Para atender a demanda do mercado de Siderurgia e Alumínio para a área de laminação a quente, a frio e linhas de processo, temos a necessidade de entender os conceitos existentes e desenvolver novas formas para aumentar a performance do equipamento, resultando em menores gastos com manutenção e um menor número de tempo parado da linha, culminando em lucro para a empresa. Será apresentado neste trabalho tecnologia em reengenharia e projeto de Mandris, aplicando know how adquirido dentro de vários anos de experiência e ainda contando com o apoio tecnológico de nossos colegas da Alemanha com soluções de excelente qualidade para o cliente. Estas soluções podem ser através de novos materiais, novos revestimentos e novos conceitos de trabalho do equipamento.

As part of its work for the improvement of safety conditions in mines , the Bureau of Mines has undertaken to establish a list of permissible storage - battery locomotives for use in gaseous mines , and , to this end , has issued Schedule 15 , "Procedure for Establishing a List of Permissible Storage -Battery Locomotives for Use in Gaseous Mines . " Up to the present time , two approvals * have been issued under this Schedule , and considerable testing work done on four other applications which have been made for approval . Prior to the publication of Schedule 15 , the Bureau conducted both field and laboratory investigations to determine the hazard from the batteries used in mine locomotives . ** These investigations indicated that the safety of the locomotive would depend largely on proper care of the battery , also on the use of a battery as mechanically rugged as possible . For this reason the Bureau staff , in testing locomotives submitted for approval , considered it advisable to subject the batteries to a jarring or bumping test to prove their adequacy as regards mechanical endurance and ruggedness . These tests on the batteries of the locomotives are described below.

Small-scale mining operations are characterised by a large variety of equipment availability and a high level of operational flexibility. Mine planning is usually scarce or absent in small quarries in Brazil, and mine management generally focuses on daily operations. As a result, analysis of the effects of unit operations, such as blasting, over the whole mining process is often neglected. The goal of the following project was to study the effect of production blasting on loading and hauling times, secondary breaking times and primary crushing times at the Experimental Mine of the Research Center for Responsible Mining of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The operations analysed included blasts that performed:under the average operational standard, defined in this paper as Case 1according to quarry standards, defined in this paper as Case 2.In order to establish the effects of blasting on the downstream process, three key performance indictors were used:The time taken to load the truck, when there is the need for material selection. Due to the fact that we do not have an operational baseline, the increase in time cannot be established, meaning that we must content ourselves with comparing the mean time in each scenario.The average time used for secondary breaking machinery.The time required for the primary crusher to fully process the load of a single truck. The results obtained indicate correlations between the coarseness of the blasted material and these operational times. The Geita Gold Mine is located 80 km southwest of the town of Mwanza in the north-west of Tanzania and is 100 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Limited. Open pit mining commenced at Geita in 2000. In 2011, the operation produced 494 000 oz at a cash cost of US$536/oz. This is a significant improvement from 2008, when 264 000 oz were produced at a cash cost of US$742/oz.A period of relatively poor operating performance at Geita was recorded over the period from 2006 to 2009. A period known at Geita as æthe turnaroundÆ commenced in 2009, and has been remarkable to say the least. Over the last couple of years the mine has embarked on a journey, which saw various interventions and initiatives. Among the key initiatives were Project ONE (which focuses on business process framework, systems for people and safety transformation), asset integrity, fatigue management and contract mining of satellite pits.Since the commencement of the turnaround at Geita, gold production has matched market guidance. The mine has returned to positive cash flow on the basis of strong performance on cash management, improved production and increased gold price.This paper explains some of the details of the mine operationsÆ improvements, how they were implemented, their relative contributions to improved mining performance and the path ahead to best practice. In the year 1992, T.A. Utigard published a paper titled "The measurement of the heat-transfer coefficient between high temperature liquids and solid surfaces." In that work, he instrumented an agglomerate of materials with thermocouples to infer the heat transfer coefficient of a high temperature liquid on a solid. The purpose of that research was to help in the design and operation of metallurgical reactors. Since that time there have been many researchers that have worked to characterize heat, mass, and momentum transfer phenomena in high temperature metallurgical processing operations. This paper presents results from the author’s experience with instrumenting thermocouples in copper elements coated with carbon to infer velocity of high temperature liquid metals. It also presents a methodology to determine velocity of a high temperature liquid by inferring the local heat transfer coefficient at a solid-liquid interface

