La mina Toquepala, propiedad de Southern Perú, es un yacimiento de cobre que desarrolla fases de minado de expansión y profundidad, en cuyas paredes finales se reflejan la competencia de los taludes, con el objetivo de soportar la carga portante de la masa rocosa. Sin embargo, los problemas de inestabilidad, tienen su origen en diversos aspectos, como geológicos, redistribución de esfuerzos, y diseño. Asimismo, las voladuras no controladas, alteran en forma progresiva y sistemática los parámetros geomecánicos del macizo rocoso. Por ello, el presente trabajo describe la perforación y voladura controladas de pre-corte como un método que brinda los beneficios de seguridad, control de vibraciones, incrementos de las reservas minerales por fase y disminución de la relación desbroce - mineral.

A dessulfuração do gusa líquido tem papel fundamental na obtenção de baixos teores de enxofre no aço, considerando que o processo de refino primário envolve utilização de oxigênio, prejudicando a dessulfuração nesta etapa. A busca de processos cada vez mais eficientes levou ao desenvolvimento da dessulfuração do gusa com a utilização simultânea de agente dessulfurante à base de carbureto de cálcio junto com o magnésio metálico em co-injeção ou multi-injeção. Este trabalho tem objetivo de mostrar os resultados desta aplicação em panelas de gusa líquido na ThyssenKrup CSA Siderúrgica do Atlântico, Rio de Janeiro, onde foi possível determinar ganhos de produtividade e custo.

In this thesis, a new process of recovering zinc sulfide ores was developed. The novel synthetic coordination leaching process mainly included two steps: microwave assisted phase reconstruction and compound coordination leaching. By applying various techniques, such as chemical composition analysis, X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy, it could be concluded that sulfide phases would directly oxidized to zinc oxides under the 500 ºC microwave roasting and adding 30% Na2O2. What’s more, zinc leaching rate reached to 61.16% within 2 hours. Compared to the current technologies, this procedure had the advantage of avoiding SO2 emission, high leaching efficiency, simple process, manipulate easily, and low cost, which could be expected tremendous application potentials.

To reduce coke consumption in blast furnace ironmaking, this study proposed a new method of applying iron-coke briquette prepared using hematite powder and pulverized coal to protect coke in BF iron making. Results showed that, with a ratio of hematite to coal of 2.0, the iron-coke briquette could obtain a satisfying compressive strength of more than 1500 N both before gasification and after being gasified by CO2 for 1 h. The activation energy of the iron-coke briquette was 93–135 kJ/mol, which is lower than the coke and therefore could protect the coke in BF. The agglomeration and stratification of iron particles occur in the course of iron-coke briquette gasi fication and is bene ficial to the improvement of the iron-coke briquette strength.

Expanding rock bolts anchor within a rock mass more efficiently than non-expanding varieties. This is of great importance in weak ground conditions, where grouted friction bolts perform less efficiently than in good ground conditions. Filling a Split Set with demolition concrete has been shown to double the load-carrying capacity when compared to conventional use of Split Sets. This report details verification of these results by installing and pull-testing 14 Split Sets of varying grout conditions within in a fault zone. These Expanding Split Sets achieved loads double and triple that of ungrouted and normally grouted conventional Split Sets. A literature review and chemical analysis were conducted to understand the expansion process better. It was found that 20 per cent more calcium is included in expanding cement, which is responsible for its growth. Factors most affecting the expansion process were identified. Furthermore, the expansion rate of a bolt outside a borehole was measured and 6 mm of expansion across its diameter was found. The compressive properties of the cement were compared with other types, due to expanding cement becoming uncohesive after the expansion process is complete. When confined within a Split Set, compression testing demonstrated that this grout is just as strong and rigid as normal grout. Finally, the bolts were tested by shear and it was found that the Expanding Split Set (ESS) has a similar shear capacity to grouted Split Sets, which is 70 per cent higher than that of ungrouted Split Sets. These results enabled the mechanism for improved performance in weak ground conditions to be verified. Expanding grout will expand the Split Set into its borehole of varying diameter and lock it into place, creating increased friction and resistance to pull-out. The mining sector, a notably energy-intensive industry worldwide, is a major consumer of fossil fuels, leading to significant carbon emissions globally. The move towards electrification, coupled with advancements in battery technology, has redirected focus from traditional diesel-powered solutions to battery-powered alternatives. This paper introduces a novel mining haulage system, termed the Battery Trolley system, and examines its theoretical foundations, configurations, and operational processes. It offers a comprehensive analysis of the system’s characteristics and limitations. Through a hypothetical road simulation, the study analyses various battery mining trucks, calculating energy consumption based on force parameters and tailoring battery sizes to contemporary materials and technology. When assessing various battery truck alternatives—considering aspects such as battery size, effective payload, duty cycle, energy efficiency, productivity, and single-shift production—a range of performance outcomes and characters become apparent within the mining context. The findings indicate that Battery Trolley configurations, requiring smaller battery capacities, entail lesser compromises on effective payload. Consequently, these configurations achieve a higher duty cycle, reduced energy consumption per tonne, heightened productivity, and enhanced singleshift production capabilities compared to Battery-only alternatives. The comparative analysis of Battery Trolley with stationary charging (BT-S) and Battery Trolley – dynamic charging (BT-D) underlines that battery Trolley systems are capable of overcoming the challenges associated with battery size, thus successfully fulfilling the production demands of large truck applications in mining. This positions Battery Trolley systems as a more advantageous option for the decarbonisation of mining fleets, underscoring their potential in contributing to the sector’s sustainable evolution.

