Durante o processo para colocar um poço petrolífero em funcionamento existem algumas etapas a serem seguidas. Várias fases devem ser cumpridas para que o óleo bruto armazenado seja extraído. Dentre essas, duas são muito importantes: a perfuração, que é a fase de construção do poço em si, e logo após essa à de completação, a qual tem como objetivo deixar o poço em condições de produção. Os fluidos de completação extremamente salinos foram preparados empregando os seguintes sais: cloreto de sódio (NaCl), cloreto de potássio (KCl) e Cloreto de cálcio (CaCl2) nas concentrações de 50, 100 e 150 lb/bbl. O tipo do sal desencadeia uma seria de efeitos relacionados a taxa corrosiva e morfologia do ataque corrosivo, onde o diagrama de Pareto foram considerados estatisticamente significante ao nível de 95% de confiança com significância quadrática (Q) dos parâmetros e das interações entre os mesmos. Observou-se que os mínimos e máximos valores da taxa de corrosão ocorrem quando os fluidos de completação foram confeccionados com NaCl e CaCl2.

Os solos de capeamento de minas de minério de ferro, calcário, gnaisse, granito, entre outros, possuem um característica em comum, são solos lateríticos gerados a partir das intempéries e alteração das rochas citadas. Este fato proporciona a formação dos minerais caulinita, goethita, ilita, etc. na composição mineralógica desses estéreis. Em função de suas características químicas e mineralógicas esses estéreis argilosos podem ser utilizados como matéria-prima para produção de ligantes de alta resistência e de múltiplas aplicações. Nesse trabalho é apresentada a tecnologia flash para calcinação de solos de capeamento de minas para produção desses ligantes (PI 0604142-6A). Essa tecnologia permite processamento termoquímico de material pulverulento, ou seja partículas finas, o que não é possível em fornos convencionais de calcinação. No reator flash as partículas de estéreis argilosos são expostas a temperaturas moderadas durante frações de segundo, provocando o fenômeno de desidroxilação dos minerais hidratados contribuindo para a formação de metacaulinita, metagoethita, metailita, etc. Em função das condições cinéticas e termodinâmicas reinantes no processo os constituintes mineralógicos produzidos são amorfos e possuem uma alta superfície de reação, permitindo alcançar valores típicos de área superficial do ligante acima de 90 m2/grama. Os ligantes produzidos a partir desses estéreis apresentam aplicações em diversas áreas tais como indústria cimenteira, construção civil, pavimentação e metalurgia.

A exigência atual de novos materiais com alta resistência mecânica levou a um aumento da pesquisa abordando os aços de alta dureza e baixa liga. Estes aços possuem características que os qualificam para uma elevada gama de aplicações, dentre as quais destaca-se o uso em blindagem balística. O estudo das falhas decorrentes à altas taxas de deformação apontam como principal causa o surgimento das bandas de cisalhamento adiabático. Este trabalho visa caracterizar a microestrutura de um aço de alta dureza e baixa liga, após a realização de um ensaio balístico com um projétil 7.62x51 mm perfurante (Pf). A análise superficial do material foi realizada por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), onde pode-se observar a ocorrência de uma fratura após a formação da banda de cisalhamento adiabático (adiabatic shear band).

Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de se investigar o comportamento do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32304 em meios contendo íons cloreto. Para tanto, foram realizados ensaios CST com carga e deformação constantes usando meios com concentrações distintas de cloreto de magnésio (MgCl2), em ebulição. Foram realizados também análises química, metalográfica e eletroquímica do material. Após os ensaios de CST, foi constatada a suscetibilidade à CST deste material, além da influência da concentração de íons cloreto na solução. Essa constatação foi reforçada após a análise microfractográfica dos corpos de prova ensaiados. A análise eletroquímica do material revelou a evolução de pites em potencial de, aproximadamente, 400mVECS.

Most modern buildings involve the construction of a basement, often of several levels, to maximize the floor area ratio. The basement walls are generally designed for excavation retention purposes only, and are infrequently considered as elements which can help to support the structural loads from the superstructure. However, the basement walls can provide substantial stiffness and resistance to structural loads, and may contribute to the overall foundation capacity and stiffness. This paper presents a simplified approach to approximate the overall foundation capacity and stiffness considering the various components of the foundation system, including the foundation piles, the basement floor slab, the basement walls and interaction between each foundation component. The effect of the basement walls in enhancing the foundation stiffness values is examined by reference to the results of finite element analyses which consider a foundation subjected to vertical, horizontal and moment loadings. The approximate approach is found to give results that are adequate for a preliminary assessment of the effects of basement walls on the overall foundation response, without the need for detailed three-dimensional finite element analyses.

