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. At Calliachar Burn, 14 steeply dipping quartz-sulphide veins, with and without gold, infill master joints that crosscut gently dipping metasediments and metabasics of the Pitlochry Schist Formation. The wallrock is extremely bleached and enriched in sericite, chlorite and carbonate. Gold grades vary from high with quartz-galena-pyrite to low with galena-chalcopyrite; the gold forms electrum inclusions smaller than 20 micrometres in pyrite or, rarely, arsenopyrite. At Urlar Burn, gold is present in small amounts in 4 quartz-galena-chalcopyrite veins. Although much of the mineralogy is similar to that at Calliachar, there are significant differences in Sb-, Te-, Bi- and Hg-bearing phases. Fluid inclusion data suggest mineralisation occurred over the range 320-140 degrees C, from fluids with significant CO2 and 2-13 wt% equiv. NaCl. Mantle-derived fluids appear to have been generated during the late Caledonian and focused by the Urlar Burn fault

Posteriormente en 1942, se inicia la primera campaña de perforación diamantina exploratoria y en 1969, se inicia la etapa de construcción y desbroce de material para preparar la mina. De otro lado, se ha desarrollado un modelo de la evolución del yacimiento desde las rocas preminerales del Grupo Toquepala, de las cuales la andesita basáltica fue una gran receptora de la mineralización de cobre originada por la intrusión de un primer pulso de latita porfirítica.

Construction of a new approach embankment for a railroad bridge over a river in Southern California required placing up to 12 ft of fill over soft to medium stiff silts and clays along an approximate 1,500-ft long stretch. The embankment, situated within a narrow railroad right-of-way between an existing live track and existing buildings, would have been susceptible to excessive settlement that could damage existing buildings and numerous underground utilities if regular weight soil fill had been placed over the unimproved ground. To limit total and differential static settlements to tolerable levels, a design was developed using a combination of mechanically stabilized earth wall with lightweight cellular concrete fill and rigid inclusions ground improvement. This paper describes the design of the ground improvement system, construction methods used, and challenges of working next to live railroad traffic. Ground improvement quality control and assurance measures, and verification of performance by settlement monitoring are also addressed. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The 0.9-mile San Diego River Double Track (SDRDT) project is located on the Los Angeles-San Diego- San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Corridor in San Diego, California. The project includes the replacement of the existing 900-ft long single track railroad bridge over the San Diego River with twin double track structures. Construction of the project is phased and closely coordinated with the associated Mid-Coast light rail project (San Diego Trolley Blue Line Extension). The new bridge is a 7-span, twin steel, through girder structure supported by six cast-in-place reinforced concrete pier caps and two abutments. The large diameter cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) foundations are up to 9 ft in diameter, with upper portions encased in a 1.5-in.-thick permanent steel casing. The north abutment approach embankment includes a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall up to approximately 10 ft high and 1,520 ft long. This paper focuses on the design and construction of the north approach embankment. The project site is characterized by challenging geotechnical and seismic conditions. The site contains liquefiable soils interbedded with soft cohesive soils, underlain by competent layers of sand/gravel/cobble and other sedimentary formations. Static settlement of the new railroad, crossing utilities and adjacent buildings was a primary design concern for the north approach embankment.

The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is 57 km (35 miles) long and consists of two par-allel single-track tubes with an ex-cavation diameter ranging from 8.8 to 9.5 m (28.8 to 31.2 ft). These are interlinked by cross-passages every 312 m (1,000 ft). Two multifunction stations (MFS) are located in the sections Sedrun and Faido, at one-third and two-thirds of the entire tunnel length (Fig. 1). These will be used for the diversion of trains to the other main tube via tunnel crossovers, for the housing of tech-nical infrastructure and equipment and for potential emergency stops. To reduce construction time, the GBT was divided into five sections and was excavated from several sites simultaneously. The tunnel was excavated from the two portals, Erstfeld in the north and Bodio in the south, and also from three intermediate attacks, with their corresponding access tunnels, in Amsteg and Faido and two vertical 800-m (2,624-ft) deep shafts in Sedrun.