A descoberta das grandes reservas de petróleo e gás ao longo da costa sudeste do Brasil representou um novo desafio tecnológico na história da indústria brasileira de petróleo. Entre as principais dificuldades pode-se citar: água ultra profunda, espesso leito de sal, alta pressão, baixa temperatura, ambiente muito corrosivo contendo contaminantes como o gás carbônico (CO2) e o sulfeto de hidrogênio (H2S). O objetivo deste trabalho é o estudo do comportamento eletroquímico de um aço inoxidável supermartensítico contendo cerca de 14% de cromo (Cr), em meio contendo 115.000 ppm de íons cloreto, 10 ppb de oxigênio dissolvido, com adição de 10-2 mol/L e 10-3 mol/L de tiossulfato de sódio. Para tal foram empregadas as técnicas de polarização anódica potenciodinâmica cíclica e microscopia ótica. Os resultados experimentais mostraram que ocorreu uma variação significativa na extensão da região de passivação quando tiossulfato de sódio foi adicionado ao meio, aumentando a susceptibilidade à corrosão por pites do material.

The paper presents the results obtained by the AC EAF supplied by Danieli at Kroman Çelik (Gebze-Turkey) after the planned upgrade to 150 ton. The EAF – 7,4 m diameter, based on the full platform standard design - is able to handle a maximum power of 114 MW and is equipped with the most advanced and reliable technology, including module injection system and the Hireg electrodes regulation system. Excellent results were already obtained with 120 heat size in terms of fast start-up and excellent performance figures. After the upgrade, productivity was increased up to 212 t/h, maintaining high process efficiency (365 kWh/t with 32,1 Nm3/t O2).

Dois aços de grão não orientado com 2,45 e 3,3 %Si com 7 amostras para cada liga, foram estudados para compreensão do efeito do teor de silício nas perdas histeréticas. As amostras foram recozidas com diferentes temperaturas de recozimento final, resultando em diferentes tamanhos de grão. As perdas histeréticas e B50 foram medidos. Os resultados de B50 mostraram que não houve variação de textura entre as ligas com diferentes %Si. Por fim, os resultados não mostraram variações da energia dissipada pela perda histerética com adição de %Si.

A thyssenkrupp CSA (TKCSA), Rio de Janeiro, possui dois Altos-Fornos. Ambos iniciaram operação em 2010, Alto-Forno 01 em 13/07/2010 e Alto-Forno 02 em 06/12/2010. Em Dezembro de 2014, foram verificados problemas de deslocamento dos staves de ferro fundido e deformação dos staves de cobre. Analisando estes eventos foi identificado quebra dos parafusos de fixação dos staves de ferro fundido na carcaça. O trabalho apresenta histórico destes acontecimentos, as intervenções realizadas como meio de preservar a integridade e prolongar a vida útil dos Altos-Fornos e os resultados obtidos após retirada de água do interior do mesmo.

