The Elgas Underground Storage Facility at Port Botany, Sydney, is the first purpose-built cavern of its kind in Australia and allows large capacity, safe and environmentally benign storage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The facility provides Elgas with the flexibility to source product at competitive prices and will ensure long-term security of supply. "Eliminating the environmental threat caused by waste effluent containing magnesium sulfate derived from the process of nickel laterite sulfuric acid leaching and subsequent nickel precipitation is always a focus in the metallurgy field. A new flowsheet whose procedures include vaporization, crystallization, two stages precipitation of magnesium, causticizing treatment of filtrate and ammonia recycle was investigated. Both the details of the flowsheet and its application are described in this article. It is confirmed to be an effective and economical method to prevent the pollution by the waste effluent, simultaneity, a series of magnesium products recovered during the process own good economic returns.IntroductionSulfuric acid leaching is the conventional procedure of extraction valuable metals from ores in hydrometallurgy field. During the process of nickel laterite sulfuric acid leaching, several metals, including Ni, Co, Al Mn, Fe, Mg etc., migrate into the leachate in the form of soluble metal sulfate. After subsequent procedure of purification, precipitation of Ni and Co and neutralization, an enormous stream of waste effluent which contains a concentration of approx. 15-40g/L Mg is exhausted. Such solution containing magnesium sulfate is toxic, which causes diarrhea for both human and animals. On the other hand, large amount of sulfate acid was consumed during the process of leaching by the compound of Mg, which increases cost of a hydro nickel plant.In arid areas, the waste effluent mentioned above is treated via evaporate pond owning large acreage, which needs not only the appropriate meteorologic condition, but occupies much land. In coastal areas, it is directly discharged to the sea, which probably deteriorates ecological system of offshore strip. The most widespread method to treat with the waste effluent is neutralization by lime cream, the residues of which containing magnesium hydroxide and gypsum are transported to residues pool. Neutralization is a simple process, but it never recycles the Mg and sulfate anion into new application, meanwhile, the residues are potential threat to the environment."

Discontinuous and consecutive process was applied to probe into the Kinetics and adsorption theory for Cs+ adsorbed by Zeolites under the conditions of temperature, time and fixed-bed dynamic adsorption. It indicated that the sorption kinetics behavior of zeolite?s sorption on Cs+ is ac-cord with pseudo-secondary velocity equation, velocity constant k2=0.0005213 g?mg min-1, and equilibrium adsorptive capacity is 147.0588 mg?g-1; The equation can be expressed as: Y=0.0068X+0.0887; From the analyzing of diffusion coefficients on different temperatures and times, the coefficient of diffusion is not only related with the fabric of mineral and the character of ions but also the temperature and time; When the ambient temperature hoisted, the diffusion velocity augmented rapidly; Cs+ would get over a certain energy barrier when it enters into structure of zeo-lite; This energy is expressed by activation energy, and its value is E=131.668818 kJ?mol-1; There are two dominating adsorption mechanisms in the system of zeolite absorb Cs+: ionic interchange and surface coordinate adsorption.

Este texto presentará 03 casos de automatización (en operación y en etapas de desarrollo e implementación) con el objetivo de brindar una mejora ergonómica para operarios en el mundo minero y demostrar que es posible desarrollar aplicaciones robóticas o semi robóticas basadas en servo accionamientos y ejecutados con ingeniería nacional.

A qualidade superficial dos produtos lingotados continuamente está ligada diretamente aos estágios iniciais de solidificação do aço no molde. Nessa etapa do processo, os parâmetros e estratégias de oscilação são decisivos para a obtenção de produtos com qualidade superficial adequada. Assim, foi desenvolvido na Usiminas um sistema computadorizado para monitoramento dos parâmetros de oscilação do molde, de modo a fornecer subsídios para um melhor entendimento do processo. Este sistema monitora, em tempo real, o eixo vertical e as oscilações nos eixos horizontal e transversal, mesmo com baixas amplitudes. O sistema desenvolvido possibilita a obtenção dos dados com alta precisão, de forma totalmente automática e a realização de pós-tratamento de forma a se obterem valores relativos ao processo de lingotamento e funcionamento do molde.

