Nos lagos ornamentais geralmente tem-se a dificuldade em controlar o crescimento de algas, pois existe a incidência de luz e a disponibilidade de nutrientes provenientes da ração fornecida aos peixes, os quais propiciam o crescimento e o desenvolvimento das algas. Uma alternativa de tratamento é o processo oxidativo avançado (POA) existente, a ozonização, com o objetivo de propor um processo de tratamento de água para controlar a proliferação de algas em um lago ornamental sem prejuízos à comunidade aquática, vivente no lago. A metodologia utilizada foi o estudo de caso do lago que envolveu as seguintes etapas: construção do lago ornamental; definição do sistema de tratamento; monitoramento de parâmetros como: a demanda bioquímica de oxigênio (DBO), a cor, o pH, a temperatura, a amônia (NH3) e o oxigênio dissolvido (OD) do lago durante três meses; aplicação do ozônio para controlar a proliferação de algas e monitoramento dos mesmos parâmetros durante o processo de ozonização. Dentre os principais resultados encontrados citam-se: a redução de 170 unidades de Cobalto platina (PCU) da cor esverdeada da água do lago; descimento de 60% da DBO; aumento de 16% da concentração de OD e a redução de 80 a 100% da concentração de NH3, eliminando assim odores desagradáveis e melhorando a qualidade da água. Por meio dos resultados obtidos conclui-se a aplicação de ozônio em lagos ornamentais é uma alternativa para a manutenção aquática e melhoria da qualidade da água..

Scientifically known as sepiolite, it is represented by the formula Si12Mg8O30(OH)4(H2O)4(8H2O). Sepiolite is a natural clay mineral composed of hydrous magnesium silicate, characterized by a structure of alternating blocks and tunnels that develop in the direction of the fiber. Each structural block contains two silica tetrahedral sheets surrounding a central layer of magnesium oxide- hydroxide. Sepiolite exists in two distinct forms in nature: alpha-sepiolite and beta-sepiolite. Alpha- sepiolite is amorphous, compact, and resembles pellets that look like sea froth, hence its Turkish name Luletasi. In contrast, beta-sepiolite appears as amorphous aggregates or small, flat, round particles. These two forms exhibit different physical properties. Meerschaum was also studied by Brauner and Preisinger in 1958, who agreed that it primarily consists of sepiolite (2MgO·3SiO2·nH2O). According to these researchers, water is present in its mineral, zeolitic, crystal, and structural forms. Meerschaum is commonly used for adsorbing various liquids, as an ion exchanger, and for dispersing and insulating paraffin in the chemical industry (Gokdemir and Dogan, 2011). Sepiolite deposits of the meerschaum type are primarily found in Turkey, Somalia, Tanzania, Kenya, and Mexico. Alongside high-quality, low-density, and highly porous meerschaum, Somalia also has sedimentary sepiolite formations. The total reserves of these deposits are estimated at around 50–100 million tons (Sariiz and Isik, 1995). Meerschaum, also known as “white gold” or “sepiolite,” is a unique mineral highly prized for its lightness, heat- resistant properties, and ability to be carved into intricate designs. Found predominantly in Eskisehir, Turkiye, meerschaum mining and processing have become significant contributors to the local economy and cultural heritage. This paper explores the history, economic importance, mining practices, and environmental impacts of meerschaum mining in Eskisehir and discusses the challenges and opportunities faced by the industry.

This paper presents the latest references of the Siemens VAI slab casting technology. Following the connect & cast philosophy Siemens VAI has developed technological packages suitable for installation in existing casters of any original supplier, as well as for complete new machines. A major demand on new machines is to adapt quickly to different market demands. This requirement for flexibility can be divided into two actual trends. Firstly into casting a broad range of steel grades, thicknesses and width on the same machine and secondly having installed slab, bloom and billet caster in one steel plant to deliver all different types of needs on the market. Depending on the condition of the existing machine the focus of modernization ranges from the substitution of single components featuring state-ofthe-art technology to complete caster revamping projects. In this paper concepts and references for short machine outages and fast caster ramp-ups at moderate investment costs are presented.

The damage mechanism of ductile cast iron cooling stave applied to No.4 blast furnace of Guofeng steel was analyzed through damage investigation in details, the damage causes: hightemperature gas flow erosion, wear of burden, high-temperature ablation, carburizing damage, improper operation on blast furnace, etc. were given out both in macroscopic and microscopic views. It can be obtained from metallographic diagrams that the diameter of graphite nodules increases, the number per unit area reduces, and roundness declines, successively, from cold to hot surface, which are not conducive to stave longevity. In summary, the material for staves manufacture should be better in comprehensive mechanical properties to prolong the service life, thus making blast furnace long campaign.