No carregamento volumétrico de vagões, onde a variância de pesos carregados é relevante, ocorrem grandes limitações operacionais, que vão desde a percepção do volume em carregamento até a capacidade real de controle. Neste contexto, a diversidade de cenários é enorme: velocidades variadas (25% a 80% da capacidade), variação do minério, diferentes tipos de vagões, etc. Maximizar ou atingir o ponto ótimo com repetibilidade leva tempo e experiência. A solução considerou a aplicação intensa e avançada de instrumentação e recursos de automação, obtendo um resultado favorável de elevação da capacidade de controle sobre o peso em carregamento, nas diversas condições operacionais. A metodologia utilizada partiu de uma engenharia conceitual destacando o tratamento de riscos considerando as imprecisões e as técnicas avançadas de controle necessárias. Instrumentos e equipamentos também foram tratados dentro desses riscos, entre eles: balanças, radares 2D, identificação dos tipos de vagões, níveis dos silos, lasers para medições de precisão e para redundâncias, e ainda a simulação para testes do processo. Conclusão: 1. Maior capacidade de controle de peso carregado e menor variabilidade. 2. A imprevisibilidade na variação do material como desafio adicional para os automatismos. 3. Simuladores como diferencial na implantação da solução.

The principal objective of Geotechnical Engineers supporting operating mines is to provide safe working conditions and ensure that pit designs are geotechnically optimised to site conditions and pre-defined stability requirements. Pit slope designs are delivered in advance of pit excavations. Making changes to these designs is usually slow to enact and involves a layered sign-off before implementation, leading to unwanted delays in their adoption and subsequently increased production pressures. When unexpected ground conditions are encountered during the mining process, or short-term mining schedule requirements demand it, changes to these designs may not be easily feasible in certain situations. It is when these scenarios arise that Geotechnical Engineers need to be proactive and consider unconventional options to deliver safe operating conditions while satisfying short-term requirements to the mine schedule. Essentially, the geotechnical short-term strategic designs double-pronged approach supports the mine schedule while providing safe conditions and minimising geotechnical risks for people and equipment. Common short-term strategic geotechnical designs include; slope buttressing, over-steepening cut slopes to increase reserve recovery through unplanned or emergency cutbacks, and accepting risk threat and operating under unstable slopes. When implementing strategic design options, the Geotechnical Engineer must consider the broader implications for such designs. They must think of the plan’s long-term effects on the mine schedule and pit wall stability. Initiating aggressive designs to recover additional reserves to satisfy a short-term scheduling demand could result in-pit wall instability or suboptimal pit layout. Before and during the implementation phase, the Geotechnical Engineer must communicate and engage with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the plan is executed accordingly and geotechnical risks are effectively managed. Proactiveness to ground response and implementation of risk management strategies will improve safety performance and optimise mining schedules.

Shotcrete is a highly adaptable and widely used underground construction material at infrastructure and mining projects around the world. In fact, many projects could not have been completed without its utilization. As underground projects became larger the use of mechanized wet-mix spraying gradually replaced manual dry-mix shotcrete applications. This paper details some of the reasons for that and provides information on the equipment and operational factors including safety and productivity required to successfully complete underground shotcrete projects.

The recent shale gas revolution in the United States has led to the drilling of hundreds of unconventional shale gas wells in active and future coal reserves in traditional coal-mining regions of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. This paper summarizes the impact of a shale gas well breach on the mine ventilation system of an operating longwall panel. This study utilizes a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) to simulate a single-panel longwall operation. The LIAM will be utilized to identify flow pathways and distribution patterns of gas from breached gas well scenarios in an operating longwall in the Pittsburgh Coal Seam. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas is utilized to simulate a breached gas well. Preliminary findings suggest that the breached gas is diluted to regulatory levels and does not accumulate in the mine entries or in the longwall gob when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. Overall, this study characterizes the potential interaction between shale gas wells and the mine environment in the event of a gas well breach, which provides critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving safety, health, and welfare of miners.