"The key technologies of a large rectangular pipe jacking machine with dimensions of 10.12m × 7.27m (width x height) include selection of rectangular cross-section cutting modes, analysis on the strength and stiffness of the rectangular shield, integrated control of electro-hydraulic proportional thrust systems and ground conditioning for excavation are presented in detail in this paper. These key technologies have been successfully applied and verified on site during tunneling, providing a new concept for the building of large rectangular traffic and pedestrian tunnels in urban areas for the future.1 INTRODUCTIONIn the past, underground tunnels were mainly used for drainage, sewage, utilities, metro tunnel, etc. and most of them had circular cross-sections. Recently, as a result of economic development, gradually accelerating urbanization process and diminishing ground space, underground tunnels have already become a new trend for urban underground space utilization. Due to the heavy traffic flow, the demands for rectangular cross-section underground tunnels, such as pedestrian underpass and road tunnel, are increasing gradually.The Rectangular pipe jacking machine (hereinafter referred to as RPJM) was firstly developed in Japan for the construction of metro station, pedestrian underpass, underwater tunnel by-passes, etc. Kazunaki Kawai et al. introduced a RPJM developed and manufactured by KOMATSU in 2002 [1]. Tosikazu Kubota et al. confirmed the rectangular tunnels’ superiority to circular tunnels with regard to larger inner cross-section and lower construction cost in their RPJM construction reports [2]. Compared to circular pipe jacking machines, a RPJM also has the merits of a higher inner tunnel space utilization ratio and is able to excavate in shallow overburden areas. As shown in Figure 1, the effective area of a rectangular tunnel is more than 20% higher than that of an equivalent circular tunnel."

This paper summarizes the results of an experimental program conducted to characterize the moment-rotation behavior of skewed flat radial joints from large diameter (45 ft) tunnel lining. Both positive and negative joint moment-rotation behaviors were measured experimentally using two-segment joint combination assemblies. The results are compared to closed form methodologies used by designers, e.g., the Janssen method. The differences in observed and model behavior are discussed within the context of design practice.

Queensland Pacific Metals (QPM) is developing its flagship Townsville Energy Chemicals Hub (TECH) facility to produce nickel and cobalt sulfates from imported high-grade nickel laterite ore for nickel-cobalt-aluminium and nickel-cobalt-manganese Li-ion batteries. The TECH facility is expected to use a patented leaching, recovery and recycling process called the DNi Process™. It uses the nitric acid leaching process for extracting nickel, cobalt and other valuable metals from laterite ore. Apart from the nickel and cobalt sulfates, the TECH Project will also produce high purity alumina, hematite (~640 ktpa) and other by-products. The hematite by-product precipitated from the DNi Process™ (hematite precipitate hereafter), is high in Fe and particularly low in impurities. QPM is working to identify potential applications for these high-purity by-products to generate additional revenue and to achieve its zero-waste ambition. As such, QPM has engaged CSIRO to evaluate various agglomeration options to produce low-cost, hematitic products suitable as ironmaking feed materials. This paper will first reveal the unique characteristics of the hematite precipitate arising from the TECH Project and then examine the sintering and pelletising processes for preparing the hematite precipitate as an ironmaking feed.

A CBMM aplicou aços microligados ao nióbio de alta resistência mecânica para a fabricação de containers de caminhões que transportam grãos na região do Triângulo Mineiro e Alto Paranaíba, com o objetivo de reduzir o peso desses equipamentos e possibilitar o aumento da carga útil transportada. O novo projeto reduziu em 10% o peso do container e também aumentou seu volume útil de 27 m3 para 29 m3. O investimento teve retorno com apenas 8 dias de operação com o novo projeto transportando arroz. Também foram obtidos ganhos no transporte de milho e soja com o retorno do investimento em 21 e 56 dias de trabalho respectivamente. O trabalho mostra os aços utilizados e as principais alterações nos projetos desses componentes.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar o uso de filtros de alta pressão no tratamento de polpas decorrentes do beneficiamento mineral, em especial rejeitos e concentrados de mineração. Foram analisados os problemas da atual prática de deposição de finos em barragens de rejeitos e baias de decantação e os novos desafios encontrados pelo setor em relação a escassez de água e eficiência energética. São elencados os diferenciais tecnológicos implementados nos filtros prensa Matec e analisados os benefícios na aplicação desta tecnologia, tais como maior recuperação de água, redução dos impactos ambientais e redução dos custos operacionais para manuseio e disposição dos rejeitos. Por fim são analisados os testes de filtragem realizados com rejeitos e concentrados de minério de ferro.