While many mine tunnels are developed through ground that must be riddled with the sources of small (and larger) mining induced seismic events, recorded by the mine seismic monitoring systems, we do not see planar discontinuities classified as seismic sources in the geotechnical databases. Here we list criteria that may be useful to identify discontinuities in drill core which are dynamic slip surfaces, parts of mining induced seismic sources. Such shear rupture surfaces in core would generally be powdery, cohesionless, and rough on cm scale. Finely broken rock and rock flour may be found in the core boxes at the discontinuities. Slickensides would be soft (easily destroyed) and kinematically consistent with the local stress field. In some cases, a cross fabric would be present, orthogonal to the slickensides, being the intersections of en-echelon extension fractures, within the dynamic shear zones, with the shear zone walls.

Situated in north-west Queensland, Australia, the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) has been producing copper and gold since 1996. Owned and operated by Glencore Xstrata, ore is currently sourced from a newly developed underground sublevel cave (SLC) mine below the old EHM open pit (the pit). Ore feed to the concentrator is supplemented by satellite open pits comprising the Mount Margaret operation.The transition from open pit to a producing underground mine involved a complex extraction sequence for the first two production sublevels on RL1650 and RL1625. Underground mining during cave initiation was further complicated when south wall instability prevented completion of the final open pit shell. The transition mining phase included mass firing of an inclined crown pillar between the initial SLC void and the pit followed by a combination of transverse and longitudinal SLC mining.The inclined crown pillar mass firing was the first significant milestone in the extraction of the transition ore block. Comprising approximately 890 000 t of in situ material; 70 000 m of drilling was charged with 351 t of emulsion and 6026 electronic detonators to initiate the single mass firing. The firing contained five direction changes over 19 seconds making it one of the largest and most complex underground blasts ever conducted in Australia.Risk management was integrated into every facet of the technical and operational planning and execution of the transition mining phase, whilst maintaining daily mine construction and production commitments. The Coal Pillar Rib Rating (CPRR) technique has been developed to assist in rib support design in underground coal mines. One major challenge of the data collection process is the measurement of coal strengths in the field. Schmidt hammer has been verified as a useful tool to determine coal strength. An alternative approach is to obtain the representative strength of coal mass by determining the coal lithotypes in the field based on the coal brightness profile by experienced geologists or mining engineers. In this paper, image processing techniques have been used to quantify the texture of coal images of different lithotypes with the purpose of classifying coal lithotypes. The coal images were collected from the pillar ribs with exposed surfaces in underground coal mines, and the coal lithotypes were identified when taking the images. The method of Gray-Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM) was used to analyze the textures of coal images of different lithotypes, and the texture parameters, such as contrast, homogeneity, energy, and entropy, were compared. The results show that the images of coal with different lithotypes have different textures, which can be quantified through the image processing. The results from this study demonstrate the potential of classifying coal lithotypes using rib photos and easing the data collection process of CPRR.