A aglomeração a frio de minérios, rejeitos de mineração, resíduos sólidos, combustíveis, fertilizantes, produtos químicos, farelos de alimentação animal, etc. é um tema de grande relevância para o setor industrial dentro do contexto de crescimento sustentável. Neste trabalho é feita uma descrição da moderna planta piloto de aglomeração a frio de finos de minérios de ferro empregando o disco pelotizador SC-1000 (Haver). Essa unidade piloto pertence ao Centro de Sustentabilidade da UFMG, que está localizado na cidade de Pedro Leopoldo (Minas Gerais, Brasil). Esse tipo de equipamento difere dos discos tradicionais no mercado por agir de forma dinâmica na formação da pelota crua durante o processo de aglomeração a frio. A tecnologia Scarabeus permite o ajuste automático da altura da borda do disco, assim como da inclinação e da velocidade de rotação, mesmo durante a etapa de operação. É também feita uma abordagem sobre a inovadora tecnologia Scarabaeus de discos pelotizadores para plantas industriais de aglomeração de minérios. Ademais, são apresentadas as principais linhas de pesquisa referentes a aglomeração a frio de materiais finos.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar sistematicamente as etapas do processamento termomecânico de um aço SAE 1070 comercial. O aço foi trefilado a seco por 12 passes consecutivos com reduções médias entre 15% e 21%. A deformação verdadeira acumulada ao final do 12º passe foi de 2,52. Em seguida o material foi recozido a 1000ºC por 10, 20, 30, 60 e 120 min. A caracterização microestrutural foi realizada com o auxílio da técnica de microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e microscopia de força atômica. A rugosidade do material foi medida via microscopia confocal. O material teve ainda seu comportamento mecânico avaliado por meio de ensaio de dureza Vickers. Os fios de aço apresentaram a estrutura “curling” após o processo de trefilação. Essa estrutura foi substituída por uma estrutura perlítica refinada quando o material foi submetido ao recozimento. O ensaio de microdureza mostrou que, para restaurar as propriedades mecânicas do material, um recozimento entre 20 e 30 min seria suficiente. A análise da topografia revelou que o processo de trefilação altera consideravelmente a rugosidade do material.

To improve the flotation performance of chalcopyrite collector, 2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl xanthate (TBEX) and its derivative O-(2-(tert-butoxy)ethyl)-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (TBEETC) were designed and prepared by the introduction of a 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group into xanthate and thionocarbamate. TBEX and TBEETC were both prepared via the one-pot method with superior efficiency, which has significant commercial implications. The micro-flotation tests demonstrated that compared with sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) and O-isopropyl-N-ethyl-thionocarbamate (Z-200), TBEX and TBEETC both possessed better collecting ability and selectivity for chalcopyrite. DFT calculations and XPS were utilised to investigate the flotation mechanism involving TBEX or TBEETC and chalcopyrite. The results demonstrate that although 2-(tert-butoxy) ethyl group does not interact with minerals directly, its introduction reduces the energy of HOMO, so that they can better accept electrons instead of donating electrons which leads to better interaction with copper atoms rather than iron atoms. Titanium feedstocks are the building blocks of the titanium value chain. They can be mined directly, as is the case for ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile, or manufactured from ilmenite by extracting various quantities of non-TiO2 components from the ore by chemical and/or thermal processes.While feedstocks can be grouped into categories of materials with similar characteristics, they are essentially unique products from very different mining locations around the world. In fact, no two feedstocks are exactly the same. As such, the variations between the available feedstocks, in combination with the permutations in processing technologies to turn the feedstocks into titanium pigment or metal, mean that choices between feedstocks are specific to the location in which they are utilised.In this paper, the authors examine the key requirements of titanium feedstocks to the TiO2 pigment and metal sectors. Apart from the well known differences between feedstock choices for the sulfate and chloride process, the more opaque considerations in feedstock sourcing are examined.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site had a multi-decade career of supporting America’s defense system during World War II and the Cold War. A multi-reactor site, DOE Hanford produced plutonium for atomic weapons and steam for generating electricity. In addition, a network of nuclear facilities was built and used to support the research and development process, like 324 Building contained within the Hanford Site’s 300 Area. In 1989, after closing its doors to plutonium production, the DOE, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Washington State Department of Ecology took on a challenging, legally binding accord to clean up the Hanford Site. As part of the final clean-up project within the 300 Area, CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Company (CHPRC) contracted Apollo Mechanical Contractors who contracted Nicholson Construction Company (Nicholson) to design and construct an underpinning micropile system to support excavation efforts directly underneath the 324 Building “B-Cell” structure which in turn would facilitate the complete removal of the contaminated soils directly beneath the structure. The work was completed in complex and challenging conditions that required an airtight drilling system, two layers of protective clothing, a hood with a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR), the use of long reach tools, and continuous radiological monitoring. This paper will address the design, construction, and challenges encountered with underpinning a structure within a highly sensitive Category II nuclear environment.