The oxygen uncoupling property of the oxygen carrier is essential for the chemical looping gasification process. In this paper,the combined Cu-based oxygen carrier were prepared by mechanical mixing method. XRD and SEM were used to characterize the oxygen carrier prepared. TG experiments were performed in a thermal analyzer to investigate the oxygen uncoupling property. The XRD pattern of the fresh oxygen carriers showed that the phases of the oxygen carriers were stable.The active phase of oxygen carrier was CuMnO. With the increasing of x 3-x 4 heating rate, the starting and ending temperatures of the reduction reaction increased. However, the reaction time decreased and the reduction rate increased. With the increasing of oxygen concentration, the starting temperatures of the reduction reaction shifted to high level. Temperature had great effect on the reduction rate and the reduction rate increased with increasing of the reduction temperatures.

In the past three years, the company has been involved in six 8? coring projects in a variety of geographies and geologies, including iron ore, coal and uranium. FORACO has developed proprietary equipment and techniques to deliver cost-effective LDC samples with outstanding core recovery.The FORACO LDC sampling system is hands free, with mechanised rod and corebarrel handing to minimise the risk of manual handling injuries. Sample volumes are six times PQ (the common industry standard for large core samples), with core recoveries consistently above 96 per cent in extremely difficult formations.Eight inch coring is a conventional coring system suited to hole depths up to 150 m. "Mining has been a staple to technological advancement ever since the dawn of time. By harnessing the different physical and chemical properties that each mining commodity brings to the table, more and more innovation is developed and manufactured. As these non-renewable resources continue to be extracted, the industry as a whole faces a challenge in finding the next economical deposit as well as declining grade at the current operations. By means of pre-concentration, ore sorting aims to separate the barren material from the valuable ore to reduce energy consumption and tailings generation, while increasing the feed grade, concentrate grade, mill recovery, and revenue. In addition, ore sorting allows the modification of deposit geometallurgy in order to allow the creation of an optimal mill feed. This paper evaluates the applicability and challenges of ore sorting by utilizing the results from four different mines, and reviews them in detail. The mines include one underground and three open pit mines that are precious metal operations. In order to understand the applicability of ore sorting in these operations, initial rock-by-rock test results and different types of assays (atomic adsorption [AA], inductively coupled plasma [ICP], and fire assay) are utilized. Using the assay results, the grade recovery curves for ore sorting are generated and they are further improved by using and developing an ore sorting algorithm, which is discussed in this paper. The application and evaluation of ore sorting in greenfield and brownfield properties will also be discussed. The state of the art ore sorting technologies for both rock-by-rock and bulk sorting are also reviewed in this paper. The future technologies on the horizon, including different combinations of sensors, are explained. The sorting technologies include X-ray transmission (XRT), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), colour, infrared, electromagnetic, and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)."

The US17 Spring/Fishburne Drainage Improvements Project utilizes a stormwater conveyance tunnel system of approximately 8,250 LF. The tunnel system includes two intersecting tunnels of differing diameter at a 40-degree angle. The intersection was constructed in soft-ground conditions. This paper discusses the design, geotechnical concerns, initial ground support, and final lining construction. The tunnels utilized two soft-ground TBMs excavated at 15 ft and 11 ft with ribs & lagging initial support. The final lining consisted of unreinforced and reinforced cast-in-place concrete with polymer fibers. Concrete final lining was successfully completed in March 2020.

The energy consumption of Iron-making, especially Blast Furnace (BF), is very large. In order to maximize the utilization of limited resource, it is essential to reduce energy consumption and recovering waste energy in BF. This paper introduces energy saving equipment based on NSENGI’s over 80 BF construction experiences since 1963. The first is the technology for the Top Charging System for low fuel-rate operation. One of the important factors to achieve such operation, the burden should be charged uniformly. Since 1974, NSENGI have developed and delivered over 80 Top Charging equipments for such purpose and nowadays, developed new type Top Charging equipment with improvement of charging precision. The second is the technology for Solely BFG Operation in Hot Stove, which means no use of other fuel gas such as LDG, COG. It is realized by high combustibility of NSENGI’s Top-Combustion Hot Stove with Metallic Burners, and large amount of heat recovery of Waste gas Heat Recovery system with heat medium. The third is the technology for effective energy recovery in TRT. With NSENGI’s latest Gas Cleaning System “Multi-Vessel Electrostatic Precipitator" (MVEP), TRT will be able to generate higher electrical energy by approx. 30% than that of wet-type. In comparison with dry bag-type, MVEP allows temperature fluctuation which lead to generate higher electrical energy by approx. 10% NSENGI therefore, will be able to accept and meet your request widely.