Nowadays along with population growth, industry development, consumption of mineral resources and the fact that the reserves on hand are running out, the depth of surface and underground mines for further exploitation are increasing. During recent years, in underground mining, the block caving method for low-grade and large-scale deposits has shown a growing rate of application. This method is very cost effective and economically affordable. The dimensions of blocks are one of the most important parameters which should be taken into account since it has been proved to have a great deal of effect on technical issues such as commencement of caving and mine design. Proper calculation of the length and width for a block in this method leads to proper caving and discharging which are the most important stages. Therefore, in this method, the calculation of the optimized dimensions (length and width) of blocks is not only important but also directly helps the productivity of extraction. In this study, firstly for the purpose of facilitation, some assumptions were considered and having used these assumptions for estimation of optimized length and width of block, a relationship based on rock mechanics and physics was explored. Furthermore, some necessary details were added to the said relationship and finally, it was transformed into an inequality. Solving this inequality provides us with the optimized length and width of the block. The explored relationship was analyzed with MATLAB software and the graphs thereof were drawn. In these graphs, each time one of the input parameters has been drawn up in a logical range so that it could be compared with previous states.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Mabilo copper-gold-magnetite skarn deposit is located in southern Luzon in the Paracale mineral district, where iron has been produced historically from several skarn deposits. Mabilo occurs in the south-west of the district and is distinct and significant because of its high grades of copper and gold compared to historical mines.The Mabilo licence surrounds the Venida prospect, where past small-scale mining has exploited iron, copper and gold mineralisation in oxidised skarn. A ground magnetic survey in 2007 defined a number of strong anomalies under Quaternary volcanic cover south of Venida. The property was acquired by Sierra Mining Ltd in 2011, the magnetic data were remodelled and drilling commenced in September 2012. Diamond drill hole MDH001 targeted the strongest anomaly, which was 500 m south of Venida and under 20 m of volcanic cover. It intersected 94 m with an average grade of 2.2 per cent copper, 1.6 g/t gold and 36.6 per cent iron. Subsequent drilling was targeted by magnetic modelling, incorporating magnetic susceptibility data from drill core, which resulted in a high percentage of successful drill holes.The mineralised skarn preferentially replaces a dipping limestone unit within an Eocene sequence dominated by volcanic siltstone and sandstone, metamorphosed to marble and hornfels in the aureole of a Miocene quartz-diorite intrusion. Skarn occurs discontinuously along the eastern and southern diorite contact, controlled by primary sedimentary facies variation, structural geometry, fault offsets and intrusive contacts.Coarse magnetite skarn with garnet and minor wollastonite and clinopyroxene contains variably abundant chalcopyrite and minor molybdenite. Magnetite skarn occurs in sharp contact with unaltered marble or grades into garnet skarn with minor chalcopyrite. Structurally controlled retrograde skarn alteration is strong to intense and is characterised by bornite, clinozoisite, iron carbonate and chlorite. The retrograde skarn is weakly overprinted by late-stage pyrite veining and brecciation associated with clay-silica alteration with arsenopyrite and tetrahedrite-tennantite.The quartz-diorite stock is interpreted as the source of the prograde skarn-forming and mineralising fluids. Late-stage porphyritic intrusions in the contact zone indicate continuing magmatism during uplift, when telescoping led to a high-level, high-sulfidation overprint. As the search for new ore bodies drives mines to be developed at greater depths, the associated high stress environments present challenges for rock support design. Excavations in highly stressed brittle rock are often subject to large volume increases due to rock failure, a phenomenon known as rock mass bulking, which can result in significant wall convergence. Support systems need to be designed to minimize the amount of bulking and to accommodate large wall convergences. In order to design such a support system, empirical guidelines are often used to predict the amount of bulking. However, the empirical guidelines that are currently available are based on a limited number of case studies and consider few input parameters, which may result in an inaccurate bulking assessment. This paper describes methods of collecting quantitative field data at Creighton mine in Canada to better understand rock mass bulking and to further develop the empirical guidelines for bulking assessment for tunnels in highly stressed grounds. "Alkali precipitation of dissolved metals is an inexpensive but non-selective means of treating mine wastewater. Alternatively, sulphide precipitation can treat to below parts-per-million concentrations while selectively recovering valuable metals. While technically feasible, sulphide treatment of dilute waste streams increases the size and cost of the plant relative to the metals loading. Ion exchange has been applied at two separate sites to pre-concentrate nickel containing wastewater prior to recovery in smaller and more cost effective sulphide precipitation circuits. The result is a dual-circuit system that can maintain high selectivity and reduce overall facility cost while meeting strict effluent regulations.INTRODUCTIONAlkali precipitation using lime is the most common method of treating mining effluents for dissolved metals removal. This method is generally sufficient for waste streams containing mixed metals of little value, and for meeting modest metal concentration limits in the final effluent. Due to the non-selective nature of the lime process, the produced metal hydroxide sludge is of little value. All metals are removed together in a sludge product which cannot be re-processed for further value recovery.By contrast, sulphide precipitation can be used to selectively remove and recover valuable base metals (such as copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt), since the sulphide will preferentially target these metals without reacting with less valuable metals (such as iron and aluminum). The low solubility of the metal sulphide solids also supports the removal of base metals to lower concentrations than can be achieved with alkali precipitation in addition to other benefits discussed more fully in a prior paper (Bratty, Lawrence, Kratochvil & Marchant, 2006). The corollary to this solubility feature is that sulphide precipitation can function on influent streams containing low (< 10 mg/L) metals concentrations to meet very low parts-perbillion final effluent concentrations. Reagent overdosing is also minimized when compared to alkali precipitation."

The implementation of presplit blasting has been widely utilized in open pit and underground tunneling. This case study works through the iterative process of developing a heading drill and blast design to control overbreak and limit backbreak in cut and fill headings. The initial design was based on rule of thumb parameters, and the design was then modified for the field conditions based on results. Throughout the design process the drill profile, explosive charge, and timing were modified to yield the best profile compared to design. Data collection during the design process was extensive to best understand the effect of modifying parameters, and gauge performance of design changes. Input from the miners as well as engineers was considered to allow for the best possible adaptation of the design change from existing practices. During the process resistance to change was realized and accounted for to understand the issues that the miners were facing and how to best address them while ensuring high quality blasting. Workforce buy- in was addressed by illustrating the long term benefits of higher quality blasting and the tradeoff of with a slightly more in depth drill and loading cycle.