The flotation of low-grade zinc oxide ore which from Guizhou has been researched by sulfuration- amine method. The experimental result indicated that when pH of pulp was 11, good flotation index can be achieved by using sodium silicate as dispersant, mixed amine as collector, and the do-sage of sulfur sodium was 6kg/t, and the recovery of zinc can be heightened by using copper sulfate as activator and Hydroxamicacid as collector. When the zinc feed grade was 4.84%, the zinc concentrates with grade of 39.23 % and recoveries of 75.17 % were obtained by adopting this technics.

The selection of the mode of transport for moving bulk materials is never a simple task as there are various concerns/considerations applied to the selection of the most practical and cost-effective mode of transport to be used to move bulk materials. This paper examines various alternatives for moving ore from a mine at the top of a mountain to a process plant below (some 5000 m apart and a vertical drop of 650 m). The terrain of the mountain section of the route has added its own specific requirements, resulting in the final selection of a pipe conveyor for this application. The paper further addresses the final selection of hardware used in the implementation of the solution.

The use of bricks of soil-cement is proving to be an important constructive methodology due to low environmental impact in the production process of these blocks comparing with conventional bricks are burnt, besides being easy to produce. However during the process of production of bricks, which are compressed, knowledge of the properties of the soil used is critical to the quality and durability of the blocks. The objective of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of using soil from the municipality of Goytacazes for the production of soil-cement bricks. Assays were performed the compaction, liquid limit, plastic limit, particle size analysis, EDX and X-Ray diffraction for later pressed blocks and analyze their compressive strength and water absorption.

En Newmont Yanacocha, la operación comprende tajos abiertos, pozas, pads de lixiviación, plantas de proceso y tratamiento de aguas acidas y de exceso. Un reto de sostenibilidad en Newmont Yanacocha es el control de la precipitación de metales preciosos en el proceso Merrill Crowe, por lo que fue necesario contar con una estrategia para cuando se tenga presencia de especies interferentes que pasiven el zinc en la precipitación, para ello se implementaron controles para mantener una eficiencia en el proceso y cumplir con los indicadores claves de desempeño.

The Athabasca oil sands mineable resource is located in northeastern Alberta, Canada. In oil sands mining, the ore zone is regulated to have a minimum mining thickness of 3 m and a cutoff grade of 7 wt.%. The current algorithm that is widely used to flag ore zones and waste zones tends to overestimate oil reserves and causes low-grade ore to be processed. This paper presents the development of a more complex algorithm that is more representative of the actual oil found during operations and that can prevent low-grade ore from being sent for processing.

A7075 aluminum alloys have high strengths but poor corrosion resistance. In order to improve the corrosion resistance, a clad sheet is suggested, that is the A7075 alloy sheet bonded to A1XXX or A6XXX aluminum alloy sheets which are surface layers with good corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties of the clad sheets are determined by the combination of the component layer sheets, and thermomechanical treatment should be precisely designed when the strengthening methods of the core and the surface alloys are quite different. In the present study, three-layered A6022/A7075/A6022 clad sheets were fabricated by roll bonding process. Simplified processes incorporating a twin roll casting were also suggested in order to reduce the processing cost. Several temper methods composed of rolling, annealing, solution treatment, and aging were suggested in order to optimize the mechanical properties of the sheets. The strengths of the clad sheets were compared with the bare A7075 and bare A6022 sheets.