A técnica PIV foi empregada para avaliar a distribuição de velocidade longitudinal ao longo de uma ampla seção variando da válvula submersa até a face estreita de um molde de lingotamento de placas, bem como a distribuição de velocidade transversal correspondente. Estas informações podem ser utilizadas para avaliar o grau de turbulência interfacial.

The study proves that by introducing the iron powder and disintegrated steel scrap to low-sulphur cast iron still before the inoculation carried out with a conventional graphitising inoculant, the mechanical properties similar to those obtained during the inoculation treatment carried out on cast iron with the recommended high sulphur content are achieved. The said operation increases the number of crystallisation nuclei for dendrites of the primary austenite. In this case, the iron particles act as substrates for the nucleation of primary austenite, due to a similar crystallographic behaviour of the regular face centred cubic lattice The more numerous are the dendrites of primary austenite, the less free space is available in the interdendritic spaces for the formation of graphite eutectic grains, which makes the structure more refined (more eutectic grains) and the mechanical properties higher.

In this study, the recycling of waste materials is interesting in the environmental aspect to reduce the amount of waste in land fill and attenuate the pollution of groundwater, air and soil due to the liberation of dangerous elements. Recycling materials is an important issue once it represents a potential source of valuable metals. Waste printed wired boards (PWBs) as a principal part of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and it is a fast growing stream with complex composition. The composite materials from PWBs are ceramic, polymers and metals. Biohydrometallurgical route may offer possibilities to recycle PWBs from discarded computers with the order to recover copper. The extraction of copper from PWBs by bioleaching processeswas studied using a mixed culture of acidophilic bacteria fromacid mine drainage (AMD) and the bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans). The bioleaching experiments were performed in shaker flasks at temperature 30 °C and 170 rpmwith 10% (v/v) inoculum and pulp density of 35 g/L. Themetals concentration was determined by energy dispersiveX-ray Fluorescence (XRF). The results showed that the maximum copper recovery from PWBs using A. ferrooxidans was approximately 89% and with a mixed culture of bacteria from AMD the copper recovery was 92%.

Increased environmental regulations and pressures have created changing and new demands for tailings management strategies in a variety of mining applications. Critical among these items is the disposal of tailings as the pursuit of increased yields and lower costs have driven the application of different process technologies. With a number of technologies having a niche application focus, the belt filter press has been utilised for decades as a cost-effective and versatile option for dewatering different types of mineral tailings and other waste process streams. One of the critical advantages of the belt filter press is the technology’s ability to adapt and work in numerous plant designs, operating conditions and applications. As permitting and disposal options have become more stringent, plant designers, operators and equipment suppliers must develop comprehensive and site-specific economic, design and process evaluation techniques to ensure proper equipment selection and system design for belt filter presses or any other dewatering technologies. This paper will explore these techniques in relation to belt filter presses (with reference to other technologies) in a variety of different applications, along with other considerations to ensure a successful tailings dewatering system and disposal design. The mining industry is one of the three pillars of the Namibian economic development, besides tourism and the fishing industry. Generating 20 % of the GDP and more than 50 % of the export income, half of this amount derives from the diamond mining industry. In 2008, the annual production of 2.2 mio carat achieved an income higher than 1.44 billion Namibian Dollars (more than 750 mio Euro). After the global recession in early 2009, which also caused a significant downcrease in production to only 0.93 mio Carat, the diamond mining industry easily restored itself and the production figures for 2010 are expected to be even higher than those achieved in 2008. Compared to other diamond producing countries, Namibia is mainly producing diamonds of highest quality (jewellery quality), with less than 10 % of the mined diamonds not falling into this category. This high quality stands also for the worldwide highest prize achieved per carat. With 370 $US per carat it is more than four times higher than that of the average South African stone. In 1908 the finding of the first diamonds in the Namib desert close to the coastal town of Lüderitz was reported by a Mr Stauch, railway inspector for the then German colonial railway company. This event immediately triggered a Diamond Rush and subsequently the set-up of the restricted diamond mining area ?Sperrgebiet? through the German colonial administration. In 1913, only five years after the first mining operations had started, the steadily increasing production allowed for more than 20 % of the diamond production worldwide. After the First World War, the new South African government concentrated all mining activities in one organization, CDM (Consolidated Diamond Mines of South West Africa) which in following decades conducted an extensive and detailed exploration of the whole Sperrgebiet and started numerous new diamond mining operations.