A foundation value engineering redesign is a collaboration between the project owner, original design team, general contractor, foundation contractor and redesign team. Without the acceptance and collaborative effort of all the stakeholders, the redesign process is doomed to failure. For the addition at the Hackensack (New Jersey) University Medical Center (HUMC) we had just such a collaborative effort for the drilled shaft redesign. For a successful redesign effort, the collaboration between the foundation contractor and their redesign team needs to fully exploit the contractor’s specific equipment and experience and convey how to apply this to the project as a whole to ensure everyone is confident that the project design goals are being met. For the HUMC project, applied load testing of the drilled shafts (bi-directional and lateral) were used to provide ultimate geotechnical design values for the redesign effort. By utilizing the contractor’s preferred equipment and the redesign team’s testing and application expertise, the redesign collaboration was able to enhance a good design and make it into a great project.

A tecnologia de injeção de carvão pulverizado (ICP) nas ventaneiras dos altos-fornos é consolidada mundialmente para diminuir o consumo de coque para a produção de ferrogusa. Atualmente, existem mais de 400 altos-fornos que praticam esta técnica, sendo que em mais de 70% de todos os altos-fornos no mundo já se usa algum tipo de injeção de materiais sólidos. A injeção de carvão pulverizado permite utilizar misturas de carvões com diferentes características, possibilitando reduções no custo de produção do ferro-gusa. Um carvão para injeção precisa queimar rapidamente para minimizar a formação de carvão não queimado, material que prejudica a permeabilidade do altoforno (AF). Devido à necessidade contínua que as siderúrgicas têm de reduzir os custos de produção, o reaproveitamento de resíduos industriais é uma tendência crescente no segmento. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho avaliou a combustibilidade dos finos de coque provenientes do despoeiramento do beneficiamento de coque da Gerdau Ouro Branco, visando à injeção em AF. O material possuía granulometria abaixo de 90µm, usualmente praticada em ICP. Os ensaios de combustibilidade foram realizados com o material em proporção única e, em misturas de diferentes proporções mássicas com carvões minerais. A combustibilidade dos carvões e dos finos de coque foi avaliada e mostrou que os finos de coque provenientes do despoeiramento do beneficiamento de coque possuem boa combustibilidade e podem ser injetados em alto-forno

Operators are often challenged with the management of water throughout the life cycle of a mine. High water levels can lead to physical or chemical instability of water-retaining structures. Operators need to predict changes in water levels to make timely operational decisions and plan for contingencies, particularly in remote legacy mines. A closed mine in northern Canada with no permanent on-site personnel had a simple water balance model that was effective for decades to inform annual water treatment operations. In recent years challenging water quality and more stringent effluent quality criteria has strained those treatment operations and led to more water being stored. Additionally, the region has experienced more precipitation and higher water levels, which have triggered emergency response activities. A calibrated probabilistic model was used to provide enhanced prediction capabilities and to identify key sensitivities in the water balance for monitoring. A several-year case study shows the value that this modelling tool provided for mobilizing personnel and performing response actions, particularly the inclusion of probability paired with forecasted pond water levels. Annual drawdown targets were subsequently established which provided more certainty in scheduling of annual treatment operations

O presente trabalho possibilita o entendimento e a análise dos processos de conformação a quente dos metais. Isto, pela validação experimental do modelo de Johnson-Cook, para descrever o comportamento dos materiais no regime plástico, para grandes deformações, às altas taxas de deformações e nas altas temperaturas. Um entendimento dos parâmetros do modelo, utilizando-se um método analítico numérico simples, rápido e confiável foi desenvolvido anteriormente pela linha de pesquisa em Conformação Plástica dos Metais na UNESP – Campus de Ilha Solteira, obtendo-se as constantes empíricas do modelo referido. É proposto nesse trabalho a validação experimental do método simplificado para determinação dos parâmetros empíricos do modelo de Johnson-Cook através de um ensaio de tração a quente, considerando as propriedades mecânicas dos materiais analisados experimentalmente e/ou de dados de materiais disponíveis na literatura. De maneira geral, os resultados experimentais foram satisfatórios para o aço AISI 1045 à temperatura de 500 ºC, ensaiado à taxa de deformação de 1000 s-1, quando comparados aos resultados teóricos previstos pelo modelo proposto por SCADUTO e MENEZES. Particularmente, foi possível evidenciar erros máximos de 1,33% para o parâmetro n, 13,15% para o parâmetro B, 295,00% para o parâmetro C e 4,14% para o parâmetro m.