Iron ore tailings typically containing 40 to 50 per cent Fe can be beneficiated to iron ore products containing 54 to 60 per cent Fe. The impurities are comprised of clay, quartz, cristabolite and TiO2. Goethite and hematite are also present. At high concentrations of 55–60 wt% solids, the tailings displayed high yield stress and viscosity and cannot be pumped over long distances. Composite additives comprising of NaOH, phosphate-based additives and sodium metasilicate are found to reduce the viscosity and yield stress very significantly by a few orders of magnitude. The yield stress of 100 Pa can be reduced to almost zero. At this state, dilution of the tailings with its process water to 40 per cent solids causes the coarse and high-density iron ore particles to separate from the colloidal fractions located in the supernatant after a few minutes of sedimentation. Separation by decantation produces a sediment with an Fe content of 54 per cent from tailings with 47 per cent Fe. Another tailings sample with 48 per cent Fe was beneficiated to greater than 57 per cent Fe using NaOH-metasilicate-polyphosphate additives and employing an additional washing step. The use of other composite additives, NaOH and polyphosphates, increased beneficiated product Fe content to greater than 60 per cent from the same tailings. With the current iron ore spot price of more than US$180 per tonne, the cost of this treatment process even including a desalination step, if necessary, is relatively insignificant. This study has given tailings an economic value that should be exploited as soon as possible.

No processo de lingotamento contínuo, o contato do aço líquido com o molde refrigerado a água, forma uma pele solidificada. O rompimento desta pele, conhecido como breakout, deve ser evitado uma vez que traz sérios prejuízos ao processo. Utiliza-se um sistema de detecção de breakouts, responsável por gerar alarmes em situações propícias ao rompimento de pele, a velocidade de lingotamento é então reduzida na busca de evitá-lo. A ocorrência de breakouts está ligado principalmente a falta de lubrificação, obrigação essa que é atribuída ao pó fluxante. Portanto, as propriedades do pó fluxante que possuem relação com essa função podem ser alteradas, na busca de diminuir a tendência à ocorrência de breakouts e alarmes de colamento. Neste trabalho, foi alterada a temperatura de break point do pó fluxante de aços peritéticos buscando a redução do número de alarmes. A diminuição dessa temperatura reduziu o número de alarmes, sem afetar os índices de trincas longitudinais em placas, o que gerou redução nas perdas por sucateamento e aumento da produtividade do processo.

O presente trabalho aborda um estudo de caso sobre o controle da temperatura dentro do forno de tratamento térmico bem como o comportamento da temperatura da água na piscina durante o resfriamento do material.

Willemite is typically found in oxidized zinc ores and metallurgical secondary resources but without effective extraction method yet. Based on the ideas of zinc phase reconstruction in the willemite, the extraction of zinc from willemite by calcified-roasting using CaO as additive and ammonia-leaching process was studied in this paper. The influences of CaO dosage, roasting temperature, roasting time on the phase transformation and zinc leaching rate were studied, which were characterized by XRD. The results indicated that Zn2SiO4 was transformed into ZnO or Zn2CaSi2O7 .After roasted with 1.4 times of theoretical CaO dosage at l280 for 40 minutes, willemite was thoroughly transformed into ZnO. The zinc leaching rate of the roasted sample was 97.45% in NH4Cl-NH3 H2O leaching system, which increased by 91.40 % compared with zinc leaching rate of 6.05% when willemite was directly leached in NH4Cl-NH3 H2O system.

The UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? freeze lining concept combines wall cooling with carbon and graphite refractories of higher thermal conductivities to ?chill? the refractory lining by transferring heat from the refractory lining. Effective sidewall water cooling, together with the efficiency of the heat dissipating conductive refractories, lowers the temperature of the lining to below that of the molten process materials. This causes a layer of slag and process metal to solidify or ?freeze? and form a protective ?skull? which completely coats the refractory hot face. Once formed, the slag skull insulates the refractories, reducing heat loss and protect the lining from erosion, chemical attack, thermal shock, and other stresses. The result: extended life and greatly improved refractory performance. The Ilmenite smelting process depends on the presence of a solidified slag skull to protect sidewall refractory material from chemical attach by molten slag. No known refractory material is able to withstand this corrosive material. To date, UCAR has not applied their Chill Kote ? technology in the ilmenite smelting industry. This paper revolves around the results obtained from conducting an ilmenite smelting campaign on a 500kW DC open-arc furnace with a UCAR designed refractory system. The purpose of this test was to establish the effects such a lining has on refractory wear and the reduction-smelting process. Proper thermo-couple management enabled the authors to monitor lining wear for the duration of the campaign. Prior to the pilot-scale campaign, modeling work was completed to evaluate the feasibility of applying UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? technology to ilmenite smelting furnaces. The successful operation of a pilot-scale furnace equipped with the UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? lining as well as concise modeling suggest that it should be a viable option to consider for an industrial-scale furnace.