This paper presents a new mining concept for oil sands called ?hydraulic underground mining of oil sands? or HUMOS. While this mining method is still at the conceptual stage it has great promise to allow extraction of bitumen from areas that are currently uneconomical or technically infeasible using surface mining or steam assisted gravity drainage. HUMOS is founded on a combination of recently proven technologies such as directional drilling, water jet cutting of oil sands, slurry transportation, cold water extraction of bitumen, and thickened tailings. One key component in the mining concept is the caving of oil sands and the creation of an underground cavern. Scaled-down physical models will be designed and built to demonstrate water jet cutting, cave development, and insitu primary bitumen separation. These will be used as a 'proof of concept'. On-going research will establish and prioritize issues that need to be resolved, outline key areas where further research is needed, foster establishment of research teams to divide and conquer the important questions, and create framework for future coordinated research efforts.

This study covers the investigations based on the electrokinetic and rheological properties to explain the interactions between kaolin minerals and commercially available polyelectrolyte in anionic character. Additional adsorption test were also conducted to support the interaction mechanism. Adsorption tests showed that adsorption densities decrease by increasing the solid content. In-creasing the solids contents from 1% to 30% by weight resulted in the decrease on adsorption from 2.14 mg/g to 1.85 mg/g. Because of its difficulty, the solids ratio at 70% was not studied. However, following to trend of the curve plotted adsorption density-solid ratio, an estimation was made and adsorption density at 70% solid content was extracted from the curve as 1.75~1.80 mg/g. The electrokinetic studies pointed out that the presence of polyelectrolyte increase the zeta potential of kaolin from 40 mV to 60 mV which is reasonable conditions to disperse and stabilize the kaolin slurry and lower the viscosity. When these result of the different tests are combined and considered together, 2 mg/g polyelectrolyte concentration was noted as optimal concentration where adsorption density, viscosity and zeta potential of the slurries give maxima and remain constant after this concentration.

La minería es una actividad importante para las regiones de Moquegua y Tacna. Sin embargo, el desconocimiento de su importancia económica -en tanto producción de rocas y minerales industriales tales como la sílice, calcáreos, arcilla común y rocas ornamentales, cuyas ocurrencias y canteras verificadas en estas regiones corresponden el 63% a minerales industriales, 20% a los áridos para la construcción y 16% a las rocas ornamentales- conlleva promover el conocimiento y uso de los minerales industriales. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el potencial geo-económico de las rocas y minerales industriales que existe y explota en estas regiones y así estimular su inversión en actividades mineras e industriales, relacionadas con el aprovechamiento de los recursos de rocas y minerales industriales (RMI), orientándose a disminuir las importaciones y aumentar las exportaciones capaces de generar divisas.

O estudo do efeito da adição de nióbio em um ferro fundido branco alto cromo tratado termicamente com 25%Cr e 3%C foi estudado neste trabalho por microscopia ótica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e difração de raios X. Partindo de uma liga hipereutética, a adição de 2% de nióbio foi definida considerando que todo Nb adicionado se encontraria na forma de carbonetos de nióbio, NbC, e com o objetivo de obter uma microestrutura próxima à eutética. A adição promoveu um refinamento da microestrutura, sendo que uma fração volumétrica de 27% de carbonetos M7C3 foi observada. Carbonetos grosseiros, inicialmente formados, não são facilmente observados. Uma microestrutura formada por NbC e eutético, M7C3 + matriz (austenita ou martensita), foi obtida. Os carbonetos de nióbio formados são encontrados principalmente na forma compacta. É esperado, portanto, que, a liga com adição de 2% de nióbio apresente melhor resistência ao desgaste abrasivo que a liga sem nióbio, em razão dos carbonetos primários, frágeis e grosseiros, terem sido praticamente suprimidos após a adição de Nb e uma microestrutura mais refinada tenha sido obtida.

The knowledge of the flow field inside a continuous casting mold is essential to improve operational efficiency of the process and also to achieve better inclusion control. Physical modeling, PIV technique and CFD have been employed to assess the velocity distribution in the metal- slag interface region in a slab mold. The analysis of results shows how higher casting velocity and lower immersion depth of submerged nozzle can lead to higher turbulence in the slag-metal interface. The effects of density difference between slag and metal and interfacial tension between the phases have been highlighted.