Coal production in the United States reached a record level in 2005, ending the year at 1.03 Gt (1,133.3 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2005 was 19.2 Mt (21.2 million st) higher than the 2004 level of 1 Gt (1,112.1 million st) and surpassed the prior record set in 2001 by 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st). Although total U.S. coal consumption rose in 2005, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sector by 2.2 percent and declined in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly.

Mineral deposits of the central New Guinea region (Gunung Bijih, Ok Tedi, Mount Kare, Porgera, Frieda River) and of southeastern New Guinea (Wau-Edie Creek, Wafi, Hamata, Hidden Valley, Tolukuma, Misima) are associated with hot, forceful intrusions of magma of mantle origin that penetrated thick Precambrian and Palaeozoic continental crust. The interaction of high- temperature melt with continental crust, and the differentiation of melt while in transit through thick crust, may be factors in generating ore. Mineralised intrusives in central New Guinea are a result of Neogene- Quaternary magmatism and were emplaced in a foreland thrust belt environment, a setting similar to the (mineralised) Laramide intrusions of southwestern USA. In both cases, central New Guinea and the Laramide, magmatism is not obviously subduction- related. Mineralised intrusives in south- eastern New Guinea (Wau-Edie Creek, etc.), also, are in a thrust belt setting, and are not obviously subduction-related. The association of. gold in southeastern New Guinea with a second (Pliocene) phase of igneous activity, rather than with earlier (Miocene) activity suggests that re-working by successive intrusions may be a factor in localising ore. This is seen, also, in the Bismarck-Solomon islands region where the richer deposits are associated with later (Pliocene) intrusives rather than with earlier (Eocene-Oligocene) intrusives. Unlike the mainland mineral deposits, those of the Bismarck-Solomon islands are clearly subduction-related.

Improved product development, assessment methods and evaluation studies of materials for oil sands applications have traditionally focused on low and high stress abrasion and slurry erosion resistance mechanisms, because they were considered to be the predominant wear modes prevailing in oil sands mining, transportation and bitumen recovery. More recently with the very successful introduction of oil sands hydraulic transportation systems, there has been increasing use of crusher systems in which materials of construction are also required to have good toughness and gouging abrasion properties to withstand impact and the severe indentation and ploughing forces that are involved. To assess material property requirements for mitigating this additional wear mechanism, jaw crusher gouging abrasion tests using a modified ASTM G81 procedure, have been carried out on a range of wear materials of interest for oil sands mining service. The method involves a comparison of the wear losses that occur for reference and selected test plates when a controlled amount of standard feed rock is comminuted in a laboratory jaw crusher. Among the classes of material evaluated have been Q&T plate steels, austenitic manganese steel, chromium and chromium molybdenum white irons as plain castings and in laminated forms and also chromium carbide and tungsten carbide overlaid wear plates.

Strong demand for copper in developing nations such as China and India, plus the additional demand for industrial minerals to supply the Arizona construction market, brought about a record-setting year for the state?s mining industry. The value of Arizona?s copper production set a new high of $5.5 billion and pushed the total value of mineral production to $7.58 billion. This was also a record. As it has for many years, Arizona ranked first in nonfuel mineral production in the U.S. In addition to leading the nation in copper, Arizona ranked in the top five in molybdenum, sand and gravel, gemstones, perlite, silver, zeolites and pumice. Generally strong and rising prices, especially toward year?s end, fostered a bullish atmosphere that encouraged significant levels of acquisition and exploration. This activity has spread beyond the normal commodities to include some, such as manganese and fluorspar, that have not been mined in Arizona for decades.