To overcome the shortcomings of traditional cyanidation process for refractory gold ores, the smelting processes have been proposed. These smelting processes could be divided into two kinds, namely, indirect smelting and direct smelting. In the indirect smelting process, the calcine of refractory gold ores are added in the copper or lead smelting processes during which gold can be enriched into copper matte or crude lead. Then gold is extracted from the anode slimes. In the direct smelting process, refractory gold ores are smelted directly with gold enriched into ferrous matte. Then gold is extracted from ferrous matte. Based on the direct smelting process, the metallurgy-beneficiation united process for refractory gold ores has been proposed. In this process, gold is firstly enriched into ferrous matte by direct smelting, then the grinding-flotation process is used to obtain gold-rich sulfurous iron ore, and finally gold is extracted via hydrometallurgical method.The metallurgy-beneficiation united process has advantages of high gold recovery ratio, environment-friendly and low cost, which provides a new idea for the extraction of gold from refractory gold ores.

The microstructure and mechanical strength variations of chromite pellets preheated and roasted in air were studied systematically. The results show that the chromite (Fe,Mg)(Cr,Fe,Al)2O4 is oxidized to magnesium-rich (Mg,Fe)(Cr,Fe, Al)2O4 and ferrochromium complex oxide (Cr,Fe,Al)2O3 in the preheating process over 500 °C. When the temperature is higher than 1000 °C, the new phase (Cr,Fe, Al)2O3 is formed, which is mainly distributed in the outer layer of a single chromite particle. Inner the particles there are acicular (Cr,Fe,Al)2O3 and unoxidized (Fe,Mg) (Cr,Fe,Al)2O4, which forming an interwoven structure together. The oxidation rates of pellets can reach to superior limits in 20 min. With the temperature increasing from 950 to 1300 °C, the mechanical strength and oxidized rates increase to varying degrees correspondingly.

The employment of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is the default delivery method for the realisation of traffic, utility and primary resource underground space worldwide, with hundreds of kilometres completed safely each year. This is not yet the case for the mining sector in Australia, specifically underground coal mining. The safety advantages of TBM delivery when compared to New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) delivery, or that of drill and blast, remains unrealised.With coal access drifts ranging between 1000?m and 3000?m in length, the construction of these facilities using TBMs could be done in a fraction of the time when compared to current practice. TBM world records currently stand at 435?m/week or 1600?m/month for the 7.0?m to 10.0?m range. Resource owners and developers should embrace the opportunity to deliver access to their orebodies in only a few months, excluding machine assembly and disassembly time.There are challenges in utilising TBMs for construction of Coal access drifts, such as; TBMs generally being bespoke design, maximising capital efficiency for drift development, and geotechnical variances between projects. This paper explores safer and more cost-effective options. This paper also provides detail of how the configuration within a completed drift could be optimised to ensure all site specific needs are met with regard to future use of the drift. The paper also includes descriptions of the engineering solutions that are available for physical and atmospheric challenges specific to coal drift applications and how the TBM manufactures are adapting to the regulatory requirements are also covered.Due to downward pressure on high cost bases and ever increasing safety requirements the popularity of TBMs in the Australian mining sector can be expected to increase and eventually become the default delivery method for coal drift construction, building them cheaper, faster and?safer.CITATION:Sibthorpe, D, 2014. Ground freezing has been used for the sinking of deep mine shafts for more than 140 years. While advances in refrigeration technology have refined the overall freezing operation, the basic ground freezing concept remains the same. This paper presents an overview of the ground freezing process and the unique advantages that ground freezing brings to shaft construction. Design and construction considerations, including instrumentation and monitoring, are discussed. Case studies are presented to illustrate ground freezing applications for mine shaft installation.