"Underground mine rib stability is an ongoing safety issue in all mining applications. Rib-related accidents present at least as many problems as roof-related ground control. Underground coal mine rib safety is continually emphasized as a primary safety concern at every mining operation. The application of rib support materials is increasing as more difficult mining conditions are experienced due to deeper cover, more variable depositional environments, thicker seam heights, and multi-seam mining effects. As the coal seams become thicker, the need for rib control increases. A variety of rib control methodologies has been documented and research continues on mine design methods and support techniques to reduce or eliminate rib-related accidents.This paper presents an alternative rib bolting technology using proven conventional rib support systems that allows mine personnel to more efficiently install rib support during development operations. This alternative rib bolting method allows for additional rib support with a single support installation.INTRODUCTIONRib control continues to garner the watchful eye of both concerned operators and government officials due to many factors: inherent safety within entries and crosscuts, actual rib stability history, safety improvement, cost control, improved mining methods, and maintaining production goals. As demonstrated through many years of actual practice, desired outcomes can be achieved by scrutiny, innovation, and combining improved practice methodologies.Rib surface control continues to be a necessary part of the production process. However, production and safety issues persist at the point of installation using current control apparatuses and methods to install rib controls. Among others, current issues of rib control are quantity of bolts required, overall time required for installation, ease of apparatus installation, flexibility of the system for appendage installation and operator exposure. A need exists to decrease the time miners spend installing rib control apparatuses, while increasing the safety of such installation processes. At present, installing rib control devices (primary rib bolts, plates, mesh, and, in most cases, secondary rib bolts and plates) is performed in a very congested area and is time-consuming process at the primary coal-winning area: the face. The MatLok system addresses these problems."

Em virtude da necessidade de produção de aços cada vez mais restritivos com relação às faixas de composição química, torna-se necessário o desenvolvimento contínuo de novas ferramentas para o controle do processo de fabricação do aço via aciaria à oxigênio. Neste cenário, propôs-se o desenvolvimento de um modelo de controle dinâmico para os Convertedores LD da Aciaria 1 da Usiminas - Usina de Ipatinga, utilizando o resultado da análise dos gases de exaustão, em conjunto com ferramentas matemáticas de ajuste e análise de dados. Neste trabalho é apresentado o modelo de previsão de carbono construído a partir das curvas das análises dos gases, das quais foram obtidos matematicamente os pontos de interesse: análises instantâneas, a interseção das curvas do CO e do CO2 e o ponto máximo da curva do CO2. O modelo foi desenvolvido utilizando redes neurais e validado utilizando dados históricos do processo.

Advances in technology now allow geotechnical practitioners to better describe the properties and variability of a rock mass through advances in surface and underground mapping, borehole technology and geophysical imaging. Yet the way in which practitioners use this data is not being realised to its full potential and the quality and quantity of data that is collected is often superior to the conventional design approaches that are typically adopted. A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach provides the ideal basis for using this data to generate geologically-realistic rock mass models based on parameters derived from field data, which more effectively capture the variability and rock mass behaviour. However, until recently, the DFN approach has mainly been applied to cave mining and small-scale models associated with synthetic rock mass modelling or groundwater flow modelling for the nuclear waste and oil and gas industries.Ground support design for blocky rock masses in Australia is often dealt with in a rather traditional manner, adopting either an observational empirical approach through rock mass classification systems or conventional wedge stability analysis techniques. Using these methods requires several generalised assumptions about the rock mass fabric and excavation geometry. As such, the support system is often designed for a worst-case scenario based on a predetermined risk tolerance that the mine is willing to accept and a design block size that is generally determined by the proposed excavation dimension.A study by Doumis (2014) used conventional wedge stability analysis and the probabilistic key block analysis software JBlock (Esterhuizen, 1996) to estimate potential block sizes and support requirements. A DFN approach has also been adopted at Callie underground mine using FracMan™ software (Golder Associates, 2014).