MANY investigations of the rate of the sulfur transfer reaction between carbon-saturated iron and blast furnace type slags have been made." It is evident that the reaction is complex, the rate being affected by the presence of elements dissolved in the metal that are readily oxidized and therefore capable of existing in the slag phase. Thus Goldman, Derge, and Philbrook- have shown that carbon, silicon, manganese, and aluminum, in order of increasing effectiveness, accelerate sulfur transfer from iron containing these elements to blast furnace type slags. Quantitative information is still, however, not available on the relation between what have been termed side reactions, such as silicon transfer and CO evolution, and the sulfur transfer reaction itself. In other words, the stoichiometry of the reaction has not been investigated. In the present investigation, the transfer of all reacting elements and the evolution of CO have been measured simultaneously in order to establish the mechanism of the reaction which occurs in practice. Information of this nature cannot be deduced from equilibrium studies. It should be pointed out that in kinetic studies of this type quantitative conclusions are applicable only to the system studied. This restriction should be borne in mind when attempts are made to compare results from different investigations. Apparatus The apparatus used enables slag and metal samples to be taken at frequent intervals and also provides a continuous record of the amount of gas evolved. A sketch of the apparatus is given in Fig. 1. It may be considered in three sections: 1) furnace section, 2) blank volume section, and 3) pressure measuring section. "The raw ores which are processed in mineral processing plants exhibit very strong variations of their physical and chemical properties. As a consequence, the performances of the comminution and separation processes vary greatly from time to time. Model-based control strategies improve the performance of the plant; however, they require some form of adaptation to cope with the variations of the are properties.This paper deals with the use of adaptive techniques for the control of mineral processes. It begins with a survey on adaptive control algorithms including parameters estimation aspects. Then several examples dealing with crushing, rod, ball, autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding, flotation , drying and calcination processes are reviewed.IntroductionThe operation of the various processes of mineral processing plants (crushing, grinding, flotation, dewatering, etc.) is generally controlled using empirically tuned regulators of constant structure, such as PID controllers. To improve the operation performance, mineral processors try to implement specifically designed controllers, i.e. controllers based on plant dynamic models. Most of the time, these techniques improve the control of the mineral processing installations. However, modelling is a complex procedure because of the problems of measurement and data management, specific to this industry, and because of the variations of the model parameters. In this context model-based control strategies do not always bring the expected improvements or are sometimes discarded and replaced by more conventional techniques .The sources of variation of the dynamic behaviour of mineral processing systems can be classified into three categories: (I) the inherent changes of the raw ore properties (composition, grindability, mineralogical texture, etc.); (2) the process tuning modifications (grinding media loads, number of hydrocyclones, slurry level in flotation cells, agitation speeds, etc.); (3) the feedrate variation of the ore, water, chemical reagents, etc. All these factors change the fundamental properties of the process dynamics such as the grinding or flotation rates and the residence time in the equipment. The simplified linear models which are used to describe the process dynamics are not able to track the complex behaviour of the mineral processing systems when the amplitude of the sources of variation are too large. The mismatch between the model and the plant behaviour is then frequently a cause of model-based controller failures."

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Mining Engineering) degreeSynopsisLiqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) has been experiencing problems with boulders after blasting where the fragment sizes exceed the maximum of 800 mm as per mine standard. As a result, the mine has employed various methods to improve the fragmentation. The goal is to produce a run-of-mine (ROM) feed that does not choke the crusher and cause delays in production. In order to achieve this goal, fragmentation distribution within the fines and coarse envelope must be optimized through effective planning of blasting activities and accurate execution.The mine determined the fines-coarse envelope within which the entire crushing system can handle fragments using Split Desktop software. It is expected that both the predicted and actual fragmentation curves lie within that envelope for optimal fragmentation. The Kuz-Ram model with blast design parameters of 2.6 m for burden, 2.8 m for spacing, and 127 mm hole diameter was used to predict the fragmentation. The results show that the blast design parameters may need altering to achieve optimum fragmentation. Furthermore, the execution of the drilling and blasting may be the cause of the fragmentation problems. The mean fragmentation size (X50) differs greatly, unlike the uniformity index (n)s values which are relatively close to each other (0.6 to 2.2). The mean squared error (MSE) values have a large range. A proposed solution is a modified burden, spacing, and hole diameter. It is concluded that blast design parameters need to be reviewed in order to obtain correct predictions. Correct fragmentation as set by the plant design is important as it reduces the time lost due to secondary blasting and/or loading difficulties. In this paper we analyse blast results at Liqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) in Lesotho for a period of six months.