The importance of cobalt-rich manganese crusts on the Pacific seamounts for possible future rare metal sources has been recognized these 30 years. The thin layer-type coverage and the micro-topographic undulation of basement affect not only the excavation efficiency but also the economy of mining venture. Because of these distribution characteristics, no economic feasibility has been recognized through the past economic analyses. On the basis of a recent geological study about seamount rocks, a possibility of by-product substrate recovery for phosphorous supply with cobalt-rich manganese crust mining has been highlighted. In the mining model, the substrate rocks are utilized as phosphates for agricultural and chemical usages. Under some preliminary technical and economic assumptions, the possibility of cobalt-rich manganese crust mining venture is examined. The results show a better economy of the venture including the substrate rock usage for phosphorous supply. Introduction Cobalt-rich Manganese Crusts and the Economic Feasibility Cobalt-rich manganese crusts on the Pacific seamounts received attention as potential sources for strategic metals such as Co, Ni, Cu, and Mn, due to their vast distribution and higher cobalt concentration than manganese nodules (Cronan, 1980; Halbach, 1982; Manheim, 1986). In the earlier stage, the geological distribution characteristics were reported (Cronan, 1984; Clark et al., 1984; Misawa et al., 1987; Pichocki and Hoffert, 1987) and a systematic feasibility of the mining was studied (Hawaii DPED, 1987).

"BHP Billiton (BHPB) West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy (geomet) program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara. The geomet program provides accurate information to infrastructure engineers, resource geologists, mine planning engineers and the technical marketing team on the performance characteristics of iron ores. Performance metrics include production planning, such as lump/fine splits, processing capability such as the level of ultra-fine iron ore and ironmaking blast furnace properties including tumble index (TI) and reduction disintegration index (RDI). Prior to the introduction of the current geomet program in WAIO, basic geometallurgical information was provided at the deposit level, such as deposit lump percentage and head grade chemistry. As the business value of geometallurgy was realised during the growth period of WAIO, the geomet process was reviewed and formalised into five steps: geomet drill planning laboratory measurement data management algorithm development block estimation.The geomet laboratory process produces simulated iron ore products from drill core, which are then subjected to physical geometallurgy test work. With the large amount of geometallurgy data collected, extensive databases are utilised to collate and organise the data to improve its usability within the business. Algorithms are created from the data to predict important geomet variables and a block estimation method is used to estimate geometallurgical properties into resource models. The predicted geometallurgy data is regularly reviewed at the different steps against plant and shipping data to allow refinement of the geometallurgy algorithms. It is also recognised that geomet data can be used to optimise the operations in existing processing hubs for improved production rate. In addition, future geomet programs will focus on generating data from all available drill core programs, not just dedicated geomet drill holes, and will incorporate new types of data, such as hyper-spectral information, for improved geometallurgical estimation.CITATION:Wright, B, Carroll, T, Flanagan, M, Sua, T and Van Dijken, B, 2013. Common carbon dioxide capturing reagents, such as amines and sodium hydroxide, are expensive, toxic, and energy intensive to regenerate. We have added frothers to a sodium carbonate solution in order to increase the surface area available for CO2 transport within the packed bed of a counter current scrubbing column. Addition of frothers has improved the performance of sodium carbonate scrubbing solutions to be on par with sodium hydroxide scrubbing solutions. This novel enhancement of a relatively inexpensive CO2 capture-regeneration cycle shows potential to allow plants to turn a profit by sequestering a waste product. These results are discussed in detail in the following manuscript. INTRODUCTION The combustion of fossil fuels converts chemical energy to thermal energy. CO2 is produced as a byproduct of the reaction. 80% of the world’s electricity is produced by using this thermal energy to power a generator, accounting for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In an effort to stabilize the rising atmospheric CO2 levels, researchers are investigating the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems in power plants. [1] Efforts to capture CO2 at some power plants have been successful, but the cost of installing and operating the required equipment is high. As such, very few power plants have CCS systems. If CO2 can be captured and processed into a product that can be sold at a profit, installing CCS systems in power plants will be a very attractive business decision. In order for the sale of captured CO2 to become a profitable venture, the cost of capturing the CO2 from a flue gas must be reduced. BACKGROUND The most common method for separating CO2 from a flue gas is by passing it through a counter-current packed bed scrubbing column. The flue gas enters the bottom of a column while a solution of a chemical with properties advantageous to the absorption of CO2 is pumped to the top. The fluids interact in a packed bed, where the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid. CO2 is an acid gas, so it is common for the scrubbing solution to be alkaline in nature in order to neutralize the carbonic acid that is formed when it is dissolves into water. The exhaust exits the top of the column free of carbon dioxide, which exits the column in the scrubbing solution, reacting or complexing with the absorbent. Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a CO2 scrubbing column. It shows the molar flowrates and compositions of the gas and liquid at the bottom [1], the top [2], and an arbitrary height in the column [Z]. [2,15] L is the molar flowrate of liquid at any point in in the column. G is the molar flowrate of gas at any point in the column. Since the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid, L and G are variable with respect to height. To simplify calculations, the CO2 free molar flowrates Ls and Gs are often used. X is the fraction moles of aqueous CO2 per mole of CO2 free liquid. Y is the fraction moles of gaseous CO2 per mole of CO2 free gas. Figure 2 is a composition diagram of the scrubbing column depicted in figure 1.

The PT Freeport Indonesiaæs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) copper deposit is located in the province of Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Currently, a block cave mine is being developed around this deposit. Production is scheduled to start the fourth-quarter of year 2000 and to ramp up to 25 000 tpd by year 2003. The air quantity requirement for this mine is equal to 780 m3/s. To supply this quantity, the mine will require five centrifugal fans (one 450 and four 750 kW fans). This study summarises the technical aspects related to the installation and commissioning of two of these fans. The fans were installed on the surface in parallel arrangement with two others. Each has a design capacity of 240 m3/s of air at 2.2 kPa of static pressure. The study presents the installation details from the underground shaft excavation and portal development through fan testing and commissioning. It also presents the results of a monitoring system that was installed to determine the fan duties.

"Cable bolts are used frequently as a secondary support system (with steel arch support) in difficult stress-strain conditions of deep coal mines. The load transfer mechanism of cable bolts depends on several factors, such as the strength, deformation and geometric properties of the bolts, resin and the surrounding rock mass so-called cable-resin-rock system (CRR system). The bonding length and bolt/borehole diameter ratio strongly influence the final bearing capacity of the CRR system.The study presents the behaviour of CRR system during a pull-out test which is usually used in the carboniferous rock mass in the Czech part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. A series of 28 pull out tests were performed on 3-m-long cable bolts, with various combinations of borehole diameters and bonding lengths, to understand this behaviour. Boreholes were drilled into a solid rock mass consisting of fine-grained sandstone to guarantee similar conditions during the pull-out tests. Video inspection and measurement of borehole diameters were performed to determine their quality and real diameters. Three characteristics were observed from pull-out test results: ultimate pull-out load; displacement of the end of bolt and system stiffness. Numerical modelling by FEM (Finite Element Method) was used to determine the stiffness of the CRR system for variable bolt/borehole ratios and bonding lengths each under constant load. A linear elasto-plastic model and a mohr-coulomb model were used for cable and resin-rock respectively. The results of the experiment may contribute significantly to improving of the methodology of cable bolts installation as well as the design of used cable bolts."

"This paper describes the operation of a rope haulage used as the main system of transportation in an underground coal mine. Prince Colliery, which is operated by the Cape Breton Development Corporation, has been in operation for 23 years and produces 1.2 million tonnes of coal annually. The mine extends a distance of 8000 metres under the Atlantic Ocean. All personnel and supplies are transported by means of an endless rope haulage system consisting of a train of rail cars that are operated by an electric engine on surface. The wire rope is 15 km long and weighs 63 tonnes. The system is believed to be the longest of its type used in an underground coal mine. The design of the system, safety features of the haulage, and problems encountered during the design and construction are described. IntroductionCoal has been mined commercially in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia since the 1800s. Several coal seams that are part of the Sydney coal fields, dip toward the north and northeast out under the Atlantic Ocean at angles between -4 and -15 degrees. Coal has been economically mined at depth in excess of 1200 m and more than 11 km from the coastline.Traditionally, single and double drum hoists have been used to haul the coal to the surface and also for transporting the workers and the materials required for mining up to 8 km. With the introduction of mechanized mining methods in the late 1960s, conveyor belts began to replace rope hoists for coal transportation. Improvements in hoisting system design also allowed for drums that could wind up to 6100 m of 32 mm wire rope in 15 layers.These hoists are commonly referred to as “drop hoists” because they take advantage of the gradient of the slope to assist in allowing the mine car train to reach the end of travel. The cars travel on steel rails and the rope is guided by rollers to reduce friction in the system."
